JANUARY 11 & 12 AT THE DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Detroit Historical Society continues its monthly film series with “Art in the Stations: Detroit People Mover,” showing Saturday and Sunday, January 11 & 12 at 1 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum. Presented in conjunction with the final weekend of the Made by Hand: Detroit’s Ceramic Legacy featuring 110 years of Pewabic Pottery, each screening is free to the public.

In this film, we meet internationally acclaimed artists and watch the planning, execution, and installation of 15 major public works of art in the 13 stations of the People Mover, which connects office buildings and key areas in downtown Detroit.

“Art in the Stations” has been honored with numerous awards, including the CINE Golden Eagle, Columbus International Film Festival Bronze, American Film & Video Festival and an Emmy Award. Running time for this film is 30 minutes.

The 13 People Mover stations feature more than $2 million in mixed media that you can photograph, touch and experience:

DJ Assault 

Born Craig De Sean Adams and raised in Detroit, Craig came to dance music like many of his Motown brethren, via the radio. Detroit radio jocks made lasting impressions on the young artist. Mixing records since 1982, Craig has been indoctrinating people with his own take on Detroit dance music, which is very much an amalgam of his radio predecessors. The introduction of scratching and rapping to non-Hip Hop genres of music, this style is something that could only have come from Detroit. Along the way, DJ Assault was born. DJ ASSAULT A.K.A. CRAIG DIAMONDS ‘The STREET NARRATOR’ is hard at work with his label and a place to finally call home ‘JEFFERSON AVE’. Making his mark as a well established international DJ since 1997. Assault continues to globe trot yearly all around the US and to over 22 European countries. The United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, and Japan are also among countries that have felt the bass. DJ Assault is also the man behind a whole new set of beats — the man responsible for some of the most infectious hooks this side of the Mississippi. However, Producing records since 1995 Assault has been making some of the most talked about booty-bass accelerated funk, and hip-hop tracks in existence. Songs like ‘Bounce’ which appeared in the 2003 oscar nominated film ’13′. ‘Ass N Titties’ which was used in a April 2004 episode of the Dave Chappelle Show on Comedy Central, ‘Shake It, Work It’ aired in a HP (Hewlett Packer) ipod commercial during the August 2004 VMA’s (Video Music Awards) on MTV and continues to play on national television. ‘Bounce’ also appears in the 2006 film entitled “It’s a boy girl thing” Other credits included music production for various MTV shows such as ‘Road Rules’ and ‘The Gauntlet’. DJ GODFATHER 

DJ Godfather is considered one of the founding fathers of the genre we now know as Ghetto Tech. He started DJing at the age of 15 with the help of, now business partner, DJ Dick. Within a few months of getting his turntables, Godfather was already playing in nightclubs and after hour parties all over Detroit. He started producing at the age of 17 for his first Miami Bass style group Bass Association. With the buzz of a few singles off the Bass Association album on 3 Detroit radio stations, Godfather made his first solo record at the age of 18 on the now Twilight 76 Records entitled "Work Dat". Taking his turntablism skills and mixing Detroit Techno music with Miami Bass music, and new sound was born, Ghetto Tech. With the formation of their new record label Twilight 76 with partners DJ Dick and Brian Gillespie, he took his talent and turned it into an entire business creating 3 other labels known as Databass Records, D.E.T. Only (An exclusive label with only 1000 copies of each release), and Juke Trax (A label dedicated to the Chicago style of Ghetto House and Juke music). With all 4 record labels combined, Godfather and his partners released over 250 vinyl releases and mix CD releases, selling over 800,000 units worldwide. You can hear DJ Godfather tracks on the 2 videos games, NBA 2K6 and NBA 2K7 on 2K Sports. He was also the first DJ to be released on the Serato digital download series, using Scratch Live technology and tracks only available digitally for a mix cd entitled "For The Freaks". With 12" vinyl record sales slowing down over the past years, Godfather and his partners stopped pressing vinyl and embraced the digital download world with their own digital distribution company and 2 online MP3 stores, Secretremixes.com for Mashups and DJ Remixes along with Electrobounce.com for Trap, Ghetto Tech, Electro, Techno and Juke music. 1/10 - Elijah's, Hamtramck, MI - Jack of Heart w/ Growwing Pains, Frustrations, Fake Surfers

French psychedelic garage band JACK OF HEART are on their 2nd US & Canadian tour with a new 7" from PROFET Records.

