The newest addition to the MCB crew is Anna Hergot
AH will be providing "Smitten by Detroit" for your reading pleasure whenever the hell she feels like it. - Enjoy!

12.5.08 Sex Ghost/Eat Sugar/LML show @ corktown tavern, detroit

Man, I can't stop watching epic related films. 300. Lord of the Rings. 28 Days Later. Star Wars. Hell, even Captain Ron is epic in it's own ridiculous ways (it takes a real man to wear a eye patch). Maybe this sudden obsession with adrenaline rushes is in part due to the equally epic show

I went and saw at the Corktown Tavern in Detroit this past Friday evening. 12.5.08. Now I haven't been a patron to the Tavern much since Dorkwave, the multiple D.J. spinning free dance party, has been off the radar but i'm sure happy I made it out friday to see the bands that were entertaining.
Ferndale's, Love Meets Lust, headlined the show. Visiting band from Cincinnati,OH, Eat Sugar was sandwich in between the groups and Sex Ghost opened up the show.

A brief summary of the the bands de jour:

Sex Ghost:
Brilliant two-some, busting out on an electrical wave of sexual innuendos and foot stomping fun. Natasha is a reincarnation of Norma Jean herself and had the stage performance mirrored of Karen-O. Completely-unrestrained- crazy-applesauce!

Eat Sugar:
'NO GUITARS JUST KEYS, DRUMS, BASS AND SEXUAL TENSION' These guys made the 4 hour trip from Cincinnati, OHIO. Driving into the bowels of our decaying, cutthroat city to provide us with the fantastic, fresh sounds of an post-punk electric punch. From the eerie synth sounds in 'Clap Your Hands' to the head bobbing, firecracking sounds of 'Black Eye'. I was glad to catch these guys.

Love Meets Lust:
I am ashamed I waited till now to finally see these guys play. Like the child on the neighborhood street that was last to get that Stretch Armstrong toy (remember those?) or Malibu Barbie. I have BEEN FUCKING DEPRIVED. I defenitly heard the 80's influence and was thoughghly enthralled by everything they did on stage. I mesmerized by all the songs, Direction, in particular. John Webb's voice was mesmerizing under the multicolored light show trailing the music, putting a hypnotic spell on the crowd. Even when the light display DID fall apart and there was a slight technical malfunction...John and the band were able to keep composure and entertain the crowd with jokes and small talk.

Wild At Heart

Is it just me or is losing weight a terrible thing to have to do after a certain age. When I moved back to Rochester I was hitting about 250 lbs and since then it has been a roller coaster ride that I seem to be losing. I was down to 238 about a month ago but a few bad choices and back to 250. I hate that the increases can be so fast. Lose a pound, lose a pound, lose a pound, gain three. It just sucks. I really need to ramp this up a notch if I'm going to get under 230 esp after having the doctor tell me my sugar is high. but not that bad yet if I get on top of it. makes you envious of the past ages when stuff like diabetes was essentially unknown. Then again, people only lived to 40 or what not and I'd like to be around hanging out at concert venues til I'm 100 or there abouts.

Mainly I have been hanging out at the Eastman School of Music which is part of my problem. Some of the recitals do have food and it's all sweets and I just cannot turn them down. Luckily I don't buy them from the stores and just eat junk food at moments like that. I just need more self control (or get more exercise). Getting ready to hit a Symphony tonight after doing a number of recitals, a couple of classical music groups and the opera "Orlando" (which was incredible despite getting lost in the halls afterwards).

I think I did find a potential hobby after I retire though. I went to the Assisi Foundation here in Rochester to check out Toothpick World, a display of famous buildings around the world done in 1:164 scale and made entirely out of toothpicks. He has about 50 models on display there until April (so feel free to drop on by if passing through) accounting for over 3 million toothpicks, 25 million gallons of glue and 6 years of hard work. I think it would take me 6 years to do just one. You got to admire the dedication to do something like that and have it come out so cool. here are a few pictures for those who are not familiar with his work.

