FREE MP3: Juliette Commagere's "OVERCOME"

Maybe you don’t know her name, but chances are you’ve heard her voice.

Los Angeles’ Juliette Commagere has lent her siren of a voice to Maynard James Keenan’s Tool side project Puscifer, the latest self-titled record from road metal baddies Avenged Sevenfold, and, of course, her own band Hello Stranger, who’ve spent the past few months opening for the Foo Fighters across America. So, yeah, Commagere is a busy girl. But after the Fighters tour, she somehow found time to whip up a record of her own. Written in the beautiful reaches of Cali – Big Sur and the Mojave are pretty beautiful – the album features contributions from Joachim Cooder, Martin Pradler, and Jaochim’s dad, some guy you maybe have heard of named Ry Cooder, who played slide on “Nature of Things,” before leaving Commagere with the below quote:

“Juliette is a young modern person writing R&B ballads like Dan Penn. Nobody’s doing that anymore. And that’s 100% true — not 10% true like all that hype bullshit out there.”

Wild At Heart - Thursday October 30th 2008

Hey Kirk -
I am posting an extra Halloween blog - "BOO" - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Halloween is almost here and I thought I would get a few things out before the weekend.

Halloween did not become a holiday in the United States until the 19th century, where lingering Puritan tradition restricted the observance of many holidays. The holiday came here during the time of the great migration after the potato famine in Ireland where it originated, and is known in Irish as Oíche Shamhna. Pre-Christian Celts had an autumn festival, Samhain which celebrated the end of summer. The festival is an agricultural "fire festival" or feast when the dead revisited the mortal world. Large communal bonfires would hence be lit to ward off evil spirits. Pope Gregory IV standardized the date of All Saints' Day, or All Hallows' Day, on November 1 in the name of the entire Western Church in 837. Kids there traditionally dress in costumes of various underworldly creatures and enjoy lit bonfires and fireworks.

Of course, today in America, we mostly like to dress up and party. I am looking forward to going to the annual Halloween show by ICP which should be interesting. The Crofoot will be having a special Halloween program going on with the Von Bondies and Wolfman Mac. Upstairs in the Pike Room will be the Javelins, Prussia and Wildcatting all doing tributes to their favorite bands (the Strokes, Smiths and T Rex respectfully). The Pop Project will be at the Phototropic Lounge and there will be free candy (sounds like a bribe to me). Don’t forget to dress up.

It is also the start of the Roller Derby season on Nov 1st with a Halloween themes derby between the Detroit Pistoffs and the Devil’s Night Dames. Doors at 6PM and the match starts at 7PM. These are always fun events so get your lazy butts over there and cheer on the women. The featured charity is Alternatives For Girls which helps homeless and at risk girls avoid teen pregnancy, violence and exploitation so it is a worthy cause getting out there.

Crash Baby, who now runs the Derby girls, is currently helping the prop division on the current filming of the new Rob Schneider movie being filmed around Greektown. I was down there as an extra which was fun. We got to film some outdoor party scenes with Rob of which yours truly might actually have some face time when the movie (tentatively titled American Virgin) comes out next year. It is all in the placement. I even got a set nickname which was cool. One of the set guys started calling me Blue, which might have been the color of my skin after being outdoors without a jacket all day in the cold Detroit weather. Most everyone was really nice including Rob who took some time to talk to fans and sign autographs. I met a lot of cool people (or should I saw people who were cool) though the line for the catered food line reminded me of high school through less organized. It is amazing how idiotic people can get when they don’t get their way. Kudos to the female cop who came along and organized the line. You go girl!! I plan on going back down today after my show.

On my Monday show, I will be having a talk with singer Jessica Lea Mayfield who was in town last night at the Pike Room. Tune in between 8-10AM for that and I will be giving out tickets to see Brian Wilson in Ann Arbor on the 12th. Later everyone and have a safe holiday.

DUI of EODM

Got the new EODM in the mail Monday and its always a good gauge of a new album to listen in the car and see how it hits me...There aren't many records out that I would be so anxious for arrival but it is EOMD and the third time around is always a charm.....

Had a few in me at home and was feeling good so I decided to take the Challenger out for a drive and give it a listen....some of the best times are the "Solo Flights" out on the road and I hit the freeway by time "Live in LA" was blaring // before I knew it we were doing well over 100 as I rolled down toward the Davison...

DIETROIT always seems like a blur of broken boards and burned blackness when "I'm a Torpedo" barreling down the FWY and listening to a great record lending itself as rose colored glasses...you feel hopeful that the hardship that plagues the city will recede / smiling faces / kids playing in the street...

Figures, your out getting "Cheap Thrills " and thats when the flashing lights come up in the rear view and I'm thinking "Now I'm a fool" for doing this and I knew things were gonna get interesting from that point on....

Was wearing my heart on my sleeve as I pulled up into the pack and eased over squeezing between a rusty ol' caddy and a dirty white van but the citizen on patrol was still behind me so I punched it past the rig on the right and braked hard pulling back and off the exit with the rear barely keeping pace racing down the ramp. Thinking fast and moving fast are one in the same so I jumped back on the freeway and could see my pursuer just ahead of me probably on the radio making waves to the street to keep on the lookout...I just doubled back on the Lodge and was home free "Prissy Prancin'"

Eagles of Death Metal play November 11th at Small's

It's sold out but we are working to get a video interview and a ticket or two for giveaway

dont hold your breath - its tight just like the new record

no review here - only a fav track listing...Cheap Thrills // Solo Flights

If you want my copy of "Heart On" you can have it - ask me after the show and its yours.

FREE MP3: Third Eye Blind's "Non Dairy Creamer"

Third Eye Blind are about to release their first batch of new songs in five years via a digital EP, entitled Red Star, on November 18th, 2008.

The material, which includes three new tracks along with additional video content, will be followed by a full-length release, Ursa Major, in 2009.3EB have been inspired by the possibilities and potential that new media provide, and are discovering their own paradigm on how they create and reach people with music.

They have toured consistently over the past two years, and sold out every show, playing in front of crowds of up to 11,000 fans, in response to an entirely new fan-base who have discovered this music on the web. These new fans have proved that, despite a 5-year hiatus between albums, 3EB has in fact deepened its connection with its community.

