Gig : New Model Army @ The Blind Pig, Ann Arbor; 22/9

New Model Army U.S. tour hits Ann Arbor this September

Twenty nine years and eleven albums later, Britain’s New Model Army continue their musical excursion with a new album and worldwide tour that lands in Ann Arbor on Sept. 22.
New Model Army are a legendary global underground cult band. Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980, their beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul, Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times. Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful journey. They have been massively influential in ‘post-punk’, ‘folk-rock’, ‘politico-rock’, ‘goth’, ‘metal’ and all kinds of musical sub-cultures but, like Groucho Marx, they have steadfastly refused to belong to any club that would have them as members.
Without ever having had a Top 20 hit in any country in their 29 year history, New Model Army have album sales in the millions, have attracted some of the biggest producers on the planet (Glyn Johns, Tom Dowd, Andy Wallace, Bob Clearmountain,) and built up an almost religious devotion amongst fans.

In September this year they will release their eleventh studio album entitled 'Today Is A Good Day'. Mostly written last autumn in the wake of the Wall Street Collapse (an event celebrated in the white-hot opening title track). The album tour will begin with a month in North America (where the band have an eventful history), continue through Europe until Christmas and on into Spring 2010.

The Ann Arbor show is on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Blind Pig located at 208 S. First Street , 734-996-8555 . Doors are at 9pm 18 + and tickets are $10 advance and $12 at the door. Opening the show are local rockers The Terrible Twos and the maximum cosmic punk of Mazinga.

BACK STORY:
"This chance meeting with Jeff Howitt had turned into a thing of great
beauty-a tremendous artistic experience deeply rooted in my own personal
geography and brought to bloom through the robust energy and intelligence
of these young musicians out of the old bohemian tradition." wrote John
Sinclair for the liner notes of
TEARING DOWN THE SHRINE
OF TRUTH AND BEAUTY;
his collaboration with PINKEYE last summer.
The sessions were released through LOCO GNOSIS on Sinclair's 67th
Birthday Party held at THE BOHOUSE where he was named Poet-In-Residence
and given a key so he has an actual room of his own to live in when he is
in the United States.

"Fast forward 40 years and here I am again, in the same neighborhood with
exactly the same sort of people I'd grown up with at the(Detroit
Artist's)Workshop and doing the exact same thing!"

With that sentiment Sinclair asked Howitt to help him design an event for
"May 1st and/or 2nd". Howitt(whose inaugural event for LOCO GNOSIS at the
Masonic Temple in 2006 featured 12 bands on 2 stages volleying sets for 8
hours of unbroken music)immediately knew it had to run 2 days. Howitt
recruited band mates Jason Worden and Frank Stephens and MAY DAYS started
to take shape.
They invited the Detroit Artists Workshop and Detroit Life
to help keep one eye on lineage, another on friendship and the third on
the spirit of this city and how it reflects in it's people and culture.

In A Wounded State ~ Photography by Stefan Peterson

Yes we are getting ready for the Blowout and MOTORCITYBLOG will be kicking ass per usual.

MCB is Detroit because we are about bringing you the stuff you just don't find anywhere else.

Check out this amazing Photography Book by Stefan Peterson. Your chance to own some amazing moment in history (very reasonably) and the print quality is great.

In A Wounded State is a collection of photographs of the underground rock'n'roll and punk scene that existed in Ann Arbor, MI from 1994-2002. This isn't just the story of Ann Arbor, during the 1990s tons of local scenes developed all over the USA. This book reflects a time of change for local independent artists, during a huge time of change in the music industry, with Ann Arbor as the setting. Captured, over these 8 years, are bands such as the Short Dead Dudes, Mazinga, Nadsat Nation, Chore, Easy Action and The Baby Killers (later know as the Von Bondies) keeping a local musical legacy alive. Also featured are hometown legends Scott Morgan, Ron Asheton, Deniz Tek and Hiawatha uniting to continue what they started many, many years ago. All photos are exclusive to this publication.

Check out some of Stefan's latest work.

"In A Wounded State"
by Stefan Peterson $17 88 pages, 107 black and white images and a swanky glossy color cover. Available through cafepress for $17(plus postage)
