Saline-raised Fiddler Jeremy Kittel was stirring up excitement in Michigan's Celtic music scene even during the days when he had to be dropped off to play gigs. Acoustic music fans nationally have been following his career because this young musician has challenged himself at every turn, branching out into bluegrass, jazz, and, as a graduate of the U-M School of Music, classical music. Now he takes a new step forward with the Jeremy Kittel Band, whose musical roots traverse the globe. With the drive of Celtic fiddling, the spontaneity of jazz, soul of bluegrass, rhythms of Africa and Latin America, layered melodies of Eastern Europe, and the intricacies of chamber music, the new Jeremy Kittel Band has been delivering concerts on the forward edge of progressive acoustic music.

‘WONDERLAND’
In April 2009, a motley band of artists, musicians, costumers, burlesque and sideshow performers, carpenters, and other creative minds worked together to bring Detroit’s unique brand of variety show in the form of WONDERLAND. A modern take on the classic tale by Lewis Carroll, Wonderland brought together music, performance art, literature, and storybook visuals to create a show unlike any other so far.
Starring the First Runner-Up to Miss Exotic World 2009, Roxi D’Lite, and featuring music from Detroit musicians Drew Bardo and Rabeah Lteif [with their respective bands in tow], Wonderland was a burlesque show, a musical, and an over-the-top masquerade.

This New Year’s Eve, your favorite characters return to the stage to revisit WONDERLAND. Join the Caterpillar as he smokes his hookah and the Cheshire Cat as he grins his signature grin while enjoying the Looking Glass Gallery and Wonderland-inspired cuisine by Sarah Lachowski. Toast the New Year at midnight with Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and take in WONDERLAND all over again.

If you’re unable to attend New Years, or perhaps you fear the permanent nonsense it may instill in your being, feel free to join us January 1st and 2nd in WONDERLAND’s original masquerade party format.

Wayne "The Train" Hancock - Machine Shop in Flint - Friday 11/6

WAYNE "THE TRAIN" HANCOCK LIVE!

The Machine Shop on Friday, November 6th

Since his stunning debut, Thunderstorms and Neon Signs in 1995, Wayne "The Train" Hancock has been the undisputed king of Juke Joint Swing--that alchemist's dream of honky-tonk, western swing, blues, Texas rockabilly and big band. Always an anomaly among his country music peers, Wayne's uncompromising interpretation of the music he loves is in fact what defines him: steeped in traditional but never "retro;" bare bones but bone shaking; hardcore but with a swing. Like the comfortable crackle of a Wurlitzer 45 jukebox, Wayne is the embodiment of genuine, house rocking, hillbilly boogie.

Wayne's disdain for the slick swill that passes for real deal country is well known. Like he's fond of saying:

"Man, I'm like a stab wound in the fabric of country music in Nashville.

See that bloodstain slowly spreading?

That's me."

Little known fact:

Wayne is the only Bloodshot artist to have had their CD

taken aboard a space shuttle flight.

Wayne Hancock Live

Friday, November 6th  at The Machine Shop

3539 S. Dort Hwy. – Flint, MI

Show Time: 8pm

Wild At Heart midweek special

Wild At Heart

Wouldn't it be cool if roller derby was actually a college credit class?

Just a random thought before I get into something really bothering me.

Just had a few things going on and some free time so I'd thought I'd spend some time to talk about a few things. First, being a Yankees fan it was nice seeing them win the World Series for their record 27th time though is it just me who thinks that the Series should be over before November? It's just too cold out for baseball. Brrrrrr!

Tomorrow will see the The Cult take the stage at the Fillmore. Forming in 1983, this English rock band is known for it's singles such as singles such as "Love Removal Machine", "Fire Woman" and "She Sells Sanctuary" (the last being off their biggest record 'Love' which they will be performing at the show in it's complete self). For those that don't remember, lead singer Ian Astbury followed in his hero's footsteps by becoming lead singer in an updated version of The Doors, with original members Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, known as The Doors of the 21st Century which I saw at Pine Knob and he really channelled Jim Morrison that night. If you would like to see the Cult tomorrow, be the first person to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com and I'll hook you up with a pair of tickets for the show.

