MetroTimes Blowout 2008

1st off - buy a ticket wristband here

There are 200+ local detroit bands that are killer on this years lineup

For some reason there is a Hard Lessons showcase but the band isnt even playing this year - I mean are they that good they get thier own showcase? We dig the band but there are plenty of other kickass motorcity groups who ARE playing the blowout who should get some attention.

We recommend checking out as many bands as possible...unless you really want to hang at Detour's top 20 or MT special picks....waiting for a beer and crowding like lemmings.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 5th (LAUNCH PARTY)
CETAN CLAWSON (the guy simply kills it)
I, CRIME (check some video here)

THURSDAY MARCH 6th
The lineup at KELLY'S BAR will be a good one to check out - dont miss lightning love
THE BLOIDS
LIGHTNING LOVE (one of our MCB favorites)
CHARLIE SLICK (check the MCB video here)

Make sure to get over and say hello to all the HANDMADE DETROIT CRAFTSHOW and buy some goods at the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS where they will be ALL NIGHT (MCB VIDEO)

If THE BELMONT crowd is more your style then at 12:00 AM don't miss OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY who always tears it up (check him jamming here on an MCB video)

Over at PAYCHECK'S you got HELLEN early and THE RUINERS who are always fun

Early over at KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS is MANNA AND QUAIL (MCB video here)

FRIDAY MARCH 7th

Don't miss one of detroit's most overlooked bands over at the ATLAS BAR with MAZINGA going on at midnight who are just going to blow you away

Plan on stopping in at some point any of the Loco Gnosis bands at Paychecks
PRUSSIA
DUENDE! (dont miss!)
WILDCATTING (check the MCB Video here)

Over at WHISKEY IN THE JAR are very good bands called TONE & NICHE and then BIRDGANG (check the MCB video here)

Make sure to stop in over at P.L.A.V. POST 10 to say hello and jam out to our new friends from the detroit hillbilly band HORSE CAVE TRIO (check the MCB-Video here)

CHILL & MINGLE with some very cool tunes by DARLING IMPERIAL and MADAM XD

Any of the bands playing KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS will knock you back a step or two but if you can get inside the venue early you will be sure to catch a great show with the DETROIT COBRAS one of MCBs personal favorites for sure.

Of course CARJACK will be an awesome fun time (check the video here) over at The Belmont

SATURDAY MARCH 8

BAKER'S STREETCAR is hosting THE DISPLAYS and LENNY STOOFY (MCB video)

JEAN'S will be jamming with EASTSIDE ELVIS LIZ LARIN & finishing off the night with THE CASKET BASTARDS (MCB VIDEO)

GINO FANELLI plays the KELLY'S BAR (dont miss this one folks - gino rocks the place)

SMALL'S will have a killer lineup all night if you want to defeat the purpose of a wristband
CORONADOS
BLUESONG
CHAPSTIK
EASY ACTION

dont miss THE MOTOR CITY SIDESTROKERS & JENNIE KNAGGS at WHISKEY IN THE JAR
MCB will be out every night shooting pictures and video so look for a nice little video piece of our blowout experience right back here real soon and remember its not who you see that makes you cool - its who sees you seeing who you see that does it all.

THANKSGIVING EVE BASH! Triple music video premier featuring The Infatuations, Paulina Jayne, & The Mike Leslie Band

Three of Detroit's biggest and best local bands are throwing a party and you're invited.

Join Detroit's biggest acts, The Infatuations, Paulina Jayne, and The Mike Leslie Band as they premier brand new music videos before their show on Thanksgiving Eve, at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. All of the music videos were filmed by Michigan film students from Madonna University's Broadcast and Cinema Arts program - Capstone Film Class. They will also all include some famous Detroit locations. We had the chance to ask a few questions to each of the artists about the new videos.

 The Infatuations

The Infatuations are premiering a video for their brand new song, "Yesterday Morning". It was filmed at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Max M. Fisher Music Center. We asked The Infatuations founder, Christian Draheim, a few questions about the video.

