FREE MP3: Juliette Commagere's "OVERCOME"
Maybe you don’t know her name, but chances are you’ve heard her voice.
Los Angeles’ Juliette Commagere has lent her siren of a voice to Maynard James Keenan’s Tool side project Puscifer, the latest self-titled record from road metal baddies Avenged Sevenfold, and, of course, her own band Hello Stranger, who’ve spent the past few months opening for the Foo Fighters across America. So, yeah, Commagere is a busy girl. But after the Fighters tour, she somehow found time to whip up a record of her own. Written in the beautiful reaches of Cali – Big Sur and the Mojave are pretty beautiful – the album features contributions from Joachim Cooder, Martin Pradler, and Jaochim’s dad, some guy you maybe have heard of named Ry Cooder, who played slide on “Nature of Things,” before leaving Commagere with the below quote:
“Juliette is a young modern person writing R&B ballads like Dan Penn. Nobody’s doing that anymore. And that’s 100% true — not 10% true like all that hype bullshit out there.”

Wild At Heart - Thursday October 30th 2008
Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University
Wild At Heart
Halloween is almost here and I thought I would get a few things out before the weekend.
Halloween did not become a holiday in the United States until the 19th century, where lingering Puritan tradition restricted the observance of many holidays. The holiday came here during the time of the great migration after the potato famine in Ireland where it originated, and is known in Irish as OĂche Shamhna. Pre-Christian Celts had an autumn festival, Samhain which celebrated the end of summer. The festival is an agricultural "fire festival" or feast when the dead revisited the mortal world. Large communal bonfires would hence be lit to ward off evil spirits. Pope Gregory IV standardized the date of All Saints' Day, or All Hallows' Day, on November 1 in the name of the entire Western Church in 837. Kids there traditionally dress in costumes of various underworldly creatures and enjoy lit bonfires and fireworks.
Of course, today in America, we mostly like to dress up and party. I am looking forward to going to the annual Halloween show by ICP which should be interesting. The Crofoot will be having a special Halloween program going on with the Von Bondies and Wolfman Mac. Upstairs in the Pike Room will be the Javelins, Prussia and Wildcatting all doing tributes to their favorite bands (the Strokes, Smiths and T Rex respectfully). The Pop Project will be at the Phototropic Lounge and there will be free candy (sounds like a bribe to me). Don’t forget to dress up.
It is also the start of the Roller Derby season on Nov 1st with a Halloween themes derby between the Detroit Pistoffs and the Devil’s Night Dames. Doors at 6PM and the match starts at 7PM. These are always fun events so get your lazy butts over there and cheer on the women. The featured charity is Alternatives For Girls which helps homeless and at risk girls avoid teen pregnancy, violence and exploitation so it is a worthy cause getting out there.
Crash Baby, who now runs the Derby girls, is currently helping the prop division on the current filming of the new Rob Schneider movie being filmed around Greektown. I was down there as an extra which was fun. We got to film some outdoor party scenes with Rob of which yours truly might actually have some face time when the movie (tentatively titled American Virgin) comes out next year. It is all in the placement. I even got a set nickname which was cool. One of the set guys started calling me Blue, which might have been the color of my skin after being outdoors without a jacket all day in the cold Detroit weather. Most everyone was really nice including Rob who took some time to talk to fans and sign autographs. I met a lot of cool people (or should I saw people who were cool) though the line for the catered food line reminded me of high school through less organized. It is amazing how idiotic people can get when they don’t get their way. Kudos to the female cop who came along and organized the line. You go girl!! I plan on going back down today after my show.
On my Monday show, I will be having a talk with singer Jessica Lea Mayfield who was in town last night at the Pike Room. Tune in between 8-10AM for that and I will be giving out tickets to see Brian Wilson in Ann Arbor on the 12th. Later everyone and have a safe holiday.

DUI of EODM
Had a few in me at home and was feeling good so I decided to take the Challenger out for a drive and give it a listen....some of the best times are the "Solo Flights" out on the road and I hit the freeway by time "Live in LA" was blaring // before I knew it we were doing well over 100 as I rolled down toward the Davison...
