Detroit's hottest party celebrates Carnivale

The young professionals of Michigan Opera Theatre's Volunteer Association will once again hold one of Detroit's hottest and most-anticipated cultural events of the year. BravoBravo! 2012: Color the Night, presented by Chrysler, will showcase Detroit's top restaurants and best entertainment to thousands of revelers, all in support of Michigan Opera Theatre. This year's event will run from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Friday, June 8, at the Detroit Opera House (1526 Broadway, Detroit).

Now in its 13th year, BravoBravo! 2012 celebrates carioca-style, as the opulent Detroit Opera House transforms into an exotic Carnivale celebration, including the famed Copa Cabana and sexy girls from Ipanema. Three of Detroit's most involved young professionals co-chair this year's event: Dominic Arellano, Amy Kaminsky and Walter Pilon.

Events like BravoBravo! are vital to the continued success and daily operation of Michigan Opera Theatre. The sell-out event annually draws crowds of more than 2,000 young professionals, and last year raised $185,000 for the arts institution. Since its inception, BravoBravo! has raised more than $1 million and is a crucial fundraising effort for the organization.

Tickets start at $90 in advance and go on sale April 2. Tickets are available at the Detroit Opera House box office, by phone at (313) 237-SING, or online at www.BravoBravo.org. The event is expected to sell out. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Wild At Heart

Hope you all had a good week. Mine has been a little hectic but getting better. After catching Twin Atlantic here in Rochester, I got news my dad was in the hospital to get his appendix removed. It’s one of those things that just hits you when you least expect it and I was worried for a bit but he made it through OK and just got released from the hospital.

Anyway, Twin Atlantic is from Glasgow, Scotland and is starting to hit it big on the other side of the Atlantic. Their sophomore album “Free” came out last year and broke into the top 20 albums for a bit peaking at #12. They are trying to promote themselves here in the states now and after opening for the likes of Blink-182 and Say Anything, they did a brief headlining tour of smaller venues. Next month they will be back in Europe and are set to return in July for some dates on the Warped Tour. They won’t be on the Detroit bill but will be on dates in Noblesville, IN, Cuyahoga Falls, OH and Toronto, ON for those fans that travel around. They are more on lighter side of that grouping but can rock out a few numbers too. I enjoyed their sound and would recommend checking them out if you hit one of their Warped Tour dates.

Yesterday, after I knew my father was officially alright, I took a little road trip to Canandaigua, NY which is right on the tip of the Finger Lakes (or the Thousand Islands), a beautiful area of mountains, lakes, wineries and beautiful scenic countryside. This area has an Indian casino, a wonderful antique mall, a great German restaurant and some historic buildings. I went after work and spent about 2 ½ hours at the antique mall before heading down to the City Pier. I’ll let you read the sign about the Pier’s history (you can tell I’m getting lazy).

The boat houses have an interesting feel and I have not come across any place like it in my travels. It is not a big area but has a certain rustic charm which is nice to enjoy, esp when the weather is nice. There were a lot of fishermen out that afternoon but the boathouse area was mainly vacant at that time since no boats were yet out. Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy.

Just behind the Pier, you can see NY State’s smallest Metropark, Squaw Island, which is the birthplace of the Seneca Indian Nation. It doesn’t look like much now but it was much larger at one point. Erosion has taken its toll over the years though steps have been taken to help preserve the area. According to legend, the women and children of the Seneca tribe sought refuge here upon the invasion of their homeland in 1779.

Looking to get into things this week as we have a Women In Music Festival here which does focus on the more classical forms so I’ll be checking that out all week. If you are looking for something in Detroit, here are a few options you might be interested in, esp the California Guitar Trio. I saw them at Callahans a little over a year ago and they really impressed me.

I would also like to congratulate James Cameron on his historic dive yesterday. On March 25, Cameron reached the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench, where he spent more than three hours exploring the ocean floor before returning to the surface. Cameron is the first person to accomplish the trip solo and I assume he took lots of footage which will be made into an IMAX film in the near future. It amazes me that the guy who brought us “Piranha II” and “The Terminator” has this amazing second career as inventing ways to make better underwater filming and remote vehicles. I remember all the talk when they made “The Abyss” about the diving suits he inspired so they could film the complicated shots underwater. No matter how much I enjoy his films, I am becoming way more impressed by his scientific interests. To paraphrase him, he’s King of the Underwater World.

purgatory / noun / an intermediate place or state of temporary suffering for expiatory purification

Within the word "purgatory", it is easy to envision condemned souls, torment and darkness. However, purgatory may also reflect the cyclic state in which we often rediscover or recreate ourselves anew from within our personal inflictions. Sometimes it is the necessary stage to exorcise ourselves from the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps it is the serene place of self reflection and realization.

