Music on the Brain - by MCB's Andrew Bender

Music on the Brain
I’d written most of this week’s column before I’d heard yesterday that self-anointed King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had died yesterday at 50 years old. I’ve read and watched a bit of the coverage going on and can’t help but think back to when Princess Diana died in terms of the outpouring of reflection, reminiscence, sentiment and emotion. I was 10 years old when Thriller came out, and it was one of the first albums my older brother and I owned - we listened to it way too many times. I’m sorry to admit it, but I never bought parachute pants (I’ve just never been that cool), I never mastered the moonwalk, and I never danced around with a single glove. Despite everything else (and I do mean ‘everything’) Jackson was a songwriter, musician, and performer the likes of which we shall never see again.

Glide Magazine’s Hidden Track section has a great piece today with a number of examples of jazz, rock, and jam bands from Phish to Miles Davis to Santana that have covered Jackson’s work.
Click here to check it out. I highly recommend it.

As a memory researcher, I find it amazing that we can engage in mental time travel, merely with the trigger of something like a photo or a song. Seeing images from the Thriller video brings me back to when I was ten or eleven watching MTV in my best friend’s living room – I can practically smell my friend’s shaggy golden retriever basking in the sun as we stared in amazement at the video’s special effects. So what will I (try to) remember Michael Jackson for? Here’s a few things that come to mind, but the list is by no means exhaustive: Michael Jackson wrote ‘We Are the World’ with Lionel Richie, he collaborated with Paul McCartney and Quincy Jones, or
As Dave Chappelle said, “He wrote Thriller. THRILLER.”
He was the Scarecrow in the movie adaptation of ‘The Wiz,’ and he taught me that human beings can move their bodies in almost unimaginable ways (no, he didn’t teach me personally – sheesh). Most of all, I have the utmost admiration for all that Michael Jackson did to bridge divides between people through projects such as the ‘Heal the World,’ ‘We Are the World,’ being a voice for HIV/AIDS in America. Rest in peace Michael.

On a lighter note, last week I wrote about expectations in music and made some comparisons about how our memory and experience fuels both our expectations and our appreciation of art and music. To some degree, music appreciation is all about taste. Some people love old school hip hop, whereas others might prefer radio friendly country music. Similarly, I suspect that many jazz enthusiasts probably have little appreciation for or understanding of a lot of punk and scream or noise rock. However, as I mentioned last week there’s the idea of openness to new and different genres than one may otherwise be comfortable with. To me, it’s largely about letting go of, or at least managing, one’s expectations. A lot of people go to the same restaurants, order the same dishes, and are perfectly content with that – there’s no risk and the reward is predictable. Others like to try new things, risking a bad meal with the potential for discovering something new and amazing.

I like to think of pop music as similar to fast food, or perhaps to those family feedbag restaurants like Fridays, Applebees, or Bennigans. What you’re getting has been vetted and tested to be widely acceptable and although individual tastes may vary, it’s as widely appealing as possible.

Another analogy for pop music that I’ve lately been using comes from psychology – specifically from research on our perceptions of physical beauty and attractiveness. A number of studies have shown that what makes someone’s face physically attractive, at least in a scientific sense, is being as average as possible. However, by ‘average’ I don’t mean plain, but rather in the statistical or mathematical sense where features and spacing between those features is all in the middle. Nose not too big or too small, eyes not too far apart or to close together, and so on. Similarly, a lot of the most popular music doesn’t push the boundaries and seems to be an amalgam of acceptable traits – not too long or too short, standard verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus format – anything that doesn’t make the listener think about changing the station. To stretch the analogy a bit further, it’s often those with mostly ‘average’ facial features and one deviant feature (nose a bit too big, eyes too far apart, etc) who we consider to be truly beautiful – almost as if they’re more human and more interesting or accessible as a result of the defining characteristic. Similarly, I think that a lot of the ‘great’ or ‘break out’ pop music has stuck to most of the formulaic tendencies of such radio-friendly tunes but has made some significant deviation from that formula keeping the general framework palatable and familiar while doing something different enough to make people take notice. In that sense, pop music and science have a great deal in common – both take existing ideas and build on them in relatively small increments to generate something a little different that’s interesting and hopefully somewhat novel.

