Detroit Punk/Funk/Metal/Experimental Rock group Downtown Brown has been invited to tour with L.A. Punk Legends The Angry Samoans. The tour will take the bands together to the east coast and around the Midwest and will stop in Hamtramck onSaturday Sept 7th at Small's. Be sure not to miss this insane lineup that includes local surf/punk legends The Amino Acids and the raw power of The Farleys.
Detroit was dealt a King Friday night, a Redlight King. They headlined an amazing show Friday night at the Shelter, which also featured a high energy co-headliner, Icon for Hire. Opening the show was local Detroit band False City. They brought an energetic early crowd to the show. Following them bringing a solid mix of hip hop and rock was Big B, out of Las Vegas Nevada.
Icon for Hire was up next. A female fronted high energy rock band out of Illinois. They have spent the last 5 years touring heavily and have gained a solid following. It showed at this show. Most of their fans worked their way to the front of the crowd singing the words to every song over their 55 minute set. Judging by the huge line to meet them after the show this band will be here to stay.
Headlining the Detroit show was Redlight King. Fronted by Mark "Kaz" Kasprzyk out of Ontario Canada they feature a perfect mix of rock and a splash of hip hop. After a very solid debut album titled "Something for the Pain" the band is set to release it's second album "Irons in the Fire" on September 10th.

They opened the show with "Comeback" a hard hitting song off the debut album which also appeared on the Avengers soundtrack. Just a few songs later came the song that most would say put them on the map, a cover of Neil Young's "Old Man". With Mr Young's permission this is by far one of the best cover songs to come out in the last decade. They obviously did him proud. The song peaked at number 17 on Billboard's Alternative Song Chart.
The energetic set continued with a mix of songs from the debut album including "City Life", "Built to Last", and "Underground". The set included seven songs off the upcoming album including "Critical", "Bleed", "Redemption" (which is featured on the Iron Man 3 soundtrack), and the first single "Born to Rise". They closed the show with their biggest hit "Bullet In My Hand" which peaked at number three on Billboards Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks.

Redlight King is one of those bands that will win you over with their live show. A group full of energy led by "Kaz" and some of the most down-to-earth musicians out there. If you have not seen them you need to soon while you have the chance to check them out at some small venues. Years from now you will be thankful you did.
The new album "Irons in the Fire" will be available September 10th. You can check out the first single "Born To Rise" available now on iTunes.

Say a prayer for me! Want to get "Plowed" in a new way, thanks to '90s rockers Sponge?
ARTISTdirect has teamed up with Sponge, who had a huge hit in the '90s
with "Plowed," to premiere the video for "Fade From View," a new song
from the upcoming album Stop the Bleeding, out September 17 via The End Records.
"The video is loosely based on an episode of the tv series The Twilight Zone," frontman Vinnie Dombroski told ARTISTdirect about the song. We love Sponge and we love The Twilight Zone,
hence why we were stoked to premiere this clip.
Dombroski continued, "In the TV episode, a loud bell would ring and
suddenly a character would appear in a dimly lit, undefined space. We
took the opposite approach with one of our characters disappearing from
the scene. We also wanted to maintain the black and white feel of the
'60s TV show."
With that in mind, enjoy the video for "Fade From View." And then maybe dig for the episode, all your enterprising millenials!
To catch you up, these neo alt grungers will issue their seventh full-length studio album next month. Pre-order the album at theomegaorder.com.
Dombroski is a consummate frontman who captivates audiences with his
powerful voice, heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics and high-octane stage
presence. Sponge have proven to be one of the Motor City's heaviest
hitters after gaining international notoriety with their debut album Rotting PiƱata. We still heart that record.
One of the greatest progressive metal bands to ever come on to the scene, Queensryche returned En Force last night at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, MI. With new singer Todd La Torre taking over vocal duties in recent times, guitarist Parker Lundgren, along with founding members Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield, they delivered a stunning performance that revitalized the Queensryche sound we've come to miss over the years. La Torre is a stellar replacement on vocals, nailing notes on many of the songs from the early years of their catalog, with exhilarating performances of En Force, Walk In The Shadows, Speak, Warning and several others. Also included in the set for the night were some of their newer songs from their latest self-tilted album such as Where Dreams Go To Die. This is a Queensryche rejuvenated and you are in luck tonight because you can still get tickets to the show at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights tonight. Doors at 6pm, opening acts are Artificial Agent and Slaughter, with Queensryche as direct support for headliner Vince Neil. Get off your ass, buy some tickets, and come 'Ryche and Roll on the hill tonight!
Hey, you know who is going to be in Kentucky next month for this all-weekend horror/pop culture/paranormal convention? Malcolm Muhfkn McDowell.
Also about 12 million other horror, art, paranormal, TV, movie, music, performance, weirdo (hi, John E.L. Tenney!) luminaries.
But mostly...Malcolm Muhfkn McDowell.
Oh and you know who else? Your pal and humble narrator, DC-in-Detroit, that's who.
I am no autograph hound, but when presented with the opportunity to be glassball-to-glassball with the smirking embodiment of my ever-favorite movie since age 16 (yeah, I was that kind of a kid; you're surprised?) all wrapped up in 3 days of talks and costumes and music and parties — not to mention the beauty that is Lexington KY — it would take a very special kind of restraint to keep me away. And I'm not talking about will power.
Check out the ScareFest website for more details about the show, and stay tuned to MCB for a full-blown writeup when I've returned and recovered.

