This one was a lot of fun.
Showed up early to the Lager House and got the best seat in the house. There
was a great turnout, the place filled up in one beer's time. Lo-Fi Bri did a
very entertaining set complete with mini-spaz session, while the Deastro set
was very laid back and thoughtful. Mick Bassett was awesome, I was an
instant fan. That kid has mad skillz, yo. The Friendly Foes were really fun
and got everyone riled up with a cover of Danzig's "Mother", and The Hard
Lessons showed up with a Christmas tree and announced their wedding
anniversary. They seemed to sing to each other as much as to us, the drunken
crowd singing along.
I must say...for an unplugged event, it was pretty fuckin exciting!

BASTONE MEDIA DAYS by Alex Conley
MCB's Alex Conley was invited down for Bastone Media Days
this past Wednesday where they unveiled the new menu for sampling and review.
Bastone of Royal Oak invited media from all over Detroit to sample the new menu, which includes more pocket friendly selections with an emphasis on comfort food.
This adds to an well established menu that has kept me coming back for over a year now.
The focus for 2009 will be placed on there selection of award winning beer's, all crafted by
Brewmaster Rockne Van Meter. Rockne took a silver medal home late last year at the Great American Beer Festival for the seasonal, Bastone Münchner Dunkel.

The Bastone campus also has an excellent wine bar just next door called Vinotecca. This cool, none-smoking bar has just about everything for the casual to serious wine sipper.
If you like your music loud and your clubs dark and smokey, the Commune would be the place to check out first. This club has great atmosphere and serves the same award winning brews and great mixed drinks.
The last on the list but not least, Cafe Habana. This a great little place for some of the best Cuban dishes around. The Carne Asada steak is simply awesome and the dining is intimate yet never overcrowded.

"The Mitten Movie Project is a monthly film night dedicated to screening independent films the first Tuesday of every month at the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak. Under the capable hands of curator, Connie Manglin, the event this month incorporated wide-ranging documentaries by local film makers and the theater played host to a packed crowd. It was interesting to be able to mingle with film makers and film aficionados alike. It was definitely fun to see this community of movie buffs gelling and chilling over drinks at the Afterglow Party hosted at Mr B's Pub. It was Dan’s uncle, who taught him how to sing and play guitar. The first 2 songs that Uncle James taught him were “Peggy Day” (Dylan) & “Single Girl, Married Girl” (Carter Family tune – he learned the Stanley Brothers version.) It’s not an official video, just a little peek inside Dan’s studio, where he recently recorded Jessica Lea Mayfield’s record and the record for the band Hacienda, who will be Dan’s backing band on his upcoming tour.

In an effort to battle Metro Detroit’s rising unemployment, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit is teaming up with 89X and national indie rock band SHIROCK to host the “Everything Burns” tour benefit concert on Friday, February 13 at the Majestic Theatre. All proceeds will help Goodwill Industries provide the training, education and career services to help put Metro Detroiters back to work.
This concert also serves as the kickoff event for Generation Goodwill, a new initiative to give Metro Detroit’s students and young professionals the opportunity and inspiration to make a positive impact on the region. By creating this organization, Generation Goodwill hopes to collectively engage like-minded individuals to help others through philanthropic efforts. Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit to kick off new young adult initiative at February 13 concert at Detroit’s Majestic Theatre
Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit is teaming up with indie rock band SHIROCK and 89X for the February 13 Detroit stop of SHIROCK’S “Everything Burns” tour. The show also features New York’s Lights Resolve and Detroit bands The Electric Playground and One Remains. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Goodwill Industries programs providing Metro Detroiters the education, training and career services they need to overcome employment barriers. In the past two years of the organization’s nearly 90-year history, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has placed more than 2,500 Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County individuals into new jobs and provided education, training and career assistance to thousands more in the region.
The concert is the official kickoff for Generation Goodwill, a new initiative of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit that will give young Metro Detroit adults the opportunity and inspiration to make a positive impact on the region’s success. Generation Goodwill is a community of students and young professionals who care about making the Detroit region a better place to live. The Detroit show is open for all ages on Friday, February 13, 2009 at the Majestic Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is $10 at the door. Scissors and Suckers will be the first release of 2009 for Mick Bassett and the Marthas, prefacing a likely late spring full length release.
Produced by Mick Bassett and Erik Roosen at Detroit Hollywood Studios in Commerce Michigan, Scissors and Suckers ranges from the title track full band rocker, "Scissors and Suckers," to the unaccompanied piano of "Don't You Miss My Ghost?" From the anthemic "Give You the City," to the acoustic closer, "You're My Chaos," with much more in between.

This Friday February 6th, 2009 will be the opening reception for "A Celebration of African
American Aesthetics". This show will feature the artwork of ten critically acclaimed artists
and is a celebration of Black History Month. The show runs from 3pm - 8pm and has many
special events planned including a fashion show beginning at 6pm in the Exhibition Hall
Showplace that will be showing the works from 7 different designers.
There will also be live Jazz from the Sheila Landis Rick Matle Duo.
A VIP reception for networking professionals starts at 6pm in the Russell Gallery
and tickets for this portion of the show will be on sale for ten dollars.
Free food and drinks will be provided to all attendees of the VIP reception.

This Detroit bred artist can be described as Neo-Calligraphic with hints of Realism and Impressionism. He will be showing six pieces in this show
and has been featured in credible art galleries from L.A to Detroit.
Another artist in the show is Christopher Batten. His work is the result of the journeys into
his mind and is featured on the front of our flier. His goal is to use traditional techniques andvivid color to convey his thoughts and emotions to the viewer.
These artists are just two of the fantastic artists you can meet this Friday at the Gallery beginning at 3pm. As a bonus, we would be honored if you would join us as we do a very special Art Gallery Crawl. We will be using our heated bus and a tour guide to give an exciting tour of The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, The Sherry Washington Gallery
