So, how was Blowout? I had a blast and was able to see and perform with a lot of great bands. My only compaint this year was The Night Move took fucking forever to get me from place to place. I was able to snag a an annual Blowout Compilation from the Loco Gnosis label. It features 10 local bands and is a mixture of both live and studio recordings. Out of all the shitty Detroit music comps that I have come across, the consistency of the Loco Gnosis comps are great for offering the broadest spectrum of what is the diversified embodiment of "The Detroit Underground Scene." Genres span from electro to surf to desert to psych to slam poetry. For the revue of this awesome CD, I will be delving into it, giving quick thoughts on a track-by-track basis. So without further adieu, here is the rundown on the 2010 Loco Gnosis Blowout XIII Compilation....

Marco Polio And The New Vaccines - Drinking Cursing British Purse Thief
-A great opening song, gets you in the dancing mood. I like the grainy, under-produced sound. It really gets across the Detroit feel even though this is an electro band. This is the first recorded effort I've ever heard from Marco and I must say it's a good translation of their live sound.

Jehovah's Witness Protection Program - Lizards
-A heavily instrumentalized song with very few lyrics. Often spastic transistions and rhythm changes. A hectic, almost metal-sided tune.

Canja Rave - Badango
-A country, old-timey feeling song that is reminscent of hearing a mariachi band singing backed by drums and electric guitars.

The Beggars - 25 Miles
-A great cover of the Edwin Starr classic. The Beggars are one of the very few if the only Detroit Band that is specifically geared for arena-rock. The recording of this track makes you feel like you are front row at The Palace with a packed crowd behind you.

Duende! - Because The Thorn
-This song strays from Duende!'s usual western desert sound. It sounds more like a Detroit-based garage rock tune. This shows that Duende! can step outside their perverbial box and incorporate new genres into their repotoire. Even with this embracement, you can undoubtedly tell that this is a Duende! track.

Devilfish - Double Gus
-Double Gas starts with a really chill guitar based intro before it explodes into an all out surf board bust. Devilfish has really unique way of transitioning from the slow to the fast to the chill to the big finish.

Forget - Three-Eyed Train (excerpt)
-This band has an ever-rovolving cast of musicians. Their sets are usually 1 long jam stretched out over 35-45 minutes. For the first time at Blowout, I saw them make use of vocalists. Their songs are an ambient grind that includes all forms of instrumentations from your classic rock composites to horns, cellos, woodwinds, et al. Really a good tune to chill out, fall asleep to.

Woodman - What The Night Might Bring
-This song is definitely dials up the 60s folk rock scene. Reminds me of the more chilled side of Jefferson Airplane. A good storytelling of lyrics and jam that crescendos with a fuzzbomb at the end.

Duende! - The Lodge
-Ahh there it is, the traditional Duende! western, desert sound. The Lodge evokes feeling of riding my motorcycle through the sands and arriving at Canada from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

The Beggars - FRK
-This time around, an original song from The Beggars. FRK is backed the roar of the crowd and is a good anthem to just cut loose, party, and have a great time.

Jehovah's Witness Protection Program - FreedomSong
-FreedomSong starts out a lot lighter than Lizards. It still contains the same hectic feel between the transitions of the songs construction. If you are unfamiliar with JWPP, these 2 songs are a really great display of their overall sound.

Woodman - Broke A String (improv)
-Even though this song is just an off the cuff made up tune, its great. I was cracking up over the lyrics. Ultimately the punkier side of Woodman, but really funny, quick, and to the point.

The Oscillating Fanclub - My Grave Face
-This song is badass. Psychedlic feel reminiscent of the 70s New York scene. There is also a distinct surf component as well.

Wildcatting - Venezuelan Baby Names
-Wildcatting is on the more experimental side of the spectrum, straying from your typical average song construction. VBN bounces all over the place intro different movements. With how quickly and snappy they changeup, it reminds me of the presentation of Mars Volta's tunes.

