Clawson Steak House Celebrates 50 Years!

With the demise of the family owned steak house and the rise of corporate greed and pricing for a good dinner its nice to see a long time family run chop house still up and running.

Meet the Clawson Steak House if you have never heard of it...this place rules.

Superior service and ambiance - and the food - Forget about it.
At least 1/2 the price of all the other "name brand" steak houses and its better!

They are celebrating 50 years in business as a family run restaurant - check them out if you can get out to Clawson on Rochester Rd near 14 Mile Rd.

Order the house salad (best dressing in town - sorry Leo's Coney) and anything else on the menu is just as good // steak // shrimp // fish ...
usually a house band plays the stage and the bar is cool to hang with the all age crowd

If you plan to visit them - drop your attitude at the door and enjoy
You are not there to be seen or be in the scene.
Thumbs up from MCB and hopes for another 50 years!

Interview w/ Jon Visger from Mason Proper - NEW ALBUM OUT TODAY!

We were just doing our thing last week by posting a free MP3 from Michigan's Mason Proper
One of our PR peeps hit us up with a freebie to post and before you knew it -bLAMMo we got hit up with an email from Jon Visger - lead singer from MP asking us about our posting.
After a few exchanges we managed to squeeze water from the stone and came up with a mini email interview from Jon about the band - the new record - his girlfriends dog etc..
Olly Oxen Free hit the streets today from Dovetone Records - BUY IT ! you will like it!
The guys have a CD Release show over in Ann Arbor this week at The Blind Pig - all ages show and you get a copy of the new release upon entry - You can't lose kids!
CD RELEASE PARTY WITH THE SILENT YEARS,AND THE NOVEL CITIZEN
$12 / Under 21 $15
( cover includes a cd )
ALL AGES. Doors 8 p.m.
Interview with Jon Visger from Mason Proper
MCB:
Hi John - With the new record Olly Oxen Free hitting the streets
tomorrow and the CD release show kicking off the mini tour out in Ann Arbor MI this week -
How is the band feeling about the reception of the new record?

JVoMP:
We were consciously going into this record thinking, "We're making
what we like, and if nobody likes it, that is completely fine." So
far it's turning out that a fair amount of people like the same thing
we like, and that feels really good. We feel at one with the world.

MCB:
What part of MI do you hail from and name your favorite small venue you
guys like to play here in the metro detroit area?

JVoMP:
We originally assembled from the great white north of Alpena, but now
we call Ann Arbor our home. In Detroit, we've been fortunate enough
lately to get on great shows at the Magic Stick/the Majestic/and the
Magic Bag, but those don't seem like small venues to me. I really
like the Pike Room, if that counts. Their sound guys make everything
crystal clear in a way that is more rare than it should be.

MCB:
Who in the band is most responsible for the initial writing //
assembly // polishing of the songs?
Who usually cracks the 1st beer of theday and gets the most phone numbers by the end of the night at the club?

JVoMP:
I usually hermit up and write a bunch of songs, which we pick and
choose from and iron out as a group. They bounce around for a while
between all of us, and usually I handle a lot of the recording side,
and final changes.

I like that you phrased the second question in such a way that the
person who cracks the 1st beer of the day is automatically the person
who gets the most phone numbers by the end of the night. The answer,
of course, is Henry Winkler, circa mid-1970s.

MCB:
What is your bulldog's name and who does he/she like most from the> band?

JVoMP:
Walter, formerly Pudge, R.I.P. My girlfriend's dog. He never met the
other guys, but he probably would have eaten their shoes. With their
feet still inside. Legs, etc.

MCB:
You are playing the CMJ Showcase for Dovecote Records in NYC coming up in late October - how has it been working with Dovecote the past year or so?

Did you steal anything from the house where you recorded the new record?

JVoMP:
Working with Dovecote has always been fantastic. They're our good friends at this point, and are as patient as we are with everything, which is important when you're starting out.

The house we recorded in was empty except for some construction
supplies, so there wasn't much to steal. The owner did give us a free
bag of charcoal for Zac's grill. He also was supposedly going to get
me a free guitar from his friend who built them. The neck was made
out of metal or something. He didn't know anything about guitars, but
he assured me you could jump on the neck and it would not break, so he
figured it must be a good one. He never came through, but I heard he
designs weapons systems now.

