They wandered their 40 years, collectively at least, through bands and projects that dried up to desert. Milk and honey, stale beer and cigarettes, it didn't matter - they found their Jerusalem when they found each other.

The band met through critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jeff Klein, who played with each of them in his travels as a solo artist. Jeff met guitarist Dave Rosser, a touring member of the Twilight Singers, through producer Mike Napolitano. Bassist Ashley Dzerigian was in Great Northern and toured with Ed Harcourt. Drummer Cully Symington was in Bishop Allen and tracked the Gutter Twins album. Rick Nelson, who plays violin, viola, cello and keyboards in the band, is a longtime member of the Polyphonic Spree and St. Vincent.

"I didn't actually start out thinking of forming a band," Jeff says. "I'd played with all of them at different times, and I was like, 'How great would it be to play with all of these people at the same time?' And then when we did, it made perfect sense for that to be what we do. We clicked immediately."

"Once all of us got in the same room at the same time, I knew at that moment it had become very special to all of us," Rick concurs. "In many bands I have worked with, some musicians just don't listen to each other. They only pay attention to themselves. In Jerusalem, we all interact. The end result is evident."

While most bands say that sort of thing in the first blush of musician love, what makes Jerusalem special is the varied experience and perspectives they bring to the songs, both those Jeff has when he walked in the door, and those they've since written together.
All are multi-instrumentalists with a history of onstage and self-recording ingenuity.

"All of us at one time have kind of done the one-man-band kind of thing, so if you put five one-man-band people together, it's like 25 people, like the Polyphonic Spree," Jeff chuckles. An example of how songs are turned over again and again, like a stone in a teenage science project rock tumbler, is live-show favorite "Remember Everything."

"The way I demoed it," Jeff explains, "It was basically me and computer. When I brought it to everybody, it started out more like a Peter Gabriel song. We replaced all the drums and added horns, trumpets, and strings. And now it sounds like a Neutral Milk Hotel song or something. It has a lot of instruments in it. For everybody, it was a lot of fun to get your hands dirty with real instruments and as a result, the song is a lot more upbeat."

The driving "Sweet Chariot" is another new song that's been rousing audiences at the band's shows. It begins with a jaunty horn line tugging at Klein's wounded whisper, Cully's fierce drum rolls ratcheting up the intensity until it all explodes into its cathartic chorus: "Victory is ours!"

"The end takes off into our own Jerusalem cacophony blanket of sound," Rick says.

The song was recorded in the band's two-room rehearsal space/recording studio in New Orleans, where songs were worked out in one room than quickly recorded in the next "like a music sweat shop."

"Sweet Chariot was the most fun to record," Jeff says. "We set up drums in the kitchen and used only two microphones. The song feels almost like the band's anthem."

The band is of no fixed genre, approaching each song individually to see what they can bring to it and pull out if it. "That's it for me," says Dave. "It's the ability of the songs to be done in a bunch of styles“ from acoustic to trashrock. We've done versions of several in
different ways and the strength of the melodies and all seem to stand up, which will make for a killer, and unpredictable live show."

An example is "Farewell," which is unlike anything else in the band's repertoire. A surprisingly uplifting song about grief, it elegantly sways along like an Irish pub hymn. You're left less with a sense of loss than "the positive side," Jeff says. "It's about moving on, letting things go."

And "Sleepwalking," which began life as one of Jeff's trademark solo soul-shredding jeremiads, and has such been tweaked in a song that, as he puts it, "sounds like ABBA on crack. And who doesn't like that?"

There's a theme here: positivity, an upbeat outlook. Jeff's solo work was always well received, but for all its intensity and dark beauty, it wasn't what you'd dial up looking to be uplifted.

"A sense of community and camaraderie can go a long way," Jeff explains. "I don't think anybody in this project was the coolest kid in school. All of these people are highly revered musicians who have
been involved with a bunch of other projects“ everyone is somebody from somewhere. This time around, we've all gotten together with people on the same level, to have fun. And that's the key in all this: Just to have fun and play music that is fun for us to play, with songs that are meaningful."