MCB: Why a video for "Yesterday Morning"?
Christian:  Capstone had a concept for a music video and they were looking for a song around the time we were working on "Yesterday Morning". Unaware they were looking for a song I happened to have sent Jennifer Champagne (the class instructor and executive producer) a demo of "Yesterday Morning".

MCB: How did it come about/ why use Capstone Film Class to make the video?
Christian: Capstone did their very 1st music video with us for Blame It On You in December of 2011.  Dan at Showtime Clothing in Detroit told us about them, and put us in contact with Jennifer. Capstone and The Infatuations have become good friends and Wolf, Nick, and I have worked with them on other videos too as band members or cameos. My girlfriend has been the wardrobe supervisor on several of their videos too.

MCB: Tell me about the plot/theme for the video.
Christian:  It's a performance piece vs. being a story line. In addition of the band, we have Capstone Choir and the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony featured in the video. The orchestration arrangement was created by Herschel Boone and Kevin Wilt.

You can stream the audio of the new song, "Yesterday Morning" here: http://theinfatuations.com/yesterday-morning/

About The Infatuations:
The Infatuations are "Simply Detroit." The Motor City starts coming out of your speakers the second the first note hits. This band celebrates every sonic movement that is undeniably "Detroit" with every song they create and perform; from Motown soul to the inescapable good-time bravado of Parliament Funkadelic, to the raw, untamed rock energy of MC5 and Detroit Rock City's last three decades of powerful rock n roll. The Infatuations compel you to dance to the groove. Be sure to check them out on the web at www.theinfatuations.com and on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheInfatuations.

Paulina Jayne

Paulina Jayne is premiering a video for her song, "He Doesn't Know It Yet". It was filmed at The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club (including a 40-foot sailboat) and the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. We asked Paulina a few questions about the video.

MCB: Why a video for "He Doesn't Know It Yet"?
Paulina:  The song that I chose to make a music video for is called, "He Doesn't Know It Yet". I recently started working with a new, phenomenal, Emmy-awarding-winning, number one hit songwriting producer of Nashville, TN, by the name of Trey Bruce. I can only remember about half of the amazing things he has on his resume because there are so many! Haha He produced this song of mine, and I have never felt so satisfied with the production of my music. I am in love with his work.

MCB: How did it come about/ why use Capstone Film Class to make the video?
Paulina: I decided to play it for my dear friend, Jennifer Champagne (the professor of the Capstone Film Class), and she contacted her students right after the song ended telling them that my song would be their next project. My first music video was filmed by them about a year ago, so I was already aware of the outstanding talent and professionalism that the class has. In fact they won a student Emmy for it!

MCB:Tell me about the plot/theme for the video.
Paulina: We filmed at The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and at the Edsel Ford House to put together a video portraying a young girl who would steal away a guy's heart, but he didn't know it yet.

About Paulina Jayne:
Paulina Jayne is a high school junior who recently turned 17 years old. She started piano lessons at age 6 and began songwriting at age 9. Self-taught on the guitar, ukelele, and mandolin, her repertoire now includes well over 200 songs in all genres, though her country tunes have most recently captured national attention. Be sure to check her out on the web at http://paulinajayne.com/ and on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/paulinajayne

The Mike Leslie Band
The Mike Leslie Band is premiering a video for their new single, "Weather Vane".  It was filmed on the rooftop of Town Pump at midnight, showcasing the city lights of Detroit. We asked Mike Leslie a few questions about the video.

MCB: Why a video for "Weather Vane"?
Mike: This song is our new single, "Weather Vane". It's very upbeat and catchy, and needed a good video

MCB: How did it come about/ why use Capstone Film Class to make the video?
Mike: I was in the Ty Stone video for "Faith in Love" made by capstone, and it was a wonderful experience. I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather work with for my video.

MCB: Tell me about the plot/theme for the video.
Mike: The theme is very simple, the band is playing the song on the roof of the Town Pump at night in Detroit. You can see the whole Detroit skyline. As the song progresses the weather gets rough and the wind picks up and there's debris everywhere, like a disaster is happening.

