Show Preview: Electro Future Fest is Saturday at St. Andrews Hall

This Saturday has got Yorg Kerasiotis, vocals and synth specialist of Flashclash, all worked up. With good reason too, as Saturday marks the first (hopefully annual) Electro Future Fest at St Andrews Hall which Yorg has been putting in overtime working on.  “I’m so excited for this show! We get to play with Randy (Deastro) who is a local synth-god and the gifted Tunde Olaniran. And there’s so much more that’s cool about this festival. I can go on forever about it.”

To clue you in on just a few of the things Yorg is so excited about, Flint Eastwood, which Yorg refers to as “the gem of the show. Every time they play they blow the crowd away.” Having seen a spectacular set from Flint Eastwood last year I can vouch those words as truth. There’s also maybe lesser known acts on the bill like Slufter, Sugar Baron and Hotel Motel. But, Yorg assures me “they are only lesser known because word is just starting get out on these bands, they are all amazing.”

There will be no downtime at the show because DJ Skeez is playing in between sets. Another special part of the show will be fashion shows throughout the night from Peace, Love and Spandex and Detroit Hustles Harder. “Fashion is an important part of music. I don’t mean that in a pretentious way, but bands that think a little about how they look when they play means something to me.” Yorg adds.

All and all it’s going to be a hot day and night (they are calling for 90 degrees!), so don that fashion friendly t-shirt and invite those young friends and family because it’s all ages and those kiddies should get experienced in good music and good times. Tickets are $12 and doors are at 5pm.

10,000 posts on MOTORCITYBLOG calls for a day off and tons of giveaways!

Earlier in the week I got a message from one of our longtime contributors Andrew asking if we were doing anything special regarding our 10,000 post on MCB?

10,000 posts? I had even thought about it and so in typical MCB fashion I put the word out at the 11th hour to wrangle up some kind of prize packs and sure enough this one is pretty sweet.

I started MCB nearly 9 years ago and have watched it morph one way or another from what is was to what it is now.  What is MCB really?  For the readers it provides a lot of information in various forms about fun things to do and lots and lots of free giveaways.  For the contributors it has produced a ton of great opportunities to cover events as "media" and develop their writing, photographic and reporting crafts.  For the artists, bands, venues and promoters it is a useful tool to get the word out on events.

For me it has become way more than I could have ever expected or anticipated.  Looking beyond the obvious "perks" such as the non-stop flow of free swag or never paying for a concert or meeting up with rock stars to me the most important thing MCB has produced are some of my best friends.

Many of our contributors (some of which I still have not met to this day) started out by entering a contest of some sort, winning tickets and then eventually covering events for MCB.

So I really want to give a shout out to all the MCB peeps who do what they do and helped us reach 10,000....we appreciate all of you reading this site and supporting the local artists as well as the many who visit the motorcity!

Hailing from Brooklyn via south of the Mason-Dixon, THE LONE BELLOW features lead singer and principal songwriter Zach Williams, singer and mandolin player Kanene Pipkin and guitarist Brian Elmquist.

 

At the heart of it, Zach Williams is an intentional songwriter focused on growing a community, rather than merely finding a following.  Georgia-born Williams began songwriting in 2005, during a prolonged stay at Atlanta's Shepherd Center after his wife was thrown from a horse and paralyzed from the neck down. With a dire diagnosis of quadriplegia, there was nothing to do but sit vigil with his group of friends - also artists.  While they waited for healing, Zach picked up a guitar and taught himself to play, putting melody to a journal entry that would become his first song, "Hospital." His wife eventually recovered (her spinal cord, initially thought severed, was terribly bruised) and the couple and their group of friends moved to Brooklyn shortly thereafter.

 

Williams and the band's music evolved to reflect his Southern roots, incorporating elements of rock, gospel, country and blues that result in a unique and soul-searing blend of can't-get-them-out-of-your-head lyrics that spring from a deep emotional reservoir. The upcoming record is a complete work, a "collection of stories embodying tragedy, hope, betrayal and redemption."

