Bar Brady's Friday Drink Recipe - VERNORS SAKETINI

Well - its Friday and that means another fabulous installment of Bar Brady's Friday Drink Recipes and this one sounds just right for a blizzardy friday lunch like today...enjoy!

Vernors Saketini

One of Detroit’s healthy and delicious classics.
Well not really a classic or to healthy
But still.. its’ got booze and Motor City roots - enough said.

One bottle of good sake
¼ cup fresh chopped ginger
Two liter bottle of Vernors ginger ale
Some ice

1) Drop you chopped ginger into the bottle of sake.

Let it infuse in fridge over night.

2) Fill your pitcher with ice

3) Pour in ½ bottle of gingery sake. Stir it up.

4) Strain sake into Mason jars (that means sake no ice)

4) Add Vernors to taste.

Tips:
Try adding a strip of crystallized ginger for a garnish
(chew yellow stuff comes in bags)
I’d stick with the regular Vernors on this one
Diet will make the drink too bitter

MOTORCITYBLOG READERS RULE!

Got this the other day from a reader who snapped this shot outside Art Battle 08

Thanks for looking so proud besides our makeshift signage .... you are so much cooler than our sign! haha!

along with the pic was an email that went something like this....

"....unlike most other event focused websites in Detroit, MCB seems to appeal to a very broad range of readers.....the listings are across the board and other than the pure desire to provide promotion of "fun events" it doesn't seem to have an agenda driven by one specific type or style of entertainment plus you guys are not selling anything of yours or your friends to boot - are you for real?"

Well - yes we are missy! For real as a wet dream so uncurl yourself from the fetal position and wipe that suprise off your face! MCB is sending you a suprise pack of PROMO CDs just for putting up with that smart-ass remark. Keep on reading! Thanks!

SHOW ME MORE OF THESE AMAZING MOTORCITYBLOG VIDEOS PLEASE!!!

here are some great photos from the show of health from a reader of MCB

Check this review from MCB's roaming on call show-goer Jeff Nolan:

DANCE FOR YOUR LIFE!

Crystal Castles, Health, & Charlie Slick @ the Magic Stick

Tuesday Feb 26by MCB contributor Jeff Nolan

Arriving fashionably late, I tragically missed my friend Andy's band Charlie Slick. Charlie Slick is a very unique band to see live becausein addition to Charlie's electronic beats and chirping into the mike,Andy dances about operating a light tower, a strobe, a smoke machine, and a bubble machine while throwing glitter and confetti all about. Andy is leaving the band after two or three more shows, so if you areinterested the next to last time to see Charlie Slick as they are is Friday, Feb. 29 @ the Corktown Tavern.

Health is a noise-punk band from LA with a sound reminiscent of theLiars or Le Fly Pan Am. Their songs build off of crazy noises emittedfrom distorted guitars and stomping primal drum beats. To this they addodd timing changes, screaming vocals, and a lot of energy on stage. They played tightly and all members were fairly on point, but it waslacking some thing or element to really bring it all together. I metone of the guitarists and the drummer and while they didn't have much tosay, they were both very friendly.

After the Health set, the entire Magic Stick went dark for a minute orso before some electronic noise started coming through the PA. After itbuilt up for a while Crystal Castles flipped on the strobe lights andlaunched straight into a song you couldn't help but dance to. It wentvery much like this for the rest of the show. Crystal Castle consistsof a keyboardist who plays catchy hooks over a steady drummer and a girlrunning around the stage and into the crowd who occasionally providessome vocals. I've never seen the bouncers at the Magic Stick pull theband members away from the audience before, its usually the other wayaround. The entire dance floor was sweaty and moving with peopledancing more enthusiastically than the band, also usually the other wayaround.

Overall it was a great show, made better by all the fun people there, amillion random friends I bumped into, and on top of it the bartendergave my lady friend and I free drinks.

Awesome.

