“Tezamen” (together) …..Works by Judi Richards and Brad Richards
“Ricochet” is a good word to describe the way these two artists inspire each other.
By continually confronting each other’s work, they are spurred to explore ideas they may not have thought about if working alone. Of course this is nothing new. Artists inspiring each other is as common as the canvas they create on. However these two are also Mother and Son.
Encouraged by Brad, Judi began seriously pursuing her art after retiring
from a career as an elementary Principal.
He wanted her to develop her creativity because he knew it would bring a special pleasure to her life as it had to his. After experimenting with many different mediums she chose water color and print making for their challenging and dynamic nature. Judi has exhibited and sold her art at various places - The Lawrence Street Gallery, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, and private shows. Last year, Judi’s “Into The Woods” was selected as part of the Michigan Water Color Societies annual exhibition and also for its year long traveling exhibition.
Aside from artistic endeavor, Judi is also a volunteer with the Cranbrook Garden Auxillary and works at the Pure Element Pilates Studio in West Bloomfield as a trained pilates instructor. She lives with her husband George in West Bloomfield.
Brad has been encouraged to create things since his early childhood, thanks to positive reinforcement by both his parents and his own built-in maverick streak. Originally attending CCS on a Summer Fine Arts Scholarship, he discovered automotive design by accident when he got lost in the maze of classrooms at the college.
He ended up in the Industrial Design Department with a big smile on his face. Now he could fuse his love of art and gasoline together – his career was born. After graduating from CCS with his BFA Degree, Brad set out to improve and radically change American vehicles. As an exterior Design Manager at Ford Motor Company, Brad has fathered many vehicles from paper to street including the popular Ford Fusion and the exclusive Harley Davidson pick-ups. Although during the daylight hours Brad can be found shaping sheet metal, by night he creates with an eclectic array of mediums including computer imagery and found objects.
Even though most of his pieces have been described as abstract, they all seem to have that faint smell of gasoline about them. Brad has shown in many local galleries and events in the Detroit area but he prefers to work at home in his studio in Bloomfield Hills, making pieces for his close friends and a small group of collectors who enjoy his work.
Come experience both of these interesting artists under one cozy roof this October with the Opening Night on October 3rd, from 6 – 9 PM at the Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale.
This will be the first time the Mother/ Son duo has shown together and should not be missed.

About the Artist: GodoFredo Catolico Gannod, a Filipino American artist that lives and works in the Detroit Metro area. He has created art using a variety of medium from sculpture and painting to music and film. He received a BFA from CCS in 1996 and has worked in a variety of fields including advertising, prototype design, graphics and the film industry. This show represents some early work, pieces from film and some ongoing studies. His current work is a reflection of the increasingly mechanized response within the modern persona..

10th Annual Motor City Blues & Boogie Woogie Festival - MUSIC HALL - Fri/Sat Oct 3rd/4th
10th Annual Motor City Blues & Boogie Woogie Festival will be hosted by the Detroit Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts on Friday October 3 and Saturday October 4.
The performances will be recorded and nationally distributed programs produced for public television. For its 10th anniversary, the American Music Research Foundation is presenting a particularly rich array of artists with deep roots in the blues, boogie woogie, gospel, soul, and rhythm and blues.
Friday night’s concert features three legendary pianists. New Orleans writer, producer, arranger, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Allen Toussaint was inspired by Professor Longhair and later Fats Domino. As a producer for Minit Records in the 60’s, Toussaint played a primary role in defining the New Orleans R&B sound. Pinetop Perkins is the last of the original boogie woogie and blues pianists.
Perkins spent 12 years playing with Muddy Waters before going out on his own. The Blues Foundation named him Blues Pianist of the year so many times that it eventually “retired” him from the award and named it after him. In 2005 he was given a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement.
Finally, Detroit’s own Bob Seeley will return to the Festival to celebrate his 80th birthday. Seeley is revered around the world as one of the greatest solo boogie woogie players working today.
Saturday night’s lineup features artists who brought the musical sensibilities of the deep south to the industrial centers of the midwest. Bobby Rush began performing in the juke joints of northern Louisiana as a teenager. He moved to Chicago in the mid-50’s, where his bands included the likes of Freddie King, Earl Hooker, and Luther Allison. Rush calls his music “folk-funk,” deeply rooted in tradition but decidedly modern. Rush was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006.
Otis Clay is one of the premier deep soul and gospel singers working today. Born in Mississippi, Clay began performing with such legendary gospel groups as the Pilgrim Harmonizers and the Sensational Nightingales. He moved to Chicago and launched a solo career as a deep soul singer with a series of hit singles in the mid-60’s. His raw, fiery vocals drive an energetic and danceable blend of soul, R&B, and Blues. “Little Sonny” Willis, “King of the Blues Harmonica,” is known for his hot, driving sound and is one of the most respected artists in Detroit. Willis began singing gospel and spirituals in church as a child in Alabama and became interested in the blues after his mother gave him a toy harmonica. He moved to Detroit in 1953 and has been performing in the city and around the world ever since. A very special guest on Saturday night will be Detroit’s Eddie Burns. Burns grew up in the Mississippi delta where his grandfather ran the local juke joint. He began playing harmonica and picked up the guitar after settling Detroit in 1948.
Burns worked as a member of John Lee Hooker’s band and backed him on the legendary recording, “Real Folk Blues.” He has been a fixture in the Detroit Blues scene ever since, with numerous recordings and international tours to his credit.

Jay-Z will perform for thousands of Michigan voters – for free to promote voter registration and to encourage young people to get involved with the campaign. All voter registration applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the Supervisors of Elections Offices by October 6th, 2008 in order to vote in the November election. Members of the public can each pick up one free ticket to the concert at Campaign for Change offices throughout the region. You must be 18 to attend this event.

