Local Oscar & Grammy Award winning songwriter and keyboardist Luis Resto (background below) is currently touring as part of Eminem's band. The European leg's been completed and they've now returned to the States with stadium dates set for Detroit and New York.

On the eve of the two Detroit concerts, this Wednesday, September 1, Luis and his band will be performing a special pre-Comerica set at the Majestic Cafe, 4120 Woodward in Detroit. Doors open at 9 PM, tickets are $7.

This show will commemorate the CD release of his solo debut, Combo De Momento, previously available only on vinyl and from online services. Discs will be available at the show and there will be special surprise guests.

This will be one of the last Detroit performances of the year as Luis moves decidedly into the national arena.

THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

• Luis was an original member of the groundbreaking avante-funk Was (Not Was) band and has played keyboards on virtually every one of their albums (reference tracks: "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming", "Out Come The Freaks", "Somewhere In America", "Anything Can Happen", "You! You! You!")

• has performed, written & recorded with Patti Smith (reference: "Don't Smoke In Bed", "My Madrigal" and "Pastime Paradise"); backed Ms. Smith in her American Songbook performance at Lincoln Center (March 2008) and the Bowery Ballroom concerts in New York (April 2007) commemorating the release of Smith’s Twelve album.

• won an Oscar and a Grammy as co-writer of "Lose Yourself", Eminem's smash worldwide hit and the most successful single of his career, spending 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 & is now widely regarded as one of the most important songs of the decade.

• co-wrote the title track and six other songs on the 8 Mile soundtrack album (released on October 29 in advance of the film) which quickly became the fifth best-selling album of 2002 with US sales of 3.2 million in it’s first two months of release.

• a veteran and in-demand musician, Luis has recorded with Stevie Nicks, Iggy Pop, Jay Z, Mel Torme, Anita Baker, the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson) and many others.

• one of the most creative and diversely accomplished musicians currently working in Detroit, Luis has amassed a voluminous list of credits with relatively little fanfare; as part of Eminem's Shady camp, he played/produced/written songs for some twenty-five Top 5 album releases in the first decade of this new century, some fifteen of which reached the coveted Number 1 position.

• most recently Luis has been credited for co-writing Eminem's smash "Not Afraid" and Lil' Wayne's platinum single "Drop the World".

Michigan Arts & Apples Festival - Sept 10 & 12

Just as you wiped the sweat from your brow and kicked on the A/C for another record temp weekend - you may have realized that it is already the end of August.. Where has summer gone? Luckily, Fall = FUN in the Motor City and there is a ton planned, especially in September. One of my favorites is the Annual Art & Apples Festival.

The Art & Apples Festival is held annually on the weekend following Labor Day in the scenic 30-acre Rochester Park, located in Downtown Rochester. The festival is Michigan’s second largest juried fine arts festival and is part of Sunshine Artist Magazine’s TOP 35 festivals in the nation and includes over 250 fine art exhibitors, a variety of food, live entertainment and free kids art activities. When I checked my inbox this morning there was a link to a Starship cover by local band Gardens. I rolled my eyes at first (to the fact that it was a cover of Starship) and then figured why not while clicking through. It was not what I was dreading at all. Here's a soundcloud of the song:
Nothing Gon Stop Us by Gardens Detroit

I purchased their first 45 that was put out via the UFO Factory and Italy Records.

The songs on "In Novelty Land" are quite contrasted to the above Starship cover. They are more straight ahead lo-fi garage rock with a bit of a pop swagger. "Nothing Gon Stop Us" rings back to the old Genders sound and reminds me of alot of the Bam/Little Claw/Mountains & Rainbows stuff that was being churned out by the now defunct Muddy Mitten Label. The 45 is good and I'm looking forward to see what direction they take with the new EP they are getting together. If you get a chance pick up a copy of "In Novelty Land" and check Gardens Myspace for updated shows and tour information.

