MCB's Detroit Artist Spotlight w/ Tony Roko

MCB's Derek Ecker takes the Detroit Artist Spotlight to Tony Roko

MCB's Derek Ecker will be heading up our newest addition to the anti-blog called

MOTORCITYBLOG's Detroit Artist Spotlight

This is going to be a bi-monthly video interview with local detroit artists who want a little extra promotion...Derek Ecker is a long time contributor to MCB and a recent graduate from CCS (and a kick ass artist as well) who will be taking this one on in his quest help develop the art scene here in the motorcity.

Our virgin victim is Detroiter Tony Roko who is currently part of the Cpoportunity 2 Exhibit up on the walls of CPOP Detroit for a few more weeks.

Let us know what you think of the MCB-DAS (Detroit Artist Spotlight) or if you would like us to hook into you and your art world please let us know by email

Tony Roko in the MCB Detroit Artist Spotlight w/ Derek Ecker
This months Detroit Artist Spotlight victim is no other than Tony Roko. For those who aren’t familiar with his work, this guy is Detroit’s ultimate artist. He’s unschooled and stripped of all the BS I got thrown at me in art school, his work is totally all his own. He creates these vivid paintings with industrial automotive paint enamels , with subject matter is full of Detroit gritty charm . Tony’s story isn’t like any artists I’ve ever heard. Most artists struggle trying to obtain notoriety and recognition, but Tony Roko just kind of fell into his toxic motor city art career.

From his days as a child Tony was never pushed to excel in his studies. In fact, to his family a career in art was comparable with the life of a methhead. His family came from a hard working background, and that seemed to be the life he was destined to live. Never having any direct influences from what art historians and scholars would consider “High Art”, Tony became fascinated with the readily accessible art of pop culture. Cartoons such as Fat Albert, Loony Tunes, and Kid Dynamite (J.J. from Good Times) as his great artistic influences of his youth. But Tony never imagined that this fascination could ever be something he could make a living at.

Until Tony got his first big gig.

Working at Ford’s Automotive Plant, in the eye’s of his family this was Tony’s golden ticket. Tony never found the job so glamorous, but lets be honest it was helping him pay the bills. Although Tony’s art dreams seemed more and more like an mirage in the distance. He never stopped sketching and became known around the plant as the resident artist. Until one day this term of endearment really went to a whole new level. The higher ups heard of Tony’s skill and decided to hire him to create a large scale mural in hopes of boosting company moral. So here is this everyday blue collar Ford worker thrown into this great artistic opportunity, which to me in our modern times can only be compared to being commissioned as a painter for the Vatican church.

Eventually Tony was doing large murals all over the Ford system, and making a good name for himself. It was in the process of doing these murals that he discovered the beauty of painting with automotive paints; which was the only medium that had the ability to withstand the harsh environment of the factory, while maintaining the vibrant colors and integrity of his works of art. Unlike the painters who were commissioned by the Vatican at the Ford plants he was sometimes forced to paint over walls caked in grease, soot and whatever else, and apparently according to Tony nothing held up against the odds like the industrial and automotive paints did.

So in the process of discovering his affinity with automotive paint in his murals, the technique eventually trickles its way into his more personal work. (Kids as an artist myself I would like to take the time to advise you; don’t do what Tony does. He is a trained professional and industrial/automotive paints are extremely toxic and harmful to your body).

Right now Tony is working on a series of paintings revolving around the lives of tenants living in a loft with distinct Detroit charm to it.

So for a guy who was never meant to be in the world of art, he sure is making a waves and getting some attention in the D. Tony may just be getting his feet wet in Detroit’s gallery art scene, but something tells me he’s going to around for many years to come. He’s making great decisions as to what shows to associate himself with, and staying true to what he feels is relative subject matter for even the snootiest art buyers tastes. His work has been shown at The Dirty Show 08’, Cpopur2unity in 09’ , and be on the lookout for him at The Dirty Show 09’, and the I Hate Lucy show coming up on February 13th.

So be on the lookout for January’s Motorcityblog : Detroit Artist Spotlight victim Tony Roko and buy his paintings because homeboy has a $300 window to pay for.

After this interview Tony found his car busted into, but that’s just more pain to fuel this artists creative fire.

TONY ROKO Exhibit & Artist Reception - 323East Gallery Royal Oak - Friday 1/14 6pm

Revolutionary Art Unveiled at Auto Show
Represents a New Beginning for Ford

www.tonyroko.com

Ford autoworker and Detroit artist, Tony Roko, best known for his Motown Series specifically created for the legendary Motown Historical Museum, is ready to reveal again. His latest work, "Plant Life," is slated to be featured at the Live Media Launch of the International Auto Show on December 14th. This groundbreaking piece is also to be exhibited on
January 3, 2010 at the grand opening of Ford Motor Company's new Michigan Assembly Plant.

