RIP - Robert Graham

Hall-of-Fame Sculptor Robert Graham Dies

The Joe Louis Fist in downtown Detroit is one of many sculptures by this hall of famer.

"Born in Mexico City in 1938, Graham was educated at San Jose State College and the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition to his well-known public works in Los Angeles and Washington, Graham created the Joe Louis Memorial in Detroit, honoring the boxer with a 24-foot bronze monument in the shape of a massive fist and forearm, suspended from a pyramid structure. Jazz giants Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker were memorialized with bigger-than-life sculptures in New York City and Kansas City, Mo., respectively."

WILD AT HEART - Holidays Dec 22nd + 29th 2008

Hey Kirk-I am out on vacation but still posting to MCB - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart - December 22nd 2008
Sorry for the delay but like some flight delays, I am currently on vacation and just got around to getting near a computer. Speaking of flight delays, if you are flying this year, make sure to get to the airport on time. I left for Florida on Sunday and had a 2:30PM flight. I wanted to get to the airport at 10AM while my buddy who was nice enough to take me to the airport was asking why I wanted to get there that early and was asking about a 12:00PM arrive time at the airport.
When flying I rather get somewhere early than get delayed and risk missing a flight esp with all the security checks. Besides, I brought 9 books with me (I am starting the fourth today).

Well, luckily I convinced him to get me there early esp with the call for icy conditions the later it got. We arrived just before 11AM and they put me on an early flight leaving at 12. Later, after I arrived in Orlando, my parents told me that my 2:30PM flight got delayed due to icy conditions
to 5:50PM which means I would've been stuck in Atlanta overnight since I would have missed the last connecting flight to Orlando by that point. So if you are flying this holiday, get to the airport early since you never know when an opportunity will open up. If you have the time traveling through the Atlanta International Airport go to the Zimbabwe scupture display located on the tram level between terminals A and T. Here you will see around 20 large scuptures
by 12 artists from Zimbabwe (the name in the local Shona language actually means "stone houses" which relate to the giant rocks that rise up in the hills outside the capital of Harare). The sculptures relate heavily to the themes of family, the relationhip of man to nature and to
the countries spiritualaity. I esp liked the scupture of the Secretary Bird but all the works have a strong resonance that should be enjoyed if you have the time.

My first day was 61 degrees down here with temps going into the high 70's, low 80's for the rest of the week which is great relief from the cold temps of Detroit. That Friday snow storm really upset my plans though the WXOU party at the Crofoot did go on and the lovely people
from Rock N Rummage brought a lot of cool items for holiday shopping.

The music was great and it was a good time despite only 17 of 51 people showing up due to the weather. I also had to miss the premiere of The Spirit which I have been dying to see for months (and the fact the TV stations plays the trailer every hour or so). I did mange to do an
interview with Morris Chestnut which will air on my show the first Thursday of Jan (88.3FM or www.wxou.org) concerning his new movie Not Easily Broken (reviews of that and Doubt should be out next Monday's blog). I have a few favorite things to do in Florida and one includes hanging out and shopping at Downtown Disney (or Disney Village). I always take in the Art Of Disney store which contains the high end art of Disney including various paintings and scuptures. My favorite new pieces are the art deco styled posters for the Incredibles, Ratatouille and Wall-E and a couple of ceramic dragons (one inspired by Mulan and the other Pete's Dragons). My parents got me a statue of Jack from the Nightmare Before Christmas for Christmas.

The best part though was the new concept restaurant, T Rex Cafe. Basically think Rainforest Cafe but with a dinosaur theme. The outside has some cartoonish characters and some skeletal remains which is cool but inside is amazing. The bar area is set up like the sea with giant
jellyfish and hugh octopus over the bar. Next is the fire room with Pteradactyls and T Rex with a volcano theme. There is a foresty room with Triceratops, Apatosaurus and other dinosaurs. I sat in the Ice Cave which is guarded by a Wooly Mammoth. They even have a fake earthquake going on every so often. If you like dinosaurs, this is a cool restaurant to go to. It is pricey (this is Disney property after all) but the ribs are good and remember, you are going for the experience and not to save money. This area also contains the House of Blues, the Cirque du Soleil show
"La Nouba" (I went to this last year and my whole family enjoyed it), Bongo's Cuban Cafe (owned by Gloria Estefan), the LEGO Inagination Center, the Virgin Megastore (my favorite place to shop) and all the disney stuff you can buy. I hope everyone is having a safe and sound holiday week. Merry Christmas everyone and I'll be back next Monday where I'll talk about
SeaWorld and who knows what else.

Wild At Heart - December 29th 2008
I am now halfway through my vacation and it has been wonderful (81 degrees today). I hate to think what the temperature might be up there and I have a bit of time to not think about it (esp when I think about unburying my truck).

One of my favorite places down here is SeaWorld and I hope to have
someone from the park on my show come February to talk about some of their programs and new features like the new Manta rollercoaster currently being build. Everyone does Top Ten lists so in that spirit, here are my top 10 things about Seaworld.

10) The Waterfront At SeaWorld - a nice stretch of sidewalk covered
with shops. This area also has frequent sidewalk musicians and has a
good view of the fountain shows.

9) Manatee Rescue - a nice area which contains endangered manatees
which have been rescued from the waterways of Florida. Most have been
injured by boaters who didn't see them and probably didn't care. A nice
reminder of the good work SeaWorld does for conservation efforts.

8) Blue Horizons - this is the dolphin show which is getting kind of
old when we get to the divers and some of the other non-dolphin stuff
but when the dolphins are on stage, this show is amazing.

7) Wild Artic (Beluga Whales) - yes you have the Walrus and Polar
Bears and a movie which starts your journey (currently Polar Express),
but the underwater viewing area for the Beluga Whales is one of my
favorites. This gentle looking creatures are graceful underwater and
have almost human looks of playfulness. I always try to spend about a
1/2 hour here to watch them and if you are in a hurry they can hide for
a couple of minutes so be patient.

6) Shark Encounter - this amazing underwater walkway is a structural
marvel but it is the shark viewing that makes this fun as well as some
of the tanks full of Lionfish and Leafy Seadragons.

5) Pacific Point Perserve - I never thought a sea lion habitat would
be so engaging but they did a wonderful job putting this together. You
can watch sea lions and harbor seals frolic and feed them if you like.
The design gives you many good viewing areas and their are always a
couple looking for attention. If you do feed them, make sure to use a
strong arm or the birds will intercept.

4) Journey To Atlantis - a water ride which is guaranteed to get you
wet no matter where you sit on this flume ride. It has some nice set up
with mermaids and similar stuff but the first drop is cool and the end
twists are great fun. Make sure to stop in the gift shop on the way out
and check out the aquarium here which has luminous jellyfish and a nice
tank both about you and in the floor.

3) The Kraken - a smooth and exciting roller coaster set towards the
back of the park. It is a very good ride and worth checking out. Also,
after the ride, the Kraken eggs someimes contain electric eels inside
them. Look closely!

2) Underwater Dolphin Viewing Area - the best animal view area in the
park and lets you watch the playful antics of this exquisite species.
No where do you feel as close to the animals as you do here. I have
spent up to an hour in this area which has nonstop action.

