Carradine

"Carradine was raised in the wild by slack rock wolves Lou Barlow, Lee Ranaldo and Mac Mcaughn.
The milk has dried around their lips and they are ready to leave the forrest.  Bring ear plugs."

"The unpredictable garage-electro collision is one beautiful (and bizarre) mess"
-Brett Callwood, Detroit Metromix

- DJ's Les Threat Dudette (between sets)

"Les Threat Dudette are DJ's Lauren Hood, Christina Lenore-Birdis Andersson and Nicole Kosiba they are hipper than you, own more records than you and collectively know more about Siouxsie and the Banshees than any human should.  Be afraid."

regardless of their origin, these songs were selected from the catalogue for their ability to be randomly linked and sequenced and tell the story that is remote locations."

Karaoke Night @ The Inn Place

A fat old man named Red greeted my girl and I at the bar
as we cringed through a drunken, slurred Bjork song (www.dailymotion.com/video/x1jcto_bjork-its-oh-so-quiet_music).
The vodka tonics from the bar were a tad on the weak side, but it matched the talent if you're picking up what I'm putting down. The bartender's nightly rendition of Janis Joplin's “Piece of My Heart” was possibly the pinnacle of the evening, met with screams and hollers from her intoxicated patrons. After 1 the mood became overly sentimental with a chain of whiny, slow country songs, so we moved on to bigger
and better things: my bedroom...

FRIDAY
April 17 2009
Dinner with Rick & Sue Vian

To celebrate his recent successful opening at my place of employment, the Robert Kidd Gallery (robertkiddgallery.com) in Birmingham, Rick Vian (rickvian.com) and his wife Sue invited myself and a few guests to a dinner at their house located just outside of downtown Royal Oak. The food was wonderful, a diverse mix of flavors from all over Europe.
The best part was a banana and pineapple cake
which I still have a piece of in my refrigerator.

Their house exterior is painted an strange rusty purple color which is neither warm nor cool. It was inspired, like his paintings, by the Michigan UP. The yard was decorated with smooth basalt stones plucked from lake superior, wind chimes that were rigged to be silent, and elegant metal sculptures that would probably be lethal if you fell on them.
The interior of the house was beautifully decorated with pieces from several Cass Corridor artists, obtained over the years through art trades with friends and colleagues. The bedroom was the most outlandishly decorated room in the house. The walls and blinds were completely covered with green paint strokes and resembled a canopy of tree leaves, tapering around the ceiling to reveal a pale blue sky.
Rick said he did it while his wife Sue was away for a week.

I left Rick and Sue's house around 11 and planned to catch the end of the Art Battle and maybe ask how badly my boys in the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre did at the Detroit Music Awards. Ha.
On the way home I listened to a sarcastic voicemail
from Johnny Retro of JCM,
“Hey dude, we're hanging out in front because we're fucking winners,
we'll be down at the Fillmore for a minute...”
The message was left before the start of the event, eluding to the fact that JCM was hopelessly up for Outstanding Electronic Dance Band against Deastro, Love Meets Lust, and Matthew Dear.
During a brief rendezvous at my house to meet up with two girls, I received a phone call.
No shit- the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre won.

The rest of the night was mostly a bust, zig-zagging from bar to bar in Hamtramck and then arriving at the Russell just in time to see the aftermath of the wreckage that was the Art Battle.
I asked who won the DAB09
“Some kids from Grand Rapids, I don't know them”
was the best answer I could get.

SATURDAY
April 18 2009
Comet Burger, Gusoline Alley, & Woody's

After hearing about the phenomenally unlikely selection of the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre for a DMA, I made plans to hang out with them and get the low down on just what the hell happened.
We met at Comet Burger in Royal Oak for some soggy burgers and devilish waffle fries before hitting some bars. What followed was a hazy recollection of meeting with the Amboy Dukes (possibly) in a maze of corridors and rooms that is the Fillmore backstage. A dim room lined with sofas, a grey haired man sunk into a corner with a grey haired lady giving him a semi-nude lap dance.
Vomiting on the floor next to the table,
then stumbling to the bathroom and sleeping
in a stall before closing out a $100 bar tab.
Finally, their accidental theft of a backpack
filled with unidentified pills and paper work.
“You don't have any time to sort out the duds” was the rational behind sampling a handful...
After leaving the hit-or-miss Gusoline alley (too many guys in cargo shorts, not enough seating)
a text message was received from the other half of JCM who was
spending his night in a strip club with his 15 pound DMA,
trying to convince strippers he was someone important: an award winning musician.
I don't think it went well after he sent another incoherent message
about trying to convince a stripper to swallow a length of rope.