Wild At Heart

As everyone now knows, I will be leaving Detroit on October 2nd to go back to Rochester, NY to help take care of my parents. It’s not my overwhelming desire to do this but it is the right thing to do considering the circumstances. I have been trying to get out and do some fun stuff before I leave which includes going out to new restaurants. Last week, I found myself at the Tokyo Buffet Lounge (tokyojapanesebuffet.com) located next to the AMC Theatre on 12 Mile Rd in Southfield which has a really nice buffet set up with a nice variety of sushi (second only to the Fuji Buffet), soups, various shrimp dishes, salad bar and ice cream bar. This might be the second best Chinese themed buffet in the area and it’s too bad I found it now before I am leaving town. For pizza buffets lovers, I tried American Pie in Warren which has a cool atmosphere for the pop culture fan. While the pizza is no better than Cici’s, I did like their salad bar better and they put out some baked potatoes with all the fixings which were very good. I also liked their bedsticks quite a bit which made the overall buffet better than most of the area competition. I only wish the actual pizza was better but it is just average. For something more upscale, you can try the Sunday Brunch at Lelli’s in Auburn Hills. At $20, it is a bit pricey, but they got some nice salads, plenty of fruit (which is always nice for digestion) and good chocolate chip cookies. They had some breakfast items like bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs but they had a very good stuffed salmon, a decent chicken dish, average scalloped potatoes and a perfectly cooked prime rib which melted in my mouth. Maybe it’s not something you’ll do every weekend, but should hit the spot every once in awhile. I’m told there dinners are very good. I hope this made you at least a bit hungry and I’m looking to try out a few more places in which I’ll talk about the best here.

There are not many stand out concerts for me this week expect for Saturday though we do have 2 big festivals with some great local and regional bands.

Tuesday 3/31 – Aerosmith and Sammy Hagar @ Palace Of Auburn Hills

Wednesday 9/01 – Luis Resto (keyboardist for was (Not Was)) @ Majestic Cafe

Friday 9/03 – Heart @ Pine Knob

Saturday 9/04 – Semi Precious Weapons opens for Lady Gaga @ Palace Of Auburn Hills, local favs Amino Acids and 10 other local bands play Hell City Records event @ Magic Stick, Zoos Of Berlin @ Pike Room, Billy Idol and Slash @ Soaring Eagle Casino, Rare Earth @ Smackwater Block at Lexington Music Theatre Company

Sunday 9/05 – Ted Nugent @ Pine Knob

Monday 9/06 – Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels @ Downtown Hamtramck

Along with the concerts listed above, there are two major festivals going on in the area that have some wonderful music this weekend. The recently relocated Arts, Beats and Eats which will be sorely missed in Pontiac is now in Royal Oak which means I am praying that parking in the area is going to be not too much of a problem. They have a lot of events and amusement for the little kids as well as free “Ride and Drives” of the new Ford’s for the bigger ones. Of course, there is all the art and food vendors, but I go for the music and they have a lot of good bands over the 4 days. Friday sees headliners Saving Abel, Candlebox and Sponge along with local bands Prussia, Silverghost, Howling Diablos, Annie Capp, Mydols, Robin Horlock Band, Laith Al-Saadi, Thornetta Davis, Broken Arrow Blues Band and the Swamp Sisters. Saturday continues with the Rhythm Corps and Mayer Hawthorne with local support by the Hard Lessons, Twistin’ Tarantulas, Duende!, Jessica Hernandez, October Babies (my favorite local band), the Muggs and Nadir Distorted Soul. Sunday has Stewart Francke, War and Macy Gray with local bands like the Blueflowers, Roots Vibration Band and Dirty Americans. Things end Monday with Kansas and Clint Black with back-ups Misty Lyn and the Big Beautiful, Orbitsuns, Amp Fiddler and the Jill Jack Band. Of course, there are many other bands on the line ups but these are my personal favorites and highlight the wonderful musical diversity we have in Detroit. I’m going to miss this when I move to New York because the scene there is nowhere near as diverse and exciting as it is here.

