11th Annual DAMNED Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness

"Enlightenment is found within the darkest of hours"

Detroit, MI - On October 25th through 27th 2018 at the Tangent Gallery/Hastings St Ballroom in Detroit comes an extraordinary assemblage of 125 artists from across this world to display 150 of their most introspective creations at the 11th Annual DAMNED Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness. From the infamous to the freshest of local and international talent, this prodigious congregation will allow us a glimpse within the diverse shadows of id and ego…of overall mind and encompassing soul guaranteed to intrigue, disturb, inspire or repulse.  Rising from within the ashes of Detroit’s historic institution of Devil’s Night, this is not Halloween-themed art but an immersion within the immeasurable realms of consciousness through an elegant ambiance of live ethereal music and cirque/butoh-inspired performances.

There are 3 nights of DAMNED, each with its own distinct theme for the ambiance and performances that flourish within the exhibition:
  • 10/25 “The Darkness” – A night of introspective exploration within the shadowed and primal essence of self. This opening night features an intimate VIP Preview/Artist Reception, an absinthe tasting courtesy of Two James, an on-site chef preparing hot hors d’Ĺ“uvres and experimental aerial and butoh-inspired performances.
  • 10/26 “The Enlightenment“ – A night of the extrospective self enlightened through light, fire and the ethereal.  This gala night features an on-site chef preparing a sampling of internationally-inspired tapas with flavored mead tasting courtesy of B Nektar Meadery and exotic fire, aerial and experimental performances.
  • 10/27 “The Masquerade“ – A festive celebration through a menagerie of exotic cirque, sensual rhythms and masquerade. This closing night features the formal mask-mandatory masquerade ball, an elegant 13-dish strolling dinner prepared by on-site chefs, Ginger Devil whiskey sampling courtesy of Rusted Crow Spirits, sensuous dance performance interludes, the dreamworld aural ambiance of DJs Josh Burge (Plastic Passion) and Slofu (Happy Endings) and a menagerie of strolling cirque performances all night.  This night is mask mandatory and proper attire only.
DAMNED, first and foremost, is an exhibition of the intensely personal creations that are often born from within the artist’s most darkest hours that often returns them towards the light. DAMNED then cultures an intriguing visual ambiance of art-inspired explorative performance vignettes with the region’s most creative talent.  For 2017, the astounding performance roster includes Satori Circus, Detroit Circus, Jade Ashekerra, Shadowe Feuer, Jennabelle Feuer, Stella Isis Rothe and Rocky Raquel. Aurally, the haunting gallery soundtracks are custom designed by Life Toward Twilight with the mesmerizing live music ambiance of Dixon's Violin and Marcus Copernicus.
Then on Saturday October 27th, DAMNED will transform the exhibition into a sensuous celebration of extravagant delicacies, libations and dance with a formal, mask-mandatory Masquerade Ball.  With doors opening at 7pm for private viewing of the exhibition, this very intimate VIP engagement will include an elegant 13-dish strolling dinner with on-site chefs and sensuous dance performances interludes to further enhance the senses and inspire. Access to the lush and exotic VIP Lounge is included all night with complimentary snacks and refreshments.  The public doors then open at 9pm with a special aerial performance by Detroit Circus at 9:30 amidst the art. Then from 10pm until 2am, the evening becomes enveloped with the dreamworld aural ambiance of DJs Josh Burge (Plastic Passion) and Slofu (Happy Endings) bringing a carefully selected mix of ethereal dreampop, lush trip hop and smooth grooves all blended with alternative classics for a night that will delight your aural senses.  All within a menagerie of exotic cirque performances throughout the venue.
Tickets are now available online and at Noir Leather in Royal Oak and River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte starting at $15.

+ 2018 DAMNED FUNDRAISER +

HELP US HELP DETROIT’S HOMELESS:  At midnight Saturday October 27th 2018 within the formal masquerade ball of the DAMNED Exhibition, a single raffle winner will be chosen to win a uniquely exquisite prize: The new Detroit Deconstruction Skull Ring XVI© created by avant-garde fine alternative jeweler Atelier Gothique.  All proceeds from the raffle will go to benefit our favorite charity, Burners Without Borders, to help feed and clothe those in need on our city streets through the hand packing and one-on-one giving of survival backpacks.
Each year, the raffle has raised up to $1500 that went directly to our favorite charity, Burners Without Borders Detroit, whose sole mission is to help feed and clothe those in need on our city streets through the hand packing and one-on-one giving of survival backpacks.  These packs contain a variety of simple needs often taken for granted within our busy lives: toiletries, feminine products, underclothing, canned goods, water, plasticware, the back pack and more.  BWB also collects hats, gloves, coats, and blankets during our colder months to coordinate volunteer drives to find and give to those sleeping in the streets.  This is real-life grassroots community “giving” by volunteers in the true spirit of the word with no corporate management profiteering!
Be the change you wish to see in Detroit!

