Although we try to cover all the bases here at MCB we failed to post this opening last week.
We were aware of the event and had the flyer but it fell through the cracks. Still plenty of time to check out the great work from Marianne Letasi and a list of others at River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte.

Louis XIV Interview - Detroit MI Sat Jan 26th

“I very nearly had to wait”. – King Louis XIV
Louis XIV Kicks Royal Rock Ass at The Majestic
They’re back with a new album, but which king would win in a fight:
By Sidonia Sometimes
Louis XIV rolled into Detroit with The Editors and Hot Hot Heat for a show at The Majestic and I waited over an hour to chat with guitarist Brian Karscig, aka Brian XIV. Their tour manager was still on Chicago time when he asked me to arrive during soundcheck. But that’s life on the road. It’s like that sometimes.
Brian and I chat backstage in a cold, tiny dressing room. He’s bundled in a black Peabody coat, fedora and a thick scarf. He rubs his hands together to warm them. The only real heat in the place at 4 pm is Hot Hot Heat. We hear them in the background during soundcheck.
Louis XIV puts the Mick Jagger swagger back into the indie rock mix. With their supercharged sex lyrics, plucky, jumped-up guitar lines, melodic vocals and attitude to match, the band is in town to kick some royal rock ass on the eve of the release of their new album Slick Dogs and Ponies.
On the new album, the band uses strong guitar parts, orchestral arrangements and songs that are intricately woven to create an original work from beginning to end. Air Traffic Control tips its hat to Bowie and the Spiders From Mars with its sweeping orchestral soundscapes while tracks like Guilt By Association get down-on-the-floor dirty with frantic guitar lines and hints of harpsichord.
Originally, as the band recorded the album, they had to choose 10 songs by May. Then the song lineup changed when the band didn’t finish until August. Then it changed again. And again. And again.
“We made seven different records and I don’t know if we could do that again,” Brian says. “I think we made an album we can never duplicate. It’s not for good or for bad. I just don’t think we could make it again.”
In the end, the band recorded 63 tracks at their studio in San Diego. Eleven made the album, eight were released as B-sides and four landed on an EP released on September 11. The band went a little mental in the studio. They had to go to the edge to jump off and land in the lake.
“Once you start to think about music, it starts to suck,” Brian explains. “We had to stop thinking about other peoples expectations and just kind of do what we wanted to do.”
Meanwhile, the stage on the other side of the dressing room door goes silent as Hot Hot Heat finishes their soundcheck and our conversation drifts into Paris and King Louis XIV. One of the guys in Hot Hot Heat opens the door.
“Oh, sorry,” he says as he ducks out again. “Don’t get Brian started about Franz Ferdinand.”
So, who would win in a fight? Louis XIV or Franz Ferdinand?
“Franz Ferdinand,” Brian says with a smile. “We’re lovers not fighters.”
And they are. The band loved Paris so much that they wrote their entire first album there. In two weeks.
“We wanted to get out of our hometown (San Diego). We had a free place to stay in Paris and wanted to find some inspiration. That’s kind of how it started.”
So the band put their gear on a plane and set up shop in the historic Latin Quarter of Paris. They recorded eleven songs. They self-released a namesake EP, passed out free MP3s, caught the attention of Atlantic Records and ten of the Paris tracks went on to become The Best Little Secrets Are Kept, their debut CD. They would later share stages with The Killers, The White Stripes, The Pixies and do a couple of festival dates with The Von Bondies.
We’re still talking about Paris when the tour manager cracks the door. They need him on stage for soundcheck in a couple of minutes.
So, is there any truth to the rumor about the 15-minute impromptu set in the parking lot of the old Gold Dollar with The Von Bondies later tonight?
Brian thinks it over. He’s not sure. I’ve asked him a fake question about a place that doesn’t exist anymore.
“Yes!” he says with a big dose of conviction.
On second thought …
“Hmmm … I’m not sure.”
I tell him I’m not sure either. I’m kidding him. He laughs.
“It was great to meet you,” he says as he stands up.
Brian and Louis XIV went on to play for a packed house at The Majestic.

Real Detroit 9 Live Birthday Bash - Majestic Theatre - Sat Feb 2nd
MOTORCITYBLOG asked Real Detroit about thier thoughts turning 9 freakin' years old
'from Real Detroit music writer jeff milo'
"Real Detroit Weekly turns 9 years old this month and as the city becomes besieged with snow, we decided that instead of us coming over to your place, and expecting you to give us presents while we enjoy cone hats, a balding clown on his way back from an AA meeting and your slouched cupcakes with candles stuck in them, maybe it'd be better if you all came to the Magic Stick and instead of presents, just come toast a drink with us and enjoy the measured madness of 5 stellar live acts that have consistently been some of our favorite bands in our still pre-teen existence:
The aristocratic 60's pop-psyche-garage rockers The Go; the eastside hard-driving, blues-inflected classic rock-lovin trio the Muggs; the space-pop quirk-rock The Dead Bodies; the staggering and theatric neo folk rock The Silent Years; and electro-songsmith and ambio/dance-pop mastermind Deastro (aka Randy Chabot, who will also be playing as his side-project Our Brother The Megazord.)
Most importantly, the celebration is a thank you to all local bands and all music fans for their dedication and camaraderie over the years. We appreciate all the support.
See you there. 2/2 magic stick"
Now how can you turn down that invitation? Better show up early as this one is gonna go late!
Thanks JM