A Slow and Steady Drip [trailer] – SuperHouse Pictures (01:02) "A Slow and Steady Drip" is about a businessman who takes a business trip, leaving his wife to deal with a leaky bathroom faucet. The leak serves as a metaphor for the issues in their marriage. The script for "A Slow and Steady Drip" originated from a screenwriting incubation program called Project LightStand. http://www.superhousemedia.org/
LaughcrY [trailer] – TriOmega Productions (01:08) Written and directed by Matthew Peach. Some memories return in an instant, with focus sharper than the clearest photo. The people who’ve affected our lives never really disappear. YASAMIN spent eight years dodging a single question. When she unexpectedly runs into ex-lover LENA , will she finally get her answer? Stifled in a loveless marriage almost by default, will Lena forgive Yasamin for leaving all those years ago? They’ll throw their lives into chaos for a chance to find out. www.myspace.com/triomega
Chicken Sushi – Rich Jackson (01:30) Written and directed by Rich Jackson, “Chicken Sushi” is a spoof TV commercial that appears in the feature mocumentary, "Making Buttprints." Jackson designed and animated the chicken character, recorded the chicken and announcer voice, and also composed and performed the "Asia-billy" theme song. “Chicken Sushi” won the "People's Choice" award at the 2007 SEMAFX Animation Showcase. It was also chosen as a first round finalist for Steven Spielberg's "On The Lot" TV contest and was screened at the 2007 Detroit River Days Festival. "The Norm" was originally produced as part of the National Film Challenge -- a film competition in which teams from around the country must write, shoot, and edit an 8-minute film in just one weekend (with certain requirements). There were four elements that SuperHouse had to work with were: (1) Character – Cheeks, a celebrity impersonator, (2) Prop – bubble wrap, (3) Line – “It’s impossible not to look,” and (4) Genre – comedy. Also screening is a behind the scenes of “The Norm.” http://www.superhousemedia.org/
Disease Island – Vendetta Studios and David Lehre Productions (08:27) Directed by David Lehre. A ridiculous and hilarious take on reality TV shows like “Survivor.” http://www.davidlehre.com/
American Piety – Mass Effect Productions (29:00) Directed by Steven Karageanes. This award-winning short takes a comedic look at what happens when a misguided man with more faith in his iPod than God gets hit by a car and goes to purgatory, and the only way to get back to Earth is choose a religion from three speed-dating sessions with Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. "American Piety" is packed with action, wit, and even tango dancing. With a top-notch original music soundtrack, "American Piety" will provoke thought as well as laughs. PHOTOs - DWIFF Kickoff Party 2008

MOTORCITYBLOG was invited to attend The Detroit Windsor International Film Festival Kickpff Party this past Tuesday over at The Majestic Cafe...it was a great event to celebrate the cross border film festival and was sponsered by InZero.

"Did you know the Detroit has the third largest production capacity for film in North America? Just behind LA and NYC..... Many of us don't realize that 40% of national commercials in the 80's were produced here, in Detroit."

The Detroit Windsor International Film Fest held it's Media Release Party on Tuesday February 12 at the Magic Stick in Detroit. the entertainment was provided by Prophecy Productions and featured all local talent such as ER, River Grass, and Pony Boy. Former Senator John F. Kelly spoke about creating a new industry and making things that deserve to happen, happen for Detroit.

With recent tax incentives from Lansing bringing productions like Transformers our way it's the perfect time to show case our talent.

A call for entries has already started, with submissions from as far away as Brazil, and will run until April 1st. The DWIFF is unique because it will actually take place between 2 countries, another thing only Detroit can do!

The University of Windsor, Wayne State, CCS, Detroit Film Theater, Scarab Club and areas of GM's headquarters will be used to showcase the Festival's events June 26 - 29, 2008.
With talents such as Susan Janik (In Zero), Norm Wagner (Hair Ball), Scott Paul Dunham (Creative Energy Alliance) and MaryAnn Haney, this promises to be the Film Event to be attending in 08'.

DWIFF is a non profit and is accepting sponsorship, in kind donations and volunteers.

Friday February 15 - March 10, 2008

Who Wants Cake Theatre
The Ringwald Theatre
22742 Woodward Ave
Ferndale, MI 48220
248-556-8581

First Sunday February 17th is PAY WHAT YOU CAN!!!

**BUG contains nudity, adult situations, and cigarette smoke**

"Bug is a dark (and often funny) thriller set in a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, where Agnes, a divorced waitress with a fondness for isolation and cocaine, is hiding from her ex-con ex-husband. Her lesbian biker friend, R.C.,introduces her to Peter, a handsome drifter who might be an AWOL Gulf War veteran. They soon begin a relationship that takes place almost entirely within the increasingly claustrophobic confines of her motel room. Peter begins to rant about conspiracy theories and government cover-ups. His theories engulf Agnes and the tension mounts as mysterious strangers appear at their door, past events haunt them at every turn and they begin to battle an onslaught of tiny bugs. Tracy Letts's tale of love, paranoia, and government conspiracy is a thought-provoking psycho-thriller that mixes terror and laughter at a fever pitch."