"The work is revolutionary," said Anderson Robison Jr., UAW Local 900 president. "It really represents the shift in thinking that has taken place within the entire UAW/Ford system." "Plant life" was created by mounting scrap metal to repurposed pallets, and then painted with industrial enamels exclusive to the automotive industry. These post-industrial materials have survived the demolition of the former Michigan Truck Plant, and as art, have transitioned their way into the new Michigan Assembly Plant," said Roko. The massive 10'x10' piece pays homage to the modern American autoworker and reflects a capable and diverse workforce. "Lilly," a larger-than-life character, is planting seeds on her break in front of a historical Ford factory designed by the late legendary Detroit architect Albert Kahn.

"I was inspired by the way Ford and the UAW handled the auto crisis. We didn't accept bail-out money, from the government, and this artwork is symbolic of our comeback,” added Roko, a former line worker who has painted over 40 murals in his 20 years with the company including the grand opening of the Dynamometer Laboratory Building in 1996. Roko was approached by Ford and the UAW to paint murals for a Plant Beautification Program as a joint effort to boost company moral in 1992. "It's a Cinderella story," says Roko of the life-changing event that helped him realize his childhood dream of becoming an artist. "I was 21-years-old and I was offered an opportunity of a lifetime.” When asked how he began using industry specific materials to create art, Roko replied, "I began using the industrial enamels out of necessity; I knew nothing else would hold up to the gritty factory environment. It just seemed to evolve naturally from there."

"Tony is an innovative artist," said David Torosian, MAP Site Manager. He's given these everyday automotive materials a new purpose and we're proud to have this historical piece a part of the celebration.”

"Plant Life" is one of an ongoing series intended
to inspire employees to think beyond the traditional.
Roko’s work has also been displayed at Detroit's most premier galleries, including an upcoming exhibit at the prestigious 323 East Gallery in Royal Oak, January 15th - February 10th 2011.
The FREE artist reception begins at 6pm on Friday Jan 15th 2011

Marvin at Motown -- Tony Roko on display at Motown Museum

Marvin at Motown
Motown HistoricalMuseum
2648 West Grand Boulevard
Detroit, MI 48208-1237
313 875 2264

Plymouth artist Tony Roko's painting of Marvin Gaye will be on display at the Motown Museum exhibit in honor of the life and career of the legendary recording artist through the month of April.

"Roko captures the feel of Studio A", said Lina Stephens, Chief Curator at Motown, "We're excited to have the piece for our exhibit", Lina added of Roko's 36"x48" depiction of Marvin smoking in the famed studio. "No smoke - No sing was Marvin's policy on recording" said Roko, "Marvin always got his way, even when it wasn't good for Marvin".
The painting's narrative is in reference to when Gaye, a longtime marijuana smoker, refused to put his joints out for the pregnant Diana Ross, who immediately complained to Berry Gordy about the issue.
Gaye refused to sing if he couldn't smoke in the studio, and the duets album was recorded by overdubbing Ross and Gaye at separate studio session dates.

Roko is best known for his stylized portraiture and his innovative use of auto body paints for his artwork.
He has painted more than 40 murals for the Ford Motor Co.
He and his wife, Emily, and two sons are Plymouth residents.

Tony Roko does CPOP Gallery

Local detroit artist Tony Roko had this to say about the art opening at CPOP last weekend:

"Last Saturday, during the torrential downpour we've been experiencingas of late, I stepped out of the rain and into the quasi sophisticated world of C-Pop's Conformity Exhibition: Live Conformists DeadTroublemakers.

While I am an "artist" myself, this particular showset me off kilter.

The exhibition was an eclectic mix of photography, paintings, sculpture and installations with mediums ranging fromrubber to chocolate, "paint to pigguts"
Some of the notables:*"Daddy's Little Girl" by Cristin Richard-This was an exquisite dressmade of nearly transparent pig guts.
The dress appeared smokestained and reminded me of a dark and dreary wedding day leaving me with feelings reminiscent of a Joyce Carol Oates novel.

.*Julio Dominguez had a number of pieces including the photographs of atranny primping in a dingy motel room, "Paul and Bruce" a back-lit installation of several haunting images and a piece called "RubberLace Bikini" which was indeed, a made to order rubber lace bikini displayed on a live model.

