Spin Magazine calls Silverghost, “lo-fi, buzzy dance rock sound is equal parts cool and crazed”

Evelyn Glennie is many things; intriguing, innovative, extraordinary and deaf. As Beethoven would put his ear to the piano to feel the vibrations, she plays barefoot to feel them. Join us as the gifted soloist Evelyn Glennie transcends sound. Then tune into the two piece Silverghost featuring Marcie Bolen (Von Bondies). They create a blended mix with female/male vocals, fuzz guitar, analog synths and a drum machine. They are signed to Detroit’s Italy Records (White Stripes, Hentchmen) and produced by Warn Defevor (His Name Is Alive.) You must purchase tickets through the 37/11 program to attend the party. "HERE'S MY ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS.... "

MCB: You have three days here in the Detroit area. Any plans? Anything that you know or love about the Motor City that you can share?

ATTELL: As for plans...I guess that depends on the weather its fucking cold in NYC so I can only Imagine the temperature in D-Town. I do want to ride the monorail that goes down town...Does that make me gay??????
MCB: The Gong Show ran for only 8 episodes...Can you tell us what happened to derail its revival?

ATTELL: Actually we did 6 episodes but it felt like 8...I have not heard anything from Comedy Central but I dont think its coming back...I guess we will have to settle for the show "America's Got Talent"

MCB: What was one of the most memorable moments from your experiences doing Insomniac, running around town for drinks and debauchery?
ATTELL: There were alot of cool times on that show, its all a blur thanks to my friend yaeger...But I guess the Penis Parade in Japan was a real trip...Seeing a whole town walk around with a giant Penis was pretty wild...And erotic.

MCB: You've traveled extensively throughout the country. What was THEE best place to get drunk?
ATTELL: I get this question alot..I always say..Vegas is the best drinking town, cause they have no last call, but any place where you dont have to drink and drive will do..

Detroit Derby Girls: Bout 10

On May 5th, it was the Detroit Pistoffs versus Grand Prix Madonnas in Bout 10 of the 2011-12 season

This was the last bout of the regular season, and the anticipation was high. The Pistoffs only lost one bout this season, and they only lost it by one point. The Grand Prix Madonnas were undefeated, and this was only their second season in the league. These two teams already had a place in the championship game clinched, so this was a preview of things to come. (Post-script edit: The Pistoffs did not have a place in the championship bout clinched. If they had lost this bout by more than 37 points, the D-Funk Allstars would have been slated to play the Grand Prix Madonnas in the upcoming championship bout.)

The 1st jam of the bout, and Combat Cat of the Pistoffs scored 4. The Grand Prix Madonna's walls have been solid and effective all through the season, but they were broken apart by the Pistoff's offensive blocking in the 2nd jam, as Cookie Rumble scored another 4 for the Pistoffs.

The Grand Prix Madonnas didn't put any points on the board until the 5th jam, when Anomaly scored 5. The Madonnas took the lead in 8th jam when they made the first big play of the bout. Rocky Brawlboa gave them 10 unanswered points, putting the score at 15-12.. The Pistoffs would take the lead back in the 11th jam when their captain Kraken Whips scored 9.

In the Madonna's last bout, Racer McChaser scored 90 out of their 135 points. The question among the fans was whether or not the Pistoffs could stop her. Racer is steady on her skates, so she rarely gets knocked down, but Cookie Rumble was able to do that in the 15th jam. Racer was still able to score 9 unanswered points, giving her team the lead again, with a 32-28 score. Cookie Rumble then gave her team 9 unanswered points in the next jam, causing another lead change. The first half would end with the Pistoffs still ahead, 51-40.

Jams 8 through 11 of the second half, the Pistoffs shutout the Madonnas. Over the course of those 4 jams, the Pistoffs were only able to add 12 themselves. Even when the Madonnas' offense was misfiring, their defense could still be effective.

The shutout ended in the 12th jam with an amusing game of musical chairs in the penalty box. It started with jammer Rock Brawlboa of the Madonnas already in the box, still serving out the rest of her full minute that carried over from the last jam (that position can't be changed between jams as it normally would be if the jammer is in the penalty box when a jam ends). Cookie Rumble was jamming for the Pistoffs and was sent to the box quickly for committing a major penalty. In this situation, the jammer already in the box (Rocky) gets to come out immediately, and the jammer now going into the box (Cookie) only has to serve the amount of time that the first jammer has served. Rocky earned herself lead jammer status and scored 4 points for her team before committing another major penalty and going to the box, thereby letting Cookie back out. Cookie was able to score 10 for her team in between all that shuffling, keeping her team ahead 93-66. The penalty box time-keeper never had to work so hard before. The 13th jam again started with Rocky Brawlboa in the box as a jammer, and she got out long enough to score 3 points before being sent back, as Combat Cat scored 5 for the Pistoffs.