The other major event this weekend is the Detroit International Jazzfest which once again has some major talent coming through. My recommendations start with the talented Tower Of Power on Friday night. On Saturday, I’m looking at the Hot Club Of Detroit, the rockin’ Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Yellowjackets. I’m not familiar with Sunday’s line-up but Monday has the wonderful Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Manhattan Transfer, Nadir and Brubeck Institute Jazz Quartet. Always one of the best festivals in Detroit year-in, year-out and one that shouldn’t be missed.

Enjoy the weekend and make sure to get out and enjoy this nearly perfect weather we are having.

PHOTOS & REVIEW: Xavier Rudd & Izintaba - ROMT by Andrew Bender

Last Saturday night, Australian multi-instrumentalist and recording artist Xavier Rudd made his debut performance at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, and MCB’s Andrew Bender was on the scene. Read on for Drew’s take on the evening, photos, and videos from the show.

I rolled into Royal Oak shortly after 9pm, hoping to get there in time to catch the last few songs by opening act Good Old War – a band I’d neither seen nor heard of before. After collecting photo and video credentials from the box office for myself and my assistant/videographer/wife, we made our way into the theater where the opener was over halfway through their 45 minute set. Although I was only able to take in their last three songs, the Pennsylvania trio managed to impress both me and the crowd pressing against the rail. GOW combines indie-rock overtones with folk arrangements and three-part vocal harmonies, reminiscent of some early Avett Brothers numbers. I’ll definitely be making an effort to see these guys again the next time they roll through town.

Following a short break, headliner Xavier Rudd took the stage, accompanied by his new rhythm section, dubbed Izintaba. From the Zulu word for mountain, Izintaba comprises South Africans Tio Moloantoa on bass and percussionist Andile Nqubezelo. Opening with his song Mother off the 2005 album Food In The Belly, Rudd and company brought driving rhythms and the Australian’s masterfully haunting didgeridoo playing once again to the welcoming ears of the Michiganders on hand that night. I’d seen Xavier Rudd play around town on two previous occasions, both at St. Andrew’s Hall in downtown Detroit. The first time, XR was all solo – just him surrounded by a circle of didgeridoos, pedals for kick drum and effects, high hat, hand drums, and an Australian-made, hollow-necked Weissenborn slide-guitar. Seeing all of that sound come from one man – without even a looper – was mind boggling. The second time Rudd was occasionally accompanied by a kit drummer, although the effect was no less impressive.

(CONTINUED BELOW PHOTO SLIDESHOW)

This time, however, was something of a different beast altogether. It was my first time seeing XR in a band and not just as a solo musician who is occasionally accompanied. Touring in support of their album Koonyum Sun, released last April, Xavier Rudd and Izintaba managed to transform Rudd’s earlier work into a newer spirit, more in line with the arrangements off the new album. Although this meant that some songs had more intense, complicated percussion and rhythm arrangements, others had a simpler, folk music quality that incorporated aboriginal vocal and percussion elements . Although there were plenty of numbers that had the few hundred folks in the room dancin and shakin, others were far more gentle, almost contemplative numbers. This was hardly surprising given the ever-growing emphasis that Xavier Rudd seems to place on his spirituality in his song writing. However, in comparison to the insanely coordinated, intense, and more hard-driving songs and performances of prior years, Saturday night left me wanting just a bit less of the folk songs and more infectious grooves accompanied by jaw-dropping musicianship. Which is not to say that Rudd, Moloantoa or Nqubezelo gave anything but stellar performances – just that I was hoping to have more danceable tunes than were on the set. Simply put, all three musicians were great to watch as Moloantoa alternated between 4- and 6-string electric bass guitars and Nqubezelo moved from drum kit to various hand drums. Althoguh Rudd’s vocals were as strong as ever, his increasing popularity was apparent from the amount of sing-along vocals he inspired in the crowd. Although the ROMT was a bigger room than St. Andrews and the concentration of crowd energy was diluted in the room at less-than-half capacity, the mix of young-to-middle-aged suburbanites seemed to only appreciate more space to dance and enjoy the show.