*The prize for most disturbing piece was, "Astronaut and Baby" by James Brutus.
A painting which evoked a strong emotion with an imageof an anonymous astronaut holding a freshly born fetus.Overall, C-Pop delivered another entertaining evening with a widerange of works, staying true to their cutting edge reputation.

PHOTOS: MCB-VIDEO: NAIAS 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit USA

Detroit Muscle is finally back with the new models of Chevy Camaro, For Mustang and Dodge Challenger

We also had a chance to speak with Nick Stone who was hanging out over at the CCS exhibit who filled us in on all the new automotive designs coming out of detroit's creative pool on campus....

As we have mentioned a few times already MOTORCITYBLOG was issued a few press credentials for this years North American International Auto Show (NAIAS 2009) and we were down at Cobo Center on Tuesday to check out all the new rides .....

We are posting these photos from MCB's Amy Palomar now just so you can kill the last 15 minutes as the office BUT the slideshow will be pumped up later tonight AND we have killer video nearly completed and ready to upload before the clock strikes midnight

So we spent most of the day on Tuesday at the NAIAS taking photos/interviews/video and we need to thank our newest pal "Nik" who we met up with over the weekend and gave him a good ol' MOTORCITYBLOG version of a saturday night which included a beer at Garden Bowl - Video Interview at CPOP Gallery Detroit (thanks Adriel/Tom) with Tony Roko (cool detroit artist video on the way)....We then moved on to the Detroit Roller Derby with the Derby Girls and MOTORCITY RAH RAHs (where we shot video and photos of course) and once the bout ended we ended up at The Music Hall/Jazz Cafe for the Russian Ballet and then ending the night at PJ's Lager House for Broadzilla who was playing the Derby Girls afterparty.

MCB's Shane Glenn was hanging from start to finish documenting the night

The point to this was "Nik" is a senior reporter for Germany's largest newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and he contacted MCB to request an interview - we took it to the next level and showed him why Detroit isn't dead yet. Check out the news article he sent us today which ran in his country....check it out!

We got video of the girls from the Detroit Derby & Russian Ballet on the way!

Great to meet/hang with you Nik - Cheers from the MCB staff!

These four out of almost one hundred participating artists will earn a place in the as yet untitled “showcase of champions” exhibition to be held at the storied Detroit gallery in April of this year.

The participants will be judged by a panel of 10 locally and internationally renowned artists, media folk and celebrities with the winners to be featured in their own 4-person “showcase of champions” exhibition in April at the storied Detroit gallery. ReViEw // CPOPor2nity
Words..Derek Ecker

"The second annual CPOPor2nity went off as expected at the C-POP Gallery in Detroit cultural district . Droves of art lovers came early and stayed late for the fantastic exhibition of art. A wide range of artistic styles and mediums were on display from fine art all the way to the abstract.

For those who aren’t in the know, c-pop is Detroit’s low-brow art gallery juggernaut which has hosted huge names such as Shag, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr and Shepperd Fairy. For the second year in a row the art house behemoth has given new and up incoming artists a chance to receive a solo exhibit at the gallery. Doing most of its promoting via Myspace C-pop’s head honcho Tom Thewes was able to compile over 50 talented artists from around the world. The show had a submission fee of $125 which is a little steeper than most shows, but the artist are able to keep 90% of the sale instead of the typical 30%-50% gallery take on any given art sale. The most obvious perk of all landing a solo exhibition at a prestigious gallery like c-pop.

Some of you readers may feel that the artists are getting the short end of the deal. Well as an up incoming artist myself, trust me its well worth it. Being able to say you’ve had your work shown at a gallery which is known on an international scale is huge. Total bragging rights for an artist, especially if it’s you that gets selected for a solo show. I’m positive most emerging artist I know would at least part with a toe or two for the opportunity, so in retrospect $125 isn’t so bad.
Artist from the Cpopur2unity who stuck out to me where, Tony Roko the artist sense of color and attitude is amazing, Ruby Fig a definite natural, Josh Buckenberger who’s rich oil paintings and twisted taste for darkness and mystery is always apparent in his work. Honestly I encourage all who read this to trek their asses down to the gallery to see for themselves because the collection of work is to good miss.

After I walked out of the show I had this feeling over me. This compulsion to go back to art desk and wipe out some more paintings, step up my game up another notch or two. When ever that happens I know I’ve been to a good show. One of my favorite things about art is its ability to always be contagious, and its great to see such creative momentum like that in happening in the city of Detroit right now.