Live Photos - Ether Aura - Crashing Cairo - The Satin Peaches - UsvsHer - Exposure Detroit

MOTORCITYBLOG was down at The Magic Bag (where one of our readers got a pair of tickets and a CD prize pack from all the bands on the ticket) to talk with everyone and take a few photos....MCB's own Amy Palomar had this to say after checking out some of the motorcity's talent up on stage:
"The night was filled with great Detroit rock at Crashing Ciro's CD Release Party this past Friday at the Magic Bag in Ferndale.
Opening band, Ether Aura performed "I wasn't Her" off thier new CD Semblance. Haunting lyrics and soothing melodies create this stripped down and refined version of Americana.
The Satin Peaches built up the nights energy with "Well well well well". I can't help but hear echos of Dinosaur Jr. You must see this band live...or get a free download....Keep up with their popularity
Us vs HER came out strong with La La Lah. Sara Celina's almost confessional lyrics tell a compelling story. Definitely one to watch."Monday Changed Everything" answers any question you may have. Yes, they belong on the charts.
Crashing Cairo gave a stadium sized performance and I am glad I was there to experience it."

FREE SCREENING: Premier Screening: JOE LOUIS: AMERICA'S HERO, BETRAYED - Gem Theatre - Tues Feb 12th

Premier Screening: JOE LOUIS: AMERICA'S HERO, BETRAYED
Tuesday February 12th 2008

FREE SCREENING - CALL FOR RESERVATIONS!!!

333 Madison St
Detroit, MI 48226
(313) 963-9800

"On Saturday February 23, and in honor of black history month, HBO Sports will be present its poignant documentary JOE LOUIS: AMERICA'S HERO, BETRAYED, a touching retrospective of the life of the legendary boxer and his tremendous impact on segregated America.
Louis was the original crossover athlete, a star in both white and black America, at a time when the country was falling into war and desperately needed heroes. When the "Brown Bomber" entered the ring, the world stood still. His 1938 defeat of Germany's Max Schmeling was interpreted as democracy's defeat of Nazism, boosting public morale and transforming Louis into a true American hero.

Joseph Louis Barrow began life as the grandson of slaves in Lafayette, Alabama, and ended up holding the world heavyweight title for 11 consecutive years, successfully defending it a record 25 consecutive times. In the process, he became the poster boy for the American way of life who showed the world what a person of color could do if given the opportunity.
Later in life, Louis maintained his dignity through several setbacks, including serious financial trouble with the IRS. He died a poor old man in Las Vegas, supported with a monthly check from Frank Sinatra.

JOE LOUIS: AMERICA'S HERO, BETRAYED debuts Saturday, February 23 on HBO. The documentary will be seen 8:00-9:15 p.m. ET; the PT debut will begin at approximately 9:00 p.m., immediately following the live HBO Sports event "World Championship Boxing: Wladimir Klitschko vs. Sultan Ibragimov," which begins at 6:30 p.m. PT.
A special premier screening will be held on February 12 in Louis's home city of Detroit at the Gem Theatre."

REVIEW from Jeff Nolan of MCB:

TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF!
Tim Reynolds @ the Crofoot in Pontiac
Sunday Feb 24 by MCB contributor Jeff Nolan

Tim Reynolds is happy for Valentine’s Day. In the middle of a long sethe paused between songs to shout this at the audience in his heavy German accent. I have no idea why he felt the need to make this proclamation ten days after Valentine's day, but it made about as much sense as the music he played.

Tim Reynolds' sound could be describe as a sort of mash up of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai, and maybe Foghat or Bob Seger. His set was mostly an excuse for him to bust out incomprehensibly fast guitar solos and mumblein broken English between songs. The musicianship of both Tim Reynolds and his band TR3 was phenomenal, but the music was overly technical and bland. As disinteresting as it all was, the sound quality in the Crofoot was great.

The show was entertaining, but for the wrong reasons. I enjoyed the bassist and his awkward attempts at dancing, listening to tim say things in between songs, and a strange, discordant selection of covers including Sex Machine, Purple Rain, and Whole Lotta Love with the Stairway To Heaven solo mixed in. I was supposed to interview TimReynolds and company for MCB, but after seeing the show I was a little creeped out and left the show in a hurry.

