TOPS

TOPS are a four-piece band from Montreal, equal parts girls and guys, delivering a raw punk take on AM studio pop. Their new record, Picture You Staring, is a lush array of timelessly crafted songs. Picture You Staring gathers strength through intimacy. Self-written, recorded, produced, and the result of 12 months holed up in Arbutus Records' Montreal warehouse. This album contains 12 impeccable examples of pop craftsmanship that will reward repeat listeners.

Jane, David and Riley have equal footing with their respective instruments and their sparring exceeds the imagination of any individual. For their new record TOPS have enlisted Madeline Glowicki to play bass. Like Jane and David, Madeline grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and went to the same elementary as Jane. A natural musician, and contributor to the Editorial magazine, the band are happy to have another prairie girl on board. LA based painter Jessica Dean Harrison created the artwork especially for the release. It is a conceptual interpretation of the record's title, continued in a large poster depicting a group scene, included with the purchase of a vinyl record.

Back To The Future Hearts Tour! Nov. 6th at EMU Convocation Center

SLEEPING WITH SIRENS drive right to the core of that place inside that connects people through music. Kellin Quinn’s intimate vocal revelations arrive drenched in a warm vulnerability that has stitched fans around the world to the band. Even as their penultimate album, Madness, promises to crack the mainstream wide open, the band remains steadfast in their determination to keep things welcoming (and sheltering) to the people who’ve been there since day one and the ever-increasing number of new fans alike.
Madness, frankly, is an unashamed masterpiece of melodic pop rock perfection, driven by an undercurrent of punk aggression and beautifully tempered by an overwhelming soulfulness and sensitivity. Together with Quinn, guitarists Jack Fowler and Nick Martin, the rhythm section of bassist Justin Hill and drummer Gabe Barham forge a vibrant musical collage in songs that serve the powerful audience connection SWS celebrates.
Even with 102 million streams, 83 million music video views, millions of social media followers, 80,000 tickets sold on the first leg of The World Tour (nearly ever show has sold out since 2012, including two nights, in advance, in London in 2015), mainstage appearances at the UK’s prestigious Reading Leeds festivals, over 700,000 in combined album sales and a #3 debut on Billboard’s Top 200, SWS maintains a firm grasp on their musical identity, with an authenticity that draws bigger and bigger crowds.
“The biggest foundation for all of us in the band is to stay true to ourselves,” declares Quinn. “We all sleep well at night knowing these are the songs we believe in. This is the music we want to put out there for the world. With Madness, our focus was in putting out an album like the ones we grew up listening to, the music that changed us.”
Fowler concurs. “We’ve all grown-up as songwriters and as musicians,” he says. “There’s a lot of new, different sounding stuff, but we still maintain our roots. It goes from the most punk rock sounding stuff we’ve done to the prettiest ballad we’ve done. We wanted to give everybody a taste of everything we do – the short, fast punk songs, the pop rock songs and the emotional ballads. It’s the best album we’ve done, hands down.”
Produced by hit-maker John Feldmann (Good Charlotte, Panic! At The Disco), Madness is an electric celebration of all that is SWS and everything they represent.
“Kick Me,” which went to #1 on Billboard’s Trending 140 Chart, boldly declares confident defiance in the face of would be bullies. “We Like It Loud” may very well dominate rock radio, even as it will assuredly elicit massive sing-alongs in theaters. More than a lowest common denominator celebration of sound, the song goes deeper, championing the disenfranchised in the way rock anthems do best. “Better Off Dead” confronts the feelings of hopelessness that drive young people to self-harm, offering the perspective of people who lived through it and grew to lead fulfilling lives after school. Alternately, “Madness” is a ballad as delicate and timeless as the most evocative songs of rock’s greatest bands, an optimistic and earnest love letter to a fallen loved one.
Quinn takes pride in the fact that Madness is a filler-free affair. Not one track is skip-worthy. “Every song has a place, a home, and feels like it belongs on the same album with the other songs,” he says. “You can play the album front to back, all 13 songs, and it could all flow as a live set. It starts with something ‘in-your-face,’ then keeps the momentum going, before it slows down for a few, then we bring it all back up.”
The nonstop social media buzz, the Alternative Press recognition as Artist Of The Year, it’s all emblematic of the groundswell SWS built at what feels like a lightning pace. Alternative Press, Rock Sound, Kerrang!, Outburn and Blunt regularly feature them on the cover. The devotion of the SWS faithful is potent and palpable every time Quinn’s voice ascends to his signature banshee-like wail on record, in videos or live on the stage.
“We’re a very tight knit group,” explains Barham. “We have the same ideas about everything, as far as the direction that we’re going.”
Quinn’s incredible voice and the easygoing affability of all five guys endears them to a diverse audience, people more friends than fans, people who connect with the band’s energized tales of childhood woe, tender love letters, and direct encouragements to seize the day, triumph over heartache and pushback against the hater brigades. No matter how big Sleeping With Sirens becomes, they haven’t backed down from offering only the most courageous examinations of what they are as people and as a rock band.