Another shut-out was inflicted on the Madonnas in jams 14 through 16. In that time, the Pistoffs scored 8, keeping them in the lead at 106-69. The shut-out ended when Lily I. Monster scored 3 for the Madonnas and called off the jam before Cookie Rumble could score.

The bout ended with a Pistoff victory, 114-76. Elle McFearsome was named MVP of the game for consistent defensive play.

It was discovered after the bout was over that there was a scoring error early in the second half. The scoreboard was readjusted sometime during or just after the fourth jam, with 11 points being deducted from the Pistoffs. Later it was found that the scoreboard operator had been correct all along before they were instructed to readjust, and that refs and stat takers made the miscalculation. The score was readjusted again several minutes after the end of the bout, and the Pistoffs got the 11 points back. It didn't change the outcome of the bout, but the perception of the early second half was changed immensely. What looked to be four lead changes between the 4th and 8th jams never really happened, so the Pistoffs had really been leading all through-out the second half. (All scores reported here through the second half are with those contested 11 points in place) (Also, this discovery may have been expedited by the nosey questioning of a local blogger who will remain anonymous)

Now to answer the question about whether the Pistoffs could stop Racer McChaser. Looking back at the numbers, Racer jammed a total of 10 times this bout. She was held scoreless by the Pistoffs 6 of those times. In 4 out of those 6, Racer was going up against Cookie Rumble. Did Cookie Rumble end up being the Racer Eradicator? Will Cookie be called on to do this again in the championship bout? Will the Grand Prix Madonnas now have to plan on how to keep Cookie out of Racer's way?

A few thoughts from Captain Spanish Ass'assin and Co-captain Mean Josie Green:
Detroit Area Dork: How are you feeling about this bout?:
Spanish Ass'assin: I'm feeling really good. All of our girls are playing really well. We had some  step it up, really shock the hell out of us. Now we're going to watch boot footage,  figure out where we need to improve in preperation of the championship bout.
Mean Josie Green: I would agree. I think both teams came into this with a lot at stake, so there  was a lot of feeling each other out, because we figured we'd be playing each other  in the next round too. So I expect the championship to be more of the same, but  probably more intense, with more lead changes and things like that. I think all of  our girls feel really good about what they accomplished. I think we played really  well as a team.
Detroit Area Dork: Through-out the season your walls have been pretty dominant. They weren't as tight this game, how did the Pistoffs break them up?
Spanish Ass'assin: The Pistoffs definitely have an amazing offensive game, so it was definitely  harder to combat. I don't know if we really did anything different. I don't know if  we were off, but I think everyone was excited. It seemed like the first half our  walls were really great. It might just be something we gotta work on. Maybe with  the excitement and the scrambling we kind of lost focus on that. That will be  something we definitely have to work on in practice. Try to recreate the chaos and  make sure we keep our walls real tight.
Mean Josie Green: I think you have to credit the Pistoffs. They're a great team. They won the  championship last year. We knew this was going to be a hard bout coming in, and it  was really a close bout the entire time. Truthfully, we really didn't blow-out  teams this year. We've been practicing, we've had a lot of lead changes. This was  more of the type of game we're used to, and less of the game they're used to.  They're used to always holding the lead. With the exception of losing to D-Funk by  one point, they've been pretty dominant this year too. I think we're a pretty good  match-up between the teams, and I think it's going to be a really scrappy  [championship] game.
Detroit Area Dork: In the last bout, Racher McChaser had 90 [out of 135] points. Do you think the  Pistoffs were really focused on stopping her?
Spanish Ass'assin: Absolutely. The stats were sent out, and everybody got to see who the lead  jammers were in the entire league, and Racer is right there on top. Everybody  always looks to stop Racer, and everybody saw that she was leading the league.  They've got really good defense, so I'm sure they were double, triple, and  quadruple-teaming her, and doing everything they could to stop her, because they  know she was on fire this year.
Mean Josie Green: I'm glad Racer is on my team. If I was on an opposing team, she'd be the one to  look out for.
Detroit Area Dork: What did you learn about the Pistoffs today?
Spanish Ass'assin: We learned that we have to work on our multi-tasking. It seems like this year we  had that defense down, we thought we could dominate on the defense and the jammers  could get through on their own. This time you got awesome defense and awesome  offense coming at you, so you can't just focus on one and let the other go. You  gotta have awesome defense and awesome offense, and you gotta switch back and forth  at any given time. It's going to be hard. This championship bout, we've got a lot  of work to do before we go into it.
Mean Josie Green: I think we learned a lot. The Pistoffs are obviously a great defensive team, and  we haven't seen a defensive team quite like the Pistoffs.

