"If you miss this show you are just plain stupid." - johnny knuckles
Saturday January 12 to February 22
For more information about the CARNIVORA exhibition please visit ©POP Gallery
IN PERSON ON THE WEEKEND OF SAT/SUN JAN 12/13TH
World Premier and first leg in the exhibit tour of "Carnivora -The Dark Art Of The Automobile" which will coincide with the book release of the same name published by Barany Books/Scapegoat Publishing with an opening reception on Saturday, January 12th, 2008 at 7 PM, followed by a book signing by a number of the showcased artists on Sunday, January 13th, from 1 PM until 5 PM.More than 80 internationally renown post-
Pop artists contributed a piece or two for the book and exhibit (much, but not all of the works in the book will be on display) most notably, Robert Crumb, HR Giger, Robert Williams, Marshall Arisman, Stanley Mouse, Joe Coleman & Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO.
Detroit is well represented in both the book and exhibit with Niagara, Glenn Barr, Tom Thewes, Camilo Pardo, Chris Dean & Topher Crowder. An incredible array of some of the most well-known, Comic Expressionists, Post-Pop painters and Kustom Kulture renegades , all celebrating Detroit's gift to the human race.
Curated by NY Artist Super agent, Les Barany, Carnivora is a shadowy realm where flesh and machine coalesce into humanity’s greatest technical achievement — the Automobile.
Inispensable extensions of our nervous systems, cars are metallic monsters as dark and destructive as the men and women who drive them.Carnivora: The Dark Art of Automobiles takes you on a chilling joyride powered by the Automotive Age’s hottest artists.
Carnivora presents a world where propriety and rules fly out the window vent like a lit cigarette butt , or a glob of spittle. Great art generally comes from a dark place, an alternative reality , a place of danger and excitement, not safety and comfort. Many of Carnivora's contributing artists were weaned on Kustom Kulture and all of it's thrill-seeking and dangerous glory. Here you will bear witness to the dark communion of flesh and metal, power and speed, life and death.
Welcome to Carnivora , drive at your own risk.
The exhibit runs to February 22nd, 2008
©POP is located at 4160 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan 48201, at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Willis, 4 blocks south of the Detroit Institute of Art.

Interview with Caddy Corner creator Bernardo Corman

When we asked what his name was all they said was
"They call him Bernardo..."
MCB was walking the halls of the now defunct CPOP Detroit
during the premiere of the Carnivora Exhibit a few years back
and we had the pleasure of meeting and talking to
Bernardo Corman
He touched briefly on a piece he was working on called
CADDY CORNER
and we had no idea what he was talking about
until he hit us up about it a few months later
CADDY CORNER is now complete and delivered to it final
"rusting place"
its amazing salute to detroit sleds and we wanted to
hear more from the man who built it
Caddy Corner gets a few final adjustments at the GM Dealership in Kuwait City

Some of the grisley details of the CADDY CORNER
Total weight:
2+1/2 tons

Dimensions:
18 feet around the outside curve

Materials used:
Cast bronze shell tied to a welded steel cage underneath

Number of beers consumed over the course of project:
lol..oh jeez..lots..cheeseburgers too!
Current Owner of Caddy Corner:
Owns the largest GM dealership in the middle east
his family has had exclusive rights to distribute GM product in Kuwait since the '40's

Give us some insight to your past:
"My dad used to own a place in the 'gold coast' part of the near north side of chicago called 'Melvins'..he and his partners used to get in fistfights with the chicago cops because at the time sidewalk cafes weren't allowed. That law got changed in part because of Melvins. Alot of the production crew from Playboy hung out there because it was just a couple of blocks away from the Playboy building. My dad gave Hugh Hefner copies of 'The Great Dictator' and 'Modern Times' by Chaplin in 16mm sound at a time when Chaplin was still outlawed in this country."
I have a history of having a bad attitude..
my grade school teachers were always disappointed in me..