Sleeping With Sirens is on the road with All Time LowNeck Deep and ONE OK ROCK on the Back To The Future Hearts Tour!

SHOW REVIEW and INTERVIEW: DOYLE at the Token Lounge in Westland

The Misfits put the "Punk" in Rock just as much as The Beatles put the "Rock" in Roll. Even so both bands ended up breaking up before their time, the legacy and impact they have left behind on the music genre is everlasting. Last week Motorcityblog had the pleasure to catch the band DOYLE featuring legendary Misfits member Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein on guitar as they were plowing through their 2015 Abominator tour.

The band is touring behind their 2013 album "Abominator" and doing it on a D.I.Y. level. The album is self released on Doyle's own Monsterman Records and the band is funded by a lot of touring and not by all those Misfits T-Shirts that you see at Hot Topic. Doyle isn't going to rest on one's laurels anytime soon and is out to bring his music to as many people that he can.

We caught up with Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Alex Story of DOYLE before their performance at The Token Lounge in Westland to discuss the new album, touring, fans, and some Misfits tidbits. Here's how it went down....

With 10 minutes to spare till the band hit the stage after our interview, we positioned ourselves to be in the heart of the action. Blood, sweat, and slam dancing come into play when you are right up front, but that is just icing on the cake when it comes to a great live performance.

DOYLE opened up with the title track off their album Abominator and the energy level was high right from the start. Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein is a beast when it comes to his guitar and he brutalizes it into submission. Anyone wondering how Doyle stays in such great physical shape just has to watch the man perform live to see a full workout before your eyes. "Learn To Bleed" and "Land Of The Dead" from the new album followed quickly in succession before re-visiting Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein's past with Misfits songs "Queen Wasp", "Ghouls Night Out", and "Skulls".

Any vocalist singing Misfits songs that doesn't have the last name Danzig tends to receive a lot of criticism. From Michale Graves of the reincarnated  90's Misfits to Jerry Only from the current version of the Misfits, the negative statements flow easily out of peoples mouths. It's a tough position to be in, but Alex Story does his best. He comes off as someone who is not trying to imitate anyone and totally respects the music he is lucky to perform. Alex has his own identity and earned his credibility with me before Doyle due to his work with his other band Cancerslug. The guy is no amateur and gives it his all on stage. The band is rounded out by Left Hand Graham on bass and Brandon Pertzborn on drums who played their parts as close to perfection as you could ask for.

The band DOYLE plays the punk/metal blend perfectly and has the live performance to back up the source material. By the end of the band's one hour set, they had performed every single track off their "Abominator" album as well as more Misfits songs that included "Green Hell", "Devilock", and "Last Caress" among others. DOYLE is a force to reckon with and a "not to be missed" live act when they come to your town. They are currently on tour till December 1 and a new album should be out by Spring of 2016.

Want to see what went down at the DOYLE show? Look no further than here because Motorcityblog has you covered....

Show Review: TORRES Opens for Garbage in Detroit

Words: Sue Static; Photos: Peter Schorn - RockOutShots.com
Singer-songwriter TORRES made her Royal Oak debut opening the show for the alt-rock band Garbage on Monday, October 19 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. The Nashville musician is on a joint American tour with the Garbage to promote her second album “Sprinter” on indie label Partisan Records.

Fans of her music and people who arrived to the concert early were treated to TORRES short but powerful opening set. She walked onstage wearing black coveralls and duck boots with no intro or greeting and the band launched into the set with the song “Mother Earth, Father God” from her debut album. Her six-song set started out mellow and understated, but ended in a fury of sound with the song “Strange Hellos”.

Her low alto voice was reminiscent of early Patti Smith and Johnette Napolitano at times and her humble stage demeanor definitely won the crowd over. When she announced how important opening these shows were to the band, she was met with a round of applause from the audience. Garbage later repaid the compliment stating how great it was to have TORRES share the stage with them and that big things were in store for her career and that “You saw her here first.”

She performed songs off her two albums including a powerful rendition of “Sprinter” the title track off the new album. TORRES certainly gained new fans at this show and for those of you who missed it, it is your loss!

TORRES original music was a perfect match as an opener for Garbage. She invokes her music with a moody, edgy tone that captures the essence of the band's early work. It's no wonder the band selected her for this joint tour. She recently recorded a cover of the band's 1989 song “Special” in advance of the tour. You can check it out here.

To check out more information and music from TORRES visit http://torrestorrestorres.com