John Sinclair And The Pinkeye Orchestra - Bloomdido
-I am very unfamiliar with John Sinclair post MC5. I know he had art shows here and there, a big birthday party last year, and an interview on MCR. I never had the chance to attend any of these. Basically, what Bloomdido is is a great psych band with slam poetry on top of it. Sinclair has a definable drawl to his voice, but I found myself listening more to The Pinkeye Orchestra moreso than anything else.

Wildcatting - Kazooing
-A good little ditty to close out the comp. Fun with kazoos. 1 kazoo holds the basic rhythm while the other solos over top. A quick country-esque ditty.

As you can tell, I really dug the comp. If you would dig it as well, you can download the whole thing for free right here.

KICKASS FREE VINYL FRIDAY: DUENDE! CAVEMAN WOODMAN & BAM BAM MOSS Record Release Party with VERY Special Guest THE BEGGARS - New Dodge Lounge Hamtramck - Sat 5/31/14

DUENDE! CAVEMAN WOODMAN & BAM BAM MOSS Record Release Party
with VERY Special Guest THE BEGGARS

for you chance to win some sweet sweet vinyls

“For All Things Bad, Mezcal. For All Things Good As Well…”

Gangplank Recording artists DUENDE!
announce their highly combustible release: MEZCAL.

MEZCAL was engineered by the master of knobs and sliders David Feeny at Tempermill Studios for Gangplank Records while voracious temperatures forced us indoors last winter. Bellyache Records has collaborated in the production of a collector’s vinyl issue featuring 250 pressed to black and 250 pressed to red. Artwork matches song in the inspired cover by Tato Caraveo and the photo on back is Detroit photographer extraordinaire Brian Rozman’s. Slasher Dave got on board to do the layout.

On the album tracks “One More Time” and “Mezcal” feature Mckinley Jackson on keys. Think ‘The Politicians’ – “Free Your Mind” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5HDJSDYIvQ “Devil Do” was written by Holly GoLightly.

I recently took an advance copy on an extended road trip with me and listened thoroughly several times. I am so impressed by this album. I think this is a huge album for Detroit. Sounds like Jon Spencer and the Dead Milkmen playing with R.L. Burnsides ouija board in The Hentchmen’s basement!

Caveman Woodman and BamBam is “gnarly, swamp stomp, dirt covered, fur wrapped musical evolution.” Lineup is Frank Woodman on fender jag and Brandon (Bam Bam) Moss (Bars of Gold) on drums, playing primitive, fun, train-off-the-tracks rock-n-roll!

The Beggars have a new album being produced by Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers that is set to release in September of this year. They’ll be on hand to get you out of your seats Detroit style in support of these other great acts!

Get your booty shakin ass to this show!!

THE WOGGLES hit Detroit Rock City with their hip-shaking, windshield-steaming garage rock fusillade to present their new album, "The Big Beat," out now on Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records! This will be a true night of music madness to shimmy and shake to the sounds of 60s rock'n'roll with a fist-full of soul, a hip flask of rhythm & blues and a splash of surf.

When the Gories reunited last year Chris Handyside of the MetroTimesnoted the early contact between Dan Kroha and Jon Spencer: "At one of their infrequent out-of-town shows, they supported Memphisruffians the Gibson Brothers, a like-minded crew mining similar sourcematerial with similarly primitive - if more country-tinged - results.
The Gibsons had just added a young Jon Spencer, recently departed from cultlegends Pussy Galore, to their ranks. Spencer - who was blown away by theGories - had some swing with indie labels. He hooked them up withSeattle's Sub Pop. The result was the Gories' sole Sub Pop single, acheeky cover of Spinal Tap's "Gimme Some Money."
Spencer recounted that initial jolt in HEAVY TRASH's THEY WERE KINGS on 2007's GOING WAY WITH HEAVY TRASH: "the Gories were first/out of sight..Mickey and Peg/Danny were cool..Thunderbird baby ESQ.. long before the Fortune building was torndown/they inspired a scene/give 'em the crown..
They Were Kings.." Spencer's post Blues Explosion band HEAVY TRASH
with Matt Verta-Ray hasreset the scales on which Americana is weighed yet again.
Both still wield charismatically the deconstructionist sense of their previous workbut delivered in a soulful blast that reassembles all the angels anddevils of roots music into timeless sonic mythos not much different thanWilliam Burrough's Inter-zone only hipper baby.
Local Psyche-Goth-Rock band DUENDE!
will offer direct support.
DUENDE!recorded their recent album REMNANT OF A REMNANT at Vert-Ray's N.Y.HED studios this past winter. The collective LOCO GNOSIS will pace the nightwith the side-show style interludes by SATORI CIRCUS and Chantal Dixondancing with sword and snake.