Interview with Bernardo Corman
Creator of the Caddy Corner
MCB: The Caddy Corner has to be one of the most unique and amazing pieces of metal work we have ever seen....give us the lowdown on what drove you to create this monster of a sculpture?
Bernardo Corman: I had been working for another sculptor in the area-he made a lot of religious iconography-the Mother Mary with Baby Jesus, Jesus crucified on the cross etc...I used to joke I worked at the Jesus Factory. Anyway, that situation was getting a little old and I had been aware for awhile that this client was somewhat well heeled. So I screwed up my courage and sent him an e-mail in which I proposed enlarging CaddyCorner up to like the 6 foot range. (I suggested Big Ass Buick too-just imagine if he'd gone for that one-lol) So he came back with the idea of making it lifesize! I was floored but I thought two things-the first was that that would be truly an amazing piece and the second was that I could pull it off since the foundry I'd been working with up til then had made numerous monumental sized things.

MCB: How long did you work on this project and describe any of the obstacles you may have encountered on the way to completion...
Bernardo Corman: It took about a year and a half to complete this project. One of the things I thought right away was that I wanted to use real parts from a '59 Cadillac to give the piece a higher level of detail than the small original had. So first I had to round up the parts and make molds of them. That part took months and it was winter when I was working on all that..I was freezing my ass off in my shop while I backfilled all the little holes in the grille and all the other parts I'd picked up through a contact from a Hemmings catalog. One problem with using real parts that I hadn't anticipated was that the original sculpture was somewhat compressed..and that had been transmitted to the oversized positive pieces of foam I was using as a buck. So there was a shitload of adjusting that had to occur to the waxes that came out of the molds I made of the car parts. I also had to firm up the surface of the styrofoam plug and after some discussion with the foundry people I started spreading a thin coat of spackling paste over everything and sanding it back..I dug out my drywall spreaders and that part of the project became like a giant, weirdly shaped drywall job-days and weeks of spreading and sanding, spreading and sanding..I would be coated with white dust at the end of each days work. (I did all the mold, wax and work to the plug by myself)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NILY4jBszN8

One thing I had agreed to with this was for a place to sit in it and engineering that was a real clusterfuck..(try finding hinges that'll lift something that weighs 80 pounds or so..) (I had to hire a machine shop to produce those and that was a real adventure unto itself) Not to mention an automotive upholstery shop to generate the cushions..

MCB: With the value of metals skyrocketing was this a project adversely affected by any market fluxuations?

Bernardo Corman: The owner of the foundry had wisely bought a lot of bronze when it was priced realistically.

MCB: You design objects in the inverse scale as well - tell us about some of the smaller creations that you have conjured up recently...

Bernardo Corman: I've been slowly building up a collection of gearshift knobs and I'm currently working on a small piece that involves a laughing buddha (one of my favorite little images) wearing a business suit standing in front of a '53 Cadillac that I've abstracted as only I can..(I won't spoil the surprise of that!)

MCB: The love of cars is so obvious in your work and when we 1st met at CPOP Detroit's Carnivora Show you were showing a number of pieces but in particular a very cool Mercilasaurus...we love that piece and would like for you to describe its creation and current whereabouts...

Bernardo Corman: Yeh I love old cars especially from the '50's..I really still consider myself an automotive artist, as unlikely a career path as that one is. Merckylasaurus started out as a small study I did in the mid 90's..maybe around 1995 or so. It had a little companion piece that involved a Volkswagen-I've attached a picture of them together-sorry its so small. Anyway when Les Barany invited me to be part of his book and related show I thought it would be a good time to enlarge that particular idea. So even though I was knee deep making the molds for the large CaddyCorner project I also spent time working on blowing up Merckylasaurus in time for the show in Detroit.

