FREE TICKETS: Elephant Stone @The Loving Touch

Elephant Stone
opening for The Besnard Lakes
Tuesday, November 5th, at The Loving Touch
$10, doors at 8

Send an email to motorcityblog@earthlink.net for your chance to win a pair of tickets

Elephant Stone are currently enjoying their final evening in the Netherlands wrapping up with The Black Angels in Rotterdamn. After spending over a month in Europe, Elephant Stone will set out for the US in a matter of weeks with The Besnard Lakes. This will be Elephant Stone's first trip to the West Coast in support their eponymous sophomore album.

On top of appearing with Beck at Osheaga Music and Arts Festival, Elephant Stone continued to enrich an outstanding summer of mass critical praise particularly after touring North America with both The Zombies and The Black Angels, ultimately climaxing at Austin Psych Fest. The impetus behind the buzz is, without a doubt, Elephant Stone's powerful self-titled sophomore record released earlier this year via Hidden Pony and The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Upcoming Events at Trinosophes

Upcoming events at Trinosophes
Friday, Oct. 25: Opening reception for "Limited Dictionary" A solo exhibition by Radek Szlaga
Performance by Poland's BNNT at 9 pm; free
Limited Dictionary is an exhibition by Polish artist Radek Szlaga. The multimedia exhibition is a part of a larger project Szlaga began several years ago which focuses on his family's immigration to Redford, Michigan, while he stayed in Poland. Through video, sculptural installation and drawings, the artist deals with issues of identity, separation, alienation, mythmaking, cultural difference, and fractured language in art and in everyday life. A performance by Polish "noise-bombers" BNNT begins at 9 pm. Don't miss Szlaga and BNNT at Trinosophes, right before they leave for a performance and installation at New York's Performa on November 9!
Radek Szlaga (b. 1979) lives and works in Warsaw, Poland, where he is assistant professor at the University of Arts in Poznan. He is the co-founder of the art collective PENERSTWO. Szlaga has been featured in solo and select group shows at Arsenal Gallery (Bialystok, Poland), LETO Gallery and Zachęta National Gallery of Art (both in Warsaw) Alexander Ochs Gallery (Berlin, Germany), Temporary Gallery (Cologne, Germany) Galeria Blanca Soto (Madrid, Spain), Waterside Contemporary (London, UK), Gare Saint Sauveur (Lille, France), and POSK Gallery (London, UK), among many others. Reviews of his work have appeared in Artforum and Newsweek Polska, among other publications.

BNNT are audio performances by Konrad Smolenski and Daniel Szwed, which are usually held in open public spaces of a city, or in the institutionalized spaces of galleries and festival venues. The band members travel in a van that serves them as an improvised stage where they perform in balaclavas or masks. Each performance involves a sonic maelstrom with the use of an amplified string instrument modeled on the Tomahawk missile (Konrad Smolenski) and a drum set (Daniel Szwed). This is an interdisciplinary project involving both public performance - the so-called sound bombing - and publishing activity, which the duo have run for a few years now. BNNT has appeared at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France), Manifesta 9 (Genk, Belgium), Offen auf AEG (Nuremberg, Germany), and elsewhere.
Saturday, Oct. 26: Disappears, Ritual Howls
Five years into their existence as a band Disappears have finally exhaled - following a steady run of singles, ep's, and three full lengths the band retreated to their studio at the end of 2012 to take stock of where they had been and where they wanted to go. Disappears returned fully stretched out into the void with 2013's KONE EP. Abstract and experimental, it erased any expectation's people had about what Disappears sounded like or were capable of, as well as introduced new drummer Noah Leger - a pivotal force in what was to follow. 'Era,' Disappears' fourth album in as many years, was birthed during the bleakness of the Chicago winter 2013 at Electrical Audio by now regular foil John Congleton. Insular and dark, Era sees the band refining their love of dub, minimalism and repetition into their most original and stark set yet. Decision and consequence weigh heavy on the album - both lyrically and through the bands decision to let the studio direct the final forms of the songs. Era is Disappears at their most abrasive, contemplative, and paranoid - it's the sound of the void looking back.
8 pm doors; $7.
Wednesday, Oct 30: VCVD (Frode Gjerstadt, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Stine Janvin Motland, Stale Liavik Solberg), Jason Stein/Tim Daisy Duo
Two outstanding improvised music groups in one evening! Headlining the show is VCDC, a quartet comprised of leading Norwegian improvisers and one American. Our series has often featured the talents of saxophonist Frode Gjerstad over the years, most often in his trio with young powerhouse drummer Paal Nilssen Love; he's also a member of the Brotzmann Tentet and has worked with Joe McPhee. This time he brings some fellow Norwegians that haven't been heard here yet: Stine Janvin Motland (vocals) and Ståle Liavik Solberg (drums). Fred Lonberg-Holm, Chicago's most versatile creative cellist, rounds out the group. Not only has he worked with improvised music heavy-weights like John Butcher, Peter Brotzmann, Michael Zerang, Joe McPhee, Jim O' Rourke, Peter Kowald etc., but he's also contributed to recordings and performances by Smog, Wilco, US Maple, Super Chunk, God-is-my-co-pilot and other rock notables.
Opening the show are two more of Chicago's finest improvisers, Jason Stein and Tim Daisy. Jason is one of the few people in creative music to exclusively focus on the bass clarinet. He's had an active career, with recordings on such notable labels as Delmark, Leo, Atavistic and Clean Feed; collaborators include a range of American and European notables: Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, Eric Boeren, Michael Zerang and many others. Tim Daisy is a heavily in-demand creative drummer and award winning composer who was also named one of "13 Drummers for the Future" by Downbeat magazine. He's recorded 6 records with The Vandermark 5 and is on dozens of releases with some of the premiere musicians in new music- including John Tchicai, Jeb Bishop, Fred Anderson, Dave Rempis etc.
7:30 pm doors. $10-20 donation.

