Leopold and his Fiction brings their cohesive blend of Detroit garage-rock ‘n’ roll, Grass Valley folk and Western darkness to The Lager House on Wednesday, April 7th. Led by Daniel James, a born and bred Detroiter, the band will offer an exclusive unreleased tour single of “Golden Friends” from the upcoming Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Little Joy, Vetiver) produced album at all the shows beginning at SXSW.

Returning to the studio to record their third album, Leopold and his Fiction encountered a number of firsts including the first recording with new line up of Daniel James (Vocals/Guitar), Micayla Grace (Bass Guitar/Vocals) and Jon Sortland (Drums/Vocals/Organ), working with producer Thom Monahan and the studio experience at The Hanger in Sacramento. The 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival -- jointly presented by Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cranbrook Institute of Science -- features the world's best footage on mountain subjects.

In 1977 'Bookies 870' club,the former Frank Gagen's nightclub, was Detroit's first venue to show case the rebellious music known as punk rock. Bob Mulrooney was at the forefront of this movement fueling the rhythm for Coldcock and The Ramrods.
Coldcock's classic "I wanna be rich" found them a whole new generation of fans from the first "Murder By Death" rare 45rpm singles compilations album.
The Ramrods full length LP came out a quarter century later as a time capsule documentation of first generation punk. Bob also did stints in other notable groups of the time such as The Mutants, Cinecyde, The Sillies, Nikki and the Corvettes, and later with Rocket 455.

In the 1980's he transformed himself into the front man singer/songwriter Detroit's own Punk Funk Hot Pants Power advocate, Bootsey X and the Lovemasters. Fashionably sporting a flashy silver sequin sport coat alongside lovely backup singers/dancers the Sugarbabes of Soul. Bootsey authored instant classics such as "Genius from the Waist Down", "Pusherman of Love"," Pony Down" along with holiday season perennial
"(Santa's Got A) Bomb for Whitey".

Bob was backed up musically by international rock greats Ron and Scott Asheton of the Stooges, Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys , and Niagara of Destroy all Monsters/Dark Carnival. He found himself touring and beating the skins for classic Northern Soul, Fortune recording artists Nathaniel Mayer and Andre Williams and recording sessions with legendary Wildman, producer, songwriter, singer Kim Fowley.

At many Detroit and suburban record stores such as Sams Jams, and Desirable Discs he assisted the public with finding music of various genres and taste for over two decades.

Organization of the benefit came through friends of the singer/songwriter/drummer/raconteur after Bootsey received a diagnosis of brain cancer in October 2009 The X-travaganza is being held to help Bootsey meet some of the substantial cost related to treatment of the disease. Join him and Timmy's Organism, The Love Masters, The Meltdowns, Space Heaters, Dale Beavers,and The Cats in Bags dancers. There is going to be a special performance for the first time in 20 years by Jerry Vile and The Boners.

Three Day Grace began their Headlining tour in Michigan, starting in Grand Rapids on March 26th. MCB caught up with the band at the Dow Arena in Saginaw on Saturday night.

Dan Sultana captured some great shots as Three Days Grace belted out hits from their new release "Life Starts Now." The fans were rocking and fist pumping the entire show! The Toronto based band is comprised of Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar), Neil Sanderson ( drums, piano), Brad Walst (bass), and Barry Stock (lead guitar).

UPCOMING SHOW: April 8 - Drive-by Truckers @ St. Andrew's

Coming to St. Andrew's Hall on Thursday April 8th for a headlining appearance are Athens, Georgia's own Drive-by Truckers. Combining ass-kicking rock with Southern sensibilities and themes that resonate with working men and women everywhere, the Truckers have been winning audiences for over a decade. With a new album The Big To-Do, just out, Drive-by Truckers are coming to St. Andrew's Hall to rock Detroit with their unique but familiar blend of guitar-driven Southern rock, and indie/punk stylings and great collaborative song writing. Opening for them in Detroit is Langhorne Slim - at 7pm.

Drive-By Truckers’ The Big To-Do is out in stores On March 16th, and in celebration, the band has released the first of a series of webisodes about each track on the record. First up, in celebration form, is the beautiful number “Birthday Boy.”