So Duende gave their longtime bass player Jason Worden the grandest of sendoffs by releasing a new vinyl LP at Club Bart in Ferndale a few weeks ago. Titled "Way In Is Out", the record features 6 songs ranging from dance to psychedelia to straight ahead garage rock and roll all with a western desert twinge. The title track is the song that made me turn into an insta-fan for Duende the first time I saw them perform live. The lyrics are drawn from an anecdote reminisced by music legend Dale Beavers regarding a mystical card game. The closer, "Boss Radio" is a throwback to a now defunct radio station known for playing local Detroit up and comers the MC5 back in the day. Word has it when Duende was on their recent tour to New Orleans, they played "Boss Radio" and the crowd dug it so much that the band was gifted a bottle of whiskey in exchange for performing the song a second time. This is a great record from one of the best Detroit acts today. I don't believe it's for sale online quite yet, but keep checking the Loco Gnosis label site or you can purchase "Way In Is Out" at Cadieux Cafe June 26th where Duende will be playing with Spitting Nickles and Madame XD. Seriously, buy this record!!!

If you would like something revued by the legendary -jr, feel free to mail hard-copies to 11859 Sycamore, Plymouth, Mi. 48170....and I am partial to vinyl.

DUENDE! - Pike Room Crofoot Pontiac - TONIGHT! Thurs April 2nd

GAROTAS SUECAS with DUENDE! and more!!
at the Pike Room Crofoot Pontiac
THURSDAY APRIL 2n 2009
doors at 8PM
tickets: $10
From the cold wastelands of the 21st century, the GAROTAS SUECAS were born. With their first appearance in Sao Paulo City, Brazil, 2005, Garotas Suecas (Swedish Girls) is formed by Guilherme Saldanha (vocals and harmonica), Irina Bertolucci Chermont (organ), Perdido (bass) and the Paoliello brothers Nico (drums) and Tomaz (guitar). Influenced by the soul and R&B masters of the sixties such as Otis Redding and Sly & the Family Stone, the band cannot deny their garage and psychedelic origins shown by the fuzz guitar sounds and crazy organ riffs,. Burning the dance floors throughout the country with their unique brand of rock, the Garotas Suecas are also true heirs of the unique tropical rock sounds created by the brazilian Tropicalia and Jovem Guarda movements of the sixties and early seventies.
Sharing the bill with Detroit's own DUENDE! who made their cowboy shirted live debut in November of 2006 and have wrote and gigged steadily since originally assembling for a recording session after a fateful Summer Solstice jam when a thunderstorm blacked out the neighborhood.
This show is one you do not want to miss!

Polecat's Big Band (DUENDE! w/Dale Beavers - 11pm)

Burnside and Nathaniel Mayer among others as well as DUENDE!'s own love of Sonic-Americana under the guise of Polecat's Big Band.

This rowdy union of musicians is striking camp and saddling up for a long
weekend banging it out in New York but not before they build a campfire at the Loving Touch in Ferndale on Thursday March 25th with the Electric Lions playing a rare show outside of their house band stint as the Glass Orphans for Detroit's Wonderland and pass the whiskey around with Danny Kroha who will be picking and grinning his own urban tales round midnight.

