Wild At Heart weekend

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Tune in Saturday morning for interviews with bassist Eric Allen of Apples In Stereo and also the Glitch Mob. The show is 8-10AM Saturday morning on WXOU 88.3FM or www.wxou.org.

Recently I saw the movie "Little Traitor" by director Lynn Roth which is based on the novel "Panther in the Basement" by the world-renowned author Amos Oz. As long as I can remember, there has been a conflict in Isreal. In November 1947, the United Nations voted in favor of the partition of Palestine, proposing the creation of a Jewish state, an Arab state, and a UN-administered Jerusalem. Partition was accepted by Zionist leaders but rejected by Arab leaders, leading to civil war. Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948 and neighboring Arab states attacked the next day. Since then, Israel has fought a series of wars with neighboring Arab states. The Jews in Isreal complained about British patroling of their contry despite the fact that Britain helped free the Jews in WWII. This movie takes place in the months prior to Israel becoming a state and puts it's focus on a young Jewish boy, Proffy Liebowitz, who wants nothing more than for the occupying British to get the hell out of his land and is plotting with some classmates for acts of freedom/terrorism to make this happen. One day, late for curfew, he is picked up by Sergeant Dunlop (the talented Alfred Molina) who instead of arresting him, takes him home for a worse punishment. Not expecting this kindness, Proffy is intrigued and starts what becomes a friendship with this soldier. When his friends find out, he is accused of being a 'traitor' and put on trial by his own people. He is eventually found innocent but these experiences shape him for life;especially the shock that he could have such genuine affection for the enemy. The movie has some real nice moments and looks at a part of history we haven't seen too often in cinema. The movie is a little simple at times as Molina is the main force behind this movie. The movie takes an interesting look at the real conflicts and friendships that can form between people who are supposed to hate each other due to their background. While the movie is safer than many other war films ("Hurt Locker" for instance), it can be appreciated for what it is. My grade is a B-.

If you rather be in movies than watch them, Los Angeles based Casting Director Tracy Dixon is holding an open casting call to meet and greet those interested in working on the major feature film, “Real Steel.” Shooting begins in mid-June and the production is looking to hire thousands of Detroit locals to work as extras on the film. The casting call will be open to men and women of all ethnicities, ages 18 or older. For those who are wondering what the movie is about, “Real Steel” is directed by Shawn Levy (“Night At The Museum”, “Date Night”) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. The new sport of robot-boxing is the backdrop for this sports drama about a former boxer (Hugh Jackman) who gets one last shot at a comeback when he teams up with his long-lost son (Dakota Goyo) to train a unique robot for the upcoming Real Steel World Championship. The open casting will take place on Saturday, May 15th From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM @ 1501 Maple Lane in Troy. For more info, call 310-225-5196.

See you Monday for my next blog. Enjoy the nice weather tonight!

"It's Like An 80s Movie": Public Image Limited at the Crofoot by DC-in-Detroit

John Lydon wants nothing to come between you and him. No record labels. No opening acts. No attitude.

Okay, maybe attitude. Just don't talk during his show. Or lean on his stage.

PiL rolled into Pontiac on 28 April, 18 years to the day from their last Detroit show, so the legend goes. I can buy it; I can also believe that half the crowd last night was at that show, too. I personally talked to a good handful of people who had seen PiL in the 80s and a couple who had seen them in the 70s.

That's a hint that this crowd wasn't what one may have anticipated. I was expecting the hardcores, those crusty punks that periodically emerge from the mists of time to appear at local shows, only to immediately vanish with the sound of the last sacred chord; the ones I always wonder where the hell they are the rest of the time. (They can't ALL work at Noir Leather, can they?) But no. This was a mature, energetic crowd, happy to be out on a weeknight, and fully in the palm of the legendary John "Don't Call Him Johnny" Lydon.

Doors were at 8, and I was pulling up to the Crofoot at around 9 to find a line of people around the edge of the building. "The show is NOT sold out!" the wrangler announced, to calm us down. That worked for a minute... until at 9:12 the unmistakable squall that begins "This Is Not A Love Song" came rolling out of the open doors.

Aaaaahhhh! We're still outside!!

Before we instigated a trampling situation, our helpful wrangler once again announced, "They're doing a TWO HOUR SET. You have plenty of time!" The beasts, we were soothed. And, spoiler alert! They played two STRONG hours, without a break (other than Lydon's periodic Hennessy gargles).

I slid in to the Crofoot to an unfamiliar sight: A full venue. I like the Crofoot Ballroom as a theatre -- nice open main room, catwalk upstairs for the sitty-types, easy bar access. It's laid out very much like the main room at St Andrew's, but smaller, cleaner and with better parking. I've seen several shows there over the past year, but I've never been in the room this full. I loved it. And with PiL absolutely blasting the shit out of the place, it felt a little like home.

They got us stragglers (I was there by 9!) inside by the third song, and by then, Lydon was already hollering at some sap on the upper level. I missed the grievous offense for which he was being punished, but couldn't keep myself from cracking up at Lydon, on the mic, sneering at the guy "we didn't come here to listen to you talk! you cunt!" That quickly answered one question of the night -- did he still have that attitude? Yes. Yes he did. On the other hand, Lydon quickly broke into a broad smile after his little tirade. Could it be... theater? Whatever it was, it was working. The near-capacity crowd was all his.