From within this, DAMNED proudly presents an exhibition of powerful cinema called Purgatory. Held on March 30th & 31st 2012 at the Tangent Gallery in Detroit, Purgatory will present various short films of deeply introspective, beautifully disturbing and darkly enlightening subject matters from filmmakers local and worldwide. This is not an industry-focused horror film festival, but a tributary showcase of the often redemptive films from the filmmaker's personal damnations.

This sublime moonlight event features enormous processionals of hand-made illuminated sculptures carried by dancing teams of merrymakers as they thread their way downtown to the corner of Washington and Ashley streets in the heart of Ann Arbor. Pageant participants and revelers alike can boogie to the soul/funk dancin'-in-the-streets-party created by the Third Coast Kings after bopping to the beat of JUICE, a percussion-on-steroids drill and thrill show plus Heroes on Parade. Happy Hour (dubbed the "Five O'clock Shadow") will feature DJ fired Salsa Dancing in front of Grizzly Peak and Sweetwaters. Don't forget to savor some delicious MoonPies by Decadent Delight, buy a limited edition glow-in-the-dark FoolMoon T-shirt or sip a FoolBrew made especially for FoolMoon and served under the Grizzly Peak beer tent! Plus, unique street-sized shadow-puppet performances, experimental silent films, Orbit's Crazy Luminary Hair Salon, the season opening of Mark's Carts, and other surprises. Community members and area artists are busy creating hundreds of glowing handmade sculptural lanterns in preparation for this spectacular illuminated extravaganza. For those who still want to spend a short couple of hours making a luminary, the Luminary Sculpture Kits are available for sale ($20 with proceeds benefiting FestiFools and FoolMoon) at both ACE Barnes Hardware stores (Washtenaw and Stadium), Downtown Home and Garden (Ashley St.) and Sweetwaters (on Washington). Simple directions for making a luminary sculpture lantern can be found on YouTube: "FoolMoon Luminary 2012".

Artists, gawkers, and roving musicians are encouraged to meet up at one of three "Constellation Stations" between 7:30-8:00 pm on Friday March 30th. The three locations are the front lawn of the U-M Museum of Art, Kerrytown Farmer's Market, and Slauson Middle School parking lot. A beautiful, multitude of hand-made illuminated lantern sculptures will then start heading towards downtown at sundown (approx. 8:15pm, arriving downtown at 8:40).

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt @ The Fillmore

I felt privileged to be at this show. It was like an episode of storytellers. No, it was something more. I felt like I got to watch two good friends hang-out and enjoy each other's company. You could've changed the chair's to tree stumps, the table into a fire, and the stage into a backyard and you wouldn't have known the difference. I'm glad I got to see them in this type of setting.

I wondered how the show was going to happen with Lyle and John being on equal footing starwise. As I walked and saw the stage, I knew we was in for a treat. They would be sharing the stage, playing together. It work quite sell too. They took turns playing songs, supporting each other as needed. There was a nice interplay between the two. The banter between the songs seemed real. The show had a intimate feel to it. Though they weren't taking requests, when the fans called out a song, they would consider playing them and at times did. It was a great show for the fans to see.

It was a great show to cover, to see. There was no opening act, which wasn't even missed. They played for two, unrushed hours. Listen to crowd after the show was over, everyone was quite satisfied.

Show review: Mustard Pimp, Blatta & Inesha, Boss Club

On Friday night I took in the Mustard Pimp, Blattta & Inesha show at Boss Club in Detroit. As the kick off to upcoming electronic shows at Boss Club promoted by Nabil Presents and Nightsneak, the show seemed to offer everything, great electronic DJs, brilliant lights, posh club environment and a decent sound system. The only thing the show really lacked was a large crowd, which is really a shame, as I think a night was missed that would have surely been enjoyed by fans of electronic dance music. For those that were there we certainly did enjoy the night with a good start from local DJ Sento, an aggressive electro assault set from France's Mustard Pimp and an electro dance set from Italy's Blatta & Inesha. Upcoming shows at Boss Club include Felix De Housecat on April 20, Designer Drugs on May 18 and Helicopter Showdown on June 8th.