About Mike Leslie Band:
Formed in Downtown Detroit during the hot and steamy summer of 2012, Mike Leslie Band is undeniably a product of their environment. MLB offers an eclectic twist of pop music while delivering hook after hook of spine chilling melodies hauntingly relatable lyrics. Check out the band on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mikeleslieband

Top 10 Lists from MCB

yeah right - get real....no top 10 lists from us....
we dont do that here

BUT....we decided to provide a short list along with our New Years Day best wishes of some of the things that WE did here at MCB throughout 2008 that we thought were worth another look in case you missed them....the good the bad the ugly

2008 was a fairly amazing year for the staff of MCB with many milestones including a baby being born, broken bones, jailtime, car chases and crashes, lottery winnings and of course lots of press passes! What is the best thing about MCB? probably that we gave away the most free swag than anyone that we are aware of and plan to continue our mission of philanthropy in 2009. Another would be that we cover the most shows without being an ass kisser.

What is the worst thing about MCB?
probably MCB itself if you can understand that one....
we need a new website/funding/new offices/replacement fluff girls

We have grown from 1 to over 20 contributors within this year and plan to move this website into the 19th century very soon. (we said that last year too)

Here are few things we thought were worth another look for whatever reason:

DEMF 2008 photostream
MCB had 4 press passes from Red Bull for MOVEMENT 2008 and we shot the hell out of the event with video & photos on and off stage but we thought this set from Lawrence Creative was seriously off the hook.

Art Battle 2008
If you missed the Art Battle 2008 at the beginning of the year you missed a great event that not only showcased local art talent in a contest for $1000 in prize money but at the same time gentrified a massive decaying space at the Russell Industrial Center. There was an electric feeling in the air that I hope returns for Art Battle 2009 coming in April (MOTORCITYBLOG sponsered of course)

Looking back - this event was the catalyst to bringing on new contributors to MCB and we tend to talk about Art Battle at least once a week.

Concert of Colors 2008 w/Don Was
MCB was the only non-ACCESS entity provided photographic and video privledges for CoC2008. Although some in town thought the "lineup was boring" it shouldn't always be about how great or not the bands are for an event. Our advice - step outside your little circle and take in something that may not be your bag....the point to the CoC is diversity and not just specifically the music itself.

MCB's Amy Palomar with Paul Hitz in tow shot photos/video of the entire CoC2008 and met up with Don Was at the "private recording session" with Sudan United for Peace over at Rustbelt Studios. My Damn Channel is running tons of footage of the event as well.

Least Attended Show of 2008
MCB's Paul Hitz said he has never been to show in Detroit where NOBODY showed up and thats just what happened to the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre in mid-June 2008 at Lager House Detroit. Now there are probably other bands this has happened to so before you go busting balls remember we were in the middle of a snow storm that night as well as a national holiday/aliens landing/ TSUNAMIs off the Detroit River whatever..check the photos and we always get good feedback from the winners of JCM music giveaways.

FREE VINYL WEEK ON MOTORCITYBLOG
We woke up on Dec 1st and decided to celebrate 4 years of Anti-Blogging with FREE VINYL WEEK ON MOTORCITYBLOG by giving awayy at least 1 piece of vinyl every day all week and it turned into this insane non-stop barrage of local detroit 7" giveaways coupled with free rare new national releases and tickets and CDs- -whatever - look for this newly founded tradition next year around the same time - its fun!

Red Bull Air Race Detroit 2008
MCB had full on press passes for both sides of the river - our shots are second to none AND we interviewed a bunch of the pilots - the only thing we didnt get access to (including the super party on top of the RenCen at Coach Insignia) was a ride in one of those sweet planes!

MCB-VIDEOs:
We have done over 150 videos of various music /art / whatever - Video Interviews with some really cool new and old school artists from Detroit or touring through the motorcity....someone sent us an detarded email with this "...anyone can do what your doing if they want to sneak in a video camera to shows..."