John Lydon is a charismatic motherfucker. The term "larger than life" is pretty well applied here, as it always has been. Even beyond the crazy eyes and screechy-warble, it's hard to take your eyes off him. Whether you're a fan of his or not, you're at least probably hoping you stay on his good side.

Not that he was alone up there. The "and the rest" of PiL have been on the roster since the 1980s (but for a new bassist) and should really not be glossed over. An incredibly talented group of men putting out a LOT of sound.

Awash in all that sound, feeling both nostalgic and modern, I was re-anchored to the room by the appearance of a friend who had driven 200 miles that night just for the show. (Well, also maybe to escape Dayton.) He'd somehow managed to drag himself away from the bouncy-but-not-thrashy front floor to my eye-on-the-crowd perch at the main bar -- and I'm glad he did; these things are always better when shared. After some mutual wonderment at the awesomeness of the show, some jokes at the headliner's expense ("I was going to ask if you think John still has his voice, but John never really HAD a voice, did he?") and a little bit of canoodling, he remarked, "This is like an 80s movie!"

"But which of us is from the wrong side of the tracks?" I asked.

"...Have you ever BEEN to Dayton??"

He was right, though. The night made me think of the idealized, well-lit and -polished version of punk and new wave in the 80s -- no dressed-up anger, no spoiled boredom, just a lot of bouncy people, smashed into one big room, each waiting for his or her own anthem to hit the soundtrack. (I got mine with "Flowers of Romance.")

For two strong hours, it was 1986 for all of us.

Detroit Breakdown or windy city shakedown on July 31st

Looks like a good time for a Chicago road trip!

The Ponderosa Stomp & Lincoln Center Announce
The Detroit Breakdown!
Two Shows – Saturday, July 31
Mitch Ryder, ? and the Mysterians, The Gories, Death, Eddie Kirkland
The Motor City Soul Revue features the Velvelettes, Dennis Coffey, Melvin Davis & Spyder Turner w/ The Party Stompers

The music fanatics behind the Ponderosa Stomp have long championed the myriad sounds of the Motor City; on July 31st they partner with Lincoln Center to bring audiences The Detroit Breakdown, a multi-genre tribute to the city's musical heritage. Sixties garage icons Mitch Ryder and ? and the Mysterians, iconoclastic rockers The Gories and Death, nomadic bluesman Eddie Kirkland, stirring soul singers Melvin Davis and Spyder Turner, Motown hitmakers the Velvelettes and Dennis Coffey and R&B all stars the Party Stompers will bring their multi-faceted talents to the Lincoln Center Out of Doors’ “Roots of American Music” day-long program, with performances on the Hearst Plaza Stage by day and Damrosch Park Bandshell in the evening.
There has long been an air of musical magic in Detroit, resulting in artists of the highest caliber springing from the city in the years following Henry Ford’s automotive revolution. As Irish, Poles, African-Americans, Italians and Latinos took their places side by side on the city's assembly lines, the co-mingling of cultural backgrounds produced an artistic renaissance of both chart-toppers and cult legends that -- despite the hard times the city has recently suffered -- continues to reverberate to this day.
When Motown put Detroit on the map, it was with an internationally influential sound best exemplified by pioneering girl group the Velvelettes, whose hits "Needle In A Haystack" and "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" defined the very core of swinging sixties culture.
Meanwhile, the Motor City underground thrived with countless smaller labels, most notably Fortune Records, who released dazzling singles by soul men Melvin Davis and Spyder Turner, as well as blues guitarist Eddie Kirkland. While Turner and Davis would go on to score chart-topping hits with "Stand By Me" and "You've Got To Crawl (Before You Walk)" respectively, Kirkland (whose career began in the early '40s alongside another Fortune artist, John Lee Hooker) became Otis Redding's bandleader, continuing to record for labels such as Stax, King, LuPine and Delmark. Meanwhile, guitar-slinging Funk Brother Dennis Coffey -- soon to make history with the funk masterpiece "Scopio" -- was defining hits like the Temptations' "Cloud Nine" and the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing."

With this heady musical mixture as a launching pad, the area's garage scene exploded. In 1966 alone, Mitch Ryder's high-octane soul shouting hit the top of the charts with "Devil With a Blue Dress" and Latino rockers ? and the Mysterians barreled to number one with the enigmatic million seller "96 Tears." The widely-hailed Stooges and MC5 would soon follow in their footsteps, and in turn, the torch would again be passed. Death, formed in 1971, were a quartet of black teenagers whose hard rocking proto-punk was the inevitable outcome of the racial cross-pollination long evident in the Detroit music scene. A recent reissue garnered rave reviews in the New York Times, re-igniting the band and the audience they were never afforded during their heyday. (again, the last sentence perhaps could be axed).
The following decade birthed yet another ahead-of-its-time aggregation in the Gories. Equally inspired by the the blues, R&B and garage punk pioneers who had come before them, their deconstructionalist approach may have been too incendiary for its time, but their influence -- Jack White has long named them as a prime inspiration to the White Stripes -- has been positively arresting on local, national and international levels.
The Detroit Breakdown showcases the spiritual continuum and musical progression that has long served as the hallmark of a true artistic metropolis. Having partnered with Lincoln Center for a successful series of shows last summer, the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation's tribute to Detroit comes at a time when the city's staggering economic challenges have reached the forefront in the media. “Detroit's various musical eras all feed from each other and continue to influence music around the world," says Stomp spokesman Ira Padnos. "We felt it only right that they should be honored and celebrated by as storied an institution as Lincoln Center."