MCB:
Your quoted as saying "This album is born of the same internal madness as the first, only now the layers have been lifted. The core of our band is exposed, to be loved, hated, or ignored." - with the reviews of the record through the roof and exposure of the band higher than its ever ...

its probably safe to say that Mason Proper will be loved by the masses... your thoughts?

JVoMP:
Nobody's ever safe in this climate. They can turn on you like THAT.
I just don't think anybody's automatically entitled to anything with
art, and I never take it for granted. It's really exciting that
people are paying attention, but I'm mostly just proud of the actual
thing we have created, that I can hear it without wishing it was
different, and what we've become as a group of people, because nobody
can take that away.

MCB:
Is there anyone you hope to see at the CD release show at The Blind Pig?

JVoMP:
David Bowie. He's like the spectral harbinger of indie success.
David Byrne would also suffice. Give me validation, oh Davids!

These people are not coming to the Blind Pig. I think my friend David
is coming though. He will do. I hope I see him. If there are about
20 Davids there, I think that is about the equivalent of one David
Bowie or Byrne.

MCB:
What are Mason Proper's plans for 2009?

JVoMP:
New album. Better than this one. New tours. Bigger than this one.
Start exercising. Drop 10 pounds, 15 times; subsequently disappear.

MCB:
Thanks for finding MOTORCITYBLOG and best of luck to you and MP with the new record.
WE DIG IT!

JVoMP:
Thank YOU! Ramen time.

WILD AT HEART - Monday Sept 22nd 2008

Kirk - Here is today's blog post for MCB - Wild Bill
Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

I had a great time at the People’s Art Festival at the Russell Industrial Complex this past Sunday.

I was there representing WXOU at the MOTORCITYBLOG table and I want to thank all the people who stopped on by and said ‘Hi’, including my newest myspace friend, sexy Sandy from Ferndale, lead singer Christina of Bricktown Station and everybody else. The festival was a nice mix of local music (including great sets by Rogue Satellites, Sultry Surfers of the Apocalypse, Innerphonic, Joan Of Arc and Los Minstrels Del Diablo) and art by a number of talented local artisans.

They also had a movie screening room (MICHIGAN MOVIE HOUSE) which ran locally produced movie and some old Corman films. The best was a Mexican wrestling movie called “Enter Zombie King” (aka Zombie Beach Party). This is one of the funniest movies I have seen in awhile. Ulysses, a professional wrestler, is going to watch his old partner Tiki fight in a match where he will go up against a horde of zombies. During the fight, one of the waitresses is killed by a zombie and Ulysses, with his friends, decide to take matters into their own hands and track down the creatures. The movie boasts music by the Tijuana Bibles, a cameo by WWF wrestler Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart and just a lot of cliché ridden dialogue that just seems to work for this film.

The event was made to coincide with the grand opening of the Russell Bazaar which is hoping to become a destination for shoppers though I am not sure it succeeds. The place isn’t finished just yet but a number of vendors have opened up shop. There are some unique artist areas but the other shops don’t really offer anything that you can’t get elsewhere which I think will be what holds it back. While having places that sell beanie babies, carpeting and hair products isn’t bad, I think the bazaar needs 3-4 unique stores that offer products you can’t get elsewhere along with the art galleries. Loco’s and Niki’s are not yet open and will hopefully be so soon. My favorite shop was the Future Gallery which puts together a mix of local art and music so look at the online and check them out. I hope this experiment works out but by fear is that is will not be unique enough to maintain a lot of traffic. I hope I’m wrong.

I had the pleasure of seeing a wonderful theatre production this week with the Detroit debut of “Say Goodnight, Gracie” which will be playing at the GEM until Nov 16th.

The man lived to be 100 years old and along with his one true love, Gracie Allen, became a star of vaudeville, radio, TV and film. “Say Goodnight, Gracie” is the Broadway play starring Joel Rooks which allows us to look back at the life of a man who is fondly remembered for his work with Gracie as well as his portrayal of 'God' (a role he remarks that they were looking for someone close to his age to play him). The play starts with George Burns at the time of his death where he is in limbo and must perform a one man play of his life to be able to move on and be with his Gracie. Rooks does a wonderful job capturing the essence of Mr Burns along with his signature cigars. He looks back upon his impoverished, plucky youth on the lower East Side of New York, his disastrous but tenacious career in Vaudeville, the momentous day when he meet a fabulously talented young Irish girl named Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen and their instant chemistry, their marriage and joint rise to the pinnacles of Vaudeville, Movies, Radio and Television and his life in movies afterwards.