A handful of 45 rpm on foreign labels, among them the prestigious American label ROB’S House (the original Black Lips label), and extended tours to the four corners of the earth, have already established Jack of Heart from Perpignan as one of the benchmark groups of the rock and roll ghetto. With this first album, Jack of Heart plans to widen its audience – the group already shows a maturity of composition that is quite novel on the French Rock and roll scene.

Of course, Jack of Heart lays claim to the psychedelism of Syd Barret’s Pink Floyd, the legacy of Velvet and the songwriting of Lee Hazlewood, but the group goes beyond these to produce a very individual Rock’n roll, annhilating the rules of garage folklore which is often too regressive and backward-looking. Although the group beats out hallucinatory psychedelic ballads in twisted and vicious garage-punk pieces they never sink into cliché.

Carried along the velvet highway of the charismatic Piero Ilov (Patrick Dewaere’s double – the same mug, the same silhouette, the same strange look), Jack of Heart is also good value for its explosive live, broken in on the back of Black Lips, Magnetix, King Khan and the Shrines, and BBQ.

The UK’s Five-Headed, “Savage Hearted” Jim Jones Revue, a Show Not to Miss

The goal of “Rockhounding” is attempting to find GREAT music.  For all of us that love to go to a rock show and have a great time with a band that really knows how to hit it, read on.

The Jim Jones Revue have announced their first US tour in two years.  Their third studio album, The Savage Heart, was produced by Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman / Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), mixed by Jim Abiss (Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, The Heavy). The Savage Heart is a continuation and evolution of the bands straight forward, high impact, rock and roll style.  Some differences are attributed to the addition of Henri Herbert on keys and the final sound is impacted having Jim Abiss (Arctic Monkeys) mixing it down.

MCB had the pleasure of sitting down with Jim Jones, who was able to share his thoughts on the bands direction, the latest album and what he hopes to bring to the stages he plays. 

MCB  -  Your playing  the Pike Room at the Crofoot on January 14th.  To give Detroiters an idea what they can expect can you tell us a little bit about your live show?

JJ  -  “It's going to be loud, make no bones about that. It may seem like it goes by fast even if it lasts a few hours. I would like to encourage people to not get hung up on watching and to have a bit of a boogie!”  A new audience tends to take it all in, which is cool, but it’s a lot more fun when you let go and just dance a little bit.”
When your at a good show with good music it just kind of mainlines and goes straight to your center.  You just feel it. This is what I hope for when I go to a show and this is what we try to give as a band.

MCB - Tell us about your lineup for the show and the direction you see the music taking on the road recently.  (Does it evolve on the road and how has it evolved)

JJ - What we're doing as a band on stage is getting through to an audience, to break through the barrier and make that connection.  If you make enough noise, you will bring the demolition that gets through that wall. Once it’s broken down a rich stream of feelings and emotion.  We're here to do a job and to entertain people but it's not a one-way thing to make it work right.  It's not like TV, it’s a live presence on the playing and listening side and the interaction of this that can really bring it to life. 
We're in the room together so our job is to try to reach out and make it happen.  It takes people a few songs usually, but they figure out we're uplifting and that we're not destructive nihilist, that they are safe.  It's like gospel, we're here to raise the energy in the room.

MCB - Does it evolve on the road and how has it evolved

JJ – Yea, totally.  Often you have great discoveries that come from a mistake or from an inspired moment.  There is a certain amount of evolution that happens on the road, every town is different and every audience is different.  It comes back once again to being open to it so you can actually do something with it.

MCB - In a time period in the US where music has become focused on what we see and not as much on what we hear, you seem to have stayed grounded and keep your sights set on playing a style of music instead of wearing it. Is this something you’re aware of and have you stayed away from it intentionally?