UPCOMING: Ron Zakrin's A Cluster Fuck - 323East Sept 10th

RON ZAKRIN
IS BRINGING
A Cluster F*ck
TO 323EAST SEPT. 10

Detroit’s ever present creative force, artist Ron Zakrin, will present his solo exhibition entitled Cluster " F*ck" at the 323East Gallery in Royal Oak on Friday, September 10. Free and open to the general public, the artist exhibition starts at 6 p.m. and runs through 11 p.m. that evening. Free refreshments will be available.

To commemorate the exhibition opening, 323East will give away free Giclèe prints of “The Last Stand” that have been signed and numbered by Zakrin to the first 30 people that attend the show and request one. A Giclée is a fancy art word for archival limited edition print (Picture of Giclée print attached along with picture of art that will be on display)

Zakrin said the name of the exhibition alludes to the focal point of the show. “It’s a cluster of work that spreads away from a central focal point in concentric waves,” he said. “Each piece of work is both a stand alone, self contained unit with its own story, while simultaneously belonging to a much larger orchestration of paintings, drawings, and assemblages.”

Prominent themes gallery visitors will experience in his works of art include:
• The demise of wholesome goodness, in general,
• Ethics in genetic art,
• Heartache and other pass times, and
• Mythology in the 21st century.

“We are extremely excited to have Ron back at 323East for his second solo exhibition,” said Cory. “His shows have a strong group of followers, and have become very popular with those that visit the gallery regularly. Detroit art enthusiast and collectors are always interested to see Ron’s latest work. It’s going to be a great exhibition.”

Last Wednesday night MCB's Andrew Bender made it out to the Royal Oak Music Theater for another performance by white boy blues-jam rockers Gov't Mule. Check out his photos and thoughts below:

I wandered in to the Royal Oak Music Theater with a little bit of time to spare before opening act Jackie Greene took the stage. Already I could tell it would be quite the sausage fest as the male to female ratio was easily pushing 5 to 1. As I made my way through the ROMT lobby I was assaulted by queasy odors that could only have had ass as their origin. Dudes, seriously - just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Shooting the first few songs of San Francisco wunderkind Jackie Greene, who had also opened for Gov't Mule in their previous stop at the ROMT last October, I marveled at his talent. Having played lead guitar and taken vocal duties in Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh's band, Greene played several strong originals and a couple of Dead covers including New Speedway Boogie and Mama Tried. Greene's powerful vocals and wide range were matched by his casual charisma and dexterous electric guitar playing. Following the one hour opening set and a brief break, Gov't Mule took the stage for two sets of rockin regulars and bust outs. (continued below photos)

Gov't Mule

Jackie Greene

Gov't Mule lead guitarist and singer Warren Haynes (whose touring wardrobe consists primarily of identical short-sleeved navy button-up shirts), drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, and keyboard player and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis rocked the ROMT, opening with Blind Man in the Dark. Inside Outside Woman Blues and Need Your Love So Bad had the audience moving as the occasional smell of farts and weed drifted among the crowd. The set closer of Thorazine Shuffle had the four musicians passing the solo around as Abts beat the hell out of his cowbell while Haynes and Carlsson both adopted tortured 'guitar face' in the intensity of the jam.

Opening their second set with one of my all-time favorite songs - Pink Floyd's 'One of These Days' off of their album Meddle just rocked the shit out of the ROMT and that was a great sign of things to come in the second set. The band transitioned Days into Since I've Been Loving You which morphed into No Quarter before transitioning yet again into Led Zeppelin's Moby Dick with powerful drumming that kept powering through until everyone else broke away leaving the stage for Abts to just go nuts for a while until they regrouped and jammed back into Moby Dick. This was followed by another sandwich of About to Rage > Electric Funeral Jam > About to Rage that had huge swaths of the audience, including me, dancing up a storm. The set closer of Mr. High and Mighty brought the house down. Even though the ROMT was far from sold out for the show, the series of bust outs and covers was a treat for all the die hards in the crowd and a great initiation for the Mule neophytes. The two-song encore of Long as I Can See the Light and After Midnight with Jackie Greene sitting in were just great icing on the cake - particularly when Haynes and Greene took turns on vocals and lead guitar duties. Overall, a night of great musicianship, hot music, and a little bit of (unwelcome) hot air.