A werewolf short is headlining the April 6th Mitten Movie Project! The April MMP features "Coyote," the latest by Grand Rapids filmmaker, Joel Potrykus, whose previous short, "Gordon," headlined the 2008 Mitten Movie Project Zombie Night. Also on the bill is the Twilight Zone-esque short, "The Bungled and the Botched," and the experimental piece, "Last Train Home," a short by local producer, Aaron Karns. The April Mitten Movie Project takes place on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the Main Art Theatre (118 N. Main Street, Royal Oak 48067). "Coyote" showcases a lonely and down on his luck guy who turns to drugs to suppress his werewolf tendencies. This short was shot on Super 8 film, a special treat for the Mitten Movie Project as most shorts screened are shot digitally.

The MMP is accepting submissions for the 8/3 MMP Future Filmmakers Night, a night to celebrate and encourage the future filmmakers of Michigan. The MMP FFN will showcase local shorts 15 minutes or less by high school students, middle school students, those in youth groups with film programs or shorts made when the filmmaker was age 18 or less. Submission is free. All accepted filmmakers will receive a swag bag with filmmaking supplies and an info and resource guide for the independent filmmaker (put together by MMP Curator, Connie Mangilin). The 8/3 MMP FFN audience choice award winner will also receive a terabyte external hard drive.

In other news, the winner of the March 2010 Mitten Movie Project Audience Choice Award was "The Window," the latest short by Tom Gurisko which is a play on scary monster childhood fears. Second and third place winners were "Rock the Paper with Scissors," the short chronicling the comeback of a rock-paper-scissors champion, and "Thief, Interrupted," a story of a thief who is interrupted by phone calls from his dysfunctional family during a heist. "The Window," "Rock the Paper with Scissors," and "Falconry: The Ancient Craft" will air on the Mitten Movie Show on Comcast 18/Wow 52 from April 7th to May 1st on Wednesdays at 11 p.m. and Saturdays at midnight in Auburn Hills, Berkley, Clawson, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Oakland Township, Pleasant Ridge, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, and Troy to reach over 140,000 households.

ULTRA Music Festival - This Weekend in Miami, FL

Swiping the MCB credit card for a night out is one thing but using it to boost a weekend out of the D for Ultra Music Fest is a different story... The people of Miami at ULTRA were begging for some Detroit coverage of the world's most famous outdoor Eletronic Music event, but failed to tell us until 3 days ago... Because everything we do for our readers and our city is FREE - I didn't feel right about putting in an expense report for my $1,200 plane ticket. (Luckily, we have a guest contributor in Miami taking photos and representing the birthplace of Techno music).

The legendary Ultra Music Festival reveals its most elaborate production to date, the TWELFTH EDITION. UMF returns to Downtown Miami’s oceanfront Bicentennial Park for 2 DAYS and 2 NIGHTS. There will be 16 stages set over two days, featuring more than 200 DJs, bands and producers. More than 100,000 international music enthusiasts are expected in attendance for this historic event!

Some of MCB's favorite acts will be performing today and tomorrow at Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami. Headlining tonight is DJ Tiesto alongside Carl Cox, Kaskade, Dirty South and our most recently covered electronic show The Crystal Method.

Tomorrow some more Top 10 in the world DJs like Deadmau5, Armin Van Buuren (currently #1), ATB, Above and Beyond and Paul Oakenfold hit the stage.

25 Years of Detroit Techno

The year 2010 is an exciting time for the Detroit Electronic Music community as it marks the 25th anniversary of the birth of Techno in the city. To celebrate, a collective of artists from Detroit past and present will be coming together to perform under the banner
D25: Detroit Twenty Five. Included in this collective will be some of the most influential and respected artists to emerge from the city including Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Mike Banks, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Kenny Larkin and many others. Throughout 2010 and into 2011, these unique collaborative D25 events will be taking place worldwide celebrating this momentous occasion in Detroit music history and the lasting impact of both the music and the many artists associated with it.