I just wished my picture of Yankee Stadium came out better. Anyway, for those looking for something to do concert wise, here are a few choices, esp that Yo La Tengo (with a video off new album) show at the Michigan Theatre:

Wednesday (2/06) – Duende! @ Loving Touch (Ferndale)

Friday (2/08) – Yo La Tengo @ Michigan Theatre (Ann Arbor), Candlebox @ St Andrews Hall

Saturday (2/09) – Lightning Love @ PJ’s Lager House, "Blues At The Crossroads Festival" feat Fabulous Thunderbirds and Tinsley Ellis @ Michigan Theatre (Ann Arbor), Sponge @ The Ritz (Warren), Los Lobos @ La-Z-Boy Center at Meyer Theatre (Monroe), Thornetta Davis @ Filippa’s Wine Barrel (Utica)

So The Ruiners are releasing a new CD entitled "Happy Birthday Bitch" on August 24th through Pravada Records.

Here is the PR statement they put out regarding the new LP:
From Detroit USA, The Ruiners are a wild and fantastic beast; pure white lightning & sexy self-destruction. Having endured club bannings, beatings, court enforced restraining orders, jail terms, cat fights, pregnancies, bankruptcies, heart attacks, overdoses, emergency room visits and death threats over the last 10 years, the band is now fresher, sexier & more self-confident then ever with their brand new album "Happy Birthday Bitch". This 10 song blast of Detroit sleaze is destine to be thee greatest party record of all time, with a lot of fuzzed out sounds, primitive drums, mucho sex appeal & greasy bar room grit%u2026and that my friends is what The Ruiners do best.

Please visit: www.myspace.com/theruiners

Track Listing:
1. Sugar Buzz
2. Love/Hate (Eat Me Alive)
3. Fix That Broken Halo
4. Charlie Laine Ate My Brain
5. Happy Birthday Bitch!
6. Suburban Cop
7. Messin%u2019 Around
8. Beer Time
9. Screw You
10. Panther Tears

The Ruiners are a band that owe the majority of their sound to the late 70s early 80s Detroit Punk Scene. This sound was formed by bands like The Sillies, The Stooges, and Dollhouse. A few of current Detroit groups fall into this category today (Circus Boy, Motorcity Orphans, Bootsey X & The Lovemakers). They are a shining tribute to the old. A reformation, a renewal, a resurgence. It's cool that there is a large enough (national) market that The Ruiners are able to get on an Indie Label like Pravada Records and get distribution. This isn't meant as a slight against their music, just that this raw, fuzz, distorted sound is not the mainstream (even in the indie market). Rather, it's what you have to dig to find within the catacombs of local music history lore. The Ruiners have been around for as long as I can remember, and what's always stayed with me is their insane live show. This, of course doesn't transfer well to the CD, but if you have seen The Ruiners once, simply spinning the 1st track of "Happy Birthday Bitch" will let you relive the last time you saw them. Help you to remember the dancers. Help you to remeber the pyrotechnics. HBB isn't the most polished record but it captures that era of sound where you didn't give a fuck and just wanted to get an emotion across. So what emotion are The Ruiners trying to convey with HBB? Basically, the fun in living by the motto of Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll. When you get a chance, download the new record. It's available on Amazon.com. They will be having a proper release party at The Lager House on October 1st. Also, there is a rumor that they may shortly be part of the Motorcity Special family....

Wild At Heart

Been having a fun week. Had a cracked wisdom tooth removed last week and still trying to eat out of one side of my mouth. I haven't really done that much but I did catch the new James Bond movie today after work and I must say it is incredible.

There has been a lot of talk of it being the best Bond movie ever and I agree it is up there. Nothing will ever replace the wonder of "Dr No" or "Goldfinger" but this installment of Craig's Bond brings in a personal note like my favorite scripted movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". Sam Mendes of "American Beauty" seems the perfect choice for bringing that personal touch to the action in this installment.

