27 pieces of vinyl going to 3 winners donated by local detroit record shops
This coming Saturday is National Record Store Day which is your cue to head on over to your local independently owned record shop and hook in...you know its been way to long since your last visit and with the slow demise of these local gems you are continuing to do yourself and society a diservice by not shopping them as much as possible. You are supporting your community and being a part of the social fabric that is so lacking in this modern age.
These are the places that offer a remarkable wealth of information regarding music and the local scene in general - and they are just a fun place overall to listen to great tunes and become exposed to music that unless you were at your local record store might not have discovered.
MCB took 3 hrs last Saturday to drive around and hit a few of our favorites but by no means was this an extensive exhaustive search - on our trek we noticed at least 2 shops we never even knew about so we wanted to simply remind everyone out there that these joints are important - more important than you may think so get on out this Saturday for National Record Store Day.
Oh - forgot about the freebies - most of the shops we visited provided MCB will not only a hefty discount for the random freebies we purchased but also kicked in a considerable amount of freebies on their own.
We are giving away 27 pieces of new and used vinyl
right now to 3 readers
10th - 15th - and 20th emailers get to split the boodle
we have the winners
thanks to all who entered
please visit your local record store this Saturday
that the elusive locally owned record store still exist in the form of
Record Time Roseville / Detroit Threads Hamtramck /
Peoples Records Detroit / Hello Records Corktown
Hello Records in Corktown has only been open for a few months. They are located on Trumbull just south of Michigan Ave. next on the corner next to a cab company and across from a mini-market. We spoke to Wade, who is the co-owner of this newbie shop on the scene. After a few moments you could tell this guy knew his music.
We were offered some friendly advice from a few local shoppers and within a few moments discovered that we were talking to the founders fo Funk Night Detroit - Mr and Mrs Funk themselves Frank and Nicoles Raines.
We took a few selections to the counter to pay and noticed that the "Funk Night" pile was looking like a leaning tower of pisa it was stacked so high and made our MCB purchase look a little dismal.
Wade must have noticed our concern and donated a few records plus a vintage 45 holder.
One of the albums he kicked in was the only recent and latest Detroit rap records produced in the city - "Untouchable" put out by World One Records in Detroit
DJ ASSAULT
Detroit Threads is located over on 10238 Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. Detroit Threads offers up everything you can think of in a record store and more and even offer vintage clothing plus new stuff from local detroit based creators. Stop in and browse funk, soul, jazz, rock, house and techno plus all kinds of vintage collectibles and magazines. Mikel from Detroit Threads kicked in a handsome handful of freebies for MCB and invited everyone down to the store this Saturday.
They always have time to examine your collections if you are interested in selling.
As usual - Detroit Threads was busy with customers and we spoke with one guy digging in and pulling out the gems he was looking for...
"nothing beats the moment you come across that long lost friend buried in the bunch"
- random Detroit Threads customer

5" vinyl from Shitbirds "Faster and Shorter"
People's Records has had a rough year with a terrible fire that nearly wiped out the business when they were over near WSU campus. They didnt wait long to regroup and have since opened the new store at 3161 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.

People's Records has had a rough year with a terrible fire that nearly wiped out the business when they were over near WSU campus. They didnt wait long to regroup and have since opened the new store at 3161 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.
MCB stopped in and spoke with Michael Hurtt and Steve Kenney who were pretty busy and took the time to talk to us about how things are going at the new location.
Hurtt who plays in a recently relocated country rock band called Michael Hurtt and his Haunted Hearts had high hopes for the store and noted an uptick in business with the weather change.
With stacks upon stacks of vinyl we wondered how such an inventory could be amassed in such little time but you can tell these guys love their jobs and can easily imagine the boys finding those hard to locate collections to supplement the store's inventory.
Stop in and say hello and pick up a few any day of the week.
The Fixtures and many other 45's / LPs were provided by Record Time
plus a copy of The Witches CD and Detroit Entertainment DVD
Record Time in Roseville was where we started off our day in search of motorcity record stores. They have been around since 1893 (actually 1983 but is feels like that long) and recently had to close their Ferndale location to consolidate everything to the one store. With previous locations in Rochester and down the road in Roseville the Record Time @ 27360 Gratiot Ave. in Roseville is a record store customers dream. With everything you could want and plenty of room to spread out and check out the inventory. We spoke with the manager Ray Hayosh who filled us in on this Saturday's planned "Customer Appreciation Day"

MEANWHILE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF TOWN
MCB’s Jesse Welter popped into Solo Records and Street Corner Music this weekend for a little peek at what these to local record stores had to offer
"Everyone at Street Corner Music works here because they love music. That’s not to say that everyone here loves ALL types of music. That’s why we have different people who are into different things, who specialize. WHAT WE ALL DO ENJOY is listening to music and finding music for people.
Owner Chris Flanagan (who also plays in the multi-genre tackling combo of gents going under the names the Volcanos, the Hellbenders, the 3-D Invisibles and others) has been buying and selling choice finds from record swaps and others’ collections.