DIETROIT always seems like a blur of broken boards and burned blackness when "I'm a Torpedo" barreling down the FWY and listening to a great record lending itself as rose colored glasses...you feel hopeful that the hardship that plagues the city will recede / smiling faces / kids playing in the street...
Figures, your out getting "Cheap Thrills " and thats when the flashing lights come up in the rear view and I'm thinking "Now I'm a fool" for doing this and I knew things were gonna get interesting from that point on....
Was wearing my heart on my sleeve as I pulled up into the pack and eased over squeezing between a rusty ol' caddy and a dirty white van but the citizen on patrol was still behind me so I punched it past the rig on the right and braked hard pulling back and off the exit with the rear barely keeping pace racing down the ramp. Thinking fast and moving fast are one in the same so I jumped back on the freeway and could see my pursuer just ahead of me probably on the radio making waves to the street to keep on the lookout...I just doubled back on the Lodge and was home free "Prissy Prancin'"

The material, which includes three new tracks along with additional video content, will be followed by a full-length release, Ursa Major, in 2009.3EB have been inspired by the possibilities and potential that new media provide, and are discovering their own paradigm on how they create and reach people with music.
They have toured consistently over the past two years, and sold out every show, playing in front of crowds of up to 11,000 fans, in response to an entirely new fan-base who have discovered this music on the web. These new fans have proved that, despite a 5-year hiatus between albums, 3EB has in fact deepened its connection with its community.

ALL SAINTS LIKE TO PARTY with The Drinking Problem - Baker's Streetcar Hamtramck - Sat Nov 1st
Saturday, November 1st 2008
All Saints Day Party in Hamtramck
w/ The Drinking Problem, Four Hour Friends and Copper Thieves
@ Bakers Streetcar
$5. 9pm doors, 10:30 music.
Baker's Streetcar is one of those Hamtramck bars that usually only hosts live music once a year for the Blowout. It's tiny, the band plays on the floor, and the walls are primed for sweat. We're looking forward to it.
The Drinking Problem is Eddie Baranek (The Sights), Dave Lawson (The Pop Project) and Jeremy Stork (Solitary States / 4 hour Friends). Korin Cox is in the band sometimes, but she's got a show in Madison that day with her "other band," the Hard Lessons.
www.myspace.com/thedrinkingproblem
The Four Hour Friends are Dale Wilson (ex-Expatriates), Steven Palmer (ex-Ghost City, Back in Spades, Fletcher Pratt), Jason Croff (Dead Bodies, Croff Family Band), Brandon White (Actionbasic), Jeremy Stork (Solitary States / Drinking Problem), and Jenna Cook (a monogamous anomaly in detroit music?).
http://www.myspace.com/thefourhourfriends
Copper Thieves are John Nelson (New Grenada), Christian Doble (Kiddo, Child Bite) and Andy Roy (ex-New Grenada).
http://www.myspace.com/copperthieves
"I drink at Bakers every single night because it's a great venue," belched Jeremy Stork, drummer in bands. "Now they've even booked a show. I love this place."

the iLike Video for "Get Yourself Home"
"Sick, tired, torn, and frayed, These United States let no dust settle under their soles this spring as they made the pilgrimage from DC to Lexington, KY just 9 weeks after the release of their debut album, sights set on a rock-and-roll reformation. The result is Crimes, TheseUS's sophomore album, recorded in six short days at Shangri-La Studios, and out to the world September 23.
One part Rolling Thunder Revue, one part banged-and-bruised balladeering, two parts just plain strange, Crimessees the band hitch an American folklore ride down diverging tracks from A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden's trembling psych-folk tendencies. Bandleader Jesse Elliott's casual croon careens more often towards a yearning yelp - desperate times, you know? - as his merry gang of Obviously Five Believers vamp all piss and vinegar, hoot and holler, multi-instrumental mischief and sly saloon smiles.