Woody's was an abomination of tiny women in jerseys, dude-bro's (://dudebro.urbanup.com/1566366), and overly dressed dancers who started moving to the beat on the walk in.
A few laughs, a few High Life's and we were out of there.

Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3
Goodnight Oslo
myspace.com/robynhitchcock

If Lou Reed and those two brothers in Oasis who fight onstage had a 40 year old child who became the vocalist for the Smiths, his band would be Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3.
Sarcastic, rainy day pop music with a British invasion flare. Other tracks have a similarity to the Kinks and MGMT, but with the same pop sensibility as the Beatles.
Goodnight Oslo is overflowing with pop hooks, tried and true verse-chorus-verse formulaic tracks that hit the mark. Competent songwriting is matched by the sparkly clean production. It harks back to the production value of the Elephant Six Collective of the nineties with their penchant for horns, sterilized acoustic guitars, and pop arrangements.

Spiral Beach
Ball
spiralbeach.com

Spiral Beach is a young band of hooligans hailing from Toronto. Primarily fronted by a female vocalist (named Maddy Wilde!) on keys/synth supported by four unshowered boys who sing in unison. They have an overall sound similar to Joydrop or Garbage from the 1990's with the dance beats of the Black Kids. They show a surprising sophistication in terms of their tones and arrangements with floating vocal melodies that intertwine over reverberating guitars.
The overall production value of the album is fantastically professional and finished, the album artwork is clearly produced by an art studio and the cleanliness of the sound could only be the work of a seasoned vet. These kids clearly have it going on.
Their website shows an impressive “Showography” (I had never heard of this term either) of tours which demonstrate that they have somehow criss-crossed the planet while making the time to write and record a very polished and mature album.

John Doe and the Sadies
Country Club
myspace.com/johndoeandthesadies

This is a country/blue grass album from LA. LA holds the Guiness World Record for shortest abbreviated word (originally titled El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula by Felipe de Neve, which translates to The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porziuncola). With that out of the way, Country Club is anything you could hope for in a country album: imagine trains, your momma bailing you out of jail, your dog running away, coffee & cigarettes, rainy days, getting drunk on whiskey and arrested after hitting a parked car, and the current war against Saddam or the Muslims or whoever we're supposed to hate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_of_Nightmares).
I am not a country music aficionado, but according to the band's myspace, Country Club consists of “classic country covers” as well as original material. A song titled Detroit City hit a sentimental note with me, it is a mopey ballad about going home to Detroit.
The album is laced with country hooks, fiddles, and steel guitar, as any good country album should be. It is a country album that goes back to the golden mid century, an authentic and uncommercial country sound that is refreshing after spending 3 years working in a metal shop where 99.5 FM was the standard.

Save Motorcityrocks.com Tonight!!!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

There is going to be an awesometastic Motor City Rocks Benefit Concert happening FEBRUARY 25th at the Lager House. The cost is only $5, feel free to donate more. If you can’t make it and still want to donate consider donating at our kickstarter.

We’re hoping to raise enough money so we can get some portable lights so we can record interviews that don’t come out in accidental sepia tone!

Marco Polio & The New Vaccines – Traversing the dimensional vortex through the use of imbrellas, Marco Polio makes Picasso look dull and limes taste sweet. Recently described as creating a “happening” (780’s), if you haven’t seen this band, you’re life might be meaningless.

The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre – Psychedelic garage rock with punk undertones and theatrics rivaling Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The most hated and, somehow, also at the same time, the most loved band in Detroit. Winner of “Outstanding Electronic Artist” at Detroit Music Awards (2009) and recently described as “devoid of any miniscule crumb of fashion sense” (Computer Perfection). If you haven’t seen this band, you may have an undiagnosed personality disorder.

