ROCK ON THE RANGE 2015: THE SUMMER CONCERT SEASON KICK-OFF

Rotr 2015 Logo

The summer concert season is almost upon us. The BEST way to kick it off is Rock on the Range. The first festival of the season. One of the largest, with 120,000 concert goers in 2014. And most important, one of the rockingest.

RotR 2015 Line Up

Slipknot, Judas Priest, and Linkin Park anchor a stellar line-up. Check the line up after the headliners, most could of and have, headlined their own tours. But RotR excels at finding hidden talent. Bringing new bands to the masses and turning them into new fans. I'm one of them. Last years highlights for me were Crobot and Monster Truck. I can't wait to hear the break-out band for me this year.

Another strong point of RotR is getting older bands back out playing. It gives people a chance to see bands that they didn't get to see in the past. Also, it introduces the older bands to a younger generation. Saxon and Anthrax were done touring by the time I discovered them and became a fan.

Adding to the line up is a strong mix of bands that will appeal to all rockers. Marilyn Manson, Volbeat, and In This Moment are favorites of mine. New to me that I'm looking forward to seeing are We Are Harlot, Apocalyptica, and Scott Weiland& The Wildabouts.

Hanging out in the main stadium and watching the headliners is worth the price of admission, but you're limiting yourself by not venturing out to the side stages. There are many great act to see, many little nuances happening, and to get an idea how big RotR is. You might miss the comedy tent. A change of pace for break, and to lift your spirits.

RotR Comedy

You need to make plans soon. RotR has sold out the last few years. This year will be no exception because they have many ticket options. If you need accommodations, the RotR site is your one stop shop. Hotel and VIP, camping on-site, and even layaway. RotR has made special pricing for the military. Check it out here.

Offworld Arcade

Offworld Arcade is a monthly event that allows people to play unlimited games on old classic arcades for just $5. First held at the old St. Vincent School building on 14th street in Corktown, just two blocks away from Michigan Central Station. The building is being slowly renovated and repurposed, and it's where the old games are normally stored. A place that has DIY vibe without the dust and smell of the Russell Industrial Center.

There a few games that everyone would recognize, like Donkey Kong, Ms. Pacman, Spy Hunter, and Robocop. Most of them however, are only familiar to the avid gamer. They all seem to predate 1990, so you won't find Street Fighter II, or anything with an attached holstered gun.

I first tried it out in December. Good turnout, but not crowded. Everyone was polite and didn't hog a machine. If someone else showed interest, a person that had been playing for a while would relinquish control. (Except maybe for Spy Hunter at times)

Then a lot of press coverage followed. Everyone at once wanted to talk about it. The decision was made to move all those games for one night to Checker Bar & Grill to accommodate the expected turnout in January. The place was packed. The unspoken courtesies were hard to find, and it seemed like it was all about being where everyone else wanted to be. Ruined by its own success?

February's night was at Checker again, but now some of the buzz had worn off. There was room to breathe, and the civility returned.

March's night will be this Saturday. Come out if you're feeling nostalgiac.

Marche du Nain Rouge Parade and Celebration

Sunday, March 22nd
Starting at 1PM
Beginning Location: Traffic Jam & Snug

This is a very fun, unique and cool annual spring celebration in the 'D.

The Marche du Nain Rouge has its roots in Detroit’s early history, when Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Detroit and was confronted by the Nain Rouge (Red Devil). He purportedly hit the Nain Rouge with his cane and became cursed for life. Since then, the Nain Rouge has been spotted throughout Detroit’s 300 year history, usual at / during the D's most notorious occurrences. The Nain Rouge has been a harbinger of doom since the time of Detroit's founder. At this annual fun event - all of us as Detroiters banish the Nain for another year!

“The idea with the Marche was to tap into Detroit's rich history and use the Nain Rouge story as a way for Detroiters to come together in common purpose,” said Francis Grunow, co-creator of the Marche. “Of course it's supposed to be silly and fun, but it's also supposed to be positive and meaningful.”

This mardi-gras carnival-esque festival and parade features many people dressing up in costumes and mardi-gras masks to represent the effigy they want to shed or just to enjoy in the fun of the day.

The 'D: A city and region filled with culture and fun and cool things to do - get up and get out and proclaim and defned the 'D!

Parade/ March:
1:00 pm from the Traffic Jam & Snug - Wayne State Campus. EVERYONE who attends gets to march in the parade to the Masonic Temple when the Nain is banished and an after-celebration takes place within the Masonic itself.