MCB-VIDEO: PHOTOS: Motorcity Special #1 - Thanks for making our record label launch a HUGE success!

I wanted to thank everyone that attended the Motorcity Special’s Label Launch & Live Recording Concert this past Saturday night at The Music Hall Detroit.
It was a smashing success and a rip roaring good time.
This being the first show we did have a few technical problems in between one of the set changes but with the DJ spinning old school rock n roll it didn’t seem to matter much. With heavy early attendance and a steady stream following the MCS#1 was introduced by MCB’s Amy Palomar who introduced MR SHZ to kick off the night.
MR SHZ played a solid 45 minutes getting everyone into the mood with smooth jams. Surprisingly, the room was full nearly half way into the MR SHZ set and the guys jammed on with an entertaining set list that was a perfect way to open the MCS#1.

As MR SHZ finished up I turned to the bar grabbing a Monumental Blonde beer from the kegs donated by Bastone Brewery in Royal Oak.

It was just what I needed as Canja Rave kicked up the stage pounding out Misfits/White Stripes styled tunes straight from Brazil. Someone asked me why they were on the bill if they were not from Detroit and I responded they were Detroit in their hearts and have been doing everything they could for the past year to move here to the motorcity. That is Detroit and that’s why they are on the MCS#1.
We hit a snag in the sound at this point so while the sound guys were working on it I grabbed a bite to eat from the Jazz Café kitchen. I had setup a decent bar menu with the staff prior to the show including a wide variety of grilled sandwiches, burgers and salads. The ham and cheese I ordered was pretty damn tasty so needless to say the kitchen was busy all night. I must point out the amazing wait staff onsite – comments to me all night about how well they took care of everyone so big thanks to the staff in case I forget later in this writeup.

We had a large selection of merchandise available

and nearly sold out of MCS#1 Vinyl Vouchers.

With MCB’s RebeccaMich, Moneypenny, DC-in-Detroit, Wild Bill, Firefar and BlonDroit workin’ it we sold a lot of t-shirts, posters, stickers, buttons, magnets and we even had a bag of Motorcity Special cookies with our logo from Marty’s Cookies.

Headed up to the green room for a Red Bull (who donated large quantities of product to MCS) and back down to check out Electric Fire Babies……uh wait…they still aren’t playing yet?

It was nearly 30 minutes until EFB got to play so luckily DJ SAVAGE MATT
was spinning and the crowd was getting little anxious just as the problem was solved.
AS usual Electric Fire Babies put on a great set,
breaking a drum skin with a high energy blownout set ending.
DUENDE! was 4th on the bill and really knocked out a stunner set….I have seen this band 20 times and somehow they seem to get better with every show and this set was a screamer…almost mean with a few brand new tunes written in the past weeks from the shortie southern tour they just returned from battling floods and fires and furious friends on the road.
Stanley The Mad Hatter introduced DUENDE!
who came from Ann Arbor with MCB’s Retro Kimmer.
The crowd was whipped up into a frenzy from the DUENDE! and about to explode by time The Wrong Numbers took the stage and they finished off the night with style bangin out soulful tunes that screamed Detroit.
It was a night to remember and hopefully will be considered
a solid way to kick off Motorcity Special.
Our goal is to be profitable enough to cut a vinyl record from each show and I appreciate every person who paid at the door. There is no money going into our pockets on this – it all goes to the record so my apologies to anyone who felt like they should have been on the guest list and wasn’t. I mean even I paid to get into this show…many of the band members even paid cover to help pay for the album pressing. MCS is about community and working together to produce a set of fun/cool events where everyone benefits from the mutual efforts,
The Bands, The Venues, & The Fans

MCB’s Jeremy Whiting, Brett Lawrence and new guy Kevin Soney
shot the show (Kevin Soney shown above with more to follow soon)

We will be mastering the music for the record (thanks to MCB’s Nardo from Navdo Presents) in the coming weeks and will have the vinyl pressed at Archer Records in Detroit. We have reserved a stack that will be available at the next Motorcity Special Record Release Concert on Saturday July 31st 2010 at The Pike Room Crofoot in Pontiac. Lineup will be The Beggars, Black Lodge, Marco Polio & The New Vaccines, WOLFBAIT and The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.

