FREEEP! - Not the free press yo but a FREE EP download from MPPA

Since its thanksgiving and all here is an the new MPPA EP for free - enjoy

We had a hard copy ready to roll but sometimes you just have to TAKE - so sorry you are all losers of that contest....we will make it up to you next week

Mister P. and his party have taken themselves captive to become the their own producers, manufacturers, and distributors. It was a deferential revolt against inertia, a clearing of the throat to answer the quiet. Or maybe it was an inevitable reaction to seeing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. In adherence to their demands, these songs were recorded in a cabin in Bearsville, NY, as a simple sonic manifestation of their opinions concerning the arguable value of a waterlogged paperback.

A Free EP prospectively titled:

The Dawn before the Dark Leaves or Water off a Black Dog's Back or Amazing Life or Butterfly Mornings and Wildflower Afternoons or May we never go go mental, may we always stay stay gentle or The Fear of not Being Afraid or The Warmth Within the Warren or Dreaming of Sleeping or Saying It to Keep It From Happening or This is not the Dark Leaves or Living for Liv Ullman or The Odds of a Sunrise or Whispering Pines or You'll be the Rhythm and I'll be the Beat and I'll be the Rhythm and You'll be the Beat or The Grass Harp or Goodbye Barcelona or Why is my copy of the Moviegoer Floating in a Puddle Beside the Car.

©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

©POPpor2nity
©POP Gallery’s 2nd All-Media Exhibit for New and Exciting Artists!
©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

©POP is extremely proud to announce the opening of ©POPpor2nity 2008, with an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, December 13, from 7PM - 10PM, featuring over 60 new artists from the world over.

©POPpor2nity – The second call for entries for the ground-breaking, all-media exhibition for all artists who have never shown at ©POP before. For a nominal submission fee, every ©POPpor2nity artist will be featured in arguably Detroit’s most popular and influential and gallery, ©POP, with an opening reception for the artists of ©POPpor2nity on Saturday, December 13 from 6 PM until 10 PM. Cpop is expecting to fill both it’s floors with new artists’ work in all mediums.

Like the first ©POPpor2nity in March of 2007, submissions were culled primarily over the internet through social networks like, MySpace, Craigslist and DeviantArt.com, and once again ©POP has received nearly a hundred submissions from everywhere in the US as well as Turkey, Greece and Canada to name but three of the many countries where ©Pop is well known.

The participants will be juried by a panel of 10 locally and internationally renowned artists, media folk, and celebrities, with the winners to be featured in their own 4-person showcase of champions exhibition at a later date at the storied Detroit gallery.
A few of the judges are : Artist/Chantuese Niagara, Murdercap Records impresario, Jerome Almon, DEMF Founder and global events producer, Carol Marvin, Musician/art collector, Ken Stanley & Dirty Show Head-Honcho, Jerry Vile.

Some of this years confirmed artists include, Brandi Read, Kelley O’Hara, Jeff Van Buskirk, Nina Friday, Lisolette Gilcrest, Bruce Finsilver, Rudy Fig, William Roberts, Lisa Goedert, Maria Reiter, Kostas Mistilis, Greg Loselle, Kevin Bourgeois, Ryan Cronin, Tony Roko, Patrick Harris, Nick Fisher, Audra McKean, Dale Drieling, Dennis Jacobs, Joshua Gaudette, Daniel Pearson and Matthew Martin who was a judge last year, but oddly, has never shown at Cpop before.
©POPpor2nity will run through the end of January 2009.

The following is a video of the first ©POPportunity winners’ exhibit entitled,
“It’s Humble To Be Good”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqWEfWh3yDo

©POPpor2nity is an innovative, artist friendly tweaking of the “vanity gallery” concept, whereby galleries lease space to select artists, a common practice in New York City Galleries, gives every potential artist a chance to exhibit up to 3 pieces for a nominal fee. The only problem is that it is usually the fee is an exorbitant amount of money for an artist to rent the entire gallery- and still have to cut the gallery in a healthy chunk of the sale. With ©Poppor2nity, many fledgling or unknown artists get a chance to exhibit in a world-class gallery at only a fraction of the normal “vanity fee”, while getting an unheard-of 90% of the sale and a chance to compete for their own 4 person exhibit later next year.

Submissions will be taken from now through December 2 - Artists may send up to 3 JPEGS in low to medium resolution to rick@cpop.us by December 2, 2008. Entrants will receive a critique and response within 3 days via email on the status of their inclusion and the amount of submission fee.

©POP Gallery is located at 4160 Woodward Detroit, MI 48226.

WILD AT HEART - THANKSGIVING 2008 EDITION

Hey Kirk-Have a great birthday and holiday!
here is this week's blog post - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Looks like Thanksgiving is just around the corner and a number of people are struggling to find things to be thankful for. With jobs becoming even more scarce, it is getting difficult to remain optimistic here in Michigan. During my show this morning, one of my faithful listeners called today to tell me he is getting laid off from one of the Big 3 and another friend is leaving Michigan for a job down south. Add to this the prospect of the Lions going 0-12, and it is almost enough to take the fun out of the holidays. Heck I won’t even get into the arguments the Native Americans have about the holiday. I just hope to get together with friends, watch football (go Cowboys) and be thankful for what I do have.

If you see this in time, Dr Pepper has extended it’s Guns N Roses contest to 6PM today where you can try to get online or call there toll free number (1-888-DRPEPPER) and leave your info. I heard part of the album when I was at St Andrews this week though I have never really been a big fan of the band. I was there working the Hawthorne Heights show downstairs and only came up once or twice to check things out. I heard most listening parties were getting around 200 people though only about 30 showed up. I think that might have something to do with the venue. Now I love the staff at St Andrews but it is a little bit out of the way and not really the type of place I think off when I think CD listening party. I would think the Crofoot, the Emerald or some other suburban (Royal Oak, Ferndale) bar that caters to a hard rock audience would have gotten a better crowd. To be fair, they didn’t get permission until the last minute and that never helps when trying to promote.

Still, I hate GNR (Slash excepted) but I thank them for my free Dr Pepper.

Talking about a good album release, Nov 22nd marked the 40th Anniversary of one of my favorite albums, The Beatles’ White Album. It was the #1 album when I was born and despite not having any top 40 hits, it has some very memorable songs such as “Back In The USSR”, “Dear Prudence” (which was covered beautifully by Siouxsie and the Banshees), “Helter Skelter”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (a great Harrison song with Clapton on guitar) and “Blackbird”. Also, you got to love song titles like “Piggies”, “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” and “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey”. The plain white cover was designed by pop artist Richard Hamilton and was originally planned to be entitled “A Doll's House” (luckily the band Family had used a similar title). The album is their most musically diverse (a number of songs were inspired by their trip to India) and you can catch the hints of their break-up starting to emerge (thanks Yoko). I have a German white vinyl version which is one of the cornerstones of my music collection. Some influences include Charles Manson’s borrowing of the term Helter Skelter which he construed as predicting a prolonged race war and justifying the murder of wealthy people (I never got that from listening to the album), the famous Paul is dead fiasco and a wonderful Eric Idle led parody group The Rutles.