During the late 1960s the Grande Ballroom stood at the epicenter of the Detroit rock scene that spawned bands such as Iggy & The Stooges, Alice Cooper, The Frost, SRC and more. The Grande also inspired British acts such as Led Zeppelin, Cream and Pink Floyd, many of whom dreaded having to follow a blistering opening set by the MC5. Louder Than Love documents the creative and revolutionary frenzy of Detroit in the 1960s with rare archival footage and interviews by surviving musicians, and explores the now abandoned theater haunted by this legacy. (75 min.)

Special guests Wayne Kramer of the MC5, Curatorial Director Howard Kramer from the Roll and Roll Hall of Fame, and Louder Than Love director Tony D’Annunzio will all be present to discuss the film with the audience after the screening. This special encore showing of Louder Than Love is part of the Concert of Colors and is free to the public.

SHOW REVIEW: the Postal Service at the Fillmore, Detroit by Michael Welchans

It was April, 2003, two months after their Sub Pop release, Give Up, when Benjamin Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, electronic music artist, Dntel (Jimmy Tamborello) and keyboardist/vocalist Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kenny last played together in Detroit. It was clear that they were unable to sell out The Magic Stick.

Ten years later, with just two new tracks, the trio, adding Laura Burhenn from the Mynabirds to provide additional vocals and instruments, sold out The Fillmore, which holds three times as many fans.

This makes perfect sense. The Postal Service has since influenced countless artists who combine electronic with indie-pop, and has since sold over a million copies of its only full-length recording. (The band’s name also helped popularize a modern method of making music: by recording separately in different places and exchanging submixes of the recordings via, for example, the United States Postal Service.)

Opening with “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, ” followed by “We Will Become Silhouettes,” and soon a *new* track, “Turn Around,” and then “Recycled Air,” it was clear that this was no Björk show; the songs were being played true to form, without much discernible remixing, rearrangement or new instrumentation. For an electronic music, this is almost unheard of, but in pop music, especially when there is such a huge gap in time since anybody has seen the act live, this is consummate. Every track from Give Up was played almost exactly as it was recorded.

One exception to the rule was “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan,” from Dntel's album Life Is Full of Possibilities, the song that led to the formation of the Postal Service, which was played with a more melodic intro and which featured Benjamin Gibbard, a tantalizing new version of an the oldest track of the evening.

Always energetic and exciting to watch, Gibbard put the guitar down and played a drum set during several songs, adding more movement and variety to the song list to which everyone was all singing, all dancing. It was a true performance of poptronic perfection.

Show Review/Pics: Queensryche featuring Geoff Tate @ The Fillmore Detroit June 15th, 2013.

On tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic and revolutionary release of 1988's Operation: Mindcrime Geoff Tate and his version of Queensryche delivered a top notch performance true to the spirit of the record. With an all star band line up featuring guitarist Kelly Gray, keyboardist Randy Gane, dummer Brian Tichy, guitarist Robert Sarzo and bassist Rudy Sarzo, all with multiple big name rock band legends in their resumes, the band delivered an amazing rendition of each song that had the crowd  in the almost packed house singing along word for word. Sass Jordan filled in on stage for the role of Sister Mary in the epic track Suite Sister Mary, the tragic yet magnificent opus which marks the end of act one of the album, as well as sitting in on a few other songs to close out act two. There are many fans who are divided amongst the two different Queensryche lineups but you owe it to yourself to catch this epic performance if you can and enjoy the beauty of one of the greatest metal concept albums ever produced. It truly defines the very meaning of a rock opera.

Welcome to the sound of Winston Yellen and Night Beds, who in one stunning ten-track debut album Country Sleep, have shown that there is plenty of life left in the world of American music if you have the voice, the songs and the gift to touch hearts and souls. Think of a space between Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon), Gram Parsons and the dreamier side of My Morning Jacket; a heavenly place of pure country soul, touched by an endearing innocence and honesty that can only come from someone still in their early twenties.


