It has officially been a week since the 2013 Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Movement, closed out an amazing weekend, bigger and better than ever. The 13th installment of our annual dance music festival was top-notch and we have to hand it to the folks over at Paxahau for putting it all together. The sound was perfect at every stage, accessible and enjoyable at every angle. From the video screens on stage to the community art displays, the visual energy successfully rounded out the entire Movement experience. With the late 2000s rise in commercial and mainstream electronic dance music, or EDM (I hate the term too, but at least they're not still calling it all techno), this year it seemed that Detroit's shining showcase of the deepest underground and true roots were on display with more enthusiasm and excitement than ever. With a crowd from all over the world to support us, Detroit delivered. I met Movement attendees from... Holland, France, Cyprus, New York City, San Diego, Ireland, Toronto, Germany and DETROIT (Metro included of course) Also wanted to touch on the pre and after party scene. The hustle was a little harder this year and I saw a ton of people out flyering, promoting, playing in local bars, clubs, afterhours, abandoned spaces and selling out huge venues like the Fillmore. All of that brings entertainment, fun and yes, of course, money to the area and local businesses. There were so many great parties, I had the pleasure of attending and DJing a few. Support that stuff too, even after Movement... there are so many talented and creative people putting their heart and soul (and their money too) into great things. The Made in Detroit Stage at Movement is an all local lineup, all weekend long. You can see the people that perform on this stage in the area many times throughout the year - we have it good! Make sure you check out Mikel O.D.'s (seriously, how amazing was Nina Kraviz) and Jacob's posts too - the other awesome thing about Movement this year was how well they catered to the different genres - but really seemed to pull out the best for everyone. Mike and Jake are into the fest and into the music and into different aspects of it than I, and each other, are. But we got to share and create our own best experience out of this. Anyone who knocks or lacks experience with the "culture" or the community of this music... well basically we hope to see you Movement 2014. My video highlights and photos:

Many bands have suffered trials and tribulations on their ascent to fame and recognition in history, but perhaps none more notable in recent history than Savannah, GA based Baroness, having suffered an almost insurmountable setback in their tragic bus accident which took place mid-August 2012 leaving many family, friends and die hard fans pondering the fate of the future of these gifted musicians to carry on in the wake of that event. Ever resilient, the band members reclaimed their lives from that day like a phoenix rising from the ashes, more determined than ever before to carry the flame that burned within them to pursue their love of music. Spitting in the face of fate with middle fingers raised in defiance, they have conquered the challenges of recovery and rehabilitation, channeling the fiery spirit of the drive they've cultivated over the years that derives all that is Baroness.
Firing up the Yellow and Green tour again a couple weeks ago in Philadelphia with newly added members Nick Jost on bass and Sebastian Thomson on drums to replace respective former band mates Matt Maggioni and Allen Blickle, they've wasted no time in kicking all the world has thrown at them in the face reclaimed their determination and drive to play their hearts out to the fans who have stuck by them through all the trauma and pain suffered in the past year. Having played on the 2012 Orion Festival last year as openers, they are kicking off the inaugural run of the Orion Music & More Festival here in Detroit as with an official pre-show at Saint Andrews this Friday June 7th on a headlining tour. Guitarist Pete Adams was gracious enough to speak with me over the phone about their return to touring, recuperating, and their triumphant return to the music scene at long last.
Audio Interview
Get yourself down to Baroness in Detroit this Friday at Saint Andrews Hall Friday June 7th for one of the most powerful live music shows you can experience and hear for yourself the magic and energy that they put forth. Their music is ethereal, engaging and elicits an insightful, spiritual interrogation of your life, the kind of music you want to listen to on your back deck, headphones on cranked to ten under a clear sky and full lit moon to reflect on life. It will be one of the highlights of the Orion Festival weekend here in Detroit.

Our old pal Marc Nischan was kind enough to hook in again and check the fantastic JD McPherson last week over at the Magic Bag in Ferndale
If you haven't found your way to picking up JD's new record please do so now
Tell them MCB sent ya
Thursday night marked the second time JD McPherson has played the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI. The last show was absolutely amazing but Thursday night’s show proved that JD and Co. rock the house every night.
There are a ton of bands in what I’ll loosely call the vein of “Americana,” whether that’s rockabilly, roots country or just straight rock’n’ roll. What really makes this band stand out from a sea of really talented bands is the masterful way that they handle the dynamics of the songs they perform. From the haunting, mellow roll of the title track Signs And Signifiers to a full on rave like Scratching Circles, the band can turn up the energy or dial it back to keep the crowd eating out of their hands for the whole show.
JD McPherson has criss-crossed America and touring in support of Signs And Signifiers and even kicked off 2013 with a tour in Europe before returning to the U.S. and it’s no wonder that they’ve earned the bragging rights for having the most-played album of the year on Americana radio according to Rounder Records.
McPherson and his band appeared on Conan, the Late Show with David Lettermanand the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences all over the country and are slated to play the Bonnaroo music festival later this year. What I’m really looking forward to is another killer album from JD, and although there’s no official info about upcoming releases, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that there was a new album out by this time next year.
Carolyn Striho will be performing Saturday night, June 15th at the
legendary Callahan’s Music Hall in Auburn Hills, Michigan with Rio Scafone &
The Rockabilly Revival and the Carolyn Striho Group
Rio and band are amazingly
intense and their music is spot-on! Together, they plan a resurrection of rock
and roll soul at this fantastic club, with both full bands promising a really
neat night!