Sheefy McFly – Only one man has the ability to bridge the gap between rock and hip hop, to heal a city tearing itself apart, to make everything he touches get in the groove. Sheefy has been recently described as “one of the dopest artist/producer/emcee to ever walk the Earth ….at least I think so lol” (Sheefy McFly). If you haven’t seen him, you’re not cool

The Thornbills – The sweet catchy acoustic melodies of The Thornbills will melt your heart. They’ve been recently described as “a magical blend of Appalachian folk with a knack for intelligent and truthful songwriting” (Steve Barman). If you haven’t seen this band, here is your chance! Rule of indie rock: if you see them first you are the best!

Well We have the infamous Hamtramck Blowout this week. Im going to get away from the everything is sunny revues as of late and get into the nitty gritty of who I would see and not see in the upcoming 3 days. And away we go....

Thurs:
I will be arriving at the Whiskey In The Jar at roughly 9:45. The interim between when I get there and when we play will be spent constructing the set and coreographing the dancers. Afterwards, I will leave Metro behind for teardown and head to G of C Lounge to catch Darling Imperial or to The Painted Lady to catch Black Irish. Black Irish is the new consternation from Elliot who was the frontman/lead guitarist for The Universal Temple of Divine Power and the lead guitarist for The Kingsnakes. I have not had a chance to see them yet but if it is anything similar to his previous projects, it will be some great southern-esque rock. Darling Imperial is a band I have played with and seen several times. They are a solid blues based rock band with catchy songs.

Bands I will be sure to miss (on Thursday):

--The Grande Nationals-The frontman is obsessed with taking his shirt off (after talking about it for 3/4 of the set) and fixated upon showing off his new pumas...

--Selfsays-They recently opened for us at The Majestic Cafe. They are probably the worst rap outfit I have ever seen. They were unable to keep their rhymes on beat with the dj. It is all schtick with no follow through.

Bands I would catch (Thurs 3-4) if I weren't performing:

--Carradine-90s era pop rock. They are very reminiscent of Jesus Jones to me. I'm sure they don't feel that way. Anyways, they've put on a sold show the few times I've seen them.

--Carjack-1 man electro clash dance rave. Where else can you see Milo going nuts, running in place? Where else will you almost get hit with a flying robot?

--Decibilt-The heaviest metal you will find at Blowout. I caught these guys at the Magic Stick's Haiti Benefit. At first they were very off-putting due to the different genre they were emphasizing. After awhile they provided me a venue to display my Wild At Heart Nick Cage dance.

Fri:
I will be performing at the Belmont as a Font with Elle & The Fonts at 9:20pm. Adam from the JCM will be playing drums as well. After our set I plan on staying put at The Belmont to catch Rogue Satellites. Rogue Satellites are a comprised of a guitarist/singer and a drummer. They are an electronic based semi-pop group. Then, I will be headed to The Painted Lady to catch The Spaceheaters. I've seen the name many times and listened to a song here and there. Basically, they are the garbage that is the Detroit Rock N Roll sound a la the late 70s. To cap off the night, I will wind up at Kelly's Bar to see High Speed Dubbing. I saw them for 1 song at The Loving Touch during DIY Fest. From what I can hazily recall, they were good. I want to get my hands on the new cassette they just put out via Loco Gnosis.

Bands I will be sure to miss (Friday):

--The Juliets-Remanufactured pop drawl. Their set was 1 long roll of the eyes for me at The Haiti Benefit. Each song was followed by myself or Metro yelling, "Play Something Fun!" Go see this band if you feel like getting really depressed

--Beekeepers-Lame pop wannabee Belle & Sebastian with a Moby lookalike. They cleared the alley stage at Dally this year. Boring and unoriginal. Plus they have an awful name.

--Friendly Foes-There are 3 reasons you should miss this band: 1. Ryan Allen 2. Metro will be rapping on stage with Ryan Allen 3. It's the same pop garbage that is killing the music scene in Detroit.

Bands I would catch (Friday - 3-5):

Blase Splee-You couldn't miss this band (or 1 of their CDs) at last year's Blowout. Since last year I have seen them several times. For they type of music they're doing (country/rock/pop/dance) they are really good at it. Each song is exclamated by an emotional swing from soft to fast or low to high. Really a good, talented band with great songwriting capabilities.

Trash Camera-This band was completely off my radar until about 1 1/2 months ago. Blues driven rock at its best. They know how to work a crowd, and the frontman, Sean can really work a guitar.