"Each of us are branching out and trying new things" Rick adds. "Everyone's ideas are heard and taken into consideration. That does not always happen in bands."

"It's actually the most exciting time in my life. It actually reminded me why I like doing what I do. I had my finger cut off and reattached, quit smoking and lost a bunch of weight," Jeff laughs, "I've earned myself a band."

Yes, that. Jeff almost lost a finger in an accident at the end of the summer, which could have ended his career. "The top part got severed," he says. "And after eight hours, it was all put back together. I can pretty much use it. It hurts, but I'm playing keyboards again.

"And at the end of the day, this band sounds so good I'm willing to give a finger for it."

She is an Australian singer/songwriter whose last foray to Detroit saw her opening for Ben Folds. She is performing with Justin Nozuka and Lenka.
I spent some quality time down in Hamtramck this weekend for the Metrotimes Blowout. The weather seemed to cooperate for those waking between venues. I went to about 10 venues which I had never been in before which was almost as exciting as seeing the 30 bands (out of 200+) that I saw. I have seen about 70 of the bands which played this weekend including some of my local favorites such as the Great Lakes Myth Society, Audra Kubat and Wildcatting which should need no introduction. This weekend I was looking for acts which I had never seen before, so out of the 30 new bands I saw perform this weekend, these are Wild Bill’s Top 5 acts at the Blowout this year.
1.) Pinkeye w/John Sinclair – playing an experimental jam style accompanied by poet extreme Sinclair just gave a cool 60’s style counter culture vibe that really stood out this weekend.
2.) Il Segreto String Quartet – Wayne State string musicians which rocked out with covers of Sonic Youth and the Cranberries.
3.) Codgers – nothing says drinking on a Thursday night like listening to some Celtic influenced rock.
4.) Sh! The Octopus – part folk rock, part psychedelic rock, this group put on a feel good session this weekend.
5.) Dale Beavers & Bootsey X – Bootsey X kept the beat strong behind Beavers blues influenced style so I almost felt like I was down in the delta.
5 ½) Honorable mention – Circus Boy – they are essentially a Detroit oriented supergroup which put the rock in rock-n-roll this weekend.
Despite waking what seemed like miles, there were still a number of acts like Gorvette and Aran Ruth that I missed but heard really good things about. I had a really good time and kept running into people I knew and sometimes even making new friends. I had never gotten around to going to this event before but I definitely feel that I might go to it again next year. Also, a band which just missed my Top 5 list, the Blueflowers, will be playing at the Magic Stick on Friday so feel free to stop on down and give them a listen.
The DIA has a new exhibit opening this week which takes a look at the work of Norman Rockwell entitled “American Chronicles: The Art Of Norman Rockwell”. It explores Rockwell as an artist and takes a look at his images and their impact and influence on American culture. His work has come to epitomize the American dream with works that show the value of friends and family as well as a keen sense of humor. For example, his piece, the ‘Art Critic’ shows a serious student examining the detail of a necklace on a woman’s painted bosom, but unknown to him the picture in the painting is giving him a wry smile. This works as a funny scene of voyeurism but also on a stronger level of not taking art too seriously. Most of his work has that layer of a simple concept with an overlaying deeper meaning that you don’t really need to recognize to enjoy his work. And don’t forget his more serious pieces like “The problem we all live this” which
captures a young black girl being escorted by Federal Marshalls past a wall with racist words. That is a very powerful piece and worth the price of admission by itself. The exhibit even includes all 323 of his original Saturday Evening Post covers. The show runs from March 8th – May 31st and you can go to www.dia.org for more information. I wouldn’t miss this exhibit. My grade is an A. Also, if you go down this Friday evening, you can take in the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. The group basically takes slides and postcards they find in garage sales, etc and put musical pop songs around them. The family also has one of the best merch tables which include homemade dolls and other items. They put on a fascinating show for someone looking for something different.
For those looking for some cool concerts, you can go out Wednesday 11thto see the Celtic punk band the Tossers @ Pike Room (they have toured extensively with Dropkick Murphy’s and Fogging Molly in recent years) or blues singer Shemekia Copeland @ the Ark. Thursday, 12th offers up jam band gurus Umphrey’s McGee @ Royal Oak Music Theatre or Swedish violinist Theresa Andersson @ The Pike Room (check out her YouTube video for “Na Na Na”). Friday the 13th gives us cellist Yo-Yo Ma @ Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor (also playing Sat), the Robert Cray Band @ Motor City Casino, Brooks & Dunn @ Caesar’s Windsor and the hip hop/rap rock outfit Kottonmouth Kings @ Clutch Cargos. Saturday 14th features the Plain White T’s @ St Andrew’s Hall and country star Eric Church @ Clutch Cargos. Lastly, Sunday 15th can have you seeing Raphael Saadiq (of Tony! Toni! Toné! fame) @ the City Theatre or ex-Wall of Voodoo frontman Stan Ridgway @ the Magic Bag.
Looks to be a really nice and diverse week for music so enjoy it.