Born Ruffians @The Magic Stick

Born Ruffians
with Twin Peaks, and The Hand Grenades
Wednesday, October 30th @The Magic Stick
 $10, doors at 8PM

The Ontario-based four-piece Born Ruffians released their third album, Birthmarks via Yep Roc on April 16th and Paper Bag Records in Canada. The twelve-track album was written and demoed over the past three years and was produced by Roger Leavens at Boombox Sound in Toronto.

A key ingredient to the creation of Birthmarks was a remote farmhouse in rural Ontario. The band wanted to return to the days spent writing their debut, Red, Yellow & Blue when they lived together and "whenever we had an idea we could work it out right there that moment." While some of Birthmarks was born on the farm, many of the songs were conceived long before. Luke Lalonde would write and demo constantly on his laptop, at home and on tour: Toronto, Montreal, Midland, Australia, France, Germany… everywhere. Several songs were realized during the recording process in the studio.

Wild At Heart

Getting ready for the Halloween season by planning a few events. Anne Serling, daughter of the legendary Rod Serling (of Twilight Zone fame), is going to be appearing here in Rochester and this Saturday will see b-movie director/producer Roger Corman get a special award from the Eastman Museum. I remember staying up late watching old Twilight Zone reruns with the volume low and the door closed so my parents wouldn't hear. Every Halloween would see me staying up way past my bedtime catching the annual marathon long before cable TV came around. Early on, Twilight Zoe became my favorite show, proving I had good taste as a youngster. I look forward to hear what Anne has to say on honor of her father.

I know lot of people from here will be heading to Detroit to see ICP this weekend, but this is a great chance to have some Detroiters travel to Rochester, NY to see Roger Corman. This Saturday you can see the presentation or spend a bit more for a dessert reception or a dinner before the ceremony. I heard Joe Dante will also be here also to honor him. Roger was integral to modern independent film as well as popular culture. I cannot think of anymore more influential in bringing up talent be it actors like Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper or Sandra Bullock or maybe directors like Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich or James Cameron. Think of all the Academy Awards his proteges have garnered and one wonders if some of these people would have been as successful without those big breaks. The type of system Corman fostered isn't there anymore and we are probably lesser for it. Corman directed 55 films (personal favorite include the original Little Shop Of Horrors, A Bucket Of Blood and X - The Man With X-Ray Eyes) and produced 385 others as well as bringing over numerous foreign films to the American audiences. He doesn't appear often in these parts so a trip here would be worth it. The George Eastman House will also be holding exhibits "the History of Space Photography" and "Astro-Visions"(contemporary photographs by scientists, filmmakers and artists expressing their visions of outer space). Can a Corman fan ask for anything more?

I posted early this week to give people a chance to check out a Live Twitter Chat with X-Men director Bryan Singer on Monday, October 28th at 1:30PM. You ca tweet questions with #XMEN and #ASKSINGER at @BRYANSINGER OR @XMENMOVIES. Wish I wasn't working.

I bet the Cowboy Junkies will be playing a cover of "Sweet Jane" this Sunday when they play the Ark in honor of Lou Reed who passed away Sunday. One of the most influential artists of all time, from his time with the Velvet Underground to see massive amounts of solo work, Lou was always an interesting artist. Back in college, it was the "Magic And Loss" album that got me into listening to Lou as I played that album, and the song "Walk On The Wild Side", quite a bit. From there I found his earlier work along with the Velvet Underground and I was hooked. I had always wanted to see him live but I had only seen him perform one song at the opening concert in Cleveland for the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. He came on stage with Soul Asylum backing him and alongside Iggy Pop who also did only one song. I wish he had had a few more songs. I had seen Iggy and Soul Asylum since but never had a chance to catch him live again. Still, he left a great body of work and will be remembered for a long time to come. RIP - Lou Reed.

