ARTISTIC MEDIUMS: REVELATIONS OF THE INVISIBLE
with an OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 5 from 6-9pm
"Loud and Clear" is an hour long performance piece where, dressed in a shirt, tie and expensive shoes, Krumrey spins in circles while shouting “Attention!” into a large black megaphone and a clock ticks off the seconds in the background. It is a repetitive action that at once appears totally absurd, but seen also as a metaphor of communication in all its dizzying ceaselessness.

Bar Brady's Friday Drink Recipe's - PANIC IN DETROIT

Panic In Detroit

In carefree times of leisure, nothing speaks to the spirit of celebration like a deliciously blended cocktail shared with friends on the proverbial promenade deck of life.
But lets face it, nothing lasts forever. And when Johnny Law comes knocking - the last supper cut short - there is no time for subtle pleasantries.
You need a stiff drink. Quick!
But no one says you can’t enjoy it.
Here’s one that works:

1. Grab a large glass fast
2. Throw in some ice (time permitted)
3. Pour in one finger of vodka
4. One finger of gin.
5. One finger of run.
6. One finger of tequila.
7. Add sweet and sour mix or lemonade, and a healthy splash of Coke
8. Bottoms up. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Good Night Irende.
9. ..when the man comes ‘round
Notice that's one booze for each finger to be printed at the station if you actually finish that drink....
STEP 10: Get the hell outta there NOW!
and head down to the corner pub in the NEXT TOWN over....

Lunafest - Main Art Theatre - Sun Mar 30th 4pm

LUNAFEST

LUNAFEST was established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, to simultaneously promote women filmmakers, raise awareness for women’s issues, and support worthy women’s nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
LUNAFEST is completely funded by LUNA and run by a small, dedicated group of LUNA employees. 100 percent of all proceeds are donated to charity – 15 percent to the Breast Cancer Fund and the remaining 85 percent of proceeds go directly back to hosting community organizations.
Over the years, as LUNAFEST has grown from a single annual event to more than 100 festivals each season, LUNA’s commitment to this worthwhile program has grown as well. We are continually inspired by the individual and collective efforts of women – and we are awed by the results. To date, LUNAFEST has raised over $250,000 for worthwhile women’s organizations, while raising hope and awareness for the stories of women everywhere.

As I was teeing up on the 5th hole I noticed a new place across the street offering massage therapy....so I walked in and talked to Lisa who runs the place about my needs. She had me up on the table in no time doing her thing - working out those kinks ;)
Now I get rubbed down about once a month and this was one of the better sessions I have had in a long time so Bodyworks Alternatives gets a huge thumbs up from us!

Muruga will help turn this Earth Day festival into something spectacular.
Born Steven Bookvich in Detroit, while playing Woodstock he met Swami Satchidananda who gave him the name Muruga.
He has played and recorded with George Clinton and shared the stage with too many to mention. It was in the early 90’s that Muruga urged Merl Saunders to record "Blues from the Rain Forest." Jerry Garcia came in and played on that Grammy nominated album.
Muruga recorded on the Merl Saunders & The Rainforest Band’s live CD "Save the Planet So We’ll Have Some Place to Boogy".
The Macpodz are an electrified jazz quintet from Ann Arbor, Michigan in the tradition of Miles Davis and Frank Zappa. These guys are on there way to greatness playing festivals across the country, including Wakarusa this year. Here’s your chance to say, "I saw them cats in 2008 at the first annual Earth Fest at the Crofoot".
Some artists defy classification. Detroit’s revolutionary soul man, Nadir, rebels against it. "When you get right down to it," Nadir explains, "I’m all about telling stories, singing songs and making music that moves people - spiritually, emotionally, physically, politically, whatever. Don’t just sit there! Do something!" Not only will he blow your mind with his music, Nadir has somethingto say. Check out his blog!

KINGS
Sunday March 23rd 2008
4pm & 7pm shows
5200 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, Michigan 48202
Entrance in back off John R

(Ireland/UK/2007) Directed by Tom Collins
In the 1970s, six ambitious and energetic young men, some friends, some relatives, leave Ireland for London fired up with hopes of making their fortunes and their futures, and eventually returning home in triumph. Thirty years later, only one does return – in a coffin. As the five others reunite for his wake, they’re forced to face up to the realities of the past three decades; these men have not only not followed the path they originally set for themselves, they also now find themselves still struggling to find a center to their lives, as well as to discover a place to truly call home. Adapted from playwright Jimmy Murphy’s acclaimed The Kings of the Kilburn Road, this first major bilingual Irish production (Irish Gaelic and English) features remarkable performances from its brilliant ensemble cast, including the great Colm Meaney (The Snapper). An immigration story at once deeply personal and hauntingly universal, Kings is one of this year’s most powerful surprises. Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals. Gaelic sequences are subtitled. Bar Brady's Friday Drink Recipes - Cranberry Mimosa

Our friday drink recipe from Bar Brady would usually drop tomorrow but we are out of town for the holiday so are getting it today! - Cheers!