Also, on Monday 9th, AFI will be performing at the Fillmore. Best known for the songs "Miss Murder" and "Love Like Winter", this American rock band from Ukiah, California would like you to see them live and the first person to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com gets that privelidge. They are performing with the English punk rock band Gallows.

For Pistons fans, the Take One Community Program, in alliance with The Pistons-Palace Foundation, is calling all fans to “Pack The Palace For Charity” on Thursday, December 10th at 7:30PM at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Take One Community Program is a not-for-profit organization which was founded in 1999 as a summer youth program. One year later, the program had expanded into a year-round program offering after school leadership and recreational enrichment activities to youth. For more information about Take One, visit www.takeonecommunityprogram.org. As the charity of choice for the Detroit Pistons vs. Denver Nuggets game, fans can get discounted tickets by going to www.nba.com/pistons/packthepalace/ or calling 248.377.0105. Upper level tickets are discounted to $20 (regularly $40) and lower level tickets are discounted to $40 (regularly $65). The Pistons will donate $10 to the Take One Community Program for each ticket purchased by Wednesday, November 25 so if you want to get to a game and same some money while helping a good cause, get your tickets now.

Movie buffs can rejoice with a new sweepstakes promotion going on at Emagine theatres. Beginning Friday November 6, 2009 and ending January 3, 2010, every time you attend any Emagine Theatre, you will be eligible to enter into a sweepstakes to win $10,000 of which The Grand Prize winner will receive a check for $5,000 to use as they wish and another $5,000 check will be designated to a 501(c)3 charity of the winners choosing. There are also prizes of season passes, family fun packs and free popcorn. For more information, patrons can inquire at any theatre location or see their website at emagine-entertainment.com.

The monster trucks return to the Palace on Saturday morning so make sure to tune into WXOU 88.3FM (online at www.wxou.org) to hear an interview with "Brute Force" truck driver Jerry Perry and the chance to win a pair of tickets.

AMC Livonia 20 and AMC Star Great Lakes 25 will both turn their lobbies into a Christmas Celebration in honor of the opening of Disney’s "A Christmas Carol", which opens in their IMAX® theatres on Friday, November 6. This Christmas Celebration event takes place from 6:30PM-8:00PM and is free and open to the public. Please note that all activities are free, but do not include free admission to a movie. Visitors at each theatre can help ring in the holiday cheer with Christmas caroling, family fun activities and much more! AMC Livonia will have carols performed by the Livonia Civic Choir and will have a special appearance by Santa and his elves. Great lakes Crossing will have singer Cliff Erickson performing. I still think November is too early for Christmas but don't let me be a Scrouge for anyone who wants to enjoy it a bit early.

I'll have more for you on Monday so don't you fret. Have a good weekend and stay warm!

Downunder Detroit by Tall Kiwi Chick (TKC) - 11/5/09

TALL KIWI CHICK was a winner in one of our contests for free tickets and of course we chatted it up a bit and met up with her and her crew at the show. After knocking back a few cold ones we were fast friends and thick as thieves.
Anyway - we thought it would nice to get some insight about good ol dietroit from someone with a bit different perspective so we created

"Downunder Detroit"

is the new column written by our TKC
who is visiting Detroit for a while
from her homeland of New Zealand.

She loves music, men & drinking

Halloween in Detroit 2009
So I was really really excited about having a proper american halloween.
Started drinking at home, and gave out candy to tonnes of dressed up kiddies! I enjoyed the kids who were a little more original, like Steve Urkel!! They got extra candy!!
Then it was my turn to dress up and go out, I went as a New Zealand Rugby Player, now for those who don't know, Rugby is like football, just no padding.... Big everywhere else in the world, except here.. I didn't really expect people to recognise what we were dressed up as, i just wanted to represent NZ! But surprisingly there were a few people who knew straight away! I stayed away from the big halloween parties and hit some pubs close to home. Dissapointed that there were lots of people who weren't dressed up at all, but happy with the originality of most peoples costumes that did dress up.
Those who know me, can vouch i am a big fan of the high-five, so i rewarded the people who dressed up at the pub with a high-five, and lectured those who didn't...
Sorry!
Great night though and i can't wait to have another occasion to dress up!!