Javier Bardem is one of the best Bond villains who really brings the movie home with a very personal final battle at Bond's family estate. From his first screen moments, he just radiates a menace that while seemingly light-hearted is also intensely evil. His presence makes the film as well as Craig's broken down yet resistant Bond that truly captures that Fleming flavor.

While not officially reviewing this film, I must say it is an awesome addition to the Bond lore and worth watching. From the opening teaser with Bond getting shot, through the attack on MI6, M's struggle to defend the need for old-fashioned spy work in front of the government (a big theme throughout the movie), to Bond worrying about losing a step and the final fight, this film brings everything you want in a Bond film and some stuff you have never seen in a Bond film and wonder why not. I'd give it a solid A.

PHOTOS: What Crepe? Royal Oak's Délicieux New Cafe

Photography by Sue Antosh

MCB had the opportunity to check out the new Royal Oak restaurant
“What Crepe”
on Washington near 4th Street in downtown Royal Oak.
Like most - we have had brief experiences with crepes in places like Toronto, Paris and Montreal.
This place got an official
“I would totally eat here again!”
from the MCB crew.
Paul “PJ” Jenkins Jr.’s dream was realized this May at the former location of Café Muse and WILL NOT disappoint. Totally delish with vegan and vegetarian options as well as traditional sweet and savory crepes. French Pressed, locally roasted, fair trade organic coffee are brewed and also serving juices, sodas and teas.

Actually, they have over 50 different kinds of crepes!
We made the choice of Mushroom Madness; button, shitake mushrooms, gruyere swiss cheese concoction, awesomely satisfying. And the Mixed Fresh Berry crepe with smashed fresh berries, house made whipped cream, powdered sugar, beautiful, tasty and not over sweet for those of us who like our berries on the tart side.

The setting is small and quaint- like a Paris bistro.
Stop in, say hi to PJ
(this isn’t the lager house kiddo)
and settle those hunger pangs!
They are open every day but Monday, Tues & Wed from 11:30 – 8:00 pm, Thurs & Fri 11:30-9:00 pm. Saturday from 9:00 – 9:00 and Sunday from 9:00 – 3:00.
And hey, if you work or live in Royal Oak they’ll give you 10% off with proof.
BTW, they are working on their Bistro License from the city
so shortly you will be order a nice fat glass of red with your lunch or dinner.
A + neighborhood joint .
Thanks PJ and best of luck to you!

Not only do you get tickets to check out Iceage at the Pre-Party on 8/10 but your tickets are good for the entire 4 days of FUCKING AWESOME FEST at The Majestic Complex

Danish punk group Iceage formed in 2008 when the bandmembers averaged 17 years in age. Influenced by early hardcore and no wave, and with a sloppy, anarchic style of playing not too far removed from West Coast indie/punk bands like No Age and Abe Vigoda, the band’s short and raw debut, New Brigade, was released in 2011 on What’s Your Rupture in the U.S. and on Tambourhinoceros in Europe.

New Brigade is Iceage’s debut album , 26 minutes of anthemic stress, of tension undiluted by worldly wisdom or amassed experience, (its members are teenagers, presently ranging from 16through 18 years of age. New Brigade displays a conidence that substitutes worldly experience for the thrills of discovery, of knowing that it is possible to forge your own path in light of adults, the establishment, and prevailing wisdom telling you to do otherwise. Iceage mixes ’77 punk, ’79 post-punk, Goth and hardcore as if they invented it, and does such an excellent job of blending these tropes with the pent-up energy and frustration of the just-post-pubescent years of young mens’ lives, that they might as well have. In this tradition, New Brigade’s twelve songs rushpast, long enough to hit you in the chest and short enough to make you wonder
what happened.

YouTube shows Iceage’s live shows to be frenetic, sometimes violent affairs with very little compromise in the way of sound or concept. You may get pushed around. Deal with it. This is a punk record from a punk band that plays punk shows.
American audiences will get their first chance to see them play this summer.

