PHOTOS: BLK JKS at the Pike Room by Andrew Bender
Even though the crowd at the Pike Room was maybe 50 people at most, and made up of youngsters and oldsters alike, those in attendance were entranced by BLK JKS rocking combination of noise, guitar rock, sick drumming, and lyrics in English and Zulu. Having just launched their debut full-length album 'After Robots' on Indiana label Secretly Canadian, BLK JKS are making their way across the US. Combining indie noise rock, Afro pop, and some killer riffs and lyrics, these Johannesberg, South Africa musicians seem to be easily destroying any notion that if it doesn't come from the US or Britain that it must be some kind of 'world music.' Their live performance made their studio album seem tame by comparison. Taking a page from TV on the Radio, Wilco, and the Smiths, BLK JKS prove that in the era of the tubal interwebs that artists half a world away can combine such influences with their own sensibilities. I originally heard their debut EP Mystery and was instantly hooked. If you haven't checked out the BLK JKS yet, the only question I have is, "What the hell is stopping you??!" I got a chance to talk to BLK JKS bassist Molefi Makananise after the show and apart from being a helluva a nice guy and a solid bass player he gave a little insight into where the band's at right now. Molefi said that although they're currently living on the road, their home base in the US has been in New York. But, he told me, recording After Robots in Bloomington, IN gave them some quiet to focus on the album. Even though it seems crucial these days for young bands to tour incessantly to build their fanbase (unless they have a major label and radio airtime) and gain exposure, a number of folks have jumped on the BLK JKS bandwagon early. Which is a good thing as these young musicians are going places. When I mentioned that I enjoyed hearing the live performance and asked about the improvisational aspects, Molefi told me that he loves the spontaneity of live performance and to him that is freedom. Hmmm...musical improvisation=freedom. I just can't top that.

Assignment Detroit - The Tragedy of Detroit - TIME Magazine out September 25th 2009
This week, Time Inc. launches Assignment Detroit, a year-long commitment to living in and reporting from the city of Detroit. As part of that commitment, the company has purchased a home in the city from which its reporters will live and work.
TIME INC. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF JOHN HUEY writes in a letter to readers in TIME and FORTUNE, “We believe that Detroit right now is a great American story. No city has had more influence on the country's economic and social evolution. Detroit was the birthplace of both the industrial age and the nation's middle class, and the city's rise and fall—and struggle to rise again—are a window into the challenges facing all of modern America....As a story, Detroit has been misunderstood, underreported, stereotyped, avoided and exploited for decades. To get it right, we decided to become stakeholders. Over the next year, we intend to flood the D-zone with journalists, photographers, videographers and bloggers from Time and Time.com, Fortune and Fortune.com, CNNMoney.com, Money, even Sports Illustrated....The hope is that through all these efforts, a narrative arc about Detroit will emerge over the next year that can somehow make a difference. While we do not intend to be cheerleaders or apologists, we do have a point of view: we want Detroit to recover and find its way into the future.”
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1925681,00.html
TIME COVER: “THE TRAGEDY OF DETROIT. HOW A GREAT CITY FELL— AND HOW IT CAN RISE AGAIN.”— Daniel Okrent, a Detroit native, reports, “By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services. The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city recently hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit, the unemployment rate is 28.9%.” Okrent suggests that Detroit can rise again, writing, “For its part, Detroit must address the fact that a 138-sq.-mi. city that once accommodated 1.85 million people is way too large for the 912,000 who remain.... Detroit has to shrink its footprint, even if it means condemning decent houses in the gap-toothed areas and moving their occupants to compact neighborhoods where they might find a modicum of security and service. Build greenbelts, which are a lot cheaper to maintain than untraveled streets. Encourage urban farming. Let the barren areas revert to nature.”
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1925796,00.html
DETROIT MAYOR DAVE BING TELLS TIME, “CHANGES THAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED 20 YEARS AGO ARE NOW UPON US. PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS HAD FOLKS WHO WERE SO CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING ELECTED, OR RE-ELECTED. I’M NOT WORRIED ABOUT THAT.”— In an interview with TIME’s Steven Gray, Bing says “There’s no doubt in my mind we’ve got to think longer term. But that’s not today. If we don’t handle the problems we’ve got today, there is no long term.” Gray writes, “Barring anything unforeseen, Bing will win re-election handily. Detroiters may not love him ... but there really are no other viable alternatives.”