From Colorado Springs, and now a resident of Nashville where he first moved to study, Yellen's road to Country Sleep has been anything but the straightest and easiest. In 2006, he formed Night Beds and self-released three rudimentary EPs between 2008 and 2011.

Waylaid by what Yellen's friend Nika States recalls as, "a lot of alcohol, and a lot of irreverent tuning," he dropped out of college. After losing his job and girlfriend, and in the spirit of the country classic 'Me & Bobby McGee' - "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" - Yellen took off on a five-month sojourn. Moving from state to state, he lived out of his hatchback car performing menial odd jobs and mopping Church floors until, he says, "a friend instilled in me the need to cut the bullshit and move back to Nashville."

Taking out a loan, Yellen rented an out-of-town, pre-civil war home in the woods that was previously owned by the late Johnny Cash and June Carter (and still maintained by the couple's friends). Inspired by the serendipity of the discovery, he started working on Country Sleep, both in his country retreat and back in civilisation at Nashville's Brown Owl studio.

Night Beds was conceived in a place that is usually just the domain of dreams. As Winston Yellen explains, "the name is tongue in cheek, but a lot of the music was developed at night, from listening to, or writing in my bed." And it feels very nocturnal. Night Beds is a landscape, or an ethereal escape for the soul.

Country Sleep begins with just a voice, a high and tender lament, for 71 precious seconds; a spirit to be reckoned with. Next up, a full band kicks up some dust behind a deliciously bittersweet melody. After that, more beautiful crooning unfolds over a violin/guitar backdrop that keeps building until the pace momentarily quickens to the sound of handclaps before a sudden, heart-aching fade. The album concludes with "TENN", as in Tennessee, written the next day after the night before, hungover and lost. Yellen admits the songs were often born out of, "destructive circumstances, and many varied attempts to sedate myself."

Indeed, anyone listening to Country Sleep – whose title harks back to the 'night bed' in the back of his car – will also find the record a cathartic experience.

Backed by various musicans and a careful ear for arrangement, Winston Yellen and Night Beds are not here to simply sing you to sleep, but to soundtrack your hopes, fears and dreams.

Show Interview/Review: Why? the Crofoot Thursday, June 13

The band Why? has never played in the Greater Detroit area until last week. A shocking fact for a band that has been around for 10 or so years and high level of indie credibility. This revelation along with a few others  I found out last week when I spoke to drummer, Josiah Wolf, before the show.  As we sat outside at the Crofoot patio on a beautiful early evening we talked about the tour, his relationship with his brother Yoni  and life in Cincinnati.  Josiah has played drums and percussion for most of his life and with Why? has made his living at it, but admits it isn’t easy. “I’ve had side jobs as a waiter or doing various things but we make our money on the road so it’s always been more temporary than permanent.”

While he’s spent time on the West Coast in the Oakland area he’s quick to say his home is in Cincinnati where he recently purchased a house and spent his formative years there.  Josiah is the older brother who with his casual button down shirt and relaxed tone makes it easy to pick out a few differences between him and his more eccentric brother, Yoni. “Yoni is maybe more temperamental than me but we have always gotten along.” Later, that evening it’s clear the crowd is enthralled with Yoni as his name is chanted and shouted out throughout their set.

Josiah explains the difference with this tour is they have a 2nd drummer along as an added element. There are also no electronics or samplers on the stage. ”We have more of an organic approach to playing live. My wife, Liz, is on tour with us playing keyboards and bass.” Why? make good use of the vast floor space of the Crofoot by placing the drums at opposite ends of the stage and the other instruments, keyboards and guitar in between them forming  a “U” shape, leaving Yoni plenty of space to dance and run while performing his run-on rapping and antics.

