The annual artist open house happened at the Pioneer Building last Saturday. It's the building on the south side of Grand Blvd. just east of the I-75 overpass. The building is well over 100 years old. At one time it was the sole production facility of those Earth orbiting the Sun models. At other times automotive body panels and interior finishing were made here. Somewhere in its past the building was used by the Pioneer Furniture company.
For the last 15 years the building has been devoted entirely to artists' studios.
All the studios are occupied, and they don't stay vacant for very long. Overall the building doesn't seem as cavernous as the Russell.
For the open house, even the old freight elevator, which still works, was being used for making art.