It is hard to believe that it has been twenty-five years since 1985 when Juan Atkins founded his independent record label Metroplex in Detroit. Launching with the ground breaking hit single “No UFO’s” (recorded by Atkins under his alias – Model 500), the Metroplex imprint quickly set a new benchmark for music in the city. Atkins’ releases like “Night Drive,” “Interference” and “The Chase” helped the seeds of a new techno movement in the city propagate, promoting a new mode of creativity. We should not forget though that Atkins built Metroplex on the ground he’d already been exploring for five years along with his partner Richard “3070” Davis in the band Cybotron. Together in their home studio in Ypsilanti, the duo had quickly racked up some of the finest electronic records ever made including tough, otherworldly yet warm timeless cuts like “Clear,” “R-9”, and the song that launched the Detroit Techno style, 1984’s “Techno City”

Derrick May once famously described Detroit Techno as “Just like Detroit, a complete mistake. It’s like George Clinton and Kraftwerk stuck in an elevator.” But like Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, Derrick and almost all their successors took a lot of inspiration for their seminal work directly from a late night Detroit radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Mojo (real name Charles Johnson) ran a five-hour long radio show every night from 1977 through the 80s, taking in everything from new European New Wave imports from the likes of Kraftwerk to the funk / pop of Prince and the B-52’s. Mojo’s eclecticism and wide ranging tastes didn’t have boundaries – if anything, the only universal theme in his show was a feeling of funk (electronic, acoustic, white or black, it didn’t matter) – one segment of his show was even called “The Midnight Funk Association.”

Miami's annual Winter Music Conference is celebrating 25 Years of Detroit Techno with exclusive sets by Carl Craig, Kenny Dixon Jr., Kenny Larkin live, Kevin Saunderson, Kyle Hall, Monty Luke, Stacey Pullen, Theo Parrish + Juan Atkins.

Michigan hosts a world-class collection of artists and designers who are dedicated to producing great work in a great place. Now more than ever, we should celebrate design as a vital engine in our state's on-going recovery. Designers are problem solvers. Whether it's a city designer working to solve the issue of affordable housing, or a graphic designer bringing legitimacy to a non-profit through branding, the range of conflicts designers encounter is infinite. It’s no secret that Michigan has significant problems, however every challenge the state presents is an opportunity for innovation.

Julie Lang
Julie is Associate Design Director at Campbell-Ewald advertising, dedicated primarily to the Chevrolet account. Through her 18 years in the industry she has worked as an illustrator, art director, magazine design director and as an independent in her own one-woman design firm. Her clients have included Herman Miller, Chevrolet and Detroit's Epoch Restaurant Group.

Her work has been recognized by publications and competitions including Communication Arts, AIGA, the ADDYS, the One Show and The Art Directors Club.

Jody Levy is an artist and designer. She has been with experience design firm o2 Creative Solutions since the company’s inception in 2001. Jody works with the multi-disciplinary team at o2 to create interactive and immersive experiences such as live theatrical productions, museum and gallery exhibits, non-traditional communications campaigns and more. Jody is an artist and travel writer. Her travel website, Native Nomad, features the best experiences in cities across the globe.

Susan Skarsgard
Susan Skarsgard is an artist and designer known internationally for her original fine art works, site-specific installation art, graphic design, artist books, & calligraphy. Her work is widely collected by individuals and institutions which include the United States Library of Congress Rare Book Room; Newberry Library, Chicago, IL; University of Michigan Special Collections, San Francisco Public Library, and Smith College, Northampton, MA. As a lecturer and teacher, Ms. Skarsgard has conducted workshops and presentations for numerous institutions, organizations, and conferences, traveling extensively throughout North America, Australia and Europe. She has worked for 15 years in the Industrial Design department at General Motors and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan.

100 Monkeys at The Shelter by Stanley Stevens

100 Monkeys played at the shelter not too long ago, giving one of the best shows I've seen since I started shooting for MCB. Great group of band members with a wide range of songs. One of the most amazing parts was that they all played every instrument, switching off after every song. You can tell that this band has a true passion and natural talent for performing, whether on stage or off (two of the band members are also actors, one of whom was in some small film called...'Twilight', I think it's called). They gave a shout-out half way through the concert to a former band member that inspired a lot of their songs, Spencer Bell, who passed from Cancer a few years ago. I would encourage all of you to check out both the Shelter, if you haven't been there, as well as the 100 Monkeys.