FORTUNE COVER: “GM: DO OR DIE”—FORTUNE’s Alex Taylor writes, “General Motors and Fortune have grown up together...As Time Inc. founder Henry Luce was creating the modern business magazine at the end of the 1920s, GM was passing Ford to become the world’s largest automaker...With this issue, Fortune commences its contribution to Time Inc.'s ‘Assignment Detroit’ series with a look at two sides of GM: its management under the new leadership of president and CEO Fritz Henderson, and its manufacturing...Can Henderson do it? Yes, he can. I have never met an executive who was better prepared for his job. But can GM do it? There, I'm not so sure.”
http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/22/news/companies/gm_detroit.fortune/index.htm
GM CHAIRMAN ED WHITACRE ON FRITZ HENDERSON: “HE HAS TO PRODUCE...WE WANT HIM TO SUCCEED, BUT HE’S UNDER THE GUN. SOMETHING HAS TO IGNITE THIS COMPANY.” -- FORTUNE’s Alex Taylor writes, “GM finds itself in a better place than it has in a decade. The company that Henderson led out of bankruptcy on June 10 is smaller, nimbler, more focused, and less financially stretched.” Henderson tells FORTUNE, “Bankruptcy was very humbling...admitting the exact nature of our wrongs...making a list of all persons we had harmed and being willing to make amends to them all.” Ron Bloom, senior advisor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told FORTUNE, “GM has to make great cars, not just okay cars...The current lineup is not all great cars. They understand what it takes, but now they have to do it."
http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/21/news/companies/fritz_henderson_gm.fortune/index.htm
FORTUNE’S DAVID WHITFORD ON GENERAL MOTORS AND “THE GREEN CAR ECONOMY THAT MAY WELL BE DETROIT’S LAST HOPE” – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing sees his city as “the logical place for the next generation of battery-powered cars to be engineered, designed, and built,” telling FORTUNE, “Detroit has been and always will be the home and epicenter of auto innovation.” Whitford writes, “[L]ate next year, GM plans to begin building the Volt, Chevy’s $40,000 plug-in electric car. The stakes have never been higher: for GM ... for the American auto industry ... and not least for the city of Detroit, still betting, however improbably, on a Motor City renaissance ... Now it’s proposing to leapfrog its rivals with a hastily developed, expensive technology, knowing it needs nothing less than a grand slam if it’s going to regain the confidence of investors, begin paying back the taxpayers, and jump-start the green-car economy that may well be Detroit’s last hope.”

MP3 Mondays on MOTORCITYBLOG - another drop this week?

Double Wax package Released Novermber 17th
For 10.5 months of the year there is little else to do in Chicago besides drink heavily. The Prairie Cartel started as an excuse for Scott Lucas (Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison (both ex-Caviar) to do this in Mike's basement while playing their favorite records. Albums on DFA, Matador, Wax Trax, Modular and Creation were all in heavy rotation during those dark months except when the whisky came out and it went all Ummagumma on them.

Australia's The Grates are set to release their anticipated sophomore album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won on September 15"' via Thirty Tigers/Dew Process. The 13-song album was produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut and features guest appearances by Kori Gardner of Mates of State (vocals on "Milk Eyes") and Tim Fite (vocals on "Not Today"). On this album, the follow up to their 2006 Interscope Records debut, Gravity Won't Get You High, The Grates have brought a depth and density to the songwriting - the lyrics are raw and poignant and the sonics more biting and aggressive.
"If Teeth Lost, Hearts Won was a beast, I imagine it'd be like something from Where The Wild Things Are," lead singer and front woman Patience says. "They're big and scary, but they've also got this sensitivity, and pick up the little kid and protect him." Drummer Alana adds, "Or maybe like the griffin In Alice In Wonderland. He's like a lion and eagle together, but a really gentle creature."
In Australia, The Grates have played numerous sold out headline tours, played major festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Falls Festival, Southbound and stole the show at Splendour In The Grass. Gravity Won't Get You High has gone Gold in Australia while Teeth Lost, Hearts Won is well on its way to Gold status as well.
The American record release follows a highly successful trip to the U.S. for the SXSW Music Festival in March. While in Austin, the band played five buzzed about shows in four days and gained a massive amount of recognition for their highly energetic performances. USA Today named the band one of ten favorite performances of the festival, stating "Lead singer Patience Hodgson blew me away with her enthusiasm ... a hardcore fan suddenly appeared, dressed in a leotard, and joined her for a spontaneous dance ... these are the SXSW moments you dream of." The Los Angeles Times added, "The Grates are a group that are impossible not to smile with… (they) will no doubt soon be laughing their way to the bank, for if the world embraced the
Ting Tings last year, Patience & Co. are sure to be everyone's new darlings any day now." The Austin Chronicle said of the album, "Full marks go to Aussie trio The Grates for not over thinking things and executing them almost flawlessly on new LP Teeth Lost, Hearts Won. When you rock with that kind of abandon, wearing a batgirl costume onstage works." The highly successful trip was capped off with multiple sold out shows in New York and Los Angeles.
The band has relocated to Brooklyn, NY in order to make American touring easier and has since played a residency at Piano's on the Lower East Side in July. They also made an appearance at the Hillside Festival in Guelph, ON July 24-26th and will play the 2009 Monolith Music Festival, held at Red Rocks on September 13th (with the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Phoenix, Girl Talk, M Ward, Of Montreal and many more). In addition, they have also confirmed club dates through September and October.