There a small number of pre-order vinyl vouchers still available….
these are not available for online sale at http://www.motorcityspecial.com/ and will only be available by emailing info@motorcityspecial.com
to arrange for purchasing.

This album will be sold out after MCS#2
so get a voucher now or come to the show and buy it early
because they will be pressed in limited quantity
and then will be gone.
Hope to see you at MCS#2

and thanks again for your support!!

Kirk - MCB

Moneypenny's Asst was a little camera happy as well

Last year on Record Store Day, DUENDE! unleashed their monster hit, HEAD (and how to get it), as a 7" single on deep purple and classic black vinyl, stacked, and, backed up with MOTOR-PSYCHO, at the New Way Bar, in Ferndale, to great merriment, and (h)ope, and, f*cking in the streets. Even Charlie Leduff was on hand looking for a microphone stand.

For this years festivities, DUENDE!, will have HEAD, and, their new 7" single for DANCE PARTY b/w KEEP IT COOL available with extra live content with the download. You can pick up both for the low brow price of $10.00

NO COVER. Same as it ever was. 2PM - 6PM.
New Way Bar also has the honor of debuting POOKIE'S TACOS, yes, the same Pookie who plays in the Detroit's Nice Boys of Rock 'n' Roll, the BEGGARS.

DUENDE! did two sets last year, but wanted to Rock 'n' Roll with some pals this time around, so we asked Kommander, and, Dear Darkness to play a set each.

Party Stompers and DUENDE! -- New Way Bar, Ferndale, Saturday, June 18

The Party Stompers and DUENDE!, along with DJ Adam Stanfel, will bring wild, rockin' rhythms to the New Way Bar in Ferndale on Saturday, June 18.

The Party Stompers, a Detroit band that puts their own twist on the gritty Motor City sound of the late 1950s and early '60s, are led by Mike Hurtt (Royal Pendletons, Nathaniel Mayer Band, Michael Hurtt & his Haunted Hearts) on lead vocal and guitar. The band plays an energetic mix of primal early rock 'n' roll, blues, rhythm 'n' blues, rockaballads, jumped-up hillbilly, cajun, swamp pop, and proto-garage.

The Stompers feature legendary Detroit tenor sax man George Katsakis (Royaltones, Jack Scott Band, Del Shannon Band), and also include bassist Adam Stanfel (Wrong Numbers, United Sounds) and drummer S.R. Boland.

DUENDE! has been called "one of today's tightest Detroit bands, wallowing in an uncommon ability to veer off of the beaten path while keeping it together, in near-supernatural fashion."

The roots-based, yet uniquely innovative ensemble is: Jeffery Howitt, whose vocal style has a touch of Tyrannosaurus Rex-era Bolan and post-motorcycle accident Dylan; Laura "the Boom" Willem, drumming like Mo Tucker twisting Charlie Watts' wrist; former Misteriosos guitarist "Jelly Roll" Joel McCune, a finger-picking purveyor of sonic Americana; and multi-instrumentalist Scott Sanford on bass and guitar.

DJ at 9 p.m.; live music shortly after 10 p.m. $6.

MP3 Mondays on MOTORCITYBLOG

With a lyrical penance to Replacements mastermind Paul Westerberg, and a guitar-led scrum that harkens back to the days of the Dolls, this downtown quartet has been packing clubs in New York’s Lower East Side for close to two years now. But you can even ask NYC’s bums, that’s what happens when the music is perfectly sloppy, and dangerously unhinged.