In place of Picture's lovelorn protagonists, Crimes supplants the classic characters of a world gone wicked: bad men in boots and boats, all-too-able Cains, wolves in fresh-shorn sheepskin, sold-out sirens of the seashore, knife-wielding big-talking drunk drinkers, Moriartys, don Quijotes, Samuel Clemenses, and all manner of disillusioned Appleseeds in between - with the occasional dogged optimist thrown in for good measure, of course; even the world itself can't be all bad all the time. As self-effacing as they are scathing, though, Crimes' critiques are ultimately an empathetic eye towards the sins, schemes, devils, and delusions that bind us all. Dreams, in other words.
Hot off pressing the '08 flesh from Paris to Portland and Glastonbury Fest to SXSW, These United States will of course continue their mad march to - well, any sea that will have them - in support of Crimes. "

WILD AT HEART - Monday October 27th 2008
Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University
Wild At Heart
This past weekend was wonderful despite some occasional glimpses at bad weather. I actually saw a car with snow on it. I’m not sure where he was from, but I was glad I didn’t come from the same place. It is too early for me to be thinking about snowy weather. The opera Margaret Gardner was excellent and now I can look forward to the next production at the Detroit Opera House which is a group of dance numbers by the troop Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Some of the pieces will include an newly tweaked version of Alejandro Cerrudo's "Extremely Close," the world premiere of Toru Shimazaki's "Fold" and a updated revival of Israeli Ohad Naharin masterpiece "Minus 16”. This is one of the best contemporary dance ensembles in the country and shouldn’t be missed. I will hopefully get one of the ensemble on my show on WXOU 88.3FM (or online at www.wxou.org) this Thursday. I will however, have cast member Cole Porter (no relation to the “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” composer) who plays Brian in the upcoming Fisher Theatre production of Avenue Q (starts Nov 5th).
Musically, I was at a couple of cool shows but the best of the bunch was David Byrne who played a great set at the Michigan Theatre who was doing a tribute to the songs he did with Brian Eno. The set included some of my favorite Talking Heads songs such as “I Zimba”, “Burning Down The House”, “Heaven” and my personal favorite “Once In A Lifetime”. A number of the songs had him accompanied by dancers on stage which led to some fun moments like one song where they are whizzing between David and the microphone or where one of them leaps over David. This is probably my favorite show of the year so far and makes me strongly await the upcoming Brian Wilson show (also at the Michigan Theatre) on Nov 12th (I will be giving away tickets for the show next week on my radio program so tune in).
This week, my concert calendar looks at Janet Jackson & LL Cool J @ the Palace of Auburn Hills on the 28th (I finally get to see one of the crazy Jackson’s in person, I’m hoping for a wardrobe malfunction), Sara Bareills @ the Fillmore on the 30th and a Halloween show featuring ICP @ the Fillmore. Also, Nov 2nd @ the Magic Bag is Uh Huh Her (WXOU will be giving away tickets for this show also). If you go to the station in the basement of the Oakland Center, there are some free White Lion tickets on the promotions table for their appearance at the Emerald on the 28th. Other cool shows I can’t make it to are Jolie Holland @ The Crofoot (Oct 28th), Jessica Lee Mayfield @ the Pike Room (Oct 29th – trying to get her on my show), and WAR @ Arturo’s Jazz Theatre (Oct 31st-Nov 2nd).
Getting back to theatre, I saw a couple of fun plays for the holiday season. My first stop was at the Ringwald Theater for “Love And Human Remains” which is a comedy-drama that follows the lives of several sexually frustrated "thirty-something’s" who try to learn the meaning of love. This is somewhat dampened by the presence of a serial killer which might be known to some of the characters in the play. My favorite character is Joe Bailey as David, a homosexual waiter that is jaded on love but willing to make fun of his heterosexual roommate Candy and her experiment with lesbianism and his flirting with the barely of age busboy. We also have an otherworldly Benita who is a prostitute with psychic abilities and a good friend of David’s. We also have Bernie (David’s troubled best friend), Jerri (a lesbian who falls in love with Candy) and Kane (the busboy who seems to fall for David but denies being gay). This is a fun piece for the season and as Joe puts it, “we have some equal opportunity nudity in the show” which should appeal to the audience. The Ringwald is known for putting on some really unique productions and this is no different. Check out their website www.whowantscaketheatre.com for dates (runs until Nov 10th) and ticket prices.