If you extend the metaphor to philosopher Thomas Kuhn’s idea of paradigm shifts – after all of these small modifications and tweaks to existing models, a whole new approach can come about that has a lasting impact on what’s being done after the acceptance of the new approach. Kuhn’s definition of paradigms was restricted just to science, but others have since adopted it to all sorts of other areas. Examples of this include Elvis Pressley and white boys making rock and roll, Jimi Hendrix changing the concept of how to use/play the electric guitar, David Byrne and Brian Eno’s 1981 album ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’ as a new model for electronic music, Nirvana and the widespread birth of grunge rock, or Sublime’s genre-bending combination of punk, ska, reggae, and rock. Okay, these may not exactly fit the definition of paradigm shifts (perhaps the rock and roll or Jimi examples are better analogies) but the general idea is that pop music is popular because it conforms to our expectations until someone comes along and throws those expectations out the window in a new way that changes all the rules.

Next week I’ll be covering the Rothbury Festival in western Michigan, but I’ll try to get a little post up on Friday, and hopefully something that’s relevant to the festival season.

MOTB Festival(s) of the Week:
This week was a real toss up of sorts –
the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival is going on around Wayne State University, and the College for Creative Studies and the rest of the Cultural Center, not to mention downtown Windsor as well. Click here for more info It should be a great time for cinema lovers of various stripes.

For metal heads and music lovers out there, the Stars and Stripes Festival in Mt. Clemens goes on from Friday through Sunday featuring Uncle Kracker, Ratt, Night Ranger, Morris Day and the Time (really?), Dokken (yes, that’s rockin’ with Dokken), and Edgar Winter (I might go just to hear him play his amazing song ‘Frankenstein’ in person). Rock out with your cock out or at least hang out with your wang out.

WILD AT HEART - Thursday August 28th 2008

Here is today's blog - Bill
Bill Kettelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Labor Day Weekend Extravaganza
Not sure how excited I am about Labor Day since I have been unemployed for
almost a year, but this is a big weekend with a lot of fun stuff going on.

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September
since its start in 1882 as the Central Labor Union sought to create "a day
off for the working citizens". Now some might joke that a lot of today’s
labor force already takes enough time off but I’ll play nice (i.e. – get
back to work and read this blog during your lunch break).

Besides being a day of rest, Labor Day means different thing to different people.

For some it signals the end of summer and for others the start of the NFL and NCAA
Football seasons (I’m sure fans of the Lions, Spartans and Wolverines have
there stomachs tied in knots since all three programs have a rough start
which might show what there season might look like and it might not be
pretty).

Locally, there is the Mackinac Bridge where people may walk the length of the Mackinac Bridge. Whatever Labor Day means to you, just have a good weekend and be safe so you can get back to work on Tuesday in one piece. If you haven’t decided on what to do this weekend, let me make some suggestions.

Starting off is the 11th Annual Arts Beats & Eats in downtown Pontiac. Musically, it is a very sound festival with a lot of great local and national acts. Friday is a strong night for local artists including blues artist Harmonica Shah, Monkey Jacket,Hard Lessons, Twistin Tarantulas
and the Howling Diablos. You will also have performances by national acts Blues Traveler and Rusted Root so if you really want to rock out, this seems to be the best night for that. Also, the Crofoot will be hosting a “Metromix presents Encore” opening night after party with complimentary drinks provided until 10 p.m. courtesy of the Detroit Sports Club and live music by the Hard Lessons, Millions of Brazilians, Prussia and Our Brother the Megazord plus others. Saturday seems to be the day for country and jazz fans with artists such asThornetta Davis, Billy Currington, Boney James (a two-time Grammy nominee who is a saxophonist who popularized urban jazz - an updated version of contemporary jazz that contains elements of hip-hop). Sunday is kind of a mixed bag for me but despite 80’s rockers Loverboy, you do have a performance but funk and soul legend Chaka Khan. Local artists of note include Manna & Quail, Emily Rose, Robin Horlock Band, Broadzilla and the Muggs. There are a lot of other great local bands which
probably shows the biggest diversity of great local talent at the festival. Things wind down on Monday with national act Puddle of Mudd and local artists such as Jill Jack and the Ragbirds. Other reasons to go to Downtown Pontiac for this festival include the Guitar Hero Championships (sign up on www.artsbeatseats.com), numerous art vendors, a lot of fun things for the kids and ways to help yourself become more environmentally friendly.

This should be a great festival and I hope to see you down there. Of course, maybe you are looking to be a little more mellow atmosphere which would lead you to the Detroit Jazz Festival down at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius. This year the focus seems to be on more traditional jazz opening on Friday night with four-time Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist Dianne
Reeves.

