UPCOMING (Monday, July 18): Grammy Nominated EMILY KING at the Shelter in Detroit



Emily King is a Grammy-nominated R&B/Soul singer and songwriter from NYC. Her first release came in 2007 with her album “East Side Story”, as a result of that she was nominated for the Best Contemporary R&B Album at The Grammys. Already in her short career, Emily has seen support from Maroon 5, John Legend, Emeli Sande, and Justin Timberlake and has toured with acts such as John Legend, Alicia Keys, Floetry, NAS, and Erykah Badu. She will be joining the Alabama Shakes on tour this summer in addition to her own headlining dates.   

King recently released the deluxe version of her critically acclaimed 2015 EP ’The Switch’,
featuring new songs. 
  
Emily King has a local headlining gig at the Shelter in Detroit on Monday, July 16.
 Maroon 5 keyboardist PJ Morton will be the opening act.

SHOW REVIEW & INTERVIEW: Skating Polly at Small's Bar In Hamtramck (with video footage and photos)

 
Do you remember how you spent most of your adolescence? Skating Polly, currently hailing from Tacoma Washington, have spent most of theirs making music on and off the stage.
 
For the last seven years, the two piece stepsister duo have released four full length albums as well as playing live extensively here in the states and abroad. They mingle with their friends in Babes In Toyland, X, and Kate Nash on stage and off and have no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
 
I caught up with 16 year old Kelli Mayo and 20 year old Peyton Bighorse before their set at Small's in Hamtramck for a chat. We discussed their music videos, school, touring, meeting John Lydon, and much more. Check it out (in two parts) below...
 
 
 
 
I also picked the ladies brains in regards to their Detroit music preferences. Here are the results....
 
   
 
The Detroit area was last blessed with Skating Polly's presence back in 2013. Since then, the band has released two full length albums, including the latest 2016 release entitled "The Big Fit" and a vinyl only split single. The band has progressed greatly in the last few years with their childlike, yet mature and poetic lyrics, melodic arrangements, and an eclectic array of songs that vary in style from riot grrrl to piano-based indie pop.
 
Taking the stage in mismatched socks Skating Polly opened with the track "Ugly" which was the song that I discovered the band through when I saw the music video for it last year. The band is raw and loud live. They are reminiscent of the early 90's grunge alt-rock sound that was the soundtrack of my own youth back in the day. 
 
 
 
Their set was tight and their songs were belted out with passion that was often loudly melodic with bellowing vocals that come from somewhere deep in their musically talented guts.
 
 
Both Kelli and Peyton switched off instruments during their set and saw Kelli playing the guitar/bass hybrid basitar, drums, guitar, as well as keyboards. Peyton took on the drums and guitar.
 
 
  
At one point during the song "Oddie Moore" Kelli had blood flying alongside her drumsticks as she nicked her thumb on the drums. She played through the song and others following. A relief from heavy drumming was soon replaced when Kelli announced "Now it's time for quiet songs" as she got behind the keyboards for the song "Cosmetic Skull" as Peyton took over drumming duties.
 
 
 
 
The band also took on a cover of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" giving it the bands signature "Ugly Pop" sound. The bands set was hyped up throughout by a very enthusiastic fan who saw the band when they opened for Emily Wells at the Magic Stick back in 2013. He was there for Ms. Wells, but was won over by Skating Polly and hasn't looked back since. He waited three years for their return and was once again blown away at this evenings set. His projected vocal statements reflected what most everyone in the crowd was thinking, which basically amounted to how great the band was. 
 
 

 

  
After their set Kelli applied some Band-Aids to her live show battle wounded thumb and the band met with fans. They were happy to talk, take pictures, and sign their albums for all those that desired. Though most would have been content with just a signature, the girls further adorned their albums with personal artwork. 
 
 
 
 
 
There's just not enough bands like Skating Polly out there nowadays. Though most media outlets may take special note of the members age and gender, it's probably just a reaction to hearing such great music and finding out who is behind it. Music has no limits and, even if it did, Skating Polly isn't a band that would be afraid to break them.

The Wyandotte Street Art Fair starts on Wednesday, July 13 and runs through Saturday, July 16.

The Wyandotte Street Art Fair, is now in its 55th year. There are approximately 300 artists and craftspeople participating. Twenty-five food and beverage concessions provide a wide variety of delicious cuisine to satisfy all visitors and area merchants will also convert sidewalks into a giant outdoor market featuring once-a-year values on quality merchandise.