I had a good time at the Main Art Theatre this weekend with the premiere of “My Name Is Bruce” which stars and is directed by Royal Oak born Bruce Campbell. Bruce basically plays a version of himself in this film and he is currently filming a sequel to a cheesy sci-fi film. Angry at his manager (one of the many Ted Raimi roles in the film) and threatening to fire him, Bruce goes home to his trailer where he is met by a young kid from Gold Lick who believes Bruce is like his heroic characters in his movies and wants Bruce to help save his town from the evil demon Guan Di. The movie is a must for Bruce fans and b-movie aficionados though the appeal might stop there. Bruce has some great one-liners and there are tributes to previous roles such as Ash and Bubba Ho-Tep. Don’t expect too much from the film and you will enjoy it. After the film, Bruce did a Q&A talking about various items like Evil Dead 4 (he feels he is too old to do it justice – Indy 4 anyone), Ash vs Jason vs Freddy (since they said Ash wouldn’t win, he said no), Bubba Nosferatu (he couldn’t figure a way to get his character into the film so he dropped out) and talked a bit about the fun of Brisco County Jr and Burn Notice. He also mentioned that the film was made in his backyard where he apparently had enough room to build a small western style town. I’d hate to mow that yard.

Good news for Cyndi Lauper fans!! David Byrne stated in his blog that he has collaborated with Lauper on a track for his upcoming “Here Lies Love” and she has recorded a special Christmas duet with Swedish rock band The Hives, entitled "A Christmas Duel", which is available as a download-only single.

I talked to Ingrid Michaelson last week when she did her signing at Borders. She reminds me a lot of Lisa Loeb, but in a good way. Her new album, “Be OK” is not an official album but started as an EP which graduated to a full fledged album containing live tracks and covers. She said she has finished her next album which is a little darker than the last and will be out next fall. A portion of all sales of her current album will go to the charity Stand Up To Cancer.

MCB's Jesse Welter was there to shoot the show and the in-store performance and got a nice shot of me doing the interiew.

Danny Boyle was great to talk to last week in anticipation of his new movie “Slumdog Millionaire” (based on the novel “Q&A” by Vikas Swarup). An Indian former street child from Mumbai is a contestant on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepaii’, the Hindi version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’. He had gone onto the game show to reach his missing childhood sweetheart, who he knows watches the show religiously. When he gets to the last question, he is suspected of cheating and must reveal his life story to see how he knows the answers despite not having an education of any kind. The movie was filmed in India in the slums where Boyle criticizes Swarup who has never been in the slums. Boyle believes if you are going to make a film (or write a book) you should go to where you can get real-life experience and not avoid it. The crew used handheld cameras on the street to get a lot of the footage because of this. Boyle also admits that he thought the book was unfilmable until he read Simon (Full Monty) Beaufoy’s script. Boyle felt that he really got to the heart of the book and he says he will usually read the book and take ideas back to the screenplay writer but in this case he could find nothing to add to his script. I am hoping to see the film soon though I have read the book and there are a lot of adaptive changes so be careful. Boyle also brought up in my interview that he is looking at making a sequel to the 28 Days Later franchise but it will depend on many factors. He is working on it though.

I also had the pleasure of talking to comedian Colin Quinn who was at Oakland University this weekend. He is known for his work on MTV’s Remote Control, a tenure as news anchor on Saturday Night Live (1995-1998) and Comedy Central’s The Tough Crowd. He is currently trying to put through a number of projects which he will have control over. He is content doing this and his stand-up and doesn’t see himself doing TV roles or guest appearances. I hope you heard my interview with him this morning on my show on WXOU 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org where we talked about the relevance of Saturday Night Live and Brian Wilson.

Hey, Flaming Lips fans!! You might want to go to the Crofoot on Nov 29th to catch the Detroit premiere of ‘Christmas on Mars: A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips’, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne. The film takes place at Christmas and the colonization of Mars is underway. However, when an oxygen generator/gravity control pod malfunctions, Major Syrtis and his team fear the worst. Syrtis also hallucinates about the birth of a baby, and many other strange things (if you have ever seen them live, you know they can be crazy). Meanwhile, a compassionate alien super-being arrives who inspires and helps the isolated astronauts. The screening will also feature a couple of shorts from local Sci-Fi Comedy troupe, “Iron Core TV”. Listen to WXOU for your chance to win tickets. Actually, the first 2 people to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com will be set up with a pair of tickets for will call. Doors at 8PM or go to Crofoot website for more info.

"Christmas on Mars" is a MOTORCITYBLOG sponsered event as well

My radio show on Thurs will be pre-recorded this week but I will be back in Dec with interviews with the casts of A Bronx Tale and The Rat Pack Is Back. The Rack Pack Is Back, which is playing at the GEM Theatre is a musical tribute to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop, who appeared together on stage and in films during the early-1960s, including the original “Ocean's Eleven”. The group never referred to themselves with that title (preferring the Summit or the Clan) but they had a big effect on establishing Las Vegas as a premiere entertainment town and helped break down racial barriers (they refused to play in places that didn’t treat African Americans equally, including their own member Sammy). I can only wonder what it would have been like to see this group on stage but this is the closest I can get now that all the members are dead (Joey passed away in 2007). The show has each member doing some solo numbers of their greatest hits and a number of ensemble pieces. The actors do pretty decent impressions of these icons though I thought the actor playing Frank Sinatra captured him the best. If you enjoy the memories of these greats and what that era represented, come down to the show and be prepared to enjoy yourself. Go to www.gemdetroit.com for more information.

Well that is it for now. Have a great Thanksgiving week whatever you end up doing. I hope to see some of you ska fans Toasters show tonight at the Magic Stick (WXOU will have a promotions table at the event). Wednesday has a few good shows. I will be at the Yes show at the Fillmore but you can also see Fishbone with Natives Of the New Dawn at St Andrew’s Hall or the Hard Lessons with Bump at the Majestic. On Friday, the Verve Pipe will be at St Andrew’s Hall. Saturday is star filled with the Blue Man Group (see them if you can) playing a couple of night at Caesar’s Windsor, Jeff Daniels is doing his annual fundraiser at the Michigan Theatre and the Electric Six will be at St Andrew’s Hall. I will talk to you all again on next Monday. Until then, take care and remember to email me if you want those Flaming Lips movie tickets.

Detroit’s first screening of Flaming Lips’ "Christmas on Mars"

Saturday, November 29, 2008
8 PM
A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips' visionary frontman Wayne Coyne.

Seven years in the making, Christmas on Mars features original music by the Flaming Lips ("The greatest U.S. band today" - The Guardian), with acting performances by all band members, and many others from their Oklahoma City-based team. Comedian Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and actor Adam Goldberg (Dazed and Confused, Two Days in Paris) also appear, as does performer Steve Burns of the band Steve Burns and the Struggle (who had also appeared in children's television show Blue's Clues). Bradley Beesley and George Salisbury co-directed the movie with Mr. Coyne.

The first Detroit screening of this acoustically demanding sound track is aptly presented in the audio showcase of the Crofoot Ballroom.

It's Christmastime, and the colonization of Mars is underway. However, when an oxygen generator and a gravity control pod malfunction, Major Syrtis (the Lips' Steven Drozd) and his team (including the Lips' Michael Ivins) fear the worst. Syrtis also hallucinates about the birth of a baby, and many other strange things. Meanwhile, a compassionate alien super-being (Coyne) arrives, inspiring and helping the isolated astronauts.

Also screening will be:

Several short films from local Sci-fi-Comedy troupe, Iron Core TV http://skitztv.com/ .
Check out their premiere of episode 4 of Amil and Ewok, and more.