The show is a multimedia presentation that also features the vocal talents of actress Didi Conn as Gracie Allen as well as music and film of George's life, including some material with Gracie and his best buddy Jack Benny. George seemed to have the perfect life with great friends, a wonderful lover and successful career. The play, written by Rupert Holmes (yes of "Escape, The Pina Colada Song" fame) does a great job bringing George to life in a play that shouldn't be missed. I talked with Joel who agreed with me that without Gracie, George might never had been a star which is seen by the fact even though it is a one man play, the bits showcasing Gracie's material get the biggest laughs just like they did in real life. This is one of the best plays to come through the area. Grade: A+. Go to www.gemtheatre.com for more information.

I also saw the movie Ghost Town, not to be confused with the 1988 horror western, this new 2008 flick is a romantic comedy which happens to have ghosts. David (Stir Of Echoes) Koepp directs as we are introduced to misanthropic dentist Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais). The films tagline is “He sees dead people... and they annoy him”. He is not a people person by any stretch, alienating co-workers and the people in his apartment. After a near death experience after a simple operation, he gains the ability to communicate with ghosts which he doesn’t want. One ghost, Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), is particularly persuasive and tries to get Pincus to help him break up the impending marriage of his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni), putting him in the middle of a supernatural love triangle.

Pincus doesn’t want to help but finds himself attracted to Gwen so he gets involved with her life to end her relationship. Things go south when she gets suspicious of some of the personal things she does and Pincus decides to make himself worthy of her by helping out the ghosts take care of their unfinished business. It's not as bad as it might sound since the movie does avoid many of the clichés that could cripple a movie of this kind. Kinnear is his charming self while Gervais does a great job in being an aloof human being. He develops a nice chemistry with Leoni which makes the film a great movie to take a date to. Grade: B+.

Another big event this weekend was the Ferndale DIY Festival. I was down there part of Saturday, mainly checking out some of the musical acts. One of the acts I enjoyed was Paul Green’s School Of Rock which is basically a place where young kids can learn how to be Rock N Roll stars. The documentary ‘Rock School’ was based on the school and the film “School Of Rock” has been said to have been influenced by it. Either way, they did a Rolling Stone tribute this week including such songs as ‘Bitch”, Wind Horses, and ‘Tumblin Dice’ and many others. If this sounds like fun, you can check out there AC/DC tribute show on the 27th and 28th at Main Street Billiards. They also have shows dedicated to Led Zeppelin, 80’s tributes and Motley Crue vs Gun’s N Roses. Check them out at www.schoolofrock.com

The other thing I learned in Ferndale is the Detroit Curling Club is looking for new members. Believed to have been invented in medieval Scotland, the word derives from the verb ‘curr’ which describes a low rumble the stone makes when it moves across the ice. The first world championship was played in 1959 and won by the Canadian team from Regina, Saskatchewan. The first curling club in the United States was organized in 1831 only thirty miles from Detroit in Orchard Lake, Michigan. The Detroit Curling Club started back in 1885 and you can learn more about them at www.detroitcurlingclub.com

Curling is a team sport with similarities to bowling and shuffle board, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice. I played a bit while at Bowling Green and it was a lot of fun. They also know how to party so if interested trying something new, give them a try.

Lastly, come to the Crofoot on Friday, Sept 26th where WXOU (more info at www.wxou.org ) will be having a fundraiser with special musical guests The Wild Years from Ann Arbor. Check out there music at http://www.myspace.com/wildyearsmusic and then get ready to come out and get some free swag at event. Also meet your favorite DJ’s, such as Wild Bill (which is me) and Nick Rorick among others. Doors are at 9PM. The Wild Years have a sound that seems like a mix of Andrew Bird and the Flaming Lips that one reviewer described as a blend of “chilly electro-dance and hazy folk-pop”. It should be a fun show so stop on down to Pontiac and check it out.

