Spanish Ass'assin, Captain of the Grand Prix Madonnas gave me some insight on this bout:
Detroit Area Dork: Did your team's last performance (even though it was a win) change your team's methods at practice?
Spanish Ass'assin: Our practices did change a little in the fact that we saw some things that needed work after trying them in the first bout. We have fast, agile jammers on our team but all jammers still need help getting through the pack at some point, no matter how good they are. We started working on really offering more offense whenever possible and not forgetting about our jammer while trying to stop the other jammer. It's a tough thing to do out there when things get crazy, but it's important.
Detroit Area Dork: What Dames' assets have you been preparing for in anticipation of this bout?
Spanish Ass'assin: The Dames have some power jammers that we needed to prepare for. Not all jammers are just fast and little, although they have those too. Sometimes the most deadly jammers are the ones that can deliver a hit while jamming and make their own holes. Our defense had to get ready to deal with jammers and blockers pushing their way through walls so we practiced staying together and not letting hits throw us off our game. The Dames have a lot of new hungry girls on their team that are just waiting to lay a hit down on someone. I have a feeling this bout is going to be extremely active in the pack and derby girls are going to be flying into suicide seating a little more.
Detroit Area Dork: Now that you've been able to see every teams' rookies in action, would you say that watching the rookies in their early trials gives you an accurate prediction of how they'll perform in a bout
Spanish Ass'assin: The one thing that I've learned is that bout day and a large crowd brings out the derby in a derby girl. It's amazing what jerseys, 1,000 people staring at you and an official whistle can turn on in your brain. I think some derby girls are "bout skaters" and some derby girls play the same all the time. I know the difference because I am a bout skater. Bout Day changes how you think, how you act and how hard you hit. You no longer have friends out there, you have opponents that you cannot afford to go easy on or give a second chance to. So for some of the rookies, yes, I think I had them figured out just by watching them practice and learn preseason. But for some other rookies...well, bout day sure does look good on them.