As well as: THE CEMETERY PRECINCTS – Directed by Michael Einheuser & Rob Gulley (12:00) (Michigan 2008) A liberal fantasia played in the key of Z, "The Cemetery Precincts" tells the story of what happens when a couple of political dirty tricksters try a bit of old-school election fraud and scare up more than they bargained for. Includes an homage to "Night of the Living Dead" and lots of blood effects by makeup artist Dan Phillips. Written by Nancy Nall-Derringer. Music provided by Sucker DJ's Mikel O.D., Tom Matich, and Jeff Milo.

Doors 8pm, Movie starts @ 8:30pm.
Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes. This film is not rated.

Deadstring Brothers - Magic Stick Dietroit - Sat Nov 29th

Last Minute show addition at The Magic Stick on Saturday, 11/29

Touring behind their Bloodshot debut Starving Winter Report, Detroit’s acclaimed Deadstring Brothers found what they were looking for in London, where the Heavy Load club scene was packing in rock n’ roll fans who danced all night to bands like The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes and The Allman Brothers. A bona-fide scene had developed that continues to grow today, where young players seeking kindred souls to play blues and country-tinged rock come together.

Energized by this burgeoning scene, and with a number of new British players in town, the Deadstring Brothers returned to Detroit to record Silver Mountain. Recorded in the Deadstring Brothers’ own recording studio, Silver Mountain boasts the tunesmanship of The Faces and the barroom howl of The Band stewed together in homage to the blues of the American South and dancehalls of the urban factory North.

Music like this formed the genesis of album-oriented FM rock -- Silver Mountain showcases high energy bluesy rave-ups and hymnal country ballads. Harmonica player Mickey Raphael also took a break from his place alongside the great Willie Nelson, contributing to “The Light Shines Within” and “Slow Down”.

Raw and feverish, Silver Mountain is the sound of a band working at its peak, synthesizing common influences (regardless of one’s birthplace) with a modern edge. Cut from jaws of Michigan steel, East London pubs and honed from months on the never-ending road, the Deadstring Brothers testify to the soul-saving grace of rock n’ roll.

MCB-EATS: Review of TOAST Birmingham

TOAST expands into downtown Birmingham!
MOTORCITYBLOG was invited to attend “Press Day” at TOAST ‘s newest location on Pierce Street this past Tuesday afternoon. If you have toured the Ferndale breakfast circuit more than likely you have eaten at TOAST Ferndale on Woodward. With my husband in tow we were ready to try this new breakfast joint. I was gleefully surprised to stumble into the visually stunning, sophisticated yet comfortable atmosphere with a full BAR plus LUNCH and DINNER on the menu.

TOAST stands out among Birmingham’s chain coffee shops and bakeries not just with their hip and inviting décor but also with a menu that you want to get to know better. Toast gives Birmingham a much needed blast of cool. A place to sip coffee, get a bite, grab a drink, meet a friend or neighbor and stay for a while.

The primary dining room is a glowing, functional stunner with red and gold tones to warm you on the coldest of days. Dressed in Orikri paintings that flow with the room but burn with a life of their own –as if the works are windows to other worlds. The second, “Blue room” is a very hep, cool and quieter alternative with chocolate brown sofas, soft chairs and a gorgeous shade of blue walls. There are plenty of interesting design elements to the room if you are into that; if not, it all recedes into a background glow.

Looking closely at the menu nothing is as simple as it seems. It is divided into 4 sections: “eat” which is Toast’s version of appetizers , “good” the salads, “food” the entrée’s, and finally “yum” the desserts.
Let’s start out with the Ahi Tacos, a favorite of mine having spent years in California and Hawaii—and a welcome menu surprise as we in Michigan trudge into winter. I was immediately impressed with the quality and size of the fish exploding out of what seemed to be an authentic corn tortilla. Coolness and crispness provided by jicama slaw and salsa fresco. With an extra kick from the smokedchili-cardamom cream they were warm and satisfying on a blustery November day. Take me back to 80 degree weather even with the high humidity!!
The salads look as titillating as the rest of the menu, full of interesting ingredients with Toast’s own take on the classic. The bistro salad has bacon, candied walnuts, goat cheese on spinach with a roasted pepper-citrus vinaigrette.
Our second course was the Carnitas, pulled pork on top of a savory green onion-cilantro corn waffle. Now that you don’t see everyday. For me this was lacking a certain something but it gets an A plus for inventiveness and MCB sees potential here. I like the idea of savory waffles and pancakes and would love to see them more often.

Third, the absolute MCB winner; the all-flavor encompassing Toast version of an open faced burger-- “The Joint”. Super satisfying; it is a large size Piedmontese patty smothered in basil aioli and tomato jam atop a bed of blue cheese stuffing, a rich bread and cheese mixture to balance out the crispy onions on top served with a little sweet carrot slaw on the side and all of this for only 10 bucks!!
Toast also has a great wine selection--I do not hand out this complement easily, but the Bennett Family Chardonnay I had recommended to me was perfection. As well as great beers on tap like PBR, Stella, Bell’s and Guinness also a nice selection of bottled beer. Also Bloody Mary’s (can’t wait to try!), Bellini’s, Mimosa’s and their own signature martini’s.

They have it all.
If this doesn’t win you over than the Apple Betty will, just deliciousness all served up in one warm bowl of goodness with candied pecans and homemade cinnamon ice cream. This is serious comfort food—so comfortable you want to live in it food. Finally we sampled a few of the fresh sweets from the pastry bar in the foyer as we checked our email using the free wireless internet.

Yum!
We were excited to hear about the Taco Tuesdays; tacos and Dos Equis for 2 bucks each and DJ spinning latin themed music. Look for the “Good Girl/Bad Girl Night” coming soon from what we heard.

And we will definitely be there this Wednesday night; from 9-2am for TOAST Birmingham’s Grand Opening Bar Night with FREE drinks, FREE menu samples and DJ.
Thanks to Toast proprietors, Thom & Regan Bloom, and thanks to all our friends at TOAST for giving us something to smile about this fall.

BLOG moment - Detroit Urban Craft Fair / TOAST Birmingham

Detroit Urban Craft Fair keeps getting better and better every year

TOAST opens second location in Birmingham

So TGIF because this week has been insane - I am not talking regular as-per-usual MCB insane because we run pretty hard most of the time anyway but to be frank its been a craptacular kind of week and there have been 2 specific things I want to mention that helped us get through to today:

1st off - Detroit Urban Craft Fair
I know that DUCF is so last week but I was given a number of gifts this week that were purchased from the fair and they are awesome...MCB attended DUCF and of course dropped some dough...we had a conversation with Jennifer from The Fillmore Detroit who was stunned by the great turnout and constant stream of people flowing in and out of the venue.
The Fillmore Detroit should host this event from now - so much better than the Magic Stick.
We are going to play favorites for change
check out Detroit Dollface Jewelry

2nd - MCB has spent the last 3 days hanging at the new TOAST location in Birmingham

We were invited out for "Press Day" on Tuesday and we never left the joint and have a weekend post coming (photos/review/etc) that will show you why TOAST is cooler than cool.

PBR on tap - awesome food (we sampled pretty much everything) and killer decor

Plus check this out:
FREE FOOD / BOOZE / BEER NEXT WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 26TH FOR THE BIG BAR NIGHT...
HOW CAN YOU PASS THAT UP???

