TIM KASHER (of Cursive and The Good Life) LIVE

Time
Friday, August 19 · 8:00pm - 11:00pm
Location
The Pike Room - 1 S. Saginaw Pontiac, MI 48342

More Info
Tim Kasher released his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy, on October 5th, 2010 of last year via Saddle Creek. Recorded in Whitefish, MT, at SnowGhost Music and in his rental home in the small town, the album marks the first time Kasher – frontman for celebrated acts Cursive and The Good Life – has written, recorded, and produced an album under his own name.

The Game Of Monogamy is more of an arranged record than any of Kasher’s past releases, filled with theatrical arrangements and lush instrumentation to create his own blend of classic pop. Ornamented with strings, harp, oboe, flute, and trombone, among other instruments, the songs vary in sound from vibrant and catchy (“Cold Love,” “I’m Afraid I’m Gonna Die Here”) to sweeping and grand (“No Fireworks,” “Monogamy”), and from hushed and spare (“Strays,” “The Prodigal Husband”), to urgent and fraught (“A Grown Man,” “Bad, Bad Dreams”). This moody orchestral pop evokes a 1950s-esque, conservative atmosphere, setting the stage for a dilemma that remains thoroughly modern. The protagonist’s arc in The Game of Monogamy spans the wide range of distinctly human emotions tangled up around relationships in a starched shirt society. Call it the score for our collective sexual plight: expression routinely becomes repression in the name of romance.

Kasher enlisted Patrick Newbery (trumpet/keys for Cursive; also of Lacona and Head of Femur) to help with the arrangements, the production, and to play on the record. Friends Erin Tate (Minus The Bear) and Matt Maginn (Cursive) also stopped by to add some drum and bass parts, respectively, and members of the Glacier National Symphony were recruited for the classical instrument parts.

Cursive, Conduits, and Cymbals Eat Guitars at the Blind Pig March 27th

Tim Kasher of Cursive
March,27th 2012
Blind Pig
Ann Arbor, MI

What can I say about Cursive that I haven't said before? They start a fantastic set and ended it with as much energy as they had from the beginning. There's not much I can say that I haven't said before, they're in sync and share the passion of the band together as a team. As a good band should, but this band has been this way since the start. They've realized a long time ago that if you're not making the crowd move, or you're not throwing that energy out there, then that's the result of not putting enough effort out there. Those people should notice you're giving just as much energy in the song as much as the first time you played that song.

Conduits and Cymbals Eat Guitars are hands down, the best bands that are out right now making music. I haven't heard any "great" new music lately. It's been more or less "okay", or "average". But these bands, I didn't expect to have such an impact on me the first time I see them. From vocals, lyrics, to the drummers and bassists. They all really played their part in making that show a spectacular event.

SHOW REVIEW / ILLUSTRATIONS: Cursive live at The Subterranean in Chicago by Von Ecker

Cursive is back on the road again touring for their album “ I Am Gemini ” ,and this time they brought a little harder sound with Mastodon and Isis producer Matt Bayles.

They stopped through Chicago at The Subterranean, which can only be described as a venue staged in a double decker matchbox. Maniacs hung from the rafters high on indie rock and $4 PBR’s. The band pulled off a solid set at the packed venue, that was a sea of bodies in constant motion.

I actually witnessed a little mosh session in progress, which made drawing my sketches a little bit of a pain in the ass but hey that’s rock and roll.

Tim Kasher of Cursive

Its nice to see that after 20 years together Cursive still has the creative energy and stamina to still be putting out quality indie rock music that still keeps its edge. After seeing what I saw Friday night the band is set to blow up at the end 2012. They currently just landed on tour with Minus The Bear which is set to kick off on Sept 10th and doesn’t end till mid November.Motor City Indie Rock lovers will have to trek it out to Grand Rapids to see the boy’s on September 18th @ The Intersection.

So save your pennies boys and girls and trek it out to see the hardcore boys from Omaha, Nebraska rock it out, and remind you why indie rock isn’t fading away anytime soon.

