SHOW REVIEW: Dana Fuchs at Callahan's Music Hall in Auburn Hills (W/Photos and Video)

Dubbed the Barefoot & Pregnant Tour Dana Fuchs made her first Michigan appearance since her state debut back in 2008. This past Thursday Dana Fuchs would make her return to play Callahan's Music Hall in Auburn Hills. This time she not only brought a full band but also a child within herself that is due in September, hence the name of the tour.

You would be mistaken if you thought being pregnant would slow Dana down and it only took the first song of the night "Almost Home" to prove just that. Dana followed the opening song with the hard hitting "Bliss Avenue" off her album titled the same. The ride was just beginning and she already had the full attention of the near capacity Thursday night crowd at Callahan's Music Hall.

For the next 90+ minutes the crowd was treated to Dana and the band delivering their hard edged blues, rock, and country toned music. Dana is a very passionate singer and has a voice that demands you to pay attention. Dana has often been told she evokes Janis Joplin with her stage presence and vocal style and it's easy to see why when you see her perform. Don't even try to look away because she will pull you in. Dana has lived quite the life and her songs often have biographical truths behind them. Her honesty won the crowd over and she only asked that they give her as much back as she gave them from the stage.

Dana was backed by her full band for this show which included her longtime songwriting partner Jon Diamond on guitar, Craig Dreyer on keyboards, saxophone, and backing vocals, Tony Mason on drums, and fill in bass player Andy Hess who has played with the likes of Gov't Mule and The Black Crowes.

The band was exceptional and guitarist Jon Diamond dished out guitar licks and solos with ease all night long. Craig Dreyer was truly a stand out with all his band duties and also showed off his talent with solos on the keyboards and saxophone, and bassist Andy Hess and drummer Tony Mason accompanied the music and band perfectly. You could not have asked for a better band to back Dana for the evening. The band contributed so much to the atmosphere of the evening.

The band had a set list, but strayed from it often. Besides original songs the band also covered classic artists such as Johnny Cash with "Ring Of Fire" and The Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends". The later song was a interesting choice due to the fact that Dana is well known for starring and singing some fantastic versions of Beatles songs in the 2007 film "Across The Universe" and the Beatles tune chosen for the night was one that another cast member sang in the film.

Dana interacted with the audience on a personal basis and the audience appreciated the connection. She has a witty sense of humor which made for a night of both music and laughs. At times Dana and the band were rocking hard and at other times they would slow it down for a ballad. One such song was the emotional "So Hard To Move" which was a song about her late brother Don.

Dana gave much love to her band members and gave introductions to each throughout the night. Song after song Dana Fuchs created a story in song and the audience gave back what was given to them. Audience members were eventually drawn out of their chairs and out from behind their tables to gather in front of the stage to dance. Callahan's Music Hall was full of energy and Dana and the band left everyone feeling connected and pleased.

It was obvious Dana Fuchs pleased her fans and made many new ones. Many had the chance to tell Dana herself as she and the band mingled with the crowd after their set.

Many here in the Detroit area are looking forward to a return visit from Dana, but for now the quick Dana Fuchs fix can be had by visiting her website at http://danafuchs.com.

SHOW REVIEW: Garbage At The Fillmore in Detroit

The last time I saw the band Garbage live was 1998 at the very same venue (then called the State Theatre) that I witnessed them live this past Saturday evening.

I've been a steady listener of the band over the years who dominated the alternative rock airwaves in the 90's and the band still has the musical abilities and edge that they first started putting out over two decades ago. The music industry has changed much over the years, but Garbage has remained consistent. Take this from a guy who was there in the beginning.

The stage lights stayed off for the bands first song of the set "Sometimes", which also happens to be the first song of the bands new album 'Strange Little Birds'. It was perfect for the atmosphere, but not so great for capturing photos. But that would soon change as the lights were turned up as well as the music. The band broke into fan favorites “I Think I’m Paranoid” and "Stupid Girl" in succession. Yes folks...the great music of the 90's lives on and I couldn't be happier.

The band lineup for the evening consisted of vocalist Shirley Manson, guitarists Steve Marker and Duke Erickson, touring bassist Eric Avery (formerly of Janes Addiction), and Matt Walker (from Morrissey and Smashing Pumpkins) who filled in for Butch Vig on drums due to Butch's illness
and his doctors orders not to travel.

The band's set consisted of a wide variety of material from all six of their full length albums. Material off of 'Absolute Garbage' and 'beautifulgarbage' got the least play with only one track from each of them played live during their set and the bands self titled 'Garbage' saw the highest with six.

