(nice work Bill! - kirk)

And now, on to the Concours d’Elegance which is going on this Sunday, Aug 3rd at Meadow Brook Hall.

This is my favorite event in the area, mainly because of the quality of the cars that are invited to the event. That’s right, the cars are invited! The Concours people send out teams of people that look for the best cars on the circuit and invite them to the show. In the past few years, they have had everything from the only existing Ann Arbor to one of the only remaining Futureliners (giant buslike vehicles that traveled between cities before TV to promote the current line of vehicles for GM). This is looking to be a great year and don’t forget to look for me at this weekend’s show.

Starting off, if you are in the Meadowbrook/Rochester area on Friday morning starting at 8:30AM, your truly will be riding in one of the classic cars during the Concours d’Elegance Motoring Tour. It starts at Meadowbrook and goes north to Scripp’s Estate and then at 12:15PM the tour goes to Rochester and then departs Rochester at 2:30PM back to Meadowbrook Hall. This will be a fun time to see these beautiful cars in action.

On Saturday at Meadowbrook, they will be having an open grounds event and you can attend various seminars dedicated to collecting classic Ferrari’s, wine tasting and a cooking demonstration with renowned chef Michelle Bommarito (you will have to get reservations for the seminars, so go to www.meadowbrookconcours.org). There will be some cars out you can look at for a taste of the main event Sunday and you can test-drive the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis. They will also be having half price tours of Meadowbrook Hall which is a beautiful building with some very nice architecture. I esp like the children’s playhouse in the gardens that is bigger than
my apartment. Basically it is an undersized house for the kids to play “house” in. Ah, to have $!

The main event is on Sunday and runs from 10AM-4PM (college students with ID get in free). Among the special cars is the new BAT 11 which looks like something out of Blade Runner. Designer by local Michigan man Dr. Gary Kaberle, the car is a tribute to the uniquely designed BAT’s and his wife, Debbie, who passed away due to cancer. Dr Kaberle sold his BAT 9 to help pay off her medical bills and give her a few more good years. He later designed this car in her memory and the story is currently be optioned as a book and a possible movie (currently being looked at by Disney).

You can also see the Mitchell concept cars which were designed by the legendary Bill out of his secret basement "Studio X”. Among the cars you can see at the Concours this year are his 1959 Corvette Sting Ray Racer, the 1961 Mako Shark and the 1969 Corvette Manta Ray. You will also see some flying cars including the 1932 Helicron and Ed Sweeney’s 1956 Aerocar (the only one of six that still flies) which is the only airplane in history certified for highway driving. It is easily converted from airplane to car, in minutes, by folding and detaching the wings. Meet the Jetson’s future! Well, almost.

The Concours will also be celebrating the 100th anniversary of both GM and the Model T which will have many representatives. You can also see vintage motorcycles (specializing this year with sidecars), a celebration of the cars of 1933, significant Ferraris, 8 litre Bentleys (6 of the 100 built) and a 1935 Duesenberg that was given as a gift to Clark Gable from Carol Lombard. I hope to see some of you out there. I’ll be wandering around the ground and taking some pictures for the blog with my new digital camera which I am learning to use. Take care and listen to Wild Bill Monday and Thursday mornings from 8-10AM on www.wxou.org

Take care and see you around!
I'm on my way to see Neil Diamond @ the Palace tonight and Rancid @ Clutch Cargo's tomorrow.

Objects DʼArt -Illuminated Pleasures - Lawrence Street Gallery - Sat Aug 2nd 2008

Objects DʼArt -Illuminated Pleasures
Larry Zdeb and Gene Smith

Show Dates :
July 30 - August 30

Reception: Saturday, August 2m 6:00-9:00 p.m. (public invited)

Larry Zdeb and Gene Smith say that "Objects d'art”, is an exploration into the past. Influenced by Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell and Robert Rauschenberg, the artists use vintage found objects as a major component in their constructions along with elements of Dada, randomness and chance. Layer after layer, the surfaces of these constructions reveal a variety of stimulating possibilities to the viewer.

Included in this show is a collection of box constructions, many of which feature battery-powered lighting. With the windows of the gallery blacked out and interior lights off, gallery visitors can turn on each box beginning with the smallest. In the dark, the normal
parameters of the boxes are lost, provoking imaginative associations. The beauty of these assemblages is in pushing the envelope beyond the boundary of the conventional. Expect the unexpected!