The D.U.B. Camp is a group that consists of Bluman, Byza, Killa Ru and Fats from Romulus, MI. a city known more for Metro Airport then hip-hop but Camp Life Entertainment‘s D.U.B. Camp are trying to change the view that Rom-Town is more than just air planes. Each crew member brings a different perspective to the track. With four members, their tracks are like one song blended together so its sounds like four tracks in one. Fats Explains, “I’m the most inspired when I'm around my crew, I think God put us on the same team because we're all really competitive people.”

Over the years, they have put out many solo releases; together they have put out “Da Camp Is Here” and “The Thrill of Victory Mix tape”. On the 16th of March Fats just dropped his album “The Network” then on April 20th Bluman will release "The New Beginning”. The Camp has no intentions of slowing down with more releases to follow this year. Production duties are handled by Fats and KIDD (BG/Tone Tone) has done production work with them in the past. “Locally, I would say everybody out here is really grinding and putting out quality music, we’re here to contribute in making Detroit music” Bluman. concludes. DC has been contributing to MCB for a few years now and we love her

DC-in-Detroit is one of the post-internet breed of renaissance characters who can crank out a 400-word article before breakfast, but has no idea how to boil an egg.

She's FCC licensed, published with real ink on paper, has hand-made two corsets, spent the night in Lizzie Borden's bedroom, and is a winner of the Pepsi Challenge.

She's still a better driver than you are, even when she's had twice as much to drink.

And if you ask nicely, she'll probably take you home.

You've most likely met her, but you either immediately forgot who she was, or you dreamed about her for four nights in a row.

DC has to do the math every time someone asks how old she is. And yet the boys at the liquor store still do a double-take every time they card her.

Her highest ambition is to become an adjective:

"It's positively DC-esque."

She suffers from attention surplus disorder: "The easiest thing in the world for me is to pay attention," she says. The hardest thing, for the record, is remembering what just happened.

There will be a Q&A to followThe screening begins at 8:30 doors are at 8pm."Portland filmmaker and Peripheral Produce ring-leader Matt McCormick makes films that combine found and original sounds and images to fashion abstract and witty observations of contemporary culture. In his recent documentary Towlines, which features an original soundtrack by James Mercer, Matt explores the role of the tugboat in modern society, while in American Nutria he examines the plight of an imported species and chastises capitalism’s tendency to create its own disasters. The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal makes the observation that the process of destroying one art form unwittingly creates another, while The Vyrotonin Decision, created with scraps of 16mm television clips from the early 70’s, reflects on some the advertising world’s more embarrassing moments. Matt’s work has screened in film festivals, galleries, and d.i.y. art spaces around the globe, and his film The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal was named as one of the ‘Top 10 Films of 2002’ by both The Village Voice and Art Forum magazine. Matt has also worked and collaborated with several artists and musicians, including The Shins, Miranda July, The Postal Service, Avalon Kalin, and Calvin Johnson."

TONIGHT: AANM Global Thursdays - La Chispa & Company Arab American National Museum

Global Thursdays - La Chispa & Co. Flamenco

Flamenco is more than an art form for La Chispa & Company, it is a way of life. Valeria Montes - “La Chispa” (The Spark) - has emerged as the most talked-about flamenco performer in metro Detroit. The Detroit Free Press called her "mesmerizing" and Metro Times declared her "beauty in motion." At this engagement, La Chispa will debut a new show featuring some of the greatest flamenco artists from around the country: Luis Linares “el Tiburón” (guitar), Alfonso Cid (vocals), Vicente Griego “El cartucho” (vocals) and Rómulo Bernal “El Calamar” (percussion).

Global Thursdays at the Arab American National Museum is a multicultural performance series showcasing the finest in world music, dance, film and performance art. A wide variety of local, national and international acts truly allow you to “see and hear the world, here” at the AANM.