+ A MESSAGE FROM BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS +
“Creating random acts of kindness and service to Detroit's homeless
one supply-filled backpack at a time.”
As we all know, Detroit is on hard economic times and it’s getting harder. This is when community-led grassroots organization and networking is needed to help address gaping needs where existing cultural and societal systems are failing. Burners without Borders Detroit (BWBD) is a local chapter of a worldwide volunteer-based outreach organization coalesced from a collective instinct to serve and assist those in need on our streets with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Over the past seven winters, BWBD has collected thousands of items generously donated by the community and organized hundreds of volunteers to create supply-filled backpacks to give directly to those who do not or are unable to go to shelters during the cold months. Since 2009, the DAMNED Exhibition and fine alternative jeweler Atelier Gothique have collaborated annually with BWBD to coordinate collections of needed canned food and financial donations through admission discount offerings and fine jewelry raffles. Through this, we have been able to purchase hundreds of new backpacks each year and fill them not only with the donated canned goods, but with purchased items such as hand warmers, blankets and toiletries. We hope to continue with the goal of giving over 300 backpacks this year, perhaps with a gift certificate to a participating local restaurant so the homeless are able to escape the extreme weather and find some comfort.

As we begin this year's campaign in collaboration with DAMNED and Atelier Gothique, we thank each of you for your past donations and for any future assistance you give to Burners without Borders Detroit. Please know that we can not do what we do without the generous help of people like you.

SATORI CIRCUS PRESENTS: 30th ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCES!

Detroit's only performance artist SATORI CIRCUS will celebrate his 30th Anniversary with performances from a 30-year oeuvre of avant-garde musical theatre.

On Friday and Saturday, September 28th & 29th, 2018, come celebrate this performance career milestone for two performances at The Tangent Gallery/Hastings Street Ballroom. These eclectic performances have graced the art galleries, black box spaces, streets, churches, and stages big and small in the Detroit area and throughout the U.S.

SATORI CIRCUS was conceived as a one-man orchestration early in 1988, coming to fruition the fall of that year. Hard to define, this artist is not clown and not mime. Just a ball of energy, this life-force started inhabiting a myriad of characters from man to woman, to child, to things. Along with music and pantomime, film elements and words (spoken or sung), slapstick and movement and cloaked behind clown white and various facial accents, SATORI CIRCUS’ world came to life wherever the stage.
He celebrates a performance career that has exceeded 25+ self-written/produced stage shows that included performances in 1515 Broadway, Detroit Artist Market, Scarab Club, College of Creative Studies, Detroit Institute for Arts, St. Albertus Church (a 146year old historic church), Oakland University/MeadowBrook, on America’s Got Talent and a 25 anniversary show at the Detroit Institute of Arts/Detroit Film Theatre.
It has also taken him across the country to perform in Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Pittsburgh and New York.

SATORI CIRCUS creative director and main performer, Russell A. Taylor has been on the scene for 38 years. Starting back in 1980 as lead singer for the rock band, The Nasties, and then as co-founder of alt-art-punk band, Fugitive Poetry in 1983. SATORI CIRCUS spoke, sung and moved for the first time at the Michigan Gallery in 1988 and found a home at the original black box-art theatre space, 1515 Broadway, Detroit. Thru the years he has been recognized for his work and has received accolades from local and national press. He won a Detroit Music Award for "Outstanding Live Performance," in 1994 and in 2012. His photo has graced the cover of the Metro Times and he has been called “…easily the Best Performance Art Group Detroit has produced. It should be seen if only to witness a New Direction in Art.” - Detroit Free Press and “A love for the absurd, SATORI CIRCUS is a singularly uncanny theatre-going experience that’s a little bit Performance Art and a little bit Rock Opera.” - Metro Times.

The 30th Anniversary show will feature some of the vignettes from his past shows such as “EQUILBRIUM”, “MOSES:39”, “Child-Proof”, “Funy As Hell”, “Twilight Barks”, “63mins (of random balance)”, “…poems we tell ourselves…” and a most recent performance art piece, “Stroke”. There will even be a couple surprise selections from the myriad of guest appearances SATORI CIRCUS as made throughout the years that include Theatre Bizarre (Det.), DAMNED (Det.), Dirty Show (Det.), Michigan Burlesque Festival (Det.), Atrocity (Pittsburgh), WIZBANG (Cleveland & Det.), Performance Art Festival (Cleveland) and the Erotic Poetry & Music Festival (Det.).

Featuring dear friends throughout the evening:

Brain Dambacher - light and stage design
Tim Suliman - sound design
Sadaat Hossain - keyboards and vocals
Marcus Concernicus - keyboards
Ryan McInnis - performer and vocals
Robin Schweihofer - performer and vocals
Matthew Ryan Surline - keyboards and vocals
Lushes LaMoan - performer and vocals
Scott Dambacher - performer and vocals

Contributing to these evenings will be other dear friends. Photographers Brett J. Lawrence, A. Owen Layne and Rick Bielaczyc, who will have photographs on site for sale, and the wonderful clothing designs and fashions of Ivy’s Corsetry.