Wild At Heart
Still getting back to normal here. Got tickets for the LPGA here in Rochester and looking forward to seeing the Lumineers this Friday (they are playing Pine Knob on Thursday). I had the enjoyment of seeing a great folk artist this past week by the name of Shawn Phillips who was known for his great albums in the early 70's as well as work as a session artist for Donovan. He has also worked with Clapton, Winwood and the Beatles (appearing on the song "Lovely Rita"). His later work crosses into rock, clasical, funk, etc and he has managed to put out an amazing collection of music without ever achieving the success he deserved. He traveled a lot which opened up his horizons to musical trends in other countries like England, Italy and South Africa and his growing musicianship blended well with his ambitious songs (similar in a way to artist Van Dyke Parks and Leonard Cohen). Here is a cool song by Shawn.
I'll leave you with a suggestion for a few cool shows for the week, esp the Onion Music Festival which also includes Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Belle Isle a cool week after the Grand Prix.
Tuesday (6/04) - Calexico w/Joe Pug @ Magic Stick, Huey Lewis and the News @ Freedom Hill
Wednesday (6/05) - the Sights w/School of Rock @ the Crofoot, Secret Twins @ PJs Lager House
Saturday (6/08) - "Orion Music + More" (featuring Silversun Pickups, Rise Against, Dropkick Murphys and more) @ Belle Isle Park, Blueflowers and Fur @ Loving Touch (Ferndale), Styx and John Waite @ Freedom Hill
Sunday (6/09) - "Orion Music + More" (featuring Gogol Bordello, Rocket From The Crypt, the Dirtbombs, and more) @ Belle Isle Park

Boner & The Neudge is a slapstick play about two morning disc jockeys who are super focused on rock music; rock music and only rock music from the 80's. Starring Josh Campos, Brian Papandrea, Jen Bloomer, & Scott Vertical this is a fun play about dick jockey personalities and their clash with corporate radio. During a commercial break it is clear that their act is put on to some degree to attract listeners. They are ordered to play cruel pranks on unsuspecting listeners like a woman who was arrested in Omaha and kept breast feeding her baby, or a man who is losing his wife to multiple sclerosis. The station manager is a slithery character fond of saying cheesy current sayings like that was total amazeballs and hashtag is his eternal go to phrase. It is worth checking out. 1xRUN Archive Access Open NOW! Ends Sunday at Midnight EST
It has been far too long since we have cracked open the archives here at 1xRUN, so after all the madness from our first two shows at Inner State with Glenn Barr and Ron Zakrin we are excited for our first Archive Access in nearly 7 months! We have plundered the bins of our recent returns, exchanges and long lost prints as a part of this collector appreciation weekend.
INNER STATE Presents: SURVIVE Detroit Pop-Up Art Show
Traveling art show makes a one night only stop in Detroit's Eastern Market
On June 8th, Inner State Gallery will present SURVIVEfor an one-night-only, pop-up art exhibition in Detroit's Eastern Market. The traveling exhibition comes to Detroit after a highly successful premiere in New Orleans last April. This event is free and open to the public.
SURVIVE is an art exhibition featuring a conceptually coherent and significant, original body of work by emerging artists of the L.A. based graffiti crews LTS KOG featuring artwork by SINER, FISHE, DREYE, KYLE THOMAS, and NATHAN SMITH. The artists work from the same monochromatic palette mixing ink, acrylic, markers, brush, rollers, and spray paint to produce 33 3 x 4 ft. canvasses.
SURVIVE has consciously chosen Detroit to follow up the New Orleans' debut of their traveling exhibition to provoke a dialogue on the transformative power of art. These cities represent not only the everyday struggle to survive, but to be great again. We all struggle to survive at some point in our lives. This struggle can be a unifying force that forges a shared vision and identity. However, the struggle itself is incredibly temporary when compared to the lasting durability and enduring spirit of our cities.
"By inviting street culture purveyors and art audiences to the showcase of emerging artists at a formerly vacant structure and now transformed 'pop-up' gallery space, the concept, the process, and the art reinforce the purpose: SURVIVE", says the curator, James W Riley.
The abstract work of the LTS KOG crews on the street translates directly across surfaces, textures, and contexts onto the canvass. The fearless originality and brutal honesty of their works creates a dramatic composition that reflects an aggressive obsession with technique and medium. The distinctively raw aesthetic results in something chaotic, yet beautiful.
The opening reception is Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 7p.m. to 11p.m. The show runs for one night only, and is located in the Eastern Market at 2431 Orleans St. Detroit, MI 48207.
With over ten crew members traveling to Detroit along with the exhibition, guest will be able to meet the curator, participating artists, photographers and documentary makers. A series of public murals will be produced near the venue that reflects the aesthetics and message behind the art exhibition.