The Fillmore had a great turnout and the crowd was very pleased and let the band know it with screams, hand claps, and the light of their cell phones as they captured some of their favorite songs.
The band stayed energetic with Shirley, in a free flowing dress, pacing with a purpose all over the stage and guitarists Steve Marker and Duke Erickson adding sweeping motions and movement to their playing that makes for a great visual live music experience.

The band only had one hiccup in the set which came in the first minute of “Only Happy When it Rains”. I believe it was due to an error on the part of fill in drummer Matt Walker as Shirley was talking to him right after mishap. The band had a good laugh about it and restarted the song from the very beginning and had the majority of the crowd singing along to the chorus.

Shirley spoke to the crowd quite often between songs. I love Shirley's accent, but I found myself missing a lot of words coming from her mouth. She spoke of her support of the LGBT community during one break and her belief of accepting all people for who they are.

Popular hits “Push It” and “Vow” were saved for the end of the regular set and encores included "Supervixen" and "#1 Crush" off the bands 1995 debut album and the bands high
energy song "Why Do You Love Me?” finished the set.

A great set list and evening all around. My 18 year break from seeing Garbage live felt like a
Back To The Future trip that I can easily see myself taking again.

Not to be missed! Maker Faire Detroit 30-31 July

One of the best summer events in Detroit, check out our previous coverage of the Maker Faire, then get on out there for some super-mecha-nerdy fun!

July 30-31, 2016

Maker Faire® is like a three-ring circus of innovation. Robotics, electronics, rockets, food, music, fashion, science — if somebody makes it, we’ll find a place for it at Maker Faire® Detroit. This is, without doubt, one of the most unusual and mind-boggling events to ever find a home in Detroit. Maker Faire® is a place where the DIY mindset can run wild. Inspiring and ingenious, with more than a little humor mixed in, this eye-popping gathering is one of the country’s smartest and most extraordinary family-friendly events. Hundreds of exhibiting makers are expected to participate, offering dozens of demonstrations and hands-on workshops for anyone — child or adult — who still has a sense of adventure. Only at the home of innovation, The Henry Ford.

NEW! For the seventh annual event, the giant fighting robot from Team USA comes to life as MegaBots heads to Maker Faire® Detroit to battle it out. A shuttle service sponsored by the University  of Michigan-Dearborn will also be available at its Fairlane campus at 19000 Hubbard Dr. in Dearborn.

Add The Magical History Tour: A Beatles Memorabilia Exhibition for an additional $5.00.

UPCOMING (July 21): MAGDA All Night Long - Free at TV Lounge

Magda makes her way back to Detroit for a FREE show on Thursday, July 21st at TV Lounge.

Doors open at 9pm. 21+ welcome.

TV Lounge - 2548 Grand River - Detroit

Magda's realm as an artist spans far beyond the typical role played by DJs and producers. With an open mind, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right: from producing high-quality Tequila to tech collaborations, fashion and art, Magda has created a truly unique, multifaceted expression of herself.

Magda's realm as an artist spans far beyond the typical role played by DJs and producers. With an open mind, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right: from producing high-quality Tequila to tech collaborations, fashion and art, Magda has created a truly unique, multifaceted expression of herself.

Born in Poland and raised in Detroit, Magda has soaked up the various characteristics of her surroundings, resulting in a widely-cultured perspective, tuned to see beauty and potential in the most derelict and depressed of places. As a teenager partying in Detroit, it wasn't long until Magda was fully immersed in the city's underground scene. In 1998, she was dropped straight into the deep end; she joined Minus and began touring the world as Richie Hawtin's opening DJ. Whilst this was a perfect platform for Magda to show off her talents and develop a fanbase, it brought with it the constraints of an established reputation. Magda was defined as a DJ under the Minus umbrella, but since has forged her own path.

Magda's touring schedule is amongst the most high-profile and demanding around, with regular bookings at many of the world's very best house/techno clubs and festivals. She's proved herself as a consistent, adventurous and top-quality performer, with a knack for bringing tracks together in unexpected ways. As well as notable accolades such as a BBC 1 Essential Mix and playing at Timewarp's live streamed 20th anniversary, Magda has been behind some stand-out commercial mixes. 'She's A Dancing Machine', released in 2006 through Hawtin's label, was truly seminal. It intricately layered 70 tracks into 16 sections and displayed an almost unprecedented level of energy for a minimal DJ mix. She was later invited to record a mix for Fabric esteemed CD series, and adopted a similar patchwork approach to brilliant effect. Her latest, two-disc mix compilation, out through the Balance series in February, gives equal measure to the experimental and club-focused aspects of her DJing. Incorporating music from the likes of Shackleton, Murat Tepeli and Marcel Dettmann, Magda takes the listener on a thrillingly unpredictable listen.