Hey Dooshbag - we have never "snuck" a camera into a show and unless its some local band that could care less what we do we ALWAYS get full press pass for photos and/or video

We have shot video at Live Nation shows all year because we get in with the artists PRIOR to the show and hook it up square. Anyway - here are few to dig on or delete - the good the bad the ugly from local acts but we encourage you to check out some of the video history when you have a chance.
I have listed a few below from local events - skipped all of the touring bands we video interviewed and embedded 3 of my favorite videos
From The Stone House Bar we have Friends of Dennis Wilson and The Ruiners
and then my personal favorite of all time which has been continually voted down by everyone as the worst video ever posted to MCB - so be it!
(Blenny Stoofy (not a real name) at old Scrummage U // somehow the zoom, lighting and noise in the room made serious image capturing changes dynamically on the camera)

Lola Morales photostream
MCB was asked to come document the CD Release show for Lola Morales at the Magic Bag a few months back and MCB's Cherie Stangis came out with a stellar set of shots
Lola Morales is currently playing a series of gigs throughout China and we hope to have her back in the states really soon.

Girl Talk photostream
just check the photostream by Paul Hitz - enough said

Stefani & Stefani Video Interview
not sure what got into us on this day but we knew the mayor was going to get called out with charges for the text message scandal and we just decided to go over to the S&S offices to see if anyone would talk to us---little did we know that they would sit down and talk to us in depth about the most controversial legal battle in Detroit.

NicheJobs gives MCB domain name
We have all heard that phrase "random acts of kindness" right?
well we got one when an unfortunate set of random errors resulted in meeting up with the guy who runs the company who owned the domain name we wanted for years
http://www.motorcityblog.com/ now shoots you over to MCB
He just gave it to us because he likes what we are doing....
you know what ??? We like what he is doing....Need a job?
Check out www.nicheBOARD.com
MC5 40 Year Anniversary Show @ Crofoot
MCB's George Petersmarck snagged one of my favorite sets of the year on a press pass for the Ice Cube show in Mt Clemens Emerald Theatre
MCB's RiazK shoots everywhere and had this to say about the Back CC's show he covered for Savage Productions a few months back - "It was nice to see these guys bring it to town - they were drinking when I met up with them way before the show and didnt stop till the last drop...thats when they got on stage and let it rip....wow! what a show!"

Flag Day 2008
MCB covered 10 events in 1 day - We can do that now with all our contributors no problem but Amy Palomar and myself spent 7 hours and a tank of gas running to hell and a handbasket from one place to the next....I am talking shooting video at the DSO (of the orchestra no less) to a book store event to 2 art galleries to Trumbullplex Theatre (I,Crime Interview) to MOCAD (new detroit music) to Lager House to Corktown Tavern to The Old Miami to Luna Lounge and back to Memphis Smoke...it was insane...we covered punk to porn to classical to country to industrial and all the art and anti-art in between.
No links for you...look up Flag Day and find all this in the archives.

Here is one "Best of" for you from MCB
There are all kinds of others to list but you know what - it takes to long go back and review MCB archives ...forget it and forget 2008 // its over. i will be adding to this post for the entire year...check back from time to time if you like
Big thanks to all of our contributors...you make MCB even better with killer photos / professionalism / coolness
2009 will be awesome for us and you - just make it happen!
We already have press cred for the NAIAS 2009! YEAH!

All the Best in 2009 from the staff of MCB!

The Good The Bad The Ugly in 2009 from MCB

Once again - we do not do lists here on MCB
It goes against our grain and our overall methods here
so that being said we wanted to review our year
and post up a few that needed a second look

After going back over the last 12 months of posts on MCB it sure seems that 2009 was a very long year and it still amazes me that we do as much as we do...we really should be classified as a not for profit and get a cut of the Kresge Fellowship Grants for all we do for our local community.

In regards to contributors we "hired" a bunch but lost a few
and then "fired" a few more to boot...
The need for promotion in this town is obvious as our "roster" grew at an alarming rate and we were able to strengthen most of our existing relationships although we did have to "let go" a few venues and PR companies. Some do not appreciate free promotion but we do not hold a grudge for to long and hopefully we can work it out for the best in the long run.

MCB traveled this year to promote and cover various events
including Rothbury Festival, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame,
Juliette Lewis in Chicago
and Video Interview with DEATH in Austin
for SPIN.

The amount of free stuff we gave away was staggering
tickets, vinyl, CDs, swag, video cameras, frisbees, tshirts
and we even gave away a few cases of Red Bull Cola
and a full press photo pass for CRUE FEST.