Marco Polio & The New Vaccines-Over the past 4 months, Marco has added a new drummer. He plays over the electronic beats. Its really great. The sound is disco electronic no wave. I caught them about a month ago at The Berkley Front and they played a set comprised mostly of new songs. This band is probably the most entertaining band to see live right now in Detroit.....next to The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre of course.

Woodman-A famliy band playing a cross between 60s rock and jam band music. They have always put on a great show everytime I have seen them. They just put out a great new 7'' that you should pickup. One has a golden ticket in it where you can win a vintage 45 player.

Sat:
I will arrive at The Atlas Bar to catch The Mahonies. They put out a great 45 about 2-3 years ago through X-Records. Spaz rock with a singing drummer and guitarist. After their set, Ill be at Paycheck's to catch Duende!. Mostly because they are my new favorite Detroit band that have been around for quite awhile that I just became acclamated to. After Duende! Ill try and see Silverghost at G of C. For as much as they have been playing out (every day) I have not had a chance to catch one of their sets yet. I will cap off blowout with The Beggars at Paycheks. It's been a couple of years since I've last seen this band. The few times I did catch them, the live show was incredible and a ton of fun.

Bands to avoid:
--The Sights-The 2nd coming has not yet lived up to the 1st incarnation

--The Hard Lessons-You alread know why

--The Cold Wave-3 reasons: 1. Allen James 2. Ryan Allen 3. The bass player looks like he is going to defecate on stage whenever he plays

Bands to catch (Saturday):

--Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor-Right now they are the spearhead of the Detroit Psych Scene. They put out an awesome record last year and have accompanied it by some really great shows.

--Spitting Nickels-I constantly joke that they are my dad's band; but they are pretty good. Straight ahead rock and roll done very well. Plus they're the only band with a member taller than me.

--Los Minstrels Del Diablo-This act is fucking crazy. A set of 2 VJs dressed as Skeletors in suits. They pulsate video to align with their array of synths, theremins, and drum pads. This is a truly unqiue experience and something noone else in Detroit is even close to touching yet. Truly original.

--Rue Moor Counts-Used to be The Bird Dogs. Blues rock n roll awesomely done. Rob Buxton is probably one of the best guitarists in the scene right now. They have a split single out right now on No Gold Records that had a redone tune off their 1st album called "On The Run". The redux is 10 times better than the original and this band has really progressed over time in terms of performance and songwriting.

Hopefully this doesn't get my credentials revoked from MCB but hey, this city needs a better class of criminal. - YOU ARE FIRED - EDITOR

Open Dance Floor Night @ LUNA

I'm not sure how I ever end up at Luna, but I do, this time with Carl Larson of Blasé Splee (blasesplee.com) and Marie Williams of Snaxx (myspace.com/snaxxdeluxe). As expected there was a crowd of drunks around the bar area ogling the fishnet clad bartenders and clamoring over the $2 drink specials. We each bough an arms full of drinks before the price went back up and wandered to the tables next to the dance floor to watch other drunks try to dance with one another.
Bust!
Who would of thought that the allegedly “Best Dance Club in Detroit” (direct quote from both Channel 4 & Metrotimes- hard hitting reporting...) would ever have an empty dance floor? Not a single lonely soul embarrassing his or herself. Granted it was before 11, but come on. They still had those goddamn blinding strobes on though. The best part of the evening was that I saw a friend whose fake ID is apparently working.

GOOD FRIDAY
APRIL 10 2009

Mad Monster 'Burlesk' Show @ The Northern Lights Lounge

This was my first time in the Northern Lights Lounge. On the drive over I was slightly disturbed by the number of police driving all over the surface streets of Detroit, running red lights, making sudden U-turns, and driving the wrong way down one-way streets, as per usual.

The interior is dimly lit, full of square columns covered in mirrors, and decorated in signed Niagara prints (niagaradetroit.com). The show itself was a sordid affair. A punk rock DJ spinning anything from the Clash to the Sonics to a bunch of other bands with a the in front of their name was the backdrop to curvy women stripping with feathery boas and giant feathers, or maybe those were palm fronds.

A few drinks later I was engaged in a bizarre conversation with a dumpy middle-aged man who kept telling me he was a virgin (I think he meant a Virgo) who rambled on about strippers and leprechauns before calling the guitarist of the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre (my life has been revolving around this band ever since the Blowout) that his girlfriend was a munchkin. Unfortunately for my entertainment the situation "de-fused" itself when he opted to walk away rather than throw a drink or better.