Last night Special Guest DJ John Arnold was spinning kustom klassiks
TOAST is the new MCB favorite for sure - more to come soon on this one

Tickets: $5

CHRISTMAS ON MARS:
A Fantastical FILM Freakout Featuring The Flaming Lips
Psychedelic rock band the Flaming Lips present Christmas on Mars: A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips' visionary frontman Wayne Coyne. Coyne.

Meanwhile, a compassionate alien superbeing (Coyne) arrives, inspiring and helping the isolated astronauts.

UPCOMING: KRISTEENYOUNG - THE MODERN EXCHANGE SOUTHGATE - SUN NOV 30TH

KRISTEENYOUNG have just finished work on their forthcoming album
“Music for Strippers, Hookers, and the Odd On-looker”
which features a duet with Fall Out Boy front man Patrick Vaughn Stump on the song “That’s What It Takes, Dear”. The legendary Tony Visconti (Bowie, T. Rex) produced the album.
The group will also embark on their first full US tour since touring with Morrissey and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (dates below).
Front-woman Kristeen Young says of working with Patrick, “From the moment I first heard ‘Sugar, We’re Going Down’ I was a goner. Like all heart-stopping moments, I remember my surroundings clearly…Home Depot parking lot, in the band van, and I couldn’t wait to hear the song again and again. The voice (that leapt out of the speakers and wrapped itself around my entire circulatory system) not only possessed the obligatory radio-ring, but had depth, flexibility, and made all the melody choices that break your heart while simultaneously making you feel like you can conquer all.
When I wrote the duet, I knew that Patrick Stump was the very capable man for the job at hand. The song is about the duality of the human spirit. It’s about a battle that a person has with one’s self when at the lowest of low times. Lucky me, not only did Patrick’s voice caress these oddly rhythmed melody lines better than how I imagined, Patrick, personally, seemed to embody the role. He embraced the song with focus and optimism, and was an actual lift of light to my often heavy (and…YES) depressed soul. I am so fortunate that Patrick loved my song so, and that he had no reservations about expressing it.”

Sponge's follow up CD, the critically lauded “Wax Ecstatic,” includes the hit songs "Wax Ecstatic" and "Have You Seen Mary?”

Now touring in support of their newest CD “Galore Galore,” (Icon/Bellum), Sponge continues to stand out as one of rock’s most charismatic live acts. Sponge front man Vinnie Dombroski's powerful voice, heart-on-his- sleeve lyrics and full throttle stage presence captivates any audience he steps in front of.

Bruce Campbell comes back to Royal Oak to showcase new movie

Bruce Campbell returns to Royal Oak to showcase his latest movie
Read more about it on the DetNews website and get your tickets here

Main Art Theatre Royal Oak
One Week Only!
Starts Friday, November 21
Bruce Campbell In Person Fri, Sat & Sun
Nov 21, 22 & 23 at 7:00 & 10:00pm!

"When the small mining town of Gold Lick, Oregon needs to rid itself of a vengeful monster, they kidnap actor Bruce Campbell—star of the Evil Dead trilogy, Bubba Ho-tep and countless B-movie horror films—and recruit him to be their local savior. Mortified at first, Bruce eventually goes along with the plan, convinced that it's all an elaborate birthday present from his agent (Ted Raimi). But the scheme goes horribly wrong when their hero, known more for fighting directors than mythical warriors, haphazardly leads the town in battle against the beast. Confronted by a monster that's not a guy in a rubber suit, and with the blood of innocents on his hands, Bruce has to choose between the harsh reality of Gold Lick and the sanctity of his former, artificial life. A horror comedy written by Mark Verheiden ("Smallville," "Battlestar Galactica"), co-starring Grace Thorsen and Taylor Sharpe. Directed by Bruce Campbell. Official Web Site "

Spin Magazine calls Silverghost, “lo-fi, buzzy dance rock sound is equal parts cool and crazed”

Evelyn Glennie is many things; intriguing, innovative, extraordinary and deaf. As Beethoven would put his ear to the piano to feel the vibrations, she plays barefoot to feel them. Join us as the gifted soloist Evelyn Glennie transcends sound. Then tune into the two piece Silverghost featuring Marcie Bolen (Von Bondies). They create a blended mix with female/male vocals, fuzz guitar, analog synths and a drum machine. They are signed to Detroit’s Italy Records (White Stripes, Hentchmen) and produced by Warn Defevor (His Name Is Alive.) You must purchase tickets through the 37/11 program to attend the party. WILD AT HEART - Monday November 17th 2008

Hey Kirk-You kicked out some cool videos this weekend
here is this week's blog post - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

What a busy morning I have been having trying to get things organized for my radio show.

I started off today doing an interview with Aaron Stegemoller who plays “The Bonze” (Cio-Cio San’s uncle) in the Detroit Opera production of Madame Butterfly and what a beautiful production it is. Originally, the opera premiered in 1904 and Puccini based it in part on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long. The story follows a Japanese geisha who enters into an arranged marriage with US naval officer B. F. Pinkerton. Cio-Cio San falls so much in love with the officer that she even changes her religion and adopts the ways of her husbands’ nationality. By doing this, her uncle outs her and she is shunned by her family and society for forsaking the old gods but she doesn’t care because of her deep love. Finally, Pinkerton ships off and promises to return. Three years pass and money is running low and despite the warnings of friends, Cio-Cio believes he will return. Besides, she also has a son by him. When he finally returns, it is with an American bride and he thought she would have forgotten him. She gives her son to her husband but takes her own life leaving Pinkerton to forever remember his mistake. The opera is also the basis for the play Miss Saigon in case it sounded familiar. The music is wonderful and once again, the production has beautiful sets. The sets bend downward which Aaron states is to allow the audience to see as much of the stage as possible though there is some worry (though not too much) that a misstep could land one in the orchestra pit if not careful. This is a very assessable piece for opera beginners and the cast is superb and bringing out the emotions of the relationship. You can go to www.motopera.org for more info on showtimes.

For my rock ‘n roll fans, The Album Pinkerton by the rock band Weezer was based loosely on the opera. Like the Puccini opera, the album makes reference to Japan, the Japanese people, and Japanese culture from the perspective of an outsider who considers Japan fragile and sensual.

I have heard of creating atmosphere, but Sisters Of Mercy takes it to new heights when their smoke machines on Saturday basically hid the band in their own smoke screen. For a minute, I thought I was watching a stage version of John Carpenter’s “The Fog”. The opening band, Hypernova, however was highly visible and pounding out some nice Goth rock and invoking memories of “Dark Entries” era Bauhaus.

Brian Wilson put on an excellent show at the Michigan Theatre and it was a shame that it was only about 70% full. He started the show with a bunch of classic songs such as “Good Vibrations”, “Surfer Girl”, “Do It Again”, “California Girls, etc. The second hour was a recreation of his new album, “That Lucky Old Sun” in its entirety which sounded wonderful. He then did a 6 song encore. I met with Brian and despite obvious signs that years of mental issues have taken their toll, you can tell his mind is still active and he said he does plan on doing a new album after the tour is done. I wish him the best because his new album is very good and you can feel his love of the Beach Boys past and the state of California are in full view with this work.