JJ – Yes and I think its important to do that.  You can get bogged down into the style of something and precisely the things that don’t really matter.  It's not to say there's not so much cool stuff out there, but more to say it's important to have your priorities right.  It just boils down to doing your best to avoid the pantomime, putting on another’s clothes and miming their actions.  There are bands that may be inspired by the initial blast, but they take it somewhere else, like The Sonics.  When you're young it's harder to find your own voice, so these trends can be a good place to start from and use them as a place to find spring board into your own thing that’s meaningful.

MCB - Which musicians did you admire or idolize growing up and what was it about them that captured your interest? 

JJ – Definitely the Detroit scene.  The Stooges, The MC5, I have a soft spot for Grand Funk Rail Road, the double live album they released has some of the same moments of glory we hear in any of the truly great stuff out there.  Mostly the people that seemed to set the bar like Jimmi Hendrix, “they embrace the muscular power of the music without the ridiculous macho posturing where they can straddle both sides of the fence having relevance and having credibility.”  
These bands became gateways for me into the bands that influenced them and all the music around those scenes.  My true musical deflowering, for lack of a better word, was listening to my fathers 45’s of Little Richard and Elvis around the age of 5 or 6 years old.  The rich lineage of music eventually shows up and you can hear it in the songs and follow it like a bread crumb trail straight back to its source.
What this music all has in common again is that connection we initially talked about, where the music breaks through that barrier.  Sometimes you can just put on a song and it takes you to another place, it transports you, and that is what’s so great about it. 

MCB – The Jim Jones Revue are straight up rockers at heart that bring a lot of roots element into it, but the music is always truly their own.  For a one of a kind experience, this group gets the highest recommendation this simple Rockhouder can offer. Enjoy!

I think anticipation for the upcoming storm and a staggered holiday work schedule threw me off so I am posting this one day later than normal. Luckily I had no concerts to recommend for today but still, sorry about the delay. I can't believe we had sub zero temperatures today and tomorrow is just a little bit better. I almost spun my car on some black ice this evening so be careful driving out there. It is sometimes the areas you don't expect that can cause you the biggest problems.

I was spending some time online and caught a few big name passings for the new year. First, for you true film buffs, "Something Weird" film company founder Mike Vraney passed away at the age of 56. Something Weird is known for bring to the masses an interesting collection of burlesque, striptease, drug education shorts, stag shows, science fiction, jungle films and just a ton of rarities. I found some great films that you usually just hear about in whispers. The packages are great because you would get one or two films and a whole bunch of extras like educational loops and mini-films that related to the film. Check out films like "Double Agent 73", "The Gore Gore Girls", "The Acid Eaters", "First Spaceship On Venus" and many other unknown classics. I know Thomas Video had a huge collection of these films which a rented a whole bunch over the years.

Two singers from the early years include Jay Traynor, lead singer on "She Cried" by Jay and the Americans and Phil Everly, of the Everly Brothers which was one of the most unique and influencial bands of the 60's. Lastly, Sir Run Run Shaw of legendary Shaw Brothers fame. He was influencial in the development of kung fu films not only in Asian (he nurtured talents like actor Chow Yun-Fat and director John Woo) but worldwide. He was a producer of one of my favorite films in "Blade Runner" but cannot for great films like Shaw Brothers films like "Five Deadly Venoms" and "One-Armed Swordsman". I hate bringing in the new year on a down note but I hate to see these guys get lost with all those end of year lists coming out.

In honor of Phil's passing, here is a song from a new album dedicated to the Everly Brothers as sung by Norah Jones and Billie Armstrong of "Green Day". This album came in under the radar and despite what might sound like an odd pairing, this is one of the coolest tribute albums I have ever heard. These two polar opposite musical greats pulled together a wonderful album that you need to check out. And I though the Edie Brickell/Steve Martin album was the most unique pairing until I heard this on Canadian airwaves.

Although the group beats out hallucinatory psychedelic ballads in twisted and vicious garage-punk pieces they never sink into cliché.