ALL SAINTS LIKE TO PARTY with The Drinking Problem - Baker's Streetcar Hamtramck - Sat Nov 1st

"You all better come to this show!" - Dave from TDP

Saturday, November 1st 2008
All Saints Day Party in Hamtramck
w/ The Drinking Problem, Four Hour Friends and Copper Thieves
@
Bakers Streetcar
$5. 9pm doors, 10:30 music.

Baker's Streetcar is one of those Hamtramck bars that usually only hosts live music once a year for the Blowout. It's tiny, the band plays on the floor, and the walls are primed for sweat. We're looking forward to it.

The Drinking Problem is Eddie Baranek (The Sights), Dave Lawson (The Pop Project) and Jeremy Stork (Solitary States / 4 hour Friends). Korin Cox is in the band sometimes, but she's got a show in Madison that day with her "other band," the Hard Lessons.
www.myspace.com/thedrinkingproblem

The Four Hour Friends are Dale Wilson (ex-Expatriates), Steven Palmer (ex-Ghost City, Back in Spades, Fletcher Pratt), Jason Croff (Dead Bodies, Croff Family Band), Brandon White (Actionbasic), Jeremy Stork (Solitary States / Drinking Problem), and Jenna Cook (a monogamous anomaly in detroit music?).
http://www.myspace.com/thefourhourfriends

Copper Thieves are John Nelson (New Grenada), Christian Doble (Kiddo, Child Bite) and Andy Roy (ex-New Grenada).
http://www.myspace.com/copperthieves

"I drink at Bakers every single night because it's a great venue," belched Jeremy Stork, drummer in bands. "Now they've even booked a show. I love this place."

the iLike Video for "Get Yourself Home"

"Sick, tired, torn, and frayed, These United States let no dust settle under their soles this spring as they made the pilgrimage from DC to Lexington, KY just 9 weeks after the release of their debut album, sights set on a rock-and-roll reformation. The result is Crimes, TheseUS's sophomore album, recorded in six short days at Shangri-La Studios, and out to the world September 23.

One part Rolling Thunder Revue, one part banged-and-bruised balladeering, two parts just plain strange, Crimessees the band hitch an American folklore ride down diverging tracks from A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden's trembling psych-folk tendencies. Bandleader Jesse Elliott's casual croon careens more often towards a yearning yelp - desperate times, you know? - as his merry gang of Obviously Five Believers vamp all piss and vinegar, hoot and holler, multi-instrumental mischief and sly saloon smiles.

In place of Picture's lovelorn protagonists, Crimes supplants the classic characters of a world gone wicked: bad men in boots and boats, all-too-able Cains, wolves in fresh-shorn sheepskin, sold-out sirens of the seashore, knife-wielding big-talking drunk drinkers, Moriartys, don Quijotes, Samuel Clemenses, and all manner of disillusioned Appleseeds in between - with the occasional dogged optimist thrown in for good measure, of course; even the world itself can't be all bad all the time. As self-effacing as they are scathing, though, Crimes' critiques are ultimately an empathetic eye towards the sins, schemes, devils, and delusions that bind us all. Dreams, in other words.

Hot off pressing the '08 flesh from Paris to Portland and Glastonbury Fest to SXSW, These United States will of course continue their mad march to - well, any sea that will have them - in support of Crimes.

Lots of good things have come from the motorcity including 313.JAC

We heard through the grapevine that they need a little convincing over there to keep the music alive up top with a few support letters to the ownership....

take a few minutes and write a little email of support for the Static/Sterling supercrew who have been putting on great weekends of music for years now....

http://www.jacobysbar.com/contact.html and write a small letter of support for keeping the only "really" downtown venue that supports local music as they have and hopefully will continue to be doing for years to come.

WILD AT HEART - Monday October 27th 2008

Hey Kirk-here is this week's blog post - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

This past weekend was wonderful despite some occasional glimpses at bad weather. I actually saw a car with snow on it. I’m not sure where he was from, but I was glad I didn’t come from the same place. It is too early for me to be thinking about snowy weather. The opera Margaret Gardner was excellent and now I can look forward to the next production at the Detroit Opera House which is a group of dance numbers by the troop Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Some of the pieces will include an newly tweaked version of Alejandro Cerrudo's "Extremely Close," the world premiere of Toru Shimazaki's "Fold" and a updated revival of Israeli Ohad Naharin masterpiece "Minus 16”. This is one of the best contemporary dance ensembles in the country and shouldn’t be missed. I will hopefully get one of the ensemble on my show on WXOU 88.3FM (or online at www.wxou.org) this Thursday. I will however, have cast member Cole Porter (no relation to the “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” composer) who plays Brian in the upcoming Fisher Theatre production of Avenue Q (starts Nov 5th).

Musically, I was at a couple of cool shows but the best of the bunch was David Byrne who played a great set at the Michigan Theatre who was doing a tribute to the songs he did with Brian Eno. The set included some of my favorite Talking Heads songs such as “I Zimba”, “Burning Down The House”, “Heaven” and my personal favorite “Once In A Lifetime”. A number of the songs had him accompanied by dancers on stage which led to some fun moments like one song where they are whizzing between David and the microphone or where one of them leaps over David. This is probably my favorite show of the year so far and makes me strongly await the upcoming Brian Wilson show (also at the Michigan Theatre) on Nov 12th (I will be giving away tickets for the show next week on my radio program so tune in).

This week, my concert calendar looks at Janet Jackson & LL Cool J @ the Palace of Auburn Hills on the 28th (I finally get to see one of the crazy Jackson’s in person, I’m hoping for a wardrobe malfunction), Sara Bareills @ the Fillmore on the 30th and a Halloween show featuring ICP @ the Fillmore. Also, Nov 2nd @ the Magic Bag is Uh Huh Her (WXOU will be giving away tickets for this show also). If you go to the station in the basement of the Oakland Center, there are some free White Lion tickets on the promotions table for their appearance at the Emerald on the 28th. Other cool shows I can’t make it to are Jolie Holland @ The Crofoot (Oct 28th), Jessica Lee Mayfield @ the Pike Room (Oct 29th – trying to get her on my show), and WAR @ Arturo’s Jazz Theatre (Oct 31st-Nov 2nd).