Before leaving the freak show I encountered Vincent Troia,
the man behind the upcoming Detroit Art Battle
The 2008 Detroit Art Battle
(in which I participated)
was a spectacle on a grand scale.
The giant space in the fifth floor of the Russell Industrial Center had been numbered and partitioned off with spaces for each group of artists. Blank white walls were erected adjacent the green-grey crumbling brick walls of the facility, and a black dance floor had been placed in the center of the space with a DJ table at one end to keep everything moving.
Tables serving booze to keep everyone comfortably lubricated had lines that wrapped around the area. After three hours the room had been converted to an unbelievable degree: tents were erected on one end, walls entirely painted floor to ceiling, a fire blazed at one end, neon lights stretched out the windows and into the sky, a girl in a painted-on spacesuit was taped to a wall (my piece), and art debris of all kinds imaginable littered the 5th floor.

SATURDAY
APRIL 11 2009

Lucero @ the Magic Stick

I had no intention of going to this show at the beginning of my night, my intention was to hang around a house party in the Knowles/Harrison block in Royal Oak, a notorious party spot to the bored cops who regularly cruise through looking for intoxicated pedestrians and loud parties. The party proved to be a little -yawn- slow for my tastes, although I ran into an old friend who has since moved to NYC.

So- off to the Magic Stick to see a band I'd never heard of with some people I had never met. We arrived comfortably after midnight, so much so that the show was over. All that I got out of it was a few dirty looks from the kids leaving, a staring contest with a guy who looked like Anton Newcombe from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and $2 bottle of water.

I had intended this week to review the new Dan Deacon album Bromst as well as some Medeski, Martin & Wood, but I'll get to it over the next week- maybe.
Keep those peeps peeled people!

Cursive/Man Man @ the Magic Stick

My girlfriend met Jamie (aka Critter Cat... I guess) of Man Man about eleven years ago on AOL instant messenger, and he has evidently been looking forward to the day that they would meet ever since. Hurray for technology, using our combined internetting skills we were able to set up just such a meeting at Man Man's show on Wednesday. We walked in as Man Man was beginning their set of crazy stage antics, dancing to bird calls, forcing non-instruments into making music, and general unorthodox everything. Heavy rhythms set by a maniacal drummer and matched by a churning piano and a slew of bizarre noises.

We sipped vodka tonics and sat near the rear of the dance floor as I was less interested in seeing Man Man for a third or fourth time and more interested in meeting them. I could feel the floor shaking from the frantic dancing happening in front of the stage, a fairly rare occurrence at the Magic Stick. The madness on stage was on par with the handful of other times I had seen them, including such antics as pouring a bottle of water into a wooden bowl held next to a microphone, a muffler somehow miked and used as a snare, and running back and forth to a table piled with eclectic instruments.

Man Man's set ended and my girlfriend wandered around to the back of the stage to chat it up, I was distracted by fellow Motorcityblogger and photographer Amy Palomar and also by a former roommate who was quite upset about a rumor that I had started about myself. After about thirty minutes standing around the new pavilion thing that was built off of the dance floor I wandered to the backstage. In the tiny blue room behind the stage I found my girlfriend seated between two completely smashed girls, one who claimed to be from some southern state I don't like and another who had a tattoo of a child's drawing on her leg. The room was littered in half drank bottles of whiskey, about fifty beer bottles, two or three coolers filled with fresh brews, and an odor of various smoked substances. Critter Cat was desperately trying to mack on my lady friend, but also trying to give me some good info to blog about.

(All I got was that they were making enough money to pay the rent and that he also likes Giorgio Moroder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Moroder )

I missed Cursive's show for the most part, but the southern bell wandered onto the stage toward the end and was quickly pulled off by the singer of Man Man.

Afterwards we hung around the Garden Bowl bar for a few minutes while the bands packed up their equipment where we met a trio of double dude-bros who were very excited for the show they had witnessed. One is in a band that I promised to mention called Ten Ton Diesel Head (myspace.com/tentondieselhead) who has a new album coming out soon, their first in nearly six years.

The Kills @ the Magic Stick

Johnny Retro from everyone's favorite band the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre invited me to attend the Kills and go out for some drinks afterwards. I didn't go.