RUBBLEBUCKET Announces Fall Tour
& Self-titled Album, Out October 13th
Boston and Brooklyn-based band Rubblebucket is excited to announce 15 Eastern US shows on their upcoming fall tour in support of their latest album, Rubblebucket set to release October 13th. The highly anticipated album is a follow-up to the band’s debut Rose’s Dream, released last year.
With its unique, afro-beat inspired sound, some exciting recent achievements - including being named Best New Band of 2008 (Seven Days Vermont, a title previously held by Phish and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals) and winning Relix Magazine’s Jam-Off Competition - and comparisons having been drawn to Talking Heads, Bjork and Fela Kuti, Rubblebucket is clearly poised for big things on their upcoming tour, into 2010 and beyond!
Led by Alex Toth on trumpet and the inspiring vocals of Kalmia Traver, the nine-piece band produces a sound that defies classification. Its one-of-a-kind style contains hints of dance, rock and funk, resulting in catchy rhythms and soulful melodies that are certain to appeal to fans of countless varied genres of music.
2009 sees Rubblebucket busy as songwriting machines, gearing up for another album to be released in 2010.

This summer has been the hottest on record for Oakland's club destroyers, Wallpaper. Following the remix of Das Racist's "Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell" (which Pitchfork and Village Voice both proclaimed the "Summer Jam of '09"), and a wildly controversial mashup of Jay-Z's "99 Problems" and "Death of Autotune" that RCRDLBL heralded "dadaist genius" and MTV News declared "an instant favorite," its safe to say there are no signs of cooling down.
With the days growing long and the nights even longer, Wallpaper. has found themselves at the heart of another summer track, this time a collaboration with Jacob Safari of The Mae Shi and Kid Static from Chicago. "Me and Jacob from The Mae Shi had been playing grab ass for a few months about collaborating on some music. So he finally sent me this freaky glitch reggaeton thing. I was in the studio late on a Saturday night chalk full of Red Bull and self loathing, wishing I was on top of the Standard Hotel LA gettin’ my ugly dude on.

After their wildly successful performance at Lollapalooza 2009, Chicago-based DJ/electro duo Moneypenny will take their music to the masses with the release of a free 2-song digital single and string of upcoming high profile buzz gigs in Chicago, LA and San Francisco. The duo, which began strictly as a DJ project in 2008, quickly blossomed into a full-fledged live act as Jessica Gonyea (A-Cup) and Chess Hubbard (Mother Hubbard)’s shared passion for new wave, pop, indie, electro and house music led them to write and record original material. Kept under lock and key until their debut live performance at Lollapalooza, Moneypenny’s original tracks quickly became must have material for industry types on both sides of the pond as word spread about these two incredibly talented young ladies. More than just two pretty faces, Moneypenny come stacked with a slew of great songs – one of which has already been licensed to ABC TV’s “Make It Or Break It” – a charismatic live show incorporating custom video projections and DJ skills to keep the after party going all night long. Moneypenny’s trend of playing “all the right gigs” continues into October with live sets at Dim Mak Tuesdays @ Cinespace in Los Angeles and the legendary Popscene! party in San Francisco acting as their debut performances in each market.
Moneypenny are working on their debut full length release for 2010 (working with Simon Perry/Echo and The Bunnymen), however in the meantime, they'd like to share a free gift for you to post and check out.
First single “Say No” was recorded in Chicago earlier this year and comes packaged with an insanely dance floor ready remix courtesy of good friends and fellow Chicagoans, Hey Champ.