Getting back to theatre, I saw a couple of fun plays for the holiday season. My first stop was at the Ringwald Theater for “Love And Human Remains” which is a comedy-drama that follows the lives of several sexually frustrated "thirty-something’s" who try to learn the meaning of love. This is somewhat dampened by the presence of a serial killer which might be known to some of the characters in the play. My favorite character is Joe Bailey as David, a homosexual waiter that is jaded on love but willing to make fun of his heterosexual roommate Candy and her experiment with lesbianism and his flirting with the barely of age busboy. We also have an otherworldly Benita who is a prostitute with psychic abilities and a good friend of David’s. We also have Bernie (David’s troubled best friend), Jerri (a lesbian who falls in love with Candy) and Kane (the busboy who seems to fall for David but denies being gay). This is a fun piece for the season and as Joe puts it, “we have some equal opportunity nudity in the show” which should appeal to the audience. The Ringwald is known for putting on some really unique productions and this is no different. Check out their website www.whowantscaketheatre.com for dates (runs until Nov 10th) and ticket prices.

For those who want a little more blood in their theatre, you can check out the Oakland University production of “A Nightmare On Elm Street”, the last installment of a trilogy which included productions of “Halloween” and “Friday The 13th”. The 1984 horror film is diluted down to an hour long piece which sees Freddy take out his revenge on a group of five teenagers, one of which might have the power to bring him into the real world. Being a dream character, this makes Freddy a little different than Michael or Jason to pull off in a convincing fashion but the cast does their best and you can feel a true love for the project. There are a few things I would have liked to see them do differently to make the production a little scarier, but this show is like seeing a good friend and can be enjoyed for what it is. I know the girl behind me was going crazy as she was trying to keep her eyes opened despite the fright. The show does have a few good fights that have you cheering for the kids but in the end, Freddy gets his due including the memorable bed scene. The first show was a sell out so make sure you get their early or call ahead. The show runs until Oct 31st at 10:30PM every day in the basement of Varner Hall with a midnight showing on Halloween. Nightmare trivia - According to Wes Craven, his decision to cast Johnny Depp (yes that Johnny Depp) was influenced by his daughter and a friend of hers who thought he was the "cutest" of the final three choices (I think they have a good eye and should be hired by Hollywood execs right away).

For a change of pace, you can also go to the Henry Ford Museum to see the newest exhibition “Out Of This World” which runs through Jan 11th. The exhibit pays homage to the costume designers of some of Hollywood’s best known movie heroes and villains. Included in this exhibit is Margaret Hamilton’s witches’ hat from “The Wizard Of Oz”. Indiana Jones “jacket and whip”, Dan Aykroyd’s Ghostbusters II uniform, Clooney’s “nipple” batsuit and various costumes from Enemy Mine, Terminator, T2, Blade Runner, Highlander and Tron. This also includes one of the movie Batmobiles and the car from Ghostbusters. For Star Trek fans, you can see Kirk’s uniform from the “Mirror Mirror” episode, Seven of Nine’s jumpsuit and a Gorn costume among other things. On the Star wars side, we have Darth Vader’s costume, Skywalker’s severed hand and lightsabre and Obi-Wan’s cloak. My favorite piece is a Viper Suit from the new Battlestar Galactica series. If you look at the left leg, you can see a flight check off list sewn into the leg. Being a huge fan of sci-fi fantasy, I must admit to being a little geeked to see some of these items and I’m sure most movie fans will enjoy it to. The exhibit is free with admission and you can go to www.thehenryford.org for more information. The last room is great for kids where they can get a free picture of themselves in Gotham or Oz (that’s one X-mas present for the parents down), watch old movie trailers or make their own comic strips and costumes. So grab a kid (hopefully your own) or inner child and get down to the Henry Ford. Also, if you haven’t been their recently, make sure you stop by the newly revamped “With Liberty And Justice For All” to see Lincoln’s chair and the Rosa Parks bus and “Heroes of the Sky” to see Byrd’s 1926 Fokker Trimotor among other amazing airplanes.

Now, there are also a couple of movies you can see. I personally recommend the new Bill Maher documentary “Religulous”, the title derived from blending the words "religion" and "ridiculous". Bill says he doesn’t believe in “God” but is open to anyone who can show him proof which of course when dealing with something faith based is hard to do. Bill seems to want to mock the kooks and give credence to those who can at least seem intelligent. He does a little traveling which I give him credit for going to such places as Jerusalem, the Vatican and Salt Lake City, and does interviews with numerous believers from a variety of backgrounds and groups, including Jews for Jesus, Christians, Muslims, former Mormons, Satanists, Hasidic Jews and a guy who believes Marijuana brings one closer to God. My favorite interview is with Father Reginald Foster (a Catholic priest, senior Vatican scholar and one of the great living experts in Latin literature) who gives Bill a no nonsense look at modern Catholicism (even telling Bill some of what he went through as a kid no longer applies – priceless). While sometimes he goes to far with his subjects, he does give enough information to start a dialogue about religion and what it means to us. The downside is that this film might only appeal to Maher fans (of which I am one) but even if you are a believer, this is one of the funniest movies of the year. It is also nice seeing Bill’s mom in the film and she adds a touch of class to it. It’s also funny hearing a Muslim tell Bill he is not very funny! Grade: A.

There is also the new comedy “Sex Drive” is a about a high school senior who goes on a cross-country road trip (what is with all the road trip movies nowadays) to hook up with a girl he met online. Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is an 18-year-old recent high school graduate who has trouble meeting girls and has some sexy talk with "Ms. Tasty" (Katrina Bowden) and agrees to meet her in person. The catch is that she lives in Knoxville and he doesn’t have a car. His best friend Lance (Clark Duke) convinces him to steal his brothers’ car without permission to go to her. One snag has his best friend Felicia (sexy Amanda Crew), tags along on this ill-fated trip. The movie is basic and has some laughs and seeing Seth Green as an Amish mechanic is quite fun, though like most movie post-Fast Times or Porky’s, it finds itself hard to sustain the big laughs or the cult status for longevity. Still, it isn’t a bad diversion though don’t expect much. Grade: C+.

