Dirty Projectors,

Having only been recently introduced to the eccentric
styling of the Dirty Projectors, I was at first caught off guard by this band,
just two years ago. At first listen, I found the sound disturbing yet
compelling, fits and spurts of varied timing and indulgent harmony, resulting
in a provocative revelation of a story unfolding. Showcasing their latest album,
Swing Lo Magellan, singer David Longstreth delivers consistency in his
emotionally inspired, often vague lyrical content, allowing the listener to
draw some conclusions of their own.
Mixing fan favorites from previous release Bitte Orca, such
as Cannibal Resource, No Intention and the encore show stopper Stillness is the
Move, alongside new tracks, yet notably omitting ever popular Temecula Sunrise
from the set list.
The performance was executed seamlessly between dance pop
and suspense filled ambience, engaging the entire audience for the duration of
the show, a rare treat for someone like myself, who can easily lose interest
mid way through a set, given to unfamiliar works.
With a sound system to rival any other, this was an
excellent venue for this artful arrangement of intricate vocal harmonies,
guitar interplay accompanied by synthetic and organic beats. As an on looker of
excited fans at the end of the performance, Longstreth found time to immerse
himself with the crowd immediately following his time on stage, allowing his
fans to take pictures and answer questions.
It was then his turn, to be caught
off guard, when I suggested he remove his shirt for a photo op, he only replied
with a raised eyebrow, to which I could only laugh at my own joke.