Though solo Magda releases are relatively rare, there's no doubt her ability extends beyond the booth to the studio. In the fall of 2010, Magda revealed her debut on Minus, 'From The Fallen Page'. It combined her love for Italian horror composition, Detroit techno futurism and straight-forward dancefloor functionality into a quality body of work that still sounds fresh today. She has also remixed the likes of Plastikman and Depeche Mode.

Collaboration has become a vital part of Magda's studio work. Cornerbred is the project she shares with partner Daniela Huerta. Offering a respite from normal DJ sets, it revels in avant-garde and real-life concepts, utilising a broad sound pallet and lending itself to live performance. The pair have recorded mixes on Soundcloud and sites such as Oki-ni, the hour-long sessions covering a wide array of styles, sounds and periods, from 80s electro to more atonal works. DTR (Define The Relationship) is Magda's edits venture with Nyma, dedicated to 'reshaping, reintroducing and reviving early influences as a homage to the past, present and future'. So far, LL Cool J, Chaka Khan and Jody Watley have been under the DTR microscope with fascinating results.

On top of all this, Magda has proved herself as a label boss, running the long-standing and successful Items & Things imprint with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce. The label thrives on the off-kilter and the uncommon, unearthing new artists and sounds that push boundaries. Thirty releases in and Items & Things proudly count the likes of Jimmy Edgar and Rework amongst its roster.

With a new event series and much more in the works, 2015 is an exciting year for Magda and her fans. Her Maria Pascuala Tequila brand and design work also continue to open new avenues, each of them explored with the stamp of quality Magda has come to represent.

PHOTOS/REVIEW: John Carpenter Live Retrospective at the Masonic Temple

"The name's Plissken!" prompted a packed house at the Masonic Temple to erupt in cheers on Friday night after screening John Carpenter's Escape from New York.  Carpenter’s low-budget cult classic set the standard for its time and, like many in the room, it was exciting to see this on a big screen with a full audience for the first time.

The screening was simply the opening act, however, for Carpenter’s first ever live music tour, a celebration and performance of his work.  The band included Carpenter’s son and godson, who also worked on his debut studio albums, Lost Themes/Lost Themes II, released on Sacred Bones Records.  The music of Lost Themes appeared intermittently in the set list, as the band performed their way through cinematic history.

“I’m John Carpenter”, he announced, as if any introduction was needed, before presenting music from all of his seminal works.  Without stopping we traversed through every fan favorite, from The Fog, They Live, EFNY, and of course, Halloween, etc. live against a backdrop of film scenes, light projections and the occasional fog.  More like an exhibition than a concert, this rare opportunity was a fan’s dream come true.

••• ABOUT JOHN CARPENTER •••

2016 will host the first ever John Carpenter tour and in true Carpenter spirit, a sequel to Lost Themes: Lost Themes II. The follow-up brings quite a few noticeable changes to the process, which result in an even more cohesive record. Lost Themes’ cowriters Cody Carpenter (John’s son) and Daniel Davies (John’s godson) both returned. Cody was recently also heard as a composer for Showtime's Masters of Horror series (Cigarette Burns and Pro-Life), and NBC's Zoo. Davies was a composer for NBC’s Zoo, as well as the motion picture Condemned. All three brought in sketches and worked together in the same city, a luxury they weren’t afforded on the first Lost Themes. The result was a more focused effort, one that was completed on a compressed schedule — not unlike Carpenter’s classic, notoriously low-budget early films.

The musical world of Lost Themes II is also a wider one than that of its predecessor. More electric and acoustic guitar help flesh out the songs, still driven by Carpenter’s trademark minimal synth. This manifests itself brilliantly in songs like lead single “Distant Dream,” which hitches a familiar Carpenterian beat to an expressive drum performance and rides it to a thrilling conclusion. The eerie “Angel’s Asylum” lets an ethereal synth line command the first three-quarters of the song, before turning over the melody to an acoustic guitar, and “Virtual Survivor” delivers a blast of the sci-fi menace that characterized his great scores for films like Assault on Precinct 13 and They Live. Lost Themes II delivers eleven compelling new tracks for which fans can continue to score the movies in their minds.

Keep your eyes peeled for John and his co-writers to hit the road next year performing both lost and newly found themes, in addition to retrospective work from Mr. Carpenter’s multi-generational career. Lost Themes II will be released on April 1st, 2016 on Sacred Bones Records. Long live the Horror Master.