Well, I think that is all for this blog. Have a good week everyone and I’ll see you next week.

Feel free to check out page at myspace.com/wildatheart_13 for any updates. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, this Wednesday I’ll be an extra in the new Rob Schneider film "Virgin on Bourbon Street" (might not be real title since not in imdb) which is filming over the next month down by Greektown. If you would like to be an extra in the film, please contact Nicolas at iwannabeinamovie@gmail.com. They are looking for college kids to be in some party scenes and parades. Look out Hollywood, here comes Wild Bill!!

“Elaine Stritch - At Liberty” in Jazz Café
3 Performances- October31-November 2nd
To Benefit Music Hall Center For The Performing Art’s Jazz Café

Jazz Café at Music Hall, is the perfect setting for this Tony Award-winning one-gal show where you can enjoy, up close and personal and in a timeless atmosphere, an entertainment legend covering a career in which she was a bonafide, “Triple Threat” (Actor, Singer & Dancer) and a one-of-a-kind personality. The D.A. Pennebaker documentary of Elaine Stritch at Liberty (2004) combined rehearsal elements and her stage performance, and also won several Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Achievement in a Variety or Music Program.

WINTERSLEEP
Magic Stick Detroit
Wed November 5th
7PM
$10/$12 all ages show

On the heels of an incredible run of U.S. dates with Wolf Parade, Halifax’s - Wintersleep is traversing the country yet again. This time, they’re out with Portugal The Man and Earl Greyhound.

The tour hits Magic Stick in Detroit on November 5th and 39 other cities across the country in October and November. Show time is 8:00pm with tickets priced at $12.00 in advance and $14.00 day-of-show.

Critically acclaimed Halifax band Wintersleep has enjoyed a pretty amazing year thus far.

The band just wrapped up a run of U.S. dates with Wolf Parade and will release its third album Welcome to the Night Sky in the US on November 11th. Wintersleep kicked off 2008 by winning the Juno Award for Best New Artist and a MuchMusic Video Award for “Weighty Ghost”. Following the release of its 2005 self-titled sophomore album, Wintersleep spent months on the road touring through Canada, America and Europe. Upon return to their native Halifax, the band called upon veteran producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals), and retreated to the studio for April and May of 2007.

Welcome to the Night Sky reaches radical new territory for the band, and many critics have already hailed its ‘album of the year’ potential.

FREE MP3: The Royalties "Music for Cooking with Gas"

Check out The Royalties' "Music for Cooking with Gas"

"The Royalties started as a joke. Or, more accurately, a series of jokes between friends – an ill-fated punk band, a cheesy covers group, and a handful of failed/funny projects that never really took off, but served as fine launching pads for vocalist/bassist Tommy Haltbakk and drummer BK Rambjør. Today, however, The Royalties are no punchline. Finally crystallizing in late 2005, the duo of Haltbakk and Rambjør released their debut-album to a cavalcade of critical praise, and even landed a Norwegian Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album in 2007. No laugh-track for those kind of accolades. Earlier this year, the band followed up their initial success with their rousing sophomore offering, The Lost Royalties, produced by Haltbakk, and bearing the new contributions of Mari Persen. Here’s the part where we’d lay out all the stellar press quotes about the album, but, you know, they’re all in Norwegian. "

"Almost Lost Detroit" supports Detroit Public Schools with 50% of proceed donation! WOW!

Detroit artist Marquise Porter gives back to the Detroit Public Schools through single "We Almost Lost Detroit" with 50% of all digital sales going to the troubled school system.

"We Almost Lost Detroit" the hit single from one of Detroit's well versed and seasoned artists Marquise Porter's critically acclaimed album entitled "Soldier To A Boss", has yet brought another outlook to the hook claiming that Detroit is not yet lost. Although Detroit has faced an abrasive reality on poverty stricken neighborhoods, degradation of buildings and streets in it's city as well as the declination of employment, the spirit of the people manage to keep hope alive through the belief of CHANGE from all aspects in the coming years.

Marquise Porter teamed up with Frankie Glass the C.E.O. of MOBB NORTH RECORDS ( which is established on the East side of Detroit) and Detroit's School Districts (the Fund 52 Detroit schools donation department) to further the belief that our children are the future and education is the key to improving the young lives that are steadily growing everyday.

In saying that, Marquise Porter and Mobb North Records will be giving 50% of all sales of the digital single (which is on Itunes, Amazon.com, Napster & Rhapsody) & Record Stores to charitable causes for the Detroit's school system. Also success has risen out of the album(released July 2008) which maintains constant (research; Nielsen Soundscan) selling power in Michigan.

"We Almost Lost Detroit" the video, which has become a phenomenon on Youtube with over a quarter million hits in several months, depicts the city of the lost artists from Detroit and displays the reality of a very tenacious city that will survive the tragedy that affects it today.

Marquise Porter's music has been featured on Radio One, XM satellite radio, Clear Channel stations across the country as well as a host of internet radio stations, making the title of the album "Soldier To A Boss" a true depiction of Marquise Porter's character and success.

The single comes out on election day November 4th

Mobb North Records is a striving record out of Detroit, which recently signed one of hip hop legend MC BREED plus last year Marquise Porter also won video of the year for "Alone" at the http://www.detroithiphop.com/ Awards

Kemodo Records CMJ Jam - Friday October 24th - NY

This post is for our NYC readers -
I was supposed to be at this show and I can only blame the wife - my children - my family - my friends - and my job for not being there to check out some of the best music out there right now - I am not talking about CMJ

I AM TALKING ABOUT THIS SHOW! TKW&TV ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING TO COME OUT OF BROOKLYN SINCE MY GOOD FRIEND FRANKIEg

LINEUP:
Dungen
The Muslims
Marissa Nadler
Tk Webb & The Visions

Kemado Records Presents:
CMJ After Party with Superjails’ Cheeseburger
It's BURGERTIME.

On Friday, October 24th following their official CMJ showcase, Kemado Records will be throwing an awesome FREE late night After Party at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. Kicking off at midnight, the event includes live performances by Children and Cheeseburger AND free gourmet burgers courtesy of Le Gamin!