Some input from Pistoff Captain Kraken Whips:
Detroit Area Dork: What are your initial thoughts on this bout?
Kraken Whips: I was really nervous going into this bout, because they have some really good  defense, with Racer, Spanish [Assassin], and Mean Josie Green is really good  offensive player. I was pretty nervous, but we kept to our game, we stayed  positive, and I think that's what made us keep working really hard, so it worked  out great.
Detroit Area Dork: What did your team get right tonight?
Kraken Whips: They played as a team, and they trusted each other. There were some stick  moments, but they were able to get it back together real quick.
Detroit Area Dork: In the Grand Prix Madonna's last bout Racer scored 90 points. Did you have a  plan to neutralize her?
Kraken Whips: Oh yeah, it was the whole plan ever since then was "shut down Racer, shut down  Racer". If we get no points, don't let her get any, that was the plan. She did get  some, clearly.
Detroit Area Dork: What did you learn about the Prix Madonnas?
Kraken Whips: They really figured out how to split up our walls, so we need to work on that  more. We need a tougher wall that no one can get through. It has to titanium. So I  think that's going to be what we're working on. We're going to make sure it  continues to get better and better with the walls. That's our thing, walls.
Detroit Area Dork: Through-out most of the season, the Madonna's walls were pretty dominant...
Kraken Whips: We were working on busting up walls. I thought it was just as important to build  walls, as to bust their's up. I think it worked to our advantage. We worked a lot  harder than they brought to it, so I was expecting more of a show from them, but I  think we shut them down pretty good too. We were out Freakin' Rican in this one  too, and she's a big point scorer.

DALLY IN THE ALLEY CELEBRATES 37 YEARS
WITH ANOTHER YEAR OF MUSIC, ART, FOOD
AND FUN IN THE CASS CORRIDOR

Annual Detroit Festival Features Food, Music, Art, and Vendors
 on Saturday, September 6, 2014

Detroit - The Dally in the Alley festival celebrates its 37th anniversary Saturday, September 6, 2014. Held in Detroit’s storied Cass Corridor, the annual event attracts thousands of attendees to the live music, DJs, art, vendors, food, reunions with old friends, and the making new friends, too. The festival-goers, a colorful and diverse cross-section of Detroiters, experience a unique party that has become one of the most-loved festivals in Detroit.

Since it began as an inner city art fair in 1977, the Dally has evolved into a culturally significant affair. In 1982, the fair moved a few blocks to the alley between Forest Avenue & Hancock, Third and Second and evolved into a performing arts festival. While in recent years the celebration has expanded in both size and attendance, the Dally in the Alley remains a one-day festival that is not to be missed. Four music stages, a community stage, kids fair, art installations, more than 150 local food and retail vendors provide attendees with activities and entertainment all day long.

The festival, a fundraiser for the North Cass Community Union, prides itself in staying true to its core mission of celebrating the area that it takes place in. In 2013 in a poll among MetroMix readers, Dally in the Alley was awarded with the honor of “Best Festival in Detroit”. In 2014 the festival was named “Best Summer Festival in Detroit” by Metro Times staff.

Dally Chair Adriel Thornton says “This year’s Dally is expected to be the most well-attended yet. Our team is excited about all of the vendors, the great entertainment and all of the amazing people that come to Dally.”

This year's event features several key elements that make it better than ever, including:

Dally In The Alley Installation Project: Continuing the tradition of showcasing cutting edge art, Dally Art Director Andy Durkas has put together an exciting presentation featuring art installations by local artists, including sculpture artist Thomas Pyrzewski. Pyrzewski will be doing a special live build amidst festivalgoers throughout the day. Installations also include community-curated art and will be in various locations throughout the festival.

More local goods than ever before: We’re excited to announce the growing interest from local businesses to bring a wide variety of goods to showcase at Dally in the Alley. Vendors include: Common Threads Clothing, Human Detroit, Slows BBQ, Jacques Tacos, Respect Detroit apparel, among many others. There will be over 160 vendors will be in attendance in 2014, a new record for the festival.