FREE VINYL: Conduitswith CURSIVE - The Blind Pig Ann Arbor - 3/27

MCB has a few copies of the latest vinyl release from Conduits who are on tour with MCB favs CURSIVE and hitting Ann Arbor in a few weeks -- email motorcityblog@earthlink.net  for your shot at the wax and get to this show! http://www.blindpigmusic.com/

Conduits (whose S/T LP is out 3/20 on Team Love) are embarking on a US tour with Cursive and Cymbals Eat Guitars, and they'll be in Ann Arbor at the Blind Pig on 3/27
 http://www.facebook.com/ConduitsMusic

It's an understandable and easy shorthand for a group that prefers darker, dreamier sounds carried to the apex by a female vocalist who sounds haunted and enraptured. And it's a descriptor that this Omaha-based sextet wouldn't necessarily mind as they do list Jason Spaceman (Spiritualized, Spacemen 3), Beth Gibbons (Portishead), and Slowdive among their varied musical inspirations.

Truth be told, though, shoegaze only scratches the surface of what's behind the music of Conduits. These aren't affected youth staring at their guitar pedals and hoping that the audience in front of them would just go away. This is music that pulses and crackles with energy and incident.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Let's talk about how this all started.

The original Conduits demos were the creation of JJ Idt and Nate Mickish, two guitarists already busy in the Omaha music scene with their anxious pop and rock outfits. Working together, the pair found much more to express than just inner angst. They were aiming for soundscapes that embraced drones, psychedelia, and a fervent rhythmic punch. And the more they played the more they heard a female voice filling in the empty spaces in these songs.

Enter Jenna Morrison. Best known for her work as a member of indie rockers Son, Ambulance, Morrison brought that rare combination of attainability and remoteness (think: Gibbons, Hope Sandoval, Trish Keenan, Sandy Denny) to her vocal performances. It was the perfect element to help spark these already tempestuous creations into full-blown blazes.

The band - rounded out by bassist Mike Overfield, keyboardist Patrick Newbery, and drummer Roger Lewis - has taken off like a shot since those first demos. They've secured a number of amazing support slots in their hometown, sharing the stage with acts like The Hold Steady and The Appleseed Cast, as well as doing a short, well-received jaunt opening for Bright Eyes.

Now, Conduits is looking to take on the rest of the U.S. and beyond with the release of their debut self-titled album. The eight-song dreamscape flows with a cinematic ambition. Songs like "Top of the Hill" and "Limbs and Leaves" provide the soundtrack for slow motion dance scenes, while "Last Dirge" and "Misery Train" are all fast edits and racing hearts.

The point here is for you to stop starting at your own feet, and cast your eyes towards Conduits. Enjoy the spectacle. Get caught in the whirlwind of sound and ideas. Move with them.

Catch them Tuesday March 27th in Ann Arbor at The Blind Pig

Tim Kasher - Blind Pig Ann Arbor - Sun 11/21

Tim Kasher's debut solo album The Game Of Monogamy is another example of the solid Saddle Creek Records roster. Already renowned for his literate and thematic songwriting with bands Cursive and The Good Life, the album is Kasher's first release under his own name.
The Game Of Monogamy is more of an arranged record than any of his previous releases and has been catching the attention of the press, including Alternative Press (4-star review), Spin, USA Today, The A.V. Club, and Filter, among others. The album - filled with deceptively catchy classic pop, sweeping, grand arrangements, and alternately stark and lush instrumentation - explores the wide range of distinctly human emotions tangled up around relationships in a starched shirt society. The Game Of Monogamy was written and recorded in Whitefish, MT, last winter, co-produced by Kasher and Patrick Newbery (of Cursive, Lacona, Head Of Femur; who also helped with the arrangements and plays on the record). Erin Tate (Minus The Bear) and Matt Maginn (Cursive) also contributed drum and bass parts, respectively, and members of the Glacier National Symphony added classical instrument parts.