MCB: The Gore Gore Girls were signed by Bloodshot in Feb 2007...how have things changed for the group?

AG: Get The Gore was released on Bloodshot Records in June of 2007, actually. The recordings were done at Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorders studio in two parts, most in April of 04 and then finished in the Summer of 05. We toured with an EP that had some of the songs from the album on it in 2004, with The Cramps. Recording with Jim is always fun, he's a great man to have at the board.

MCB: GGG hit the road hard this past year, 1st over at SXSW then Electric 6 and finally another stint to end the year playing with SCOTS....what was the best and worst of the tours?

AG: The Electric 6 is a machine, and also truly nice guys. We had a blast with them. Their crowds are different than anything we've played to before, which was an experience. In December we had shows with Southern Culture on the Skids, that was incredible. SCOTS are a great, great band and super rad people. We had a great time... kind of too much of a good time, really. Our last show with SCOTS was at the Orange Peel in Asheville where they were being filmed for a movie. A SCOTS show is always crazy; they invite people on stage to dance and have fun. I was lucky enough to guest on guitar with the amazing Mary Huff, which I'll not soon forget!

MCB: When I listen to "Where Evil Grows" and think back to "Mama in the Movies" there is just no comparison - Can you highlight some of the factors contributing to the maturity of the songwriting/group?

AG: I love "Where Evil Grows"! I had that 45 when I was a kid. Terry Jacks has an interesting musical history, the Poppy Family released some very unique recordings. There is a song called "There's No Blood in Bone" that is creepy and wild, too kind of like WEG. It was a challenge to record that song. Eric Stollsteimer (Freddy & The Four-Gone Conclusions, Mondo Mod) played electric citar and Michael Maltese ( Fortune & Maltese) played keys. The first GGG 45 was recorded in a glass shop in Redford, MI, our old bassist's brother's shop, and in probably under 30 minutes. Both examples of stellar, grade A Rock N Roll!

MCB: How is the relationship going with Gretsch Guitars and why are they the axe of choice?

AG: Hammer and I have played Gretsch guitars for years, my first was a 65 Gretsch Corvette, Hammer has a 60's Gretsch Rally Custom. Bo Diddley knew what he was doing, Gretsch rules! I hope to get my hands on a Gretsch Princess one day. Now I play a 6136 Gretsch White Falcon and Hammer has a Gretsch Silver Phoenix prototype. Her guitar is one of two made, the other was sent to Brian Setzer for his approval.

MCB: What is the best part of returning to the MOTORCITY after being on the road so much?

AG: Friends, my bed, a clean bathroom! We love it here, there is really no other place on earth like Detroit. For better and for worse!

MCB: Who are the Gorettes?

AG: Gorettes are a hand picked lot of the finest singing and dancing ladies in town. The backup singers on the album are Casey Dawson, Nikki Corvette, Loretta Lucas and myself. For stage, The Lucas Sisters and Aran Ruth are core Gorettes. They performed with us for our record release parties in Detroit and in Chicago last year.

MCB: What does 2008 hold in store for GGG? Will there be a new record and will it be recorded in Detroit?

AG: Gore is doing it's first show at the University of Michigan on February 15th! We haven't been back to Ann Arbor in awhile so naturally we're excited. Spring 2008 GGG heads to Europe for a full month's tour of Scandinavia and Western Europe.

MCB:Finally - GGG will be heading to Denmark for a few shows in May 2008 - How do you think the rececption will be to motorcity music in Denmark and will you eat at Polish Village Cafe or Roma Cafe before jumping on the plane?

AG: I will eat at Polish Village Cafe AND Roma Cafe this weekend. You can't get enough of a good thing :)

Thank Your for the Interview!

MCB: Thanks for your time and have a great show here at The Crofoot!

wsg/ Ether Aura - The Satin Peaches - Us vs. Her

"Come celebrate the release of their new "Monday Changed Everything" album on Saturday, February 8 at The Magic Bag in Ferndale. Crashing Cairo friends Ether Aura, who have just released their Semblence EP, bring their new, stripped-down Americana sound to the party while Island recording artist The Satin Peaches and Us vs. Her round out the bill.

CC's sound takes a raw, dirty approach sounding like Radiohead, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, R.E.M. and Nirvana in a blender.

The band had already been going down that musical path when keyboardist Dan Denton died tragically last October.