With a lyrical penance to Replacements mastermind Paul Westerberg, and a guitar-led scrum that harkens back to the days of the Dolls, this downtown quartet has been packing clubs in New York’s Lower East Side for close to two years now. But you can even ask NYC’s bums, that’s what happens when the music is perfectly sloppy, and dangerously unhinged.

So, as the story goes, on the strength of their self-released, dirty dusty Texas-produced Don’t You Dare EP, and one hell of a live show, the Reckless Sons stopped the Gotham rock scene dead in its tracks, forcing an entire city to take notice of their garage-y nuggets and punch-drunk rock n roll. Next thing you know? London calling, as the Sons embarked on a month-long tour of Britain, which culminated in a main-stage appearance at Brighton’s Beachdown festival. Produced in deep Brooklyn by Ben Rice (The Mooney Suzuki and Change The Station), their latest Everybody Knows EP is scheduled for a May bow. With all that said, Reckless Sons are gearing up for their busiest year yet, which kicks off in style at the old CBGB’s space in Manhattan – what fashionistas likely know as the John Varvatos Store – on March 5th.

Crafting an assault of absurd lyrical undertones, The Bitter Tears started as a country and western band but broadened out into other genres, blending different kinds of pop (country, folk, rock, brass band) while flying by the seat of their pants with whatever direction a song happened to be moving. Scalpone elaborates, “Our major initial influence was Kurt Weill. Weill bastardized many genres, wrote his own orchestral arrangements, and with Bertolt Brecht's lyrics, created a wild combination of darkness, raunchy comedy and acerbic social satire. It’s great ‘cause it’s not some intellectual thing; it comes from the guts. Your liver knows when you've written a good song.”
Taken hold by Alan Scalpone (vocals, guitar, brass, woodwinds), Michael McGinley (vocals, bass, brass, strings), John Leonard (piano) and Greg Norman (vocals, guitar, trombone), The Bitter Tears will release their second album, Jam Tarts in the Jakehouse, through Carrot Top Records on March 3, 2009


In their recent three-and-a-half starred rave, Rolling Stone hailed An Horse's Rearrange Beds as a “killer breakup album,” praising its “fuzzed-out riffs, hummable hooks and snarling beats” for “(recalling) the best of Nineties alt-rock.”
“Their neurotic songs wallop like a small-scale Nirvana,” declared Marie Claire, while Spin commended the “clever and efficient” duo for “(churning) up a poignant fervor.”

An Horse also recently joined forces with Death Cab For Cutie for a series of Australian tour dates after Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard proclaimed “they’d only come to Australia if they could play with An Horse."