I have also noticed that the second year of the libraries museum passes is in effect with a few new choices such as the Birmingham Historical Museum & Park. I used my ration this week to get a pass for the DIA so I could see the new exhibit by Jane Hammond in the print gallery. Hammond uses a myriad of techniques and materials, along with prints and books, where she uses borrowed images that she manipulates into various varied works such as altered postcards, clown outfits and numerous other ideas. Opening on the 19th is there photography exhibit photographs showcasing the works of such photographers as André Kertész, Arnold Newman and Robert Mapplethorpe. “In the Company of Artists” brings together portraits of artists, their families, friends, and surroundings along with dancers, writers and musicians and other individuals from artistic and bohemian circles from the late 1890s to present day. Go to your library to learn more about these passes.

There are some exciting events coming up in the area starting with Ann Arbor. If you wanted to see the sold out Ingrid Michaelson at the Ark, you can still see her if you get to the Border’s bookstore by 12:30PM on the 20th where she will be doing an in store performance and CD signing. She has a new song out called “Be OK” which I played on my show this morning and admit it is quite good. If things work out, I will be interviewing her after the signing and will play it on my Monday show (tune into 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org between 8-10AM).

You can go to the station website or my MySpace page for more info (myspace.com/wildatheart_13). Ingrid is a is a indie-pop singer/songwriter best known for her single "The Way I Am" (peaked at #37 on the top 40 charts last year).

If movies are your things, go to the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak to meet Bruce Campbell (who was born in Royal Oak) promoting his new movie, “My Name Is Bruce” which is a nutshell is about Campbell (playing a sleazy version of himself) who, after being harassed and mistaken by fans to be a character much like Ash from the Evil Dead series is abducted from his trailer park home to fight against a Chinese war deity. I can’t wait. They will be having showings at 7 & 10PM Fri, Sat & Sun. I am interviewing Bruce on Friday after the Q&A and will have that interview on my show Monday morning. If you haven’t seen it yet, I also recommend tracking down the movie “Bubba Ho-Tep” in which Bruce plays a nursing home Elvis who gets in a fight against a soul stealing mummy with the help of JFK (you just got to see it to understand it).
On Thursday, I will have an interview on my radio show with movie director Danny Boyle of “Trainspotting” and “28 Day Later” fame. He is in town promoting his new movie “Slumdog Millionaire” which is about a young street beggar in India who appears on a game show (think “Who wants To Be A Millionaire” and wins big, thus raising suspicions from the game show host and law enforcement.

Cool upcoming shows include the big one tomorrow at Ford Field where the material girl will be playing. Punk fans will be allowed to do see the Japanese rockers Dir En Grey @ Clutch Cargos if they don’t want to Vogue. On the 19th, indie band Steel Train will play at the Shelter (lead singer Jack used to date Scarlett Johansson – the bastard). Reggae fans can unite at the majestic to see the Wailers rock the house down. On Thurs 20th, you can be a private dancer at the Palace with Tina Turner, chill out with Calexico at the Crofoot or punk out with me and Agent Orange at the Magic Stick (win tickets at WXOU). Also, you can still catch Avenue Q at the Fisher and the “Rat Pack Returns” to the GEM (interview pending) just in time for the holidays.

"Faereal Underground" Gallery Opening - Our Gallery Detroit - Sat Nov 22nd 7-10pm

Photojournalist Andrea Cesarek holds art show to display photos documenting the recent sighting of faeries in Detroit

Faereal Underground
Gallery Opening for her new photography series
Sat, Nov 22nd 7-10 pm
Our Gallery
849 Henry St
Detroit, MI 48201

After hearing rumors of faerie sightings in Detroit, MI Andrea Cesarek set out with her camera to try to document these Detroit Faeries. After several unsuccessful attempts, Cesarek claims to have some powerful faerie imagery to show Detroit. She is holding a reception at Our Gallery in Detroit on November 22nd to share these photographs. There will be complimentary live music, wine, and snacks.

Andrea is a freelance photojournalist originally from the Metro Detroit area. After one year studying fine arts at the College for Creative Studies, she moved to Canada at the age of 19 to attend film school. After 4 years working in the Toronto Film Industry she moved to Florida for 3 years to keep warm and focus on her photography company, See the Invisible Photography. In 2007 she was bit by the travel bug and spent almost a year photographing and roaming around Europe and Northern Africa before coming back to Detroit.

Currently, she splits her time between Detroit and Ft. Lauderdale and is planning her next journey to Peru in the spring. In October, Andrea hung a show at PJ's Lager House displaying eerie bone photography from the Sedlec Ossurary in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic, which are available to view at the consignment shop at Izzy's Raw Art Gallery in Corktown.

Next month she will be hosting a joint show at Izzy's Raw Art Gallery and in the spring, at the Cass Café with good friend and artist Marianne Burrows.

FREE MP3s: The CATARACS // PLUSHGUN

Some albums are like a party in a box – put it on the stereo and you know you’re going to have a good time. Plushgun’s Pins and Panzers bounces in to the room, passes out the glowsticks, hands you a beer and tells your ass to dance.

The pumping synth lines are a perfect foil to Daniel Ingala’s sensitive wordsmith tendencies that work to create addictive indie-pop with a bittersweet edge.Plushgun is the brainchild of Daniel Ingala and grew out of the cramped confines of his overpriced and undersized bedroom in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

After creating the song “Just Impolite” and posting it to his MySpace page, the project quickly took off with songs featured in the web-TV series “We Need Girlfriends” and rising to #1 in the Alternative Rock Channel on Ourstage.com. When he was ready to start playing live shows, Ingala recruited his friends Taylor Armstrong and Matt Bogdanow.Plushgun released their self-titled debut EP this past August, and are now pleased to share their upcoming full-length, Pins and Panzers, along with a second disc of remixes by Andrew WK, Jesse Novak (M.I.A., Santogold) and Justin Strauss (Depeche Mode, Marc Almond, Carl Cox).

The band also just shot a music video for “Just Impolite” with director Tyler Shields, featuring Juno Temple (“The Other Boleyn Girl,” “Atonement,” “Notes on a Scandal,” and upcoming “Mr. Nobody” and “The Year One”), Brittany Snow (“Hairspray,” “Prom Night,” and upcoming “Clock Tower” and “The Vicious Kind”) and Shiloh Fernandez (upcoming “Cadillac Records” and “The United States of Tara”).

Pins & Panzers features cover art by Patrick Smith, and is the third Plushgun release to feature original credited work by an up and coming Brooklyn artist; the other two were done by Yoko Furusho on the single for “Dancing in a Minefield,” and Beth Newell who did the self-titled EP art.

The Cataracs are David Singer-Vine, 20 aka “Campa,” and Niles Hollowell-Dhar, 19, “Cyrano”. Both members share vocalist duties with Cyrano acting as the sole producer. The pair have developed a electro-pop sound that combines the dance floor sensibilities of electronic music with pop melodies, a risque edge, and east bay swagger. These divergent sounds are effectively cohesive when brought together by The Cataracs’ energy, sense of humor, and undeniably entertaining chemistry.

FREE MP3: PAPER ROUTE - Magic Stick - Wed Nov 19th

Paper Route are coming to the Magic Stick on Wednesday, 11/19/08

“Empty House” Mp3

Influenced by the likes of Radiohead and Sigur Ros and comparable to the Postal Service, this ambient indie band have been making serious waves in their hometown of Nashville, TN.

The four piece brings their passion for art to life on stage – creating a splendid harmony of both audio and visual components.

They recently released and are touring in support of their Are We All Forgotten EP on Low Altitude. There’s no better time than now to catch them live – a relatively unknown (for now) diamond in the rough.