I will also be having Americana singer Sally Spring on my show that morning talking about her upcoming show at the Trinity House on Sept 26th.

PJ's Lager House Lineup

We ran into PJ from Lager House yesterday over the MCB booth at PAF...
He filled us in on the great lineup this week in particular and wanted to extend an invitation to all our readers to come on out and hang at PJLH.
Its been a year now that PJ took over the corktown staple and after lots of fix up work and the challenges that new ownership brings he is happy with the last 365 and looking forward to many more...With a "no-cover" shows (unless noted) and cheap drinks he has seen many bands who promote themselves properly walk out the door with 4 figure payouts.
We usually would pick 1 show from the PJLH lineup and post it but this week in recognition of PJ - Carrie - and rest of the LH staff (Hey Karen!) we raise our glass to you!
Here is the lineup for the week:
All shows 21+ and no cover unless otherwise noted.
Monday, September 22 - TONIGHT!!!
Jambang (f/Greg Ginn of Black Flag and SST Records) & the Taylor Texas Corrugators
10pm
If you missed it the first time around, don't miss it this time!!! Greg Ginn had such a good time last time he came through Detroit back on June 16th, he's already back again. You thought a man who was in Black Flag would only be all about punk and metal, eh? WRONG! Don't miss this night you thought you'd never see (again)… it's a long way from Henry Rollins. Jambang is the latest project in the Greg Ginn (of SST Records and formerly of Black Flag) catalog of sound. Jambang offers listeners a hybrid of electronic and organic instrumentation. Ginn mans both the guitar and the electronic sections. The group's debut release, Connecting, is the result of an eclectic blend of artists and musicians united by the common thread of their love of jambands and improvisation. Ginn's other group, The Texas Taylor Corrugators, will also be playing. Their slogan, "I'm not really a redneck, I just play one on TV" sums up this country style rhythm and swing band. They provide a toe tappin' backdrop to the usual suspects of Texas Swing.
Tuesday, September 23
The Terrible Twos w/The Intelligence, Druid Perfume
10pm
The Terrible Twos are one of the main components of local label X! Records—frantic, straight-up punk from this Detroit five-piece. Get your face blown off and then some; go to the bar for a $3 Jameson shot and be back for more. "You're like getting electrocuted," they were told by a Green Bay fan. The Intelligence are dancepunk, garage, lo-fi, no wave and, above all, energetic and loud. Their music sounds simultaneously claustrophobic and uncontainable with tight rhythms and relentless vigor butting up against pounding drums and fuzzy, echoing vocals. The effect is a peculiarly harsh but satisfying final product. They're noisy nursery rhyme melodies in a synth-punk dungeon. Druid Perfume is a four-piece from Ferndale that fits straight into the evening's kickass lineup. You will have a good time watching, if not participating in, this three-pronged Tuesday night freak show.
Wednesday, September 24
Freak Juice
10pm
Freak Juice is a band that is pushing the boundaries of traditional rock music by infusing jazz, hip-hop, reggae, blues and the art of improvisation into a new, fresh and invigorating wall of sound. Each member of the present line-up is a seasoned professional with many years of experience on stage as well as in the studio. Tori Ruffin, the bands founder and chief visionary, has said that although he has been fortunate enough to work with some of the biggest names in the music bizness, he feels even more fortunate to have found the newest additions to the Freak Juice family. This group is based in part out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Thursday, September 25
SRC Thursdays with Gary Quackenbush
10pm
$4
Come down to PJ's Lager House every Thursday in September for a rocking good time with Detroit rock legend Gary Quackenbush! Quackenbush is a founding member of the venerable SRC and will be playing the SRC hits and other classics live onstage every Thursday. Many of the songs are featured on his first solo album, GQ In A Shade of Blue, out on SRC Records. Don't miss this chance for an intimate brush with Detroit rock history! The first twenty people in the door get a free CD-- choose from five different SRC releases. This is a fantastic deal for only $4... a live show AND a CD.
Friday, September 26
The Budget Sinners w/The Mantons, Rachel Brooke
10pm
$5
Local group The Budget Sinners is fronted by Detroit veteran Tim Pak (ex-Salt miners, Angry Red Planet) on vocals and guitar, features hard-hitting drumming from Ryan Looney and the bass playing of Ed Sertage. Eric James Myers, previously of Warhorses, brings the licks on lead guitar. The Budget Sinners are funtime Americana. It's time to break out the whiskey. The Mantons are lean and mean. Nobody has ever given them an inch; they probably never will. That's because people are afraid of a band that tells it like it is. But, in the end, The Mantons Do The Thing That Must Be Done. They are Here, for You. Enjoy. Rachel Brooke comes armed with an acoustic guitar, dusty and seemingly timeless vocals. Brooke minds Old-Time Country & Folk in her own sweet irresistible way!
Saturday, September 27
The Cetan Clawson Revolution w/The Pack AD, The Straightbacks
10pm
Folks just can't get enough of The Cetan Clawson Revolution. Twenty-year old Clawson is a true rock and blues virtuoso and the bassist and drummer aren't anything to scoff at either. Come out to see him—you truly won't regret it; this guy has amazing skills. Clawson may be the best rock'n'roll guitarist in North America at this time. The Pack AD is a female two-piece from British Columbia. They take life on the road, Civil War stories, coffee and cigarettes, and stir them into a vicious concoction of garage rock and Jack Daniels then boil it alive in the blues. This Vancouver duo strikes with a raw, hell-torn, blues-rock swagger that is equally contemplative and unflinching. The Straightbacks are a youthful hard-hitting five piece from Holly; a perfecting mix of The Strokes, Interpol and Lee Marvin Computer Arm
(We caught PJ in the crowd last night at CCR closed out the PAF2008 - nice!)