We had a few MCB Showcases this year including
the 1st show at the new Alvins
and then kicked off Small's 10 year Anniversary
which was really fun.

Our space at People's Art Festival was larger than the stages
where we donated much of our space to local artists
and was considering the 3rd stage. (It will be bigger in 2010)

This year among the new on MCB:

A semi-weekly comic called SLAW (Something Like A War)
by Detroit John Kalogerakos

Downunder Detroit
by our friends from New Zealand Tall Kiwi chicks

Music on the Brain by Andrew Bender

The Return of Bar Brady Friday Drink Recipes

MONEYPENNY and DC Detroit doing their own thing in style

Do to personal schedules we have lost but have not forgotten
and they pop in every once in a while)
The Nolan Factor by Jeff Nolan
Smitten by Detroit by Anna Hergot

Among my favorites this year were

MCB Lounge at People's Art Festival 2009

As I went through 1900+ posts this weekend it was difficult to pinpoint

So after selecting nearly about 50
I then kindofrandomlywhatever
paired it down to the list below
we covered a LOT of events big and small and am still amazed
that we have the ability to not only get the credentials we acquire
but then deliver the media that we share
with the various "real media" outlets.

We will posting profiles of our contributors soon so look for that
in case you are curious who is who at MCB
and of course come on out to "MCB5"
our 5 year anniversary concert/photo exhibit
at Music Hall Detroit on Sat Jan 16th 2010

PHOTOS: MCB-VIDEO: NAIAS 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit USA

Detroit Muscle is finally back with the new models of Chevy Camaro, For Mustang and Dodge Challenger

We also had a chance to speak with Nick Stone who was hanging out over at the CCS exhibit who filled us in on all the new automotive designs coming out of detroit's creative pool on campus....

As we have mentioned a few times already MOTORCITYBLOG was issued a few press credentials for this years North American International Auto Show (NAIAS 2009) and we were down at Cobo Center on Tuesday to check out all the new rides .....

We are posting these photos from MCB's Amy Palomar now just so you can kill the last 15 minutes as the office BUT the slideshow will be pumped up later tonight AND we have killer video nearly completed and ready to upload before the clock strikes midnight

So we spent most of the day on Tuesday at the NAIAS taking photos/interviews/video and we need to thank our newest pal "Nik" who we met up with over the weekend and gave him a good ol' MOTORCITYBLOG version of a saturday night which included a beer at Garden Bowl - Video Interview at CPOP Gallery Detroit (thanks Adriel/Tom) with Tony Roko (cool detroit artist video on the way)....We then moved on to the Detroit Roller Derby with the Derby Girls and MOTORCITY RAH RAHs (where we shot video and photos of course) and once the bout ended we ended up at The Music Hall/Jazz Cafe for the Russian Ballet and then ending the night at PJ's Lager House for Broadzilla who was playing the Derby Girls afterparty.

MCB's Shane Glenn was hanging from start to finish documenting the night

The point to this was "Nik" is a senior reporter for Germany's largest newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and he contacted MCB to request an interview - we took it to the next level and showed him why Detroit isn't dead yet. Check out the news article he sent us today which ran in his country....check it out!

We got video of the girls from the Detroit Derby & Russian Ballet on the way!

Great to meet/hang with you Nik - Cheers from the MCB staff!

with diverse musical showcase and Detroit music photography exhibit
at Music Hall Jazz Café on Saturday January 16th 2010

MOTORCITYBLOG (Detroit’s Anti-Blog) was started in late 2004
as a regular everyday personal blog and has evolved into a very popular
current events website dedicated to promoting the great talent
in and around the city of Detroit.

MCB has organically grown to include over 20 contributors with talents ranging from live event photography, video capture/editing, and writing but also have helped bridge the gap within the cultural community due to the diversity of events covered by the publication.

Working with local venues and a laundry list of public relation firms they have covered events such as Red Bull Air Races to Presidential Press Conferences to DEMF to NAIAS 2009 with amazing photography, video interviews and promotional efforts that serve both the community as well as the promoters that seek out MCB as a way to reach out into the community to deliver a message.