PHOTOS: Guitar Center District Drumoff - Detroit MI Nov 11th 2008 by Alex Conley

Last week MCB's Alex Conley made his way out to Guitar Center Southfield for the District Drumoff Contest - which was won by ANTHONY BURNS who was the finalist from the Saginaw Guitar Center contest...

he makes his way to the Regionals for his chance to win $25,000 in gear and all kinds of endorsements and opportunities - CONGRATS ANTHONY!!!!

check these photos from the event and make sure to check out the metro detroit area Guitar Center for all your music needs and holiday shopping....

Here is what MCB's Alex Conley had to say about the drumoff:

"Guitar Center of Southfield played host to the district finals of Drum off 2008, the largest drum competition in the world.

Some of the best drummers from across the country compete for fame and $25,000 cash. Other perks include endorsement deals, custom drum kits and $4,000 in shopping sprees. And best of all, a write up in Modern Drummer that will hopefully start a career for a lucky and talented musician.

Drummers from all over michigan participated, coming from as far as Kalamazoo to compete. Each a winner from there local store and looking to prove they are the best Michigan has to offer. The small room was packed with supporters and family member, eager to see there own local drummer win, but supportive of all contestants.

By the end of the night Anthony Burns from Saginaw was declared the winner. His impressive skills wowed the crowd like none other. Afterward, he performed a five minute solo that was actually better than his contest winning performance.Given the level of talent so far, the Chicago finals in December should be something to watch." - MCB's Alex Conley

BADLAND meets These United States - Detroit Nov 13th 2008

These United States
...over a Makers Mark I sat down with "These United States", like hooking up with that friend you have not seen in a million years it was like no time had passed and we just picked up where we had last left off. Collectively "These United States" is a band made up of multi-talented musicians with roots spread from Illinois to Kentucky. Based out of the D.C area, these guys lay down a straight ahead rockin' roll back beat that takes you in and introduces you to a mixture of melody and emotion spread across intentional lyrics evoking place and time.

These United States"These United States" are currently touring with core members: Front Man - Jesse Elliot, Guitarist - J. Tom Hnatow, Guitarist - Justin Craig and Drummer - Robby Cosenza. Though the guys had been through the Michigan area in the past, playing the Magic Bag earlier in 08, they agreed that touring through Detroit proper and bringing their brand of music to PJ's Lager House was definitely a cool time!

Located at 1254 Michigan Ave. in Corktown, The Lager House plays host to many local and touring acts, featuring a variety of genres in music that range from Heavy to Hip Hop and Punk to Rock a Billy. PJ, owner of The Lager House, is as true a believer in Detroit music and art as one can get, consistently bringing in new talent that will make any night at the Lager House a night worth being a part of.
These United States

With the break away buzz surrounding "These United States" the band, on tour in promotion of their latest CD "A Picture Of The Three Of Us In the Garden Of Eden" is genuine in the music, solid in the talent and is honest about all that is a touring band...and if invited, make no mistake they will sleep on your couch and drink your beer.

CPOPportunity2 - CPOP Gallery Detroit - Call for Artists now through Dec 2nd - Show Dec 13th 2008

©POPpor2nity
©POP Gallery’s All-Media Exhibit for New and Exciting Artists!
OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS Now Through December 2nd 2008

©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

1) Call For Artists! (at least for those who have never before shown at ©POP Gallery).
©POP Gallery is proud to reprise the hugely successful twist on the “vanity gallery” concept, ©POPpor2nity, with an IMMEDIATE CALL FOR ARTISTS, now through December 2. For the second juried, all-media exhibit, appropriately entitled, “©Poppor2nity.”

2) Exhibit- Opening /Artists’ Reception: Saturday, December 13, from 7PM - 10PM.
It’s ©POPpor2nity – The second all-media call for artists and exhibit for all artists who have never shown at the gallery before. For a nominal submission fee every ©POPpor2nity artist will be featured in arguably Detroit’s most popular and influential and ground-breaking gallery, ©POP, with an opening reception for the artists of ©POPpor2nity on Saturday, December 13 from 6 PM until 10 PM. Participants will be juried by a panel of 10 locally and internationally renowned artists, media folk, celebrities and notables, with the winners to be featured in their own 4-person showcase of champions exhibition at a later date at the storied Detroit gallery.
The following is a video of the first ©POPportunity winners’ exhibit entitled,
“It’s Humble To Be Good”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqWEfWh3yDo

This innovative, artist friendly tweaking of the “vanity gallery” concept, whereby galleries lease space to select artists, a common practice in New York City Galleries, gives every potential artist a chance to exhibit up to 3 pieces for a nominal fee.

3) Exhibit and receive 90% of the proceeds upon sale!
Every artist can submit and potentially exhibit up to 3 pieces of wall-hung or free standing sculptural art (conceptual and Installation art to be judged on space required) and if sold, the artist will receive 90% of the proceeds of the sale in an exhibit, which will commence, Saturday, December 13 at 7 PM.

4) Receive detailed and constructive advise from an experienced industry leader.
©POP, one of the first galleries anywhere dedicated to the once underground and now internationally renowned pop culture art movement, will critique every submission with at least a 3000 + word summation of the artists submissions. On a first come-first served basis, ©POP will choose a limited number of artists culled through MySpace, Deviant Art, various art blogs and the local media, allowing up to 3 pieces (size restrictions apply) and for a nominal submission fee (anywhere from $125 to $225 depending on the amount of pieces accepted) to become part of this exciting array of various media and styles. ©POPportunity in 2007 changed the way many galleries do business by rethinking the “vanity gallery” concept to great success through sales and recognition for all participants. Now, with the economic situation putting the squeeze on everyone’s pocketbook, ©POP gives artists the opportunity to sell their work at reduced prices to the public while maintaining their usual or even increased commission profit! Everyone benefits! Other galleries may be closing, art sales may be in a slump and our core local industry may be in jeopardy, but once again ©POP finds a way to offer artists and patrons greater opportunity while maintaining the high level of quality and innovation everyone has come to expect for almost fifteen years from this renowned cultural institution.

5) Submissions- Now through December 2 - Artists may send up to 3 JPEGS in low to medium resolution to rick@cpop.us by December 2, 2008. Entrants will receive a critique and response within 3 days via email on the status of their inclusion and the amount of submission fee.

©Pop Gallery is located at 4160 Woodward Detroit, MI 48226.Phone us at (313) 833-9901, contact us by email at adriel@cpop.com or visit us on-line at www.myspace.com/cpopgallery

MCB was asked to come down to cover The 2008 GUVVY's presented by ARTSERVE which is a statewide nonprofit organization that seeks to cultivate the creative potential of Michigan’s arts and cultural sector to enhance the public health and well-being of Michigan, its people and communities. Look for a follow up from Amy Palomar as she attends the black tie event tonight.

ArtServe Michigan is also the producer of Michigan’s longest running, largest statewide awards gala recognizing leaders in the arts; the 23rd Annual Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture (The Guvvys), which take place Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA).

This year’s International Achievement Award (IAA) winners are Grammy-nominated Musician Bob James and his longtime friend and colleague director/producer/writer/lyricist Jack O’Brien.
In total, 22 artists, arts and cultural organizations, arts educators and civic and business leaders from across the state of Michigan will be named as Guvvy honorees for their dedication to arts and culture, within 10 different categories.

The Guvvys are a two-day celebration that also includes the Student Event on November 14, 2008 where middle and high school students explore creative career options through a talk-back session with the International Award recipients and hands-on workshops.