1) Shamu Stadium - One year I was at the park by myself and watched 7
Shamu shows (most in the splash zone) in one day. Now I just go to
watch other people run away from the water coming at them from the
killer whales which are the most beautiful animals on the planet - IMHO.
This is the reason you come to SeaWorld. Nothing compares to seeing
these animals in action. When they jump in the air and come down
splashing, it takes your breath away.

OK, so these are the 10 places you need to go to if you ever make it
to SeaWorld in Olando. I suggest eating at Smoky Creek (great ribs) or
Hospitality Deli at the Anheuser Busch center (good turkey sandwhiches).
If you have the money, do the Dinner with Shamu which is a nice buffet
dinner.

In other news, I got a couple of movies to talk about. First, "Not Easily Broken" is a relationship movie starring Morris Chestnut and Taraji Henson as Dave and Claire Johnson. Hoping to be a professional athlete, Dave gets hurt his rookie season and is forced to take a job doing construction. His wife becomes a cutthroat real estate agent. He helps underprvaledged children by coaching a baseball which she wishes he would give up. Things are stressful but take a real trn when Claire gets involved in a car accident. Mom moves in and life gets miserable
with neither side truly understanding the other and an affair might be brewing as both sides question their marriage. Can they find themselves and reestablish themselves before the break apart forever? This movie really looks at what true happiness, as well as success and love, is.
The only failing is the young son of the woman Dave might have an affair with (a little too much that is not needed) but the movie is otherwise very good and should make a good date flick. Grade: B-.

Next is "Doubt", my favorite movie so far of 2008. Set in the 1960's Bronx at a Catholic School, Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) gets a report from one of her teachers (Amy Adams) that Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is spending a little too much time with the school's first
African American child. The Sister and Father go head-to-head over a situation which might be either a) child molestation or b) a priest just trying to be a good guy. The conflicts gets big and despite Sister Aloysius apparent victory, their is still the remains of doubt that come
into the forefront. That is what makes it suh a powerful piece. We don't know if he is quilty or not (actually playwright John Patrick Shanley only told Hoffman if his character commited the deed and left the rest of the cast not knowing) and we don't care because the script
is tight and the acting sublime. See this film. Grade: A+.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and make sure you have a fun and safe New Years. That goes double for Lions fans who lived through 0-16 this year. Time to start those resolutions.

See you next year!

Kinetic Stereokids @ P.J’s Lager House 12.16.08

This is overDue: to the blizzard that pounded the city the last week, amongst other time consuming endeavors, ahem, work and finals for instance, I haven't been able to write this out till now. Sorry all. --- Now, here we go...

Lately, I've been on this listening trend of indulging in "slow-to chaotic- back to slow" musically arranged bands. Music and bands that are dubbed, "epic", "melodic", "ambient" or reign an atmosphere of haunting melodies and hint toward apocalyptic times. Said such examples of bands would be: God is an Astronaut, The Mercury Program, Boards of Canada, Mogwai, Godspeed you Emperor!, Explosions in the Sky and music produced by John Murphy.

So what does these dynamic sounding bands have to do with seeing the Kinetic StereoKids last Tuesday night at P.J's Lager House in Detroit? yes, what is the fucking correlation you ask...

I came and saw what I assumed to be another independent post-rock, experimental band but I was left with a flabbergasted, "DEER IN HEADLIGHTS" stare, mind fucked euphoria, numbness which can only be attributed to the fact, that yes, I felt a significant musical experience that night. Like Greek scholar Archimedes; reportedly proclaimed, "Eureka!" after discovering volume displacement; I too felt after listening to Kinetic StereoKids live I made my own little victorious discovery and more so, a resonating deep appreciation for their musical cause. AND THAT, my friends, is why I'm on this musical tangent of bands mentioned above. To sustain and enhance that musical glow of hearing the Kinetic Stereokids.

I've been writing this disarranged entry with the KSK's song, "cold and tired" on repeat on my iPod. This song permeates significance because last Tuesday when the snowstorm loomed over Detroit only a 2/5 members made it in for the show. Even so, with absent band members the quality and performance wasn't hindered in anyway. With the accomplice of co-member Lisa providing subtle percussion sounds with the morracas, singer, guitarist Justin and guitarist Matt proceeded to tailor out an intimate KSK set on the stage of P.J's Lager House.

There was only a handful or so of people watching from the crowd, due to the impending snowstorm outside, but even so the atmosphere was fulfilling and cozy. Justin, with his genuine and lulling voice and Matt with his captivating, repetitive guitar riffs serenaded the crowd into a "bedtime story" hypnotic mood. Remember those MTV unplugged acoustic set series on television back in the 90's?

Yeah, it was kinda like that. I was tempted at one point to bundle up and trek to my car to get out a blanket so I could sit more comfortably on the floor near the stage and look up at the band in my childlike curiosity.

Near the end of the set a member from the band, Teedo, that played just as magnificently before KSK, came over and said he felt KSK sounded a bit like the minimalist band "Low". I'd shook my head in "yes" couldn't agree more. KSK brought something true and honest to the stage that night while snowflakes dropped softly among this ruined city. KSK brought beauty and light. It was a tremendously delightful night!

Excerpts from an interview at the Lager House bar with Lisa, Justin and Matt from KSK for Anna's own personal blog as well as a collaboration for
http://www.motorcityblog.net/ :

Lisa Semerad: Back-up vocals, percusssion
Matthew Wolverton: Guitar, Bass, Syth
Justin Ford: Vocals, Samples, Guitar, Keyboards, Percussion, Snacks

(?? lol, yes! the sound of masticating Cheetos!)
Members not in attendance:
2 playing footsie with the Abdominal Snowman (dave/tony)

MCB: So you guys started this band, when?

KSK: 1998

MCB: Give me three songs/albums/bands you're listening to in your life right now.

KSK:Justin: Who-Live @ Leeds
"Didn't I Blow your Mind?"-by: The Delfonics
Bruce Springsteen "Nebraska"
Matt: Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Bruce Springsteen "Nebraska" (followed suite with Justin)
Super Furry Animals

KSK: "What albums are you listening to now?"

MCB/me: "Anything by God is an Astronaut"

Justin: "God is an Ass?" (confusion)

me: (laughing) "could be, no no, God is an Astronaut"

MCB: "It's random but what shows do you miss most from Nickelodeon before it turned into this sit-com crap?"

KSK "Double Dare"!
"You Can't Do That on Television"
(at this point the interview derails, Justin makes reference to a house he burnt down at the age of 14, nights of driving back and forth from Grand Rapids, getting lost in St. John, MI)

KSK/Matt: (talks about smoking)"....Smoke all the time, I used to roll my own cigarettes-now just smoke camel lights-Hate the new blend, love the old blend from camel"

The interview turned into a discussion about board games and best albums of all time before KSK had to pack up and brave the cold temperatures back to Flint. As I accompanied them out to the parking lot a sudden urge to construct snow angels overcame us. This is what I leave you with. Everyone do a snow angel. Make your mark on the world. xoxo - Anna

Sisters Lucas 7" Release Show - PJ's Lager House - Sat Dec 27th

Sisters Lucas 7" Release Show
w/Gardens, Aran Ruth

Saturday December 27th 2008 -10pm

The Sisters Lucas (that's twins Julie and Loretta Lucas) celebrate their first official 7" release on Bellyache Records this Saturday night!