All The Way From Michigan Not Mars Clip (Video Link)
You Weren't There Trailer (Video Link)
October 27th will see the DVD releases of All The Way From Michigan Not Mars and You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84 from Brooklyn, NY's Factory 25. Both titles will also be released in a limited edition bundle format that includes the DVD, an LP featuring music from the films and other collectors items. All The Way From Michigan Not Mars is a meditative exploration of Rosie Thomas’ work that uses intimate live performances with fellow songwriters Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer as a pathway. The film is a lyrical examination of Thomas’ quest for an expression of truth and her unique brand of performance, combining songs of plaintive melancholy with sharp-witted banter and Sheila, her bizarre stand-up comedian alter ego. The DVD features deleted scenes and performances with Rosie Tomas, Damien Jurado and Sufjan Stevens and the limited vinyl LP is the never-before released Apartment Sessions with Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer that evolved into Thomas' 2007 album, These Friends of Mine.
You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84 is a rare glimpse into a truly one-of-a-kind American underground music scene that documents the impact that the Punk movement has had on the Windy City. Though overlooked in the annals of rock history, Chicago served as an important early supporter of this burgeoning and controversial scene that could be violent and unsavory at times, but always tempered with large doses of humor, art, and intelligence. The limited LP/DVD bundle contains a 20 track vinyl LP of rarities from Chicago’s finest, poster and deleted scenes and rare performances.Factory 25 will be releasing five titles through the remainder of 2009. In addition to All The Way From Michigan Not Mars and You Weren't There, the independent film and music label will be releasing 1001 Nights featuring Damon and Naomi, Frownland directed by Ronald Bronstein and High School Record featuring members of Mika Miko, No Age, Lavender Diamond and Minutemen.

Lissie, a young songwriter from Rock Island, IL, will release a new EP, Why You Runnin', November 10th, 2009 on Fat Possum Records. Why You Runnin' is a five-song introduction to Lissie and pivots around her big, achingly raw and evocative voice. The songs range from the hand-clapping, foot-stomping spirited opener "Little Lovin'" to the poignant country cover "Wedding Bells" to the haunting, soulful '60s pop-esque ballads "Everywhere I Go" and "Here Before". These tracks were recorded at her current home in Ojai, CA, and at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC, with her friend Bill Reynolds (of Band of Horses, who also produced and plays bass on the songs alongside his bandmate Tyler Ramsey, who guests on guitar for some tracks). The hymn-like "Oh Mississippi" was recorded with Ed Harcourt last fall, when Lissie was far from home in London, England.
Greg Laswell is releasing his new EP, Covers, October 6 on Vanguard Records! Produced in a cabin in Mountainaire, Arizona, Laswell played most of the instruments on the five song record, which features covers of Echo & The Bunnymen, Morphine, Mazzy Star, Kate Bush and Kristin Hersh's "Your Ghost" which was recently a featured MP3 on KCRW's "Today's Top Tune".

Creating a Music-Induced Meteorological Phenomenon Everywhere on September 15th! **
Download Jupiter One’s “Flaming Arrow” mp3 here:
A Sunshower can be a rare occurrence, but when these opposing forces meet, magic and allure is in the air. This is exactly why the NYC-based rockers, Jupiter One, chose the title (inspired by the Japanese short film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa) for their upcoming Ryko album available September 15, 2009. Their far-out freshness mixed with timeless musical inspirations mesh together in a bittersweet indie-pop rock concoction—produced by the group and noted engineer Chris Ribando (Diamond Nights, The Black Crowes, The Fever).
This young quartet—all in their twenties—consisting of K Ishibashi (lead vocals), Zac Colwell (lead guitar), Dave Heilman (drums) and Pat Dougherty (bass), has a knack for unifying their contemporary style with a range of musical influences. Sunshower is the result of Jupiter One's experienced ear. For instance, the dancefloor-friendly “Simple Stones,” filled with handclaps and soulful riffs, boasts a bass line for all ages while blending ‘80s Rolling Stones and MGMT. The epic opener “Volcano” resurrects the youthful spirit of the Beach Boys with The Flaming Lips, while delivering one of the disc’s best choruses. And if Ishibashi conjures The Shins on “Find Me a Place,” then he drops vintage, finger-picking folk on “People in the Mountain”. Lastly but certainly not least, their current single “Flaming Arrow,” a shimmering acoustic folk tune, shoots through with a bumping bass line and New Orleans inspired drum groove. This genre-bending approach creates a hook-heavy opus well suited for our A.D.D. times.
The band’s chain of events since forming has been quite impressive, from selling out NYC’s hot bed of music venues, to releasing their self-titled EP in 2005, to hooking up with music industry legend Jac Holzman (yes, the man who signed The Doors) who ended up sequencing their 2007 debut full-length.
And considering that most of America has already heard their music in NBC’s hit show Heroes or in high profile TV ad campaigns for MLB’s Opening Day ‘09, NASCAR Talladega Race ’09, Madden NFL ’08, Payless and Mazda, it’s clear Jupiter One has come a long way from the traveling circus. Yes, Barnum Kaleidoscope is where Virginian-born K Ishibashi and Austin native Zac Colwell met as touring musicians, and where the two planted the seeds for Jupiter One. Having quit their day jobs, the new Jupiter One, with the addition of former STOMP member and New Jersey-born Dave Heilman and Delaware-raised Pat Dougherty, continue to rock stage shows Stateside and breathe new life into their ever-evolving sound.