This year’s line- up does have some uniqueness with “Mashed Potato Time” singer Dee Dee Sharp, The Derek Trucks Band (coming off a great performance at Rothbury) and jam band Stratospheerius. However, you will mostly hear just some great traditional jazz with artists like Pat Martino Quartet, Roy Hargrove Quintet, Count Basie Orchestra, DSO Civic Jazz
Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. This is usually a nice
event to stroll around and take in the various stages if the weather stays
nice (only some showers on Saturday at this point look to hassle the weekend
so far).

Complete schedule at www.detroitjazzfest.com

Lastly, there is the 2008 Belle Isle Grand Prix. Like last year, Friday is
FREE admission day where you can watch some of the qualifying rounds and
check out some of the Meijer Family Fun Zone events. There will be some big
name musical acts at the races with performances by Sugar Ray on Saturday
and Everclear on Sunday. There are three races happening this weekend
including the IndyCar Series, the American Le Mans Series and the SPEED
world challenge.

For more information and full racing and entertainment schedules, go to www.detroitgp.com

Also, I just heard that Paxahau is putting on a special event this weekend to promote it’s 10th year anniversary. Since 1998 Paxahau has promoted electronic music and has grown to include a web archive, booking agency, record label and an event production company which puts on numerous events in the Detroit area including the popular Movement Festival.

The events include a pre-party on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Exodus (located in Greektown) with music from DJ’s Chuck Flask, Rich Korach and John Johr, Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Oslowith Zip and Chuck Flask, Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Z’s Villafeaturing DJ’s Richie Hawtin, Magda, Rich Korach and Dan Bain and lastly Sunday, August 31, 2008at Northern Lights Loungewith Cassy and John Johr.

Full details can be found on their updated website, www.paxahau.com

If you are looking for some movie to check out, here is one that might interest you. Hollywood loves remakes since they feel the audience will be comfortable with the product and be more likely to plunk down the cost of a ticket over some new property. In this case, we are looking at the remake Death Race (originally released as Death Race 2000 which was directed by
John Carpenter and starred Sylvester Stallone and John Carradine). The original is a cross country race where pedestrians are run down for points (creating a wonderful pastime for real drivers) and a secret group is trying to bring an end to the race. Transplant the race into a future where the race is now a pay-per-view event for a prison (the winner of 5 races gets
parole). Ex-NASCAR champion Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) gets framed for killing his wife and sent to prison where he is supposed to race in place of the newly killed Frankenstein (who wore a mask so nobody knows his true identity). The warden is totally vicious and played nicely by Joan Allen but that is all the praise I can really give for the film. As the warden is trying to make sure nobody survives this race, Jensen tries to find a way to get revenge on his wife’s killer (who is in the prison) and to find a way to escape. The film has some nice moments but none of the overall fun of the original which I think to confine it into a traditional prison movie. I would suggest renting the original and seeing this update only if you really are a Stratham fan (though this doesn’t have a lot of his trademark fighting of the Transporter films which would have helped). Grade C-.

Alice Cooper rocked the State Fair last night, effectively ending the best of their concert schedule but you can still go to check out the wonderful Miracle Of Life exhibit, the half-snake/half snake lady (you just got to love a fair with freaks), a display by the Michigan Sports Hall Of fame,
fishing on the pond, the world’s largest stove, seeing the best livestock Michigan has to offer and of course the best artery hardening food we have to offer. I spent three nights down there and enjoyed just wondering around.

I also spent some time at the Next Shot Golf Center which is a permanent fixture of the buildings down there but they were offering demos during the fair. I tried some of the holes on the Pebble Beach course which was kind of neat for those gold fans who don’t like golfing in the snow. This is a nice way to keep your game sharp. Check them out if you get down there.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and that I see you at some of these
wonderful Labor Day events. Take care and talk to you again on Tuesday since
Monday is Labor Day and I’ll be busy. Peace Out.

$15 Cover // 18+

Electric Six - FLASHY
Evil Cowards - Covered in Gas
we have a winner - thanks
Evil Cowards is a new band...
If your in NYC catch them at
The Bowery Ballroom on May 5th 2009
head on over to the MOTOR CITY BAR after the show
to knock back a few cold ones

The laws of human anatomy dictate that if you squirt a stream of scalding hot water up your left nostril, two things will happen. The first thing that will happen is that you will cause permanent damage to your sinus tissue and your first line of defense against infection will be rendered useless for the rest of your life. But secondly, and most important for our purposes in this piece of propaganda, the water will exit your from your right nostril. In order for water to enter and exit your head, it takes two nostrils!!!