These gals will steal your heart and your ears with their beautiful and captivating music. This is folk music for the modern era-- a true appreciation for simpler times past meets that odd Motor City glamor in a way that can only be pulled off by this pair.

The 7" is entitled "To What and What Of" and will be available for purchase at the show.

Gardens are Detroit's leading avant garde group. Lo-fi, distorted and immeasurably catchy, Gardens will blow you away with their energy and exponentially increasing popularity and artistry. It's like The Velvet Underground, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Sonics had a musical baby.

Aran Ruth is a local dreamer of unusual talent and thought. Ruth summons an impossible world into existence, then maps it out three minutes at a time. The world depicted in her songs feels distressingly unsafe. Everything is temporary in Ruth's songs; there's sunshine, but it casts tall shadows large enough to hide monsters. Voices murmur in dark cellars and there's safety in the clearing but black fuzz ogres lurk in the forest nearby.

Electric Fire Babies (EFB) - Lager House - Fri Dec 26th

Detroit's own The High Strung has returned from their fourth annual National Public Library tour and is stronger than ever! Their set will feature some new tunes, penned this year.

Same Sex Marriage is some familiar faces with a secret name... see if you can figure it out.. if you're better at riddles than I am (and you are, because I suck at them), then you know you should be at this show.

EFB features members from Carjack and Siddhartha. (Plus "Miss N" )

Battling Siki is the band that not many know about but everyone knows a member of. You may recognize such names as 'Eddie Baranek' (The Sights, The Drinking Problem, Shotgun Wedding) and accurately equate them with good time rock'n'roll and kickass stage presence. From foot-stomping grooves to shivering ballads, Battling Siki's performances are completely energetic.

MCB favorite Electric Fire Babies have a few shows coming up including a "Day After Christmas Show" that is sure to knock your stockings off the wall....

EFB is by far the best new band to come out in 2008 - check the video we snagged from earlier in the year up top and see all the details for the show down below....they will also have a CD release show sometime in Feb 2009

MITTENFEST 3 / 2008 - Elbow Room YPSI - Friday Dec 26th - Sunday Dec 28th

Ypsilanti to host Mittenfest III
A 3-venue, 27-band holiday benefit music festival

An ode to the winter season, our hand-shaped peninsula, the local
music community, and non-profit youth writing center 826michigan, the
third-annual Mittenfest is set to fill the Elbow Room with
over 21 hours of music and holiday cheer.

Things get kicked-off on Friday, December 26, where the lineup is
anchored by cello-augemented indie-folk-pop juggernaut CANADA,
harmonic crowd-participation enthusiasts THE POP PROJECT, and local
son FRED THOMAS (Saturday Looks Good to Me, Flashpapr, City Center),
who returns from Brooklyn for a much-anticipated homecoming set.

Also hailing from the east coast, CREAKY BOARDS play Brian
Wilson-influenced pop songs but are best known for the international
notoriety they gained last summer after accusing Coldplay of stealing
one of their songs (via a popular viral video)

Rounding out the first night is electro wunderkind DEASTRO, indiepop
buzz band LIGHTNING LOVE, psych-shoegaze Lansingites FIELDS OF
INDUSTRY, antifolk jester and puppeteer PATRICK ELKINS, and young
Upper Peninsula duo THIS IS DEER COUNTRY. DUSTIN KRCATOVICH (Actual
Birds) spins hot tunes between sets.

The festivities continue on Saturday, December 27, with popular
accordion-cartography rockers GREAT LAKES MYTH SOCIETY topping a bill
that includes the Grand Rapids-based nautical sprawl of THE MIGHTY
NARWHALE and MATT JONES & THE RECONSTRUCTION, an amplified version of
a usually-intimate and intricate songwriter. Detroit faux fantasy duo
CHAMPIONS OF BREAKFAST return with cardboard instruments in hand,
one-man insanity CARJACK and the pop sounds of youngsters PRUSSIA, as
well as shoegaze-country veterans DABENPORT, the world-weary songs of
THAT'S HIM! THAT'S THE GUY!, and the debut of THE INTERRUPTED LOVERS,
featuring ex-Freer and Canada personnel. JEREMY PETERS (Quite
Scientific Records, Ghostly International) will DJ.

But wait, there's more! Sunday, December 28, things end on a folkier
note, with the epic Neutral Milk Hotel-meets-bluegrass sounds of
FRONTIER RUCKUS, the genius of local songwriting hero CHRIS BATHGATE,
and the twang of MISTY LYN & THE BIG BEAUTIFUL. The rural punk-stomp
of BLACK JAKE & THE CARNIES, Scott Sellwood (Saturday Looks Good to
Me) project DRUNKEN BARN DANCE, and the experimental sounds of HALOLOS
add to the bill's diversity. Solo sets by JOSEPH PATRICK SCOTT
(Canada) and TIMOTHY MONGER (Great Lakes Myth Society), as well as
returning Ann Arbor expat EMILY BATE fill-out the festival. DJ JEFF
OWENS (Ghostly International) will provide inter-set music.

All proceeds from the entry fees ($5 at the door each night, $12 3-day
wristband available at Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair, 115 E.
Liberty St., Ann Arbor) benefit 826michigan,
a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting
students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing
skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
Their services are structured around a belief that great leaps in learning
can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills
are fundamental to future success.

MCB-Artist of the Month Spotlight - Josh Buckenberger

We decided to start featuring various artists on MOTORCITYBLOG once a month with the help of MCB's Derek Ecker - DE is a recent CCS Graduate who in addition to his own efforts out on the streets wanted to put the spotlight on detroit artists here on MCB.

Enjoy!

Detroit Featured Artist: Josh Buckenberger
Written By. Derek Ecker
Photography by Chelse Schneider

Recently MCB hooked up with Detroit artist Josh Buckenberger at c-pop galleries cpopur2unity show where he had a few works of art on display and was kind enough to let us shoot him some questions.

MCB-Ok Josh, for those who don't know you let's hear the backstory. Where are you from, and
what would you say was your source of inspiration for getting into the arts.

Josh Buckenberger-I'm originally from the hospital, as are most children. I grew up in Wyandotte as a wee lad. When I was 19, I moved out of the ol' parental hut and have bounced around the Detroit area since. I've lived in Downriver, the Upper East side, Southwest, Midtown, Oak Park, and RO. It's a lot of places to live and requires quite a bit of moving (which I have become quite efficient at) but I haven't found my own place yet.
The initial spur for my artistic endeavors was brought upon by myself. As a child I had an innate talent for drawing. It was something enjoyable to do and brought about a sense of pride in knowing that I made something that I would want to look at. Following my childhood, art receded into the background for several years until later in my adolescence where I would pick it up again as a communicative tool to deal with my long-standing depression. Most of my work at the time dealt with plenty of dark brooding personal and relationship issues. I would look to other artists to get a sense of how they accomplished something similar and it gave me motivation to work on my own art.