We met with BBE prior to chatting with HMS - see below
Har Mar Superstar
After a few more drinks
, we also got the pleasure of having a chat with the headlining act, Har Mar Superstar. After seeing some of his music we were excited to meet him and see what he's like in person, he was awesome! Plus he got extra points because he could understand our accent with no problems! Hailing originally from Minneappolis, but now calling Hollywood, CA home, Har Mar is no stranger to Detroit, and has toured here numerous times before.
He said he loved Detroit and all the house parties
with friends that happen after the shows here.
How would you describe your music to people who haven't heard it?
Brutal Sexual R&B

How was it working with Celebs Eva Mendez, Alia Shawkat and Eric Wareheim in your latest video 'Tall Boy'?
Really easy & relaxed, they are all friends of mine.

Favorite Detroit Memory?
When he ended up randomly welding a statue at 5am in the morning wasted with friends.
Don't worry kids, no one was hurt.
Who's idea was it to have Bang! Bang! Eche! come on tour and support you?
I had heard them through my booking agent, and really liked them.
Har Mar Superstar put on a great show. I loved watching him slowly take layers of clothing off,
i like it when men take their clothes off,
the anticipation and the beer, got me excited!!
It ended with Har Mar wearing only his underwear.
Success. Great times!
Har Mar's latest album 'Dark Touches' is in stores now.

Bang! Bang! Eche!

We hooked up with Bang! Bang! Eche! @ The Magic Stick on Monday night.

Hailing from our hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand!!
The four members Zach, Charlie, T'nealle & James are from OUR hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand!! So you know we were overly excited to meet them! This was their first time in Detroit, and they admitted it was the 'scariest city they've ever been too!!' (and they've been on tour around the world a few times now)... admittedly there was an incident with a homeless person that brought them to this point...

This young Dance-Punk band were genuine and down to earth, and put on a great show!! The energy and talent was wicked! Bang! Bang! Eche! were really awesome live and i definitely encourage people to go and see them if they have the chance!

So which New Zealand Bands would you recommend
Detroit Rock City to listen to, besides you guys?!

'The Mint Chicks', 'Die! Die! Die!', 'Thought Creature', 'Street Chant' & 'Bandicoot'

What the biggest difference about being in US?

Everyone here really treats us like shitty kids, since we're all under 21 and playing in bars here. (In NZ and most other places we tour, the drinking age is 18)

Sweet chilli thai sauce from subway

What's the most memorable gig you've ever played?

Our last show of the tour in Germany last year, all our equipment started to break and we ended up improvising 2 new songs that we've never played before. Like actual songs with versus, choruses and bridges etc that were good!! Wish we could remember what they were...

Who would most likely get into a fight?

James.
He just got into a fight on Halloween night in Montreal, CA,
but he blames the 10.1% alcohol beer he was drinking that night.

How did you come up with your band name?

Zach says Bang Bang Eche is the name of the only known
Hare Krishna Porn Film in existence... Check it out if you can find it..

INTERVIEW - Rebirth of DEATH - And what happens when you tell the suits to take a hike! Words by Ronit

In their first show in over thirty years, Death - the black punk rock band from the 70’s -kicked off the first performance of their Midwest tour in their hometown of Detroit this past September.

Flash forward to this coming weekend at The Fun Fun Fest in Austin where DEATH will be playing live and MCB has a video interview lined up tomorrow.

In 1975, Columbia records expressed interest in signing the band – with original members brothers David, Dannis and Bobby Hackney – with the condition that they change the name. David told them “hell no,” and instead put out “For the Whole World to see,” a self-released album of seven songs on 500 copies. But without the industry’s backing and the emergence of Disco - outside of rock record collectors (one single recently traded for $800) - Death was all but forgotten.