An extraordinary event is taking place this Saturday night
as “Performance DJ” DSK CHK (pronounced Disk Check) takes over the decks and
dance floor at the Vault in Mt. Clemons. DSK CHK is redefining the DJ
performance by adding stage theatrics and excitement that extends beyond the
usual call-outs and fist-pumps.
If you’ve never seen DSK CHK before, he dons the mask
from “V for Vendetta” concealing his identity so he really could be any of us.
In his crowd you’ll see a number of his fans wearing the same mask and going
nuts. DSK CHK admits wearing the mask gives him a sense that a superhero must
have thinking they are invincible while doing outrageous acts. His sounds range
from anthem glory dance tracks to real thumping shakers that will rumble the
floor. More than just your average electronic show, DSK CHK’s show will make
you feel like you are part of a movement of positive energy and spiritual
release.

Overloaded is a raw Detroit band that most people would love to find out about. However, a majority of record labels would stereotypically say that Overloaded has a style of music that has "already been done", and exhibits a talent level that has already been surpassed by backing tracks and special effects. It's shamefully typical that these same gossip vomiting fakes that destroyed the record industry in the first place consult TMZ, Rock of Love, and $800 handbags to find out what's cool.
After a short "hiatus" so each member could go and do some personal endeavors, Overloaded has returned for a special one night show with songs that will inspire nights of blowing money, endless drinking, spousal prostitution and showing once again that it's not about the glitz and the fame, it's about throwing your fist in the air and banging your head until it falls off!
Show starts at 9:15 with supporting acts Hazard Head, New Day Revolution and another one time reunion show from Dangerous Pursuit. Dust off that denim, rip up those jeans, and get to The Token Lounge Friday night.
This Saturday a special concert is taking place at Air Time Trampoline & Game Park in Troy. Up and coming rap artist Drew32 will be taking the stage and putting on his rap antics that have featured him spots on tour with the likes of Kendrick Lamar. I’ve seen Drew32 preform a few times over the past couple years and the kid know how to bring it. His video “I Am King” has been featured prominently on MTV2 and he continues to up his game with each live show. The show will also feature Grammy award winning DJ Head who was the original DJ for Eminem. In addition, DJ Head has spun with D12 and even had a role in the movie 8 Mile playing the Battle DJ. Support local hip hop and see this great show at place that’s a little different than your regular concert venue. It is an all ages show that starts at 9pm and tickets are $10.
Alt/rockers Redlight
King are co-headlining Live Nation’s
“Ones To Watch” tour which kicked off August 1st. The tour that
has featured such up and comers as Kaiser Chiefs and Atlas Genius will come
through Detroit on August 23rd with Redlight King taking the headline
spot that night. It’s fitting that the band will headline as Detroit is
basically a hometown show as the band hails from Hamilton, ONT.
Redlight King made their mark with their debut release of Something
For The Pain back in 2011, landing them:
·#3 on
Billboard’s Heatseeker chart
·#10 on
iTunes Rock album chart
·13th
most played song at Alternative Radio with their reimagined version of Neil
Young’s classic, “Old Man”
·Performances on
Conan and The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno
In 2012, Redlight King
released the scorching rock anthem, “Bullet In My Hand,” landing at the
top of the rock radio charts, while their song “Comeback” was featured on
Avengers Assemble the musical companion to the mega-hit film
THE AVENGERS.
Live, Redlight King caught the attention of fans
and critics alike with their incendiary live performance and anthemic
songs. They’ve toured with AWOLnation, Shinedown and took the festival