It is sooper EZ to do so If you would like to volunteer please send me a message. This race is designed to be a bit shorter, due to inclement weather, so you do not have to expect a heroic effort as to dealing with the cold weather. All volunteers will be in pairs of two and will not be stationed in dark creepy alleys. ; ) Be sure to drag your friends along! We would like to have a big turn-out! There will be free coffee and hot cocoa at the start and possibly free pizza at the end. As always, the event is completely free and loads of fun! If 6:00 is to early for you to make it? Blahblahblah (the exhibition) - Museum of New Art (MONA) - Sat Jan 19th

Blahblahblah (the exhibition)
The Museum of New Art (MONA) is proud to announce the exhibition Blahblahblah, from January 19 through February 22.
Late in the last century, the rise of theory spawned the rise of anti-aestheticism.
Even for cultural theorists discussions concerning aesthetics were often carried out in a critical shorthand that failed to engage with the work of art, much less any notions of aesthetic experience. Any attempt to see the art object as embodying and conveying knowledge in itself quickly faded as an outdated conception.Moving into this new century, the art object has become a distant concern. A work of art no longer applies as the source for one's conviction of its value. An art object is no longer visually distinct from a non-art object.
Instead, its placement in an art space and context has orientated it within an established network of artistic practices, ideas, debates and modes of display otherwise known as the 'artworld'. This leaves art solely as an artworld activity, an institutional activity.
A revived aestheticism encourages the idea that the intrinsic impact of a work of art has the potential to open radically different ways of thinking about identity, politics and culture. If we encourage 'theory' to enter a more reflective phase, we can expect the appearance of a new aestheticism. At a moment that is often termed 'post-theoretical', this is a direct index to which there is a renewed willingness among critics and philosophers to consider the ways in which cultural theory often overlooked key aspects of the object.
Welcome to the 21st Century! Blahblahblah embraces both a new aetheticism and the art object in all its renewed wonder and beauty.
The Museum of New Art is located at 7 North Saginaw, Pontiac.
The opening reception for Blahblahblah will be Saturday, January 19th from 6pm until 9pm. Regular museum hours are: Thursday through Saturday, 12pm to 6pm.
Telephone: 248-210-7560.

This is a non-smoking, all-ages venue, but please be advised that some of the content is not appropriate for children. Parents should use their discretion when deciding whether to bring their young ones.
What is sketch comedy?
Unlike improv (improvisational) comedy, sketch comedy consists of short, scripted and rehearsed material. So, when we screw up, it's not because we can't figure out what to next....it's because we forgot! The Monkey Rampant show, "Comedy, Monkey Style" is comprised of around 20 original sketches performed at a somewhat frantic pace, in a random order, determined by the audience. Keep an open mind, be ready to laugh and maybe be a little shocked, and have fun. "

I, Crime Live Show Review
My friend Kirk from MOTORCITYBLOG called me up and asked me if I would like to go see a band called I, Crime for free, the only catch was I would have to write a review. That sounded fair to me, so I headed on down to The Magic Stick in Detroit to check it out. Not ever listening to I Crime I was going in clean and I had no idea what to expect. Were they going to sound like a lot of other random Detroit bands or would something stick out that was different? Once at the stick I went right to the merchandise to check out the swag for sale and I liked their CD cover design…brown paper baggish with burgundy graphics of a male/female balancing act doing their thing on a creeping wolf.
When they took the stage and started playing I could tell right away I,Crime could write a catchy song. The thing I like most about them was the way the singers (Anderson, Jennie and Charlie) harmonized together. With a name like Jennie Knaggs you would think she was leading a punk band from the streets of Melvindale but she had a very hunting voice with good range. Anderson Walworth would balance it out and it really worked. It was cool to see them share the "spotlight" with the vocals – alternating between songs with the lead. The drummer Charlie McCutcheon blended in well with nice transitions and punch when needed. You could tell they were having fun and all were involved in the song development on the record. This band was great at starting a song out kind of slow and then all of a sudden they would kick it into overdrive then right back down to nice soft soothing singing again.
Their songs covered a nice range of styles as well - from real heavy punk styling to haunting dark country like songs. "Drowning" was my favorite of the set by far and I thought that the song had definite radio play potential. Once they finished I decided to leave without catching the other bands leaving I,Crime fresh in mind for the night – but stopped at the merch booth before heading down the stairs with an EP.

(USA/2007) Directed by Jonathan Demme
Following the path of former President Jimmy Carter’s recent book tour for his highly controversial Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, Academy Award®-winning director Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia, Stop Making Sense, The Silence of the Lambs) here reveals a complex man who, with the gusto of an energized youngster, criss-crosses the country to get his message across – even as that message creates a media firestorm in which his credibility, objectivity, judgment and even motives are repeatedly called into question. Intimate and unblinking, Man From Plains was described by Variety’s Ronnie Scheib as “a peerless portrait that is as complex as its subject.” With his surprising new documentary, Demme becomes the ultimate fly-on-the-wall, exploring the private and public sides of the tireless, still-influential 39th President, whose personal sense of justice compels him to pursue, with undiminished energy, his own lifelong, spiritual vision of reconciliation and peace – regardless of where the chips may fall.

Inge Morath and Arthur Miller: China - UMMA Offsite - Sat Jan 12th
Saturday January 12th –Sunday March 23rd 2008
"In 1978, only two years after the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, photographer Inge Morath and her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, were invited to travel to China. They returned again in 1979 and 1983, fueled by Morath’s knowledge of Chinese language, poetry, and history, and Miller’s interest in the politics of the present moment. This exhibition captures two artists responding to a society in transition—photographs by Morath, accompanied by excerpts from both her and Miller's journals, which reflect Morath’s empathy for China's people and culture and her urgent desire to understand what Miller called “China's contradiction”: the ongoing struggle of new traditions in conflict with ancient ones.