MORE FREE CDs: 4 pack of singles from Azure Ray

1st emailer gets a 4 pack from Azure Ray
Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor are Azure Ray
After several years of solo and other projects, Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor are once again touring and recording as Azure Ray. Following a one off show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles this past November, Azure Ray are planning their first run of US dates in over five years!
The tour starts tonight in Portland and runs through Omaha on July 24, where they will play a free outdoor show with Cursive and Flowers Forever.
Orenda Fink has spent the time off from Azure Ray recording a solo record (Invisible Ones, 2005), while also forming two separate band projects, Art In Manila (Set the Woods on Fire, 2007) and O+S (O+S, 2009), Maria Taylor has released two solo records for Saddle Creek (11:11, 2005 and Lynn Teeter Flower, 2007) and one for Nettwerk (LadyLuck, 2009).
Following the tour, Orenda and Maria plan to use the fall and winter months to begin writing and recording the fourth Azure Ray full-length for a tentative 2010 release.
Azure Ray - Summer 2009
Fri-Jul-10, Portland, OR, Mississippi Studios
Sat-Jul-11, Bellingham, WA, The Nightlight
Sun-Jul-12, Seattle, WA, Neumos
Tue-Jul-14, San Jose, CA, Nickel City Arcade
Thu-Jul-16, San Francisco, CA, Great American Music Hall
Fri-Jul-17, Santa Barbara, CA, Velvet Jones
Sat-Jul-18, Pomona, CA, Glasshouse
Fri-Jul-24, Omaha, NE, Wild About Omaha at Slowdown
On Hold on Love, the ladies’ third full length album, Azure Ray lets out an eloquent, reverberating, satisfying breath. As a departure from 2001’s self-titled debut and 2002’s Burn & Shiver (both released on WARM Records), as well as 2002’s November EP on Saddle Creek, Hold on Love was built on a bold approach — taking the ethereal aspects of Azure Ray’s past work and mixing them with a more upbeat and enlivened technique.
Still so visceral and intimate you can hear lips pulling apart and piano hammers striking, Hold on Love travels theaurally deeper road with layer upon layer of all-encompassing sound. And where love and loss dripped from each word on past albums, Hold on Love finds hope to round out their message.

Orenda and Maria arrived in Omaha
via Athens, Georgia.
True southerners at heart, their music can’t help but sway and smolder like neo-American gothic balladry. Longtime producer Eric Bachmann (of Archers of Loaf and Crooked Fingers) was a key collaborator on the way to Azure Ray’s newfound breadth. Building three-dimensional
soundscapes around the nucleus of each song, Bachmann deftly enhances the soulful harmony and subtlety at Azure Ray’s core. Bachmann also arranged the warm, splendorous strings that cascade across the album.

Making it a combination of efforts, the production was assisted by Andy LeMaster and
Mike Mogis. LeMaster, whom Orenda and Maria record with as one half of Now It’s
Overhead, engineered and mixed Hold on Love along with the help of Presto!'s
own Mike Mogis (producer for Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint). Hold on Love also
features drum programming from The Faint’s Clark Baechle on “The Devil’s Feet” and
“We Are Mice.”

The showering strings that first wash over us with force and urgency on “New
Resolution” continue their gentle deluge on the “Drinks We Drank Last Night,” as Hold
on Love explores the ups and downs of the human condition. From the melancholic
sentiment of “Look to Me,” (a nuanced lament on the perpetuation of a bad situation) to
the waltzing “Sea of Doubts” (asks am I living the life I should be living?) the record let’s
you know it’s okay to move on in its own, eerie way.

Orenda and Maria toured with Moby last year,
and collaborated on “The Great Escape” off Moby’s 18.
Azure Ray is on tour now and do not hit Dietroit.

WEDNESDAY
MAY 6 2009
Cursive/Man Man @ the Magic Stick

My girlfriend met Jamie (aka Critter Cat... I guess) of Man Man about eleven years ago on AOL instant messenger, and he has evidently been looking forward to the day that they would meet ever since. Hurray for technology, using our combined internetting skills we were able to set up just such a meeting at Man Man's show on Wednesday. We walked in as Man Man was beginning their set of crazy stage antics, dancing to bird calls, forcing non-instruments into making music, and general unorthodox everything. Heavy rhythms set by a maniacal drummer and matched by a churning piano and a slew of bizarre noises.

