MCB knows the coolest thing going on around town on this past Tuesday night that you weren't at. South African indie rockers BLK JKS (pronounced Black Jacks) absolutely KILLED IT at the Pike Room up in Pontiac. While you were at home watching TV, or were actually out next door at Owl City or down the road at Kings of Leon, MCB's Drew Bender was on hand to witness and document the debut appearance of a band that Rolling Stone has called an artist to watch, and others have called the 'end to world music.'
Even though the crowd at the Pike Room was maybe 50 people at most, and made up of youngsters and oldsters alike, those in attendance were entranced by BLK JKS rocking combination of noise, guitar rock, sick drumming, and lyrics in English and Zulu. Having just launched their debut full-length album 'After Robots' on Indiana label Secretly Canadian, BLK JKS are making their way across the US. Combining indie noise rock, Afro pop, and some killer riffs and lyrics, these Johannesberg, South Africa musicians seem to be easily destroying any notion that if it doesn't come from the US or Britain that it must be some kind of 'world music.' Their live performance made their studio album seem tame by comparison. Taking a page from TV on the Radio, Wilco, and the Smiths, BLK JKS prove that in the era of the tubal interwebs that artists half a world away can combine such influences with their own sensibilities. I originally heard their debut EP Mystery and was instantly hooked. If you haven't checked out the BLK JKS yet, the only question I have is, "What the hell is stopping you??!" I got a chance to talk to BLK JKS bassist Molefi Makananise after the show and apart from being a helluva a nice guy and a solid bass player he gave a little insight into where the band's at right now. Molefi said that although they're currently living on the road, their home base in the US has been in New York. But, he told me, recording After Robots in Bloomington, IN gave them some quiet to focus on the album. Even though it seems crucial these days for young bands to tour incessantly to build their fanbase (unless they have a major label and radio airtime) and gain exposure, a number of folks have jumped on the BLK JKS bandwagon early. Which is a good thing as these young musicians are going places. When I mentioned that I enjoyed hearing the live performance and asked about the improvisational aspects, Molefi told me that he loves the spontaneity of live performance and to him that is freedom. Hmmm...musical improvisation=freedom. I just can't top that.

Assignment Detroit - The Tragedy of Detroit - TIME Magazine out September 25th 2009
This issue hits the streets tomorrowThis week, Time Inc. launches Assignment Detroit, a year-long commitment to living in and reporting from the city of Detroit. As part of that commitment, the company has purchased a home in the city from which its reporters will live and work.
To kick off coverage, TIME and FORTUNE magazines feature cover stories on the city.
TIME INC. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF JOHN HUEY writes in a letter to readers in TIME and FORTUNE, “We believe that Detroit right now is a great American story. No city has had more influence on the country's economic and social evolution. Detroit was the birthplace of both the industrial age and the nation's middle class, and the city's rise and fall—and struggle to rise again—are a window into the challenges facing all of modern America....As a story, Detroit has been misunderstood, underreported, stereotyped, avoided and exploited for decades. To get it right, we decided to become stakeholders. Over the next year, we intend to flood the D-zone with journalists, photographers, videographers and bloggers from Time and Time.com, Fortune and Fortune.com, CNNMoney.com, Money, even Sports Illustrated....The hope is that through all these efforts, a narrative arc about Detroit will emerge over the next year that can somehow make a difference. While we do not intend to be cheerleaders or apologists, we do have a point of view: we want Detroit to recover and find its way into the future.”

Detroit's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services. The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city recently hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit, the unemployment rate is 28.9%.” Okrent suggests that Detroit can rise again, writing, “For its part, Detroit must address the fact that a 138-sq.-mi. city that once accommodated 1.85 million people is way too large for the 912,000 who remain.... Detroit has to shrink its footprint, even if it means condemning decent houses in the gap-toothed areas and moving their occupants to compact neighborhoods where they might find a modicum of security and service. Build greenbelts, which are a lot cheaper to maintain than untraveled streets. Encourage urban farming. Let the barren areas revert to nature.”

I’M NOT WORRIED ABOUT THAT.”— In an interview with TIME’s Steven Gray, Bing says “There’s no doubt in my mind we’ve got to think longer term. But that’s not today. If we don’t handle the problems we’ve got today, there is no long term.” Gray writes, “Barring anything unforeseen, Bing will win re-election handily. Detroiters may not love him ... but there really are no other viable alternatives.”

For 10.5 months of the year there is little else to do in Chicago besides drink heavily. The Prairie Cartel started as an excuse for Scott Lucas (Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison (both ex-Caviar) to do this in Mike's basement while playing their favorite records. Albums on DFA, Matador, Wax Trax, Modular and Creation were all in heavy rotation during those dark months except when the whisky came out and it went all Ummagumma on them.
The obligatory, possibly illegal, and definitely messy DJ gigs followed. Warehouses and lofts trembled before their can't-mix, won't-even-try-to-mix majesty. They developed a reputation for sets that were somehow gloriously disheveled but still extremely satisfying. After a particularly delirious night behind, on top of, and in front of the decks in London where some teeth got chipped, a little blood got spilled, and the local authorities threatened to pull their passports, they decided the timing was perfect to pick their instruments back up and go home to cut a record

Australia's The Grates are set to release their anticipated sophomore album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won on September 15"' via Thirty Tigers/Dew Process. The 13-song album was produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut and features guest appearances by Kori Gardner of Mates of State (vocals on "Milk Eyes") and Tim Fite (vocals on "Not Today"). On this album, the follow up to their 2006 Interscope Records debut, Gravity Won't Get You High, The Grates have brought a depth and density to the songwriting - the lyrics are raw and poignant and the sonics more biting and aggressive.