The event is inspired by Adult Swim’s new original animated series, Superjail!, co-created by Christy Karacas, guitarist of Cheeseburger and produced by Augenblick Studios. The series’ theme song, “Comin’ Home” was also written and performed by Cheeseburger. Don't be surprised if the band gets the chair and the inmates riot-this will be another of those nights where the infamous Cheeseburger raises the bar - bring a slicker, an umbrella and a change of drawers...this will be one to remember.

After all the musical mayhem happening this special night, there's one thing that's going to be on everyone's minds at the midnight hour: hunger! Not to fear, the brand new Le Gamin Food Truck will be giving out FREE (with showcase ticket purchase/CMJ badge) gourmet cheeseburgers from 12:00 am-3:00 am. There will also be tote bag giveaways and a very special video premiere between the two bands’ sets.

The psychedelic landscape of Superjail! features dangerous criminals, fantastic creatures and frequent riots. The series uses flash animation to create traditional animation gags that move at a dizzying pace. Series creators and executive producers Christy Karacas (Cartoon Sushi) and Stephen Warbick (Beavis and Butthead, Celebrity Deathmatch, Daria, Ice Age 2, Horton Hears a Who) first began working together as animators at MTV Animation. Superjail! airs Sunday nights at 11:45 PM EST on Adult Swim.

3rd Annual Thriller Chiller Festival - GRAND RAPIDS - Sat Oct 25th 2008

MICHIGAN MADE HORROR FILM THE TOWER AT THRILLER! CHILLER!

SATURDAY OCTOBER 25, 2008
$5 - 8:30PM

Before big budget Hollywood films were wooed by Michigan’s aggressive film incentives, a small band of dedicated filmmakers toiled in an abandoned building on Detroit’s Cass Corridor to create The Tower.

Now 4 years after filming began, the Tower will be shown at Michigan’s premiere horror film festival, Thriller! Chiller! in Grand Rapids.

The Tower thrusts an audience into a striking atmosphere, full of filth, industrial wreckage and gore. Through astonishing visuals a terrifying story of murder, obsession, and sacrifice is told -- all set in an abandoned Art Deco skyscraper.

Directors Dan Falzone and Dan McGowan together with a crew of close friends created the fledging Michigan film company Grand Circus Productions. The Tower is their first feature.

The movie was filmed under harsh conditions in one of the fabulous ruins of Detroit. With no running water, or electrical, the production had to overcome issues with heat, cold, rain, snow, theft, and vandalism, but the painstaking result is evident on the screen.

“Now for the first time horror fans from the Western Michigan will be able to see our film. We are honored to have our film in Thriller Chiller. We are proud to support other Michigan filmmakers. Together we will help forge a new industry here in Michigan,” said Dan McGowan, director/producer of the Tower.

Plot Summary: A long abandoned tower rots above a city in turmoil. Stripped of all electrical wiring and inhabitants, the structure is lifeless. Yet in the darkness of night, an ominous glow illuminates the tower's penthouse. Doug, driven by a burning obsession to discover the cause of the glow mysteriously vanishes. Lucy is utterly alone without her brother. An investigation into his whereabouts leads her to his apartment. There she discovers Doug's obsession with the building's violent history. That night, Lucy experiences a waking dream that convinces her Doug is trapped inside. In order to save her brother, Lucy embarks on a journey into the tower. Inside she confronts the darkest regions of her consciousness to discover the mystery of the tower and all those whom it has consumed.”

The Tower is playing at 8:30 pm at the Koning Microcinema in Grand Rapids, MI as part of the 3rd annual Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival, weekend passes are $20, individual tickets are $5. For more information on Thriller! Chiller!

Monday, October 20
Paleo w/Justin Case
10pm
FREE
Paleo is a one man songwriting MACHINE. I don't say this lightly; this fellow is under 30 but has already penned more than 400 songs-- 365 of which were in a single year. Paleo received a great deal of press for his 2006 Songwriting Tour in which he played a different city nearly everyday and spent his late, late nights and early mornings composing melodies and lyrics in his car, closets, living rooms and barrooms across the US. Justin Case is a Detroit singer-songwriter making his return to the stages of the Motor City after a stint on the west side of the state for college.

Tuesday, October 21
John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars w/The Mantons and Brighton, MA
10pm
FREE
John Sinclair scarcely needs an introduction. Yes, this is the former MC5 manager and Grande Ballroom fixture, marijuana activist, White Panther Party leader and the man who got John Lennon to sing out on his behalf in Ann Arbor after his 1969 arrest for possession of two joints. Come check out Sinclair's latest musical project for FREE on this excellent Tuesday night. The Mantons are a blues folk rock experimental three-piece from Hazel Park. Brighton, MA is a band from Chicago, IL, which could at first glance seem confusing. Taken from front-man Matthew Kerstein's birth place, the name evokes an idea of a home, perhaps one that you can never go back to, even as the four band members build their own home within the name. This is a fundamental element in Kerstein's layered lyrics steeped in a history that remembers the past, only in as much as it informs the present. Following their debut EP in 2007, Amateur Lovers marks their first full-length record and a step forward in the evolution of the band.

Wednesday, October 22
Mixo Presents "Beatz 2 Rhymez" Hiphop Battle
10pm
FREE

Mixo of Rhyme Asylum is what the world of hiphop is missing. This live and entertaining individual is ready and able to usher in a new era of hiphop music. Mixo was born and raised in Detroit and has come up through the local trenches of underground hiphop. He has competed in countless freestyle competitions and remains undefeated to this day by looking back to the time when lyrics, not the hook, were the key to a hit song. Mixo will be hosting "Beats 2 Rhymez" the last Wednesday of every month at PJ's Lager House. $50 to the winner!