Larry Zdeb is from Troy.
Gene Smith is a former Michigan resident, now living in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Gallery hours:
Wed, Thurs & Sat, Noon - 5.
Fri, Noon - 9

Lawrence Street Gallery is at 22620 Woodward, Ferndale
(East side of Woodward, two blocks south of 9 Mile).

FREE CD: Monte Negro's CICATRIX due out Aug 5th

1st emailer to gone WITH A MAILING ADDRESS gets this golden nugget

"MTV Tr3s has joined forces with Monte Negro and two other California-based alternative rock bands (Astra Heights, The May Fire) to bring their diverse takes on the burgeoning Latin alternative scene to the West and Midwest for six weeks in August and September. With a new records coming out on August 5th from Monte Negro (Cicatrix / Epic Records), the tour kicks off on August 6th in San Diego.

The music of Monte Negro, defies a simple description. Most say melodic rock, which is true, yet there are distinct undertones and layers making it eclectic and bohemian, American yet definitely worldly. Their music has landed them in magazines such as Spin, La Banda Elástica, and Billboard, they have worked with famed producer Tone (Green Day, Carlos Santana) and played alongside a diverse line up of bands like Todos Tus Muertos, Matisyahu, 311, Coldplay, NIN, Incubus, At The Drive In, and Molotov. Monte Negro most recently performed with the Mexican alternative band Zoe and L.A.’s multiethnic band, Ozomatli. Monte Negro was also MTV Tr3s’s “Descubre & Download” artist (January through March of 2008). The band’s new release Cicatrix will be featured on The LEAK July 29th – August 5th (www.music.mtvtr3s.com).

Monte Negro is a bilingual band that has devoured enough music genres over the years to do justice to the bilingual and bicultural musicians that constitute the group. Digesting healthy portions of Jane's Addiction, The Cure, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols, Monte Negro has also piled onto its proverbial plate Latin-alternative rockers such as Caifanes, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Maldita Vecindad, Mano Negra, Soda Stereo, and Spinetta. The Cannibals - Zeitgeist Theatre

The Abreact proudly presents Hungarian playwright George Tabori's masterpiece
"The Cannibals"
running August 1st through the 16th at The Zeitgeist Gallery and Performance Venue.

George Tabori, who died in 2007 at the age of 93, is a Hungarian-bornplaywright and director, and is regarded as a very significant figure in 20th century theater, especially as a translator of Bertolt Brecht. This dark, disturbing, and yet warmly human play, was the first play after World War Two to occur wholly in Auschwitz, where Tabori's father died in 1944.

The story of two Auschwitz survivors who reunite 25 years later, they are joined by the children of those who perished to re-enact the dinner partythat determined all of their fates. This epic story of history and memory, described by Tabori as a "horror farce", uses a unique mix of psycho-drama,revue, and tragi-comedy to examine the terrible choices these men wereforced to make, and brings the death camp's slogan, "One man's death isanother man's bread", horribly and viscerally to the stage.

The play is directed by the winner of Boxfest 2007, Alison Christy, and features a powerful lineup of familiar faces, along with some new ones,including- Dax Anderson, Keith Kalinowski, Katie Galazka, Linda RabinHammel, Josh Campos, Lisa Melinn, David Legato, Sandy Menzel, SeanPavarenti, Rob Rose, Frannie Shepard-Bates, Carolin Hayes, and LaurenSchafer.

WILD AT HEART - Monday July 28th 2008

Here is today's blog - Bill
Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blogHe has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Wild At Heart
The time is fast approaching for my favorite car show of the year (though saying car show doesn’t really seem to do it justice). The 2008 Concours D’Elegance (http://www.meadowbrookconcours.org/) will be this Aug 3rd at Meadowbrook Hall and I cannot wait. The Concours is special among car shows because the vehicles are hand-picked to appear in the show and is recognized as one of the most prestigious annual auto events. This means that you won’t see Bob’s ’64 Chevy, but will instead be presented with some of the most beautiful and unique cars to grace Meadowbrook Hall’s lawn (a 1920's Tudor-revival mansion built by the widow of John Dodge which you can also tour). One the highlights for this year’s show will be the North American debut of the BAT 11, the newest member in the family of Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica concept cars (previous BAT’s were designed by the legendary Nuccio Bertone and Franco Scaglione in the mid-1950s, built on the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint chassis and are highly regarded for their futuristic but functional curves).