Three decades later, Bobby’s oldest son Bobby Jr. of the band Rough Francis, found Death’s underground cortege on the west coast, and told Bobby Sr. about it. Songs like “Freakin Out” and “Keep on Knocking” reached cult status for rockers n rollers. Fans of of Bad Brains, The Stooges and the MC5 loved Death.

Before David passed away from lung cancer in 2000, he had a premonition that the band would become famous one day. He believed what they did was revolutionary. The night before he died he handed Bobby some master tapes from the archive, ‘Bob, you’ve got to keep all this stuff,” he said. “The world’s going to come looking for it one day, and when the world comes looking for it, I’ll know that you’ll have it.”

Bobby and Dannis made good on their oldest brother’s word, this time with guitarist Bobby Duncan. They picked up where they started, in Detroit. Today's a day to witness the rebirth of Death.

Interview with Bobby Hackney of DEATH
by Ronit Pinto

MCB: How was it to be back on the road and to play in Detroit after all these years?

Bobby Hackney: It was awesome, really amazing. We felt we could have stayed on stage forever.

MCB: How did that performance compare to shows you’ve played in the past?

BH: Detroit was first real showcase for Death except for garage shows in the 70’s, which were pretty wild. It was just a real good vibe.

MCB: How was it to tour with your sons?
(Bobby Jr., Julian and Urian of Rough Francis)

BH: Definitely amazing.

MCB: Explain how your kids discovered Death's underground audience and brought it to your attention.

BH: They were out west in San Francisco. Bobby (Jr.) was the catalyst in bringing it to the forefront. It was sort of a ‘dad, why didn’t you tell me’ type of moment. We never really played too much of our music for them, maybe they heard it once or twice on a 45 but we never went through the whole ABC’s of Death.

MCB: What was it was like being a black punk rock band in Detroit in the 70’s?

BH: Well, we were in the middle of the black community in the early 70’s. The music at the time was Earth Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, of course Motown and various other things in the black community. The music my brothers and I played was the kind you only heard across the water in Windsor, Ann Arbor or the suburbs. The more we went in and out of the studio (United Sound in Detroit) to record, our sound became better and more refined. Though we were loud, we started to sound really good in the neighborhood and some people started playing rock records. We like to think we educated some people in the neighborhood.

MCB: Columbia records expressed interest in signing you in 1975 with the condition you change the name ‘Death’ and you and your brothers said no. You said that David told them ‘hell no.’ What were your intentions when you named it?

BH: Back in the 70’s everybody understood ‘death’ differently. David’s concept was that death is a door that no matter where you are or who you are, we all have this door that’s looming and have to deal with one day. He believed that the door wasn’t as bleak as people thought it was, that it led to a different, deeper place. He was a deeply spiritual person.

MCB: Strange that all three brothers were musically gifted.
What’s your musical background?

BH: My mom and dad were very influential. My dad was a Baptist minister who loved the blues. He would play all the Chess records, Muddy, Etta, Chuck Berry. My mom loved music too and sung a little in the choir. She liked to line us up like a little singing group. As other brothers got older, older brother Earl started buying Motown early 60’s and bringing 45’s in the house. And my mom listened to CKLW, so we’d be at the breakfast table listening to Big Bad John, Jimmy Dean and James Brown. We were exposed to a melting pot of music. The late 60’s 70’s had so much rich music all around.

Me and my two brothers had a few lessons, but were mostly self-taught. We lived around some old blues guys and mentors. David used to go see one old blues guy.

MCB: What was David's role in the family and in the band?

BH: Well, David sort of ‘yanked’ the guitarist position from me. My mom bought me my first guitar for Christmas in 1959. It was a green and black B.B. King replica, a really nice guitar. Because of sibling rivalry or whatever, he actually took over my guitar and sold it to a pawnshop. After we fought about that, I bought a bass and then David started playing the guitar. I guess you could say I conceded the guitar part to him.

When he was young he would sit and play for hours and hours. There were a lot of times he would be playing when I left for school at 8 am and when I came back he would still be playing. No amp, just him.