The Student Event is designed to inspire young creative minds to explore creative career possibilities.

The Black Keys
The Black Keys Live at the Crystal Ballroom (Nonesuch Records)

Nonesuch Records will release The Black Keys Live at the Crystal Ballroom DVD on November 18, 2008. Produced and directed by Lance Bangs (R.E.M.’s Road Movie), the disc will include 17 live songs; original music videos for “Your Touch,” “Just Got To Be,” and “Strange Times;” and behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the band’s most recent album, Attack &Release.
The live performance was recorded on April 4, 2008 at a sold-out show at The Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR.

The Black Keys are well known for their energetic, high-volume live shows. The Chicago Tribune said, “Akron duo The Black Keys created a mighty ruckus at a sold-out Riviera Theatre…” and the Orange County Register lauded the “raw and relentless fury of their riveting set at House of Blues Anaheim,” going on to say that “…it felt like we had all been transported to a dive bar in some swampy corner of Mississippi. And it felt good. Damn good.”

The band’s fifth full-length LP, Attack &Release, was released in April by Nonesuch Records and debuted on the Billboard album chart at #14—marking the their highest position to date as well as the The Black Keys’ best selling release. The Los Angeles Times called the record “…without doubt the Keys’ most dynamic effort yet” and Pitchfork called it their “…most adventurous album to date,” while the Boston Globe said “Tossed in among the midtempo grooves are straight-ahead rockers…, all snarl and swagger, and delivered with an off-kilter tension reminiscent of the early Keys’ two-dudes-in-a-basement sensibility. Attack &Release proves that cleaning up the boys still won’t stop them from tracking mud all over the house.”

Produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album), Attack &Release was recorded at engineer Paul Hamann’s Suma Studio outside Cleveland. Initial collaboration began when Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) approached the band to write songs for an album he was developing with the late R&B legend Ike Turner. As singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney began composing tracks for Turner early last year, they quickly realized they were actually laying the groundwork for a new album of their own.

Attack &Release thus became The Black Keys’ first collaborative effort as it morphed into their own album with Danger Mouse as producer. By recording in an actual studio (another first), Auerbach and Carney were given the opportunity to add a variety of instruments to their usual simple set-up—including organ, moog, and banjo.

Rob Zombie meets the Punisher

Rob Zombie – ‘Warzone’

Here is a stream of Rob Zombie’s ‘War Zone’ the lead single from the soundtrack PUNISHER: WAR ZONE, from Marvel Comics’ latest film adaptation of fictional vigilante and deadly antihero Frank Castle. The lethal motion picture soundtrack features a powerful collection of A-list rockers including the first new music in 3 years from Rob Zombie in addition to heart-pounding songs from rock icons such as Seether, Slayer, Slipknot and Rise Against. The fifteen-track album attacks stores on 11/25/08.
The film opens nationwide on December 5th, 2008.

The original track “War Zone”, written for and inspired by the film, contains the kind of raw, throttling energy that has made Rob Zombie a platinum selling artist. About his contribution, Rob Zombie said: "I love writing music for films, rather than just throwing them an unwanted B side or remix. This track was written exclusively for Punisher War Zone.
A punishing track for a punishing movie."

PHOTOS: Girl Talk @ Eagle Theatre Nov 2008

MCB's Paul Hitz will be out at the show tonight to snag more shots like this one of the Girl Talk show....this shot was from DEMF MOVEMENT 2008

Get your tickets here for Girl Talk tonight @ Eagle Theatre (Crofoot)

This picture slideshow from last nights Girl Talk will be getting much bigger so keep checking in for updates from Paul Hitz and Amy Palomar who said there was barely room to breath in the Eagle Theatre let alone move around -the place was jammed!

A few other MCB hot shots ended up back stage with Jess Hughes from EODM last night
(these guys played to a full house are simply one of the most gracious and fun bands around)

We were able to get our video camera rolling for our brand of off the cuff interview - look for that later on tonight.....we were tempted to go across the room for a chat with Jack White who came out for the EODM show but we opted to snag the interview with Jesse instead of becoming what of the buzzing bees hovering around his corner of the room.

He has an MCB card and hopefully will be in touch for a little MCB love.

Next up is Tom Morello this coming Saturday night....what do you got?

Hey Kirk-Are you digging this snow?
Here is this week's blog post - Wild Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

As regular readers of this blog know I go to a lot of concerts (over 120 this year alone) and it really bugs me when stupid people go to the shows. It just boggles my mind that someone can spend $20-$100 on tickets and then act enough like an idiot to actually get kicked out the show before the band you wanted to see even gets on stage.

At ICP, a guy wearing a Santa suit started giving the security people a hard time because he didn’t want to show his ticket every time he left the floor and wanted to get back in. Sure enough, 5 minutes later, Santa gets kicked out and misses a kick ass concert. Now some people are thinking that “well, it was an ICP show and there fans are known to be a little special”, but I found the majority of fans to have been really nice and giving. Besides, this happens at all concerts, whether it is the jerk that got into a fight at Michael Franti & Spearhead with someone because they didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom or the father who had a bullet in his pocket and dropped in on the floor at a Hanson (yep, the MMMbop kids) show (I felt sorry for his crying daughter who never got to see them).

I can almost understand young kids getting into trouble, but it usually the adults like the woman who got in trouble at one venue where she got overly drunk and tried to stiff the place on her tab. She was surprised when she was getting escorted out and left the place breaking the glass on the door with her shoe on the way out. Oh yeah, and when at a venue, try not to remove big signs because you might have to pay for it and be kicked out anyway. Most security guards don’t get enough respect at venues though a few need to chill out. My finger is finally feeling good after some guards through a kid into me after a NOFX show (heck they didn’t even notice what they did and the cops in the street were no help either so why were they there). Also, when someone reports someone puked on the stairs at a Kings Of Leon show, maybe you should call someone to clean it up instead of letting everyone walk through it (pretty gross). And when kids are crowd surfing (like at The Academy Is), let the kids come to you. Don’t just reach over and crush people to get to them because you might really hurt someone more and these kids are just trying to have a good time.

That is my bitch session for now about some idiots so remember when you are going to a concert, don’t drink more than you can handle (you might get kicked out or fall asleep like that girl at the Rancid show), be respectful of those around you and try not to lash out in anger (getting a slight bump is no reason to miss a show you paid good money for), don’t bring stupid items into a show that you know are illegal and can get you kicked out (getting a buzz during Phil Lesh is cool but not when you find yourself outside the venue), don’t argue with security because if you keep harping at them after being talked to you might find yourself gone from venue and lastly, if you have an issue talk to a security guard or better yet, ask for a manager, to get it resolved.