Ann Kennedy Community Stage & Fashion Show: Dedicated to long-time supporters Ann Kennedy and Dylan Bailey, Dally in the Alley’s fifth stage is an eclectic interactive performance space that pays homage to Dally's community roots. It will feature soapbox forums, performances, contests and other activities. A fashion show is also planned for 7pm at the Ann Kennedy community stage; the show will feature runway models and clothing from local retailers that can be found for sale around the festival. For the first time ever Dally and Pop-Up Yoga Detroit will also be hosting Yoga and Crossfit workouts throughout the afternoon.

Continued Focus on Environmental Impact: The North Cass Community Union is working with Recycle Here to make the Dally in the Alley the greenest festival in Detroit. By requiring all food and drink to be served in compostable wares and staffing volunteers to ensure the right waste gets into the right can, Dally has reduced the amount of garbage by over 60 yards. This year, Dally will bring in over 150 new trash receptacles to be placed inside the alleyway to keep the Corridor Cass clean and kept up.

Poster Artist: Ron Zakrin. This year’s poster art comes from redounded Detroit artist, Ron Zakrin. Ron Zakrin has been an ever-present creative force in Detroit since the mid nineties, when he emerged on to the underground electronic music set with paintings that provided a visual counterpart to the Detroit sound that was taking the world by storm. Zakrin lives in Detroit Michigan, where he was born and works daily.

Dally in the Alley takes place in Detroit's North Cass neighborhood, between Forest and Hancock, Second and Third on Saturday, September 6, 2014 (rain date is Sunday, September 7, 2014). The event runs from 11AM to 11PM.

Please visit www.dallyinthealley.com for map, music lineup and additional information.

Show Review: Antemasque

Last night at the Magic Stick, the newest touring band in rock and roll performed to a hefty crowd. Despite showing up to the venue late (the crowd gathered upstairs before the bands arrived), both Le Butcherettes (support) put on loud and entertaining performances. Antemasque, who consists of members from At the Drive-in and Mars Volta are on tour supporting their debut album.

I apologize for the shitty pictures. Trying to take a picture of my personal crush, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez was especially hard to take a picture of since he does not stand still. Although the pictures are all equally pretty shitty (hey, I'm no photographer), this was the best I could do:

Of course Cedric Bixler-Zavala's distinctive voice, and let's go ahead and admit it, his gorgeous hair is easily recognizable this is not At the Drive-in or Mars Volta. Starting their set at 10:37 in the evening with "Hanging in the Lurch", it was like a bat out of hell. Omar was hungry to have a good time and also for food. He asked for it. The album is good, like a lot better than I expected.  Its controlled chaos may turn of some, but even as I am listening to the album as I write this masterpiece of a review, I appreciate more of what I saw last night.

I felt the same way when I saw Them Crooked Vultures. Going into a show, not knowing if the sounds that you blasted from your computer would present the same emotions or what sort of stage presence to expect.  Case in point came from a certain "dickhead" audience member.  I'm not exactly sure what happened to cause Bixler-Zavala to say, "I dropped out of high school to do this for a fucking living, but I'm not going to sit here and watch a dickhead act like a fucking dickhead", but everyone including myself was a bit shocked since the band erupted into their set on a positive note.

My initial feelings, which I normally stray away from, were that this new band does not perform as if they are a new band, because it is not.  It's a band full of experienced and talented musicians whose rapport works in such a way that their stage show is effortless.

But, not all was rainbows and unicorns. Towards the end of their set the band did something of a "jam". I hate jams.  This is a personal preference. I do not like jams, jam bands, but strawberry jam is the shit. When I made this awful realization, it'd been going on for roughly 3 minutes. At 11:23 I thought it would never end.  It was like that morning diarrhea after a Jack Daniels binge and 4 AM Taco Bell feast. It would not stop.  In fact, it didn't end until 11:33. Although the crowd did not thin out during this mighty jam session, I did feel as though my brain cells did.

Don't get me wrong, this is a group of musicians to see. Whether in Mars Volta, At the Drive-in, or Antemasque, take what you can get, because ultimately listening to them play in any capacity is well worth it.  Take a listen at my favorite track off of their self-titles debut album, "I Got No Remorse".