Folks, the Good Friday is upon us.
Here’s a festive one for the holiday morn.

Cranberry Mimosa

3 bottles chilled brutt champagne or sparkling wine (2 is never enough)

Large bottle of cranberry juice
(if straight cranberry juice is too bitter for you, try cran-raspberry)

Whole cranberries or vanilla beans

1. Fill your glasses with one part chilled cranberry juice
2. Add two parts chilled brutt champagne
3. Garnish with a few whole cranberries or a vanilla bean.
4. Float a yellow marshmallow Peep on top.
5. No, on second though, hold off on the Peeps. Just tried it, not good!

Tip: the key to a great mimosa is using good tasty juice. So don’t skimp here.
The fresher the better. If you have doubts, maybe buy a few different types, different sweetness levels. What looks in the bottle may not delight the taste buds when mixed with our bubbly buddy.

Apt4 - Buck Brothers - Lager House - Wed Mar 19th

The޲ Buc޲k Bro޲the޲rs w/Apa޲rtm޲ent޲ 4
Wed޲nes޲day޲, Mar޲ch 19 2008

Lager House
1254 Michigan Ave
Corktown Detroit

Fresh off a tour of "US television" as they so cutely put it on their website, The Buck Brothers are headed this way in a rented Winnebago. Hailing from across the big pond (the Atlantic, that is), the group formed in January 2005 after meeting at a Buddhist disco in suburban London and has made their name across the western (and post-Soviet) world with late '70s-esque tunes. They've shared the stage with such drug-addled names as The Buzzcocks and Babyshambles. Earlier this month, the Buck brothers set a world record for the "highest number of gigs performed in a 12 hour period." Have you ever seen a more Brit-looking trio?

Detroit's own Apartment 4 will knock your socks off with an entirely new genre?"bubble grunge." The only bubble grunge band around with a violinist!

MOTORCITYBLOG's Amy Palomar will be onsite to interview both bands and catch some video footage of the shows....

PAIK - Jeff Karolski play the Marble Lounge Opening - DIA Marble Lounge - Thur Mar 20th 10pm

MOTORCITYBLOG will be onsite this Thursday night for this opening....
Here is the press release from the DIA:
And Now for Something Completely Different …
Detroit Institute of Arts Kicks off Late-Night Thursdays on March 20th 2008

March 3, 2008 (Detroit)—Edgy. Experimental. Thought provoking. Smart. Get ready—the new Detroit Institute of Arts presents the Marble Lounge, a Thursday late-night scene, opening on March 20 from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Performance art, DJs, live music and more are part of the mix—all with a new audience in mind.

“Our 32-hour grand opening stretch proved that the museum has a great deal to offer younger audiences,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “With imaginative, experimental programming and a late night atmosphere, we’re hoping to become a consistent option for an audience that doesn’t always perceive the DIA as the place to be.”

The Marble Lounge will feature a cash bar and food.
Tickets are $10 for guests 18-years old and up, and will be available at the door.

Kicking off the opening Thursday night is performance artist Jeff Karolski, who refers to his work as “half two-dimensional, half performance/sculpture.” Originally attracted to the cassette recorder as a way to preserve elusive memories, he combines his interest in recorded and manufactured sound with performance and interactive processes that often involve his own body. In the manner of scientific experimentation, he applies the sculptural sensibilities from his art academy training with the expanding possibilities of technology. He is best known for integrating everyday objects (fish tanks, electric saws, ice) and electronics to create live site-specific, performance oriented sound sculpture. Karolski has been commissioned to create a piece for the opening of the Marble Lounge.

Live music by Detroit’s own critically acclaimed space rock, sonic stars Paik is also part of the very first late-night Thursday. Their live shows, which All Music Review calls “nearly legendary,” mix surreal sounds with filmscapes, light shows, mirrors and smoke to create something that’s as much lived in as listened to. DJ Ben Blackwell (of Dirtbombs fame) will also be on hand to spin tunes and keep things moving through the night.
Be on the lookout for future news from the Marble Lounge!