The Endo Show- a benefit for The Endometriosis Foundation of America -Sunday 3/22

A great line up for a great cause. From the Facebook event page: Endometriosis is a chronic, incurable reproductive disease that affects 176 million women worldwide. The true tragedy is that it's often misdiagnosed, misunderstood, or diagnosed too late. Aside from chronic debilitating pain and depression, this disease causes infertility along with a slew of co-existing, usually chronic, conditions. So far, the only known treatments are surgery and hormone therapy, yielding no permanent results.

UPCOMING: Friday, March 20- Glass, Cinder & Thorns III opening reception at Inner State Gallery in Detroit

1xRUN and Inner State Gallery are proud to announce that Glass, Cinder & Thorns III will open to the public on Friday, March 20th at 7pm at Inner State Gallery, located at 1410 Gratiot in Detroit’s Eastern Market.  With a groundbreaking roster comprised entirely of female artists, the fairy-tale inspired group exhibition features over 40 artists from around the world. Since opening at 323East Gallery in 2010, the exhibition has resonated with collectors, fellow artists, the media and fans alike for providing a platform for female artists to explore the age old tradition of fairy tales and create thought provoking works that question the values they intend to instill from a very young age.

For the latest incarnation of Glass, Cinder & Thorns, curator April Armand has assembled her most ambitious group of local and internationally recognized artists to date, pulling some of the best and brightest in contemporary art in a myriad of mediums. In addition to making it’s debut at Inner State Gallery, the show will once again appear on the gallery’s online counterpart 1xRUN.

“This is the largest and most diverse group of artists that we have had for Glass Cinder & Thorns. While there are many returning artists, we've also invited quite a few new artists to participate as well. The work that has been arriving at the gallery has been pretty incredible. I am so impressed by everyone's skill level and their ability to put their own unique spin on this varied theme. This will be an exhibition not to be missed,” Armand said.

In her curator's statement Armand elaborates that we all know these seemingly innocent bedtimes stories often had evil lurking within their pages and issued the challenge to each artist to reinvent their favorites. The end result is that the more adult themes are highlighted in many of the artists’ pieces, with an emphasis on strong female perspectives, as 40+ female artists from around the globe have tackled iconic female-centric fairy tales including Cinderella, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Alice In Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty and countless others, each putting a modern spin on these childhood classics.

“The older we get, the more we realize how wonderful being an innocent child can be, losing ourselves in fantasies of white horses, magic, and dazzling princesses. What Disney failed to mention is that The Little Mermaid dies, multiple suitors defiled Sleeping Beauty, and The Wolf ate Grandma. Horrible things happen everyday, but we all sometimes wish for a time and place where life is simpler, yearning for the warmth of our childhood beds, the calming voice of our parents, and the journey back to that enchanted world,” Armand said challenging some of today’s finest female artists.

Featuring artists from as far away as Australia and New Zealand, Glass Cinder & Thorns is as much an international showcase -- with nearly a dozen additional artists from all over Europe and the Americas -- as well as a local one, featuring six Detroit-based artists.

Artists include:
Amy Earles (Indiana), Audrey Pongracz (Detroit), Bec Winnel (Australia), Bethany Shorb (Detroit), Caitlin Hackett (San Francisco), Camille LaMontagne (Detroit), Celeste Byers (San Diego), Christina Mrozik (Grand Rapids), DeEtta Harris (Detroit), Edith LeBeau (Montreal), Erin Yoshi (San Francisco), Heidi Taillefer (Los Angeles), Hueman (Los Angeles), Indie184 (New York City), Jana Brike (Latvia), Kashink (Paris), Kelly McKernan (Nashville), Kelly Vivanco (Escondido), Kelsey Beckett (Detroit), Klor (Montreal), Kukula (New Haven), Lacey Bryant (San Jose), Lady Diva (New Zealand), Lady Orlando (Mexico City), Liza Corbett (New Jersey), Lucy (Vienna), Mab Graves (Indianapolis), Mary Williams (Detroit), Mimi Yoon (Los Angeles), Miss Van (Barcelona), Rudy Fig (Minneapolis), Sasha Walker (Detroit), Sheri Debow (Napa), Sheryo (Singapore), Sienna Freeman (San Francisco), Stephanie Buer (Portland), Tatiana Suarez (Miami), Taylor White (Raleigh), Vexta (Australia) & Yumiko Kayukawa (Seattle).

This event is free and open to the public!
Opening artist reception will begin at 7pm on March 20th at
Inner State Gallery, located at 1410 Gratiot in Detroit’s Eastern Market.