SATURDAY
MAY 9 2009
Rock & Rummage @ the Belmont

We here at Motorcityblog had a booth at the latest installment of Rock & Rummage, and thanks to everyone who attended and supported the local vendors of avant-guarde swag and doo-dads. We had a free raffle where we gave away tickets to Gogol Bordello, Prodigy, and Blue October to name a few. We also had some swag of our own including some rad T's designed by yours truly, buttons, pins, and a load of stickers. A brief conversation with Casey, the mind behind the madness, reveled that he has done this over 400 times in about 5 years!

It was a fun night of tiny green beers
Everlasting Gobstoppers, and general Rocking and Rummaging.

Andy Shauf
Darker Days
*** out of 5
www.myspace.com/andyshauf

The newest offering from Canadian artist Andy Shauf is a soft and reflective album of mellow folk music. Most tracks feature a quietly picked accoustic guitar, Andy's warm honey voice and maybe a tamborine to keep the beat. There is a definite similarity to the freak-folk-artist-turned-Christian-Jesus-touting singer/songwriter M. Ward. Twangy suburban folk music with floating, flourishing guitars and oooohs and aaaaahs chirping occasionally in the background. It is not necessarily a sad album, but I don't think that it could rightfully be called a happy album by any means. Darker Days treads a fine line between up and down, it could maybe be described as capturing the same vibe as Harold & Maude. The album gives off a vague reminiscence to sitting in the sun or falling asleep in a field or waking up a hour before your alarm goes off.

JCM's Bryan Metro on Special Assignment for MCB - Lady Gaga - Semi Precious Weapons Detroit Live Review from 1/12/2010 Cobo Hall

As you all know Lady Gaga played a couple of
sold out shows here in the Dietroit this week

The story goes something like this:

Many moons ago that other guy from
The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre asked if we
ever had a chance to cover a Lady Gaga show
would we consider sending him to write about
and interview her - I was like....

("are you fucking kidding me??")

1st of all - nothing personal but I am not a fan of the Lady Gaga "scene" although she does write her own music and a lot for others as well....that being said I think she and her management are doing every thing right because she has become bigger than life...really the next and new and improved Madonna....my point to this "blog type rant" is that when the cards were dealt and the opportunity came up that we could send a writer to cover the show I was not going to be sitting at Cobo Arena myself so I remembered that good ol' Bryan Metro was keen to hook that shit up and sent him out press credential to review the show on special assignment for MCB

In particular we need to thank the boys from Semi Precious Weapons who opened the show with from what I was told was a breakout set that was way to short. They took care of the MCB and came through for us with the press cred. When you do good work good things come back to you and we ran a contest and covered the SPW show at Magic Stick a while back and they showed how appreciative they were with solid hookup.

Now on to Bryan Metro's Lady Gaga/Semi Precious Weapons Detroit Show Review - MCB

"There’s a city in my mind, come along and take that ride and it’s alright. And it’s alright.”

I’m flying down I-96 at 100 mph and I’m screaming with, at, the radio, neither of my hands on the wheel of my royal blue rent a car and they are outstretched, with my palms facing up, gesturing a gesture I don’t recognize at the Detroit skyline as it approaches me, my spit covering the windshield because I am thrusting the words at it and my phone keeps ringing but I don’t answer it because I am on my way to Joe Louis Arena to cover the Lady Gaga -SPW show in the city tonight.

It is Tuesday.

I arrive at the will call area to collect my press pass and ticket as the sun is setting (After handing a horrendous looking bum a folded bill, a fake dollar, with the words “I’ll see you in hell” written on it in red). After a very swift two hours, I receive my credentials and choose to enter via the regular, common people, entrance because I wanted to see the crowd before anything else. I was on my third Xanax by this time, not including licking the residue off of the cap at will call while leering at everyone. I have my notebook full of questions for a sister project I will also be working on interviewing the eclectic crowd members. I abandoned this project almost immediately because I heard the first band go on.

I was actually impressed by Semi Precious Weapons out of New York City (my home away from home), even though live music stresses me out. I spoke with an associate, Damien Ross, the next day who described the scene perfectly;
“I had arrived with my wife as the lead singer was lying on his back pulling his pants back on.”