The film is a lyrical examination of Thomas’ quest for an expression of truth and her unique brand of performance, combining songs of plaintive melancholy with sharp-witted banter and Sheila, her bizarre stand-up comedian alter ego. The DVD features deleted scenes and performances with Rosie Tomas, Damien Jurado and Sufjan Stevens and the limited vinyl LP is the never-before released Apartment Sessions with Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer that evolved into Thomas' 2007 album, These Friends of Mine.
You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84 is a rare glimpse into a truly one-of-a-kind American underground music scene that documents the impact that the Punk movement has had on the Windy City. Though overlooked in the annals of rock history, Chicago served as an important early supporter of this burgeoning and controversial scene that could be violent and unsavory at times, but always tempered with large doses of humor, art, and intelligence. Lissie, a young songwriter from Rock Island, IL, will release a new EP, Why You Runnin', November 10th, 2009 on Fat Possum Records. Why You Runnin' is a five-song introduction to Lissie and pivots around her big, achingly raw and evocative voice. The songs range from the hand-clapping, foot-stomping spirited opener "Little Lovin'" to the poignant country cover "Wedding Bells" to the haunting, soulful '60s pop-esque ballads "Everywhere I Go" and "Here Before". These tracks were recorded at her current home in Ojai, CA, and at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC, with her friend Bill Reynolds (of Band of Horses, who also produced and plays bass on the songs alongside his bandmate Tyler Ramsey, who guests on guitar for some tracks). The hymn-like "Oh Mississippi" was recorded with Ed Harcourt last fall, when Lissie was far from home in London, England.
Greg Laswell is releasing his new EP, Covers, October 6 on Vanguard Records! Produced in a cabin in Mountainaire, Arizona, Laswell played most of the instruments on the five song record, which features covers of Echo & The Bunnymen, Morphine, Mazzy Star, Kate Bush and Kristin Hersh's "Your Ghost" which was recently a featured MP3 on KCRW's "Today's Top Tune".

A Sunshower can be a rare occurrence, but when these opposing forces meet, magic and allure is in the air. This is exactly why the NYC-based rockers, Jupiter One, chose the title (inspired by the Japanese short film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa) for their upcoming Ryko album available September 15, 2009. Their far-out freshness mixed with timeless musical inspirations mesh together in a bittersweet indie-pop rock concoction—produced by the group and noted engineer Chris Ribando (Diamond Nights, The Black Crowes, The Fever).
This young quartet—all in their twenties—consisting of K Ishibashi (lead vocals), Zac Colwell (lead guitar), Dave Heilman (drums) and Pat Dougherty (bass), has a knack for unifying their contemporary style with a range of musical influences. Sunshower is the result of Jupiter One's experienced ear. For instance, the dancefloor-friendly “Simple Stones,” filled with handclaps and soulful riffs, boasts a bass line for all ages while blending ‘80s Rolling Stones and MGMT. The epic opener “Volcano” resurrects the youthful spirit of the Beach Boys with The Flaming Lips, while delivering one of the disc’s best choruses. And if Ishibashi conjures The Shins on “Find Me a Place,” then he drops vintage, finger-picking folk on “People in the Mountain”. Lastly but certainly not least, their current single “Flaming Arrow,” a shimmering acoustic folk tune, shoots through with a bumping bass line and New Orleans inspired drum groove. This genre-bending approach creates a hook-heavy opus well suited for our A.D.D. times.
The band’s chain of events since forming has been quite impressive, from selling out NYC’s hot bed of music venues, to releasing their self-titled EP in 2005, to hooking up with music industry legend Jac Holzman (yes, the man who signed The Doors) who ended up sequencing their 2007 debut full-length.
And considering that most of America has already heard their music in NBC’s hit show Heroes or in high profile TV ad campaigns for MLB’s Opening Day ‘09, NASCAR Talladega Race ’09, Madden NFL ’08, Payless and Mazda, it’s clear Jupiter One has come a long way from the traveling circus. Yes, Barnum Kaleidoscope is where Virginian-born K Ishibashi and Austin native Zac Colwell met as touring musicians, and where the two planted the seeds for Jupiter One. Emerging out of the garage-punk constellation around our nation’s capitol, The Dustys signal their arrival with a cacophonously brilliant debut EP, Sticky Blood, released earlier this month on Merrifield Records. Born to write chopper music for long-hauls across scorched earth, these noiseniks meld the power-pop of Big Star with the woozy psych-pomp of T-rex, while fusing the sneering energy of the Groundhogs or the Sonics with stoned-out passages that’d sound at home on any labyrinthine Red Sparrowes opus. After holing themselves up in the studio with producer Eamonn Aiken (who’d also man the rumble of the bass on the short-player), the band would win the attention of electro-rock stalwarts The Bravery, who practically begged the band to join them on a meaty 30-date jaunt across the states -- a proposition the Dustys couldn’t refuse.Classic without wreaking of nostalgia, smart with zero pretenses, the sound of The Dustys is simple: thinking man’s pysch-stomp, hook-laden acid-bubblegum. The Mary Onettes will release 'Puzzles', taken from their sophomore album 'Islands', released November 3rd on Sweden's Labrador Records, home to The Legends, The Radio Dept. and Little Big Adventure to name a few.
The Mary Onettes’ critically acclaimed debut was described as the perfect mix between A-ha and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Now they are back with a grandiose new album. Imagine a Swedish equivalent of The National on a diet of speed, Planet Earth DVDs, and 80’s guitar pop singles and you’ll have a vague idea of how amazing this is.
The year 2008 was characterized by the deaths of close relatives and friends of Philip Ekström (singer and songwriter of the band) and on 'Islands' he’s put more focus on the lyrics. 'The Disappearance of My Youth' and 'Cry For Love' were written in his girlfriend’s mother’s estate and most of the songs on the album are highly marked by his time in Stockholm after her death.
“The songs are almost too personal and I’ve had a hard time playing them for friends. It’s like all I want to do is keep them to myself.” (Philip).
The lyrics are retrospective with themes of lost youth, transience and death.
The first single 'Dare' was no. 1 on Elbo.ws, 'Pleasure Songs' from the debut was Single of the Week on iTunes with half a million downloads. The Mary Onettes have had two songs feature in the TV-series Grey’s Anatomy and their first single on Labrador was tagged Best New Music on Pitchfork. Things have been going well since The Mary Onettes signed with Labrador, but the band has certainly had their ups and downs.