MCB: Fill us in on your studio and how often you come to Detroit for inspiration?
Bernardo Corman: Lol..well my shop is what I would call a 'man cave' a real one not the silly ones I see that have linoleum floors and neon signs hanging over a tiki bar..my shop is a jumbled up place with steel tables and lots of tools laying around-chop saws and welders and grinders and vices..(man needs a vice or two)..and of course I keep my record collection out there-I have a couple of thousand vinyls so when I work I can put some Led Zep or Hawkwind on and make the walls shake...yeh I need to get out to Detroit more often..you got a sofa I can crash on??
MCB: Give us your thoughts on detroit and its rise or demise as you see it
Bernardo Corman: Oooooh thats a big one..I don't know if I want to step into that one. I think Detroit will reinvent itself one way or another..it may not be fun or turn out the way people want or expect but it will survive.

MCB: If we ever stopped losing money at MOTORCITYBLOG and hit it big would you consider or have the time to knock us out a Lincoln Lounge?
If so what year and model would you like to attack for us?

Bernardo Corman: hahaha ....1956 or 57 is the only year Lincoln to have..a Continental or a Premiere..

Bernardo is currently working on (among other things) an extension of the caddycorner theme-this one is called 'CaddyConstrictor'
You can check all this and more and purchase cool daddio stuff at

We were voted The Worst Local Blog for 2007 and we worked hard for that.

Have a great 2008! Kirk and the crew from MCB

Top 10 Lists from MCB

yeah right - get real....no top 10 lists from us....
we dont do that here

BUT....we decided to provide a short list along with our New Years Day best wishes of some of the things that WE did here at MCB throughout 2008 that we thought were worth another look in case you missed them....the good the bad the ugly

2008 was a fairly amazing year for the staff of MCB with many milestones including a baby being born, broken bones, jailtime, car chases and crashes, lottery winnings and of course lots of press passes! What is the best thing about MCB? probably that we gave away the most free swag than anyone that we are aware of and plan to continue our mission of philanthropy in 2009. Another would be that we cover the most shows without being an ass kisser.

What is the worst thing about MCB?
probably MCB itself if you can understand that one....
we need a new website/funding/new offices/replacement fluff girls

We have grown from 1 to over 20 contributors within this year and plan to move this website into the 19th century very soon. (we said that last year too)

Here are few things we thought were worth another look for whatever reason:

DEMF 2008 photostream
MCB had 4 press passes from Red Bull for MOVEMENT 2008 and we shot the hell out of the event with video & photos on and off stage but we thought this set from Lawrence Creative was seriously off the hook.

Art Battle 2008
If you missed the Art Battle 2008 at the beginning of the year you missed a great event that not only showcased local art talent in a contest for $1000 in prize money but at the same time gentrified a massive decaying space at the Russell Industrial Center. There was an electric feeling in the air that I hope returns for Art Battle 2009 coming in April (MOTORCITYBLOG sponsered of course)

Looking back - this event was the catalyst to bringing on new contributors to MCB and we tend to talk about Art Battle at least once a week.

Concert of Colors 2008 w/Don Was
MCB was the only non-ACCESS entity provided photographic and video privledges for CoC2008. Although some in town thought the "lineup was boring" it shouldn't always be about how great or not the bands are for an event. Our advice - step outside your little circle and take in something that may not be your bag....the point to the CoC is diversity and not just specifically the music itself.

MCB's Amy Palomar with Paul Hitz in tow shot photos/video of the entire CoC2008 and met up with Don Was at the "private recording session" with Sudan United for Peace over at Rustbelt Studios. My Damn Channel is running tons of footage of the event as well.

Least Attended Show of 2008
MCB's Paul Hitz said he has never been to show in Detroit where NOBODY showed up and thats just what happened to the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre in mid-June 2008 at Lager House Detroit. Now there are probably other bands this has happened to so before you go busting balls remember we were in the middle of a snow storm that night as well as a national holiday/aliens landing/ TSUNAMIs off the Detroit River whatever..check the photos and we always get good feedback from the winners of JCM music giveaways.

FREE VINYL WEEK ON MOTORCITYBLOG
We woke up on Dec 1st and decided to celebrate 4 years of Anti-Blogging with FREE VINYL WEEK ON MOTORCITYBLOG by giving awayy at least 1 piece of vinyl every day all week and it turned into this insane non-stop barrage of local detroit 7" giveaways coupled with free rare new national releases and tickets and CDs- -whatever - look for this newly founded tradition next year around the same time - its fun!