CALL FOR ART: Small Wonders @ Atomic Cafe

Saturday July 11 2015 – 7pm until midnight
Atomic Cafe
10326 Joseph Campau, Hamtramck, MI

The call deadline is June 13 2015!

On Saturday July 11 2015 at Atomic Cafe in Hamtramck, we will be hosting our 3rd annual exhibition of tiny art called “Small Wonders“.  This exhibition will showcase numerous fine art pieces 5 inches and under from artists local and worldwide.  This year, we are excited to announce the addition of a showcase of tiny films 5 minutes and under to the exhibition!  And once again, we welcome the smooth lounge singer extraordinaire, Konrad Lee, who will be singing a fine selection of tiny songs.  Further details are coming soon, however the call for tiny art and the call for tiny films is now open!

Q: How precise is the “under 5 inches” guideline?
A: We ask that all artists be sure their submission are no larger than 5 inches when submitting. If your piece is accepted and we see that it is obviously larger when brought in, we will review it once again for inclusion. However, we would prefer that artist think much much smaller for this exhibition. The smaller, the better! And please note that the overall measurement does not need to include any strings, wires, ribbons or whatever you use to hang your piece.

Q: Can I submit my ideas and/or sketches for review?
A: If you submit early (before June 1st), we will gladly review your ideas, but they will need to be quite clear and accompanied by sketches.

Q: What is the rest event about?
A: We are still working on the entertainment aspects, but lounge singer extraordinaire, Konrad Lee, will be present to sing a fine selection of tiny songs.  Stay tuned.

DO NOT MISS MCB PICK OF THE WEEK: Helmet celebrates the 20th Anniversary of their seminal album Betty at the Magic Bag on Tuesday, March 17 2015

The Betty 20th Anniversary Tour!

HELMET

Tuesday, March 17 – Doors 8pm - $20

Billed as the "thinking man's metal band," Helmet provided an alternative to the grunge bands of the time with their clean cut aesthetic and raw, unrelenting, propulsive sound. Betty came on the trails of the band's first mainstream success, 1992's Meantime. The cut "Milquetoast" became a music video staple on MTV and the album was critically praised for its genre-defying exploration into jazz, blues and improvisation. As music writer Darrell Bassett wrote upon the album's release, "The thump and grind of Betty fully reflects the seemingly meaningless forces that shape our hi-tech existences, the inner pressure that waxes and wanes as life's pace explodes exponentially and its occasional moments of grace. Betty is a surprising album, one which grows as it unfolds its subtleties." A prophetic statement if ever there was one.

Helmet celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the release of their seminal album Betty by performing the album in its entirety (along with a second set full of hits and rarities) at the Magic Bag on Tuesday, March 17th 2015

313 DAY - Tomorrow! Fri, March 13th

The vision of #313DLove is a Detroit whose self worth is high, unemployment is low and education system is second to none. 313Dlove began on March 13, 2012 with a tweet and the hashtag #313Dlove—a hashtag that went on to trend worldwide as people from around the globe shared their love for the City of Detroit. Since then #313Dlove has continued to trend every year on March 13, the date that matches the city’s famous area code.

313Dlove is a movement aimed toward bringing worldwide positive attention and focus to Detroit and its community. Since the first #313Dlove hashtag was tweeted in 2012, 313Dlove has consistently been an outlet for people to share their stories and love for the City of Detroit year-round online and during a once a year event every March 13th. The vision of #313Dlove is a Detroit whose self-worth is high, unemployment is low and education is second to none. 313Dlove was founded by Terry Bean, Founder of Motor City Connect.

We are busy making that vision a reality for many.

If TEDx is all about "Ideas worth spreading" #313DLove is all about "actions worth emulating". We've gathered a handful of top-shelf people who are busy making a huge impact on our community. They will share their stories, suggest ways others can "Be part of the change" and most importantly what drives them to stay here in the D.

The talks are from 1:00-5:00. We have built in plenty of time so we can get busy tweeting what we love about Detroit at 3:13 with the goal of breaking Twitter.

Plenty of other fun things to do:

Join the "March in March" in the morning at 10:00am.

Take tours of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Hang out for our lovely afterglow in the beautiful rotunda
for drinks, art, music and fun!
(included in ticket price) 5:00- 6:30pm

There are so many wonderful things taking place in Detroit. We would love for you to join in the conversation by searching for and/or using #313DLove on your favorite social media site.