“Dan had recorded all of his keyboard parts for the new album before he passed, but he was playing guitar too,” said lead vocalist Robert Wax. “When we hear him on tracks like See, we’re not only reminded that he’s still with us, in a sense, but also that he could never be replaced.”

REVIEW - Small Plates Royal Oak

Things we like......
Small Plates Royal Oak
310 S. Main St
Royal Oak, MI 48067
248.543.3300

Small Plates new spot on Royal Oak's Main Street of eateries.

From start to finish a really delicious, if a touch decadent affair. Knowing Small Plates was opening in Royal Oak was enough to send my saliva and taste buds tingling. Having been to the Detroit location a few times I knew I liked their style already.
The portions are not very small, perhaps only in comparison to today's "supersize" steakhouses and the like. The menu is brief and perhaps lacking a little bit on the specials side but all in all there is something for everyone.

But I am getting ahead of myself. When you first walk in your senses are enveloped in warm chocolaty colors, the glow of a fiery pizza oven and a very eager to please staff including Doug, the manager. The night my guy and I went there the entire upstairs was booked for what seemed to be a wedding shower. The downstairs tables were full, so they offered us a spot at the downstairs bar, with full service of course. Before we could finish our Hendricks Gin Fizz & Small Plates Cosmo with Ketel we were soon obliged with a coveted upstairs table and took the elevator instead of the staircase.

And I'm glad we did. Upstairs is a very cool large seating and bar area with more of the same warm colors and fantastic greenery with hundreds of votives which may have had to do with the private party. In the back is another semi-private seating area that looks to be set for use as a VIP or large party area. Nonetheless, it was nothing short of a stunning visual and feeling.

The overall effect is a hip lounge, yet very warm and inviting. Front façade is all windows allowing the lights and sounds to spill in from the street. The only thing missing was some type of artwork on the walls but they just opened so maybe in time they will display some of the great artists who work in the area up on the walls as many other restaurants have been doing.

Quickly as we sat down and made ourselves comfortable our waiter, Scott, came over and greeted us like good friends. He explained the menu and I pronounced that I knew exactly what I wanted. A Greek pizza to start - which honestly was my least favorite item--nice try but it needs more pepperoni and veggies in general. 2nd was the seared scallops--very very good but the noodles it comes with could also use a little help.
Next, the premier item the petit filet was a tribute to perfection--seasoned and cooked exactly the way I like it including crispy fried potato strings on top. This was the decadent part of dinner indeed as every bite melted away - hats of to the chef!
We also ordered the Panko Shrimp and Mushrooms; my partner commented that the shrimp sauce it was served with could use a little more fire to it but otherwise was very good and the mushrooms were exactly what you want to eat with the bread basket provided at no extra cost. Each item was served with perfect timing and courtesy by the well oiled runner machine who took pride in every new plate placed at our service.

Overall, it was a great dinner. I would like to see a few special entrees, like braised short ribs on the menu. I do recommend giving them a shot for a date or dinner with friends or private party.

And we especially can't wait to return to the upstairs bar on a sultry summer evening when the live entertainment that "coming soon" will spill out onto the patio seating out front, down on Main Street. -JDP

Jukebox the Ghost Live Photos from MOTORCITYBLOG

Jukebox the Ghost played a show last thursday at the belmont in hamtramck so we sent one of ours over to share a few drinks and take some photos of the band as they passed through the motorcity promoting the new record
"What could make a Pre-Med student stop wanting to be a doctor? How about selling out an 800 person venue and turn away at least 100 more for the release of your first CD? That's what happened with there first CD "Live and Let Ghost".
Ben Thornwell (piano, vocals), Tommy Siegel (guitar, vocals) and Jesse Kristen (Drums) create this piano driven Grunge-Pop group. The three met in college at George Washington University in Washington DC. Each coming from diverse back grounds.
Ben is a classically trained pianist from Kentucky, Tommy is a self taught guitarist and self described "hippie kid" from Virginia and Jesse 'Med School No More" Kristen a self taught drummer who grew up on punk and ska is from Massachusetts.
They focus on working with each others strengths making sure only the best comes out. And it does! This trio gave a great live performance this past Thursday and was a crowd favorite. With witty lyrics, great composition and killer harmony their passion and energy grabs you and won't let go until they say it ends.
Check out tour dates along with two big shows (Philly and NYC) and look for "Live and Let Ghost" to hit stores nation wide in April.
So if you haven't heard of Jukebox the Ghost, you haven't been listening." - Amy Palomar
