Wild At Heart

Congrats to the Detroit Shock for winning game 3 of the WNBA finals in a game where a 4th quarter 19-2 run put things away for a 76-60 victory. Coach Bill Laimbeer admits that despite having there moments and not getting respect around the league at times, “The most important thing is holding up that trophy at the end of the year”. Bill praised his players and coaching staff in what was a great year, esp mentioning that it was Katie Smith’s series and that Hornbuckle should have made the all-rookie team. When asked if playing and Eastern Michigan was distracting in the series, Bill stated “a lot of fans that have never been a part of this before” and that to spread the wealth throughout Detroit (the Shock have clinched there three championships at the Palace, Joe Louis and EMU). Katie Smith was the finals MVP (coming off her wonderful Olympics years) and said she is just ready to relax. Both Katie and Tweety praised the play by Taj McWilliams-Franklin who had a great series and helped get them in the series.

If this gets posted in time, the Shock will be having a parade downtown today at Campus Martius @ noon.

I got down to the Charles Wright Museum to check out the new exhibit about King Tut where you can view over 100 artifacts of everyone’s favorite Pharaoh. This is the same exhibit that toured in the 60’s and 70’s but it includes about 60 new items that weren’t available at that time. Curator Tony Spearman-Leach says it is an exciting exhibit with a lot of wonderful objects ranging from Tut’s turquoise laded shoes to his personal golden spoon. He says “This is the closest you will get to the artifacts with the exception of going to Egypt”. My favorite item was a chalice which was designed when backlit properly shows a hidden picture in the cup. What stuck me was the brilliance of the objects which are mostly made of gold. I can’t imagine what Howard Carter must have felt when he broke into the tomb and was presented by these exquisite treasures. If you get the chance, you have until January to enjoy this exhibit. You can go to the charleshwrightmuseum.org for more information. The artifacts were found because the inner chamber was down so far that relic hunters who plundered the upper chambers thought they had gotten everything, so thankfully these items were saved for us to view.

I also had the chance to get down to the Jay-Z concert at Cobo this weekend which is part of the Change Rocks platform to support Obama and get people registered to vote.

Today is the deadline for Michigan residents to register so make sure to go online or get somewhere to make this happen. This should be an historic election and whether you vote for Obama or McCain, you need to be registered to be a part of it. At the show, Jay-Z mentions that he doesn’t speak for Obama but will be voting for him and that we should make sure we are ready to vote for change. I talked to a few people and while no one I ran into would admit they were just there for Jay-Z and not for the election, but everyone seemed to have already decided to vote Obama and Jay-Z wouldn’t be converting anyone. I also wonder why there wasn’t an American flag on site which led for a brief embarrassing moment when one of the soldiers led the masses in the pledge of allegiance and was trying to figure out which way to face. Overall, it was a nice event, though a certain white female judge looked a little out of place. The crowds were well behaved and Jay-Z put on a great show.

If you hurry, you can stop by the studios at WXOU and pick up some tickets for the Bruce Springsteen for Obama concert at Eastern Michigan University at 4:30PM today. First come, first serve!

Coming up this week, some events to check out include Alanis Morrissette @ Michigan Theatre (Oct 7th), Ani DiFranco @ Royal Oak Music Theatre (Oct 7th), the new Leonardo da Vinci Exhibit @ Detroit Science Center (started this weekend) and the play “Murder By Poe” @ Meadowbrook Theatre starts this week.