I only hope that Detroit’s art community keeps expanding and evolving. "

Derek Ecker is a recent CCS graduate and MCB contributor. He has put on many art shows in the past year including his most recent "One Man Show" currently on the walls of Cafe 1923 in Hamtramck (HATCH SHOW) -check this video interview from a previous show "WOOD to Your Mother" that MCB did covering his work.

UPCOMING: PURE DETROIT 11 Year Party Concert @ Magic Stick Detroit Friday 12/11

Pure Detroit Celebrates 11 Years In Downtown Detroit,

Celebrates With "PURE 11" Concert Anniversary Bash On Friday,

December 11 At The Magic Stick

As the heart of Detroit rhythmically raps in urban intervals, Pure Detroit methodically measures each beat by keeping two fingers on the city's concrete pulse. The duo behind Pure Detroit, Kevin Borsay and Shawn Santo, are not only legal business partners who share a duo of urban planning and design degrees, but are also legal lovers — a marriage brought to life the summer before Pure Detroit's first store opened in 1998.

Eleven years later, Pure Detroit has continued to grow. The Whitney location has since closed, but Borsay and Santo now see over a Vera Jane outlet, three Pure Detroit stores (located in the Renaissance, Fisher and Guardian buildings) and three coffee shops and eateries — Rowland Café and Stella International Café (carry-out and catering), both located in the Guardian building, while another Stella International (full espresso bar) rests in the Fisher. "As we grew, we wanted to reinvest in the city," explains Borsay. "We want the city to grow and blossom, to be more vital and bustling." The Pure Detroit stores offer a wide selection of accessories, from purses made entirely of seatbelts to the highly successful "Detroit Funk" and "Detroit Soul" t-shirt lines. On Friday, December 11, that same retail force that brought you "Detroit Funk" will be celebrating 11 years of success with the sort of anniversary bash most businesses dream of. PURE 11 — 11 bands on two stages along with 11 artists on display for $11.

PURE 11 will bring together everything Pure Detroit has stood for over the past decade plus — diversity in sound, culture and the arts in a city that is boiling over with vibrant talent. By following this philosophy, PURE 11 will bridge the gap between punk, folk, alternative indie, rock 'n' roll and hip-hop by hosting headliners The Silent Years, Phat Kat Big Band and Black Lodge along with supporting acts Prussia, Charlie Slick, Sisters Lucas, Ohtis, the Great Fiction, Catfish Mafia, The Juliets and Scarlet Oaks. Visually, PURE 11 will bring together the youngest and most promising artistic talent in the form of Gwen Joy, Tony Roko, Tracey Nawrot, William Juice Singer, Michael Segal, Cedric Tai, Justin Ames, Jesse Jacobi, Kill Taupe and Marianne Audrey Burrows for one exciting evening of sound and culture curated by local art critic Robert del Valle.

Pre-sale tickets are available through www.Ticketmaster.com, and at the door.

MCB, NAIAS 2009 and Suddeutsche Zeitung

So we spent most of the day at the NAIAS taking photos/interviews/video and we need to thank our newest pal "Nik" who we met up with over the weekend and gave him a good ol' MOTORCITYBLOG version of a saturday night which included a beer at Garden Bowl - Video Interview at CPOP Gallery Detroit (thanks Adriel/Tom) with Tony Roko (cool detroit artist video on the way)....We then moved on to the Detroit Roller Derby with the Derby Girls and MOTORCITY RAH RAHs (where we shot video and photos of course) and once the bout ended we ended up at The Music Hall/Jazz Cafe for the Russian Ballet and then ending the night at PJ's Lager House for Broadzilla who was playing the Derby Girls afterparty.

The point to this was "Nik" is a senior reporter for Germany's largest newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and he contacted MCB to request an interview - we took it to the next level and showed him why Detroit isn't dead yet. Here is the news article he sent us today which ran in his country....check it out! Great to meet/hang with you Nik - Cheers from the MCB staff!

BENEFIT FOR THE BLIND: Giving Songs a Hand - Park Bar Detroit - Sat 6/15/2013

Detroit Artists and Musicians Offer Giving Songs a Helping Hand
Fundraiser for Multi-Disabled Children at The Park Bar on Saturday June 15

Michigan-based charity Giving Songs along with GuitarGrip will host a fundraising event on Saturday, June 15 at The Park Bar (2040 Park Avenue, Detroit) for blind, multi-disabled children.  The event will feature live music by Amy Gore and Her Valentines, The Questions, and Brian Rizza, an appearance by The Retro Girls plus works of art from Lucky Monkey Tattoo, Tony Roko, Kill Taupe, Sabrina Nelson, Bowen Kline, and many more artists. In addition to the common canvas, artists will spotlight their work on hand-shaped guitar hangers donated by GuitarGrip (available for sale with proceeds benefiting the charity). Patrons will also have an opportunity to win a Fender Stratocaster signed by Detroit's-own Mitch Ryder.