OK, now for some fun stuff. I went to see Avenue Q this past week at the Fisher and had a really great time. I ran into a bunch of friends at the show who also enjoyed it though the show is not for everyone. If you see Avenue Q, you need to have a good sense of humor and not be turned off my mad puppet sex. You always know there is some old couple who have no idea what they are getting themselves into and leave at the intermission feeling violated, but being at this site, I’m sure no one reading this will have that reaction. The show is basically Sesame Street for adults with a combination of real actors and puppet characters on stage who live in a rundown tenement supped by Gary Coleman. They even have funny little animated clips throughout the show and a pair of care bears rip-offs. Some of the puppet characters seem to have been inspired by some classic Sesame Street characters such as roommates Rod and Nicky seem to be Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie and Trekkie Monster bares a close resemblance to Cookie Monster (though his addiction is porn, not cookies). This show should resonate well with adults who grew up on that show as these characters, being in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems like losing their jobs or disillusioned by their post college careers (sound familiar). The whole play is brought together by the main character, Princeton, and his search for a purpose in life which almost makes him lose out on the love of his life, Kate Monster. There is a lot of adult themes in the play, my favorite being the song "The Internet is For Porn" which is what it means as Kate tries to bring up all the good things about the internet while Trekkie Monster always brings in back to porn. Other good songs are "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?" (which I am still trying to figure out), "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "It Sucks to Be Me". The show is a lot of fun and I do recommend it. Cole Porter (who plays the out-of-work comedian Brian will be on my radio show this Thursday at 9:30AM – 88.3FM or tune in to www.wxou.org).

Speaking of concerts earlier, I was happy to interview a wonderful band called Carolina Liar who opened for The Academy Is on Sunday. When we met at Clutch Cargos, I went with the band to a room in the basement to do the interview and didn’t realize they also had a fetish convention going on in the basement. Needless to say, when we turned one corner to see a girl getting a spanking it was hard to keep focused. The naughty maid who started to dust us off and calling us dirty didn’t help much either. Welcome to the rock-n-roll dream. After a bit of time to get refocused, I learned that the lead singer, Chad, is originally from South Carolina and grew up on a diet of 80’s bands like A-Ha and Depeche Mode. Things were stagnant and he quit his regular job when fate intervened when he got introduced to Swedish producer Max Martin (Backstreet Boys, Pink, Kelly Clarkson). With the backing of some fine Swedish musicians, they put together their first album "'Coming to Terms' which came from Chad thinking about losing his job, having a relationship go sour, and the anticipation of knowing that your life is going to change. Having this mix of nationality hasn’t impeded their work but allowed something special to come out of the mix. If you get the chance, pick up the record or give it a listen on itunes. You’ll be glad you did.

In the “to do” list for the week, there are a few good shows coming up. On Tuesday 11th, I hope to see a bunch of you at the Gov’t Mule show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. I had the opening band, Back Door Slam, on my show a few months ago and they play and infectious blues rock style. They are from the Isle of Man (home to the Bee Gees and sci-fi writer Nigel Kneale of Quartermass fame) and are named after the Robert Cray song. Wednesday 12th, make sure to get to Ann Arbor for Brian Wilson @ the Michigan Theatre, who is touring in support of his new album, “That Lucky Old Sun” which is almost as good as “Smile”. Brian is perhaps the greatest songwriter in rock-N-roll and if you get the chance you should try and see him perform. Brian will also be at the Downtown Ann Arbor bookstore at 12:30PM for a signing of his new album. On Thursday 13th, the rockabilly inspired Blasters will perform at the Magic Bag. The Goth rock band Sisters Of Mercy will perform at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on the 15th (you can win tickets by tuning into Wild At Heart on Thursday morning on 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org). On the 16th, young rock fans have the option of Cute Is What We Aim For @ Clutch Cargos or All American Rejects @ St Andrews.

Have a great week and talk to you guys next Monday.

FREE MP3: Alice Gold "Got the Hunger?"

Alice Russell

Pot of Gold

Alice has developed a burgeoning career as one of the hottest UK soul singers today. While comparisons have been made to other popular British vocalists like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele, one listen and look at Alice and you can immediately tell she's in a class by herself. She has recorded and performed in well respected company that includes Massive Attack, The Roots, Lonnie Liston Smith, Femi Kuti, De La Soul, Quantic, and The Quantic Soul Orchestra to name a few. And her recent collaboration with Ninja Tune's Mr. Scruff on “Music Takes Me Up” is a standout track from his new album Ninja Tuna and was released to rave reviews.

Blessed with a lavishly soulful voice, Alice manages to sound both timeless and modern. Her live performances have the unique ability to captivate an audience and to hold their attention expertly tugging at the heartstrings. Alice has used her talent to great effect, gaining renown for her performances with the mighty Quantic Soul Orchestra and more recently her own band. She has also supported Lonnie Liston Smith, Femi Kuti and De La Soul.

As for her own material, she's been distilling her sound, laying live strings, horns and piano to compliment very intimate and uplifting shift in her style for her new album, Pot Of Gold.

4th Annual Arab Film Festival - AANM - November 14th-16th 2008

Cribs: Arab American Style//Dir: Mike Eshaq//2008/USA

YOUSSEF CHAHINE TRIBUTE TOPS THE BILL AT
THE ARAB AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM’S
2008 ARAB FILM FESTIVAL

Lineup Includes Jordan’s first-ever Academy Award submission;

Director appearances, Kunafa Night let viewers delve deeper into films

The legendary Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine will be remembered with a special program at the 2008 Arab Film Festival November 14-16, 2008. It’s the fourth annual film festival presented by the Arab American National Museum, 13624 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, Michigan.

Chahine, who died last summer at age 82, left behind a monumental body of work beloved by Arab World moviegoers but unfamiliar to most other audiences, despite international critical acclaim.

The 2008 Arab Film Festival proudly presents two Chahine classics – from 1958 and starring Chahine himself, The Cairo Station, winner of the Golden Bear Award at the ’58 Berlin International Film Festival; and The Destiny, from 1997, a Palme d’Or nominee at the Cannes Film Festival (Package D, noon & 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16).

Captain Abu Raed (Package C, 8:50 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14) is the first film ever submitted by the kingdom of Jordan in response to an invitation from the Academy Awards for its Best Foreign Language Film category. This 2008 film took the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and just won the $100,000 grand prize for best dramatic feature at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. Its director, Amin Matalqa, received Variety's Middle East filmmaker of the year award during Abu Dhabi's Middle East International Film Festival.

Slingshot Hip Hop (Package A, 7:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14) braids together the story of young Palestinians living in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank as they discover hip hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. Featured artists include DAM (who played a red-hot show at a recent AANM Global Thursdays performance), PR (Palestinian Rapperz), Abeer and Mahmoud Shalabi. This film was an official selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. New York-based director/producer/editor Jackie Salloum leads a post-film discussion.

Following Slingshot Hip Hop at 9:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, festival goers are invited to continue their exploration of issues raised by festival films during Kunafa Night. For just $5, movie lovers can enjoy conversation along with freshly brewed coffee and from Masri Sweets in Dearborn, fresh kunafa – a tasty cheese pastry topped with a flaky crust and an infused syrup.

Each of the festival’s five film packages includes a short subject and a feature-length film (except Package D, which includes two Chahine features); tickets for individual packages are $6 for Museum Members and $7 all others. A Weekend Festival Pass is available for $25 for Museum Members; for $35, non-members get the weekend pass plus a one-year individual Membership to the AANM. Tickets for Kunafa Night are $5.

Festival goers are encouraged to purchase advance tickets and Weekend Festival Passes – available online ONLY at www.arabamericanmuseum.org – to ensure seating. No advance tickets or passes are available for sale by phone or in person. Tickets and Weekend Festival Passes will be for sale at the door during the festival.

All screenings take place in the 156-seat Auditorium on the Museum’s Lower Level. The festival schedule is subject to change. Call 313.624.0215 or click HERE for further information.

The 2008 Arab Film Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors – the National Endowment for the Arts, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, The Arab American News, Metro Times, the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts and WDET-FM 101.9.