This BAT was designed by Michigander Dr. Gary Kaberle. Also included in this year’s show is Ed Sweeney’s 1956 Aerocar, the only airplane in history certified for highway driving. It is easily converted from airplane to car, in minutes, by folding and detaching the wings. Among the other cars that grace the lawns, expect to see cars which fall into the following categories: significant Ferraris, 8 Litre Bentleys, 16-cylinder cars, vintage motorcycles with sidecars, the class of 1933 (a landmark year in automotive history), Voisin cars and cars which celebrate the 100th anniversary of both General Motors and the Model T. It should be a great show and will be my fifth annual appearance at the festival. I will have someone from the Concours on my show on Thursday (tune in between 8-10AM on http://www.wxou.org/).

I had the pleasure of talking to Brandon T Jackson this past week. He is a local actor who plays in his first big summer film with Tropic Thunder. He plays a young rapper, Alpo Chino, in the film whose best moments come when he plays against Robert Downey Jr (who plays Kirk Lazarus, an Australian actor who gets skin pigmentation so he can play a black army hero). Jackson stated that most of the dialogue was improved on the set (such as a Jefferson’s monologue) and it is one of the reasons to see the movie when it premieres on Aug 13th. Brandon was pretty down to earth and seems to really appreciate what he has. He grew up in the Detroit suburbs and has had some limited success appearing on his own TV show with Wayne Brady, a part in the movie ‘Roll Bounce’ and a comedy tour ‘Teens of Comedy’ which he hopes to continue.

His one piece of advice for young actors growing up in Detroit is to make sure to get a good education because knowledge is power. I will be doing a preview of the film when it gets closer to its release date.Dan McGowan stopped by the studio this week and we talked about his movie premiere of “The Tower” which happened last Thursday at the Main Art Theatre. This locally made horror film (filmed in downtown Detroit and Pontiac, MI) is not bad for a first time low budget effort. Inspired by Raimi and low budget horror films like ‘Rock N Roll Nightmare’, the film focus’s around an abandoned tower which has a mysterious light despite having no power (the film was based a real Detroit urban myth). Doug is driven by a desire to uncover the reason for the light and disappears into the tower. His sister Lucy has a dream that her brother is trapped inside and embarks on a journey to rescue him. Along the way she comes across flesh-eating demons and mysterious otherworldly creatures.

Having filmed most of the movie in a recently fire damaged building, this leads to a nice atmosphere for the film that makes it better than a lot of its current competitors. The story suffers from the typical low budget pains of back-lighting, some stilted dialogue and overlong scenes, but these are minor and there is plenty here for the low budget fans. The film will be making the festival rounds (Dan is hopeful for Sundance) and will be having other local screening so keep a look out for this film when it next rears it head. I give the film a C+ for it’s wonderfully played bad guy and it’s nice use of local talent and locations.

For more info, go to thetowermovie.com.I would also like to give kudos out to a young singer Hana Pestle who opened the Blues Traveler/Live/Collective Soul show last Thursday. This cool, attractive 19 year old singer came on my show that morning and played a few tunes, including a nice cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”. This is her first big tour and she is traveling with her father whose job as a teacher has allowed him to act as her tour manager as she learns the ropes. She loves this tour and esp times when the guys from Collective Soul invited her onstage with them or Popper played harmonica with her during her set. For more info, check her out on http://www.myspace.com/hanatunes.

Last Friday was a great day for free music in Detroit with concerts at both Campus Martius and the RenCenter. Guitar legend Rick Derringer put on a great show by the waterfront playing his hits, such as “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo”, “Real American” (used by Hulk Hogan as his intro music) and the song he made famous with his first band the McCoys, “Hang On Sloopy” (which is the official rock song of Ohio). Upcoming free shows will include The Guess Who – August 1, Kansas – August 8, Blue Oyster Cult – August 15 and from my hometown of Rochester, NY, Foreigner – August 22. This Friday was also a 4th Friday which included performances by the Bacon Brothers (yes, Footloose fans unite) who weren’t bad in a folk indie sort of way (I really liked their song “Artie” about a giant squid) and Carlene Carter (the daughter of June Carter and Johnny Cash) who played a lot of Carter family favorites along with a nice version of her father’s “Ring Of Fire”. The fourth Friday in August will feature local favorite Nomo and reggae star Julian Marley. It is nice that there are some nice free events that people can go to and have a good time. Afterwards, on my way back I let a street performer by Greektown Casino juggle knives over my head fulfilling a life long dream of show biz aspirations.