“Giving Songs a Helping Hand” runs from 8 pm – 12:30 am, and all ages are welcome to attend.  Tickets are $25 and now available online at givingsongs.com or at the door.  Admission includes delicious Mediterranean food by the Bucharest Grill and a copy of Giving Songs CD “Making Music That Moves You.” All proceeds benefit Giving Songs.

Giving Songs is a charitable organization that helps families with blind, multi-disabled children. In addition to providing informational and financial support, Giving Songs assists families with purchasing MV-1 mobility-lift vehicles.  The MV-1, which is built by Allen Park-based company VPG, allows easier transport of wheelchair-bound children because it is one of the only "off-the-line" vehicles designed specifically for wheelchair use.  Two MV-1’s will be on display at the Park Bar event.

"It is wonderful to see so many artists and musicians donating their time and talents to our cause.  The amazing support that we are receiving for this event will allow us to continue to provide life-changing services to families with blind, multi-disabled children. Words simply cannot describe our gratitude," says Brent Johnson, President of Giving Songs.

Plymouth-based GuitarGrip approached Giving Songs late last year with hopes of teaming up with the local charity and using GuitarGrip's unique line of products to generate proceeds for the organization.  "At the time we already had local and national artists painting our hand shaped guitar hangers and these were being sold on our site," said GuitarGrip CEO Michael Ryan.  "The idea was to develop this further so that a portion of the proceeds from these 'artist originals' could be donated to a charity and we really wanted to help a local, Detroit-area charity.  When we found Giving Songs, a local charity that helps children through music, we thought they were a perfect match for us."

Giving Songs generates the majority of its proceeds from donations and from the sale of its first CD, Making Music That Moves You. The CD features music by local musicians who donated their time and talents to the cause.

Amy Gore and Her Valentines are one of Metro Detroit’s hottest live acts. Gore was recently named a top female act in Detroit by CW50, and the group’s single 'Drivin’ Around' is currently featured in the new Chevy Equinox commercial.

Don’t miss a night of stellar art, food and entertainment for a great cause!

©POP Gallery’s 2nd All-Media Exhibit for New and Exciting Artists!
©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

©POP is extremely proud to announce the opening of ©POPpor2nity 2008, with an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, December 13, from 7PM - 10PM, featuring over 60 new artists from the world over.

©POPpor2nity – The second call for entries for the ground-breaking, all-media exhibition for all artists who have never shown at ©POP before. For a nominal submission fee, every ©POPpor2nity artist will be featured in arguably Detroit’s most popular and influential and gallery, ©POP, with an opening reception for the artists of ©POPpor2nity on Saturday, December 13 from 6 PM until 10 PM. Cpop is expecting to fill both it’s floors with new artists’ work in all mediums.

Like the first ©POPpor2nity in March of 2007, submissions were culled primarily over the internet through social networks like, MySpace, Craigslist and DeviantArt.com, and once again ©POP has received nearly a hundred submissions from everywhere in the US as well as Turkey, Greece and Canada to name but three of the many countries where ©Pop is well known.

The participants will be juried by a panel of 10 locally and internationally renowned artists, media folk, and celebrities, with the winners to be featured in their own 4-person showcase of champions exhibition at a later date at the storied Detroit gallery.

©POPpor2nity is an innovative, artist friendly tweaking of the “vanity gallery” concept, whereby galleries lease space to select artists, a common practice in New York City Galleries, gives every potential artist a chance to exhibit up to 3 pieces for a nominal fee. The only problem is that it is usually the fee is an exorbitant amount of money for an artist to rent the entire gallery- and still have to cut the gallery in a healthy chunk of the sale. With ©Poppor2nity, many fledgling or unknown artists get a chance to exhibit in a world-class gallery at only a fraction of the normal “vanity fee”, while getting an unheard-of 90% of the sale and a chance to compete for their own 4 person exhibit later next year.

Submissions will be taken from now through December 2 - Artists may send up to 3 JPEGS in low to medium resolution to rick@cpop.us by December 2, 2008. Entrants will receive a critique and response within 3 days via email on the status of their inclusion and the amount of submission fee.

©POP Gallery is located at 4160 Woodward Detroit, MI 48226.