Margot will launch a lengthy North American headlining tour later this month, beginning on March 31^st at the sold out CD101 Side A festival in Columbus, OH. The first leg of the tour heads eastward and wraps up on April 21^st at The Masquerade (downstairs) in Atlanta, GA and includes an April 11^th show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. The second westward leg will begin on May 10^th at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI and wrap up on June 2^nd at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, IL, including a May 23^rd performance at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles, CA. Rot Gut, Domestic is Margot's rawest take on their evocative, soaring brand of guitar-centric pop, following in the footsteps of the more brazen, rocking songs that comprised 2010's Buzzard (called "masterpieces of controlled tension" by SPIN). Singer/songwriter Richard Edwards wrote the album over 26 days in Pismo Beach, CA last spring. Plagued by chronic stomach pain, he'd headed to Pismo Beach - which had become a respite of calm and healing to the band over the years - following the last days of touring around Buzzard. Rot Gut, Domestic was conceived as the second installment of the band's 'panic pop' trilogy, Edwards composing a new set of songs about Midwestern fringe characters set to his skewed version of the pop music on which he was raised. Upon returning to his current hometown of Chicago, IL, Edwards and the rest of the band headed into Electrical Audio studio with Congleton. Margotchurned out these 12 resounding tracks over 10 days in July before Congleton returned to his Dallas, TX studio to mix the album.

Career-Defining Release From Acclaimed Act

November 16, 2011 (New York, NY) – School Of Seven Bells are back with their third

release, Ghostory, out February 28 on Vagrant Records/Ghostly Inernational. The

highly-anticipated album finds the band’s lineup has evolved along with the music;

formerly a trio, the band is now a duo: guitarist/producer Benjamin Curtis and

vocalist Alejandra Deheza

Recorded in-between tours, Ghostory exemplifies a fervent progression of SVIIB’s

growth as artists, preserving the common themes found on their last two releases but

exposing them in different fashions. The familiar ethereal and enigmatic tones are

omnipresent, surrounded by layers of influences from ‘80s pop, shoegaze and ambient

electronic sounds. However, Ghostory comes with a story in mind; the tale of a young

girl named Lafaye and the ghosts that surround her life.

School Of Seven Bells formed in 2006 as a trio (including Claudia Deheza) and released

their debut full-length, Alpinisms, on Ghostly International in 2008. The group’s appeal

grew exponentially, with their signature sounds stemming from pieces of electronic

subgenres and shoegaze bands before them. By 2010, the group released the critically

acclaimed Disconnect From Desire on Ghostly International and Vagrant. Ghostory is

truly their defining work, beautifully crafted and haunting, with the story of Lafaye

permeating the psyche long after the music stop.

CONDUITS and CURSIVE in ANN ARBOR, March 27th @ The Blind Pig

The original Conduits demos were the creation of JJ Idt and Nate Mickish, two guitarists already busy in the Omaha music scene with their anxious pop and rock outfits. Working together, the pair found much more to express than just inner angst. They were aiming for soundscapes that embraced drones, psychedelia, and a fervent rhythmic punch. And the more they played the more they heard a female voice filling in the empty spaces in these songs.

Enter Jenna Morrison. Best known for her work as a member of indie rockers Son, Ambulance, Morrison brought that rare combination of attainability and remoteness (think: Gibbons, Hope Sandoval, Trish Keenan, Sandy Denny) to her vocal performances. It was the perfect element to help spark these already tempestuous creations into full-blown blazes.

The band - rounded out by bassist Mike Overfield, keyboardist Patrick Newbery, and drummer Roger Lewis - has taken off like a shot since those first demos. They've secured a number of amazing support slots in their hometown, sharing the stage with acts like The Hold Steady and The Appleseed Cast, as well as doing a short, well-received jaunt opening for Bright Eyes.

Now, Conduits is looking to take on the rest of the U.S. and beyond with the release of their debut self-titled album. The eight-song dreamscape flows with a cinematic ambition. Songs like "Top of the Hill" and "Limbs and Leaves" provide the soundtrack for slow motion dance scenes, while "Last Dirge" and "Misery Train" are all fast edits and racing hearts.