I hope everyone has a good week and look for me at the following events – 7/31 Neil Diamond @ Palace Of Auburn Hills, 8/1 Rancid @ Clutch Cargos, 8/2 Hippifest @ Pine KnobJand the wonderful Sunday show at Freedom Hill featuring Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell (last weeks Doo Wop show with the Tokens and Lou Christie, got me excited about this one). Later.Wild Bill does a radio show on Mon & Thurs mornings 8-10AM on WXOU 88.3FM or http://www.wxou.org/ and he can be seen on myspace.com/wildatheart_13.

Wild At Heart

This post was meant be dropped by Blogger's autopost that doesnt work - SAGINAWSOME!

Wild At Heart
What a wonderfully busy weekend, esp for folk music fans in Detroit this past weekend. Besides Crosby, Stills & Nash at Meadowbrook, we had Buffy Saint-Marie, Ricki Lee Jones and Michelle Shocked at the Concert Of Colors. CSN actually sounded wonderful despite my being worried about Crosby's voice. I have heard too many people say they have been disappointed in their shows due to his dependency on drugs (esp in the 80's when Crosby got busted and sent to jail). One of my buddies saw them years ago and told me Crosby kept disappearing backstage leaving Stills and Nash wondering if he would come back out. However, I must say they sounded good and the rain in the air couldn't keep the crowd from getting excited for songs such as "Teach Your Children" and "Southern Cross".

Speaking of sounding good, Thursday and the Max E Fisher for the opening day was highlighted by a performance of the Detroit Symphony and native american folksinger/educator Buffy Saint-Marie, who is looking very spry for her age. Her biggest hit was actually sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes ("Up Where We Belong" from the film 'An Officer And A Gentleman'), but I loved the version which she played at the concert which will forever make the Cocker/Warnes version pale in comparison. I really enjoyed the way she incorporates Native American chants and instrumentation into her songs which make for a very special show. Along with her very controversal song "Universial Soldier", she also did songs like "He's An Indian Cowboy in the Rodeo" and "The Big Ones Get Away" and in my opinion, was the highlight of the festival. My radio station, WXOU 88.3FM (http://www.wxou.org/) was present on Sat and Sun and I would like to thank everyone for showing up and giving support to the mavericks of college radio. I would also like to thank the staff of the Concert of Colors (esp the second floor crew which watched my booth when I would walk around) and my new friends at the other cool Detroit area station - WHFR 89.7 - which even had me on for a few minutes prior to the Terrance Simien set. Simien is a grammy award winning zydeco musician who has been an ambassador for zydeco music. He has worked to get zydeco it's own Grammy category (which he won in it's first year) as well as working numerous education programs letting kids learn about the zydeco heritage. He also was the first zydeco musician to play in Cuba and Mauritius (which has the biggest native Creole population) as part of cultural exchange programs.I also got to meet Don Was (esp after our hour and fifteen minute interview on last Thurs), Mitch Ryder, Wayne Krammer, John Sinclair, Michelle Shocked (again) and got some drops from Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals.

That really made it a great experience and all the performers were great though Toots had some microphone issues for the first 20 minutes of his set but they ended strong. One of the strengths of the festival is musical diversity and next to Buffy, I was really impressed by Sudan United For Peace which was a jam session of numerous African musicians such as singer Abdel Gadir Salim, vocalist Abu Araki and the Al Balabil Sisters. It is just special to hear quality international music in a great venue with a crowd that just gets it.Also, I met my nemesis Bam who was stationed at the table across from me. Besides trying to set the building on fire, he kept giving me the evil eye the whole time I was there. However, by the last day we did make peace and get our picture taken together at the photo booth.

For those who were there, Bam was the squirrel at the nuts vendor. I'm hoping my photographer friend is going to put the picture on the site to see us.