MCB-Your work tends to be dark and mysterious, has it always had that errie feel to it or is it something you evolved over time?

Josh Buckenberger-I happen to think that my work is dark and eerie only because of circumstance and laziness. Others may disagree, but if I were more prolific, I'm sure you'd see some brighter and happier images emerge. Don't get me wrong, I love the dark side of the spectrum; I'm naturally a night person because of my light sensitivity. With my work, I love implementing the use of chiaroscuro and working from the dark to the light. Because of the way that I work, I've been told that I "come from the dark side".

MCB-Now I know your a huge fan of oils, are you ever going to step out of the dark ages and start using acrylics?

Josh Buckenberger-Acrylics aren't bad, I just don't prefer them. I do work rather fast when I get into my rhythm, so maybe I should use some acrylics once in awhile. I use oils because I happen to have a lot of them. I've been working with them much longer than acrylics. There is something about the delicious consistency of oils, not to mention the incredible strength of colors. I could go on and on about oils, but I'll spare you the technical junk this time.

MCB- Is it true that your beard is the real mastermind behind all of your works?

Josh Buckenberger-Just like Chuck Norris, I have another fist behind my beard. Except mine holds a brush

MCB-As an emerging artist what is you opionion of Detroit's current gallery scene, and where do you see it going in the future?

Josh Buckenberger-As far as the Detroit gallery scene is specifically concerned, I'm not too sure. I'm still at the very beginning of my artistic career. CPOPor2nity is my second show. Ask me again when I've been to a few more galleries.

MCB-Whats on the horizons for you? Any new projects in the works for Josh Buckenberger

Josh Buckenberger-I'm open to doing commission work for the time being. Take a look at my website @ http://www.artuo.us/ to get an idea of what it is that I do and for contact information regarding commissions.

FREE EP from Jonathon Visger "Trilobite Trash"

Mason Proper frontman Jon Visger is giving away a free digital EP called Trilobite Trash under his new solo alias, Bug Lung Baby. Visger, who performed and arranged all the music himself on the four-song set, uses this vehicle to delve further into experimental pop and electronic sounds. Taking inspiration from hip-hop production, he used looping, sampling, and chopping along with programmed beats on an MPC Pad to complement the live band elements. The EP is available now through RCRD LBL right HERE

BUG LUNG BABY
Trilobite Trash

Trilobite Trash is the second solo EP Michigan-based Jonathan Visger has put out this year, and his first under the pseudonym Bug Lung Baby. He's also the vocalist and primary songwriter in Mason Proper, who finished and released their sleeper hit sophomore album Olly Oxen Free on Dovecote Records in September. He decided to release the new EP for free through RCRD LBL.

Why the new pseudonym "Bug Lung Baby?"

Jon explains:

"I think when people see somebody's normal, boring name as the title of the musician, they instantly think acoustic guitar, vocals, stripped down kind of coffee house stuff. My stuff doesn't sound anything like that. Plus I have a bad relationship with my name for some reason. Bug Lung Baby conjures up something much more tangible and interesting to me. I would want to know what that sounded like."

Why release this music for free when it is clearly worth sixteen million dollars?

"This EP is a Christmas present from me to you, and a thank you for listening. This last year I have had it reaffirmed to me why I do this. It's for the people out there to whom this music speaks, especially those of you who tell me so. It's about trying really hard to bring something new to the world, and finding people who are looking for that particular thing.

Moreso than ever before, I feel free to experiment and grow and really plumb the depths of what I can do, and that's because some of you have shown me you'll grow with me. I can make mistakes on the way. I don't have it all figured out. I'm not a master at this stuff, I'll always be a student. So thanks for helping to teach me."

TONIGHT!!! - 6th Annual Home for the Holidaze Benefit Show - Corktown Tavern

THE 6th ANNUAL “HOME FOR THE HOLIDAZE” BENEFIT
The holiday season is now upon us and it is time once again for "Home for the Holidaze” the 6th annual singer-songwriter music showcase and charity drive for area homeless shelters.
The event brings together local singer-songwriters and former Detroit musicians who are home for the holiday season.

It is a chance for them to perform for a good cause as the proceeds from the event will go towards food donations to area homeless shelters. The day after the show is spent at Costco buying cases of soup and various canned food with the proceeds. The food is then distributed to soup kitchens and food pantries in the downtown Detroit area. Pet food donations are also collected each year as well.

This year the singer-songwriters will be performing with their bands instead of the quieter acoustic only shows of years past.

The show is on FRIDAY, DEC. 19th 2008 at 9pm.
The venue is Corktown Tavern located at 1716 Michigan Avenue in Detroit.
Please call 313-964-5103. 21 & over are welcome.

MCB travels to Columbus Ohio for EODM

MCB's MoneyPenny headed down to Columbus OH for Eagles of Death Metal on Wednesday - here is how it went:

Nice traveling weather, eh?

We are finally home and back to work. The show was fantastic and we had a great time. It was a VERY sold out venue and it was pretty big, like a Fillmore. Packed to the rafters...impressive.

Although the night was a lot of fun, we did not get access to the band like we had hoped. We got there early and weren't on the list. I called Louie (EODM Tour manager) and he sent someone to let us in within minutes and had them give us our MCB/EODM photo passes. I got to talk to him and Dave Catching for about two minutes during an opening act and then they disappeared to go prepare for the show. When the show started at first, I was right up front, snapping away. But the crowd got crazy really quick and they kicked all of the photographers out. Security's rules, no choice but to go all the way to one side or the other. All the other photogs just left but I took as many pictures as I could from the best spot I could find. My assistant took several shots because he is much taller and could get above the crowd and the sound equip. With the oversold/rowdy dude/bro crowd it was very difficult to get up close for shots without getting our heads ripped off. We got what we could.

Louie popped up during the show to ask us to come backstage after and hang out for our candid band photos, so I figured I would just make up for my lost photo opp then. But after the show, some asshole radio station had mobbed the place with dudes/bros (CDC 101).

I guess the band had hung out at their station all day and now a big gang of guys wanted into the party. Louie tried to get rid of them and told the crowd that only ladies were allowed, and the guys threw a hissy fit. So we all crammed into a little room to wait for the band, and Louie spent his time arguing with the people from this fucking radio station. None of the band was being told to come up while this mess was going on, and Jesse's girlfriend had shown up at this show.

So the band went back to the bus and never came back out (except for BOC, who came up to dance with the girls). We stood there for an hour or more feeling like assholes in a crowd of drugged-up teenage girls after Louie got rid of the radio jerks, but the party was over by then. We helped Louie carry his stuff back to the bus around 2am and we peeked inside but the band was behind closed doors and it was just crew partying with girls.

We couldn't even get in somewhere for last call at that point, so we packed it in for the night and went to bed.

Yesterday was a treacherous drive home and we witnessed many accidents, it was good to get back to the house. Not so much good to get back to work today...but reality is like that sometimes. I will go through my photos and send you the best of what I got tonight when I get home.

