| FOTOMUSEUM DETROIT presents PHOTOGRAPHY UNTIL NOW: The Painter's Eye Opening Reception: June 22nd, Friday from 6-10pm "Some people are amazed that their artist heroes have cheated [with a camera]." – Chuck Close "The use of a camera diminishes no great artist." – David Hockney As early as the 1400's, artists used a form of camera in the creation of their paintings. This exhibition looks at those artists who have used the camera, not merely as a tool, but as a medium - as an alternate expression of their artistic eye. In the last two centuries, the use of a camera by painters has asserted modernity into their work and generated a revolutionary violence into all of art, revealing itself most fully in the 20th Century. The camera lens allowed artists to view their world in a more contemporary manner than had previously been depicted or even imagined. The camera prompted each to engage in a fresh and dynamic viewing of the world. One that penetrated the surface of life and touched the previously invisible moment. Including: Ingres, Courbet, Seurat, Picasso, Duchamp, Monet, Cezanne, Hopper, Manet, Lautrec, Bonnard, van Gogh, Gauguin, Schiele, Ryder, Oppenheim, Corot, Dali, Munch, and Klee.

| The Little Museums That Can... In a young century dogged by instability and uncertainty, faith in the power of art is rekindled by the opening of Fotomuseum Detroit (FMDetroit). The need for a contemporary photography space in Detroit remains especially strong in view that the entrenched artistic circles continue to neglect such a truly active medium. The Fotomuseum is the third of three sister-spaces housed under one roof and devoted to a more complete appreciation of contemporary art, alongside: the Museum of New Art (MONA) and the Detroit Institute of Video Arts (DIVA).