With their finger on the pulse of this city they are dedicated to finding what makes Detroit stand out. MCB brings forth those elements of the city which might remain hidden otherwise for everyone to enjoy and embrace.

Performer bios:
Ken’s Loud Band - http://www.myspace.com/kensloudband
What would you get if you crossed Warren Zevon with Alex Chilton?
With over 500 songs recorded over the last 20 years, the former Blurbs, Dog & Pony Show & Only A Mother mainstay, Ken Stanley, records with this crack unit (The Loud Band) which includes drumming legend, Doug Gourlay, multi-instrumentalist/Producer, Glenn Calley and bassist, Sean Whitaker. Ken Stanley writes majestic and sometimes, baroque Rock music, which hearkens back to the loud, hooky and literate music of the mid 70’s. Stanley’s amazing songwriting skills will alternately remind you of Bob Dylan, The Jazz Butcher, Dramarama, The Bonzo Dog Band and Mott The Hoople. Don’t let the name fool you, KLB could quite possibly be the best kept secret in Detroit. It must run in the DNA as Stanley’s cousins are The Bluegrass legends, The Stanley Brothers.
The KLB is set to self- release their latest album, “Good For The Bones” in February.

Electric Fire Babies - www.myspace.com/electricfirebabies
Electric Fire Babies are a project from Detroit Michigan that was started & conceived in the Spring 2008 by Lo-Fi Bri (aka CARJACK - a one man electro punk band from Detroit), Justin Audio (guitar player from numerous Detroit bands and Miss N. EFB sound is a hybrid of a variety of music and genres (B-52’s meets LL Cool J meets the Channel 62’s ‘The New Dance Show) Connecting with the audiences & getting people to loosen up & get down is EFB’s primary goal.

Mick Bassett and The Marthas - http://www.myspace.com/mickbassett
"A dark, sinewy romanticism, raspy and full of character – these young spook-folk stalwarts are a force to be reckoned with in the tradition of smoky voodoo flavored minstrels and on-another-planet-auteurs of piano-led folk."

Satori Circus - http://www.myspace.com/satori_circus
In September of 1988, Russell A. Taylor began a journey some said wouldn’t have such longevity, but two decades later Taylor and SATORI CIRCUS are still here. Emerging out of the art punk band of Fugitive Poetry, which he co-founded with his dear friend Rick Maertens, Taylor set out to create something, unbeknownst to him as performance art.

The Lincolns UK - http://www.myspace.com/thelincolnsukdetroit
The Lincolns UK will release their debut album, Hot Blonde Bitches, November 14th at the Park Bar in Detroit. Hailed as “…arena rock through a pignose amp..” The Lincolns UK draw on bratty early British and US punk up through the AC/DC's and Jet's of the world and filter it through the awesome early 'Mats/Minneapolis vibe, but still manage to sound distinctly “Detroit”. The brainchild of artist/actor/power couple Marc and Jennifer Nischan, and filmmaker Mikey Brown, The Lincolns UK (TLUK) is a band that was years in the making. The three friends all met through Planet Ant Theatre, which Mikey managed, where Jennifer wrote, improvised and acted, and for which Marc did art and poster design. All three had separate projects for years however. Marc with Twistin’ Tarantulas, Jennifer with Planet Ant and Second City, and Mikey Brown with Twilight Babies, and numerous indie film projects (Ced’n’Teri, Litterbug). But they kept talking about getting a band together to play the kind of bash-it-out rock and roll they love.

Kinetic Stereokids - http://www.kineticstereokids.net/
Kinetic Stereokids are every bit a product of Flint, Mich., a legendary city perhaps better known for its abandoned auto industry, endless unemployment and unflinching crime rate. What started as childhood friends seeking refuge in basement jam sessions has since developed into an inspired, intelligent and innovative brand of modern rock. With comparisons ranging from Beck to Mogwai, and the cited influence of Can, Elliott Smith and the Beastie Boys, the Kinetic Stereokids' sound is beat-heavy, sample-laden, sonic alchemy.