For those who want a little more blood in their theatre, you can check out the Oakland University production of “A Nightmare On Elm Street”, the last installment of a trilogy which included productions of “Halloween” and “Friday The 13th”. The 1984 horror film is diluted down to an hour long piece which sees Freddy take out his revenge on a group of five teenagers, one of which might have the power to bring him into the real world. Being a dream character, this makes Freddy a little different than Michael or Jason to pull off in a convincing fashion but the cast does their best and you can feel a true love for the project. There are a few things I would have liked to see them do differently to make the production a little scarier, but this show is like seeing a good friend and can be enjoyed for what it is. I know the girl behind me was going crazy as she was trying to keep her eyes opened despite the fright. The show does have a few good fights that have you cheering for the kids but in the end, Freddy gets his due including the memorable bed scene. The first show was a sell out so make sure you get their early or call ahead. The show runs until Oct 31st at 10:30PM every day in the basement of Varner Hall with a midnight showing on Halloween. Nightmare trivia - According to Wes Craven, his decision to cast Johnny Depp (yes that Johnny Depp) was influenced by his daughter and a friend of hers who thought he was the "cutest" of the final three choices (I think they have a good eye and should be hired by Hollywood execs right away).
For a change of pace, you can also go to the Henry Ford Museum to see the newest exhibition “Out Of This World” which runs through Jan 11th. The exhibit pays homage to the costume designers of some of Hollywood’s best known movie heroes and villains. Included in this exhibit is Margaret Hamilton’s witches’ hat from “The Wizard Of Oz”. Indiana Jones “jacket and whip”, Dan Aykroyd’s Ghostbusters II uniform, Clooney’s “nipple” batsuit and various costumes from Enemy Mine, Terminator, T2, Blade Runner, Highlander and Tron. This also includes one of the movie Batmobiles and the car from Ghostbusters. For Star Trek fans, you can see Kirk’s uniform from the “Mirror Mirror” episode, Seven of Nine’s jumpsuit and a Gorn costume among other things. On the Star wars side, we have Darth Vader’s costume, Skywalker’s severed hand and lightsabre and Obi-Wan’s cloak. My favorite piece is a Viper Suit from the new Battlestar Galactica series. If you look at the left leg, you can see a flight check off list sewn into the leg. Being a huge fan of sci-fi fantasy, I must admit to being a little geeked to see some of these items and I’m sure most movie fans will enjoy it to. The exhibit is free with admission and you can go to www.thehenryford.org for more information. The last room is great for kids where they can get a free picture of themselves in Gotham or Oz (that’s one X-mas present for the parents down), watch old movie trailers or make their own comic strips and costumes. So grab a kid (hopefully your own) or inner child and get down to the Henry Ford. Also, if you haven’t been their recently, make sure you stop by the newly revamped “With Liberty And Justice For All” to see Lincoln’s chair and the Rosa Parks bus and “Heroes of the Sky” to see Byrd’s 1926 Fokker Trimotor among other amazing airplanes.