Thomas Dolby’s Invisible Lighthouse Live Wsg Blake Leyh

Sunday, November 3 at The Royal Oak Music Theatre

GA $25 / $29 Day Of Show.  All Ages.  Doors Open at 7:00 pm

Thomas Dolby brings his film and concert The Invisible Lighthouse to the Royal Oak Music Theatre next Sunday.

The British Synth player had chart success in the 1980s with hits like ‘Windpower’, ‘Hyperactive!’
and ‘She Blinded Me With Science’.

The Invisible Lighthouse Tour sees Dolby take his latest film project on the road, and present it
to audiences as a unique theatrical experience. Combining his music and art in one breath-taking
show, the tour will focus on some of the UK’s most historic arthouse cinemas.

There is a mysterious island across the water off the East Anglian coast that, during its chequered
history, has been an airfield, a military testing ground for experimental weapons and home to the
main transmission network for the BBC World Service. On the tip of the island is a beautiful
lighthouse.

“Since I was a small child, I have fallen asleep, at night, to the soothing periodic flash of the light
on my bedroom wall.” – THOMAS DOLBY

The Devil Wears Prada Wsg The Ghost Inside, Volumes, and Texas In July

Saturday, November 2 at The Royal Oak Music Theatre

GA $20 / $23 Day Of Show.  All Ages.  Doors Open at 6:00 pm

The Devil Wears Prada come to the Royal Oak Music Theatre next Saturday night November 3 Wsg The Ghost Inside, Volumes, and Texas In July.

The Devil Wears Prada is a Christian metalcore band from Dayton, Ohio. They are currently signed to Roadrunner Records and have hit the charts on Purevolume and Myspace as a Christian Metalcore band. The band has over 6 million plays on Myspace, and they are ranked 3rd among Christian artists. They got their name from the book The Devil Wears Prada, by Lauren Weisburger. The band was formed before the release of the movie with the same name. Although the band's inspiration for their name was from the book, they believe the meaning of it is why they chose it. As stated by vocalist Mike Hranica in the band's Myspace blog:

"It's the same concept as our lyrics "emeralds hold no hope" and many many others. What we believe it to mean is that possessions don't matter at all and someday everyone will realize that this is true. When standing before God, He won't care about your sweet Prada scarf or Gucci shoes or whatever. It's a Christian reasoning for the name, we didn't name it to attempt at being fashionable or whatever."

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS

"Working This Job"
It seems a paradox that while the Drive-By Truckers’ sound is so unique; it is still part of a greater and larger family. Some of the other greats - particularly in the South - were spawned from their culture, while others came from the deeper rootstock of the southern landscape itself. Of course in the long run the landscape has a significant say in what kind of culture develops; it’s all tangled together, all connected, and everything shares bits and strands of those fragments, again like a pastiche of random and beautiful genomes. Each of the three vocalists - Cooley, Patterson, Shonna - is distinct; each aches in its own way with sometimes gravelly and other times smooth sweet wistful broken-glass hurt and yearning and reluctant. Patterson’s songs, of course are almost always willing, in the great Southern tradition, to take on the Man - or anyone else - as are Cooley’s, when the cause is big and just.

Their sound - so distinctly theirs - comes nonetheless from history and the past. It’s all a big tangled beautiful mess, and it all comes out of Muscle Shoals, where, as Patterson’s father, legendary bassist David Hood, astutely notes, the South once did something right with respect to race relations, once-upon-a-time, and when it most mattered.
OLD 97'S

"Dance With Me"

Although they became one of the most enduring bands in the alternative country-rock catalog, Old 97′s drew inspiration from a broad range of genres, including the twangy stomp of cowpunk and the melodies of power pop. Formed in 1993 by frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond, the group spent the bulk of the decade posed on the brink of mainstream success, issuing albums that often drew warm reviews but never yielded a substantial hit. Old 97′s tightened their sound as the decade drew to a close, retaining their bar-band vigor while introducing a stronger pop/rock sound on albums like Too Far to Care and Satellite Rides. Miller also mounted a solo career in the early 2000s, but the band remained together nonetheless, continuing to release material with their original lineup intact into the following decade.

Nashville-based musician Matt Wertz will be playing a show in Ann Arbor to celebrate the release of his new album, Heatwave, at The Ark on November 1st

Matt's latest release, Heatwave, captures an era in music inspired by the rock heroes of the 80s; Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, Don Henley, Bryan Adams, etc.  Matt has set out to pay homage to the musicians he grew up listening to by creating Heatwave, a collection of songs boasting crisp drum beats and jangly guitar solos, along with the characteristically smooth vocals that fans have come to expect of Wertz.  Originally from Liberty, MO, Matt has spent the past 12 years pursuing his music career in Nashville, TN.

After having released several albums on major labels including Universal Republic and Nettwerk Records, Matt is now independently releasing Heatwave on his own label, Handwritten Records.  Keeping with the 80s influence Heatwave has been released as a limited cassette run with a Walkman players signed by Matt!  The album, which was released on August 27th, is also be available on vinyl, CD, and at all digital retailers.