Like the apple falling from the mountain and hitting Isaac Newton in the face, this was a real-life, real-time event that happened to one of today’s leading rock stars – Electric Six’s Tyler Spencer. Upon cycling boiling water through his sinuses for kicks, he realized it was a metaphor for his approach to creating music.

“The water,” thought Spencer “is God’s love. And it goes in me and destroys my sinus walls and immune system and comes dangerously close to my brain. In order for God’s love to come out of me and become music, I need a second nostril. And that second nostril should be my friend William Bates from the band Fall On Your Sword. He has a studio in New York City. I live in New York City. We can do this quite easily.”

And so the two nostrils, Bates and Spencer, collaborated in the summer of 2008 in Bates’ Tribeca studio. Not because of sinus problems. Not because of God. Not because of anything we’ve established heretofore. No, they collaborated because they had something to say.

And so it was that Evil Cowards came to be.
Bates and Spencer kicked out the 13 songs that would comprise their debut CD Covered In Gas at a pace of their choosing.
The infectious album opener “Love Pigs” was borne in their first session and it was decided then that more songs had to be created. The two men, unafraid to make songs sound catchy and repetitive and formulaic, did just that.
Because those are the types of songs that stay in your head, unlike scalding water, which will exit your head via your right nostril, William Bates.

Tyler Spencer is an American.
Nowhere is his robust Americanism more pronounced than in his ode to the two most American of endeavors – love and war. In the funky “Sex Wars” we pay homage to the greatest generation, our GIs and our jarheads. Yes, they went overseas and they killed some guys, but they also liked to fuck. Somehow the two things become the same. That’s what this song is about. And it’s catchy!!!

William Bates in an Englishman. The album closer “Chopping Up the Teacher” is sung by Bates in his native tongue – English. When you are English, anything is possible. You have abandoned the Church and your toes are still tapping. But you still need to confess. Best to do it while you are pissed and hanging out with your mates at the Hawley Arms.

To summarize, Evil Cowards are releasing their debut album entitled Covered in Gas on May 19, 2009 on Metropolis Records. Every song on the album is catchy while bathing in the majesty William Bates’ unique production.
The band will do live performances over the summer
that promise to be as entertaining as the record itself.
horeography, nudity, live animals, prosthetic limbs –
all these things will feature in the Evil Cowards live show.
Neither Electric Six nor Fall On Your Sword are ceasing operations.
Evil Cowards are here to stay.

MCB is rolling to the Ann Arbor Electric Six show for some photos and video interview

Downunder Detroit - TALL KIWI CHICK on assignment

TALL KIWI CHICK was a winner in one of our contests for free tickets
and of course we chatted it up a bit and met up with her and her crew at the show.
After knocking back a few cold ones we were fast friends and thick as thieves.
Anyway - we thought it would nice to get some insight about good ol dietroit
from someone with a bit different perspective so we created

Brett Does Detroit
So i had my first Phone Interview last week, with Singer Songwriter Brett Dennen.
It could've gone better.. but that was me, not him.
I got nervous.

Mainly because i love him so much and hope one day we'll get married..

This may not happen now, since i came across as a clumsy uncoordinated loser.

Oh well, i still talked to him, and i'm happy!!

I came across his music, a few years ago, when 'Aint No Reason' was the Itunes free single of the week. I immediately started listening to the rest of his album 'So much more' and i've been a fan ever since. If you haven't heard his music before, you should check out 'The one who loves you the most'.

It's my favorite!

PHONE INTERVIEW
What's going on?
I've just arrived at the venue for our Boston show, it's foggy outside!

When did you start playing guitar?
I started learning when i was 13 at Summer Camp, i started learning the likes of Neil Young & John Denver

What would you be doing if you weren't a musician?
I'd be working as a teacher, or something more community based with kids, music, art and preferably outside!

I see you are helping promote some community non profit organizations on your website www.lovespeaks.org ?
I'm just using my influence to inspire people to be more aware of what is going on in their communities .

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
I would increase our compassion & love towards each other, which would be a stepping stone to solving some of the bigger issues going on.

Will you marry me?
Yes. I do!!

Ok, so maybe that last question didn't happen... outside my dreams....