Vocals Elias Bender Ronnenfelt
Guitar Johan Surrballe Wieth
Drummer Dan Kjaer Nielsen
Bassist Jakob Tvilling

Alkaline Trio is going to be a great show but we want to get there early to check out the opening act Smoking Popes - read below and win tickets by emailing motorcityblog@earthlink.net

Alkaline Trio has announced their 15th anniversary tour, inviting Smoking Popes (one of their greatest influences) to join them. Smoking Popes built a relationship with their legion of fans and fellow musicians by melding raw songs about bittersweet heartache with soaring melodies, power chords and punk spirit. Inspired by the Popes, Alkaline Trio emerged onto the scene and have built an immense cult following. Matt Skiba, vocalist of Alkaline Trio, said, “The Smoking Popes were a good band that only wrote good songs. They have always been a big influence on Alkaline Trio and are a huge reason a lot of us started bands in the first place.”

The Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio have recently released new albums. Smoking Popes released, This is Only a Test, which is their first ever concept album, exploring the life of a fictional high schooler. This is Only a Test is perfect proof that their sparkling lyricism and ineffable charm is still intact. The tour kicks off in Omaha, Nebraska and arrives in Pontiac on August 4th at the Clutch Cargo's.

This is Only a Test's songs explore themes of identity, musical aspirations, love and teen suicide. Singer/Guitarist Songwriter Josh Caterer explains, “When I first got the idea to write from a teenage perspective, the individual songs came really quickly. I wrote a song a day for five days. That’s half the album in less than a week. I never write that fast! Each song stands alone asa snapshot from this kid's life. The story doesn't unfold like a narrative. It's more like a collage." Recorded at Chicago’s Atlas Studios in 2010, the album was produced by Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms, Less Than Jake).

Some may assume that This is Only a Test is autobiographical but Caterer lays that notion to rest, saying, “The main character on this album is definitely a creation. He’s not me. Well…he’s similar to me, but he’s not limited by the realities of my own experience. I created a character that basically has the same view of the world that I had when I was in high school, but he’s his own person and he does some things that I never did.

Smoking Popes first burst onto the scene in 1991 and released several albums on various local labels. They signed to Capitol Records in 1995 and re-released Born to Quit¸ one of Smoking Popes landmark albums, to an even larger fan base gained by touring with bands like Jawbreaker and Jimmy Eat World. Praise from SPIN, Alternative Press, Rolling Stone and Billboard arrived with the re-release and later that year, “Need You Around” was also featured in the hit movie Clueless. Musical icon Morrissey raved: “Did you ever hear Born to Quit? It’s by the Smoking Popes. I thought that album was extraordinary, the most lovable thing I’d heard in years”.

In 1997, the Smoking Popes released Destination Failure. The album challenged the idea of what a pop punk band could do, with lyrics that told tales of love and longing with heartbreaking details. To the shock of many, Smoking Popes decided to throw in the towel in 1998. In 2005, rumors started flying that the band would perform again. Their sold out reunion show at Chicago’s Metro on November 11th sparked a resurgence of Smoking Popes fans, leaving the crowd yearning for new material. The band was re-energized and reformed for good, releasing Stay Down in 2008 and in 2010, Its Been a Long Day, a compilation of songs released on rare vinyl singles.

CSICon 2011
27-20 October 2011
New Orleans, Louisiana

In my never-ending quest to bring my MCB buddies the best of culture, worldwide, I begged the MCB credit card off Blogdaddy and dragassed down to New Orleans for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry's CSICon 2011. And some other things.

Who is CSI? You might know them better as CSICOP. …No? Does this help?

The mission of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry is to promote scientific inquiry, critical investigation, and the use of reason in examining controversial and extraordinary claims.

To me, one of the most important points they make regarding their mission is this one:

To carry out these objectives the Committee does not reject claims on a priori grounds, antecedent to inquiry, but examines them objectively and carefully.