"Supersuckers have confirmed the long awaited, long overdue release of their brand new full-length album, "Get It Together" for November 25, 2008. This will be the tenth recording released by the band’s self-owned label, Mid Fi Recordings. The November release date also coincides with the bands 20th Anniversary.
In addition to the audio CD, "Get It Together" will include a bonus DVD featuring 90 minutes of exclusive archival live footage featuring classic Supersuckers songs, as well as a few from the new album. The DVD was filmed during a Southern California performance in September 2007.
Get It Together is the first full-length recording since "Motherf*ckers Be Trippin" in 2003. Since then, Supersuckers have released various live shows known as Supersuckers Field Recordings including a DVD, singles with Zeke, The Hangmen, Throw Rag and the Burden Brothers, as well as a singles / b-side collection entitled "Devils Food" and their last studio release entitled "Paid." Coinciding with the band’s 20th anniversary, a special performance on November 29, 2008 is slated at their hometown of Seattle’s Showbox Theatre with Zeke.
"Get It Together" was recorded at Robert Lang Studio in Seattle with Billy Joe Bowers who recently engineered the upcoming AC/DC album. Singer, Eddie Spaghetti explains, "The songs sound so good, so incredibly tight that even we are amazed by our accomplishment. Pride mixes with astonishment as we listen back to this masterpiece! "Get It Together" features 12 solid new slabs of the hard-hitting Supersuckers sound and is chock full of the kind of quality you've come to expect from the band as well as a few new looks into our collective psyche."
Eddie Spaghetti continues, "Songs like "Anything Else" and "She Is Leaving" offer up a new side of the Supersuckers while maintaining the consistency of rock-i-tude you've come to expect from the band. "I'm A F^cking Genius" and "Listen Up" sound more like the classic Supersuckers you've come to know and love throughout the years."
One reason the band sounds better than ever is the recent addition of Scott Churilla. Since the 2004 departure of the original drummer, the band has had a rotating cast of characters behind the drums. It was all very "Spinal Tap" and fun for a while but the band is happy to call them selves a first class, four-piece rock and roll band once again. Churilla spent over ten years as the drummer for The Reverend Horton Heat.
In this age of fly-by-night acts and bubblegum pop, "Get It Together" proves yet again that the Supersuckers deliver the quality goods and are in this for the long haul. The band is ALWAYS on tour, either in a headlining capacity or supporting larger acts such as Pearl Jam, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, and Motorhead among others. The Supersuckers have several career highlight performances including appearances at Farm Aid, and performing as the backing band for Willie Nelson on the Tonight Show. The band’s music is routinely licensed for use in movies and television including: Baseketball, Hype, Deadliest Catch, Viva La Bam, Simple Life, Road Rules Challenge, Real World, Fox Sports, Mountain Dew and countless snowboarding and skateboarding compilations.
The Supersuckers have a devoted following and a fan club (called the P.I.T. – People of Impeccable Taste) of over 1000 members who receive exclusive CDs, DVDs and free tickets to Supersuckers shows during their yearly membership. The Supersuckers are honoring their Goldtop supporters (over a 100 fan who have paid $300 for a lifetime membership) by including their names on the "Get It Together" artwork. The Supersuckers’ fans are extremely devoted and are personally invested in seeing their heroes succeed.
The dedication to making great rock-n-roll records is coupled with their tireless efforts of the Mid Fi team. This in addition to their rabid fanbase have netted impressive sales of over 100,000 units, and over 750,000 plays on their Myspace page since the labels inception in 2002.

Whitey Morgan & the 78s are Detroit's favorite outlaw country group. If you know what country music used to be and loathe the pop chart easy listening that dominates stations like WYCD, you'll love this. The roots of country music are despair, pain, sorrow and anguish expressed through song. Drinking, prison, hitting the road and leaving women--these are the classic themes in country and there is no flip-flopping allowed. These are the things that embody Whitey Morgan's music. Morgan hails from Flint and brings the hard time blue collar aesthetic that dominates that town straight into his songwriting. This show is the Detroit CD Release Party for the band's newest album, Honky Tonks and Cheap Motels.
The Deadstring Brothers are a alt-country group that splits their time and members between London and Michigan. Deadstring Brothers began in fall 2003 and have quickly gained a substantial following. The band has worked to develop their own take on the American Sound, drawing influences from a variety of sources. Not unlike Exile-era Stones, Deadstring Brothers deliver a menacing sound that draws equally on the melancholy of country ballads and the abandon of rock and blues. The bands music is deeply rooted in the storytelling and instrumental traditions of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and the American Outlaw Movement, but is also informed by the song structure and understated aggression commonly associated with Detroit bands.
Shotgun Wedding is a project of The Sights/The Drinking Problem/Spitting Nickels' Eddie Baranek. Baranek heads off into unexpected territory with this one as he and vocalist/upright bassist Katie Grace croon Americana ballads and honkytonk-esque tunes with a pleasing level of sincerity. The Not So Good Ole Boys are up from Cleveland to play us their music to lie, cheat and steal to; showing us how it's done just south of Lake Erie.

Detroit-based Bad Party is a sleep deprived/otherly-fueled duo that can fit in on a wide variety of lineups. Bad Party has played shows with Easy Action, UVU, Awesome Color and many others. Golden Error is a quartet out of Brooklyn. They've got that top special electronic punk combination Brooklyn aesthetic. This band's got high energy shows with obvious influence from local group Human Eye. They have songs about outer space, witchcraft and other such weirdness. Come on out on the start to the best month of the year and show Brooklyn what Detroit's all about.
The Beekeepers are a minimalist Detroit group with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a visual aesthetic that might induce seizures in the UV sensitive. (and cool flyers)
