Hanging out with Victor Wooten on his stop by the House Of Guitars to give a bass clinic which lasted about 2 ½ hours of him playing music and answering questions by the audience on how to play better bass and other music questions. Wooten is also the bassist for Bela Fleck. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him, play, it is well worth it but it might even be better just to hear him talk. When asked questions, he tends to throw the question back to the person who asked to get them really thinking about what truly makes someone a great musician (or person). He states that "the instrument doesn't make the music ... you do" and tells people that if they want to get ahead as a musician they need to 1) take care of themselves both physically and mentally since when you are in a good place, your music will sound better also, 2) take the time to learn to read music and understand how other instruments work so you can blend your sound with them (esp important if you want to write music), 3) make sure to learn from others even if you don’t fully use everything (he says he has learned many things about music while touring with Stanley Clark but admits he took what he wanted and adapted for his style) and 4) experience life to it’s fullest. To fully grasp what he is about, anyone who likes music or wants to truly get better might benefit from reading his book “The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music”. The closest Victor will be to Detroit in the near future is Rochester, NY’s Jazzfest this summer with Bela Fleck.

While I have never seen them in concert, I do admit the Thin Lizzy show @ Motorcity Casino on Thursday does peak my interest as well as this month’s newest wacko, Charlie Sheen, at the Fox Theatre on Saturday (make sure to drink your Tiger Blood and a stripper for him to sign afterwards).
Detroit by Detroit seems like at interesting idea as various local bands will be playing the music of other local bands. For example, The Satin Peaches will be performing as Lightning Love, Citizen Smile will be acting like Macrame Tiger and the HandGrenades as Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr. Along with Illy Mack, Mick Bassett, the Ashleys and more, this could be an interesting night, esp for those that love and know the local music scenes here in Detroit. So basically, you will get an interesting night of music for only $5 or less that .50 cents a band. I like the math on that.
On a sadder not, we saw the passing of a great blues singer, Pinetop Perkins, at the age of 97. He recently won the Grammy for best Blues album this year (also won in 2008 and he is the oldest-ever Grammy winner) and had been doing some touring. His last Detroit performance was a couple years ago at the Detroit Boogie Woogie and Blues Festival when it was at the Music Hall and he put on a very wonderful performance for someone his age. It is a shame that someone who is an originator passes away just as they are starting to gain some attention. He was one of the last pure Mississippi Delta blues musicians and had been a personal friend to Robert Johnson as well as backing up Muddy Waters for 10 years before forming the Legendary Blues Band with frequent touring partner Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. He will be missed. Here is a performance with Muddy Waters and Pinetop on piano.

One of the notable bands to break through the South Florida metal scene of the late 1990’s, Nonpoint was formed in January of 1998.
Known as one of the most powerful, chaotic and brutal bands to destroy a rock stage, Nonpoint has an extensive tour history and a solid reputation. They have toured with major music heavyweights such as Mudvayne, Sevendust, Skindred, Disturbed, Drowning Pool and Buckcherry.
The band began the process of writing and recording a new album in May 2009. They have been recording in a new studio and Rivera describes it as a “different atmosphere” and explains that it’s “never a mistake to go to new surroundings.” Their music has been taken to another level and Rivera believes that “it’s the little things that are making these songs have a new life.”

Toronto’s brooding indie rock five-some Dinosaur Bones are set to make the most of their 2009 summer. It starts off with an appearance at Eric Warner’s all-ages Over the Top Festival in late May (opening for Sebastian Grainger and the Mountains), followed by what will surely be an unforgettable appearance at this year’s NXNE Festival.
The band is then slated to play Edgefest on June 20th at Downsview Park alongside Metric, k-os, The Stills, The Arkells and many more. Dinosaur Bones will also find themselves on many new stages throughout May as tey will be hitting the road for a string of shows throughout Ontario and Quebec
Their live set has sent critics into a daze, and with only a four song EP available, the band has struck a chord with an ever-growing number of loyal followers in their home city of Toronto. Expect a debut full length later this year, and in the meantime see the band play live to understand why everyone can’t help but sing their praises.
Just eighteen months ago, Dinosaur Bones lead singer/guitarist Ben Fox was writing songs in his Montreal apartment and recording unpolished ideas on a shifty 4-track recorder. Two months later, he decided to pack it in, abandon his English degree, and move back to hometown Toronto with only one thing on his mind; starting a band. Fox found himself back on Toronto soil assembling former band mates and recruiting local musicians. The band went to work arranging Fox’s New York-inspired indie rock recordings, augmenting them with haunting synth layers and a pulsing rhythm section. And so they began gigging at house parties and dark bars, releasing a self titled four-song demo and making a home within the fast city of Toronto. Before long, Dinosaur Bones had found themselves sharing stages with the likes of Handsome Furs, Hey Rosetta!, Hollerado, and Born Ruffians, garnering attention from bloggers and critics alike, and receiving rotation on commercial radio station Edge 102.1. Expect a full-length album in the fall, Edgefest and NXNE appearances, and of course, unforgettable live shows on countless new stages across the country.

To kick off the press conference, Mötley Crüe stopped lunch hour traffic in New York City arriving at Fuse in a Dr. Feelgood era ambulance accompanied by scantily clad nurses. As previously announced, the band is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first #1 album by playing Dr. Feelgood from beginning to end every night of Crüe Fest 2. In addition, fans can expect Mötley Crüe to bring out hits from their entire catalog through their latest hit, Saints of Los Angeles.