I really thought it would go down differently, but an EODM show is never a loss.

Cheers to you! Happy Friday!

FREE CD: Winter Gloves' "Let Me Drive"

FREE CD to the 1st emailer who asks - cd IS GONE MAN!

Check out the EP's title track "Let Me Drive" here
Check out the band's cover of "Someone Great" (by LCD Soundsystem) here

Montreal’s fertile music scene has given birth to a brand new gem in the form of Winter Gloves, a band destined for success far beyond the native Canadian borders that first embraced it.

Named “Best New Artist of 2008” by iTunes Canada, the foursome are ready to descend upon the US with their keyboard-heavy, rhythmically-propulsive pop compositions. The guys will first introduce themselves with the three-song, digital-only Let Me Drive EP – which features early versions of several tracks from their forthcoming debut full-length, about a girl.

The quartet, who endearingly dub themselves “glock-rock” for their use of the oft-ignored glockenspiel, began as the solo project of Charles F. (lead singer/songwriter/wurlitzer). Charles created the early Winter Gloves recordings that make up Let Me Drive EP in his own home using a single microphone. The project soon evolved into a four-piece ensemble that also includes Pat Sayers (drums), Vincent Chalifour (synth), and Jean-Michel Pigeon (guitar/glockenspiel).

Let Me Drive EP explodes right out of the gates with the title track. The song doesn’t waste a second in getting bodies on the dancefloor with frenzied drums and infectious keys. Soon, angular guitars stab and ominous synth lines hum while Charles wails with a plea for control, singing “I thought you were ultimately right / I know you’re not / Come on just let me drive.” On “I Can’t Tell You,” his voice alternates from carrying a touch of gritty seasoning to shifting into elegant falsetto. Closing track “Piano 4 Hands” ends the EP with a warm, inviting wurlitzer melody and Charles lets out ghostly coos in between his seductive verses. This trio of songs serve as a mere appetizer for the forthcoming main course, about a girl, on which the band expands its scope and unleashes some of its best melodies.

Winter Gloves has also recorded a cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “Someone Great” – boiling down the epic dance track into a compact two minutes that highlight the song’s most memorable bits.

“A Polka and Pop Pontiac Christmas” with the Polish Muslims - Crofoot Ballroom - Sat Dec 20th

“A Polka and Pop Pontiac Christmas” with the Polish Muslims
Plus Stewart Francke and The Kielbasa Kings
The Crofoot Ballroom on Saturday Dec. 20th 2008

Partial Proceeds to Benefit Gilda’s Club
Largest Kielbasa Wreath Unveiled!

With the Holiday season upon us, children's thoughts turn to sugarplums, xbox 360s, and...the polka! Yes, it's that time of year again, and this season it's metro Detroit's favorite polka rock parodists, The Polish Muslims at The Crofoot Ballroom, (1 S. Saginaw Street, Pontiac, Ph: 248-858-9333) on Saturday, December 20. As has been the tradition their last few Christmas season shows, their very special guests will be blue-eyed soulster Stewart Francke. Opening the show will be the Kielbasa Kings, an anything but traditional polka band, whose polka version of the Violent Femmes "Blisters in the Sun" has made them local favorites.

Partial proceeds from the show will benefit Gilda's Club of Royal Oak, a free, non-residential cancer support community.

And as if that's not enough we’ll be spicing up the evening with the unveiling of “The World’s (we think!) Largest Kielbasa Christmas Wreath,” generously sponsored by the Kowalski Sausage Company.

Doors are at 8 p.m., and all ages are welcome to attend. Advance Tickets are $8 /$10 the day of the show. Tickets are now available at the Crofoot box office or at www.ticketweb.com.

ABOUT THE POLISH MUSLIMS:
The Polish Muslims have been a Detroit/Hamtramck institution for 27 years! Nowhere in metro Detroit can you feast your ears on anything droller, more wry, more musically comedic than the Polish Muslims, an eight-piece band whose vibrant renderings of classic pop and punk songs satirize their own Polish heritage with an ever-provincial eye on Hamtramck.

Since their inception in the 1980s, The Polish Muslims have managed to blaze a trail of sold out shows, radio and TV appearances and dozens of outdoor summer concerts, all without taking themselves too seriously. From live simulcasts on Detroit's WCSX, WDET, WNIC AND Windsor's 89X, to their local Emmy nominated music video on WXYZ-ABC, The Polish Muslims are a beloved Detroit music tradition.

FREE CD: Morrissey "Years of Refusal"

MCB will have a freebie copy of Morrissey’s “Years of Refusal” to give away to the 3rd reader who emails us now - that had to be the fastest contest ever - we have a winner!

“Years of Refusal” to be released February 17, 2009 on Attack/Lost Highway.

This will be Morrissey’s first studio album since 2006’s UK #1 “Ringleader of the Tormentors”.

In February, Morrissey will begin the US leg of his world tour that includes rare intimate club dates.

The late Jerry Finn, who previously worked on 2004’s critical and commercial smash “You Are the Quarry”, produced “Years of Refusal” which is the last album he worked on. The single “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, which Morrissey debuted during his sold out 2007 world tour, will precede the album. Long time band members Boz Boorer, Jesse Tobias, Matt Walker, and Solomon Walker play on the album, which also features a contribution from Jeff Beck on the track “Black Cloud”.

Morrissey is often recognized as the most important British musician of his generation. The New York Times recently stated, ”Morrissey isn’t just any singer: he has become one of the defining rock stars of the past few decades by virtue of his grand voice, his grander songs, and his charming habit of playing with melodrama”. His influence is felt worldwide through the countless artists that cite him as their primary inspiration. “Years of Refusal” is a masterful work that finds Morrissey and the band at their best with a muscular sound and the inimitable voice and lyrics of a legend.

Detroit Artist Julie Fournier offers Deep Discounts to Holiday Art Buyers - Smiling Eyes Studios @ Russell Industrial Center

If you are looking for a homegrown solution to your "lack of art" problem

MCB favorite Smiling Eyes Studios over at Russell Industrial Center is having a pretty decent sale on 2008 artwork through December 31st....

Check out the website here and read a little about the gal behind the brush below:

A little about Julie Fournier - Founder of Smiling Eyes Studio - Detroit

Born in Detroit in 1965, Julie's work is shaped and influenced by modern American culture (i.e.: the cold war and it's end, the birth of cable television, the explosion of the computer age (with it's impact on art and design), changes in her hometown since her birth, and the feminist movement).

Her work explores the immense impact these events have on our lives, our psyches and our relationships with each other. In 1997 Julie founded SmilingEyes Studio, a professional fine arts studio, so she could dedicate herself to pursuing her career as an artist. Although she quit school at 18 to raise her first child, in 2005 she finally achieved a lifelong goal and graduated college (from Wayne State University, obtaining a degree in Industrial Design with honors, Cum Laude). I

n 2007 she achieved another lifelong goal and settled into a large studio to pursue painting full time. Known by many for her oil paintings, she is far from satisfied practicing one discipline; Julie considers herself to be a multi-media artist.Neo Realism best describes Julie's style. Often overlooked aspects of daily life inspire her. This central concept can be found in the many different media she uses to rediscover the banal or forgotten in all its innate beauty. Her graphite drawings isolate objects in minute detail, focusing attention on such sights as the intricate lines in a pair of blue jeans.