Thursday, October 23
The Sugarcoats w/The Howling Diablos, Gary Quackenbush
10pm
FREE

The Sugarcoats are a kickass side project of Corey Weedon and Todd McNulty from Lee Marvin Computer Arm. They've got that Woodbridge sound... it's a true commonwealth 'round them parts! The Howling Diablos rocking, funky, blues jam style is well known as a great live music experience all around our fine city. Since their formation in the 90s, they have toured with and opened for acts including George Clinton, Alice Cooper, Hank Williams Jr., and many others. The Diablos have appeared on Fat Possum releases by Nathaniel Mayer and RL Burnside; their latest release is the critically acclaimed Car Wash on Alive Records. Gary "GQ" Quackenbush rounds out the lineup with his usual Thursday night rocking good time. Quackenbush is a founding member of the venerable SRC and will be playing the SRC hits and other classics live onstage. Many of the songs are featured on his first solo album, GQ In A Shade of Blue, out on SRC Records. Don't miss this chance for an intimate brush with Detroit rock history!

Friday, October 24
The Fondas w/The Pizzaz, The Dial Tones
10pm
$5

The Fondas features the soulful vocalist stylings of Julie Benjamin in front of garage pop power riffs. Their debut album "Coming Now!" was released on the well-regarded Sympathy For The Record Industry. The Fondas feed off a musical legacy that runs from New Orleans, snakes through Memphis and ends up in our own hot-wired and rebuilt Motor City. Allen Park's The Pizazz [sic] are young, crazy and write good, catchy, upbeat pop songs. This group won't bore you with what you've heard before; it's a fresh approach to indie/new wavey rock sound. The Dial Tones are " a fine group of young musicians," according to the venerable Black Hollies and "cartoon garage rock" according to the oft-writer, less-quoted Dirtbombs drummer Ben Blackwell. This group knows how to work it, and work it they do. The Dial Tones will have their vinyl debut, The Hot Dogs! EP, in tow.

Saturday, October 25
Cut In The Hill Gang w/The Muldoons, Danny Kroha, Dooley Wilson
10pm
$5

The Soledad Brothers' Johnny Walker is back with a vengeance with his new band from Covington, Kentucky, Cut In The Hill Gang. Lead guitarist Brad Meinerding will impress with his slide skills and Johnny wow with what Johnny does best. The Muldoons are everyone's favorite rock'n'roll kids with dad, Brian, on drums. They're better every damn time you see them so make it out to this show where they are sure to be in top form! Danny Kroha (The Readies, formerly of Demolition Dollrods and The Gories) will be playing solo blues. It's Danny like you've never seen him before. Sweet old guitars, slides and a homemade instrument make for an awesome Kroha show. And finally-- you saw him on October 11th with John Roundcity and said, "Damn, play another one!" No time then, but Toledo's own Dooley Wilson (Boogaloosa Prayer, formerly of The Young Lords and Henry & June) is back on the 25th. Wilson is quite possibly the best blues slide guitarist north of the Mason-Dixon line. Obscure 1930s and 40s blues songs combine with originals for one of the coolest set lists around. There's no douchey hair-tossing or tongue wagging going on this night (like you might get with a lot of white boy blues bands), just some truly quality music.

WILD AT HEART - Monday October 20th 2008

Hey Kirk-Back from out of town
here is this week's blog post - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Hi everyone!! I’m back in town from my vacation and looking forward to some upcoming shows, but first, let’s talk about my trip. I am from upstate New York in a little town called Spencerport. In a nutshell, the town was founded in 1804 when Daniel Spencer bought a farm about 1½ miles north of Ogden Center. When the Erie Canal opened, the farm was sold to become the first village lots. As a port on the canal, the area was called Spencer's Basin and later changed to Spencerport. That is about it though it has one of the best used bookstores I have ever been to (this is where my addiction to comic books and sci-fi came from). Besides me, other notable people from Spencerport include Alan Zemaitis (Penn St and later Tampa Bay NFL cornerback), MAD magazine writer Andrew Jost, musician John Viavattine, skier AJ Kitt and serial killer Arthur John Shawcross (aka The Genesee River Killer) who is of no relation. That is all there really is to say about my home town which I loved growing up in. I can mention that it is about a 15 minute drive to downtown Rochester and that by living in Pontiac, I am still about a 15 minute drive to a downtown Rochester.

It is always great visiting the parents because 1) I love them, 2) they buy me clothes (I always like shopping with someone who can get me motivated to buy and convince not to buy certain things) and 3) my mom is a great cook. I also like the area because 1) it has 4 really great record stores (my college buddy Rob manages the wonderful Bop Shop and I am starting to play his KISS influenced band “The Veins” on my radio show – Mon & Thurs 8-10AM on http://www.wxou.org/ ), 2) some really great used bookstores and novelty shops and 3) The Rochester Amerks, my favorite hockey team though they were recently bought by Florida and are no longer part of the Buffalo Sabres farm team. I also got to go to one of my parents old dating haunts. It started off as a place for kids of German decent to hang out and you actually had to have a key to get in. Nowadays, it is a sports bar and concert venue and I was lucky enough to catch Nick Lowe in concert who played a wonderful set of old hits including a Rockpile song and a few new cuts off his new album, At My Age. Greg Townsend, lead singer of the Rochester based Hi-Risers, opened the show in spectacular fashion which a bunch of catchy and funny pop tunes.

I also took the opportunity to check out the refurbished George Eastman museum. The house has been there for awhile and for those not familiar, he founded the Eastman Kodak Company (where my dad retired from) and invented roll film, which helped bring photography to the mainstream. He also helped found the Eastman School of Music and establish MIT. The museum has a couple of nice exhibits if you get out that way in the near future. The exhibits include the mixed media work of John Wood, the railroad photography of O Wilson Link and a wonderful collection of historic and unique cameras. Go to www.eastmanhouse.org for more information.

Lastly, we took a nice tour of the fall foliage of the Naples area and picked up some grape pies (a local delicacy which brings people from as far as Buffalo to pick them up) and took in the Balloon Manor (a haunted house which is up this week at Greece Town Mall that is made up entirely by balloons). You can go to www.balloonmanor.com for more information and see some of the neat images. Larry Moss is from the Rochester area and also holds the Guinness World Record for the largest non-round balloon sculpture and the creation of the “Fantastic Flying Octopus” a large balloon sculpture piloted by John Ninomiya.