Besides the serenity of the Concert of Colors, I also spent Friday morning at the Warped Tour. I wasn't overly excited by the line up this year but heck, I was getting in for free. The one band I will recommend was Oreskaband, an all female Japanese ska band which rocked the Hurley stage early in the morning and if I had paid to get in, they would have made it all worth it by themselves (I willbe playing the on my Thursday show - 8-10AM on http://www.wxou.org/).

I also enjoyed the Horrorpops and the Aggrolites which both had ska backgrounds. The odd girl out was Katy Perry which despite being indie, just seemed out of place surrounded by bands like Chiodos and Pennywise. I was only able to catch a couple of songs because I had to work the Boris show afterwards. After warped, I really wasn't ready for the opening bands (which included Torche) since my head was pounding, but Boris' experimental Japanese rock (started in the hardcore punk scene) was excellent.

They are more similar to bands like current Blue Cheer or old Motorhead, so if you like that, try out Boris. Like the Watson Twins, Boris also records their albums on analog.I will be having Dan McCowan on my show Thursday morning talking about his new movie "The Tower" which will be showing at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak on July 23rd at 8PM. The cost is only $5 and you can read more about it on http://www.thetowermovie.com/.

Part of the film was shot at the Eagle Theatre in downtown Pontiac. Come out and support the local film scene before the movie hits the festival circuit.I hope to see some of you at the Cavalera Conspiracy show at Clutch Cargo's tomorrow and I will be seeing 2 movie previews tomorrow afternoon - Tropic Thunder & Henry Poole Is Here - which I will be talking about in my next column. I will be interviewing Brandon T Jackson, a local Detroiter who appeared in Tropic Thunder which I will be airing that on my July 28th show.

Check out my myspace page http://www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 for more stuff coming up.

A quick pet peeve. I noticed at Warped Tour and the Concert of Colors that some people working the booths looking half dead when they are at these events promoting their station, newspaper or whatever. At the Concert of Colors, I was constantly talking to people while some other tables saw their people leave early because no one was talking to them. If you are working a table at an event, you need to be willing to be a little animated so people think you are worth talking to and learning about what you have to promote. Such a simple concept. I had one girl at the Warped Tour sitting me for a whole hour without smiling once. WOW. Lighten up girlfriend!

PHOTOS: Don Was recording session at Rustbelt Studios by Amy Palomar

I was fortunate enough to be at Rustbelt Studios this past Thursday (7/17/08) and meet Don Was, David Was and the musicians who make up Sudan United for Peace. The Sudanese artists joined native Detroiter and Grammy Award winner Don Was, another Concert of Colors artist, to collaborate on a song calling for peace in Sudan.

I was struck by how powerful the session was. I knew it was an honor to meet Don Was, David Was and the most talented musicians from Sudan, I didn't realize how moving it would be. At a time when the President of Sudan is being charged with war crimes by The Hague I was being sung to about peace and one love. We have so much to learn for one another.

Sudan United for Peace performs from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, on the Chrysler Main Stage at Orchestra Hall. I urge you to come down to the Concert of Colors and find some peace.

The recording session was conceived and planned by Concert of Colors founder Ismael Ahmed; Ralph Valdez, curator of cultural programming at the Arab American National Museum, a festival presenter; Don Was; and Dawn Elder, who is managing the Sudanese tour. It is being underwritten in part by the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn. All are available for interview, as is a spokesman for the Sudanese performers.

Don Was hosts a Detroit Super Session from 7:15-8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, also on the Chrysler Main Stage at Orchestra Hall, featuring David Was, Luis Resto, Randy Jacobs, Terry Thunder, Mitch Ryder, the MC5's Wayne Kramer, John Sinclair and members of Detroit bands including the Dirtbombs, Black Bottom Collective, Sisters Lucas, Lola Morales and Detroit Cobras.

THE PEOPLE'S ARTS FESTIVAL NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINES
"At the Russell" September 13, 2008

The People's Arts Festival (PAF), sponsored by The Russell Center for Creative Arts (RCCAdetroit.org), has announced a new deadline for submissions to the festival, August 1st, 2008, and is still taking applications for participants.

All interested participants should respond by e-mail to the specific addresses listed below. The PAF will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. - midnight at the Russell Industrial Center at 1600 Clay Avenue off I-75.