"Aboriginal Amplifier" - 555 Gallery - Fri Mar 21st

"Aboriginal Amplifier"
Friday March 21st 2008 - 6-10 PM

Solo Exhibit of New large scale Paintings

555 Gallery
4884 Grand River Ave
Detroit MI

Carl Oxley III spent the month of January, 2008, as an Artist in Residence at 555 Gallery During this time, He completed his largest body of work to date. These new Paintings range insize from 3 feet by 4 feet, to 4 feet by 8 feet.Having been previously confined in his home studio, He was able to take his bold and bright cast of characters to a whole new level.

Carl will also be exhibiting some of most his recentsmaller works, which deal with ancient designs and symbols, and the way that such things become new again.
Oxley has recently been drawing inspiration from Pre-Inca, Southwest American Indian, Northwest American Indian, and Mexican designs and primitive characters, and Asian language characters. He then layers his language of figures and characters into the mix.

It becomes hard to tell what is old, and what is new.

MCB-VIDEO MetroTimes Blownout 2008

MCB gave our guy Jeff Nolan $37 and a video camera to go out and roam the streets at random without a plan during the blownout this year. He came back with 3 hrs of awesome footage that our volunteer video editors crunched down to 14 minutes (that was tough!)

We told him to have a "HAMTRACK" mind about it

Both Blogger and Youtube refused this video due to the size so we didnt want to break in 2 pieces and decided to post it to another video website called BLIP.TV

The music was not the focus of the video but more of the experience...

We spent more time trying to upload this sucker than anything and honestly we are ready to move on from this one folks....so if we interviewed you and your not in the video - SORRY!
There was a lot of material that when crunched down to flash on the web just was to dark or in other instances the sound was terrible...the point is that the piece is fun and a big thanks to Jeff Nolan from The Lollybot Collective for heading out and working for beer all weekend!

Bar Brady's Friday Drink Recipes - Ye Ole Belfast Bomber

Ye Ole Belfast Bomber

St. Paddy’s Day is upon us once again. Spring is in the air (not really, but you know the drill). Time to break out the Guinness! Or the Harp or Bass and cider.
For those of you looking to warm the festivities up with a spot of Irish (whiskey), nothing gets your guests singing Drunken Sailor like a scatter of Paddy Burke’s Belfast Bombers.
Whiskey drinkers or not, just try it. Trust me. They’ll like it.

Bailey’s Irish Cream
Jameson whiskey, or the likes.
Juice glasses (tall & narrow, or 3-4 oz tumbler)
And a spoon.

1) Pour a generous shot of Jameson into your juice glasses.

2) Placing a spoon on the surface of the whiskey, gently pour 3/5’s of an inch or so of Bailey’s onto the surface of the whiskey. The idea is to pour gently into the spoon so the Bailey’s floats in a layer over top of the whiskey (like a black&tan).

3) Serve and shoot!

4) Up the revolution, Lads!! I’m going out the front door with, Gerry.

State of the City Address - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick - Tue March 11th 7pm

We usually don't post this type of information on MCB but a few readers sent some emails about a protest tonight outside City Hall regarding the mayor leaving office so we thought these graphics were kind of funny so here they are for all to see.
Our thoughts are until the mayor has been charged with anything he is innocent until proven guilty so business as usual my friends.
On with the State of the City address tonight - this should be a good one to TIVO for sure!
We have been thinking about a few sneak attack methods for getting interviews with some of the behind the scenes players in this whole thing so stay tuned and we may just suprise ourselves with what we come out with....
Message from a few of our readers:
"MASS PROTEST - At the “State of the City” address TONIGHT!!
Outside of Orchestra Hall the nite of 3/11/08, rally starts at 6:00 pm.
Wear a white t-shirt over your jacket with the words JUST GO! printed on it.
This one’s for real, folks..be there or be apathetic.
Bring friends, bring cameras, bring picket signs, or just bring yourself..
it’s time for the citizens to be heard. "

"The Crofoot is proud to present THE SLITS live in concert at the Eagle Theater. As Mark Perry says: "They (The Slits) were loud brash bold and unrepentant.. they never compromised their image or stance...they must have inspired loads of women to pick up a guitar and form a band....they were pure punk driven by female power...they shocked a lot of people, both on and of stage. They were dangerous, and their very presence threatened those that considered rock to be a male-only pursuit." Flash-forward to 2008 and Slits are back in action, with Ari Up and bassist Tessa and friends continuing to create music in their jungly dubby punk style. With SHELL SHAG and more."

Kentucky Chrome specializes in songs of booze, heartache, hot-rods and the occasional redemption of a lost soul?and we would expect nothing less!

Rockabilly Strangers are a brand new band that has only one mission: rock out the best rockabilly music from the past, present, and future. Dig it!