So, as the story goes, on the strength of their self-released, dirty dusty Texas-produced Don’t You Dare EP, and one hell of a live show, the Reckless Sons stopped the Gotham rock scene dead in its tracks, forcing an entire city to take notice of their garage-y nuggets and punch-drunk rock n roll. Next thing you know? London calling, as the Sons embarked on a month-long tour of Britain, which culminated in a main-stage appearance at Brighton’s Beachdown festival. Produced in deep Brooklyn by Ben Rice (The Mooney Suzuki and Change The Station), their latest Everybody Knows EP is scheduled for a May bow. With all that said, Reckless Sons are gearing up for their busiest year yet, which kicks off in style at the old CBGB’s space in Manhattan – what fashionistas likely know as the John Varvatos Store – on March 5th.

Crafting an assault of absurd lyrical undertones, The Bitter Tears started as a country and western band but broadened out into other genres, blending different kinds of pop (country, folk, rock, brass band) while flying by the seat of their pants with whatever direction a song happened to be moving. Scalpone elaborates, “Our major initial influence was Kurt Weill. Weill bastardized many genres, wrote his own orchestral arrangements, and with Bertolt Brecht's lyrics, created a wild combination of darkness, raunchy comedy and acerbic social satire. It’s great ‘cause it’s not some intellectual thing; it comes from the guts. Your liver knows when you've written a good song.”
Taken hold by Alan Scalpone (vocals, guitar, brass, woodwinds), Michael McGinley (vocals, bass, brass, strings), John Leonard (piano) and Greg Norman (vocals, guitar, trombone), The Bitter Tears will release their second album, Jam Tarts in the Jakehouse, through Carrot Top Records on March 3, 2009

In their recent three-and-a-half starred rave, Rolling Stone hailed An Horse's Rearrange Beds as a “killer breakup album,” praising its “fuzzed-out riffs, hummable hooks and snarling beats” for “(recalling) the best of Nineties alt-rock.”
“Their neurotic songs wallop like a small-scale Nirvana,” declared Marie Claire, while Spin commended the “clever and efficient” duo for “(churning) up a poignant fervor.”

An Horse also recently joined forces with Death Cab For Cutie for a series of Australian tour dates after Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard proclaimed “they’d only come to Australia if they could play with An Horse."

Drawing on influences from The Jam, The Clash to their new pals and tour mates Townshend & Daltrey and hailed by critics as "the next big thing", the Brothers Erickson -- Dave (vocals/bass), Kyle (guitar/vocals), and Anders (drums) -- have delivered a highly anticipated, self-titled EP to satiate their rabid and ever-increasing fan base.

Recorded at acclaimed producer Arnold Lanni's studio in Temecula, California the boys took the lessons learned from logging ungodly long trips in their van, criss-crossing the continent on tour, and put them to the test in the studio. The results of their labors are powerful anthems that crackle with bratty energy and recall the swinging riffs, shouted chants, and raw-nerve rock of their favorite bands. Already drawing raves, respected Canadian music mag CHARTattack gave the mini-platter a 4-star review saying: “There are traces of Sweet, Teenage Head and Led Zeppelin along with Keith Moon-like drumming on this catchy-yet-muscular rock record.”

Inward Eye will be touring incessantly in between finishing their debut full-length that is expected to drop later this year. The band will segue from New York City with more raw gigs en route to SXSW, and have already been confirmed for a slew of Warped Tour 2009 dates. Stay tuned…

"Hey you MOTORCITYBLOGgers!" was the shout out we got
from the guys in Coltrane Motion the other day:
"We wanted to give you first crack at some new stuff we're doing, and let you know about the tour we're about to head out on as well - we're not hitting Detroit this time, but if you'll be around and would like a guest list spot on any of those other dates, just let me know..
Anyway, we've got a new single coming out called "The Year Without A Summer", b/w "Maya Blue" - Datawaslost is releasing it as a 7" on colored vinyl,
and 75orLess Records is doing it as a short-run
screenprinted cd with bonus remixes.
That's the basic gist of things - let me know if you want to chat about it, or need any more details, or want a piece of the actual vinyl when it's ready..
Here's some links to post up on MCB
Also get our full-length,
Hope you like it, and thanks for listening!"