Listening to the archives was really emotional. David would take a song and play it for like 30, 35 minutes. He was really devoted as a guitar player and as a songwriter. He said he always heard music in his head and it kind of tormented him. He was sort of a genius who had all these different things going on in his head with music. He was writing operas about spinning death from negative from positive.

David is the status of a prophet to us. He predicted that what is happening now would come to pass. He knew this music would be heard by the world. And he has reaffirmed my belief that there’s way, way more than what we experience here on earth.

MCB: Talk about your past bands, Rock Fire Funk Express and Lambsbread.

BH: Rock Fire Funk Express was our first band before Death and Lambsbread was the last band we had before Death returned. After Death, Dave got homesick and went back to Detroit, leaving me and Dannis with bass and drums, with a vocal. We happened upon reggae through local music scene in Vermont where drum and bass are deeply respected and appreciated; and we began to explore Reggae. Lambsbread became one of most known reggae bands throughout New England.

Rock Fire Funk Express was rock and funk, a cross between War and Sly & the Family Stone. It was me, Dannis, David and our cousin Anthony. Anthony was from Cleveland and could only come up for summers. That got a little old so we ended up being a three piece. We went to a lot of live shows, began exploring rock and roll and then became Death.

MCB: You’re clear in your message that music transcends race.
Explain.

BH: When Death started in 1973, we weren’t like “we’re gonna’ create a black rock band.” To us rock and roll is a universal message. The system was the enemy, not race. Vietnam and things that kept us from being a part from one people. That’s what Monterey, Woodstock and Newport were all about, bringing people together and creating awareness of the universal. It’s what rock n roll was founded on.

**Look out for demo tapes and recordings from the archive, including some releases from the days of Rock Fire Funk Express.

“You’ll be hearing a little more
from Death in the future-”
Bobby said.

motorcityblog@earthlink.net

Check out the show tonight which features many Detroit stops

What is Travel Channel's Man v. Food?

Host Adam Richman sets out to travel the country in search of the best places to do some serious indulging. Adam's quest brings him to some of the greatest traditional food the nation can serve up, and he takes on some epic food challenges along the way. Watch the series to find out who wins when Man takes on Food.

Detroit Episode DetailsAdam starts his trip to Detroit with a chili dog civil war, which started almost a century ago. Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island sit side-by-side on Lafayette street and both come from the same family lineage! (Brothers in a family rift to be exact). Detroit residents are fiercely loyal to one or the other. Which one does Adam think tastes best? You'll have to watch to find out. Next, Adam visits Slows Bar BQ on Michigan Avenue for what some say is the best barbecue in town. Their menu includes an interesting twist on classics, like brisket enchiladas and a vegatarian 'chicken' sandwich.

Adam is there to try their signature dish:

the triple thread pork sandwich.

This dish starts with a bed of bacon, then a healthy serving of hickory-smoked pork butt, and finally finished off with some grilled ham. Now for the BIG stuff...Adam's main challenge for this episode. He heads to Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar to take on the "Absolutely Ridiculous Burger". What makes it absolutely ridiculous?

It weighs 190 pounds!!!

Mallie's holds the record for the world's largest burger, but nobody has ever attempted to eat it. Adam has gathered a 40-person team of Detroit's finest to help him tackle this massive challenge. Check out the video preview for a sneak peek at this burger!

Be sure to tune-in Wednesday, November 4th, at 10 E/P.

"The Fire Collapses into Smoldering Embers, Let The Winter Come. Theatre Bizarre Sleeps..." - Theatre Bizarre. Words by Ronit Pinto

Before you send your children out to play next October,

beware of your neighbors.
The Cimmerian group that brings you Theatre Bizarre has spread their rapacious feelers over three additional lots beside the Michigan State Fairgrounds bringing them closer and closer to you. Fulfilling you its annual promise, “a thrill to the obscene from dusk till dawn.”

Theatre Bizarre began nearly 10 years ago as a combination of Halloween parties Ken Poirier, Matt Pomroy and artist John Dunivant were involved in. Originally called the “Carnival of Carnage,” the masquerade party for friends was spread over five city lots, owned by Poirier; and the three began building Dunivant’s vision of a “dilapidated early 20th century carnival midway,” Pomroy described .