Admission to the festival is free to the public. Now in it's second year, the Annual People's Arts Festival (PAF) is the largest assembly of artists, performance artists, musicians and filmmakers in the city of Detroit. Last year, the free-to-artists festival drew over 4,000 people who visited more than 200 exhibitors and musicians to celebrate the inaugural launch of the festival. This year Festival planners expect that crowd to double - once again securing its claim to being the largest arts festival in the City of Detroit

The People's Arts Festival is unique in several ways. A music merchandising area will once again be set up for all participating bands with all sales being retained by the performers. Exhibit space, public lighting, sound systems, stages and security are all being provided at no cost to participants by the Russell Center for Creative Arts, a not-for-profit group established this year to administer the PAF and other artistic projects at the Russell Industrial Center (RICdetroit.org)"We hope to accomplish several things through our sponsorship of the Festival," said Dennis Kefallinos, the owner of Russell Industrial Center and an RCCA board member. "Once again, it's part of our way of saying, 'Thank You' to the artists and other creative people who have chosen to locate their studios and businesses with us. Last year's festival brought the Russell family even more closely together and has resulted in the launch of dozens of creative projects - some involving individual tenants, groups of tenants or the community as a whole.Supporting the festival is also a way of giving something back to Detroit and proving that there's still a lot of positive energy in this city.

Finally, it's another opportunity for us to showcase this unbelievable campus. We have seven buildings here and over 2.2 million square feet, so there's still plenty of room for people who are interested in joining our community.""To me the most exciting thing about this festival is still that it has been planned by artists, it's essentially free to artists and that the guidelines we established … have been honored by The Russell management," said Mark Arminski, a globally-renowned painter and poster maker and one of the three members of the Festival's Artist's Committee. "The whole feel of the festival last year was dramatic. … this year promises to be even more exciting. We've also been fortunate once again to secure the sponsorship of Real Detroit magazine which last year did a spectacular job of moving the festival forward. And, you really can't say enough about the artists and other members of the Russell Family who have generously contributed so much time and talent to the planning and ongoing organization of this event."

The only charge to artists is a $25 community participation fee which covers incidental costs associated with security, general area cleanup, etc. No commissions will be taken; artists keep all sales profits. Applications and information on the festival may be found at http://www.rccadetroit.org/

"Take Back Tuesday" - NOIR LEATHER 25th Anniversary Events - Every Tuesday

Noir Leather “Takes Back Tuesday”
Celebrating 25 Years in Business

ROYAL OAK – Noir Leather, an independent clothing, leather and fetish store, located at 124 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak, MI 48067, celebrates its 25th year in business, by welcoming the punks back to Royal Oak and spice up Tuesday nights with“Take Back Tuesdays.”

Each Tuesday night from June 10th through the end of August, entertainers will perform outside of Noir Leather reminiscent of a tradition started by punk kids hanging out on the corners of Fourth and Main in the 90’s.

Upcoming Performances:
7/15 Skin and Bones Band
7/22 Satori Circus
7/29 The Motor City Rah Rah’s (Roller Derby Cheerleaders)

The History of Noir
Owned and operated by Keith Howarth since December of 1981, Noir Leather has had a front row seat and a hand in the birth of this urban-chic suburb.
Beginning as a wholesale leather company, Noir expanded in 1983 to a storefront in downtown Royal Oak at 117 W. Third St. After three years of having to close Noir at 5 p.m. due to a lack of foot traffic, Howarth collaborated with a handful of local businesses to entice people to visit downtown later in the evening.

The night was set - Every Wednesday restaurants and stores would stay open until 11p.m. The campaign was a massive successand has grown with the city over the past 20 years, becoming infamous in the metro Detroit area.

Over Noir’s 25 years in business, Howarth has had his fair share of opposition from citizens, city council, the Royal Oak Police Department and animal rights activists. Howarth contributes his longevity as landmark business, not only Royal Oak but also in the metro Detroit area, to his drive to succeed over opposition.

“I’ve watched [Royal Oak] prosper from a ghost town to the little Chicago it is now and Noir has been a part of that journey. Noir shocked a lot of people at first (because of the scene we are a part of), but we haven’t changed, we haven’t gone anywhere and we haven’t let any road bumps stop us from doing what we love to do,” said Howarth.

Wild at Heart - Friday July 18th 2008

Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

It has been a star-studded week so far so me as I have had the opportunity
to interview some cool people for my show. I started off the week with Rainn
Wilson on a round table discussion talking about his upcoming film “The
Rocker”. Starting off, he was showing his inner geek by wearing a Star Trek
shirt from the animated series.

