Rhythm Corps + Sponge wsg The Beggars - ROMT

This photo series is dedicated to my Friend, Joe Grassi, who passed away too young.

It was Joe that originally introduced me to Rhythm Corps back in the late 80's when we were both students at Cousino High School in Warren, MI and were aspiring DJ's in the schools radio station, WPHS.  My first concerts were with Joe seeing Rhythm Corps at such iconic Detroit venues as The Ritz...and then many a time afterwards at any festival or college bar we could attend.  Anytime I hear Fathers Footsteps, Revolution Man, Broken Halo's, Satellites, or any of their other songs, Joe comes to mind.

So much so that on Saturday night after capturing The Beggars fantastic opening performance, as Michael Persh was in the middle of their 2nd song, and I had him dead-center in my viewfinder, I was suddenly and unexpectedly overcome with a flood of memories and emotions from all our years of Friendship and just lost it.  Eyes filled with tears...I couldn't see clearly...and it took my breath away.  All I could do was just honor the moment, the memories, and the music.  I cleared my eyes and continued to shoot...capturing some of my all-time favorite images of any musical group I have ever shot in my 10+ year career.

So, to Joe, I miss you old Friend.  You should have been there with me singing along to every single one of those songs just like the old days instead of leaving so soon.  It wasn't the same, but, I will have to say I definitely felt your presence there. Thank you for all the memories that I can look back on and cherish.

As for the performances by The Beggars, Rhythm Corps and Sponge,... simply put, The Beggars killed it with their energetic performance, Rhythm Corps turned in what I would qualify as one of their BEST performances that I have ever seen without missing a step, and Vinnie and the boys of Sponge continue to hold up the mantle of Detroit Rock, always putting on a great show.

Thank you to Dana Forrester for the last minute photo credentials.  It is always a pleasure working with you and helping promote our mutual love of Detroit music!

TONIGHT - 1-800-band @ UFO factory Friday 11/4

UFO Factory on Friday, 11/4, with Cheetahs, Jeanies, and Primitv Parts,

in support of our recently released album, High Beams, on Almost Ready Records

Almost Ready Records announces the release of High Beams, the new LP by New York City rockers 1-800-BAND.

Playing loose but well-crafted songs built on alarm-clock-radio hooks, 1-800-BAND delve into the darkest corners of the rock'n'roll story, drawing from 99-cent power pop, country weepers, pub rock, and glam, with a tinge of heartland rock lightening the sky. New LP High Beams gleams with the aural reflections of bands such as Blue Northern, the Jacobites, Dwight Twilley, Pretenders, late Kinks, Tom Petty, and Elliott Murphy. Light bleeds through the dusk: You're living in the city, skint, close to the bone, wondering if she still cares—but you've got your mates, your good-fitting denim, and enough for an egg sand at the donut shop: you might miss that hangover if you stay awake long enough, and there's always your pride, no matter how shredded.

Consequence of Sound has described the co-ed quartet's songs as "an amalgamation of rock-and-roll punch and Tom Petty–esque power pop [that] never skimps on the fun." Brooklyn Vegan says they play "hooky, ringing, revved up and distinctly American power pop," and CMJ has called them "stellar." The Big Takeover cites High Beams as "sophisticated and deftly crafted . . . embellished with traces of par excellence Stones and Springsteen—without succumbing to any cloying throwback maneuvers," and underground comix-and-music zine Roctober describes the music as "blue collar American glam pop magic." Proclaims USA Today, "I'm on board."

High Beams was produced by Mitch Easter at Fidelitorium Recordings. Easter, a founding member of the seminal jangle-pop band Let's Active, has engineered and mixed albums by Ex Hex, Dinosaur Jr., Wilco, R.E.M., Pylon, and many more. High Beams was mastered by Carl Saff (Jack Name, Screaming Females, Guided By Voices). The LP follows a self-titled LP, the EP Diver Blue, and a split 7" with Snakes.

Almost Ready Records, home to releases by Nobunny, Big Dipper, and Liquor Store, has High Beams available as a limited LP in black vinyl, on CD, and as a digital download.

1-800-BAND—front man/guitarist Al Huckabee, keyboardist/vocalist Polly Watson, bassist Robbie Kongress, and drummer Steve McGuirl—will be playing a series of dates in November in continued support of Almost Ready's release of High Beams. All dates below.

Lawrence Street Gallery presents a special event, "The Pat & Kinka Show."

Karen (Kinka) Snow paints to discover her inner being. Each painting is an abstract version of her journey in finding out who she really is. Some of her paintings are very emotional and complex while others are simple and stark. Each painting is just one of the stepping stones she uses in her journey to self-discovery.

Patricia Simpson realized her artistic passion during her childhood in Saginaw, MI.  Urged to take a more practical life path, she earned a Masters of Arts degree in teaching from Wayne State University.  It was at WSU that she was introduced to ceramics, which quickly became her constant form of creative expression.  Throughout a 30-year career in education, she continued to make the time to pursue her true passion.  Pat's style developed into a unique blending of African, Australian and Asian cultures.  Be it ceramic or painting, each piece is one of a kind.  She now devotes 100% of her time to her art from her Detroit studio.  She also participates in programs which mentor youth through art.

GusGus is one of the most sought after electronic acts out of Iceland, with a career spanning for over 20 years, they have managed to stay relevant in the current electronic music scene. A rotating cast of members, the current line up consists of two founding members: Biggi Veiran and Daníel Ágúst along with Icelandic indie prodigy Högni Egilsson.
GusGus was initially formed in 1995 as a film/music collective. This spawned a short film and a critically acclaimed best-selling album in Iceland.

After striking a deal with 4AD in 1996 they became one of the most sought after electronic music acts out of Iceland. With the release of Polydistortion (4AD/Warner) in 1997, GusGus solidified their worldwide status to sold-out shows all over the world

GusGus has had a span of nearly two decades in which they have done nearly every style of electronic influenced music. From techno to trip-hop, from house to progressive house/trance to pop, this collective has made each style their own.

The current line up consists of founding members: Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst along with Icelandic indie prodigy Högni Egilsson (also a member of indie band Hjaltalín)

With their latest release "Mexico", GusGus once again present the audience with magical soundscapes that go from synth-pop "Obnoxiously Sexual" to deep techno "Mexico" to progressive house "Airwaves" and the chart topping stomper "Crossfade". The combination of the vocal artistry of Daníel Ágúst and the raspy melodic voice of Högni surrounded by mesmerizing electronics, haunting grooves, with subtle string and brass arrangements blending in, creates a very unique and powerful sound produced by mastermind Biggi Veira which has been leaving audiences clamoring for more.

Currently the band is recording their 10th album, to be released in 2016.