world by storm last year performing at Carolina Rebellion, Rock on The Range,
Rocklahoma!, Summerfest and Uproar.
Redlight King’s
new single, “Born To Rise” immediately shot up the iTunes Rock Charts, hitting
#6 within hours of being released. At the core of Redlight King,
frontman/songwriter Mark Kasprzyk (aka ‘Kaz’) is first and foremost a
storyteller and has a knack for writing songs that hit a nerve and resonate with
the band’s hardcore fan base. On their sophomore album, Irons In The
Fire (releasing September 10th) the sound is grittier, the
guitars crunchier and the songs razor-sharp, full of angst and rebellion but
always with a hint of redemption. Redlight King again enlisted the
producing team of Wally Gagel & Xandy Barry but this time Kaz also
co-produced and painted the album’s cover.
Live Nation is bringing around their “Ones to Watch” tour by the Shelter this Friday with 3 great new artists. First up is Big B from Vegas. Big B’s music is a mix of hip hop and rock with a reggae flair which you can find on his latest album Fools Gold. The album features guest spots by the Dirty Heads, as well as Slightly Stoopid, and members of NOFX and Pennywise.
Next up are the co-headliners, Icon for Hire from Decatur, IL. Icon for Hire are comprised of Ariel (vocals), Shawn Jump (guitar) and Adam Kronshagen (drums). They are signed with Tooth & Nail Records and play hard-edged rock and punk. For the past 5 years they have been touring across the Mid-West establishing a solid fan base. Icon for Hire is recording their debut record this fall with famed producer Aaron Sprinkle whose previous work includes Anberlin and The Almost.
The other headliner of the show is Redlight King who has performed recently on both Conan and The Tonight Show. In 2012 Redlight King released their debut “Bullet in my Hand” which was strong on rock radio charts and featured the song “Comeback” from the Avengers Assemble album a companion to the movie The Avengers.

With these 3 artists, the show promises a diverse and energetic night guaranteeing you’ll have that “I was there before they broke big time” story. Be sure to show up early as things will get noisy around 7pm.
Join Us This Friday August 23rd and Welcome New Zealand's ASKEW to Detroit
International Artist Descends Upon Detroit to Create an Entirely New Body of Work in Eastern Market
RSVP to the Facebook event for updates on ASKEW's visit to Detroit
ASKEW ONE is recognized worldwide for his unique approach to graffiti art and remains at the forefront of the international art scene through constantly exploring new and exciting styles in a world of imitators. With over 20 years of experience and the need to reach out to the world from his home in remote New Zealand, Askew is self-taught in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, directing and editing music videos and moving image.
The Artists Reception is free and open to the public and will run from 7-10pm this Friday August 23rd at Inner State Gallery located at 1410 Gratiot Ave Detroit, MI 48207 in Eastern Market.
Opening on August 23rd at Detroit's Inner State Gallery, Entropy is ASKEW's first international solo exhibition. Through this new body of work "Entropy" further refines Askew's unique method of portraiture where the medium and portrait's subject become a metaphor for a much bigger conversation.
The portrait is the closed-system device used to represent the formation of immense entities of barely contained energy that have reached an entropic state, only moments from encountering a cataclysmic event. It is a discussion about formation, existence and more specifically the fragility of all things - our incessant quest for balance and harmony in any society, when all things eventually deteriorate or revert to a state of chaos.
"Detroit started this whole train of thought during my first visit in 2009. I think the metaphor of Entropy is throughout the world but extends to Detroit as well. The Entropy in Detroit's case was human expanse and industry. This work is optimistic though, like Detroit. It's about new beginnings." – ASKEW ONE