Autolux. Fucking Awesome Fest. Magic Stick. 8-22-2010.

Hanson. Royal Oak Music Theater. 8/17/2010.

ROMT was filled with screaming 20-something year old ladies reliving their teenage days all in the name of the brothers Hanson. I was told by a fan that she had seen Hanson with her friends ELEVEN TIMES in the past 10+ years, I was then told by a fan that she was going to knock me down while her friend stole my photo pass and to top it off another fan was talking about vomiting on me because I was obstructing her view of the trio. It was an interesting evening. But, kudos to the Hanson guys for playing real instruments and being able to carry a tune, they've come a long way since the Mmmmm....Bop days.

In ancient Greece, the Agora was an open "place of assembly" where free-born male land-owners who were citizens would gather for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later, the Agora also served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods. In 2009, it is the name of a movie by director Alejandro Amenabar (“The Sea Inside” and “Open Your Eyes”) and stars the lovely Rachel Weisz as Hypatia, a female mathematician, philosopher and astronomer in 4th century AD Alexandria. Hypatia, like our image of all pure scientists, investigates the flaws of the geocentric Ptolemaic system (placing Earth at the center of the universe and the stars and planets revolve in circular orbits around us) and the heliocentric model (the sun is the center of the universe and the planets revolve around it) while generally staying away from the deeper issues of religious turmoil and social unrest that are tearing the city apart as the Christians are taking over from the Romans and Jews in brutal fashion. The film is not truly about the evils that Christians perpetuate but seemingly about religious fundamentalism in general. Hypatia is seen as a bright intelligent woman who is seen by the Christians as evil for her beliefs, though more likely for the esteem the prefect of Alexandria holds for her opinions, and they persecute her soon after she breaks the problem of the solar system. The movie does a good job on looking at the relationship between religion and science among the Christianization of the Roman empire though it feels more like a big TV movie. Weisz pulls forth a wonderful performance which truly makes the film though we wish we could see a bit more characterization among the other characters who seem more like ciphers than true characters at times. Still, if you love stuff like “I, Claudius”, this film should fit the bill for a nice night out at the cinema. My grade is a B-. I would also like to apologize for the lateness of this review since the film is ending on the 26th so please hurry if you would like to take in the splendor of the film on the big screen.

Wild At Heart

Well, I'm officially back in Detroit until the first weekend of October. My mom is starting to feel better but changes in her medication are making her feel a bit under the weather still. I'm starting to put things in order for my move back to NY. I had always hoped my parents health would stay high and that with all the resumes I have put in over the past year and a half would lead to something more than parttime work. I have always wondered which would falter first, my savings or my parents health, and it turns out the later. As much as I would love to stay here with all the wonderful things that this area has to offer, my parents are still my number one priority which I hope you all understand. I am planning a bunch of concerts and one nice road trip up north to Mackinaw Island to see the Grand Hotel (always was a fan of the movie "Somewhere In Time") and the famous bridge I keep hearing about. Over the next month, I am planning on doing some best off type lists. Not sure how they will add up but will encompass the things I have loved about living here in the Detroit area. Still looking for ideas from my readers on restaurants to try out or things to see in the area before I move. You can send any ideas to doramu13@yahoo.com and I will look into putting them into action.

Before I went home a couple of weeks ago, I was in Ann Arbor for a Natalie Merchant show and made sure I got in town early so I could take in the updated Kelsey Museum on the campus of the University Of Michigan which is known for it's famous collections. From the outside it didn't look like much but once inside, the place was more expansive than it appears as it displays about four times as much than it's previous space. Most of the displays focus on specific past Kelsey fieldwork projects or Museum initiatives from the Universities collections as well as objects borrowed from museums around the world. Among the displays are a colorfully painted Egyptian mummy coffin, magical amulets from the ancient Near East, an array of glass vessels, Greek pottery, Roman sculptures and a unique large-scale watercolor representation of the famous Villa of the Mysteries murals from ancient Pompeii. The multi-level addition is easy to go through with plenty of informational signs along the way. If you are a fan of early civilizations, this is a very nice exhibit heads and tails above any other museum in the area. For more information, go to http://www.lsa.umich.edu/kelsey/visitorinformation.