They built a stage with a stage with a sign that read

THEATRE BIZARRE that blew over by the end of winter.

In 2001 they decided to build a much larger, permanent stage and open it to the public and sold tickets at Dally in the Alley, which they still do today. This time the event would be known as Theatre Bizarre.

The event grows every year, with a core group of dedicated helpers who build the grounds from bottom to top. “The actual night of the party is magic,” said Pomroy. “But what I love most about Theatre Bizarre is the time spent putting it together.” This year, the freestanding art installation spanned 10 city lots all art directed by John.

A man of many skills, Dunivant paints, sculpts, designs and does film - he won a Rob Zombie short horror movie contest with his “The Things That Ate Detroit.” Every year he directs the entire project inspired from his dark and wild imagination. “Taking you in the mind of the killer,” according to him. You have to see it to believe.

“Each year John pushes the design to new heights and we all make it a reality,” said Pomroy, who promotes the event and books many of the shows. “It amazes me sometimes what we all go through and sacrifice to make it happen and although each year pulling something this size off becomes more daunting none of us would be elsewhere.”

Some highlights this year included super sensual burlesque artist Roxi Dlite; Mucca Pazza, a 30-piece “circus punk marching band” that was really awesome! Cult of the Psychic Fetus, The Back CCs (NYC) and Crud.
And the ‘Thrillerific Roaster Coaster,’ available to the public for the first time.

“I don’t think something on this scale could happen anywhere but Detroit,” said Casey Miller, a stage manager and coordinator for Theatre Bizarre. “It’s so big, loud, bright and well done. Nobody leaves disappointed.”

“It’s an event for our friends and family. A crazy wonderland,” Dunivant said.

Don’t miss the upcoming production of ‘Wonderland,’ the ‘neo-vaudeville’ remake of the Lewis Carroll's classic this winter. They’ll be taking over Hasting's Street Ballroom for three nights, beginning New Years Eve.

When the Gories reunited last year Chris Handyside of the MetroTimesnoted the early contact between Dan Kroha and Jon Spencer: "At one of their infrequent out-of-town shows, they supported Memphisruffians the Gibson Brothers, a like-minded crew mining similar sourcematerial with similarly primitive - if more country-tinged - results.
The Gibsons had just added a young Jon Spencer, recently departed from cultlegends Pussy Galore, to their ranks. Spencer - who was blown away by theGories - had some swing with indie labels. He hooked them up withSeattle's Sub Pop. The result was the Gories' sole Sub Pop single, acheeky cover of Spinal Tap's "Gimme Some Money."
Spencer recounted that initial jolt in HEAVY TRASH's THEY WERE KINGS on 2007's GOING WAY WITH HEAVY TRASH: "the Gories were first/out of sight..Mickey and Peg/Danny were cool..Thunderbird baby ESQ.. long before the Fortune building was torndown/they inspired a scene/give 'em the crown..
They Were Kings.." Spencer's post Blues Explosion band HEAVY TRASH
with Matt Verta-Ray hasreset the scales on which Americana is weighed yet again.
Both still wield charismatically the deconstructionist sense of their previous workbut delivered in a soulful blast that reassembles all the angels anddevils of roots music into timeless sonic mythos not much different thanWilliam Burrough's Inter-zone only hipper baby.
Local Psyche-Goth-Rock band DUENDE!
will offer direct support.
DUENDE!recorded their recent album REMNANT OF A REMNANT at Vert-Ray's N.Y.HED studios this past winter. The collective LOCO GNOSIS will pace the nightwith the side-show style interludes by SATORI CIRCUS and Chantal Dixondancing with sword and snake.

They were miners, fathers, soldiers, farmers and children. They are revered by their descendents and have been visited by millions. They are rare, shocking…and completely accidental. Now, for the first time ever, they are coming to the United States in an all-new touring exhibition, The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato.

The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato is a 10,000 square-foot exhibition that will debut at the Detroit Science Center in October 2009 before touring six other U.S. destinations from 2010-2012.