The fair will be located along Biddle Avenue between Eureka and Oak Streets in downtown Wyandotte.

Art Fair hours for all days are: 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

UPCOMING (July 14-17): The 24th Annual Concert Of Colors in Detroit



The Concert of Colors is Metro Detroit’s free annual diversity-themed music festival. It is produced by the Arab American National Museum with partners Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, ACCESS, Midtown Detroit Inc. and University of Michigan – Detroit Center. The goal of this five-day festival is uniting metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups by presenting musical acts from around the world. Over its 23-year history, the festival has become a beloved highlight of metro Detroit’s summer festival season, and one of the few free-admission music festivals remaining locally.

All performances are free and open to the public.
All venues are on or near Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit.

Singer-songwriter and actress DANA FUCHS will be bringing her full band electric blues rock show to Callahan's Music Hall in Auburn Hills on Thursday, July 14. 

Dana Fuchs is a singer-songwriter and actress based in Harlem, New York. She continues to celebrate a versatile career that embraces music, theatre, and film. Dana most famously starred as rock singer "Sadie" in Julie Taymor’s Beatles-based musical romantic-drama, “Across The Universe”, and played Janis Joplin in Randall Myler’s off-Broadway musical “Love, Janis”. She fronts the Dana Fuchs Band, a soulful rock group continuously touring throughout Europe and the United States. TOMORROW (Thur. July 7): The Dead & Company at DTE Music Theatre in Clarkston



Following the tremendous success of the band’s 2015 tour, Dead & Company is bringing its highly-anticipated 2016 tour to DTE Energy Music Theatre on Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m.

Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir; singer/guitarist John Mayer; Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge; and “Fare Thee Well” and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti will perform two sets of music drawing from the Dead’s historic catalog of songs.

After an overwhelming show of public support last year -- and similar to many public placemaking projects -- Murals In The Market will again back their “Adopt A Mural” program. Local businesses and arts supporters will have a chance to sponsor an individual mural from their favorite artist and be commemorated with a special plaque. In addition, Murals In The Market will also host dozens of events curated by participating artists including multiple art exhibitions, installations, live music, children’s workshops, community events, artists talks and more all throughout the Eastern Market District. All events will be free and open to the public as these local and international artists extend the market’s vibrant history of public murals by adding new large scale work that will embody the spirit of Detroit and the Market’s rich heritage.

Building upon the resounding success of last year’s inaugural festival, Murals In The Market will continue to help expand Eastern Market’s walkable footprint, giving visitors a look into businesses and areas often unseen and underutilized in the Eastern Market, and by adding to the 75 public murals that are strategically placed through the Eastern Market District. Local and national sponsor will help make 2016 one of the best yet, as presenting sponsors, 1xRUN, Eastern Market Corporation and Knight Foundation will be joined by Behr, New Belgium, Montana Cans, Brooklyn Outdoor, Red Bull House of Art, Metrotimes, Aptemal, Faygo, Slow Roll, Paxahau, Recycle Here!, Thinkspace Gallery, Detroit Wick, Feet On The Street and Inner State Gallery. House paint and spray paint for Murals In The Market will be provided by industry leaders Behr and Montana Cans, helping artists create outdoor works of art that will stand the test of time.

Public art has long been an integral part of the Eastern Market district and experience.  The 2016 Murals In The Market festival will expand on 40+ years of large scale public murals by bringing a new batch of world class local and international artists to add exciting new works throughout the market. Artists from as far away as Australia, Singapore and Paris will join a diverse group of Detroit based artists that have made an impact on the public art scene. Once again Murals In The Market will continue to enhance the market experience and the district’s transformation into a must-see destination for arts -- as well as food -- in Detroit.

Over the past 5 years 1xRUN and the company's fine art gallery Inner State, have curated and produced over 75 murals in Eastern Market alone, with more than 100 murals throughout the City of Detroit.  With the creation of these murals, each area has seen a significant visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood as well as increased traffic, additional economic development and increased safety.

In addition to creating new murals, the market will also host a series of events including  discussion panels with culturally significant photographers & artists, a cultural tour with Detroit’s famous Slow Roll bike tour, art exhibitions, an Eastern Market block party, as well as nighttime activities coinciding the neighborhood's yearly Eastern Market After Dark on September 22nd.
