You can help keep our soil and ground water safe from harmful chemicals released by e-waste simply by bringing your old electronics with you! Just look for Recycling for Charities and their eco-friendly Smart Car. And don't forget, you can also write these donations off on your taxes!

All donations will benefit Recycling for Charities and their efforts to fight the e-waste epidemic while supporting non-profits across the nation.

Wild At Heart

Went to a number of cool concerts last week including a rocking set by Wishbone Ash and the frantic guitarmanship of Guitar Shorty who has played with such luminaries as Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. I also had fun interviewing Linde of both HIM and Daniel Lioneye and Australian pop star Sia. Linde was promoting Daniel Lioneye's newest album entitled "Vol II" which is more hardcore than HIM's sound with some more bluesy instrumentation. Linde started off doing acid-jazz and while enjoying touring and recording with both bands, his dream is to go back to school to learn jazz guitar. When not touring, he enjoys relaxing at home in his suburban home in Finland with his lovely wife, his dog and four Sphinx cats. Sia will be in town on April 26th with the rockers Girl In A Coma and will be in support of her fifth studio album titled "We Are Born" that is coming out in June. She enjoys her two dogs, sunshine and TV and plans on bowling at the Magic Stick complex when she comes to town. She also is on the new David Byrne album who she met at a Lou Reed/Laurie Anderson led benefit in Australia. This week I will be interviewing Cherie Currie of the Runaways so make sure to also check in for my Sat morning radio show on WXOU 88.3FM or www.wxou.org.

On April 7th, the Magic Bag will have a free preview of the new movie "The Runaways" about the life of the legendary girl rock band which spawned the careers of Joan Jet and Lita Ford. Lead singer Cherie Currie is in town and will be part of a quick Q&A afterwards. I will be reviewing the movie next week.

If you remember last year I was in downtown Detroit for the filming of the newest Rob Schneider epic "American Virgin" about a freshman college girl (Priscilla) on scholarship from an abstinence group that guards against sex until marriage. She is roomed with the sluty Naz who takes her to a campus party where she inadvertently gets drunk and is filmed topless by "Chicks Go Crazy". She and her friends then travel to Detroit to recover the incriminating footage. The movie went direct to video and I finally rented a copy at a local video store. While the movie itself deserves it's status of direct-to-video status, I wanted everyone to know that I am now a major film star. I have two cameos in the film at the 34:06 AND 47:09 marks for a whopping 11 secs of what might have been the performance of the year. OK, so maybe I am making it sound better then it is, but if you watch the movie look for me in the crowd scenes at those times and you probably won't regret it. The movie itself gets a D+ but it has gives some nice memories. Thanks Michigan film incentives for this opportunity and now I can add this to my SADD PSA and my appearance of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Band of the week: Runaways who are the subject of a new movie coming out. The Runaways were an American all-girl teenage rock band of the late 70's. The band was formed in late 1975 by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett. They had introduced themselves (on separate occasions) to producer Kim Fowley. They started out as a power trio with singer/bassist Micki Steele (later of Bangles fame), The Runaways began the party and club circuit around Los Angeles. They soon added 16-year-old lead guitarist Lita Ford and lead singer Cherie Currie to the lineup. They opened for a bunch of bands including Ramones and Cheap Trick but found real suceess in the summer of 1977 after the group arrived in Japan for a string of sold out shows (They were the number 4 imported music act in Japan at the time behind only ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin in terms of album sales and popularity). Soon after, disagreements over money and the management of the band led to a break up with Kim Fowley and Cherie Currie left the band for other pursuits. The band lasted a bit longer until they borke up and Joan Jett and Lita Ford started their solo careers. They are still among the most rocking of the girl groups and put many guy bands to shame.

an installation of works on paper by Jeanette Strezinski.

The works of Ablation are inspired by a cardiac procedure where a form of energy renders a small section of damaged tissue inactive, ending arrhythmia(s) that originated at the problematic site.

Strezinski received her BFA from Michigan State University and works in Detroit.

She is the founder and director of Detroit Industrial Projects

and her studio is located in the Russell Industrial Center.

The opening reception is Saturday, April 24 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibition runs April 24 through May 15.

In an age of home studios and pre-programmed music, Brooklyn rock band The Beat Hounds believes in the old-fashioned idea of putting on a great liveshow and not being afraid to take musical risks in front of an audience. The power trio of Matt Lenny (guitar/vocals), David Jamison (drums/vocals), and James Preston (bass/vocals) use the recorded songs as jumping off points for high-wire acts of musical exploration.

As guitarist Matt Lenny explains,

“Half the fun of watching a band like Led Zeppelin or Cream is that sense of danger…it’s incredible when a band goes somewhere uncharted and manages to land on their feet. You can’t fake that.”