Detroit's DUENDE! have just returned from New York where they recorded twelve songs with Matt Verta-Ray of Heavy Trash behind the boards in the"mutated nucleus of the analog cave" that is N.Y.HED for that "way-outsound".
The band will be releasing the sessions on vinyl, CD and download thissummer on Detroit local/collective Loco Gnosis. DUENDE! performed this past saturday March 7th at Paychecks for the 12th Annual Hamtramck BLOWOUT -the Nations largest local music festival and blew the doors of the hinges!
On March 14th they will join Canja Rave from Brazil for an in-store appearance at Rama Lama Records in Toledo,Ohio and play at Grumpy Dave's Pub in Bowling Green,Ohio that same night.
On March 15th Canja Rave begin their Detroit round up by going into Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorders with DUENDE! for the day and follow it up witha performance at PJ's Lager House on monday March 16th with former Compulsive Gambler and current Fat Possum collaborator Dale Beavers before heading off to SXSW.

The Hamtramck Rainout - TONIGHT!

MCB started the blowout yesterday at The Fillmore Detroit for a pretty cool event called Jazz on the Vine. Its a benefit to raise cash for Gilda's Club and of course as a sponser we wanted to stay as long as possible (plus with Kimmie Horne on teh bill how can you leave?)

finally with the presky wives and significant others in tow we left the fillmore by 10pm and had to race over to The Belmont and deliver a new video camera to one of the guys. Seems one of the handhelds took a dump after being tossed around like a football earlier in the day ended up in small pieces - the tape looks fine :)

I then made my over to Madame XD at TCH which was great...see this band!
with no time to change I found it amusing attending the blowout in a suit
ran into Sue Static on the way to I,Crime ~ chatted with the HafLife crew who play tonight at HCT by the way and the dude from 1592 out on the street

just went on like that for the night - it was actually my night off from "working the blowout" and without the camera incident I would not have even attended on Friday at all.....

with 5 MCBers running last night I heard they all hit like 12-19 shows

with the great weather and scheduling shifts it has been easier to move on as we have practiced a 15 minute rule at each venue but I am sure the Hamtramck Rainout tonight will reduce our coverage numbers

We caught the night move and cruised around early for a bit...hamtown is the best
now remember - I was just cruising but we had a bunch of other MCB peeps on the ground ...I showed up at KofC with a few extra MCBers and MT made me pay for an extra shooter badge....so they way it stands now is that I paid $30 last night to shoot photos for the MT....and I thought working the blog for free was the worst it could get! anyway - no sweat on that but the funnest band for me was Beverly Fresh at the belmont....ran into LowFi Bri at the show plus I wanted to mention the boys from Zoos of Berlin - nice fucking guys! Had a video interview with Chapstick and the cool crew hanging out at Atlas till the citizens on patrol broke it up outside
Whiskey was jammed and they girls were giving out free kisses to anyone from MCB
(score!) - after dropping my last $30 to pay MT to work for them I had no cash to drink but managed to get the freebies - thanks to all who kept me in the drink!
well - this is getting bloggy now so eff you and see you tonight

MCB: You have three days here in the Detroit area. Any plans? Anything that you know or love about the Motor City that you can share?

ATTELL: As for plans...I guess that depends on the weather its fucking cold in NYC so I can only Imagine the temperature in D-Town. I do want to ride the monorail that goes down town...Does that make me gay??????
MCB: The Gong Show ran for only 8 episodes...Can you tell us what happened to derail its revival?

ATTELL: Actually we did 6 episodes but it felt like 8...I have not heard anything from Comedy Central but I dont think its coming back...I guess we will have to settle for the show "America's Got Talent"

MCB: What was one of the most memorable moments from your experiences doing Insomniac, running around town for drinks and debauchery?
ATTELL: There were alot of cool times on that show, its all a blur thanks to my friend yaeger...But I guess the Penis Parade in Japan was a real trip...Seeing a whole town walk around with a giant Penis was pretty wild...And erotic.

MCB: You've traveled extensively throughout the country. What was THEE best place to get drunk?
ATTELL: I get this question alot..I always say..Vegas is the best drinking town, cause they have no last call, but any place where you dont have to drink and drive will do..

MCB: Can you recite your favorite line (or one that you can't seem to get out of your head) from the voice overs you did for the video game Outlaw Golf 2?
ATTELL: WOW, GOOD ONE !!! favorite line I guess... "Im the master chief" wait thats HALO...Shit!!! Next question..