For a sneak peak of Sweet Otherwise, check out this free MP3,
Acclaimed Los Angeles trio The Happy Hollows have announced the release of their debut full length in October. The album, Spells is a culmination of their work with producer and former Mighty Lemon Drops guitarist David Newton (The Little Ones, The Blood Arm), who also produced the group’s 2008 EP Imaginary. The young group's infectious and irreverent noise-pop has earned considerable following up and down the west coast, with their energetic and charismatic performances. Vocalist/guitarist Sarah Negahdari wields ominous riffs and finger-tapped arpeggios while singing with a cherubic-yet-mischievous grin. Meanwhile, the agile rhythm section of Charles Mahoney (bass/vocals) and Chris Hernandez (drums/vocals) vault and lunge with precision.

Classic without wreaking of nostalgia, smart with zero pretenses, the sound of The Dustys is simple: thinking man’s pysch-stomp, hook-laden acid-bubblegum. The kind of stuff meant to soundtrack Peyote-fueled desert benders and hallucinogenic side-show soul parties. Sound too far-fetched? Well tune in and drop out to the rollicking slab of vibe-heavy garage available for download below. Then check out the full touring itinerary. Might we suggest cranking the volume, whilst locating the date nearest you?

The Mary Onettes will release 'Puzzles', taken from their sophomore album 'Islands', released November 3rd on Sweden's Labrador Records, home to The Legends, The Radio Dept. and Little Big Adventure to name a few.
The Mary Onettes’ critically acclaimed debut was described as the perfect mix between A-ha and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Now they are back with a grandiose new album. Imagine a Swedish equivalent of The National on a diet of speed, Planet Earth DVDs, and 80’s guitar pop singles and you’ll have a vague idea of how amazing this is.
The year 2008 was characterized by the deaths of close relatives and friends of Philip Ekström (singer and songwriter of the band) and on 'Islands' he’s put more focus on the lyrics. 'The Disappearance of My Youth' and 'Cry For Love' were written in his girlfriend’s mother’s estate and most of the songs on the album are highly marked by his time in Stockholm after her death.
“The songs are almost too personal and I’ve had a hard time playing them for friends. It’s like all I want to do is keep them to myself.” (Philip).
The first single 'Dare' was no. 1 on Elbo.ws, 'Pleasure Songs' from the debut was Single of the Week on iTunes with half a million downloads. The Mary Onettes have had two songs feature in the TV-series Grey’s Anatomy and their first single on Labrador was tagged Best New Music on Pitchfork. Things have been going well since The Mary Onettes signed with Labrador, but the band has certainly had their ups and downs.
.
”The title ‘Islands’ came up because I see the tracks on the album as small islands in different shapes and forms where every song is like a record of it’s very own. Johan on Labrador Records suggested the same title without having heard me mentioning the idea, so that was a coincidence too good not to pursue.” (Philip)