The Beat Hounds have just finished recording

their eponymous debut album in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The album started when front man Matt Lenny was recovering from a car crash suffered while touring with Chicago art rockers Oh My God. Unable to walk for 4 months, Matt began writing songs as anemotional outlet and a way of reconnecting with the classic rock that had inspired him to go out on the road in the first place. After recovering and returning to Brooklyn, Matt began exploring and recording the songs in Brooklyn’s own Casa Nova Studios. The sessions ultimately resulted in a 10-song album and the new, power trio lineup of The Beat Hounds.

Armed with Matt Lenny’s 60s and 70s influenced tunes and a desire to push the classic rock envelope into more modern territory, The Beat Hounds will be touring in support of the album, which is slated for an April 27th, 2010 release on 180 gram vinyl, CD, and digital download.

Wild At Heart

Just a quick little post about some stuff going on in the world of Wild Bill. I just got off the phone with the singer Sia who is coming to town on April 26th with the hard rocking chicks Girl In A Coma. In the interview, we talk about her dogs, how she met David Byrne and why she was rubbing Anthony Johnson's belly. We also talk a bit about her new album, "We Are Born".

I will also be interviewing the Director of Public Relations for the Palace of Auburn Hills, Jeff Corey, about success of their March schedule and members of the band HIM (Linde and Burton) about their side project Daniel Lioneye.

ULTRA Music Festival 12 SELLS OUT... and MCB was there!

This past weekend, Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27, over 100,000 music enthusiasts descended on Miami’s Bicentennial Park for the 12th annual ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL (UMF), drawing its largest attendance numbers ever for its first sold-out show as a two-day event. This astounding number also marks the first time ever an event has sold out, let alone for two days, Bicentennial Park. The festival was also the recipient of an IDMA (International Dance Music Award) for “Best Music Event” for its fifth year in a row.

We had an MCB guest contributor in Miami check out over 200 international leading electronic music performers, DJs and cutting-edge bands alongside Miami regional artists performed over the two-day extravaganza in addition to the festival’s stellar line-up spearheaded by Friday mainstage headliner Tiësto and Saturday’s headliner Deadmau5.

Highlights of ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL encompassed several guest appearances. On Friday, France’s David Guetta was joined by Lil Jon, LMFAO and the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am and Apl.de.ap, while Felix Da Housecat welcomed Sean “Diddy” Combs. On Saturday, chanteuse Kelis guested with Benny Bennasi for their song “Spaceship” and the Guetta-produced track “Acapella”; Florence from Florence and the Machine graced the stage during Swedish House Mafia’s set; and drummer Tommy Lee along with vocalist Sofia Toufa joined deadmau5 to debut a brand-new untitled song during his closing set. Other special guests in attendance were singer Macy Gray and TV personality Kelly Bensimon of “The Real Housewives of New York.”

UPCOMING SHOW: April 8 - Drive-by Truckers @ St. Andrew's

Coming to St. Andrew's Hall on Thursday April 8th for a headlining appearance are Athens, Georgia's own Drive-by Truckers. Combining ass-kicking rock with Southern sensibilities and themes that resonate with working men and women everywhere, the Truckers have been winning audiences for over a decade. With a new album The Big To-Do, just out, Drive-by Truckers are coming to St. Andrew's Hall to rock Detroit with their unique but familiar blend of guitar-driven Southern rock, and indie/punk stylings and great collaborative song writing. Opening for them in Detroit is Langhorne Slim - at 7pm.

Drive-By Truckers’ The Big To-Do is out in stores On March 16th, and in celebration, the band has released the first of a series of webisodes about each track on the record. First up, in celebration form, is the beautiful number “Birthday Boy.”

Russell Industrial Center is quickly becoming the largest Art Mecca/Small Business Haven in the midwest. Architects, painters, clothing designers, glass blowers, wood craftsman, metal sculptors, graphic designers and the like find the R.I.C. an ideal place to network and exhibit. Russell Industrial Center also plays host to the People's Arts Festival once a year in September and several other art exhibitions. The R.I.C. works with film makers, photographers, local college classes, and is the proud home of two Detroit based art gallery's, Detroit Industrial Projects (DIP) The Cave, ORG, and MONA. I have to admit I was a little intimidated by this assignment, and I don't really get intimidated. For one thing, its the Stone Temple Pilots for f*** sake. That in itself is pretty intense, considering their history and how relevant they are to my youth and college days. Add to that that one of the best concert photographers I know is the one who hooked me up with this, I was feeling the pressure. (Thanks, Gene!) All that being said, I am happy as sh** with the results, and have been flying high ever since their final bow.

Now, here's the deal with the show: In case you missed it, or thought STP was a has-been group of glam/grunge rock and didnt wanna see them, the show effin' rocked! I never realized how much Scott resembles a cross between Mick Jagger's swagger on-stage and Vinnie Dombrowski's (local Sponge) bluesy-Rock-n-Roll voice (that is a compliment to all involved, believe it or not!). Backed up once again by guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz, classic STP revealed itself and all its raw power to a sold out crowd of rowdy teens to reserved grey hairs...and everyone inbetween!

Goddamn I love my Life!

p.s. Opening for the fellas was a band called FAIRCHILD. (I hope this is their MySpace link...I couldnt find anything else.)
