FREE TICKETS / VINYL: PURE BATHING CULTURE (OPENING FOR WIDOWSPEAK) - THE LOVING TOUCH FERNDALE - FRIDAY 11/1/2013

Email motorcityblog@earthlink.net for your shot to win a pair of tickets to see PURE BATHING CULTURE at The Loving Touch Ferndale Friday November 1st 2013 opening up for Widowspeak

Former members of Vetiver, Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille have created a cohesive, introspective album filled with unforgettable melodies, crystalline vocals, soaring synths, and bouncing drum machines -- it's a spiritual and soulful dream pop record, with nods to Cocteau Twins and Talk Talk, layered in misty reverb and warmth. Daniel played guitar on the Damien Jurado record, and Sarah sings on Foxygen's. The duo recently wrapped up a tour w/ Father John Misty, and will tour w/ Widowspeak in the fall.

Winner also gets a signed vinyl copy of Moon Tides

It's a rare and beautiful thing when a band emerges fully formed, but it makes perfect sense in the case of guitarist Daniel Hindman and keyboardist Sarah Versprille’s Pure Bathing Culture. Having backed folk rock revisionist Andy Cabic in Vetiver, the New Yorkers partnered up and moved West in 2011, settling in Portland, Oregon. Building off their past experiences as musical collaborators, in a short time the duo have created a sound that is undeniably their own: soaring synths, chiming keyboards, and shimmering electric guitars move in lockstep with bouncing drum machines. Sarah’s crystalline voice floats on top of it all with divine purpose. It’s a sound that looks back momentarily for inspiration -- Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, Cocteau Twins -- but then fixes its gaze firmly on the present.

Further developing the sound of their acclaimed four song, self-titled 2012 EP, at the start of 2013 they set out to record Moon Tides, their first full length album. Again, they chose to work with producer Richard Swift at his National Freedom studio in rural Cottage Grove, Oregon. Throughout 2012 Swift had called on the duo to help him with other studio projects (Versprille sings on Foxygen’s latest LP and Hindman adds his sprawling guitar work to Damien Jurado’s excellent Marqopa) which only helped to cement the threesome’s musical partnership. For Moon Tides they continued where the previous EP left off, bolstered by Swift’s belief in the duo’s artistic vision and their unique sound, “From very early on, Richard was the person telling us that what we were hearing and wanting to do musically (which at times could feel a little strange or embarrassing to us) was ok and valid and that we should pursue it.”

Like the earlier sessions for the EP, they worked quickly in the studio and improvised parts around the basic song structures that they’d carefully composed up in Portland. Dan explains, “Pretty much all tracks (vocals and instruments) are all first or very early takes. Richard is kind of a stickler about this and I actually don't go in with a clean, pristine idea of what I'm going to play on guitar or any other instrument for that matter, so there's actually a lot of improvisation as far as performances in the studio go.” The results, like the earlier EP, are astounding: the arrangements feel fresh and imaginative, the melodies are unforgettable and the finished songs, most importantly, feel intensely human and deeply spiritual.

It’s this compassion and warmth in Pure Bathing Culture that set them apart. The music is uplifting. It invites self-reflection. It never feels alienating. This, confirms the band, is no accident: “Concepts of spirituality, self actualization, mysticism, new age symbolism and pretty much anything that has to do with humans making sense of why we're all here are all deep, deep muses for us.” To that point, even the album title Moon Tides alludes to self-discovery: “We are deeply inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides. Particularly in the sense that the tides and the ocean are comprised of water and the element water is often associated with human emotion.” While these heady themes can be difficult to explore in a pop song, Pure Bathing Culture makes it feel effortless. “Pendulum” is a perfect mid-tempo album opener that pulses and shines. Other standout tracks from the album -- “Dream The Dare”, “Twins”, “Scotty” and “Golden Girl” -- are slices of reverb-drenched, soulful, danceable electro-pop, that musically and lyrically tap into an introspective worship of the natural and psychic mysteries that surround us. Pure Bathing Culture's debut album Moon Tides is optimistic modern music for souls who seek to explore the infinite.

Obits @The Loving Touch

Obits
Friday, October 5th, at the Loving Touch
$12, doors at 8

Bed & Bugs is the third album by Brooklyn, NY garage-punkers Obits. Bed & Bugs was recorded somewhere in Arlington, VA at an unnamed recording studio, simply and rather unhelpfully described as “upstairs.” It was recorded by Nikhil Ranade, with additional mixing by Eli Janney and Geoff Sanoff. On listening to Bed & Bugs, the discerning listener may well note more than a passing similarity to such bands as Hot Snakes, Edsel, Drive Like Jehu, Girls Against Boys, Pitchfork, possibly Television or the Wipers. With the exception of those last two, Obits share members with all of those bands.