John has gone from working with the Fugees on one of the biggest hip-hop albums of all time, to being incarcerated on drug trafficking charges, to receiving an official pardon from President Bush and re-starting his life as a new man. He reflects on this incredible journey in the form of his triumphant StyleFREE the EP.
John sings, raps, and plays guitar on the seven song set, which is his first release since leaving prison. You can stream the full album on AOL Music and you can check out the mp3 for "Nervous" here
“a meditative and mature suite of songs that alternates Pharoahe Monch-style rap discourses on society and enlightenment with love-and-empowerment string ballads.” –Village Voice, August 2009
Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer John Forté is pleased to announce StyleFREE the EP, his first collection of new music to be released in eight years. The EP debuted on John’s new website, johnforte.com on July 14 – exactly nine years from the day he was arrested on charges of drug trafficking – and is now available via all online retailers, with a physical EP dropping on September 22.
Forté’s undeniable talent as a lyricist and musician, far from diminishing during his incarceration, has grown and matured. His new songs, full of powerful social commentary combined with hope and inspiration, bear witness to the remaking of a man and his struggle to remain free – they are a testament to his spiritual journey and proof that the phoenix can, and will, rise from the ashes.
Despite having been largely removed from the tech revolution the past 7 years, Forté has wasted no time embracing new technologies and new business models with regards to his music. He is selling StyleFREE the EP direct to fans on http://www.johnforte.com/ , his new, media-rich website where fans can watch several new videos, interact with the artist, and hear streaming audio of the entire EP.
John Forté is also excited to offer his first single, “Play My Cards for Me” as a free MP3

Best known for producing and co-writing tracks for The Fugees' multi-platinum album The Score, as well as recording two solo albums, PolySci (Columbia; 1998) and I, John (Transparent; 2002), which featured guest appearances by Herbie Hancock, Esthero and Tricky, and included a duet with Carly Simon, Forté dropped several MP3s into the blogosphere, including "Life Has Just Begun (Returning Home)," “Homecoming” (featuring Talib Kweli) and a remake of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, all of which can be heard at johnforte.com, shortly upon his return.
In addition to recording, Forté has been writing (he signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster for his memoir), touring (he recently joined fellow artists Talib Kweli, Chrisette Michelle, and Pharoahe Monch on stage as special guests of The Roots at Highline Ballroom, showcased at SXSW, and returned from Ireland having performed with Ben Taylor and David Saw) and is actively working with at-risk youth at In Arms Reach, a Harlem-based initiative for children of incarcerated parents.
“Fun Girl (Byzar remix)”
Their spooky and mesmerizing first single,
The core trio of Nomi Ruiz as vocalist/songwriter, Andrew Raposo on bass and Morgan Wiley on keyboards met through their involvement with 2008’s critically acclaimed Hercules and Love Affair, an electro-disco outfit formed in the fires of New York’s dance music scene. Their diverse talents coalesced in a sexy sound destined for the dance floor, and after an extensive world tour, the three harnessed the synergy they shared on stage to create original music. They recast themselves as Jessica 6, named aftera character in the futuristic, hyper-sexed 1976 Michael Anderson movie “Logan's Run”.
Singer Nomi Ruiz was born and raised in Brooklyn. Music was her childhood paradise. As a teenager Nomi gravitated towards a diverse movement of artists dedicated to transforming the contemporary music scene. Since the release of her 2005 debut album Lost In Lust (an album of ballads wrapped around hip-hop heavy street samples) she’s toured the world with Debbie Harry, Antony & The Johnsons, and Cocorosie. Her performance on Hercules & Love Affair’s Chicago house-inspired “You Belong”, a duet with Antony, was compared to Yazoo-era Alison Moyet by Dazed & Confused, and the UK's Guardian referred to Nomi as “a performer who boasts the spookily effortless air of a future pop icon.”
Andrew Raposo and Morgan Wiley were members of Automato, whose 2004 album for Capitol Records was produced by James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of DFA Records. Morgan and Andrew have maintained a close working relationship with DFA, most notably by contributing to both the recording and live aspects of LCD Soundsystem and Hercules and Love Affair. Their production company serviced the B-sides for the first H&LA album and H&LA remixes of Goldfrapp, Cut Copy, Chaz Jankel, and Aeroplane feat. Kathy Diamond.
Jessica 6 is now preparing for October’s highly anticipated, digital release of the Fun Girls EP and music video, followed by a Spring 2010 full-length album. The EP will include remixes by NYC based producer Olivier Spencer, who is known for his work with Still Going & House Of House as well as a remix by Germany’s Keinemusik, Illbient pioneer BYZAR, and other worldwide surprises