By painting glassware she utilizes the metaphor of the transparent vessel and, through a playful yet defined sprinkling of color and shape, turns the utilitarian form into a fuller sensual experience. The stained glass mosaics and painted furniture artwork she does often utilize found objects, bringing society's discards to center stage. The subjects she chooses for her oil paintings are taken from everyday modern life, challenging traditional notions of beauty, social class and human interaction.Julie's vision is built on her ability to see things that the crowd has passed by in its haste to move on to the next sensation.

Focusing on the missed opportunity, the bypassed alternative, the meaning and wonder working within subjects or moments, Julie's work is accessible by way of conveying what her artist's eye has seen: capturing moments and sensations and freezing them in time so they can be shared. Ultimately Julie's work is about focusing the viewer's attention on relationships within the world around them.Currently Julie is working full time as an artist and freelance designer. When she's not at her studio, Julie plays pool, wrenches on her classic Mustang, or pinstripes cars under the name "Dee Striper".

FREE MP3s: Dylan Connor // Josiah Leming // DREIDEL // DeVotchka

Dylan Connor Album Release: Breakaway Republic - January 2009!
Check out Dylan Connor's "Breakaway And Burn" mp3 here:

In 2004, having returned to the East Coast, famed producer Bryce Goggin
(Spacehog, Pavement, Nada Surf, Lemonheads, Phish, Apples In Stereo, too
many to name...), invited Connor to Trout Recording in Brooklyn after
hearing some of his signature 4-track demos. Stripped of the heavy
instrumentation and bed of distortion, only himself to harmonize
with...Connor and Goggin emerged with the debut solo effort "Plug in." The
songs, naked except for splashes of Bryce's keyboards, percussion, and
effects, received an overwhelming response from the public at large and
diehard M.Headphone fans alike. He supported "Plug In" by touring with Mike
Viola, Milton, and Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. The song "Love's an
Infection" was featured in the March/April issue of American Songwriter
Magazine for its lyrical craftsmanship. "Plug In" has been played on ESPN
television broadcasts, and has hit the charts of dozens of college and
commercial radio.

Connor continued to plant and grow roots in New York, eventually hooking up
with his current band members and further developing his distinct style on
the Goggin-produced EP "Breakdowns and Hymns" (think Morrissey and Paul
McCartney fronting Nada Surf). This EP saw the coalescing of a band. With
one member of M.Headphone, and a couple friends from the distant past,
Connor's live set was becoming a cohesive, dynamic experience. With the
current band he has developed the organic moment captured on "Plug In" into
a singular electric rock sound; matching the voltage of M.Headphone.

The significance of his unique experience at Burning Man years ago (whether
or not folklore need apply) is the influence behind Breakaway Republic's
motivations and urgency.

Tennessee-born singer and songwriter Josiah Leming will release his eagerly anticipated debut album for Reprise Records in early 2009.

Until then, you'll definitely want to watch the video for his beautiful song "Angels Undercover." The video is simple, compelling and quite moving. Angels Undercover: Selections From Josiah Leming’s Album Debut — a five-song sampler of tracks from the forthcoming album is available now on Josiah's MySpace page and via iTunes.

DOWNLOAD "ARCTIC OUTCRY WIND"

Leming left his home in Morristown, TN, at age 17 to make it as a musician, hoping to find a way to help support the family he was leaving behind -- eight siblings (six of whom are adopted), an out-of-work stepfather, and a mother with terminal cancer. Leming traveled around the Southeast playing open-mic nights in any club or coffeehouse that would have him, sleeping in his car and taking odd jobs to pay for food and gas, all the while dreaming about the album he would make one day.

For Leming, the dream of making an album has finally arrived.

Erran Baron Cohen's Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah is a collection of songs that brings the ancient music of Hanukkah into the 21st Century. The album contains five reinterpretations of classic favorites as well as five original tunes created exclusively for this project, all sung in English, Hebrew or Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish).

DOWNLOAD "DREIDEL" FROM SONGS IN THE KEY OF HANUKKAH

The songs are performed by some world-class Jewish singers, including Israeli superstar Idan Raichel, world-music diva Yasmin Levy and New York City-based rapper Y-Love (who actually rhymes in Yiddish). The result is a record that is both meaningful and fun.

"Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah...is a musical voyage that bears repeated listening both for adults and kids who will love to hear the re-workings of the songs they already know as well as the new, original tracks," says Baron Cohen. "Hanukkah has always been a kid-focused holiday so the challenge was how to transform the music so that it was cool and interesting for adults and yet something that the whole family could enjoy."
Good Vs. Evil.
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.
Beauty And The Beast.
Any and all of these concepts seem quite fitting when hearing that DeVotchka was the band chosen to have its song “How It Ends” featured in the new Gears Of War 2 commercial for XBox 360. The commercial premiered last month during the Sunday Night football game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts and will continue to run through the holidays, making for quite an enjoyable media-based holiday season with you and your family glued in front of the television.

More importantly for DeVotchka, though, is the new life that this promotion is breathing into an extraordinary album that was far overlooked a few years ago. The unlikely pairing of four extremely talented musicians with such diverse backgrounds is what makes the music of DeVotchka so enjoyable. With the uncanny on-stage arrangement of a junkyard cluttered by sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, a bouzouki, an upright bass, percussion, trumpet, drums and a Theremin, it’s no wonder Xbox 360 chose this band as one that could bring such a conversely beautiful approach to a war game. Brilliantly playing into the end of the year 2008, this is a holiday package that is sure to end your year on a good note!

"The second annual CPOPor2nity went off as expected at the C-POP Gallery in Detroit cultural district . Droves of art lovers came early and stayed late for the fantastic exhibition of art. A wide range of artistic styles and mediums were on display from fine art all the way to the abstract.

For those who aren’t in the know, c-pop is Detroit’s low-brow art gallery juggernaut which has hosted huge names such as Shag, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr and Shepperd Fairy. For the second year in a row the art house behemoth has given new and up incoming artists a chance to receive a solo exhibit at the gallery. Doing most of its promoting via Myspace C-pop’s head honcho Tom Thewes was able to compile over 50 talented artists from around the world. The show had a submission fee of $125 which is a little steeper than most shows, but the artist are able to keep 90% of the sale instead of the typical 30%-50% gallery take on any given art sale. The most obvious perk of all landing a solo exhibition at a prestigious gallery like c-pop.

Some of you readers may feel that the artists are getting the short end of the deal. Well as an up incoming artist myself, trust me its well worth it. Being able to say you’ve had your work shown at a gallery which is known on an international scale is huge. Total bragging rights for an artist, especially if it’s you that gets selected for a solo show. I’m positive most emerging artist I know would at least part with a toe or two for the opportunity, so in retrospect $125 isn’t so bad.
Artist from the Cpopur2unity who stuck out to me where, Tony Roko the artist sense of color and attitude is amazing, Ruby Fig a definite natural, Josh Buckenberger who’s rich oil paintings and twisted taste for darkness and mystery is always apparent in his work. Honestly I encourage all who read this to trek their asses down to the gallery to see for themselves because the collection of work is to good miss.