Brett's show last Tuesday @ Saint Andrews was everything i wanted it to be and more!! From the moment Brett came on stage i was smiling! His uniquely different, amazingly beautiful voice sang every song i wanted to hear!! (except my favorite - but it was on the setlist - WTF?!) He danced and thrust his hips (Woohooo!!) with confidence and owned the stage. 'Wrong about me' & 'San Francisco' were my favorites from his latest album 'Hope for the Hopeless'. Brett's song lyrics are beautifully honest, with a message of Love & Peace. I left the show still smiling, wishing i had the time/money to follow brett around on tour, like a drug, i wanted more!

I hope Brett comes back this way soon, so i can get another fix...

So Thanksgiving week continued to be fun, went to my local pub on Thanksgiving Eve, the biggest bar night of the year.. which was good. We had been warned prior about what to expect..We showed up extra early, to avoid any line-ups, what they didn't mention is that most of the people at the bar would be around the 21 year old age,

and all the girls would be wearing tight little outfits.

That's Awesome..

My highlight was standing at the back door chatting to my bouncer/friend and watching the people try to skip the line out front, by coming in the back door. I felt great pleasure every time he told hot chicks to go around to the other door!!

My low-light was every time i went to the bathroom, i found groups of girls talking in that 'Valley-Girl-Irritating-as-Nails-on-a-Chalkboard' accent... I was so tempted to ask if they were from CA or MI.. Because unless you've spent time hanging out 24/7 with Paris Hilton, there is no excuse to talk like her when you're from MICHIGAN!

Thanksgiving Day was pretty low-key.

Us kiwi orphans had a Beef Roast dinner, which i managed to screw up.

Yes. I blame the meat entirely, it had nothing to do with me..

But everything else turned out well, and we had cake which was good! Someone asked why we didn't cook a Turkey? Turkey is ok as a sandwich filling, but not as the center of a dinner meal... The idea of roast Turkey is a little odd to us, maybe because we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in NZ? Although, in the grand scheme of things, i guess it tastes like Chicken anyway, which is good, so i probably should've just done a Turkey.. Maybe for Christmas?

Electric Six was on Friday night, back at Saint Andrews. I didn't realize they are from Detroit, So i was stoked to get to see them live in their hometown!!

They rocked it on stage!!

They played lots of songs from their latest Album 'KILL'..

WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN!!

FREE CD: Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains - Pike Room Crofoot Pontiac - Thu April 16th

MCB has a free copy of Sebastion Grainger & The Mountains
for the 3rd emailer ~ CD is gone man!
SEBASTIEN GRAINGER
with FLASH LIGHTNIN' and MILLIONS OF BRAZILIANS
at the Pike Room
THURSDAY APRIL 16
doors at 8PM
tickets: $8

Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains is a record
that reflects the majesty its title suggests.

Big chords, soaring choruses, and Sebastien’s voice paint the portrait of a man still climbing. While lyrically and musically, Grainger’s taken a sidestep away from the more aggressive approach of his past musical pursuits in favor of a more reflective and personal style, he still knows how to rock it when necessary. Pulling no punches, Sebastien’s crafted a muscular and smart rock record that will surprise people expecting him to relive his past.

Best known for his contributions as singer and drummer for Canadian dance-punk duo
Death From Above 1979, whose decadently catchy anthems took the world by storm with the release of their breakthrough record You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine in 2004, Sebastien Grainger is soon to be even better known to the world as a singer and songwriter of sophis- ticated distinction via his new solo works.

Fans of his prior music will likely be surprised by his new direction: delicately layered ruminations rich with energetic arrangements and deep melodic undercurrents. With his first full-length album Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains he further expands upon the well-received melodic endeavors of his digital EP American Names.

Grainger will modestly tell you “every song is a problem, or an equation that I have to resolve,” but it’s obvious that the results are richer and more soulful rather than calculated and math- ematical. Feeling like he is finally expressing himself on his own terms with the new record, Grainger is eager to hit the road once again and present these songs to the folks who’ve been curious about his next move after the dissolution of DFA 1979.

Although he’s a self-described “domestic person,” Grainger’s penchant for singing loudly, playing as hard as possible, and getting sweaty is real–as real as people’s enthusiasm for him to keep doing so.

Downunder Detroit meets The Drags / DEVILFISH/ The Satin Peaches / The Matt Truman Ego Trip @ PJ's Lagerhouse by Tall Kiwi Chick

"Downunder Detroit"

is the new column written by our TKC
who is visiting Detroit for a while
from her homeland of New Zealand.

She loves music,

men & drinking

"She's Sweet As!"