It would be a sin sin sin not to mention Le Bucherettes. Attending a Le Butcherettes experience is therapeutic to audience members and seemingly to also Teri Gender Bender.  Donning red lipstick and a dress, the set started with "Dress Off" and I fell. The only thing I need to mention about Le Butcherettes, and if there is any doubt about going out of your way to see this band is this: If some old ass rock star says rock is dead, remember that he only needs to take his wrinkly balls off the floor and exit because he obviously hasn't experienced Le Butcherettes.

2010 Motorcity Revue
The 2010 MotorCity Revue is a tribute and farewell to a most unusual place, Michigan Gallery. The thirty-seven artists represented in this show are just a representation of what the gallery was and remains in the memories of thousands who showed work, curated shows, attended openings and special events, joined in life drawing and other sessions, drank cold beer in the bar, played pool, ate homemade soup, performed in bands and other performance venues, traveled to other locations for exchange exhibits, played softball on the Michigan Gallery Grizzlies, contributed to countless fundraisers, donated time and skill to keep the place moderately well maintained, were married there, met to rem ember friends lost, believed in the Gallery--and became part of its fabric.

How did all this all happen in a rundown building on an isolated part of Michigan Avenue one mile west of Tiger Stadium? I'm not completely sure--perhaps because of some perfect circumstances--perhaps just by chance.

The Gallery was an artist run space; this in itself created an energy. We owned the building, so anything could happen. The building was isolated from other commercial places so authorities didn't notice or care what we did. The gallery space was 2,400 square feet, plus the bar had another 1,200 square feet of exhibit and performance space. The basement totaled another 1,800 square feet of space for the Sub Sea Level Gallery. As the Executive Director, I was always willing to take chances. Most importantly, there was the support of the metropolitan Detroit art community. It was a most unusual place--so unusual that some thought of the Gallery as a way of life.

I knew when I agreed to curate another Motorcity Revue that I would not be able to fully reflect Michigan Gallery's vision and history. There were so many who were part of its fabric. So many artists, so many shows, so many people, over its twenty-seven year history. Any review might upset or offend some who should be included. I have spent many months contacting artists and working with Steve Glazer at the Sisson Gallery to develop a quality show that represents the Gallery's history. All of the artists w ho made the Michigan Gallery a phenomenon deserve recognition , and this show is a salute and tribute to them.

Carl Kamulski, Curator, 2010 MotorCity Revue
I remember the October evening quite vividly. It was 1988 and I had just been back in Detroit a month or so. I had read about an artist’s run space, Michigan Gallery. There was to be a reception for the opening of the exhibition, Micropointalism, a style of painting that a couple of Detroiters had developed in which they took the concepts of Seurat to the extreme. I hooked up with a friend, and ventured to the then unknown.

By the end of the evening, I was hooked. I had quickly realized what the Detroit art scene, along with scores of Detroiters, already knew. Michigan Gallery was it. It was not as “sterile” or “clean” as other major exhibition spaces, especially those either connected with educational institutions or those that occupied the ritzier northern ‘burbs. But what Michigan Gallery lacked in comparison to these other spaces, it made up in spirit and with soul.

My own pursuit of a full time college teaching position took me away from Detroit less then a year later, but during the time I was around, I went to every exhibition Michigan Gallery had. In fact, I often journeyed back a second or third time to get a more thorough viewing.

I think Carl Kamulski, the long time executive director of Michigan Gallery will be the first to say that not every exhibition that was mounted in the space was great. But every one I saw during the 1988-89 season was. In fact, I would bet that every exhibition mounted throughout the twenty plus year run of the space was great, because I would bet that each one was filled with the spirit and soul that I encountered the first time I was at Michigan Gallery.

When I returned to Detroit in 2004 to accept a teaching position at Henry Ford Community College, it was, in part, to be part of the metro-Detroit community. Since becoming Director of Exhibitions at the college, I have looked for ways to mount exhibitions that were not only educational for our students, but also connected with the community at large. When I read a suggestion on Stephen Goodfellow’s “Tribes of the Cass Corridor” webpage that someone should think about putting together some kind of tribute to Michigan Gallery, I immediately stepped forth. What better way to focus energies then to combine things that are dear to me: the Sisson Gallery at Henry Ford Community College, the metro-Detroit community, and memories of Michigan Gallery.

Over the past year or so, Carl Kamulski and I have met a few times, exchanged countless emails, brainstormed together as well as separately, and probably cussed each other out a few times in private as we wondered what in the world have we had gotten ourselves into. But we have made it. We have put together what I hope is one of the most exciting exhibitions Michigan Gallery has seen. We present the Motor City Revue 2010!