“This is only our second show and last night was a little choppy. The crowd was great though. I have no idea what to expect tonight, I’m not even sure how many will show up.” Josiah tells me this with a bit of concern. However, his concern was unnecessary as a nice size crowd of enthusiastic fans are in attendance. Moreover, there’s a great mood throughout the audience as on most songs many are rapping and singing along with Yoni. Despite the crowd and the comradery with the fans, there’s one sticking issue with the mic cord popping. It’s distracting from their otherwise exceptional set but not enough to upset the crowd which at the end is still begging for more.

Wild At Heart


It seems like it is raining every day here almost. Like the Men's tournament this weekend, the LPGA here in Rochester had a number of rainy days to start their tournament. Luckily things got better and last Sunday was an amazing day for golf fans as Scotland's Catriona Matthew came from out of nowhere to shot a 4 under while the number one golfer Inbee Park shot a 3 over to both end up at a playoff at -5. They ended up playing three extra holes after playing two rounds earlier in the day to make up for all the rain earlier in the week. After last years blow out win, this added a nice level of drama to what might be the last year of the tournament. Suzann Pettersen had a great day shooting a day best -7 to tie for third place with American Morgan Pressel who narrowly missed a number of birdie shots that might have given her the win. The more I attend this great tournament, the more I appreciate what these girls do and they are very approachable. I got a number of autographs other the course of the tournament along with my girl Michelle Wie who actually made the cut this year to tie for 9th place at -2.



The only other nice night this week saw me in Buffalo to see an amazing Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros free concert by the canal. A nice way for me to start the summer concert series as those guys rocked to an average size crowd. Here are some good shows coming up this week:

They will be giving a lecture for "Basic Kind Lecture Series" curated and organized by Ashley Cook on the third Thursday of June (06/20/2013). The lecture will be a discussion on the process of creation and participation in an interdisciplinary investigation. The artists will share their own artistic methodology that they are creating between scientific investigation (collecting data, archival research, etc) and formal/informal relations with local/international participants.~

Basic Kind is a monthly lecture series that introduces new opportunities for presentation, conversation and critical dialogue.
We are approaching the planning of this series with intent to explore various topics and the links between, as well as how each would approach the act of presentation differently; we are interested in highlighting the multifaceted world of presentation and the effectiveness of the different strategies taken.

Emagination Engineering Inaugural Gallery Show Friday June 21st - 22nd

Please come out and help celebrate all of the hard work the volunteers have put into helping this gallery get it's feet wet. This will be a two night event Friday and Saturday, June 21st and 22nd. After that the gallery will be on a hiatus while most work is done to it. This is a chance to see the space progress from a 'raw' environment and, over time, into it's fully realized incarnation. NYCHOS Makes Detroit Debut At Inner State Gallery

Austrian Artist Shows New Anatomical Paintings In Eastern Market

Inner State Gallery welcomes NYCHOS for his first Detroit solo exhibition titled “I’d Like To Meat You!” opening Friday June 21st.  This exhibition is free and open to the public, opening night artist’s reception will run from 7-10pm and the exhibition will remain on view through July 18th.

In “I’d Like to Meat You!” Nychos will showcase an entirely new body of work inspired by his love of anatomy, graffiti and Detroit’s Eastern Market, an area with a storied history as a hub for public murals, produce and freshly butchered meat, all things the painter has long been acquainted with in his native country of Austria.

While staying in Detroit for more than a month finalizing his show, Nychos will be immersed in local culture, and specifically Eastern Market as he paints several murals throughout the neighborhood.  As June progresses his graffiti crew The WEIRD will be in Detroit for 2 weeks for a group exhibition at Inner State Gallery.  With 5 additional artists flying into town you can expect to see a changing landscape of new murals in Eastern Market.

Rogue Wave is out on their first tour in three years in support of their new LP Nightingale Floors (released June 4th via Vagrant Records).

Nightingale Floors is the band's fifth studio album. It's full of the melodic indie-pop that Rogue Wave does best, and this time sees the band exploring meditations on live and death – largely influenced by the loss of frontman Zach Schwartz's father during the writing of the LP. May sound heavy, but it's not: Zach used the experience to more deeply appreciate life, and Rogue Wave is sounding more confident than ever.