Getting across the border was a mixed bag this trip. I had half hour delays crossing on the way home at both Windsor and NY, though I crossed in 5 minutes at NY on the way back. I stopped to eat lunch at a park next to the Canada Marine Discovery Centre which I also walked through. This is a nice place for kids where they can pilot a ship near Niagara Falls, learn about conservation and various historical facts about the area. The have a small art gallery, some live fish from the lakes and a few historical artifacts of interest. You can also walk around the dock outside and during good weather, you can tour the warship HMCS Haida, a Canadian destroyer which saw service from 1943-63. After a beautiful day, I ended it up getting stuck at the border for one hour and 45 minutes which made me late for the Mates Of State show at the Magic Stick. It was a good show but I was a little upset at missing the opening band, the Javelins. Oh well, things happen!

This week has a number of good shows. The tail end of the week will have me at the Flobots/Matisyahu @ the Fillmore on the 23rd, David Byrne on the 24th @ Michigan Theatre and Metro Station on the 25th @ Clutch Cargos. After the Byrne show, I would have seen every member of the Talking Heads perform so if they could just bury the hatchet and reunite, I would be very happy.

I am also looking forward to seeing the opera ‘Margaret Garner’ which still has shows on Wed, Fri and Sat. The opera is loosely based on the life of runaway slave Margaret Garner originally premièred on May 7, 2005 in Detroit. Margaret Garner was an enslaved African American woman in pre-Civil War America who was notorious - or celebrated - for killing her own daughter rather than to see the child returned to slavery. Actor Jeff MacMullen, who plays one of the judges, admits the opera takes some liberties on her story, but this makes it even more poignant to today’s audiences. This opera really takes a hard look at what it means to be a slave and the actions of what people would do to free themselves from those bonds. I will be seeing this on Wed and will put a review on www.myspace.com/wildatheart_13 after I see the opera. Her story was also popularized by Toni Morrison’s novel “Beloved” (and the following movie starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover).

For next week, look for info about Avenue Q (coming soon to the Fisher Theatre), the Henry Ford exhibit “Out Of This World” and a theatrical version of “A Nightmare On Elm Street”.

"Frank Zappa's musical imprint continues to resonate nearly 15 years after his death, a fact that bears testimony to his ability to find a synthesis among rock, jazz, fusions and absurdist humor. It seems appropriate, then, that Zappa's son, Dweezil, should keep his father's legacy alive by gathering some of Frank's former colleagues to pay tribute to his sprawling musical reach and form the band known as Zappa Plays Zappa. Their concerts present a collection of Frank Zappa's rock-oriented compositions from 1960s to 1980s. Apart from Dweezil Zappa on lead guitar, the band consists of a mix of relatively unknown young musicians and the older musicians who previously played with Frank Zappa himself. "

Marsalis Brasilianos - Music Hall Detroit - Thur Oct 23rd

Marsalis Brasilianos
Thursday, October 23rd 2008 - 8 pm

Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis, along with members of the Philharmonia Brasileira, as they coalesce to form the unique and exhilarating music of Marsalis Brasilianos.Marsalis Brasilianos, brings together Branford Marsalis, one of the giants of the jazz world, with a remarkable 35 piece Brazilian orchestra - The Philharmonia Brasileira (Gil Jardim, conductor) on the main stage at Music Hall, Thursday, October 23rd @ 8PM.

Together they celebrate the rich and sensual music of Heitor Villa-Lobos .
Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) combined Brazilian folk music with the European classical tradition to create soothing yet powerful melodies. Marsalis Brasilianos gives Branford Marsalis a chance to demonstrate his talent, as he uses his “mastery of both jazz and classical music [to allow] the language of Villa-Lobos’ compositions to truly shine. Branford Marsalis, the New Orleans-born jazz artist and this Brazilian ensemble find a point of departure in the work of Villa-Lobos, whose music draws on Afro-Brazilian folk influences (the roots of 1950s bossa nova—the now-classic meeting of jazz and Brazilian music) as well as an admiration for classical composers such as Stravinsky, Bach, and Milhaud.

This is an amazing musical hybrid that should not be missed. The perfect acoustics of Music Hall will provide the ambience for a potentially, magical evening of up-tempo rhythms and steamy hot jazz – flavored to the classical tradition, yet swings with an unbridled Brazilian passion.Learn more about Heitor Villa-Lobos

Tickets are available at Music Hall Box Office and www.Ticketmaster.com

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jazz scion and three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis was born in New Orleans into one of the city’s most famous musical families, which includes patriarch and pianist Ellis and siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. Known for his challenging and diverse takes on a myriad of styles and genres, Marsalis has become known as a soloist with such acclaimed ensembles as the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, Düsseldorf and the Boston Pops. His twenty-plus recordings, of various styles have received critical and audience acclaim, with his most recent CD, the Grammy-nominated Braggtown, arguably his quartet’s best received release ever.

Not only has Marsalis spent two years touring and recording with Sting and serving as musical director of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Marsalis has also collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby as well. Stretching out as an actor, he’s appeared in films including, Throw Mama from the Train and School Daze, performed and composed music for Mo’ Better Blues and other films, and hosted National Public Radio’s syndicated program Jazz Set. The Philarmonia Brasileira was founded in 1994 by conductor Gil Jardim, whose work is not only distinguished by its technique, but also his strong understanding of the fusion between ethnic and classical Brazilian musical elements.

In October 2005, Jardim released a CD with Philarmonia Brasileira recalling the first concert Villa-Lobos held in Paris, in 1924. Two of the tracks on the CD, the recordings of Pensées d’enfant and Epigramas ironicos e sentimentais, were being released for the first time. The CD, titled Villa-Lobos in Paris, was awarded the Diapason d’Or from the well-known magazine Diapason. In addition, Jardim has appeared with the Brooklyn Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, and the Camerata Mexicana in Mexico.

Tony Roko

Harmonizing urban grittiness with elegant sensuality and pop culture flair, Roko's work is soulful and suggestive, chic and risque. The use of industrial materials along with automotive finishes jolts electric life into bold, vivid colors, causing pieces to look as if, "they were coated in a hard candy shell."

Alloy Orchestra provide background scores for silent films at Detroit Film Theatre - THIS WEEKEND!