I read somewhere that they were like a marriage of the Sex Pistols and T Rex, maybe, but I immediately recalled a harder rocking Hedwig from Hedwig and the Angry Inch with a dash of the New York Dolls.

What I loved the most is how the front man, Justin Tranter, taunted the crowd, something I can appreciate. The lady behind me muttered, “He’s treating those kids out there like shit.”

Spare me.

The music itself was very solid, a great homage to glam and punk without falling into the modern day pitfalls of pop punk which is pretty fucking terrible. I loved that they pushed the envelope instead of playing it safe. My two favorite moments were when Tranter shouted “Get your tits out” over and over to a very borderline crowd of girls up front and when one heifer obliged, he started yelling “Her tits are massive! Those tits are massive!”

Then he proceeded to pour bottles of champagne into the mouths of the kids up front, also of discernible age. I was sold.

Jason Derulo, or somebody close to that, followed and he, they, played a song that I recognized and there were a lot of shirtless men dancing around and I didn’t see anyone actually singing, even though everyone had mics, and, even though, it was still better and more fun than sitting through an 800 Beloved Halloween show, I went out to the concourse to work on my interview project and it was a success. At one point, I was in hysterics, falling over garbage cans, saying things like “Jesus, tights are in,” and “I haven’t seen this many underage girls and homosexuals since private school.” I made my way through the invisible people, back to my seat in time to watch everyone dancing to a block of Michael Jackson songs. Two hot girls behind me asked what I was working on and, though I wanted to say “My will,” I said “A review.”

They introduced themselves as Alexandra and Brady and I made sure that they got my card and ...

I made a point to tell them that, before the show, my sources informed me that Lady Gaga was in Royal Oak at the famous Noir Leather for a top secret photo shoot by Vogue Magazine contributor Craig McDean exclusively for Interview Magazine with the badass style team consisting of Dave Krieger along with Lisa, Chantelle, and Kristi of the Noir Style Team.

One can imagine what the outfits would consist of, and I took a few minutes to consider this. Based on this bit of info, I probably could have pulled one of these girls, or maybe both, but I turned back because the lights went out and one of them played with my hair the entire time and they really need to call the number on my card and Lady Gaga took the stage behind a giant screen, a neon blue grid, and basically looked to be in Tron 2.0 and I downed the rest of my Xanax because I couldn’t deal with….

Lady Gaga opened with “Dance in the Dark” on what is pretty much the greatest stage set up that I have ever seen; layered, 3D-esque, with screens risers, Xanax, and dancers. She followed with “Just Dance”, performing in a cube, maybe. At this point, I wrote “stage with a stage” in my notebook (Why?). “LoveGame” followed, with a video screen showing someone throwing up all over Gaga which caused me to start bellowing, “This is totally a Renaissance Fair for the bisexual crowd,” for no real reason at all. Seriously, it was Jean Paul Gaultier does Aliens with makeup courtesy of “Blonde Ambition” era Madonna. At this point, I turned to my left and saw a man whose face looked like it had been cut in half with a knife and I joined in with a group of kids laughing at him.

Before the next song, Gaga took the mic and stated that she has a

“huge crotch”

and that she heard there are

“pretty big cocks in Detroit.”

I turned around to see a wave of parents rushing to take their children out of the arena.

“This is great,” I mutter to myself as the last of the Xanax kicks in and I start to slide. Popular favorites “Alejandro,” “Monster,” and my personal favorite, “Teeth” followed. After doing my 1980’s white boy dance for the latter song, I was spent and I started to leave, but not really. The costumes and set seemed to change with every song with little to zero downtime. She played “Speechless” and “Poker Face” solo on the piano, a Tim Burton special. She reprised the radio version of “Poker Face” later and closed the main set with “Paparazzi”. Of course, the encore closed with “Bad Romance” and then I got the hell out of there. Jogging through the concourse, I saw someone get hit so hard in the face that they slid six feet.

My camera was dead at this point, so I just tossed some change at him and kept running, whooping and hollering, pretending that I was an eagle.

Once safely outside, I passed a girl sitting by herself on the Joe Louis steps. She asked me for a ciggy but I told her that I don’t smoke, but offered her a Xanax (I was actually out by then).

“Oh my god, I would totally give you a blowjob right here, right now, for some Xanax,” she shouts.

“Nice try you narc,” I hiss at her and think to myself,

“Yeah, this is my city!”