Blase’ Splee – http://www.blasesplee.com
This Detroit quintet brews a refreshing and varied sound, leaning toward more raucous indie-rock but through a lens that’s both new and classical and structures both traditional and avant-garde (abrupt time signatures take a steady head-bop into a freewheeling romp). Guitars jangle, declarative pianos swoon, percussion goes from strict and walking to banging every pot in the cupboard. Very promising, sort of '60s baroque-pop meets American traditional rock ... maybe some folk, too? Or just rewardingly unclassifiable.

The Pack A.D. Rock Louder Than You

The Pack A.D. are a female rock duo that play relentless, pounding rhythms along with screaming guitars and snarling, heartfelt vocals. As the Pack A.D., guitarist and vocalist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller are good friends that make even better music together. They released their first few records independently, honing their craft with non-stop touring. All the work has paid off with a new release, “Do Not Engage” on Nettwerk Records which features 11 blistering songs that continue to expand their range of hard rock anthems. I caught their spirited live show Friday night at the Pike Room and managed to get a few minutes of Maya and Becky’s time to tell me more about The Pack AD.

MCB: How long have you known each other?
Maya: 8 or 9 years. We became fast friends and then fast band mates.
MCB: You’ve played played Detroit before. Is this your first time playing Pontiac?
Maya: Yes, first time in Pontiac. But we like Detroit, especially downtown. We recorded part of the new album in Detroit.
Becky: We mixed the record here too. We were by Tiger Stadium so we got to watch a game.

MCB: Your last e.p. was a best of from the last few years. How did you pick the tracks?
Maya:  It wasn’t that hard to pick them. I think there were a couple people that had their say on what should be on there. But I think we got what we wanted.
MCB: There’s been a progression of your sound over the last few years, is that apparent on the ep?
Maya: Well, I don’t think we can’t not sound like us. Maybe my drumming has gotten better.
Becky: But there is definitely an evolution in our sound. It still sounds like us.

MCB: I really like your videos!
Becky: That’s because Maya came from a bit of a film background.
Maya:  It seems natural to make videos for our records, and we both like telling stories. We like being goofy, too. Most of our videos are very comical.
MCB: The one I really like is “Take” where you re-create a Gary Numan video (my favorite artist).
Maya: I was on YouTube watching videos for songs I love and I had never seen this one. After seeing it, I thought this video was the best video I had ever seen, so I suggested to Becky that we copy it.
Becky: It was our best homage to Gary Numan. We’re big Numan fans!
Maya: And we got approval from Gary Numan to do it.

MCB:Have you had other members in the band?
Maya: We started as a 4 piece, but it didn’t really work out. We split off and started playing as a 2 piece and never added anyone since. We’ve had thoughts of hiring a bass player.
Becky: I think that’s the most we would ever do. There’s probably some fear it would change the dynamic we have to let someone else into our weirdness.
MCB: You used to tour non-stop…
Maya: We used to, but that’s kind of changed. Last year we only played about 18 shows because we were working on the album. So this is the first time in a while we’re doing some heavy touring.
MCB: Touring seems like a necessity these days…
Maya: Sure, just to make some money, because no one is buying records these days. You have to keep yourself out there or people forget about you. Touring is viable and hard.
MCB: Where’s the most exotic place you have played?
Becky: We played Bogata, twice. It was interesting. We were staying a block away from the venue so we thought we’ll just walk over. But we were told “no, it’s not safe.”
Maya: Our hotel was guarded by dudes with machine guns. It was pretty intense. At the airport I’ve never been security checked so many times. I kept thinking about “Brokedown Palace” which is why I’ll never go to Thailand.

MCB: Becky, how long have you been playing guitar?
Becky: 11 years. I probably learned “Smoke on the Water” first, after that I learned “Where Is My Mind” by the Pixies.
Maya: Drummers don’t get that kind of excitement learning their first song.
MCB: A lot of people think raw, bluesy rock is a guy thing..
Becky: Yes, it’s just not as common because it’s okay for little boys to grow up to be rock star idols and women don’t really get that. I started playing guitar as a hobby and didn’t really think of it going anywhere. But it’s gone well so far. We’re making a living at it, which is more than anyone could really ask for.