I am not sure if he was joking, but he did ask me if I would come on “The
Office” and play his cousin. This could work since we are about the same age
and are both inner geeks and proud of it. What do you people think?
Talking about “The Office”, he was tightlipped about the upcoming season but
mentioned that the cast has pictures of their real families on their desks.
He is also proud of his first leading role with “The Rocker” which will now
be out in August. Visit the WXOU at the Concert Of Colors on Sat and we will
have some passes for the movie next Monday at AMC Southfield. I highly
recommend it and have a review on my website at

http://www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 so check it out.

One of his highlights was meeting ex-Beatle drummer Pete Best and related how he thought it was funny that Pete came in one day for a shoot which got cut from the film. No
respect after all these years. Pete expressed to Rainn how lucky he feels to
have his health and kids and likes that he still receives nice checks from
the early Beatle recording which will keep him set for the rest of his life.
Besides the industry, Rainn does have a website www.rrwilsonart.com which he shares with his father and they sell fine art. He asks to talk to them about art but no autograph requests please. Rainn also does a lot of work supporting education through the Mona Foundation
which he feels is very important though he might have some questions for his
music teacher who got him to take up bassoon for 5 years, though his musical
background (including clarinet and xylophone) did come in handy for his role
in “the Rocker”.

Remember, the Concert Of Colors is this weekend starting Thursday with Buffy
Saint-Marie and continuing through Sunday with such artists as Rickie Lee
Jones, Mavis Staples and Don Was.

I had Don on my show this morning and we talked about the show Sunday which will feature a number of local musicians such as Mitch Ryder, John Sinclair along with members of the Dirtbombs, Black Merde and the Detroit Cobras. Basically it will be a jam session with
every artist doing one song on a rotational basis. This should be a lot of
fun and should not be missed. We talked about 1 hour and 15 minutes which
made him a little late for a recording session for Amnesty International
with the Sudan United For Peace musicians which should be stellar. We
covered his extensive career (producing albums for Bonnie Raitt, Roy
Orbison, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Al Green, B-52’s, etc) where we learned
we share the idea that if you just make a great album, people will
respond to it. Recording artists just need to keep their own inner voice
true to the music and they won’t get off target. He said, he has trouble
producing hit songs (Love Shack being a true surprise due to it being
radically different from anything on the market) but making a good album is
possible as long as the artist has a true vision.

Despite being a big star, he admits he has had moments of being starstruck, esp the first time he
worked with Johnny Cash. It was a great interview, so for those who heard it, I thank you for listening. PS - WXOU will have a table at the event on Sat and Sun from 1-8PM so make sure to stop by.

Lastly, “Weird Al” Yankovic called in for a conversation which we found out
his new album comes out Tuesday (no particular Tuesday, but some Tuesday),
that Harvey the Wonder Hamster doesn’t return his calls anymore and that he
will performing a good selection of older hits along with material from
Straight Out Of Linwood at his show at Meadowbrook tomorrow (for those not
at the Concert of Colors or Warped Tour). I was always a huge “Weird Al” fan
growing up and it was great to be able to do this interview.

I also had a good time at the Missy Higgins show at the Crofoot. Missy has a
beautifully powerful voice, and while I didn’t get the opportunity to
interview her, I was happy to have seen her performance and wish her luck
breaking into the US market since she is a superstar in Australia. I did
however get the chance to talk to Chandra of the Watson Twins and will play
that brief interview on Monday, 21st at 9AM on wxou.org so you can hear
about how they got their start and if they worried about being over shadowed
by Jenny Lewis on their album together.

Also, if you would like tickets for the Cavalera Conspiracy show at Clutch
Cargo on July 22nd with Bury Your Dead and Dillenger Escape Plan, send me an
email at doramu13@yahoo.com and we’ll see what we can work out. Just tell me
something cool about the city of Detroit to look into for future blogs.
Also, if you want to be in a short student Zombie film (one or two days
work) with no pay, call Ted at 586-212-3225 or email Kurt with the header
‘Zombie Extra’ at squire132000@yahoo.com.

Enjoy the weekend. And welcome back to Detroit Emily Rose after your trip around the county spreading the music of Detroit.