Carried along the velvet highway of the charismatic Piero Ilov (Patrick Dewaere’s double – the same mug, the same silhouette, the same strange look), Jack of Heart is also good value for its explosive live, broken in on the back of Black Lips, Magnetix, King Khan and the Shrines, and BBQ.

WDET Sunday Sessions Broadcast Event and Dance Party on Jan 12 (This Sunday!)

Finally... a party for all the FREQs out there!  This Sunday night, CASH4GOLD features a TRANSMISSION FREQ mix on WDET's The Sunday Sessions (right after the Progressive Underground show).  An hour collection of electronic favorites, old school influences and what I'm listening to... to celebrate we will be throwing a party in Detroit at 

The Works.  

DJs in the front and back of the house all night long with a break in the front room from 

11-midnight to stream the WDET broadcast.  

A handful of friends will be there to help throw this party.  Some of my favorite local music selectors and sound curators will be mixing.  Crossing genres, making you dance, and keeping up the most positive vibes... we'll keep you sweating on a Sunday night! The door proceeds are being donated to WDET because there's nothing that feels better after a great party than giving back!

This Friday Fusion Shows 6th BDay w/Front Bottoms, Kevin Devine, City Lights and more

It was last Spring at the Why? show when two girls told me the band I need to check out is Front Bottoms who write "the best songs ever." I chalk it up to naive youthful enthusiasm and tuck Front Bottoms to the back of my mind to look into someday. Time passes, I think I may have read a little on FB, enough to make ill-formed comparisons to Black Keys, a band I don't like. Months go by and a good friend of mine slips Front Bottoms name in an email so I decide to do them real justice. Listening to their latest "Talon of the Hawk." with songs that are immediately relatable and encouragingly easy to sing along with, I discover Front Bottoms are an amazing band that really do write the best songs ever.

This Friday, I get to experience Front Bottoms live as they are part of e Fusion's 6th birthday of bringing great shows to our area. Front Bottoms are playing  the Crofoot with a slew of other great bands. City Lights with their indie electronic pop will be there along with pop punk star, Kevin Devine.  Other bands include You Blew it, The Wild, Shapes and Colors and many more. Interview: Mike Leslie Band with Mike Leslie and Michael Parrott

Detroit’s power rock/pop trio Mike Leslie Band will be playing a release show for their debut self titled LP on Friday, January 17 at The Magic Bag in Ferndale, Michigan. They will be joined by Seven Birds One Stone, Chris Degnore and the Black Drops, and emcee Sean Morrison. Mike Leslie Band’s classic Detroit musical style structure and gritty now-generation songwriting has proudly crashed to the forefront of Detroit’s music scene in 2013, leaving a smart, fiery, hook-heavy rock love mark in the wake of the band’s freshman year. Launched in December 2012, Mike Leslie Band took home two 2013 Detroit Music Awards including the coveted People’s Choice Award. This summer saw Mike Leslie Band win the regional crown in DOUG FM’s battle of the bands, heralding their national radio introduction. Mike Leslie Band’s 2013 Thanksgiving Eve show in premiere of the single ”Weather Vane” played to an at-capacity crowd at the historic Magic Bag Theatre and the band shows no signs of slowing down. This band opened for Three Dog Night, Sponge, and Jimmie Vaughn in their first summer and can’t wait to lend their stylistic voodoo to more audiences begging to get amped up for a party.

The Mike Leslie Band have been described as the prescriptive result of a peek inside the soul; melodies and harmonies structured with a dash of this and that to mend your heart, with lyrics that get inside your head and let you see yourself from MLB’s perspective. With blues rock jam influences from Government Mule to Stevie Ray Vaughan to Umphrey’s McGee, a splash of velvety blues-soul from Sam Cooke through Gary Clark Jr., the classic bones of John Lennon and Hendrix, and the pop -folk polish of Alabama Shakes, Band of Horses, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Over the detailed patchwork brand of rock music to remedy the soul is frontman Mike Leslie’s writing inspiration from classic 20th century American novelists and philosophers. Mike Leslie Band deliver an intelligent and intensely personal debut album. They will be touring in support of “Mike Leslie Band” in the late Winter and early Spring of 2014.