Now, there are also a couple of movies you can see. I personally recommend the new Bill Maher documentary “Religulous”, the title derived from blending the words "religion" and "ridiculous". Bill says he doesn’t believe in “God” but is open to anyone who can show him proof which of course when dealing with something faith based is hard to do. Bill seems to want to mock the kooks and give credence to those who can at least seem intelligent. He does a little traveling which I give him credit for going to such places as Jerusalem, the Vatican and Salt Lake City, and does interviews with numerous believers from a variety of backgrounds and groups, including Jews for Jesus, Christians, Muslims, former Mormons, Satanists, Hasidic Jews and a guy who believes Marijuana brings one closer to God. My favorite interview is with Father Reginald Foster (a Catholic priest, senior Vatican scholar and one of the great living experts in Latin literature) who gives Bill a no nonsense look at modern Catholicism (even telling Bill some of what he went through as a kid no longer applies – priceless). While sometimes he goes to far with his subjects, he does give enough information to start a dialogue about religion and what it means to us. The downside is that this film might only appeal to Maher fans (of which I am one) but even if you are a believer, this is one of the funniest movies of the year. It is also nice seeing Bill’s mom in the film and she adds a touch of class to it. It’s also funny hearing a Muslim tell Bill he is not very funny! Grade: A.
There is also the new comedy “Sex Drive” is a about a high school senior who goes on a cross-country road trip (what is with all the road trip movies nowadays) to hook up with a girl he met online. Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is an 18-year-old recent high school graduate who has trouble meeting girls and has some sexy talk with "Ms. Tasty" (Katrina Bowden) and agrees to meet her in person. The catch is that she lives in Knoxville and he doesn’t have a car. His best friend Lance (Clark Duke) convinces him to steal his brothers’ car without permission to go to her. One snag has his best friend Felicia (sexy Amanda Crew), tags along on this ill-fated trip. The movie is basic and has some laughs and seeing Seth Green as an Amish mechanic is quite fun, though like most movie post-Fast Times or Porky’s, it finds itself hard to sustain the big laughs or the cult status for longevity. Still, it isn’t a bad diversion though don’t expect much. Grade: C+.
Well, I think that is all for this blog. Have a good week everyone and I’ll see you next week.
Feel free to check out page at myspace.com/wildatheart_13 for any updates. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, this Wednesday I’ll be an extra in the new Rob Schneider film "Virgin on Bourbon Street" (might not be real title since not in imdb) which is filming over the next month down by Greektown. If you would like to be an extra in the film, please contact Nicolas at iwannabeinamovie@gmail.com. They are looking for college kids to be in some party scenes and parades. Look out Hollywood, here comes Wild Bill!!

THAT DAMNED SHOW - DEVILS NIGHT - TANGENT GALLERY DETROIT
BENEFIT FOR MUSIC HALL: “Elaine Stritch - At Liberty” - Jazz CafĂ© - Fri Oct 31st-Sun Nov 2nd
3 Performances- October31-November 2nd
To Benefit Music Hall Center For The Performing Art’s Jazz CafĂ©
Native Detroiter and Broadway legend, Elaine Stritch returns to reprise her Tony Award-winning one woman show, “Elaine Stritch - At Liberty”, for three shows, Friday, October 31, Saturday, November 1st at 8PM and Sunday, November 2nd at 7 PM in the cozy confines of Jazz CafĂ© at Music Hall.
Born in Detroit in 1926, Stritch debuted on Broadway in the 1952 revue, Angel In The Wings, became Ethel Merman's understudy in Irving Berlin's, "Call Me Madam" and went on to a career that has spanned 6 decades. Stritch has had 4 Tony Award nominations, winning one in 2002 for "Elaine Stritch - At Liberty".“At Liberty” is a fascinatingly, bittersweet reminiscence of Stritch’s long and colorful career, replete with songs, stories and a self-effacing sense of humor that cover her life at The Actors Workshop (Dating Marlon Brando) on Broadway (creating her brash character, Joanne from Company) and her nearly 50-year battle with alcoholism, all delivered with honesty and in her trademark gorgeously gravelly voice.
Jazz CafĂ© at Music Hall, is the perfect setting for this Tony Award-winning one-gal show where you can enjoy, up close and personal and in a timeless atmosphere, an entertainment legend covering a career in which she was a bonafide, “Triple Threat” (Actor, Singer & Dancer) and a one-of-a-kind personality. The D.A. Pennebaker documentary of Elaine Stritch at Liberty (2004) combined rehearsal elements and her stage performance, and also won several Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Achievement in a Variety or Music Program.
