The GRAMMY Museum® is pleased to announce its plans to expand the forthcoming exhibit celebrating the 40th anniversary of seminal L.A. punk rock band X. Previously set to open on June 30, 2017, on the Museum’s fourth floor, X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles will now be displayed on the second floor in the Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery, opening Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. With more artifacts and space than previously planned, the exhibit will give visitors a glimpse into how X's four original members – Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake – quickly established the band as one of the best in the first wave of L.A.'s flourishing punk scene.
Items on display will include:
• Original instruments and gear played by the band
• Handwritten lyrics and notebooks by Exene Cervenka and John Doe
• Clothing and other personal items
• Original concert flyers for L.A. shows
• Rare photographs and artwork by Exene
• X: The Unheard Music film, and more!
"We are so excited to be moving this exhibit to our main exhibits gallery, giving X, one of Los Angeles’ most influential punk rock bands, the recognition they deserve,” says GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman. "X played such an integral role in developing the West Coast punk movement, and we are excited to tell that story, now with even more artifacts and ephemera than previously planned."
"When we were in the early stages of developing the exhibit, we knew what an important story we’d be telling, but we had no idea just how many photographs, artifacts, and other items we would have access to,” continues GRAMMY Museum Curator Nwaka Onwusa. “Thanks to X, we outgrew our previously planned space before the exhibit even opened! We can’t wait to share this exhibit with our visitors, and we are so honored to be giving X the spotlight they deserve.”

Five Detroit rock bands will perform to help out one of their most ardent fans D.d. Kethman on Friday, July 28 at 8 pm at PJ's Lager House in Detroit.
Join local music scene advocate, dedicated fan, and Motor City Rah Rah, D.d. Kethman in her fight against cancer! D.d. has been a scene supporter and has had an active role in the music scene for many years starting with organizing the original grassroots Fourth Street Fair and volunteering at many cultural events including Concert of Colors, Theatre Bizarre, etc. She was diagnosed with cancer in May and has been undergoing treatment since then. Everyone can use a little help with their finances during this trying time, so the funds raised from this event will help her get back on her feet.
The show will feature performances by the unstoppable rock band White Shag who recently won the award for “Outstanding Alt/Punk Indie Group” at the 2017 Detroit Music Awards. Punk trio The Zotz will perform, along with dark wave rockers Panic or Pain, punk rock by The Dregs and a new band Rocket to Rehab will open the show. The Motor City Rah Rahs will also be there to cheer her on!

THE DETROIT ALL-STAR GARAGE ROCK PUNK REVUE RETURNS!
Get ready to return to the glory days of Detroit Rock n' Roll! Static Network and Smitt E. Smitty joined forces to bring you The Detroit All-Star Garage Rock Punk Revue II on Saturday, August 5 at 9 pm at The Tangent Gallery in Detroit.
This year's show will feature reunions of bands from the '70s, '80s and '90s Detroit garage, rock and punk music scenes. The bands that will be revisited on this historical night are iconic female powered trio Inside Out, punk band The Plugs will reunite for the first time since the '80s, the infamous Elvis Hitler returns to the stage, punkabilly gods Snake Out, monster rockers 3D Invisibles, popstars See Dick Run and kicking off the night will be rockers Cinecyde.

Also returning will be the Detroit All Star Band helmed by drummer and show producer Smitt E. Smitty featuring a cast of local rockers including; Stirling, Jerry Vile, Hiawatha, Nikki Corvette, Anthony Bojanic, Skid Marx, Chris Girard, Mike Murphy, Rick Mills, Gerald Collins, Dave Rice, Len Von Speedcult, Pat Supina, Dana Forrester and the one and only Jimmy Doom. The All Star Band will be performing classic Detroit favorites for your listening pleasure.
Special guest MC for the evening will be former WDET and 89X DJ Mike Halloran. The Motor City Rah Rahs will also be there cheering the bands on!
The event will also feature a Retro Flyer Art Show featuring old-school flyers and photos from Detroit's rock past.
The night promises to be an unforgettable one with the return performances of so many seminal musicians together again.

SATURDAY (May 6): Belle Isle Conservancy's Koi Festival
Traditionally, the Belle Isle Aquarium’s collection of koi fish have been celebrated at the annual koi transfer. With renovations to the lily pond being made to sustain life outdoors for the fish year-round, the koi transfer will not be held.
In its place, the Belle Isle Conservancy will host an annual Koi Festival, a family friendly event on the first Saturday of May (in correlation with Japan’s Koinobori Festival and Children’s Day celebrated on May 5th). This inaugural event will celebrate Japanese culture and the significance of the the koi fish.

