Matt Wertz "Under The Summer Sun" Coming 9/16
"5:19" Free Download

Matt Wertz is from Liberty, Missouri, but has called Nashville, Tennessee, home for the last seven years. It seems fitting that he would be writing his own biography on the cusp of his first major label release, just as he did eight years ago before releasing his first independent album. This time, though, he's not trying to play it off like he didn't write it. Matt goes on to say "The record that will be released on Universal Republic is called "Under Summer Sun" and it is a combination of my favorite songs from my first few independent releases, like "5:19" and "Everything's Right," as well as four new songs. Among the new tracks are "Waiting," an introspective bedroom song that deals with the fear that I'm "growing old but not quite growing up," and "Summer Sun," my best effort at a nostalgic summer love song in the vein of Stevie Wonder musically and Don Henley emotionally. And the rest of the songs will strike a chord with anyone who enjoys soulful, carefree, singer-songwriter pop music."

FREE CD: Jody Raffoul - BIG SKY - CD Release @ Fifth Ave RO Sept 25th

1st reader to email us - GONER gets a copy of this great motorcity music from Jody Raffoul

JODY RAFFOUL SETS THE STAGE FOR FIRST-EVER U.S. ALBUM RELEASE
"BIG SKY" IN-STORES SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

"There are not many musicians that can say their music appeals equally to fans of Kid Rock, Nickelback, Collective Soul, Joe Cocker, Blues Traveler, Richard Marx, and the Allman Brothers. JODY RAFFOUL is not your average artist. Not only has he shared the stage with all of these aforementioned acts, JODY was also the National winner of Bon Jovi’s 2006 “Have a Nice Gig” contest, in which he was hand-picked and announced personally by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. JODY went on to open a sold out show at Giant’s Stadium in Bon Jovi’s home state of New Jersey. BIG SKY – which is JODY RAFFOUL’s first national U.S. album release, via Fontana/Universal on September 16 - is poised to be his big breakthrough.

Originally hailing from a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada, RAFFOUL relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he perfected an equal parts roots rock and pop sound that easily appeals to fans of both musical styles. JODY is a confirmed road dog, averaging over 200 shows per year. Previous albums include 2000’s Simple Life and 2004’s Like A Star; which have sold collectively in excess of 25,000 from live show sales alone and has set the stage for BIG SKY’s U.S. album release. BIG SKY is over an hour long, loaded with melodic and memorable tunes, including the album’s leadoff single, “Stay (with me),” a track which combines an infectious beat with lyrics that deal with newfound love, the beautiful ballad “Little Black Car,” and the rhythmic album opener, “Chasing Paper.”

JODY RAFFOUL’s profile is increasing rapidly. He will be the featured “Artist On The Rise” for the month of September on Windows Media.com. The Ecast Network providing digital music to over 10,000 bars and nightclubs across the country will also be supporting JODY nationwide. Fans will get their first listen of BIG SKY when the album is added as a “Featured Pre-Release” to the Network starting August 20th.

The new video for “Stay (with me)” features a special guest appearance from drummer Ryan Hoyle of Collective Soul and was produced/directed/edited by Robin Davey (Buckcherry, Drowning Pool, The Bastard Fairies, The Canary Effect).

The early accolades for BIG SKY have already begun to pour in. “BIG SKY is the long forgotten sound of a great rock record. What a pleasure to listen to, let alone mix,” says the album senior mix engineer Al Sutton (Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow). “BIG SKY is rock in its purest form - uncut, un-stepped on, with sincerity, power and tremendous skill,” adds the album senior mastering engineer Greg Calbi (John Mayer, U2, Bob Dylan, Once Soundtrack, and Flight of the Conchords).

On Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:30pm, JODY RAFFOUL will be making an in-store appearance at the FYE in the Macomb Mall Shopping Center (located at 32233 Gratiot Avenue, Roseville, MI 48066-1147), where he will be signing BIG SKY and performing live. A few night later, the official BIG SKY CD release party will be held on Thursday, September 25th at 7:00pm at Fifth Avenue in Royal Oak, MI. Admission to this show is by purchasing a copy of BIG SKY at any one of nine participating FYE stores in the local Detroit metro area. A special ‘ticket’ will be printed on the receipt with purchase.

It’s apparent that JODY’s career is about to take off. Any true music lover will not be disappointed with BIG SKY. It’s an album worth the price.

***the focus of MCB for the most part is to provide info on local shows - things to do around town etc....we don't really do reviews (we leave that up to you to decide if a band sucks or an artist is great - are they any better/worse if someone writes a glowing or horrific review)

We like to pursue the elusive press pass for our photographers and video peeps

I could provide some additional insight but its sounding very bloggy so the point I am getting at here is we give away a bunch of freebies (probably more than any other website around town) and those relationships require a certain back scratching so....without any other explanation we offer up a few non-detroit related posts here or there so we can get more free tickets and CDs to give away....ahh..you know...who cares - here is some free shit to check out from a hot chick with a great voice

SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush - PJ's Lager House - Every Thursday through Sept 2008

This is more of a news item than we usually would post but check back here soon for a video interview with Gary and PJ as they talk about this month long set of shows that are a must see for any hard core detroit music fan.

"Announcing SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush at PJ's Lager House!!!
PJ's Lager House (1254 Michigan Ave, Corktown, Detroit) is pleased announce the start of SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush throughout the month of September!
Quackenbush is a true Detroit rock legend. He is perhaps best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of SRC, a locally based rock band from the late 1960s. SRC began as the joining of two infamous Detroit/Birmingham bands: The Fugitives with brothers Glenn and Gary Quackenbush and The Chosen Few with Scott Richardson.
From 1965 to 1970, the group was a staple at many of Detroit's most legendary rock venues, including The Grande Ballroom and eventually signed with Motown's Rare Earth label. In 1966, the group approached then-Rationals manager Jeep Holland and their first few gigs were played with Richardson to finish the Fugitives' booking commitments.
The first true SRC show was at the Fenton Community Center in early 1967 and they never looked back!Following their debut full-length release on Capitol Records in 1968, SRC began to headline area stages and venues across the Midwest, sharing the stage with practically every regional band of note at the time, including Bob Seger, the Rationals, the MC5 and many others. SRC achieved great popularity in the UK as well as the Midwestern US.
Today, Quackenbush is the owner of SRC Records, and will be performing live at PJ's Lager House every Thursday in September to promote GQ In A Shade of Blue, Quackenbush's first solo record ever. The live show is not to be missed!
GQ will be playing all the SRC hits including "I'm So Glad, "Black Sheep," "Bolero" and many more. Longtime hits such as "Red House," "Summertime," "Thrill Is Gone" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" will be featured, among others. Lots of standards and lots of blues! GQ is a true guitar powerhouse and professional performer—these are Thurdays not to be missed if you care anything for Detroit rock history!"

"A breakthrough acoustic Americana trio--from overseas!"

The Greencards--one English fiddler and two Australian singer-instrumentalists--push the boundaries of Americana and bluegrass music, creating a sound that's all their own.

Formed in Austin in 2004, they've toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Fiddler Eamon McLoughlin, vocalist Carol Young, and mandolinist Kym Warner are amazing virtuoso talents, but the trio is equally adept at sad, inward-looking numbers that draw from alternative country and folk styles.

"If you like Nickel Creek and the Dixie Chicks--bands that can really play and sing--then you’ll love The Greencards," says Kevin Connor of Austin's KGSR-FM radio.

Fresh from an appearance at the giant Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, The Greencards have made the transition from newcomers to major talents of the Americana scene.