After I walked out of the show I had this feeling over me. This compulsion to go back to art desk and wipe out some more paintings, step up my game up another notch or two. When ever that happens I know I’ve been to a good show. One of my favorite things about art is its ability to always be contagious, and its great to see such creative momentum like that in happening in the city of Detroit right now.

I only hope that Detroit’s art community keeps expanding and evolving. "

Derek Ecker is a recent CCS graduate and MCB contributor. He has put on many art shows in the past year including his most recent "One Man Show" currently on the walls of Cafe 1923 in Hamtramck (HATCH SHOW) -check this video interview from a previous show "WOOD to Your Mother" that MCB did covering his work.

WILD AT HEART - Monday December 15th 2008

Hey Kirk// here is this week's blog post - Wild Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

It was an interesting weekend for me so let’s look at what went on of interest to me.

First of all, I must say I admire President Bush’s reflexes at the Baghdad news conference when he had to duck a pair of shoes thrown at him by an Iraqi reporter Muntadar al-Zeidi who yelled at him "This is your farewell kiss, you dog!"”. I thought he was just adept at avoiding important questions and responsibilities. In Iraqi culture, throwing your shoes at someone is a sign of contempt (remember when all those shoes were thrown at the Saddam statue when it was brought down by US Marines in 2003). Can you imagine how fun American news conferences would be if that happened here? I would love to see someone like Dan Rather throw his shoes at somebody during a press conference.

I heard news that two people I admire passed away recently. First, on Dec 4th, Forrest J Ackerman passed away. He was a big fan of science fiction fan and inspired many people both within the field. He wrote for the first sci-fi fanzine, started the tradition of wearing costumes to conventions (now called cosplay), helped found the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, earned a Hugo for “#1 Fan Personality”, wrote the shortest sci-fi story ever, named the character Vampirella and most importantly created the long running magazine “Famous Monsters of Filmland”. His influence touched everyone from Ray Bradbury to Ed Wood and along with amassing a collection of over 300,000 sci-fi items, he also had featured cameos in over 210 films, including The Howling, Return of the Living Dead Part II, The Power, Amazon Women on the Moon, Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold and at Michael Jackson's Thriller video. He also is known by fans to wear one of only three Dracula rings given to him by Bela Lugosi. His influence will be missed in the genre.

The second person was famous 1950’s pin-up queen Bettie Page on Dec 11th. She had a huge cult following with her jet black hair, trademark bangs and infectious smile. Of all the early pin-up models, I can’t think of one that comes close to her beauty or that has influenced as many artists, esp in the rockabilly genre. If you go to my myspace at myspace.com/wildatheart_13, you can look at my top friends and see Bettie Page lookalike Bernie Dexter to see some of the influence. She is best known for her bondage/fetish work with Irving Klaw studios. It was the busting up of this studio which caused Bettie to withdraw from the spotlight and seek seclusion. She found religion and had fully disappeared until just recently when she resurfaced for interviews but she didn’t allow any pictures of her to be taken as not to diminish her fans memories. She is also famous for the burlesque films Striporama and Varietease, the famed Bunny Yeager photo shoots which got her the January 1955 Playmate Of The Month (along with the various postcard you can buy at any beach and the shot with her at two cheetahs) and many famous drawing from artists ranging from Olivia to Jim Silke. I have seen her image on numerous tattoos, cars and guitars. The female comic book heroine in the Rocketeer was based on Bettie Page (portrayed by Jennifer Connelly in the movie) and Gretchen Moll plays her in the 2006 biopic “The Notorious Bettie Page”. I still think she is the most beautiful woman ever and it is sad to think she is no longer around.

On a more inspiring note, biologists have found numerous new species of animals in the Greater Mekong region of Southeast Asia including 519 plants, 279 fish, 88 frogs, 88 spiders, 46 lizards, 22 snakes, 15 mammals, four birds, four turtles, two salamanders and a toad. On the list are the world's largest huntsman spider with a leg span of 30 centimeters (11.8 inches), a shocking pink coloured "dragon millipede" which produces cyanide and the Laotian rock rat which was thought to be extinct about 11 million years ago. It is amazing to me how many animal species are out there that haven’t been found due to location or other factors and how many might disappear without ever having been documented.

I had the privilege of seeing a bunch of new films this weekend but here are three I can talk about this week (look forward to the movie “Doubt” which I will discuss in a future column). I will start with a remake of one of my favorite films, “The Day The Earth Stood Still” starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly. The original came out in 1951 during the cold war paranoia and focused on the fear and suspicion of that era. The new film puts more focus on issues like environmental destruction of the planet by mankind. In the movie, a sphere lands in Central Park causing worldwide panic. When the alien steps out of the ship accompanied by a large robot, he is shot and taken to a secure facility. He wants to talk to the UN but is prevented from doing so. Astrobiologist Helen Benson (Connelly) is convinced Klaatu (Reeves) wants to help mankind and helps him escape. On the run, Klaatu decides that Earth is doomed and instructs the other globes on the planet to rescue samples of Earth’s animal life off Earth and starts the doomsday sequence of the planet. Helen, along with her son (Jaden Smith as a mostly annoying stepson Helen is looking after since his father died) and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Barnhardt (John Cleese) try to make the case why Earth should be spared. The film ends as Klaatu tries to stop Earth’s destruction which is damn cool as locust-like creatures are destroying everything manmade. While not up to par of the original, I thought this was a decent remake (better than Cruise’s War Of the Worlds) and should excite the action fans (as a Dallas Cowboys fan, I enjoyed seeing the destruction of the Meadowlands). Reeves does a good job playing the emotionless Klaatu and the movie plays enough homage to the original to make it respectful. I wish the kid had a better role as he can get annoying and I would to have liked more time with Kathy Bates character (Secretary of Defense) who seems to have the intuition on what is happening but is held in check by protocol. I would give the movie a B-.

Next, we get a different look at the holiday season with the Latino flavored “Nothing Like The Holidays” as three Puerto Rican siblings return to their parents' home for Christmas in Humboldt Park on Chicago's northwest side. This is like a big Hallmark TV movie instead of a feature film. The kids include Jesse (Freddy Rodriguez) who has just returned from Iraq after being wounded in combat and wants to rekindle things with his old flame despite the fact she is seeing someone else, Roxanna (Vanessa Ferlito), a struggling actress and Mauricio (John Leguizamo), a successful attorney with his white wife Sarah (Debra Messing) who would rather raise capital than a child. Things are going OK until at dinner, their mother Anna (Elizabeth Pena) announces she is going to divorce her husband Eduardo (Alfred Molina) and throws the whole holiday into a crash course which causes everyone to rethink their lives but in the end, the family pulls together and reveals the strength of familial bonds. The film is nothing we haven’t seen before but the acting is strong and avoids many potential stereotypes in it’s portrayal of a family going through trying times at the holiday season. The way the family comes together might appeal to many this season of uncertainty though more might wait til it comes out on video. Don’t let the nationality of the characters dictate going to see this holiday treat. I give it a B.