Featuring 36 accidental mummies on loan from the Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato, the exhibition combines science, history and cultural anthropology to immerse the visitor in the world of a Mexican city over 100 years ago where deceased residents naturally mummified in their crypts. This will be the very first time these mummies have been seen outside of Mexico
“Death has been part of the culture of Mexico, and in particular of Guanajuato for centuries. Our Mummy Museum represents our way of acknowledging the every day citizens that once walked our streets, whose bodies have transcended generations because of a natural process,” said Dr. Eduardo Romero Hicks, Mayor of the city of Guanajuato, Mexico. “This presentation for the first time in the U.S. provides the opportunity for these mummies to tell their story, to show the way they lived, and in some instances the way they died. In this global world that we live in, we want to make sure that their story is heard beyond our borders.”

“These mummies have attracted millions of visitors to Guanajuato and it is an honor to bring them to the United States,” said Kevin Prihod, President & CEO of the Detroit Science Center. “This exhibition will present a unique look into Mexican culture, forensic science and the very lives of these amazing mummies. It is an experience not to be missed.”
Only 1 in 100 bodies buried in Guanajuato experiences this rare and mysterious process of natural mummification. Unlike bodies that were “artificially” mummified through an embalming and wrapping process, accidental mummies form only in certain climates and conditions.
Local legend held that the bodies in Guanajuato became mummified because the area’s water is rich in minerals and sulfur. However researchers believe that the hot weather warmed the crypts and dried out the bodies. The Guanajuato collection is believed to be the largest group of mummies anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.

Visitors to the exhibition will meet some of these accidental mummies, learn about life in their thriving community, discover the modern-day forensic technology that helps scientists analyze them, and explore a culture that reveres and celebrates them. Each mummy will tell his or her own story, with facial reconstructions completed by a forensic artist to give insight into their lives.
“Through full-body CT scans at Oakwood Imaging Center (Dearborn, Mich.), along with recent x-rays and endoscopic examinations conducted by mummy experts Jerry Conlogue and Ronald Beckett of Quinnipiac University, we are making new and exciting discoveries about the mummies featured in the exhibition. We look forward to sharing our findings with our visitors,” said Vivian Henoch, Medical Science Content Developer for the exhibition.
The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato is a highly educational exhibition, meeting multiple objectives found in the National Science Education Standards for grades 5-12. A complete educational guide including classroom activities, historical fun facts, a glossary and more will be available to school groups visiting the exhibition.

The Ruiners - Heidelberg / Club Above Ann Arbor - Saturday, November 14th

Detroit's musical reprobates,
THE RUINERS
will be crashing Ann Arbor’s CLUB ABOVE at HEIDELBERG,
Saturday, November 14th 2009
Doors at 8PM

Rounding out the bill are, THE HEATHENS, KEN'S LOUD BAND, LAWNCARE and from Chicago, RAMONES tribute band, GABBA GABBA HEY.

Always loud, theatrical and riff heavy, The Ruiners will showcasing new songs for their soon to be released CD,Featuring the double frontal attack of Rick Ruiner and Russian émigré, the punk priestess, Nina Friday, The Ruiners have been wreaking Rock & Roll havoc for a decade, and show no signs of slowing down-or starting themselves on fire.

Punk stalwarts The Heathens (also from Chicago) will headline and this show will also see the re emergence of Ken's Loud Band featuring avant Pop songwriting genius, Ken Stanley and drummer extraordinaire, Doug Gourlay- both longtime Frank Pahl collaborators from the legendary art band, Only A Mother and also solo work.

Stanley, the cousin of Blue Grass legends The Stanley Brothers, writes majestic, baroque and quirky Rock songs which run the gamut from the Bee Gee-esque, "The 1911 Boston Molasses Disaster" to "Stigmata" which illustrates the social difficulty of involuntarily bleeding from the hands and feet. Stanley (and his band of 12 years) rarely play live -the last time at the 2007 Detroit Fringe Festival as Minnie Krueger Buys The Farm, but with a recorded output of over 400 songs, The KLB will no doubt find something appropriate for this Punk heavy show.