"Boston's world renowned Alloy Orchestra - which critic Roger Ebert has called "the best in the world at accompanying silent films" - will pay a return visit to the Detroit Film Theatre with one of the most exciting weekends of classics they've ever presented here. "

Friday, October 24, 2008 at 7:30 PM
THE LAST COMMAND(USA/1928)
Directed by Josef von Sternberg Josef von Sternberg's brilliant, rarely-seen 1928 drama The Last Command, about a former Imperial Russian General whose life takes several astounding turns, eventually culminating in his being cast in a Hollywood movie in which he plays - what else? - a Russian general. The great Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh) won the Academy Award for this performance, which once again springs to life thanks both to a sparkling 35mm restoration and the Alloy's vibrant new score.

Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 7:30 PM

UNDERWORLD(USA/1927)
Directed by Josef von Sternberg Widely cited as the very first true gangster film, Underworld was von Sternberg's first professional film, launching in stylish fashion one of the great directorial careers in all cinema. The Alloy Orchestra brings a special snap and energy to this gritty, hard-boiled tale of mob ruthlessness.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 4:00 PM
CHANG: A DRAMA OF THE WILDERNESS(USA/1927)
Directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack Years before they dreamed up that oversized ape that would climb the Empire State Building, King Kong's creators filmed this magical story of a Thai family's struggle with the wild animals around them: bears, tigers and changs! The climactic, eye-popping wild elephant stampede is still one of the most spectacular scenes in cinema history - made more thrilling by the Alloy Orchestra's pulse-pounding live score.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 6:00 PM
NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR
(Germany/1922) Directed by F.W. Murnau For the upcoming Halloween holiday, the Alloy will perform live with German director F.W. Murnau's silent vampire classic, Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror. Murnau's eerie and visually striking adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula is considered by many to be the greatest vampire movie of all time. Packed with images which still have the power to disorient and alarm, Nosferatu once again becomes a true symphony of horror when experienced with the Alloy Orchestra's ominous score.

MCB-VIDEO: Mick Bassett & the Marthas - Show tonight @ PJ's Lager House

Video of Mick Bassett & the Marthas from last weeks show at Northern Lights Lounge - they play tonight at LAGER HOUSE - get on over there...

Saturday, October 18
Scarlet Oaks w/Mick Bassett & the Marthas, Woodman
10pm

PJ's Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Corktown - Detroit
313.961.4668

Scarlet Oaks arrives in tow with their 2008 debut EP, "Innocence Isn't Easy."
On it, five well-crafted songs that cover the genres of folk, soul, garage, indie and classic country are unveiled. Lush three-part harmonies over raw vocals and simple yet melodic instrumentation, Scarlet Oaks wants to make you dance, cry and throw back a few in a Detroit parking lot. The more astute among you may recognize lead singer Steve McCauley from his previous group, Fifth Period Fever.

Mick Bassett & the Marthas is an all-encompassing musical adventure featuring the only two-trombone attack in Detroit. Bassett makes music in the curly-haired singer-songwriter vein. "Bob Dylan" whispers swirl around this young man but the horns add another element altogether making for one of the most energetic and unique shows around the motor city. Woodman is a family band that rocks the acoustic like Kim Deal and are some of the most amiable folks around the Detroit music haunts!

Frank Woodman, songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitar, 19 year old son Derek Woodman on tremolo soaked lead guitar and 17 year old daughter Hillary Woodman with haunting vocals, are Woodman. Registered Nurse and aspiring songwriter Frank, unable to get a band together due to afternoon shift restrictions, recruited his young ones to flesh out his plaintive songs. The experiment worked, with the Woodman voices melding together for some sweet Americana. Songs about childhood joys, lost innocence and stolen car rides, show their love for the American folk song.

Threefer @ MONA (Museum of NEW Art - Pontiac) - Sat Oct 18th

October 18 - November 22
Reception: October 18 th 2008
Saturday, from 6pm to 9pm

Celebrating 3 openings:

1). annabel elgar:
part 1

London artist Annabel Elgar's photography has featured in numerous international exhibitions throughout Europe and North America. The work is concerned with sharp awakenings to the loss of innocence. Characters inhabit a fraught psychological space that acknowledges the contradictions of the ensuing spectacle. Narratives slowly reveal themselves as unforeseen antidotes to the assumed drama that is being witnessed: photographs where the prerogative is concerned with the exposure of vulnerability in its various forms.

http://www.annabelelgar.com/

2). EARLY IN THE 21st CENTURY:
A Group Show of New Michigan Photography

with
Bettina Edwards
Cynthia Greig
Kelly Rosebrock
Tom Stoye
William Sadovsky
Jack Summers

The end of the 20th century was accelerated by broad advancements into the science and the art of intrusion. Now, the 21st century allows each and every one of us to carry the information age in our pockets and purses. We can talk, text, email, view the world on the net, and record and send out our “life” images from anywhere we happen to be. At the same moment, there is a camera watching us at every street corner. This isn't big brother, so much as Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes defining us all as self-proclaimed celebrities in our own right. We neither object nor hide from our increased visibility. We celebrate and embrace it, and buy into every new advance and gadget. All of this with the belief that by expanding the surveillance and instant interactions of our daily lives, we have each become integral to the entire global matrix of existence and meaning.

Early in the 21st Century, in places just out of sight from those fixed street cameras, Tom Stoye documents the nocturnal sub-culture of our new century, Bettina Edwards rushes in unannounced to record places we don't normally go, William Sadovsky with a slow shutter catches the quick "movement" of this new life and century, Cynthia Greig presents it all back to us in deceivingly simple black-and-white images of the everyday – a sort of skeletal quotidian, Kelly Rosebrock creates boxes that haunt and draw us toward their light, and Jack Summers mixes the two centuries into a satirical bag of tricks that drains the magic from both.

3). corine vermeulen-smith's DIORAMAS

Corine Vermeulen-Smith is a Dutch photographer who has been living in Detroit, Michigan for the last two and a half years. While most people associate Detroit with the Motor City and cars, Corine has mainly focused her lens on a very different side of town; urban prairies, farms, grass roots and green revolutions.
"Life in Detroit usually feels strangely futuristic; not only is it post-industrial, it is also post-urban. With so much vacancy and abandonment it is a likely place for imagining and dreaming up alternate scenarios."DIORAMAS is a body of Corine’s early large-scale work.