Picture This: Forever Festival Freedom Hill Fri, Sept. 27

It's been a few days since Forever Festival hit Freedom Hill and the lasting effects from the show: the lights, the noise, the confetti and glitter may indeed be with me the rest of my life:

In one form or another, the crowd at this show came to party hard.

Beats Antique played a rousing set that started with violin and horns, ending with masks and percussion.

The second stage had local acts as well as national acts. Here's Walden and one of the dancers that were adding some flair to the night.

The main stage area started getting electric with Morgan Page's set that when his hands weren't in the air he was setting the controls for heavy dance mode.

The crowd got thicker and crazier as the night wore on.

Calvin Harris was hidden behind massive lights and fog cannons while Flux Pavilion closed out the night with some loud aggressive dub step.

You can see even more pics from the show at the MPAD Media Facebook page.

The Hounds Below and Family of the Year at Saint Andrew's Hall in Detroit, 10/3/2013

If you want to be a part of Detroit music history, you'd better get to St. Andrew's Hall on Thursday night. The Hounds Below, featuring Jason Stollsteimer from The Von Bondies, opens for L.A.'s Family of the Year. The Hounds Below's debut, You Light Me Up In The Dark, is a complete record that blends many modern styles from post-punk to grunge and garage, and even a really incredible Echo and the Bunnymen-style song. You want to listen to this entire recording from start to finish, each track is stellar. The Hounds Below have played with some of the best live bands I've seen, including Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Heavy, Company of Thieves, The Like, and Band of Skulls. The Hounds Below has an energy that rivals any live band - you should NOT miss this show!

Billy is back to one of his favorite rooms to create music.

"Music will tell the world who you are, based on what you present and how you present it. You can't lie through this medium.  "Therefore I find myself trying again to connect the dots, to learn. Through this relationship with Asere and the music we make together, it's helping me to connect. I'm reconnecting with my roots in Panama in order to see my future better through this clearer view of my past."

And as with any artistic endeavor, the personal becomes the universal, and Billy Cobham's most recent musical journey-back to his beginnings-will be shared and savored by his listeners around the world.

Legendary guitar stylist Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), along with cohorts bassist Kiki Solis (Knife In The Water), drummer Ron Miller (Up The Academy), and guitarist Mark Cisneros (Deathfix), embark on a full US/Canadian tour beginning October 6th. The new album, 'Haunted Head', was engineered and mixed at the now well-known Harveyville Project High School in Kansas and is their third for In The Red Records. Waking from a nap in the swamps of outer space, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds ride a geisterbahn into the hypnagogic, a place between sleep and consciousness also known as the “Haunted Head”.

Though often called the "wildest show on earth" and known for their spectacle of a stage show, King Khan & The Shrines aren't afraid to mix their velvety pop and soul-infused, psyched-out numbers with meaning and seriousness evident through album title, Idle No More, named after an indigenous-rights movement, and plenty of songs about the state of the world we live in today. Consider album track, "Darkness," which, as King Khan says, is about the "ugly beasts that must be tamed inside of us all" and also his "attempt to do something as real as Nina Simone." Visually presented through the excellent new stop-motion video, written, directed and produced by Benjael Halfmaderoz/Hylas Film, the "Darkness" video is the perfect accompaniment to the melancholy message set forth in this song. So, take a minute, soak in the "Darkness," read about the video via T: The New York Times Style Magazine's worldwide premiere, and then kick things back up with the rip roaring horn lines, southern fried guitar riffs and lyrseric melodies of Idle No More's previously shared "Born to Die."

This weekend at Detroit Film Theatre - TALES OF THE NIGHT

TALES OF THE NIGHT

Detroit Film Theatre

    (France/2011—directed by Michel Ocelot)

Tales of the Night is renowned animation auteur Michel Ocelot (Azur & Asmar)'s first foray into 3D animation. A hit at the Berlin Film Festival, the film extends the earlier shadow puppet style of Ocelot’s Princes and Princesses, with black silhouetted characters set off against exquisitely detailed Day-Glo backgrounds bursting with color and kaleidoscopic patterns – the subtle use of 3D creating a diorama-like effect. A sophisticated modern tribute to Lotte Reiniger’s pioneering visual style as showcased in her 1926 classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the film weaves together six exotic fables each unfolding in a unique locale, from Tibet, to medieval Europe, an Aztec kingdom, the African plains, and even the Land of the Dead. In Ocelot’s storytelling, history blends with fairytale as viewers are whisked off to enchanted lands full of dragons, werewolves, captive princesses, sorcerers, and enormous talking bees - and each fable ends with its own ironic twist. In French with English subtitles. (84 min.)