MCB: Tell us about your favorite heckler moment?
ATTELL: FAVORITE HECKLER MOMENT.....Is there such a thing. You call it heckling I call it tough love...either way, its all good till they start wiping bottles at yah...

MCB: What is your best memory from working the USO circuit?
ATTELL: Speaking of the USO..I am doing a benefit with RON WHITE in Washington DC...The sunday after DETROIT..Tell your friends...

MCB: Who is your current favorite porn star and why?
ATTELL: MY FAVORITE PORN STAR....thats another great question...thats like asking a fat man what his favorite cookie is...They're all good.

MCB: What's next for you?

Cetan Clawson Revolution Announce National Release of “White Heat”
SXSW Performance and new Recording Plans

When teenagers view punk as the older generation’s music, as something heard on cruise ship commercials, you can bet a revolution is about to take place. Weaned on fourth generation pop punk and the open-chord ethos of emo, the Guitar Hero generation is pushing back, defining its own sound, one that owes far more to the classic rock that dominates the game’s ubiquitous soundtrack. That movement may have just found its leader in 21-year old Cetan Clawson. His power trio, The Cetan Clawson Revolution has already logged hundreds of shows in the Detroit area, carving out a niche between Ted Nugent and Jack White in Detroit’s rich musical history with the reissue White Heat through Universal, an album he made when he was a mere 17-years-old. He has also begun pre-production of his new album, The Feedback Gospel with Mike Daly (Whiskeytown, The Plain White T’s, Ambulance LTD, Pernice Brothers) and will perform on Saturday, March 20th at SXSW in Austin, TX.

Cetan Clawson is what best selling author Malcolm Gladwell calls an “outlier.” Raised by his music instructor father, Cetan (a Lakota name, pronounced ‘Cheta’) began playing as soon as he was big enough to hold a guitar. At the Clawson household, jam sessions were as common as play dates and Cetan logged his 10,000 hours before getting his high school diploma. Amidst all the guitar activity, he also managed to make the honor roll. When offered scholarships from both academics institutions and most notably, the Berklee School of Music, Cetan turned them all down, flat. “I didn’t make full use of it against the advice of certain people,” he says matter- of-factly. Having a sister who had just graduated Berklee, he was too comfortable with the curriculum and felt he didn’t need a degree where he was headed; he knew a real rock n’roll education could only be had via experience on the stage. “I turned it down for personal reasons,” Clawson says. “I could have gotten a free ride, but I am committed to the blues. This was and is my passion, and I was confident I could pursue it with reasonable expectation of success.”

Clawson has rock star in his DNA and it shines through in his playing and his individual style. He is a perfect storm of mind-boggling musical technique, jaw dropping stage presence and a sartorial flair that rivals that of Prince in his prime. Cetan classifies his style in a way similar to the video game that has kidnapped pop culture’s often-fickle attention and places himself within a similar –but not the same- context. “Guitar Hero has combined an older mix of songs with a new way of presenting them,” he theorizes. “They are taking classic rock and putting it in a format that newer kids can understand. That what blues guys do: take old things and make them fresh. They make it new, not better, but in an original way.”

And what better time for the return of the guitar god?
As kids everywhere rediscover actual playing in both the games and on YouTube, and punk stagnates in a morass of mascara and morality, Cetan doesn’t just commit heresy by playing leads; he plays them behind his head, behind his back, left-handed, right-handed, one handed and even with his teeth, boasting a style that can’t be matched by guitarist nor gamer. “I have one small chip from a slight mishap before I practiced it a lot,” he says with a laugh. “It takes a great deal of skill.” Clawson himself admits that while the game exposes “the kids” to the artistry of the guitar, he thinks that hours spent playing the game would be better as hours spent playing the actual instrument. It’s been years since John Mayer emerged as the new guitar ace whose job it was to re-introduce the blues to a younger audience. Cetan Clawson is now poised as heir to that lineage, pushing into new territory with a skill and acumen that represents everything happening in today’s music. The Cetan Clawson Revolution is a return to classic form; the manifestation of a new generation’s desire for a bona fide Rock Star.