This week starts a little slow for concerts but picks up as we hit Thursday, so here are my picks if you are looking for a good show to attend.

Sunday 8/29 = electronic music with Stereo Total @ Magic Stick (the lead singer sings in 6 languages including Turkish and Japanese)

I am going home now to watch Agora which I'll try to post online tomorrow. Have a good week and look forward to some email suggestions about what to see and do in the area. Have a good week andI'll leave you with a video by Stereo Total.

Norway's Casiokids will be heading to Magic Stick on August 26th
with Light Pollution in support of their US debut Topp stemning på lokal bar (Polyvinyl).
Recently hitting #29 on the CMJ Top 200 charts, Topp stemning på lokal bar features the incredibly catchy dance-floor single, "Fot i hose" (Fits like a glove), as well as "Finn bikkjen!" (Find the dog!).Discovered by former tour mates (and now labelmates) of Montreal, Casiokids put on a theatrical live show -- incorporating a blend of shadow puppets, video projections and animal costumes -- that is not to be missed.
Whether playing for the truly young (as during a 12-date kindergarten tour in Norway) or the young at heart (at almost all of Europe's largest festivals and on tour with Hot Chip), Casiokids generate the kind of unrestrained party mood that inevitably transforms any audience into a joyous, dancing mass.

PHOTOS: The Black Crowes live at The Fillmore Detroit by Dan Sultana

The Black Crowes made a stop at the Filmore in Detroit August 21, 2010 They lit insense, draped American flags with Peace signs around the stage and covered the stage floor with tapestry rugs, a fun relaxed Hippy setting. As the patchouli scent wafted through the air Chris Robinson settled in and performed acoustic renditions of 'Cold Boy Smile," "Jealous Again," "Welcome to the goodtimes," and "She talks to Angels" before firing up the rest of the band to the crowds delite ! Chris Robinson mentioned that The Black Crowes plan on taking a long break after this tour finishes up. Let's hope they decide to cut a new record and tour sometime in the near future. Only time will tell......and it may be a very long time.

HAFLIFE cd release show was AWESOME.
If you're a fan of industrial you need to add this "BOOTYCORE" cd to your collection. Not only will you be getting great music, you're be supporting our local music.
I feel that we as Detroiter's are spoiled. We've had great music coming out of our area for a loooong time. Motown, Electronic, The resurgence of garage bands, all started here. With all that history, we tend to forget the bands that stay because they want too. They love it here. We should return that love.

HAFLIFE is one of those bands.
Show your love and get their new cd.

PHOTOS: Slayer & Megadeth by Dan Sultana

Slayer had to cancel the Detroit stop earlier this year because of Tom Araya's back surgery. Araya is known for his aggressive style of headbanging and thrashing while performing. The Carnage tour returned to the Motor City on August 19. Bringing their Speed Metal Head banging show to Joe Louis arena. The raucous fans were worked into a frenzy of body slamming Carnage while Slayer belted out "Season's in the Abyss" from start to finish! The Mosh Pit was intense and no one went home dissapointed that Tom Araya couldn't thrash like he used too. They were still on top of their game!

Megadeth brought a huge arsenal of weapons to the Carnage tour in Detroit. Dave Mustaine brought his custom made Jackson ESP DV8 guitar and destroyed the ears of all his followers ! Megadeth rocked the Joe Louis crowd into a Symphony of Destruction while thrashing through "Rust in Peace" from start finish. Chris Broderick totally annihilated "Hangar 18" with his feverishly fast finger work! The fans were saturated with sweat while thrashing in the mosh pit on main floor...only they were only getting warmed up for the Return of Tom Araya and Slayer !! All the heavy Metal head bangers were in Motor City Heaven !