DOWNUNDER DETROIT
BY Tall Kiwi Chick
photos/sidekick coolness by Lauretta West

So Friday night we headed over to PJ's Lager House to see/interview
The Satin Peaches, The Drags, The Matt Truman Ego Trip & Devilfish.
We had a wicked night, and I'm stoked to have checked out
some great local detroit music, which has given me new motivation
to find out what other great local bands are out there to see!
I will now stop whining about how horrible winter here is
and debating whether or not to move to Florida and get my ass to some more gigs!!
I also love how all the local gigs have fairly cheap cover charges!

The Satin Peaches..

What's your favorite Satin Peaches song right now?

Red, Buckley & Gojira (In Retrospect, when interviewing multiple bands with multiple members i need to pay more attention to who says what...)

What are you most looking forward to this year?

New Set-Up (Jesse returned back in Oct so they are back to the original line-up of TSP) & Recording!! We're starting to record next week!

Coolest venue you've played?

The London Astoria (which was demolished early last year)

Quick Questions - When was the last time someone got into a fight? George!! Around 2 years ago - We're lovers not fighters.... What one thing can you not live without? Vagina, My Heart, George can't live without himself, and Jesse can't live without George either since they live together. Longest time without bathing? Aaron had the whole band beat with 4 months!! Current Fav Detroit Bands? Lightning Love, Mick Bassett & The Marthas (playing this sat @ MCB5!) and Millions of Brazilians. And last quick but important question..

'Who would you go gay for?!!' (Or if you're gay, who would you go straight for?!) I love this question, and I myself have pondered this question for many years now. My answer has changed a few times over the years, but enough about me... They chose Steve Eiserman(who?), All 4 Beatles, Bill O'reilly and William Shatner. I wish i could remember who said what!

The Matt Truman Ego Trip (from Bowling Greens, Ohio)

What do you guys have planned for 2010 aka twenty-ten?

A new record, we're maybe calling it 'Exhale on main street'

What's the weirdest thing you've thought about whilst on stage performing?

Zak-Whether or not my shoes are tied.. wait that's not that weird..

Quick Questions - What can't you live without? Derek -Music Matt-Water Eric-Food Miguel-Internet Zak-Bagels. What's your drug of choice? Nicotine, Caffeine, Heroin, Tylenol, Antacids & Life(!). (In case you were wondering, it was about now that my hands started to HURT cos it was that cold outside...) And lastly - Who would you go gay for? David Bowie (Ziggy era) Robocop.., Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) Clive Owen and Matt Truman (No he didn't pick himself).

Zak - I hope you remember that you promised to pay for Lauretta & I's drinks if we come to Ohio to check you guys out again! Cos i remember that very clearly!!

The Drags

What have you got coming up in the future?

We're recording an album at The Loft and trying to get the record finished. We're also enjoying having some good shows and crowds within Detroit, and hope to expand that further.

Current Favorite Detroit Band?

The Satin Peaches

Quick Questions- What is your least masculine habit? Probably the fact that most of us enjoy taking baths...no not together! What songs do you sing in the shower? Andy- Marvin Gaye - Let's get it on ( Boom chika wah wah), Greg-Our stuff, Dave-Hi Mom!! Who would you go gay for? Eric Bana, Mick Jagger, Dave & Greg. Tito loses points for not answering...

Devilfish

Musical Highlight of 2009?

Playing at 'Dally in the Alley'. It's a music festival in an alleyway. The sun was shining, families were out with their kids. It was gorgeous. Other highlight was Matt joining the band!

How would you describe your music to people to haven't heard you before?

Silly. Stupid. Remarkable. We get our inspiration from older surf rock bands. Not all our songs have vocals but we can't sing which is why. But we would like more vocals so girls like us.

Quick Questions - Where would you never get a tattoo? My teeth, My body, My face. Who would you NOT brake for if you saw them crossing the road? New Zealanders... *threatens the band-slap-'oh god this bitch is crazy!' -sobs* Oh we'd like to change our answers to Bush, Kevin Bacon & A Skeleton so i could see it explode. Who would you go gay/straight for? Skeleton Horse (Yes pierce has a thing with skeletons) Lady Gaga & Paul Rudd.

Bonus points are awarded to Jason for attempting to educate me in concert photography.

Matt from Matt Truman Ego Trip for choosing the girls bathrooms for their band photo.

Dave from the Drags for buying me a drink.

Jesse from Satin Peaches for guessing our accents correctly

and George, also from Satin Peaches for giving me a back massage!!

George gets double bonus points!

Peace out and see you Saturday at MCB5