”The title ‘Islands’ came up because I see the tracks on the album as small islands in different shapes and forms where every song is like a record of it’s very own. Johan on Labrador Records suggested the same title without having heard me mentioning the idea, so that was a coincidence too good not to pursue.” (Philip)

Best known for producing and co-writing tracks for The Fugees' multi-platinum album The Score, as well as recording two solo albums, PolySci (Columbia; 1998) and I, John (Transparent; 2002), which featured guest appearances by Herbie Hancock, Esthero and Tricky, and included a duet with Carly Simon, Forté dropped several MP3s into the blogosphere, including "Life Has Just Begun (Returning Home)," “Homecoming” (featuring Talib Kweli) and a remake of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, all of which can be heard at johnforte.com, shortly upon his return.

The core trio of Nomi Ruiz as vocalist/songwriter, Andrew Raposo on bass and Morgan Wiley on keyboards met through their involvement with 2008’s critically acclaimed Hercules and Love Affair, an electro-disco outfit formed in the fires of New York’s dance music scene. Their diverse talents coalesced in a sexy sound destined for the dance floor, and after an extensive world tour, the three harnessed the synergy they shared on stage to create original music. They recast themselves as Jessica 6, named aftera character in the futuristic, hyper-sexed 1976 Michael Anderson movie “Logan's Run”.
Singer Nomi Ruiz was born and raised in Brooklyn. Music was her childhood paradise. As a teenager Nomi gravitated towards a diverse movement of artists dedicated to transforming the contemporary music scene. Since the release of her 2005 debut album Lost In Lust (an album of ballads wrapped around hip-hop heavy street samples) she’s toured the world with Debbie Harry, Antony & The Johnsons, and Cocorosie. Her performance on Hercules & Love Affair’s Chicago house-inspired “You Belong”, a duet with Antony, was compared to Yazoo-era Alison Moyet by Dazed & Confused, and the UK's Guardian referred to Nomi as “a performer who boasts the spookily effortless air of a future pop icon.”
Andrew Raposo and Morgan Wiley were members of Automato, whose 2004 album for Capitol Records was produced by James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of DFA Records. Morgan and Andrew have maintained a close working relationship with DFA, most notably by contributing to both the recording and live aspects of LCD Soundsystem and Hercules and Love Affair. Their production company serviced the B-sides for the first H&LA album and H&LA remixes of Goldfrapp, Cut Copy, Chaz Jankel, and Aeroplane feat. Kathy Diamond.
Earlier this year, Andrew and Morgan worked
with Tim Goldsworthy again on the new Massive Attack album.
Jessica 6 is now preparing for October’s highly anticipated, digital release of the Fun Girls EP and music video, followed by a Spring 2010 full-length album. The EP will include remixes by NYC based producer Olivier Spencer, who is known for his work with Still Going & House Of House as well as a remix by Germany’s Keinemusik, Illbient pioneer BYZAR, and other worldwide surprises
An early treat to fans, Free Energy will release their debut digital EP, September 22 on Astralwerks/DFA Records. The three song EP will include single, "Free Energy", non-album track "Something In Common" and "Dark Trance" which is on the forthcoming album. The EP will be available on iTunes and the band will be selling a CD version of it on tour.