Opening Friday, April 28th Derek Hess returns to Inner State Gallery to showcase an entirely new body of work titled EDP. With a collection of new paintings, drawings, mixed media 8-tracks and three-dimensional works on cardboard, the Cleveland-based artist continues to create emotion and depth through bold lines and form with new works that epitomizes his unique and recognizable style known the world over.
Joining Hess at Inner State will be Detroit’s own Ron Zakrin, whose new body of work Exiles continues to evolve Zakrin’s massive body of work with an ever growing cast of mythical beings and social pariahs reimagined in a modern context.

Executed primarily with pen and ink, much of Hess’ work for EDP depicts dynamic figures and angelic characters in adverse situations. Showcasing Hess’ strong technical skills and compassionate feel of his craft, these new works allow the artist to give fans a glimpse into his own personal struggles.
“EDP is a term used by law enforcement when referring to an ‘emotionally disturbed person.’ As someone who deals with the dual diagnosis of bipolar and alcoholism these issues tend to be subjects of my work, or more precisely the feelings they create,” Hess said from his Cleveland studio.
For Hess’ second solo exhibition at Inner State casual fans and longtime collectors alike are both sure to be surprised by this entirely new collection which features Hess’ first fully refined works created with three-dimensional cardboard assemblage. These new layered works bring viewers one step closer into Hess’ unique world.
“I was drawing on cardboard one day, but I didn’t like the background of a piece, so the idea came to me, why don’t I just cut the foreground figure out, redraw the background on another piece of board, and adhere the figure on top of it? There it was. A figure coming out of the piece and creating nice cast shadows at the same time. I then began pushing the layer numbers creating all sorts of backgrounds, middle grounds and foregrounds,” Hess added.
Bringing new work of his own, Detroit artist Ron Zakrin captures the outcasts, loners and beings that do not fit in with society with new paintings created in the heart of the city. Although a sense of isolation permeates the series, Zakrin’s portrayals are filled with undertones of beauty, motion and humor.
“For this exhibition I will not only be showing new figurative works -- an angel hitchhiking, Satyrs burning cities to the ground, fauns in lingerie, you get the idea -- but there will be a few of my new paintings on tar paper which, unlike my previous works on tarpaper, undergo a surface preparation resulting in a surface quality unlike anything else,” Ron Zakrin said from his studio in Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market District. “I have also been revisiting techniques that have not been exhibited in quite some time so there will definitely be a surprise or two,” Zakrin added.

Ever since seeing a short expose on DetroitPerforms.org of Josie Pace, I was not going to pass up an opportunity to catch her live at a local venue. Whatever it took, wherever it was, I was going to be stealing pixels! Thanks to Small’s Hamtramck, I didn’t have to wait very long. (This was only their second live show…ever…) Bonus points for opening act Ghost|Synthesis, another artist I have been jonesin’ to catch locally. One night… two new artists (to me, that is)… an intimate venue… a few PBRs… perfect.
If you are up for a phenominal voice reaching out from a stellar industrial-vibe provided by Ken Roberts (keyboards/synth) and Mark Damian (drums), mixed with a stage presence that says “…this is what I have to say…“, then catch a show if you can or find them on the web. With top-notch videos already under their belts, a serious eye for fashion and visuals, Josie Pace is Detroit industrial punk eye-candy with a stainless steel ice pick heading for your ears!
While I wanted to steal Jeff Rebrovich/Ghost|Synthesis‘ pixels as well, photos would do absolutely no justice what-so-ever. He is a visually-overloading, aurally-captivating presence that deserves your full attention… or at least a really hi-end video camera. Next time. Definitely next time.

ABOUT REYES PROJECTS
Established by Terese Reyes in 2017, Reyes Projects is a contemporary art gallery in Birmingham, Michigan. The gallery occupies a 4,600 square foot space in the newly-renovated landmark Wachler Jewelry building on Old Woodward Avenue.
Reyes Projects will reveal five exhibitions a year dedicated to emerging and mid-career artists. It is with such presentations that the gallery seeks to reveal a profile both internationally renowned and regional in dialogue. Collaborating with local patrons and institutions alike, the gallery hopes to continue to diversify and strengthen Detroit’s burgeoning arts community.
Reyes Projects will participate in its first art fair, the Dallas Art Fair, opening April 6, 2017. The gallery will present a solo exhibition featuring the work of Jonathan Rajewski, also featured in its inaugural exhibition.