"The Night Move" - Affordable Uptown to Downtown Green Shuttle Service - Launch Party @ WAB - Thur Oct 9th

MCB got a call from the folks over at "The Night Move" today and they filled us in on some the details behind metro detroit's newest form of green transpo - a biofuel-shuttle service!

"I have some positive news for you that's going to be really big for bridging the gap between downtown and suburbanites. I'm writing to tell you about the Night Move (www.thenightmove.com), metro Detroit's new shuttle service.

The service will run from Royal Oak to Ferndale to Detroit and back every weekend night.

The plan is to encourage people and by proxy, commerce, into the city by targeting those who are hesitant to venture down on their own, for reasons like the hassle of driving and their safety concerns about going into the city alone and leaving a car unattended. We'll also save people gas money and help the environment, both by being a carpool-like alternative to individual vehicles, and by running on B20 biodiesel." - Jennifer Harlan from The Night Move

There is a launch party coming up over at The WAB in Ferndale which will showcase the top secret BioBus which is getting its final touches at the ol' paint shop:

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL GOING ON TOUR

Band Set to Release“Heart On” on October 28th via Downtown Records

Currently breaking hearts and bottles in the southwest, Eagles of Death Metal are getting ready to seduce the rest of the country. The band is in the midst of successful, co-headlining tour with The Hives, much to the delight of Texans, Californians, and Arizonians everywhere and to the disappointment of everywhere else-ians. But have no fear, rest of country - new tour dates have appeared! Eagles are ready to strike a city near you like a swift karate slap to the jugular. After unleashing “Heart On” to the masses, the courageous cast of characters will hit the open waters on the first headlining tour for the soaked-in-sexy new album.

The EODM formula for fantastic is humm…let’s see…that’s one part Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes, one part Joshua “Babyduck” Homme. Stirred and served chillllled in a tall glass of class. It goes down smooth every time. Earlier this year, the two captains of the EODM starship left their underground lair 16 kilometers below the earth’s core to lay down a dozen new rumpshaking, rock hard rock tunes. The Dream Duo recorded in Burbank, Los Angeles, Boise, Fargo, and Amsterdam, and were joined by fellow magicians Miss Kat Von D, Brian “B.O.C.” O’Connor, Darlin’ Dave Catching, Alain Johannes, Troy Van Leeuwen, Brody “Queen Bee” Dalle, and Kim “Koko Bubbles” Martinelli.

Look out for the album’s first single “Wanna Be In LA” – a tale that confirms the gospel of Boots Electric and Babyduck… that selling your soul for Rock n Roll is totally worth it.