ABOUT LINCOLN CENTER OUT OF DOORS
Inaugurated in 1971 under director of community programming Leonard DePaur, Out of Doors began as a small festival of street theater, in collaboration with Everyman Theater (co-founded by actress Geraldine Fitzgerald.) Former Lincoln Center President John Mazzola’s vision was “to bring the community to Lincoln Center and bring Lincoln Center to the community.” Gradually expanding to include music and dance performances, the re-christened Lincoln Center Out of Doors has grown into one of the largest free performance festivals in the U.S. Over its 40-year history, Out of Doors has commissioned some 90 works from composers and choreographers and presented hundreds of major dance companies, renowned world-music artists, and legendary jazz, folk, gospel, blues and rock musicians, many under the auspices of its popular “Roots of American Music” mini-festival, and poets and storytellers as part of the annual “La Casita.” It has highlighted the rich cultural diversity of New York City with performances by established ensembles and up-and-coming groups and has partnered with dozens of community and cultural organizations.
ABOUT PONDEROSA STOMP
The Ponderosa Stomp is an American roots music festival dedicated to recognizing the architects of rock-n-roll, blues, jazz, country, swamp pop, and soul. Founded in New Orleans and produced by the non-profit Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau, a diverse group of music fanatics who have presented over 50 concerts with over 200 musical legends, the Stomp always succeeds in exposing rare musical icons to their adoring fans and to new audiences. The Stomp itself has now become legendary in reviving careers and giving a new lease on musical life to so many performers.

Glitch Mob - Free The Robots - DENU - Majestic Theatre Detroit - Sunday May 2nd 2010

at the Majestic Theatre Detroit 5/2
THE GLITCH MOB
FREE THE ROBOTS * DERU
SUNDAY, MAY 2 – MAJESTIC THEATRE
$15 * AA * 8:00 PM
Taking influences from hip-hop, rock and experimental electronic genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted a new form of futuristic dance music. Their wicked combination of ferocious bass, neck-snapping drums and complex melodies has earned them a worldwide grassroots fanbase. What started as a loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Ooah and Boreta found themselves frequently playing the same shows, and eventually collaborating during sets. Their live performance is a complete reimagination of the laptop DJ paradigm as they flow like a seasoned jazz trio – each taking the lead at intuitive moments – layering chords, vocal snippets and drum patterns into an overwhelming digital wall of sound.

Get The Smoke Outta HERE!!!!! This Friday marks the last day that people of Michigan will be allowed to smoke in a public facility (unless it's a smoke shop). So there are a bunch of local celbrations to give Johnny Tobacco the big-sendoff into the great outdoors.

SOYSV are back fresh from the Austin Psych Fest (which was curated by The Black Angels). Their star keeps rising greater and greater, tearing them away from our local scene and converting them to a national band. Also playing are my good friends and one of the best midwest surf bands, Tokyo Sexwhale. They play a gripping array of covers mixed with originals. A solely instrumental outfit with the exception of occasional crowd banter. The quintet is comprised of very very talented musicians where songs culminate based more off of feeling one another out and improvisation rather than playing a song verbatim. This will be the show I will be at. This is the show you should be at.

This is my contingency plan if Ypsilanti should get enveloped by the earth before I get there. What's really cool about this is the diversity. I am very familiar with The Beggars, Electric Fire Babies, and Sey Lui. All the rest are under my radar. Totaling 9 band, you are sure to find something you like. The Belmont is a bit closer than Ypsi, but I try to boycott The Belmont as much as possible. Why? you ask. For their refusal to pay bands agreed upon amounts after shows....really giving them nothing except for a bar tab. Perhaps that's why there are hardly any shows at The Belmont anymore. But, personal grievances aside, this show has all the makings to be a blast.

If you would like something revued by the legendary -jr, feel free to mail hard-copies to 11859 Sycamore, Plymouth, Mi. 48170....and I am partial to vinyl.

Hailing from working-class Birmingham, England, Dave and The English Beat entered the music scene in the 1979. When The English Beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came they came, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance Beat.
The six member band consisted of singer/songwriter Dave Wakeling (vocals & guitar), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), Saxa (saxophone) and Ranking Roger (toasting). The band managed to fuse all of their respective musical influences - soul, reggae, pop and punk - into a unique sound that was highly danceable. Along with contemporaries such as The Specials, The Selecter and Madness, The English Beat became one of the most popular and influential bands of the British Ska movement.