SATORI CIRCUS is also the subject of a film documentary on his art called "Being Satori Circus", currently being filmed for release in 2019. Also, to honor this legacy the local Motor City Brewery has issued a commemorative limited release featuring his likeness on cans.

Be prepared for the unknown and come with an open heart and head to witness a hybrid of performance art rarely seen in this Detroit Metro Area. We guarantee that you have never seen anything like this and you may never again. Sometimes, journeys end where they begin and begin where they end

SATORI CIRCUS PRESENTS.…"SATORI CIRCUS: The Choir"

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! For One Performance ONLY!

On Saturday, August 25th, 2018, SATORI CIRCUS will present almost 30 years of original music with a new twist-by performing them with a choir! SATORI CIRCUS, accompanied by a slew of Detroit and Port Huron friends, will reinterpret original tunes as new arrangements via A Cappella and perform them live at the historical site of St. Albertus Church, one of the city's oldest buildings at 146 years old! Selections will come from performance art pieces such as “EQUILBRIUM”, “MOSES:39”, “Child-Proof”, “Funy As Hell”, “63mins” and “poems we tell ourselves”.

A thought had occurred a few years back for S.C. while reading an article about the Judson Church in New York City, which lead to reminiscing about the mid to late 80’s in Detroit, when S.C. was a young performance artist, and venues such as abandoned buildings, galleries, lofts and sometimes churches were used for performance. Whether it be dance, music ensembles or other alternative performance, these spaces were a great breeding ground for difference, self-challenges and stretching the imagination.

So with a wild thought at the forefront of his mind, S.C. started reaching out to churches that possibly would allow something wild and organic, and possibly on the verge of chaos to be performed within its walls. So the networking began. And from word of mouth, to friend to friend to acquaintance, S.C. was introduced to Matt Baka of St. Albertus Parrish, who opened the doors to the church and galvanized the concept of S.C. and friends singing songs from years past…and giving them new life with a new audience.

St. Albertus Church is the Mother Church of all Polish parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The parish was founded in 1872 and was the spiritual home to many Polish immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. St. Albertus Church, erected in 1884, still stands proudly at the corner of St. Aubin and Canfield as an icon of Detroit's Polonia. The iconography of the church is spectacular and is often compared to the finest Churches of Europe. The church was declared State of Michigan Historic Site and placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. The parish was officially closed in 1990 after 118 years as an active parish. A group of former parishioners and historians formed the Polish American Historic Site Association (PAHSA), a 501-C (3) non-profit group, to care for the Church and adjoining properties as a historic site and museum of cultural history.

SINGER-SONGWRITER EMILY ROSE ALBUM RELEASE CONCERT!

Award-winning singer-songwriter Emily Rose will mark the release of her third full-length studio album with a concert on Saturday, August 18 at 8pm at The Ant Hall in Hamtramck, Michigan. Celebrate the highly anticipated album, ‘Wake Up Brave’ as Rose unveils the songs she has labored over for nearly three years. Rose will perform solo, in addition to being joined by her musical trio-mates Audra Kubat, and Tamara Finlay. Fellow singer-songwriters Scott Fab and Carmel Liburdi will open the evening with their original music sets.

The Detroit based singer-songwriter has dazzled audiences in her hometown and beyond for several years now and was named “Outstanding Americana Vocalist” by the Detroit Music Awards in 2018. Her roots are steeped in poetic songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Fiona Apple, and Rose began composing and performing her own music as a teen. Her mode of articulation borders on confessional, while grounded in observational story-telling. Taking on uncommon narratives and building their soundtrack – her reward is in the telling. Music writer Scott Kraus wrote,“Emily Rose embodies the concept of songwriting as calling over profession.” She released her first studio album in 2006.

In addition to extensive touring throughout the Midwest, Rose has had her songs included in movie soundtracks and the song “Seven Rooms” in the Detroit: Become Human video game. She is also an author of her first book of poetry, “Cemetery Tea Party” released in 2014. Rose has been a music educator for almost a decade. Her latest body of work, ‘Wake Up Brave’ will bring into focus the canon of this compelling and poignant artist.

Scott Fab creates a meditative intimacy through stories of everyday life. Scott’s latest record, ‘Leave My Friends’ was released last year garnering him showcases at Folk Alliance Midwest and Kerrville as a New Folk finalist.

Carmel Liburdi is a singer/songwriter who performs alternative folk with ragtime, punk, and jazz influences. Liburdi's fun performances are full of energy and soul. Her most recent release "Insomnia Slumber Party" was nominated for a Detroit Music Award.