Lastly, The Tale Of Despereaux will open Dec 19th and is based on the children's fantasy book written by Kate DiCamillo. It is about a mouse who is unlike his peers due to the fact that he isn’t afraid of cats and knives and does things like talk to humans and read stories of brave knights. He will also befriend a rat named Chiaroscuro who accidentally falls into the queen's soup tureen during Soup Day (a big event the whole town celebrates), startling her and causing her to have a fatal heart attack. The grief-stricken king outlaws soup and rats causing a disruption in the natural order dragging the town into a dreary existence with cloudy skies and no rain. Despereaux also falls in love with Princess Pea (the queen’s daughter) with whom he tells her stories of a princess like her and a brave knight that will save her. After a failed attempt by Chiaroscuro to apologize to the Princess, he manipulates her servant girl Mig into kidnapping Princess Pea and sealing her in the dungeon so that she will remain in the dark forever. Despereaux must then put forth a plan to rescue the Princess and make Chiaroscuro realize the error of his ways. The story has a happy ending and is very cute which the young kids will enjoy. The animation style works well thought I am not sure it will attract the older crowd that would also go to see “Wall-E” or similar films. I wasn’t excited by some of the overuse of narration or the fact that the majority of the voices are well known actors (I prefer the voice over experts to do the majority of these roles. Only Tracy Ullman has the chops to really pull off different characters). This is a middle of the pack animated movie. Not as great as the wonderful work coming out of Pixar but not as annoying as films like “Happily N’Ever After”. A good film to take kids to for the holidays, I give the film a C.

Don’t forget the Cyndi Lauper charity auction ends tomorrow, Dec 16th, and you still have the opportunity to put down a bid for items like a voice lesson & lunch with Cyndi in NYC (travel & hotel included), 2 VIP Tickets to The View and a meet & greet with Whoopi Goldberg, a pair of boots signed by Patti Labelle from her own closet, 2 VIP Tickets and meet & greet passes to The B-52s concert in 2009, handwritten lyrics to "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, a signed Miley Cyrus t-shirt, 4 VIP Tickets to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and many other cool items. 100% of the net proceeds will benefit the True Colors Fund, CenterLink and PFLAG was which founded by Cyndi Lauper in 2008 to empower the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied community to volunteer and support the organizations working on their behalf at the national, state and local levels.

I also went to the MOCAD this weekend and took in their current exhibitions. Sometimes I wonder what artists are really thinking but the themes can make you think. They are “Broadcast” (this exhibition focuses on artists' explorations of broadcast themes including some interesting work from the 1960’s and 70’s), “Becoming: Photographs from the Wedge Collection” (this examines ways in which personal and cultural identity are created, challenged, or affirmed) and “Business as Usual” (explores the complex intersection of art and commerce over the past decade). The broadcast and business exhibits are interesting though I really enjoyed the photography exhibit most of all. Admission is free and it is a nice way to get some culture in one of the more unique experience in Detroit.

Normally, I will list a bunch of cool concerts for the week but except for Crystal Method at the Boom Boom Room in Windsor on Dec 17, nothing really stands out to me. Good luck to everyone taking their finals this week and see you next Monday.

Good Bye Bettie Page

As a standard here at MCB we try not to post "breaking news" or other news type items leaving that for others but we just can't let the passing of Bettie Page go without a post.
There are plenty of things to say about the legend - as an avid collector of original materials produced by Bettie Page and the individuals who photographed her I am sad to hear about her passing today of a heart attack.
My dealer for rare original photos and prints is right here in Detroit and it so happens they have one of the most extensive and complete collections in the world. With background data and details specific to the shots, shoots and the people involved in creating these sets of portraits, http://www.papericons.com/ has been instrumental in building my authentic collection of rare and collectable materials of not only Bettie Page but other pin-up type photos and prints/films.
They come highly recommended but serious inquiries only please!
NO JERKOFFS!
RIP Bettie!

FREE Seminar # 1 Given by MCB (part timer) Contributor Ross S

OFFICIAL E.D. Seminar #1:
Introduction to Photoshop (December 13th)
by Ross Sandelius

The Exposure.Detroit Seminar & Education Committee will be holding our FIRST educational event where members of Exposure.Detroit will learn the basics of the industry-standard image editing program from Adobe... Photoshop.

When: December 13th - Saturday
Where: HFCC Campus Patterson Technology Building in Dearborn Classroom #T-163
For: Learning the basic tools of Photoshop as well as learning some time-saving tips and tricks from the pros!
Time: 10am-1pm
Duration: 3 hrs (with a break & discussion/Q&A time)
Recommended to Bring: Laptop with Photoshop if possible. I am requesting that anybody who is able to bring a laptop (or an extra laptop, if you have it!) with Photoshop please do so, as we can obviously not provide laptops for every person. The more people we can get to have a hands-on experience the better!

Please note: The classroom has a maximum seating capacity of 30 seats, so any additional attendees may have to stand (or maybe someone nice will offer their up for half the time!).

Special thanks to the Seminar committee members who have made this event possible...

Kevin Ridge
country_boy_shane
Aaron Fortin
Tego Jim
... as well as all of the additional Exposure.Detroit members who have offered up their help & knowledge.

These guys rock, so make sure to thank them at the seminar!

This seminar will walk you through some Photoshop basics, such as using the basic selection/manipulation tools, working with layers to add depth and dimension to your images, as well as exploring some of the effects that Photoshop provides for it's users to make their images really stand out!

Toward the end of the session, we will have a short question & answer session where you can ask questions about the topics that have been covered in the seminar as well as any other questions you may have. In addition to the Q&A session, we will also be offering up a "lightning round" of quick Photoshop tips and tricks to make your Photoshopping experience quicker, easier, and more efficient.

I know the date may not be ideal for some and that scheduling extra time around this time of year can be difficult, but becoming comfortable with this program is, literally, a game-changer for photographers. You will see your images differently after learning what you can do with Photoshop and you will assume total control over every aspect of your photos.

These are just some of the great events put on by the Exposure Detroit Commitees so check them out if you are a photographer and join if you want to become part of Detroit's largest photography collective.

Their recent full-length, DanceThink LP, features mixes by Grammy-nominated engineer Mark Saunders and his multi-platinum studio in New York, the same people responsible for the sound of Shiny Toy Guns 2007 Warner Brothers release We Are Pilots, Tricky's Maxinquaye, David Byrne's Feelings, and The Cure's Wish.

On May 15th, 2008 the band was named one of the most promising bands in the country by American Eagle's New Music Union. As a result, they were invited to perform at the A.E. Summer Festival, curated by Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Coming off of a fully-stocked summer schedule -- including (in addition to the A.E. Festival) BlissFest, Hoxeyville, Dunegrass, Feel Good Festival, The Jazz Aspen Snow Mass, and Nelson Ledges, alongside artists such as Lotus, Moe, Bucket Head, and Bela Fleck

-- My Dear Disco is in full-flight, following their "DanceThink Music," wherever it takes them.