We sipped vodka tonics and sat near the rear of the dance floor as I was less interested in seeing Man Man for a third or fourth time and more interested in meeting them. I could feel the floor shaking from the frantic dancing happening in front of the stage, a fairly rare occurrence at the Magic Stick. The madness on stage was on par with the handful of other times I had seen them, including such antics as pouring a bottle of water into a wooden bowl held next to a microphone, a muffler somehow miked and used as a snare, and running back and forth to a table piled with eclectic instruments.

Man Man's set ended and my girlfriend wandered around to the back of the stage to chat it up, I was distracted by fellow Motorcityblogger and photographer Amy Palomar and also by a former roommate who was quite upset about a rumor that I had started about myself. After about thirty minutes standing around the new pavilion thing that was built off of the dance floor I wandered to the backstage. In the tiny blue room behind the stage I found my girlfriend seated between two completely smashed girls, one who claimed to be from some southern state I don't like and another who had a tattoo of a child's drawing on her leg. The room was littered in half drank bottles of whiskey, about fifty beer bottles, two or three coolers filled with fresh brews, and an odor of various smoked substances. Critter Cat was desperately trying to mack on my lady friend, but also trying to give me some good info to blog about.

(All I got was that they were making enough money to pay the rent and that he also likes Giorgio Moroder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Moroder )

I missed Cursive's show for the most part, but the southern bell wandered onto the stage toward the end and was quickly pulled off by the singer of Man Man.

Afterwards we hung around the Garden Bowl bar for a few minutes while the bands packed up their equipment where we met a trio of double dude-bros who were very excited for the show they had witnessed. One is in a band that I promised to mention called Ten Ton Diesel Head (myspace.com/tentondieselhead) who has a new album coming out soon, their first in nearly six years.

THURSDAY

The Kills @ the Magic Stick

Johnny Retro from everyone's favorite band the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre invited me to attend the Kills and go out for some drinks afterwards. I didn't go.

SATURDAY
MAY 9 2009
Rock & Rummage @ the Belmont

We here at Motorcityblog had a booth at the latest installment of Rock & Rummage, and thanks to everyone who attended and supported the local vendors of avant-guarde swag and doo-dads. We had a free raffle where we gave away tickets to Gogol Bordello, Prodigy, and Blue October to name a few. We also had some swag of our own including some rad T's designed by yours truly, buttons, pins, and a load of stickers. A brief conversation with Casey, the mind behind the madness, reveled that he has done this over 400 times in about 5 years!

It was a fun night of tiny green beers
Everlasting Gobstoppers, and general Rocking and Rummaging.

Andy Shauf
Darker Days
*** out of 5
www.myspace.com/andyshauf

The newest offering from Canadian artist Andy Shauf is a soft and reflective album of mellow folk music. Most tracks feature a quietly picked accoustic guitar, Andy's warm honey voice and maybe a tamborine to keep the beat. There is a definite similarity to the freak-folk-artist-turned-Christian-Jesus-touting singer/songwriter M. Ward. Twangy suburban folk music with floating, flourishing guitars and oooohs and aaaaahs chirping occasionally in the background. It is not necessarily a sad album, but I don't think that it could rightfully be called a happy album by any means. Darker Days treads a fine line between up and down, it could maybe be described as capturing the same vibe as Harold & Maude. The album gives off a vague reminiscence to sitting in the sun or falling asleep in a field or waking up a hour before your alarm goes off.

TIM KASHER (of Cursive and The Good Life) LIVE

Tim Kasher does it again with a great performance of his new solo album "The Game of Monogamy".
He also just released an EP called Bigamy: More Songs From The Monogamy and performed new songs off the EP. And to make the night extra special the crowd of fans sang 'happy birthday' to Tim. He still rocks out with all he's got, and looks awesome doing it. Tim will be touring for a couple weeks. Check out the tour dates after the kicker.  To make the night more memorable, he played some covers. Not just any covers, but an Elvis Costello cover, a Cursive cover, and also a Good Life cover. All done remarkably and insanely fun to listen to. The whole band had on "Woodward Dream Cruise" shirts to show of their love for the ever so popular Dream Cruise. While we were stuck in between new and old cars coming to the show, it ended with a beautiful night at the Pike Room.

Check out photos and video of the performance in this video of the song 'Cold Love'.