Red Bull Air Race Detroit 2008
MCB had full on press passes for both sides of the river - our shots are second to none AND we interviewed a bunch of the pilots - the only thing we didnt get access to (including the super party on top of the RenCen at Coach Insignia) was a ride in one of those sweet planes!

MCB-VIDEOs:
We have done over 150 videos of various music /art / whatever - Video Interviews with some really cool new and old school artists from Detroit or touring through the motorcity....someone sent us an detarded email with this "...anyone can do what your doing if they want to sneak in a video camera to shows..."

Hey Dooshbag - we have never "snuck" a camera into a show and unless its some local band that could care less what we do we ALWAYS get full press pass for photos and/or video

We have shot video at Live Nation shows all year because we get in with the artists PRIOR to the show and hook it up square. Anyway - here are few to dig on or delete - the good the bad the ugly from local acts but we encourage you to check out some of the video history when you have a chance.
I have listed a few below from local events - skipped all of the touring bands we video interviewed and embedded 3 of my favorite videos
From The Stone House Bar we have Friends of Dennis Wilson and The Ruiners
and then my personal favorite of all time which has been continually voted down by everyone as the worst video ever posted to MCB - so be it!
(Blenny Stoofy (not a real name) at old Scrummage U // somehow the zoom, lighting and noise in the room made serious image capturing changes dynamically on the camera)

Lola Morales photostream
MCB was asked to come document the CD Release show for Lola Morales at the Magic Bag a few months back and MCB's Cherie Stangis came out with a stellar set of shots
Lola Morales is currently playing a series of gigs throughout China and we hope to have her back in the states really soon.

Girl Talk photostream
just check the photostream by Paul Hitz - enough said

Stefani & Stefani Video Interview
not sure what got into us on this day but we knew the mayor was going to get called out with charges for the text message scandal and we just decided to go over to the S&S offices to see if anyone would talk to us---little did we know that they would sit down and talk to us in depth about the most controversial legal battle in Detroit.

NicheJobs gives MCB domain name
We have all heard that phrase "random acts of kindness" right?
well we got one when an unfortunate set of random errors resulted in meeting up with the guy who runs the company who owned the domain name we wanted for years
http://www.motorcityblog.com/ now shoots you over to MCB
He just gave it to us because he likes what we are doing....
you know what ??? We like what he is doing....Need a job?
Check out www.nicheBOARD.com
MC5 40 Year Anniversary Show @ Crofoot
MCB's George Petersmarck snagged one of my favorite sets of the year on a press pass for the Ice Cube show in Mt Clemens Emerald Theatre
MCB's RiazK shoots everywhere and had this to say about the Back CC's show he covered for Savage Productions a few months back - "It was nice to see these guys bring it to town - they were drinking when I met up with them way before the show and didnt stop till the last drop...thats when they got on stage and let it rip....wow! what a show!"

Flag Day 2008
MCB covered 10 events in 1 day - We can do that now with all our contributors no problem but Amy Palomar and myself spent 7 hours and a tank of gas running to hell and a handbasket from one place to the next....I am talking shooting video at the DSO (of the orchestra no less) to a book store event to 2 art galleries to Trumbullplex Theatre (I,Crime Interview) to MOCAD (new detroit music) to Lager House to Corktown Tavern to The Old Miami to Luna Lounge and back to Memphis Smoke...it was insane...we covered punk to porn to classical to country to industrial and all the art and anti-art in between.
No links for you...look up Flag Day and find all this in the archives.

Here is one "Best of" for you from MCB
There are all kinds of others to list but you know what - it takes to long go back and review MCB archives ...forget it and forget 2008 // its over. i will be adding to this post for the entire year...check back from time to time if you like
Big thanks to all of our contributors...you make MCB even better with killer photos / professionalism / coolness
2009 will be awesome for us and you - just make it happen!
We already have press cred for the NAIAS 2009! YEAH!

All the Best in 2009 from the staff of MCB!
